Abstract:Understanding the spatiotemporal characteristics of the interactions among ecosystem services (ESs) is a crucial but challenging task for maintaining human well-being and achieving sustainable regional development. However, understanding the spatiotemporal interactions of multiple ESs at different grid scales and within different ecosystem services bundles (ESBs) is relatively limited, particularly in coal mining areas with a high groundwater table (CMA-HGT) where the land use has drastically changed as a result of mining subsidence. This study examines CMA-HGT in Huainan, aiming to identify ESBs and explore the spatiotemporal characteristics of trade-offs/synergies among ESs at distinct grid scales and ESBs. Five ESs relating to provisioning, regulation, and maintenance, including food production (FP), water yield (WY), soil conservation (SC), carbon sequestration (CS), and biodiversity maintenance (BM) were quantified using different biological models during the period 1987-2018. Spatiotemporal trade-offs/synergies among ESs were explored using correlation analysis and significance tests at different scales. The spatiotemporal distributions and main characteristics of distinct ESBs were identified using a self-organizing map (SOM) and Calinski criterion. The interactions among ESs in different ESBs were detected. Relationships between ESs and land use or coal production (CP) were explored using redundancy analysis (RDA). The results demonstrate that spatiotemporal trade-offs were generally observed among provisioning services at distinct grid scales and within different ESBs. Meanwhile, spatiotemporal synergies generally appeared between regulation and maintenance services at distinct grid scales. Interactions among ESs presented temporal dynamic, spatial heterogeneity and scales dependence due to the relationships of FP-BM or SC-CS had changed with the increasing of research scales. Three FSBs-ESB1, ESB2, and ESB3-were identified at a grid of scale of 1000 m, and their spatial locations varied across different periods, but the areas of variation covered less than 24% of the study area. BM was synergistic with FP, WY, SC, and CS; while WY had only a trade-off relationship with FP in ESB1. WY had trade-off relationships with FP, SC, CS, and BM in ESI32. In ESB3, BM was synergistic with FP, SC, and CS; while it was in a trade-off relationship with WY. Cultivated land, construction land and CP were the main driving factors in the WSA, ESB1, ESB2 and ESB3. There was a certain degree of change in the relationships between ESs and land use/CP, and the relationships among ESs at different grid scales and ESBs over time and space, which indicates strong regional heterogeneity and scale dependence. These results can provide detailed guidelines for formulating spatially targeted ecosystem management, restoration programs and ES payment policies. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Spatially Heterogeneous Relationships between Ecosystem Service Trade-Offs and Their Driving Factors: A Case Study in Baiyangdian Basin, China

Abstract:Clarifying the complex relationships among ecosystem services (ESs) and their driving mechanisms is essential for effective ecosystem management and enhancing human welfare. Nonetheless, the current research on these issues still remains limited; therefore, further theoretical exploration is required. This study aims to quantitatively illustrate the trade-off strength of ESs and investigate the spatiotemporal heterogeneity connections between these relationships and various anthropogenic and natural factors in Baiyangdian basin, China, integrating InVEST, RMSE, geographical detector and MGWR methods. From 2000 to 2020, the total water yield (WY) and nutrient export (NE) increased, while the total carbon storage (CS) and habitat quality (HQ) decreased slightly. The trade-offs of ESs showed spatiotemporal heterogeneity. The most serious trade-off occurred between regulating services (CS and NE) and supporting services (HQ) in 2000, which was mainly distributed in the densely forested and grassed western and northern regions of the basin. The trade-off intensities of half of the pairwise ESs in 2020 increased, with the strengthened areas mainly located in the southeast of the watershed where built-up lands are concentrated. Various factors dominated the trade-offs among ESs, with the interactive effects of multiple drivers being more significant than those of individual factors. Land use type, vegetation cover and precipitation have the most pronounced effect on the trade-offs among ESs. The findings of this study may suggest and advocate for spatial ecological strategies to enhance the integrated and holistic advancement of various ESs and also serve as a reference for regional ecosystem governance and the attainment of sustainable growth.

Abstract:Research on the spatiotemporal evolution and trade-offs of ecosystem services (ESs) is important for optimizing the ecological security barrier system and promoting coordinated socio-economic development. Natural factors, e.g., climate change, and human factors, e.g., unreasonable land use, have impacted and damaged ecosystem structure and function, leading to challenges with ES trade-offs and the spatial identification of priority protected areas. Here, the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of five ESs (water yield, nitrogen export, soil retention, carbon storage, and habitat quality) in Anhui Province, China, from 2000-2020 were analyzed based on the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs (InVEST) model. The trade-offs and spatial patterns among different ESs were explored using Pearson correlation and hotspot analyses; the dynamics of natural growth, cultivated land protection, and ecological protection scenarios for ESs in 2030 were simulated and analyzed by coupling InVEST with the patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model. The results reveal the following. (1) From 2000-2020, increases in water yield and soil retention occurred, with concurrent declines in the other services; the total nitrogen high-value area was mainly concentrated in the plain, with the other services' high-value areas mainly concentrated in the Dabieshan and Southern Anhui Mountains, with each ES showing similar spatial distributions across years. (2) The ESs were mainly synergistic, with trade-offs mainly between nitrogen export and other services. (3) Hotspot overlap between water yield and the other ESs was relatively low; no more than 6.53% of ecosystems per unit area provided five ESs simultaneously. (4) Other than water yield, the ecological protection scenario was more conducive to improving ecosystem functions. This study's results indicate inadequate synergy among ESs in Anhui Province; competition among land types must be further balanced in the future. This study provides a basic reference for implementing ecological projects and constructing ecological security patterns.

Impact of Paddy Field Expansion on Ecosystem Services and Associated Trade-Offs and Synergies in Sanjiang Plain

Abstract:In recent decades, the integrity and security of the ecosystem in the Sanjiang Plain have faced severe challenges due to land reclamation. Understanding the impact of paddy field expansion on regional ecosystem services (ESs), as well as revealing the trade-offs and synergies (TOS) between these services to achieve optimal resource allocation, has become an urgent issue to address. This study employs the InVEST model to map the spatial and temporal dynamics of five key ESs, while the Optimal Parameter Geodetector (OPGD) identifies primary drivers of these changes. Correlation analysis and Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) reveal intricate TOS among ESs at multiple scales. Additionally, the Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) elucidates the direct impacts of paddy field expansion on ESs. The main findings include the following: (1) The paddy field area in the Sanjiang Plain increased from 5775 km2 to 18,773.41 km2 from 1990 to 2020, an increase of 12,998.41 km2 in 40 years. And the area of other land use types has generally decreased. (2) Overall, ESs showed a recovery trend, with carbon storage (CS) and habitat quality (HQ) initially decreasing but later improving, and consistent increases were observed in soil conservation, water yield (WY), and food production (FP). Paddy fields, drylands, forests, and wetlands were the main ES providers, with soil type, topography, and NDVI emerging as the main influencing factors. (3) Distinct correlations among ESs, where CS shows synergies with HQ and SC, while trade-offs are noted between CS and both WY and FP. These TOS demonstrate significant spatial heterogeneity and scale effects across subregions. (4) Paddy field expansion enhances regional SC, WY, and FP, but negatively affects CS and HQ. These insights offer a scientific basis for harmonizing agricultural development with ecological conservation, enriching our understanding of ES interrelationships, and guiding sustainable ecosystem management and policymaking.
Experience with post-market surveillance of in-vitro diagnostic medical devices for lay use in Germany

Abstract:Abstract Background: The European Directive 98/79/EC on in-vitro diagnostic medical devices (IVDs) regulates IVD marketing practices and post-market surveillance. IVD manufacturers have to inform the responsible Competent Authorities of any issues. In Germany, the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) is responsible for most IVDs, with a small subset of IVDs being within the responsibility of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institute (PEI). Methods: All IVD notifications received by BfArM between 1999 and June 2006 were analysed in terms of the source of notification, underlying product defects and corrective actions. Results: A total of 773 notifications were received, 566 related to IVDs for professional use and 207 related to over-the-counter (OTC) products for lay use. The latter included systems for blood glucose testing (analysers, tests and control materials; n=166) or coagulation testing (n=13) and pregnancy tests (n=25). Most reports came from manufacturers (n=115; 55.6%) and users (n=72; 34.8%) mainly via pharmacies and the Drug Commission of the German Pharmaceutical Association. Manufacturer investigations for all lay IVD cases reported revealed underlying product defects in 53 cases (25.6%). Product failure was excluded in 80 cases (38.6%), which included a large number of user errors (n=34). Many cases (n=74, 35.7%) could not be clarified because the test strips and/or analysers were not returned to the manufacturer for further investigation. In most cases, product defects identified by manufacturer investigations were related to the test strips and not to the analysers. Because of the high proportion of cases without proven product failure, corrective actions were performed only in a subset (n=54, 26.1%) of the cases reported for IVDs specified for lay use. Conclusions: The results show that the governmental system for post-marketing surveillance of IVDs is an established tool to ensure product safety. The proportion of notifications for OTC products indicates that they should be the focus for action by the competent surveillance authorities. Clin Chem Lab Med 2007;45:396–401.
Identifying driving factors of ecosystem service trade-offs in mountainous region of southwestern China across geomorphic and climatic types

Abstract:Mountainous areas have obvious spatial differences in topography and climate, which could further cause heterogeneity of ecosystem service (ES) trade-offs. The characteristics of ES trade-offs had been extensively studied, however, the driving mechanism of which is still unclear in mountainous areas. Focusing on the Hengduan Mountain region (HDM) in southwest China, this study quantified the spatial aggregation effects of ESs and their trade-offs using a spatial autocorrelation analysis, and identified the dominant drives for each ES trade-off across various geomorphological and climatic zones. In terms of the spatial distribution, ESs and their trade-offs have a significant positive spatial correlation, which was mainly manifested as high-high (H-H) and low-low (L-L) value aggregations. The dominant factors for some trade-offs differed across geomorphological and climatic zones. Land use type was the main factor in flat areas for paired water yield (WY) with soil conservation (SC) and carbon storage (C). In plateau (PLA) and mid-subtropical (MS) climate zones, the main factors were land use type and soil types for paired WY and C, respectively. Temperature had a higher contribution for paired C and SC in flat and plateau areas. For the other trade-offs, the dominant factor was constant for different zones. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and soil type were the main factors for paired net primary productivity (NPP) with SC and C respectively. For trade-offs between habitat quality (HQ) and other ESs, and those among multiple ESs, land use type was the dominant drive, and the influence decreased with the increase of topographic relief. Therefore, attention should be paid to the ecological effects of land use change in future urban planning and development. The study will help guide zoning regional spatial planning and achieve mountain sustainable development.

Investigating Ecosystem Service Trade-Offs/Synergies and Their Influencing Factors in the Yangtze River Delta Region, China

Abstract:A comprehensive understanding of the ecosystem services (ESs) trade-off/synergy relationships has become increasingly important for ecological management and sustainable development. This study employed the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in China as the study area and investigated the spatiotemporal changes in three ESs, namely, carbon storage (CS), water purification (WP), and habitat quality (HQ). A trade-off/synergy degree (TSD) indicator was developed that allowed for the quantification of the trade-off/synergy intensity, and the spatial pattern of the TSD between ESs in the YRD region to be analyzed. Furthermore, a geographically weighted regression (GWR) model was used to analyze the relationship between the influencing factors and trade-offs/synergies. The results revealed that CS, WP, and HQ decreased by 0.28%, 2.49%, and 3.38%, respectively, from 2005 to 2015. The TSD indicator showed that the trade-off/synergy relationships and their magnitudes were spatially heterogeneous throughout the YRD region. The coefficients of the natural and socioeconomic factors obtained from the GWR indicated that their impacts on the trade-offs/synergies vary spatiotemporally. The impact factors had both positive and negative effects on the trade-offs/synergies. The findings of this study could improve the understanding of the spatiotemporal dynamics of trade-offs/synergies and their spatially heterogeneous correlations with related factors.

Abstract:The study of tradeoffs/synergies among ecosystem services (ESs) is highly significant for land-use planning and regional ecosystem optimization. Land-use change and topographic factors have important implications for ESs. Strengthening the comparative analysis of the capacity of ESs provided by different land-use types in specific regions, studying the topographic gradient effects of ecosystem service trade-offs/synergies with slope changes, and identifying the dominate trade-off/synergy relationship among ESs will help us to carry out ecosystem regulation according to local conditions through land-use layout optimization at a fine scale. Our research site was located in the Dabie Mountains of western Anhui Province, China (DBM), where, based on the InVEST software, R language, self-organizing maps (SOM), and GeoDA, the temporal and spatial variations of five typical ESs, including food supply, soil retention, water yield, carbon storage, and biodiversity maintenance from 2005 to 2020, were analyzed, and spatial distributions of the different ESs clusters were also recognized by using the SOM method. Moreover, the impacts of land-use type and slope on ESs, and the characteristics of trade-offs/synergies among the five ESs, were discussed. Results showed, firstly, that the total values of ESs showed a changing trend of "three increases and two decreases" from 2005 to 2020. Among the ESs, food supply, soil retention and water yield showed upward trends, with annual growth rates of 2.83%, 6.50% and 2.98%, respectively, whereas carbon storage and biodiversity maintenance showed downward trends, with annual decline rates of 0.03% and 0.07%, respectively. Second, the results showed that the Moran's I index of the total ESs was 0.3995 in 2005 and 0.4305 in 2020, respectively, indicating that they had significant spatial clustering characteristics. The Low-Low clustering regions with reduced changes were mainly in the central and northern parts of the study area, whereas the High-High clustering regions with increased changes were found distributed mainly in the south of the study area. Thirdly, it was found that cropland and woodland were the main contributors to the total amounts of ESs, but the supply capacity of ESs per unit area of woodland was the largest, constituting nearly 1/3 of the total supply capacity of the ESs. Last, the slope effect on trade-offs and synergies was significant between typical ecosystem service pairs in the study area; trade-offs were the main relationships between the pairs of ESs in the study area, which accounted for nearly 60% of all types of trade-offs/synergies during the 15 years. In addition, the spatial distributions of the trade-offs/synergies between ESs pairs were visualized clearly, and the six ES bundles were identified by using the SOM method at the township administrative scale. The identification of ecosystem service bundles is of great significance for the division of ecological functional zones and ecological regulation in the DBM.

Abstract:Research on the natural driving mechanism and trade-offs and synergies of ecosystem services (ES) is a prerequisite for the implementation of scientific integrated ecosystem management, especially in ecologically fragile alpine ecological barrier regions. This study mainly studies the spatiotemporal dynamics and natural driving mechanism of water yield (WY), soil conservation (SC), windbreak and sand fixation (WS) and carbon sequestration (CS) in the northeast of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, identifies the trade-off and synergy features between ES in horizontal space. The results showed that the distribution of four ES presents different geographical spatial patterns, and an obvious increasing trend during the study period. Seven natural factors (precipitation, temperature, windspeed, etc.) can explain 38.1~47.0% of the spatiotemporal dynamics of ES in 2000, 2010 and 2020. Vegetation characteristics and elevation are the main explanatory variables controlling ES spatial pattern with the total contribution rate of 29.3% in 2000 and 26.5% in 2010. Temperature and elevation are the two most critical natural factors affecting ES, with the contribution ratio of 29.9% in 2020. The contribution of single nature factor on each ES pattern is different in the same year, and show interannual changes in different year. The contributions of wind speed, precipitation and slope to SC are uncertain, and the effect of temperature on CS is nonlinear. The trade-off and synergy cluster areas are mostly agglomerated and embedded in the compatibility region, with the characteristics of regional differentiation. The trade-offs and synergies between ES generally present the characteristics of interannual fluctuation, except WY-SC and WS-CS, which show a weakening trend in 2000, 2010 and 2020. Based on the above findings, we further discussed the complex trade-off and synergy relationships of ES, and the results provide scientific support for sustainable development by creating win–win scenarios under future climate change trends.

Abstract:Clarifying the spatial and temporal changes in the ecosystem services (ES) supply and demand helps in providing comprehensive supporting information for ecological governance decisions. However, spatial mismatches of the ES supply and demand changes are often overlooked, thereby resulting in the lack of targeted decision-making. In this study, the spatiotemporal variations of ES supply and demand in Guangdong Province during 2000-2015 were quantitatively analyzed at watershed scale. Ecological zoning was conducted on the basis of the temporal changes of ES supply and demand. Spatial correlation of ES supply and demand changes in different zones was further explored. The results showed that, the changes of ES supply and demand showed obvious spatial heterogeneity. The changes in the Pearl River Delta were significant, with ES supply decreasing and ES demand increasing. The ES supply changes were significantly affected by the ES demand changes. All of the ES supply would be significantly affected in the “high supply change–high demand change” zone; grain production, tropical cyclone mitigation, flood mitigation and habitat quality have been significantly affected in the “low supply change–middle demand change” zone; carbon sequestration, landscape recreation, grain production, flood mitigation and habitat quality have been significantly affected in the “low supply change–low demand change” zone. The increase in the land use change may promote the impact of the ES demand changes on the ES supply changes. This study helped in integrating the change of ES supply and demand and its correlation into the ecological protection and restoration system, thus providing a new perspective and approach for a regional sustainable management.

Abstract:Driven by rapid urbanization, land use change has become a significant factor influencing ecosystem services (ESs). To support the decision-making process of city planners and policy makers, assessing the spatiotemporal changes associated with multiple ESs is vital. In this study, we developed a general structure to assess the changes of multiple ESs in Zengcheng, China. A new index also was developed to measure the comprehensive ecosystem service (CES). Trade-offs of various ESs were analyzed by using correlation analysis. We then designed four alternate scenarios to explore the optimal land use strategies to increase the CES value and minimize trade-offs among various ESs. Results demonstrated that rapid expansion of built-up land and traffic land resulted in a decrease of CES in Zengcheng from 2003 to 2013. Although the water supply, water purification, and vegetable and fruit production services increased, the climate regulation, soil conservation, biodiversity protection, recreation opportunity and grain production services decreased during the ten-year period. Government should implement land use policies and ecological engineering measures to improve soil conservation in the northern region; recreation opportunity in the central region; and carbon storage, water purification, biodiversity protection and recreation opportunity in the southern region. Among all alternative scenarios, woodland buffer and soil conservation scenarios exhibit the highest CES values, indicating that policies such as the "Ecological corridor construction" project and the "Grain for Green" project should be implemented. However, a caveat is that these policies improve the ESs at the expense of food production due to significant trade-off relationships. To minimize the trade-offs, a more sustainable intensification of agriculture should be adopted to increase food production without decreasing other ESs or occupying additional land. The land use strategies and ecological engineering measures in this study can provide a reliable reference for sustainable development of other urbanized regions in China.

Abstract:Increasing global urbanization has not only resulted in economic development but it has also caused a number of ecological issues, such as haze, global warming, and storm surges, which can end up hindering the development of human society in the long term. One method of maintaining the long-term growth of human ecosystems is by considering ecosystem services (ES) when making decisions over land use. This study provides information to aid with decision making in the maintenance of Beijing's ES provision in the long term. Firstly, three key ES, namely, carbon storage (CS), habitat quality (HQ), and water yield (WY), were evaluated by the InVEST model. Then, the spatial patterns of synergies and trade-offs among three ES at the city and grid scales were explored through the correlation coefficients analysis and geographically weighted regression (GWR). Finally, the strength of trade-offs among ES was calculated based on root mean squared error (RMSE), and the potential ecological risk areas are recognized. We discovered that (1) the total carbon storage decreases from 3.74 million tons in 2000 to 3.66 million tons in 2020, and HQ has the same trend, with its average value decreasing from 0.72 to 0.67; in contrast, water yield is more stable, increasing slightly from 8.22 × 1010 m3 in 2000 to 8.23 × 1010 m3 in 2020. (2) The synergies and trade-offs of ES are spatially heterogeneous. Among them, the correlation coefficients at the city-level indicated synergistic relationships among the three ES, but CS-WY and WY-HQ always have trade-off relationships at the grid level, where 37.88% of WY-HQ and 14.59% of CS-WY were trade-offs in 2020. (3) At the urban-rural interface, the trade-offs among ES are stronger than those in other regions. In rural-urban areas, the RMSE in CS-HQ, CS-WY and WY-HQ always had high values (>0.5), accounting for 16.72%, 9.33%, and 26.94% of the entire area, respectively; these areas are identified as potential ecological risk areas, which will be the focus area for future ES regulation. These findings provide opportunities for clear trade-offs among ES and promote positive synergies. In addition, land-use management may use the results to guide ecosystem service use, identify critical areas, and ensure regional sustainability in urban development.

Abstract:Understanding the scale effect of relationships among ecosystem services (ESs) and the factors influencing these relationships, is vital for sustainable management of ESs. Previous research has focused less on multiple scale units, and the driving mechanisms behind ESs interactions remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, we assessed the spatial distribution of water yield (WY), water purification (WP), and soil conservation (SC) across four spatial scales (3 km × 3 km grid, 5 km × 5 km grid, sub-watershed, and county scales) in the Lishui River Basin of China during 2020. Using the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs (InVEST) model, geographical weighted regression, and Pearson correlation analysis, we examined tradeoffs and synergies among these ESs at various scales. Additionally, we employed a geographic detector to analyze the reactions and scale effects among these tradeoffs/synergies and social-ecological factors. Our findings revealed the following: (1) Significant spatial heterogeneity in ESs was observed in the basin. The WY decreased from west (2511.65 mm) to east (890.06 mm), with high WP values concentrated in the eastern part, and high SC values (8.30 × 10 5 t/hm 2 ) found in densely forested and grassland areas surrounding water bodies. Forested and cultivated lands were key contributors to ESs in the basin. (2) Across the four investigated scales, tradeoffs or synergies between the same ESs becoming more pronounced as the scale increased. Notably, most ES relationships displayed their strongest synergies at the county scale, with certain spatial areas demonstrating change in interaction directions. (3) The explanatory power of single- or double-factor interactions increased with scale. ESs interactions were found to be closely linked to climatic factors, as well as topographic features (including slope gradient and elevation), with precipitation exhibiting relatively high explanatory power. The interaction of natural and social factors significantly outweighed the combined interaction of dual social factors. This indicated that socio-ecological factors, especially climate and topography, jointly influenced the intensity and direction of ES tradeoffs/synergies. Scale effects arose from the "peak cutting and valley filling" phenomenon during scale transitions. These insights hold significant value for guiding hierarchical management strategies for regional ESs and informing decisions regarding resource allocation.

Abstract:Understanding the complex interactions (i.e., trade-offs and synergies) among ecosystem services (ESs) and exploring land use optimisation are important to realize regional ecological governance and sustainable development. This study examined Guanzhong Region, Shaanxi Province, as the research object. We established 12 future land use scenarios and projected the future land use patterns under the future climate change scenarios and local development policies. Next, we assessed the four main ecosystem services—carbon sequestration (CS), habitat quality (HQ), soil conservation (SC), and food supply (FS) by using related formulas and the InVEST model. Furthermore, the production possibility frontier (PPF) was used to measure trade-offs and synergistic relationships among ESs, and extract the optimal ES group under the different target needs. The results are as follows: (1) In the future 12 land use scenarios of 2050 in Guanzhong Region, forested land increased evidently in the RCP2.6 ecological protection scenario (18,483.64 km). In the RCP6.0 rapid urban development scenario, construction land showed evident expansion in the central and northeastern areas (4764.52 km2). (2) Compared with the ESs under the future multiple scenarios, CS and HQ achieved the maximum value in the RCP8.5 ecological protection scenario. In the RCP2.6 ecological protection scenario, the amount of SC was the largest (3.81 × 106 t). FS in the RCP2.6 business as usual scenario got the maximum value (18.53 × 106 t). (3) By drawing the optimal PPF curve of multiple scenarios in 2050, trade-off relationships were found between FS and CS, HQ, and SC, and synergistic relationships were found between CS, HQ, and SC. Next, the optimal ES groups under the fitted curve were selected by comparing with the ESs of 2018, and adjusting the land use areas and spatial pattern to finally optimise the relationships between ES and achieve the best land use spatial pattern.

Abstract:Understanding the trade-offs among ecosystem services (ESs) at multiple scales is a key challenge to effective environmental management. However, the scale effect of ESs trade-offs in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) has received little attention. This study investigated the scale effects of ESs trade-offs in Bailongjiang Watershed (BLJW), a typical transitional ecotone from the Loess Plateau to the Tibetan Plateau with multiple ESs, intensive human activities and frequent geological disasters in the Eastern Margin of the QTP, China. Four key ESs including food supply (FS), soil conservation (SC), water conservation (WC), and habitat quality (HQ) in BLJW in 1990, 2002, and 2016 were mapped to analyze the scale effects at the watershed, county, and township scales. The results indicated varying scale-related temporal and spatial relationships among FS, SC, WC, and HQ. The trade-offs between FS-SC and FS-WC initially increased and then decreased during 1990–2002 and 2002–2016, respectively, while the trade-offs between SC-WC, SC-HQ, HQ-WC, and HQ-FS first decreased and then increased at the same period. The magnitudes of the trade-offs among the four ESs are in the order of watershed scale > township scale > county scale. Among the major land-use types in BLJW, the trade-offs between WC-FS and between HQ-FS in farmland and grassland were higher than those of other land uses. There is a strong trade-off between SC-HQ in forestland and a weak trade-off between SC-WC in farmland and grassland. The trade-offs between the six ESs pairs varied and were scale-dependent mainly due to spatial heterogeneity in the landscape and in human activities. Understanding the ESs trade-offs at the watershed, county, and township scales provides a scientific basis for the formulation of environmental management strategies at appropriate spatial scales. At the BLJW watershed scale, more attention should be paid on farmland and grassland planning and its management, also, forestland should be enlarged if possible. At the county and township scales, land consolidation and planning should be paid more attention to develop ecological agricultural tourism and multi-functional landscapes for strategic spatial planning and integrated watershed management.

Abstract:Identifying ecosystem service functions, clarifying the spatiotemporal trade-offs and synergies of terrestrial ecosystem services and their driving mechanisms, and exploring differentiated ecological functional zoning are crucial steps in achieving healthy regional ecosystem management, and are conducive to developing diversified ecological restoration strategies, establishing a robust cross-regional collaborative management mechanism, implementing differentiated ecological management strategies, and contributing to the construction of a Beautiful China. This paper, based on the InVEST model, Pearson correlation, GeoDetector, and Spatiotemporal Geographically Weighted Regression models, constructs a spatial quantification model of the trade-offs and synergies among five key ecosystem service functions—habitat quality, soil retention, water conservation, food supply, and carbon sequestration—of China's terrestrial ecosystems from 2000 to 2020. It explores the influencing factors of terrestrial ecosystem services in China and their spatiotemporal heterogeneity, thereby investigating the future strategies for ecological functional zoning and management of China's national land space. The results indicate that: (1) during 2000–2020, China's food supply and soil conservation have increased. However, the habitat quality, water conservation, and carbon sequestration have decreased. (2) Significant spatial and temporal heterogeneities exist in the key ecosystem services of China's terrestrial ecosystems. (3) Natural, economic, and social factors all impact China's terrestrial key ecosystem services. Among them, slope, annual average precipitation, land development intensity, and vegetation coverage are the main influencing factors, and different factors exhibit significant spatial heterogeneity. (4) Significant trade-offs/synergy effects among critical terrestrial ecosystem services exist in China. (5) China's national territory is divided into four ecological protection functional zones: ecological restoration areas, ecological control areas, resilient development areas, and ecological conservation areas, and explores differentiated zoning optimization control paths.

Abstract:Uncovering the trade-offs and synergy relationship of multiple ecosystem services (ESs) is important for scientific ecosystem management and the improvement of ecological service functions. In this study, we investigated the spatiotemporal changes of four typical ES types (i.e., water yield (WY), carbon storage (CS), soil conservation (SC), and habitat quality (HQ)) from 2001 to 2020 in the Han River basin (HRB). Meanwhile, the trade-offs and synergies between paired ESs and the socioecological drivers of these ESs were further explored. The results showed that grassland, cropland, and bare land decreased by 12,141.3 km2, 624.09 km2, and 22.1 km2 during the study period, respectively, which can be attributed to their conversion to forests in the HRB. Temporally, the WY, CS, and SC all showed a continuously increasing trend. Spatially, WY and HQ exhibited bipolar clustering characteristics, with WY exhibiting low-value clustering in the upstream and high-value clustering in the downstream, while CS showed the clustering characteristics of a scattered distribution of cold and hot spots from 2001 to 2020. The spatial patterns of aggregation locations in CS and HQ were relatively similar, with clusters of higher ES values mainly distributed in the western and central regions and clusters of lower ES values mainly located in the eastern and southeastern regions, while the aggregation of WY was spatially concentrated. Overall, the CS showed a significant positive correlation with HQ, but a significant negative correlation with WY. Spatially, WY and HQ, CS, and SC showed a substantial trade-off relationship in the northwest and southeast parts of the study area, while HQ, CS, and SC mainly exhibited a synergistic relationship in most parts of the study area. Slope and temperature had high influencing factor coefficients on multiple ESs; the mixed effect of terrain and natural factors was significantly greater than the impact of a single factor on ESs, and terrain factors played an essential role in the changes in ESs. The findings can provide technical and theoretical support for integrated scientific ecosystem management and sustainable development at the local scale.

Abstract:Scientific measurement and identification of the spatiotemporal differentiation features of ecosystem service (ES) trade-offs/synergies and their controlling factors in karst regions are crucial to the effective distribution of environmental resources. In this paper, Puding County, a typical karst county in southern China, was taken as the study area. The Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs model, and other models were used to reveal the spatial stratified heterogeneity and trade-off/synergy relationship of carbon storage, water conservation, soil conservation and net primary productivity. An optimal parameter geographic detector model was used to scientifically identify the drivers of the spatially stratified heterogeneity of the ESs. The research findings are as follows: (1) the carbon storage, WC, SC, and NPP increased by 16.72%, 162.81%, 145.55%, and 177.97%, respectively. (2) Ecosystem services supply was greater than 52% for both paddy fields and dryland. The hot spots of ESs were concentrated in the forest land area, and the cold spots were concentrated in the construction land, dry land, and paddy fields. (3) The water conservation and SC, as well as WC and CS, exhibited diminishing trade-offs. (4) The lithology, slope, annual precipitation, and potential evapotranspiration were the primary drivers affecting the ESs. The lithology ∩ potential evapotranspiration explained 37.48% of the spatial differentiation of the NPP, and the lithology ∩ annual precipitation explained 25.08% of the WC. The findings of this study provide scientific guidance for future efforts to support regional economic growth and the sustainable karst ecosystem development globally.

Abstract:The transformation of ecosystem structure leads to changes in ecosystem services (ESs) and their relationship. However, most research in this area has focused on particular scales and timeframes, often overlooking the significance of spatial and temporal variations. Therefore, we used the equivalent value method to evaluate seven typical ESs in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) between 2000 and 2020: food production (FP), water supply (WS), climate regulation (CR), environmental purification (EP), soil conservation (SC), biodiversity maintenance (BM), and aesthetic landscape (AL). We further employed the Spearman correlation coefficient and bivariate Moran's I to evaluate the relationship of ESs and their spatial heterogeneity at grid, township, county and city scales. Our results show that (1) All ESs except AL exhibited a fluctuating upward trend from 2000 to 2020, resulting in a total increase in ecosystem service (ES) value of RMB 650.63 billion. (2) Approximately 70% of the ES pairs demonstrated a synergistic relationship, with the exception of FP and other ESs, which mainly showed a trade-off. (3) With the scale increased from grid to city level, the degree of trade-off between FP and other ESs strengthened at different levels, while the synergy degree of among other ESs gradually decreased. (4) The relationship between ESs demonstrated strong spatial heterogeneity, with FP and other ESs exhibiting trade-offs primarily in the northern and southern YRD, while other ES pairs exhibited mostly synergy in these regions. This study provides scientific information for governments to optimize land use distribution and improve ESs.
