Abstract:Atmospheric parameter profile plays a vital role in the studies on meteorology and quantitative remote sensing. Besides measurement of the radiosonde and satellite remote sensing, the atmospheric temperature profile can be predicted by the time series model. However, the performance of the time series model is limited by the weak correlation of temperature data in the stratosphere. In this study, to predict monthly mean atmospheric temperature profile, a hybrid model named seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average and denoising autoencoder (SARIMA-DAE), which combines the traditional time series model with an artificial neural network (ANN), is proposed. The SARIMA is first used to predict the temperature at each altitude level independently; then, the DAE is employed to denoise the predicted temperature profile by SARIMA. The data set used is the L3 monthly mean gridded product of atmospheric infrared sounder, an instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite. Taking Maoming, a city in China, as an example, the absolute errors are within 1 K. The mean squared error and mean absolute percentage error on the test set are 0.12 and 0.0012, respectively. Compared with SARIMA, support vector machine regression, and ANN models, experimental results show that the SARIMA-DAE model improves the prediction accuracy at almost all altitude levels. Especially in the stratosphere, the advantage of the hybrid model is more pronounced. The model we proposed should, therefore, be of value to estimate missing data and predict atmospheric parameter profiles.

Evaluation and correction of sub-seasonal dynamic model forecast of precipitation in eastern China

Abstract:Assessing the capability of sub-seasonal rainfall forecast of dynamic model and proposing correction method is quite an important topic in current climate research field. From the perspective of rainfall amount, rainy days and rainfall-belt evolution, the sub-seasonal forecast ability of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model for the main rainy-season rainfall in eastern China is evaluated. Evaluation results show that the forecast biases increase gradually with the increase of forecast lead time, characterized by the predicted rainfall amount being obviously higher and the rainy days being much longer than observation. In order to reduce the forecast biases of sub-seasonal rainfall forecast of ECMWF model, the rainy day-based correction (RDC) method is proposed in this study. Cross validation results indicate that RDC method can modify the number of rainy days forecast of ECMWF model with the SCC of rainy days increasing by 12.96% ~ 18.62%, and the RMSE decreasing by 56.49% ~ 63.78%. The problem of maximum continuous rainy days being too long in the model forecast can be also improved. Meanwhile, the spatial correlation coefficient (SCC) of rainfall amount forecast of the ECMWF model with the observation weakly increases by 0.61% ~ 1.56% and the root mean square error (RMSE) decreases by 3.50% ~ 7.60% after the RDC treatment. Therefore, RDC method presents a good performance on improving the sub-seasonal forecast of rainy days, and maximum continuous rainy days, which can be further applied in other models' sub-seasonal forecast error correction.

Abstract:The accurate and reliable relative humidity (RH) prediction holds immense significance in effectively controlling the breeding cycle health and optimizing egg production performance in intensive poultry farming environments. However, current RH prediction research mainly focuses on short-term point predictions, which cannot meet the demand for accurate RH control in poultry houses in intensive farming. To compensate for this deficiency, a hybrid medium and long-term RH prediction model capable of precise point and interval prediction is proposed in this study. Firstly, the complexity of RH is reduced using a data denoising method that combines complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) and permutation entropy. Secondly, important environmental factors are selected from feature correlation and change trends. Thirdly, based on the results of data denoising and feature selection, a BiGRU-Attention model incorporating an attention mechanism is established for medium and long-term RH point prediction. Finally, the Gaussian kernel density estimation (KDE-Gaussian) method is used to fit the point prediction error, and the RH prediction interval at different confidence levels is estimated. This method was applied to analyze the actual collection of waterfowl (Magang geese) environmental datasets from October 2022 to March 2023. The results indicate that the CEEMDAN-FS-BiGRU-Attention model proposed in this study has excellent medium and long-term point prediction performance. In comparison to LSTM, the mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) are reduced by 57.7%, 48.2%, and 56.6%, respectively. Furthermore, at different confidence levels, the prediction interval formed by the KDE-Gaussian method is reliable and stable, which meets the need for accurate RH control in intensive farming environments.

Evaluation and Error Correction of the ECMWF Subseasonal Precipitation Forecast over Eastern China During Summer

Abstract:Subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) prediction is a highly regarded skill around the world. To improve the S2S forecast skill, an S2S prediction project and an extensive database have been established. In this study, the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model hindcast, which participates in the S2S prediction project, is systematically assessed by focusing on the hindcast quality for the summer accumulated ten-day precipitation at lead times of 0–30 days during 1995–2014 in eastern China. Additionally, the hindcast error is corrected by utilizing the preceding sea surface temperature (SST). The metrics employed to measure the ECMWF hindcast performance indicate that the ECMWF model performance drops as the lead time increases and exhibits strong interannual differences among the five subregions of eastern China. In addition, the precipitation forecast skill of the ECMWF hindcast is best at approximately 15 days in some areas of Southeast China; after correcting the forecast error, the forecast skill is increased to 30 days. At lead times of 0–30 days, regardless of whether the forecast error is corrected, the root mean square errors are lowest in Northeast China. After correcting the forecast error, the performance of the ECMWF hindcast shows better improvement in depicting the quantity and temporal and spatial variation of precipitation at lead times of 0–30 days in eastern China. The false alarm ratio (FAR), probability of detection (POD), and equitable threat score (ETS) reveal that the ECMWF model has a preferable performance at forecasting accumulated ten-day precipitation rates of approximately 20∼50 mm and indicates an improved hindcast quality after the forecast error correction. In short, adopting the preceding SST to correct the summer subseasonal precipitation of the ECMWF hindcast is preferable.
A Method for Correcting the Meteorological Data from Regional Climate Model and Its Application in Crop Simulation

Abstract:【Objective】A method for correcting Regional Climate models(RCMs) output was developed in this research,which will lay a foundation for crop model prediction under future climate scenarios.【Method】 The daily rainfall intensity,rainfall frequency,solar radiation,maximal and minimal temperatures output data of RegCM3 from 1994 to 2010 were corrected based on the historical daily weather records from 1960 to 1993 in Xuzhou,Huai’an,Zhengzhou,Weifang and Shijiazhuang.【Result】 Compared with the raw meteorological data from RegCM3,the corrected monthly mean meteorological variables,the corrected monthly meteorological variables,and the probability distribution of daily rainfall,temperature and solar radiation from 1994 to 2010 agreed better with the observed values,especially for the extreme high temperature and high rainfall frequency.In addition,dry spell length after correction in five eco-sites was consistent with the observed values.The determination coefficient and normalized root mean square error(NRMSE) between observed and simulated yields from WheatGrow model with daily corrected RegCM3 at above five eco-sites reached 0.72 and 10.5%,which were 0.35 higher and 8.2% lower than those with daily raw RegCM3 outputs,respectively【.Conclusion】Therefore,the correction method in this research could be further used to correct the future meteorological data which generated by RegCM3,and the corrected meteorological data could be taken as the input data of crop model to improve the prediction accuracy of crop model.
Integration of Extreme Gradient Boosting Feature Selection Approach with Machine Learning Models: Application of Weather Relative Humidity Prediction.

Abstract:Relative humidity (RH) is one of the important processes in the hydrology cycle which is highly stochastic. Accurate RH prediction can be highly beneficial for several water resources engineering practices. In this study, extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) approach “as a selective input parameter” was coupled with support vector regression, random forest (RF), and multivariate adaptive regression spline (MARS) models for simulating the RH process. Meteorological data at two stations (Kut and Mosul), located in Iraq region, were selected as a case study. Numeric and graphic indicators were used for model’s evaluation. In general, all models revealed good prediction performance. In addition, research finding approved the importance of all the meteorological data for the RH simulation. Further, the integration of the XGBoost approach managed to abstract the essential parameters for the RH simulation at both stations and attained good predictability with less input parameters. At Kut station, RF model attained the best prediction results with minimum root mean square error (RMSE = 4.92) and mean absolute error (MAE = 3.89) using maximum air temperature and evaporation parameters. Whereas MARS model reported the best prediction results at Mosul station using all the utilized climate parameters with minimum (RMSE = 3.80 and MAE = 2.86). Overall, the research results evidenced the capability of the proposed coupled machine learning models for modeling the RH at different coordinates within a semi-arid environment.

Abstract:We describe a case of vocal cord palsy leading to respiratory obstruction during carotid endarterectomy under cervical plexus block in a patient who had preexisting contralateral vocal cord paralysis subsequent to a previous thyroidectomy. The patient required immediate tracheal intubation and subsequent tracheostomy to maintain the airway postoperatively. Care must be given to avoid contralateral vocal cord paralysis in the presence of a preexisting vocal cord palsy.
Improving prediction skills of winter temperature in China using autumn cryosphere

Abstract:In this study, the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) was performed at the anomaly field of the 600-station winter mean temperature in China during the period of 1979-2012. Then, using the observed antecedent Arctic sea ice concentration (SIC) and Eurasian snowcover (SNC) data, the key areas where SIC and SNC anomalies in autumn have significant effects on the principal variation of following temperature in China are calculated, and based on those areas, the SIC and SNC indices are built.Next, the standard linear regression models which can be used to predict the mean winter temperature at individual stations are established, using one or two cryospheric predictor indices.Through the statistical cross-validation, the mean of the anomaly correlation coefficient (ACC) and root mean square error skill score (RMSESS) between the observed and predicted temperatures are used to quantitatively evaluate the predictive skill of cryospheric factors for the winter mean temperature in China.The results showthat the skill of hindcasts is greatly different among regions between the single September SIC predictor and November SNC predictor.The SIC index has more noticeable skill on central north China, while the November SNC index has more noticeable skill on northeastern China.While hindcasts using both September SIC and November SNC predictors are better than the single on area and score, almost all stations except the Tibetan Plateau area showsignificant skill. The grid points with superior skill are centered on north-central, northeastern and northern China, where the regional average ACC is 0.58, and the method outperforms a climatological hindcast is 18.7％.The results obtained in this study suggest that it is very important to incorporate cryosphere variability in seasonal prediction systems.
Bias Correction of the Hourly Satellite Precipitation Product Using Machine Learning Methods Enhanced with High-Resolution WRF Meteorological Simulations

Abstract:Accurate precipitation data are crucial in atmospheric and hydrological studies, especially for water resource management and disaster early warning. Satellite precipitation product (SPP) with high spatiotemporal resolution has been regarded as a valuable alternative precipitation source to ground observations. However, the hourly SPP generally performs poorly compared to daily SPP, thereby bias correction is urgently required. This study investigates the viability of utilizing machine learning methods to correct the bias of the hourly Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement-Early (IMERG-E) product. Meanwhile, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model is utilized to generate high-resolution fields of four hourly meteorological variables, namely, temperature at 2 m (TEMP2), specific humidity at 2 m (Q2), wind direction at 10 m (WDIR10), and wind speed at 10 m (WSPD10), which further serve as covariates in machine learning models to enhance the correction process. Four machine learning models were developed, i.e., Random Forest (RF) and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Networks (Bi-LSTM) without WRF-simulated covariates, and RF-WRF and Bi-LSTM-WRF with meteorological covariates. The results demonstrated that incorporating WRFsimulated meteorological covariates improved model performance. Specifically, correlation coefficient (CC) values increased from 0.47 (RF) to 0.51 (RF-WRF) and rose from 0.55 (Bi-LSTM) to 0.60 (Bi-LSTM-WRF), along with reduced root mean square error (RMSE) and increased critical success index (CSI) values. Furthermore, two Bi-LSTM models consistently outperformed two RF models. Overall, the Bi-LSTM-WRF model emerged as the most effective correction method, which increased CC from 0.43 (IMERG-E) to 0.60, reduced RMSE from 1.91 mm to 1.08 mm, and enhanced CSI from 0.34 to 0.41. This study underscores the potential of integrating highresolution WRF meteorological outputs into machine learning frameworks for correcting hourly SPPs, contributing significantly to the advancement of precipitation estimation in meteorological and hydrological applications.
Partial Least Regression Approach to Forecast the East Asian Winter Monsoon Using Eurasian Snow Cover and Sea Surface Temperature

Abstract:Seasonal prediction of the East Asian (EA) winter monsoon (EAWM) is of great significance yet a challenging issue. In this study, three statistical seasonal prediction models for the EAWM are established using three leading modes of the Eurasian snow cover (ESC), the first leading mode of sea surface temperature (SST) and the four leading modes of the combination of the ESC and SST in preceding autumn, respectively. These leading modes are identified by the partial-least square (PLS) regression. The first PLS (PLS1) mode for the ESC features significantly anomalous snow cover in Siberia and Tibetan Plateau regions. The ESC second PLS (PLS2) mode corresponds to large areas of snow cover anomalies in the central Siberia, whereas the third PLS (PLS3) mode a meridional seesaw pattern of ESC. The SST PLS1 mode basically exhibits an El Niño-Southern Oscillation developing phase in equatorial eastern Pacific and significant SST anomalies in North Atlantic. A strong EAWM tends to emerge in a La Niña year concurrent with cold SST anomalies in the North Atlantic, and vice versa. After a 35-year training period (1967–2001), three PLS seasonal prediction models are constructed and the 11-year hindcast is performed for the period of 2002–2012, respectively. The PLS model based on combination of the autumn ESC and SST exhibits the best hindcast skill among the three models, its correlation coefficient between the observation and the hindcast reaching 0.86. This indicates that this physical-based PLS model may provide another practical tool for the EAWM. In addition, the relative contribution of the ESC and SST is also examined by assessing the hindcast skills of the other two PLS models constructed solely by the ESC or SST. Possible physical mechanisms are also discussed.
Immediate Versus Delayed Hysterectomy for Endometrial Carcinoma: Surgical Morbidity and Hospital Stay

Abstract:Presented is a retrospective review of the intraoperative complications, postoperative morbidity, and length of hospitalization in 138 patients with stage I endometrial carcinoma treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital from January 1,1977 to December 31, 1981. One group (stage IA, grade 1) was treated with surgery alone; two groups were treated with preoperative intracavitary radium, followed with either an immediate or a delayed hysterectomy. The three groups were comparable in age, weight, and major preoperative medical problems. The mean estimated blood loss during surgery and transfusion requirements during hospitalization were similar for all three groups. The duration of the surgery in the immediate group was longer than the other two groups. The occurrence of febrile morbidity and major postoperative complications in the three groups was similar, except for bacteruria, which was significantly more common in the immediate group. The length of the postoperative hospitalization was the same for each group; however, the delayed group as compared with the immediate group had a total hospitalization of two days longer. Hence, in the current study, immediate hysterectomy did not significantly increase the surgical or postoperative morbidity rate, compared with delayed hysterectomy. The single hospital stay in the former treatment group represented cost containment.
Spatiotemporal Modes Characteristics and SARIMA Prediction of Total Column Water Vapor over China during 2002–2022 Based on AIRS Dataset

Abstract:The total column water vapor (TCWV) is a relatively active component in the atmosphere and an important detection object of climate change. Exploring the spatiotemporal modes characteristics of TCWV and predicting its changing trends can provide a reference for human beings to deal with climate change and formulate corresponding countermeasures. The TCWV data over China region by using the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) dataset from 2002 to 2022 were obtained. The empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis, linear regression, Mann-Kendall (M-K) mutation test, Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) model and other methods were used to discuss the spatiotemporal modes characteristics of TCWV in the China region on the monthly, seasonal, and annual scales and verify the rationality of the forecast of the monthly average trend of TCWV in the next year. The obtained results show that: (1) The annual and seasonal scales spatial distributions of TCWV in China are roughly consistent, with obvious latitudinal distribution characteristics. That is, the TCWV in the low latitude region, especially in the tropical region, is larger, and it gradually decreases with the increase of the latitude. Furthermore, the TCWV in the eastern region is higher than that in the western region at the same latitude; (2) The EOF analysis results show that its first mode can better reflect the typical distribution characteristics of the southeast-northwest positive distribution in China; (3) From 2002 to 2022, the TCWV in China shows an upward trend and the TCWV increases at a rate of 0.0413 kg/m2 per year, which may be related to the long-term increase of air temperature in recent years; (4) The inter-monthly variation of TCWV shows a slightly positive skewed 'bell-shaped' curve, with the maximum in summer, the minimum in winter and the similar distribution in spring and autumn. As can be seen from the M-K curves of the four seasons, each season has different mutation points; (5) Forecasting the TCWV was done using time series monthly average values from September 2002 to February 2022. SARIMA (3, 1, 3) × (0, 1, 1, 12) was identified as the best model. This model passed the residual normality test and the forecasting evaluation statistics show that MAPE = 2.65%, MSE = 0.3229 and the R2-score = 0.9949. As demonstrated by the results, the SARIMA model is a good model for forecasting TCWV in the China region.

Testing the Ability of RIEMS2.0 to Simulate Multi-Year Precipitation and Air Temperature in China

Abstract:RIEMS2.0 (Regional Integrated Environment Modeling System, Version 2.0) is now being developed starting from RIEMS1.0 by the Key Laboratory of Regional Climate Environment Research for Temperate East Asia, Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. In order to test RIEMS2.0’s ability to simulate long-term climate and its changes, as well as provide a basis for further development and applications, we compare simulated precipitation and air temperature from 1980 to 2007 (simulation duration from Jan. 1, 1979 to Dec. 31, 2007) under different cumulus parameterization schemes with the observed data. The results show that RIEMS2.0 can reproduce the spatial distribution of precipitation and air temperature, but that the model overestimates precipitation with the rainfall center moving northwestward and underestimates air temperature for annual simulations. Annual and interannual variations in precipitation and air temperature for different climate subregions are well captured by the model. Further analysis of summer and winter simulations shows that precipitation is overestimated, except for the Jianghuai-Jiangnan subregions in the winter, and the air temperature bias in the summer is weaker than in the winter. There are larger biases for precipitation and air temperature in semiarid subregions. Anomalies in precipitation and air temperature are also well captured by the model. Although a similar distribution can be found between observed data and simulated results under different cumulus parameterization schemes, these show differences in intensity and location. In sum, RIEMS2.0 shows good stability and does well in simulating the long-term climate and its changes in China.
Ensemble Learning for Bias Correction of Station Temperature Forecast Based on ECMWF Products

Abstract:To improve the accuracy of numerical weather prediction (NWP) and its ability for extreme weather event forecast, a hybrid model based on ensemble learning is proposed and tested by post-processing one of the most successfully predicted variables, temperature at 2 m height. The NWP dataset used is provided by The International Grand Global Ensemble (TIGGE) project in the European Centre from Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), with a horizontal resolution of 0.125°×0.125° and lead times from 6 to 168 h (with a 6 h increment, 28 lead times totally). The observation is collected from 301 stations covering China expect for Xizang and Qinghai, including 4 variables, temperature, pressure, relative humidity and wind speed every 3 hours. The ECMWF product and observation span a period of 6 years ranging from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2018. Data from 2013 to 2017 are used for machine learning and model training, and data in 2018 are used for testing. The hybrid model named ALS consists of 2 stages. Stage 1 trains two separate models, a long short-term memory combined with a fully connected neural network (LSTM-FCN) and an artificial neural network (ANN). Stage 2 blends the output of LSTM-FCN and ANN using a linear regression (LR) model. The correction result is the output of LR. ALS model is then applied to correct the station temperature forecast with lead time from 6 to 168 h. Outcomes are verified by observations from stations, while LR model is used as control model. ALS model reduces the average root mean square error (RMSE) of the station temperature forecast by 0.61℃ (19.6%), and by 0.23℃ (8.4%) compared with the LR model. ALS model reduces RMSE at more stations compared with LR model (252 vs. 186). ALS model is particularly effective in areas where the accuracy of station temperature forecast is low, such as Guizhou and Yunnan. Forecasts for stations in these areas are significantly improved with an average RMSE reduction over 40%. Moreover, case analysis of high temperature show that ALS model improves the forecast accuracy of high temperature events significantly, with a RMSE reduction of 30.5% at 4 stations compared to station temperature forecast. It demonstrates that ensemble learning can be used to supplement weather forecast.

Subseasonal forecasting, which is more difficult than weather forecasting, however, has remained as a blank area in meteorological service for a long period of time. To improve the accuracy of subseasonal forecasting of China precipitation, this work introduces the machine learning method proposed by Hwang et al. in 2019 to predict the precipitation in China 2–6 weeks in advance. The authors used a non-linear regression model called local linear regression together with multitask feature election (MultiLLR) model and chosen 21 meteorological elements as candidate predictors to integrate diverse meteorological observation data. This method automatically eliminates irrelevant predictors so as to establish the forecast equations using multitask feature selection process. The experiments demonstrate that the pressure and Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) are the most important physical factors. The average prediction skill is 0.11 during 2011–2016, and there are seasonal differences in forecasting skills, evidenced by higher forecast skills of winter and spring seasons than summer and autumn seasons. The proposed method can provide effective and indicative guidance for the subseasonal prediction of precipitation in China. By adding another three factors, Arctic Oscillation (AO) index, Western North Pacific Monsoon (WNPM) index and Western North Pacific Subtropical High (WNPSH) index into the MultiLLR model, the authors find that AO can improve the forecast skill of China precipitation to the maximum extent from 0.11 to 0.13, followed by WNPSH. Moreover, the ensemble skill of our model and CFSv2 is 0.16. This work shows that our subseasonal prediction of China precipitation should be benefited from the MultiLLR model.

On the Applicability of Temperature and Precipitation Data from CMIP3 for China.

Abstract:Global Circulation Models (GCMs) contributed to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) and are widely used in global change research. This paper assesses the performance of the AR4 GCMs in simulating precipitation and temperature in China from 1960 to 1999 by comparison with observed data, using system bias (B), root-mean-square error (RMSE), Pearson correlation coefficient (R) and Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (E) metrics. Probability density functions (PDFs) are also fitted to the outputs of each model. It is shown that the performance of each GCM varies to different degrees across China. Based on the skill score derived from the four metrics, it is suggested that GCM 15 (ipsl_cm4) and GCM 3 (cccma_cgcm_t63) provide the best representations of temperature and precipitation, respectively, in terms of spatial distribution and trend over 10 years. The results also indicate that users should apply carefully the results of annual precipitation and annual temperature generated by AR4 GCMs in China due to poor performance. At a finer scale, the four metrics are also used to obtain best fit scores for ten river basins covering mainland China. Further research is proposed to improve the simulation accuracy of the AR4 GCMs regarding China.

Abstract:Climate change has an immense impact on the environment, ecology, agriculture, and economy. As the most influential climate prediction platform in the world, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change provides important data on predicted future climate change trends. Based on 10 models under the RCP8.5 and RCP4.5 emission scenarios, in this study, we obtained 0.5 × 0.5° data through down-scaling data processing and predicted future rainfall and temperature changes in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region of China. Combined with historical observed data of 198 meteorological stations in the region, the relationships between the predicted values of the model and the measured values were analyzed using the Taylor diagram method. The results show that (1) the future precipitation capacity assessed by the global climate system is generally higher than observed data; (2) for assessment of future temperatures, RCP8.5 shows a larger increase than RCP4.5; (3) for the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region, our results show that the MIROC-ESM-CHE model is more consistent with the evaluation of future precipitation capacity, the HadGEM2-ES model is more consistent with the future RCP4.5 scenario temperature evaluation, and the MIROC-ESM-CHEM model is more consistent with the future RCP8.5 scenario temperature evaluation.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Large-scale outbreaks of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) have occurred frequently and caused neurological sequelae in mainland China since 2008. Prediction of the activity of HFMD epidemics a few weeks ahead is useful in taking preventive measures for efficient HFMD control.METHODS: Samples obtained from children hospitalized with HFMD in Zhengzhou, Henan, China, were examined for the existence of pathogens with reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) from 2008 to 2012. Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) models for the weekly number of HFMD, Human enterovirus 71(HEV71) and CoxsackievirusA16 (CoxA16) associated HFMD were developed and validated. Cross correlation between the number of HFMD hospitalizations and climatic variables was computed to identify significant variables to be included as external factors. Time series modeling was carried out using multivariate SARIMA models when there was significant predictor meteorological variable.RESULTS: 2932 samples from the patients hospitalized with HFMD, 748 were detected with HEV71, 527 with CoxA16 and 787 with other enterovirus (other EV) from January 2008 to June 2012. Average atmospheric temperature (T{avg}) lagged at 2 or 3 weeks were identified as significant predictors for the number of HFMD and the pathogens. SARIMA(0,1,0)(1,0,0)52 associated with T{avg} at lag 2 (T{avg}-Lag 2) weeks, SARIMA(0,1,2)(1,0,0)52 with T{avg}-Lag 2 weeks and SARIMA(0,1,1)(1,1,0)52 with T{avg}-Lag 3 weeks were developed and validated for description and predication the weekly number of HFMD, HEV71-associated HFMD, and Cox A16-associated HFMD hospitalizations.CONCLUSION: Seasonal pattern of certain HFMD pathogens can be associated by meteorological factors. The SARIMA model including climatic variables could be used as an early and reliable monitoring system to predict annual HFMD epidemics.

Abstract:Evapotranspiration and soil moisture content (SMC) are key elements of the hydrological cycle. Accurate prediction of the dynamic processes of evapotranspiration and soil water is essential for irrigation and water management. Here, the boosted regression tree (BRT) method was employed to quantify environmental controls on actual evapotranspiration (ETa), potential evapotranspiration (ET0), and SMC using monitoring data from the Wudaogou hydrological experimental station. The results indicated that: (1) the BRT algorithm was effective in predicting the relative control of different environmental factors on ETa, ET0, and SMC; and (2) vapor pressure deficit (VPD) was the most important factor affecting daily ET0, and sunshine duration (SSD) also played a nonnegligible role. The results further explained the phenomenon of the "evaporation paradox" in the study area. SSD could be a leading control on daily ETa, followed by VPD, leaf area index (LAI). (3) Among the underground factors, groundwater level (GL) and LAI played a dominant role in the relative contribution to SMC. Among the aboveground factors, relative humidity (RH) and soil temperature (TS) have a relatively large influence on SMC. (4) The differences in SMC at different depths were determined by multiple influencing factors, including LAI, VPD, and precipitation (P). This study also underscores the importance of vegetation variations to hydrological cycle processes. In general, climate warming and an increase in extreme rainfall events will increase the control of temperature on SMC and weaken the control of P on SMC in the future.

A Hybrid Statistical-Dynamical Prediction Model for Summer Precipitation in Northwestern China Based on Ncep Cfsv2

Abstract:As a typical arid/semi-arid area, summer rainfall in northwestern China (NWC) is critical for the ecological environment there. The NWC summer rainfall prediction using statistical and dynamical models shows very poor performance. The dynamical model NCEP CFSv2 shows very low prediction skill in NWC summer precipitation (NWC PI). This study first investigates the soil moisture and SST signals in the preceding months, and CFSv2 April predicted summer large-scale circulation anomalies significantly related with NWC PI during 1982-2016 (2011 missing). The April soil moisture in the upstream central Asia, and SST in the preceding winter over tropical Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Ocean are identified as predictor candidates in the observation. Six other April predicted large-scale circulation factors in the lower to upper level are selected as potential predictors in CFSv2. The potential model predictors are selected generally based on three criteria: where CFSv2 has significant prediction skill, and NWC PI is significantly correlated with the variable in both the observation and its counterpart in CFSv2 prediction. Hybrid models are then constructed based on different predictor combinations. The leave-one-out cross validation illustrates that the hybrid model using three predictors (April soil moisture in the upstream central Asia, April predicted zonal wind over the Maritime Continent, April predicted SLP over the Mediterranean Sea) presents best performance, with anomalies correlation coefficient–ACC of 0.65, percentage of the same sign–PERC 76.5%, relative error–RE 6.97%, and root mean square error–RMSE 0.344 mm/day for NWC PI. The April soil moisture in the upstream central Asia is linked with the summer water vapor flux over NWC, and April predicted zonal wind over the Maritime Continent is related with the large-scale circulation over NWC, while caution must be taken when April predicted SLP over the Mediterranean Sea is used as predictor of NWC PI.
