Abstract:Based upon a travel survey of 1365 individuals from nine selected sub-districts of Hangzhou, this study develops a subdivided Multinomial Logistic Model to explore the underlying influence of land-use characteristics on different communities' travel pattern of Shopping-Mall, utilizing explanatory variables of individual attributes, travel features and land-use characteristics. The results verify that, accessibility enhancement and mixed use of commercial and residential land could impel more walk and bicycle trips to Shopping-Mall; the growing of transit service would boost the probability of non-motorized travels as well, whereas transit density itself wouldn't restrict car trips to Shopping-Mall. These findings manifest that, inhabitants' trip structure of Shopping-Mall will be optimized by implementing the progressive planning idea of urban spatial organization, and it's necessary to synthesize multiple instrumentality of land-use governance, public facility control and traffic environment improvement in different scale of community business circle where residents' activities are concentrated. Moreover, the sample-subdivided simulation approach can be applied to evaluate various effects of land use on different groups more accurately and provide basis for planning-related decisions as well as local growth management. © 2012 ASCE.

Abstract:AbstractMany Chinese cities are becoming more polycentric during the last decade of rapid urban expansion. In this study, we attempt to explore the relationship between travel behaviour and polycentric built environment for both work and non‐work trips by multiple multinomial logit mode choice models for work and non‐work travel. The choice set is comprised of: driving a private car, taking the bus and taking the subway. The empirical analysis in this paper is based on the 2005 Shenzhen Personal Travel Survey. The model specifications tested a set of variables describing trip mode attributes, household socio‐demographics, and polycentric centre types such as regional centres, district centres, district subcentres and suburbs. The results indicate that urban form is an important factor in affecting mode choice: people living or working in a regional city centre are more likely to take public transportation, compared to those living in subcentres and suburbs. The results also imply that people perceive a higher influence of built environment on mode choice for work trips than non‐work trips. These research findings support the contention that different types of urban centres can meaningfully influence how residents travel, even after controlling for socio‐economic characteristics.Resumen. Muchas ciudades chinas han estado haciéndose cada vez más policéntricas durante la rápida expansión de la última década. En este estudio, intentamos explorar la relación entre el comportamiento respecto al transporte urbano y los entornos policéntricos en relación con los desplazamientos por motivos laborales y no laborales, empleando modelos de selección de modo logit multinomial múltiple para desplazamientos laborales y no laborales. El abanico de elección se compone de: utilizar el propio vehículo, tomar el autobús y tomar el metro. El análisis empírico de este artículo se basa en la Encuesta Personal de Transporte en Shenzen de 2005. Las especificaciones del modelo han experimentado con un conjunto de variables que describen atributos del modo de viajar, la socio‐demografía de los hogares, y los diferentes tipos de centros policéntricos, como pueden ser centros regionales, de distrito, subcentros de distrito y suburbios. Los resultados indican que la configuración urbana es un factor importante que afecta el modo de selección: es más probable que las personas que viven o trabajan en un centro de ciudad regional usen el transporte público, en comparación con las que viven en subcentros y en los suburbios. Los resultados implican asimismo que las personas perciben una mayor influencia del entorno urbano al seleccionar el modo de desplazamiento al trabajo en comparación con los desplazamientos no laborales. Analysis of Suburbanites' Travel Behavior Based on Big Data

Abstract:Large-scale communities outside the city are the product of the process of suburbanization. Subject to community facilities, travel of the suburbanites was suppressed. In this paper, taking the large-scale community in Shanghai—Jinhe New Town as an example, two characteristics will be studied: 0.5-hour and 1-hour traffic circle, and crowdedness of subway and taxi for suburbanites. The result reveals: (1) there exists significant differences for taxi traffic circle between the peak and non-peak period; (2) the difference is relatively small for subway because the subway departure times and frequency are relatively fixed; (3) the taxi circle focuses on city periphery, indicating that if suburbanites want to go into the city, they prefer to take the subway; and (4) the subway is very crowded, sometimes even eight person per square meter during the peak period while four person per square meter during the non-peak period.

Abstract:The underutilization of public transit in Shanghai, China, calls for studies to better understand travelers’ mode choice behavior in multimodal networks. This paper presents a comprehensive study of mode choice behavior and differences in the perception of travel time reliability (TTR) and crowding for different modes, particularly in multimodal networks. A two-stage stated preference survey was carried out to consider four commonly used modes, including combined-mode travel with park-and-ride, in conjunction with four key factors. The aim of the first stage was to obtain and quantify travelers’ perceived TTR in relation to different levels of delay for different modes. In the second stage, an experimental design that used the utility balance theory was performed for a stated preference survey to investigate mode choice behavior and differences in perception of TTR and crowding. Results from the first stage survey showed that travelers do have different levels of tolerance regarding the longest accepted delay for different modes. Their perceived TTR in terms of a certain delay differed by mode. The results from the second stage survey provided further evidence of significant perceived differences in TTR and crowding for different modes. Mode-specific perceptions of TTR and crowding have a great impact on travelers’ mode choice behavior and should be considered when forecasting models related to mode share in a multimodal network are being developed. The values of travel time, TTR, and crowding derived from this study could be used in demand forecasting and project appraisals in multimodal networks.

Abstract:As a result of rapid urbanization and motorization in China, numerous mega-cities have emerged, and large numbers of people live and work in the city centers. Consequently, developing a public transport-oriented urban structure and promoting sustainable development are major planning strategies for the country. To understand the impact of rail transit on motorization in a high-density city center, we conduct a household travel survey in three neighborhoods around metro stations in the central area of Shanghai. We examine the car buying and commuting behavior of those Shanghai “original” residents who lived there when the city began growing, engulfing them in the center. Studies have shown that 40 percent of commuters in the city center commute outward, following a virtually reversed commute pattern, and the factors significantly affecting their car purchasing choice include their attitude toward cars and transit, household incomes, ownership of the apartments they live in, and the distance between family members’ workplaces and nearest metro stations. Despite easy access to the metro from their home in the city center, those who purchase their apartment units also likely own a car, while those who rent their apartment units are less likely to own a car; however, these odds are still higher than for those who live in an apartment unit inherited from their relatives or provided by their company. In the city center, if a family owns a car, then that car would almost certainly be used for daily commuting. A multinomial logistic model is applied to examine the factors influencing the tendency for using cars. The results show that people’s choices of commuting by alternative modes rather than cars are also shaped by their attitude toward public transportation, but other factors can also subtly change people’s commuting behavior under certain conditions. The commuting distance discourages people from walking and taking buses (but not metro). As the egress distance to the workplace increases, the metro becomes less appealing than cars. Mixed land use encourages people to walk or take buses instead of driving. Older people prefer riding buses and walking to driving, and female respondents tend to prefer walking, cycling, and riding the metro to driving compared to male respondents. These findings contribute to understanding the behavior of people who are familiar with public transportation and how to encourage them to switch from driving cars to alternative transport modes.

Abstract:A metropolitan area is a new form of urban development under the agglomeration effect and scale economy. The renewal and upgrading of urban spatial structures have brought new pressure to urban commuting. Under the new form of the metropolitan area, the process of regional integration has accelerated, and long-distance extreme commuting has increased. New changes have taken place in the travel structure. This paper constructs a travel behavior selection model for office workers based on the cumulative prospect theory, introduces the value of commuting travel time into the generalized travel cost function, uses the weight function and the improved generalized travel cost function as the basis of the transportation mode selection model, defines the reference point of the generalized travel cost in the model, and selects the prospect with the largest cumulative prospect value as the optimal decision for travelers. Based on the "expected utility maximization theory" and the "cumulative prospect theory," the commuter is simulated under four different travel scenarios to study the optimal traffic mode selection behavior. The results show that under the framework of expected utility theory, the travel mode choice behavior of commuters is not affected by travel scenarios, and the cumulative prospect theory is more suitable for the study of travel mode choice behavior. The construction of a transportation mode selection model with the value of commuting travel time as the core variable can help commuters to choose a reasonable transportation mode and provide a basis for the government and relevant departments to formulate traffic management plans and implement traffic congestion mitigation policies.

Characteristics and Mechanism of High Speed Rail-driven Suburbanization in China:A Case Study of Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Rail

Abstract:The international theoretical and practical studies suggest that the construction of high-speed rail(HSR) usually influences the development of suburban area.In China,the large-scale construction of HSR,together with the rapid urbanization,makes such influence more complex and profound.In the development of HSR new town,the HSR station works as an "amplifier",thus it promotes suburbanization.In the case study of Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Rail,this article takes both quantitative and qualitative approaches to explore suburbanization's patterns in HSR new town: 1) relatively active suburbanization in major cities;2) exorbitant scale and expectation of urban construction;3) rapidly shifted urban forms.From the perspectives of government,market and society,this article uses urban regime theory to analyze the inter-mechanism of HSR-driven suburbanization.In conclusion,selectivity and uncertainty of HSR's suburbanization are proposed.This article also suggests that it is important to coordinate the locations and relationships of the high-speed railway and cities along the lines at a regional level.Furthermore,the development of HSR and urban space in the new towns should be integrated,and the public participation during the planning and development of HSR new towns should be strengthened.Therefore,the goal of sustainable suburban development by HSR can be reached.
Exploring Influencing Factors of Intercity Mode Choice from View of Entire Travel Chain

Abstract:Exploring the influencing factors of intercity travel mode choice can reveal passengers’ travel decision mechanisms and help traffic departments to develop an effective demand management policy. To investigate these factors, a survey was conducted in Xi’an, China, to collect data about passengers’ travel chains, including airplane, high-speed railway (HSR), train, and express bus. A Bayesian mixed multinomial logit model is developed to identify significant factors and explicate unobserved heterogeneity across observations. The effect of significant factors on intercity travel mode choice is quantitatively assessed by the odds ratio (OR) technique. The results show that the Bayesian mixed multinomial logit model outperforms the traditional Bayesian multinomial logit model, indicating that accommodating the unobserved heterogeneity across observations can improve the model fit. The model estimation results show that ticket purchasing method, comfort, punctuality, and access time are random parameters that have heterogeneous effects on intercity travel mode choice.

Abstract:Most previous studies explored the route choice behavior of metro passengers using stated preference (SP) survey data, but the SP data are inevitably subject to endogenous and selection bias. In contrast, automated fare collection (AFC) data record travel information for nearly all passengers at boarding and alighting stations. However, due to the seamless transfer in urban rail transit, it becomes challenging to track the actual routes of passengers accurately using AFC data. Fortunately, based on a data-driven method, the chosen route and detailed travel information (e.g., segmented travel time, train load status) can be inferred with AFC data. To fill the research gaps, this paper delves into the route choice mechanism by considering the effect of detailed route information, taking Nanjing Metro, China as a case study. A Conditional Multinomial Logit model is employed to examine the effect of determinants on route choice behavior for metro passengers. The results show that the route choice model considering dynamic segmented travel time and train load status has better fit performance than the benchmark models. The sensitivity of the walking time is found to be similar to that of in-vehicle time for metro passengers, but a stronger distaste for waiting time or queuing time is observed. Besides, the crowding-related attributes are negative for route choice, but Nanjing Metro passengers present a higher tolerance for crowding compared with passengers in developed countries. These findings provide an accurate and comprehensive insight into the route choice behavior of metro passengers.

Abstract:Unraveling the complex relationships between intercity travel mode choices and their determinants is valuable for transport planning and development. However, a better understanding of the key influential factors shaping passengers' comprehensive mode choices for intercity travel, as well as the interactive and nonlinear effect between these two, is still needed. By conducting field surveys in Xi'an, China, a tourist city, this study collected intercity travel mode data for airplanes, high-speed railway (HSR), traditional trains, and express buses, as well as a comprehensive spectrum of passengers' attribute factors, including relatively underexplored factors such as online ticketing methods. The XGBoost algorithm and SHAP analysis were applied to conduct an in-depth and interpretable effect diagnosis. The results reveal obvious interactions among passengers' socioeconomic and travel behavior attributes. Among them, we find that online ticketing methods play an indispensable role in different population groups. Additionally, travel distance has the most significant nonlinear effects on intercity multimodal choices; this demonstrates a highly heterogeneous influential effect and a higher sensitivity than for intra-city travels. This study provides new evidence to better understand intercity travel behaviors and provides policymakers with targeted strategies for regional and national intercity transport planning and management.
Analysis of an optimal public transport structure under a carbon emission constraint: a case study in Shanghai, China

Abstract:Along with the rapid development of the transportation industry, the problems of the energy crisis and transport emissions have become increasingly serious. The success of traffic emission reduction is related to the realization of global low-carbon goals. Placing priority on public transport is the internationally recognized traffic development model. This paper takes Shanghai, China, as an example to examine the optimal public transport structure. Five factors were selected from personal and public perspectives, including travel costs, crowding degree, occupied area, traffic emissions, and operating subsidies. The objective functions of these factors were transformed into satisfaction functions, and a multi-objective programming model was used to solve for the optimal proportions of the ground bus and rail transit, and the carbon emission reduction potential was analyzed in different scenarios. The study showed that the actual proportion of rail transit in Shanghai was slightly lower than the optimal value, and accompanied by low satisfaction with each factor relative to the optimal value. It was difficult to achieve the traffic emission reduction targets by only reducing satisfaction with other factors except carbon emissions assuming a fixed proportion of public transport. As the proportion of total travel represented by public transport increased, rail transit became the main mode of public transport and the usage trend was more obvious, but the structure of public transport gradually reached a relatively stable state after a certain level of development. Compared to reducing carbon emissions by changing satisfaction with other factors, it was easier to achieve traffic emission reduction targets by increasing the proportion of public transport. To increase the proportion of public transport travel and achieve the goal of traffic reduction in the future, further improvements are needed in the quality of public transport system services, public transport priority development must be differentiated, and the profitability of the public transport industry itself must be enhanced.
Assessing Intercity Multimodal Choice Behavior in a Touristy City: A Factor Analysis

Abstract:This paper investigates influential factors in passengers' intercity multimodal choice behaviors in a touristy city. By collecting large individual-level data through a comprehensive field survey that was carried out at the major transportation hubs in Xi'an, China, we studied four travel modes of the surveyed travelers in this touristy city, including air, high-speed rail, traditional passenger train, and express bus. For factor analysis, 12 variables, including not only individual-related attributes but also ticketing methods and mental perceptions, were used as the independent factors after the correlation analysis and collinearity test. The regression relationships between the travel mode choice and the independent variables were studied using Bayesian multinomial logistic regression. The results indicate that those 12 factors have significant and various influences on passengers' mode choices. In particular, travel distance, fare rate, intercity travel time per hundred kilometers, quality of service, accessibility of transportation hubs, and ticketing methods have influential contributions for explaining the choice decision-makings. The findings demystify the effects of several unexplored factors in intercity multimodal travel choice behaviors and shed new light on formulating traffic management strategies for service providers and decision-makers in practice.
A study on commuters' public transportation mode choice behavior in river valley-type cities considering terrain spatial perception: evidence from Lanzhou, China

Abstract:Existing research rarely examines the subjective and objective built environment of river valley-type cities in relation to travel mode choice, particularly overlooking the heterogeneity among travelers in these cities. In this paper, based on questionnaire survey data and built environment data, terrain spatial perception (TSP) is introduced to expand the theory of planned behavior (TPB), and a Structural Equation Model (SEM) is established. Factor analysis and path analysis are conducted using SPSS and AMOS to estimate latent variables. An integrated model of SEM and random parameter Logit model (RPLM), which can not only analyze the psychological perception factors of commuters in river valley-type cities but also consider the heterogeneity of psychological perception, was constructed to analyze the impact of personal attributes, objective built environment factors, and psychological latent variables on the commuting mode choice behavior of public transport users in river valley-type cities. The results indicate that the five observation indicators corresponding to the proposed terrain spatial perception latent variables can better explain the terrain spatial perception of commuters in river valley-type cities. Different from plain cities, the subjective and objective built environment of river valley-type cities notably influence the travel behavior of commuters. Moreover, the parameters of terrain spatial perception follow a normal distribution, indicating that the sensitivity of different commuters to the terrain spatial perception of river valley-type cities is heterogeneous. The results of our study can provide a reference for alleviating traffic issues in valley cities.

Abstract:Like many other transit modes, the metro provides stop-to-stop services rather than door-to-door services, so its use undeniably involves first- and last-mile issues. Understanding the determinants of the first- and last-mile mode choice is essential. Existing literature, however, mostly overlooks the mode choice effects of traffic safety perception and attitudes toward the mode. To this end, based on a face-to-face questionnaire survey in Shenzhen, China, this study uses the two-sample t-test to confirm the systematic differences in traffic safety perception and attitudes between different subgroups and develops a series of multinomial logistic (MNL) models to identify the determinants of first- and last-mile mode choice for metro commuters. The results of this study show that: (1) Walking is the most frequently used travel mode, followed by dockless bike-sharing (DBS) and buses; (2) Variances in traffic safety perception and attitude exist across gender and location; (3) Vehicle-related crash risks discourage metro commuters from walking to/from the metro station but encourage them to use DBS and buses as feeder modes; (4) DBS–metro integration is encouraged by the attitude that DBS is quicker than buses and walking, and positive attitudes toward the bus and DBS availability are decisive for the bus–metro and DBS–metro integration, respectively; and (5) Substantial differences exist in the mode choice effects of traffic safety perception and attitudes for access and egress trips. This study provides a valuable reference for metro commuters’ first- and last-mile travel mode choice, contributing to developing a sustainable urban transport system.

Abstract:In the process of suburbanization of large growing cities, transit passengers have an undeniable role to play in terms of local traffic, car use, and petrol consumption. It is widely believed that transit-oriented development (metro station) could encourage people to live and consume near transit station areas through walking and cycling rather than travelling by car. However, opinions on this are still mixed. In addition, the existing literature is dominated by analyses of residents, while analyses of passengers remain scarce. This paper fills this gap by looking at metro station areas in Beijing. Using survey data, the study found mixed land use attracts passengers to shop more within metro station areas than in other places. More non-residential land developments attract more patrons to dine and access entertainment within metro station areas. Surprisingly, land use in the metro station areas was unrelated to passengers' choice to live within metro station areas, while housing prices and income had significant effects. Personal preferences for travel mode have an effect, and those who dislike travel tend to shop and seek entertainment locally. This study suggests that land-use planning in metro station areas could be helpful in shaping more sustainable mobility in the process of suburbanization of Chinas growing cities.

Abstract:The existing literature on urban transportation planning in China focuses primarily on large cities and neglects small cities. This paper aims to fill part of the knowledge gap by examining travel mode choice in Changting, a small city that has been experiencing fast spatial expansion and growing transportation problems. Using survey data collected from 1470 respondents on weekdays and weekends, the study investigates the relationship between mode choice and individuals' socio-economic characteristics, trip characteristics, attitudes, and home and workplace built environments. While more than 35 percent of survey respondents are car owners, walk, bicycle, e-bike, and motorcycle still account for over 85 percent of trips made during peak hours. E-bike and motorcycle are the dominant means of travel on weekdays, but many people shift to walking and cycling on weekends, making non-motorized and semi-motorized travel especially important for non-commuting trips. Results of multinomial logistic regression show that: (1) job-housing balance might exert different effects on mode choice in different types of urban areas; (2) negative attitude towards e-bike and motorcycle is associated with more walking and cycling; and (3) land use diversity of workplace is related to commuting mode choice on weekdays, while land use diversities of both residential and activity places do not significantly affect mode choice on weekends. Our findings imply that planning and design for small cities needs to differentiate land use and transportation strategies in various types of areas, and to launch outreach programs to shift people's mode choice from motorized travel to walking and cycling.

Abstract:This paper aims to conduct an empirical study to evaluate the influence of built environment features and socioeconomic factors on commuters’ simultaneous choice of departure time and travel mode. Using Kunming, China, as the study region, the 2015 Regional Household Travel Survey and 2016 Point of Interest data are used in the analysis. The results show that, in addition to socioeconomic factors, built environment, such as the density of residential building, employment, and service facility are correlated with joint choice behavior. Moreover, there exist differences regarding the influence of built environment and socioeconomic factors on departure time and travel mode choice. The dissimilarity parameters show that commuters prefer to shift travel mode than departure time generally when travel condition alters. In order to examine the policy measures’ potential performance, the paper conducts simulation tests based on the Monte Carlo method. The simulation results show that congestion pricing of car travel during peak hours can reduce the number of commuting trips, and reducing travel time of public transit would be a better strategy to attract more passengers during peak hours. Moreover, reasonable land use planning, such as building more bus stops around commuters’ home location, would be a long term and fundamental approach to reduce mobile-source emissions and attract more public transit passengers.

Abstract:The electric bicycle is considered as an environmentally friendly mode, the market share of which is growing fast worldwide. Even in metropolitan areas which have a well-developed public transportation system, the usage of electric bicycles continues to grow. Compared with bicycles, the power transferred from the battery enables users to ride faster and have long-distance trips. However, research on electric bicycle travel behavior is inadequate. This paper proposes a cumulative prospect theory (CPT) framework to describe electric bicycle users’ mode choice behavior. Different from the long-standing use of utility theory, CPT considers travelers’ inconsistent risk attitudes. Six socioeconomic characteristics are chosen to discriminate conservative and adventurous electric bicycle users. Then, a CPT model is established which includes two parts: travel time and travel cost. We calculate the comprehensive cumulative prospect value (CPV) for four transportation modes (electric bicycle, bus, subway and private car) to predict electric bicycle users’ mode choice preference under different travel distance ranges. The model is further validated via survey data.

Abstract:Rapid urbanization and motorization have generated increasing social and environmental challenges to the urban transport sector in China, such as traffic congestion, car accidents, air pollution, and global warming. Prioritizing the development of urban public transport system has been adopted as a primary strategy by Chinese government. However, the problems caused by large numbers of private cars are still far from being solved, and the ridership of public transport in China is relatively low. Therefore, the current study proposes a new comprehensive framework by enhancing the norm activation model (NAM) and theory of planned behavior (TPB) with the perceived accessibility to public transport, to better understand the determinants for predicting citizens’ choice of public transport as a sustainable travel mode. An online survey concerning travel mode change was conducted among citizens in Hangzhou, China. Based on 341 valid samples, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed to verify the proposed framework. The analytical results confirm that awareness of consequences and subjective norms are the two key constructs for connecting the two theories as a whole. Further, the examination of intention-behavior relationship shows that perceived accessibility to public transport could strengthen the relationship between behavioral intention and actual behavior in using public transport. The findings not only contribute to the development of pro-environmental theories, but also have meaningful implications for governments to develop relevant policies to encourage citizens to use public transport as a sustainable travel mode.

Abstract:With the continuous improvement of the operation line network of urban rail transit, analyzing influencing factors of transfer passenger flow of urban rail transit is critical to improve the transfer demand analysis of urban rail transit. Using data collected from questionnaires, transfer passenger flow surveys and smart cards, this study proposes an approach base on nested logit passenger flow assignment model considering transfer choice behaviours of passengers. The transfer passenger flow at seven transfer stations in Nanjing is obtained. Subsequently, this study investigates the potential influencing factors of transfer passenger flow, including the node degree, geographic location (located in the city center, urban fringe, suburbs or suburban fringe), economic location (distance from the city center) and transportation locations (if it is close to a transportation hub or in combination with the hub) of rail transit transfer stations. The results indicate that a positive correlation between the transfer passenger flow and the node degrees of transfer stations. However, the relationship between transfer passenger flow and the economic, geographic, and transportation locations of transfer stations is not clear. The finding have reference value for the network design of rail transit transfer stations and transfer facilities, and provide reference for the analysis of passenger flow under network operation.
