Abstract:Early career teacher attrition has most often been conceptualized as either a problem associated with individual factors (e.g. burnout) or a problem associated with contextual factors (e.g. support and salary). This study considered early career teacher attrition as an identity making process that involves a complex negotiation between individual and contextual factors. Forty second- and third-year teachers in rural, urban, and suburban boards across Alberta, Canada, who taught at different grade levels, were interviewed about their experiences with attention to their future intentions. The semi-structured interviews were analyzed in two ways: simple descriptive statistics on demographic data and thematic analysis of the interviews. The seven themes, developed inductively, were: (1) support; (2) an identity thread of belonging; (3) tensions around contracts; (4) new teachers will do anything; (5) balancing composing a life: Working hours; (6) the struggle to not allow teaching to consume them; and (7) can I keep doing this? Is this teaching? The results of the study prompted questions about how beginning teachers might be sustained by considering each person’s storied life, as well as about how teachers might be sustained on both their personal and professional knowledge landscapes.

Abstract:Detrimental circumstances (e.g., poverty, homelessness) may affect parents, parenting, and children. These circumstances may lead to children being labeled "at risk" for school failure. To ameliorate this risk, more school and school earlier (e.g., Head Start) is offered. To improve child outcomes, Head Start teachers are expected to bolster children?s academic readiness in a manner that is beneficially warm, circulating warmth in their classrooms to sustain positive teacher-child relationships and the positive climate of the classroom. The Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS; Pianta et al., 2008) is one tool by which these domains of warmth are assessed. There are, however, significant personal and professional stressors with which Head Start teachers contend which the CLASS (Pianta et al., 2008) does not consider in its scoring methods. Uplifting the voices of six Head Start teachers, the present study implemented individual and focus group interviews during the summer and fall months of 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, asking (a) What were the stories, histories, and lived experiences of these Head Start teachers with regard to stress and warmth in a time of crisis? and (b) How did these teachers understand and approach the CLASS (Pianta et al., 2008) and its measures of their warmth? Data demonstrated Head Start teachers engaged in a type of performativity to 1) mask their stress, potentially worsening their levels of stress in order to maintain warmth for their students' sake, and 2) outwit the prescribed CLASS (Pianta et al., 2008) observations. Implications and insights are discussed.

[So-called benign metastasizing leiomyoma of the lung presenting with bone metastases].

Abstract:The patient, a 42-year-old woman, was admitted to our hospital because of abnormal shadows on chest X-ray films obtained during a routine medical check-up. Her medical history included a uterine myomectomy at the age of 21, and thereafter, periodic lumbago and back pain for which she had not sought any medical treatment. Chest computed tomography detected a number of pulmonary nodules in both whole lung fields, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed many spherical metastatic lesions in the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. Although we initially suspected lung cancer, no primary lesion was found. A thoracoscopic lung biopsy revealed leiomyomatous tumors that were histologically similar to the uterine myoma removed 21 years previously. The final diagnosis was so-called benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML). Because the removed tumor contained a high concentration of progesterone receptors (240 fmol/mg), a gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue was administered, and proved effective in relieving the patient's periodic lumbago and back pain. The findings in this case suggested that the so-called BML was in fact a metastasis of a low-grade uterine leiomyosarcoma.
Stress Intensity and Exhaustion Among Infant and Toddler Teachers: Descriptive Analysis and Associations with Sources of Stress and Coping Strategy Use

Abstract:This study described infant/toddler teachers' (N = 106) perceptions of stress intensity and exhaustion (emotional, physical, mental) intensity. We examined the associations between stress and exhaustion and teachers' reports of stress sources and coping strategy use. Using ecological momentary assessment (EMA), teachers from Early Head Start (EHS), EHS childcare-partnerships, or independent childcare programs (midwestern U.S.) completed twice-weekly reports of: stress and exhaustion intensity; stress sources (workload, children's behaviors, personal life); and, coping strategies (support from colleagues, distraction, mindfulness techniques, reframing). Research findings: Stress and exhaustion reports were similar to studies of preschool teachers. Workload and personal life stressors were associated with stress and all exhaustion types. Teachers used fewer than two different coping strategies/per reporting day. Only reframing was negatively associated with stress and emotional exhaustion. Teachers reported greater stress at end-of-week than beginning-of-week. Older teachers reported greater stress and emotional exhaustion. Although one-third of teachers reported ≥4 ACEs, early adversity was not associated with stress or exhaustion. Practice or policy: We discuss the results relative to the sparse literature on infant/toddler teachers' well-being and suggest areas for professional development supports while underscoring the need for EHS federal policy makers and program administrators to consider how to reduce/streamline workload.
Early Childhood Teachers’ Psychological Well-Being: Exploring Potential Predictors of Depression, Stress, and Emotional Exhaustion

Abstract:Research Findings: Early childhood teachers’ psychological well-being influences the nurturing and learning classroom climate in early care and education as well as children’s development. However, less is known about predictors of teachers’ psychological well-being in preschool. The purpose of this study was to explore associations between potential predictors of teachers’ psychological well-being—such as professional background, teaching efficacy, and work environment—and teachers’ self-perceived depression, stress, and emotional exhaustion after controlling for individual demographics. A total of 1,129 teachers serving preschool-age children (3- and 4-year-olds) in the United States participated in the study. Teachers responded to a questionnaire asking about their background, work environment, and social-emotional attributes. Multiple regression analysis revealed that levels of teachers’ self-efficacy and work environments are generally associated with their psychological well-being above and beyond their personal and professional backgrounds. Practice or Policy: The results of this study suggest that it is important to help teachers build teaching competence and efficacy and to prepare them to handle stressors from work environments in order to reduce their psychological burden. In addition, we suggest that positive work climates need to be created for teachers and children at the program level.

To Stay or to Leave: Factors Shaping Early Childhood Teachers’ Turnover and Retention Decisions

Abstract:This qualitative study sought to understand whether there were difference in how early childhood education (ECE) teachers who stayed in or left their jobs interpreted their job demands and resources. It also sought to understand factors that shaped teachers' turnover and retention decisions. Twenty-six teachers who worked in subsidized ECE programs that blended multiple public funding sources were interviewed, 14 of whom stayed in their jobs and 12 of whom left their jobs. We found teachers' reasons for leaving or staying were complex and took into consideration workplace and family factors. Teachers who stayed tended to share the same job frustrations as those who left, namely a misalignment between job demands and resources, but those who stayed were more willing to engage creatively in solving workplace problems. Teachers who stayed placed greater value on professional development opportunities than teachers who left, and these key job rewards factored into retention decisions. Teachers who left often felt that lacking key job resources undermined their sense of competence at being an effective teacher and viewed the psychosocial workplace climate less favorably than teachers who stayed. For many teachers, the value they placed on different job rewards was influenced by family factors.
When Fulfillment is Not Enough: Early Childhood Teacher Occupational Burnout and Turnover Intentions from a Job Demands and Resources Perspective

Abstract:This study examined the job demands and job resources of a sample of 273 early childhood teachers in Colorado. The study explored the relationships among their job demands and resources, occupational burnout, and turnover intentions using a two-level mediated model. Study findings suggest that teachers' emotional exhaustion and depersonalization from the work is a function of lack of job control, lack of collegial relationships within the program, and children's behaviors that they perceived to be challenging. However, teachers also reported being more fulfilled with their work when they worked in programs in which there was a shared vision and that allowed for greater job control. Additionally, teachers who earned lower wages, held a postsecondary degree, reported greater emotional exhaustion, and who expressed less of a shared vision with their organization were more likely to indicate intentions to leave their job. Higher levels of collegiality were indirectly related to lower turnover intentions via lower levels of emotional exhaustion among teachers. Policy or Practice: Study findings can be used to inform leadership development, teacher professional development, and workforce compensation policy to foster greater organizational health, to improve teacher well-being, and to promote teacher retention.

Early Childhood Teachers of Color in New York City: heightened stress, lower quality of life, declining health, and compromised sleep amidst COVID-19

Abstract:Stress and well-being are known to influence the quality of teacher-student interactions, teachers' delivery of emotional and instructional support, and the social competence and executive function skills of young learners-dynamics that impact the education and development of young children. Even prior to COVID-19, 46% of teachers reported notably high levels of daily stress. Given the additional stressors associated with the pandemic, this multi-methods study explores the well-being of Latinx, Black, and multiracial early childhood teachers in New York City, where communities of Color have been particularly hard hit by COVID-19. Via an amalgamation of descriptive and interpretive approaches-a survey, time-use diaries, and qualitative interviews-this study documents early childhood teachers' experiences making sense of and negotiating the impacts of intersecting stressors on their stress, health, quality of life, and sleep amidst COVID-19. Survey findings show reduced well-being across measures among the early childhood teachers in the sample, while qualitative findings illustrate the many layers of challenges that teachers of Color faced during the pandemic. Time-use diaries show extremely high demands and long work hours associated with concerning lack of self-care and attention to mental health. Interviews elucidate how stress is layered across environmental, occupational, and racial factors. This study points to the need to attend to the well-being of Black, Latinx, and multiracial early childhood teachers in urban settings during and after COVID-19 recovery.

Abstract:The majority of teachers in the early care and education (ECE) workforce face disparities in physical and psychological well-being as well as working conditions. This study examined the working conditions and physical, psychological, and professional well-being of early childhood teachers and compared the results by the child age group they care for and by teachers' level of educational attainment. Two hundred sixty-two early childhood teachers completed a brief health assessment and a questionnaire on demographic information, well-being, and working conditions. A subsample of 40 teachers were observed for the quality of care they provided to the children. A substantial number of the teachers in the study reported physical and psychological challenges and suboptimal working conditions for well-being, a largely neglected workforce issue, for this working population. Several significant differences in teachers' well-being and working conditions were found by the child age group for which they care and by teachers' level of educational attainment. In particular, teachers with higher educational levels had greater resources for work and provided higher quality of care, however, they also reported poorer physical and professional well-being than teachers with less education. Overall findings indicate a need for policies and programs that will improve working conditions and health outcomes for early childhood teachers and the children in their care. These findings suggest that ECE teachers may have unique needs across the age groups with whom they work and teacher educational levels, regarding work-related resources and conditions.

Abstract:RESEARCH FINDINGS: The current article explores the relationship between teachers' perceptions of child behavior problems and preschool teacher job stress, as well as the possibility that teachers' executive functions moderate this relationship. Data came from 69 preschool teachers in 31 early childhood classrooms in 4 Head Start centers and were collected using Web-based surveys and Web-based direct assessment tasks. Multilevel models revealed that higher levels of teachers' perceptions of child behavior problems were associated with higher levels of teacher job stress and that higher teacher executive function skills were related to lower job stress. However, findings did not yield evidence for teacher executive functions as a statistical moderator.PRACTICE OR POLICY: Many early childhood teachers do not receive sufficient training for handling children's challenging behaviors. Child behavior problems increase a teacher's workload and consequently may contribute to feelings of stress. However, teachers' executive function abilities may enable them to use effective, cognitive-based behavior management and instructional strategies during interactions with students, which may reduce stress. Providing teachers with training on managing challenging behaviors and enhancing executive functions may reduce their stress and facilitate their use of effective classroom practices, which is important for children's school readiness skills and teachers' health.

Abstract:Teacher stress takes a measurable toll the teaching workforce, as many teachers become burned out and decide to leave the profession. Christopher McCarthy explains that stress is a psychological process that results from how teachers appraise the balance between the demands in their classrooms and the resources they have to meet those demands. Understanding this imbalance may provide avenues for intervention for those 20-25% of teachers most vulnerable to stress. Such interventions include upstream structural efforts to calibrate demands across the school to better suit each teacher’s capacity and more targeted interventions aimed at teachers who are most at risk of stress.

An Ecological Exploration into the Agency of Four Former Early Childhood Teachers

Abstract:Issues of Early Childhood Teacher (ECT) shortages, recruitment, and retention are of concern in many nations, with ECT attrition being a contributing factor. Simultaneously, scholars argue that neoliberal influences are restricting the agency of ECTs. This article explores the relationship between ECT attrition and agency by re-examining narratives shared by four individuals who chose to leave early childhood teaching in Victoria, Australia. Through an analytical framework grounded in ecological systems, I delve into how agency was experienced in relation to the incidents that led participants to leave the profession at the individual, micro-, meso-, exo-, macro-, and chrono-systems. The findings suggest that upon entering the profession, participants had anticipated and found the need to advocate for their professional aspirations. Notably, their relationships with colleagues, particularly management and leadership, either afforded or constrained their agency. Other system factors influencing their agency, and reasons for leaving the profession, include the everyday busyness of teaching, educator-child ratios, and working conditions as defined by their employment entitlements. I argue that early childhood managers and leaders act as agency gatekeepers and concur with scholars who suggest a need to reimagine early childhood education and care as a public good, and to reconsider current hierarchical structures. This article aims to initiate further research concerned with the agency of ECTs and how they are or can be supported to not only remain but thrive within in the profession.

Abstract:Teachers, a population already vulnerable to high stress, experienced heightened demands, and reduced resources during the COVID‐19 pandemic. This longitudinal study utilized inductive thematic analysis to explore 241 K‐12 teachers' qualitative accounts of stressors, supports, and pandemic‐specific impacts through their responses to three open‐ended questions. Responses were collected across 5 months. Three domains emerged: demands (e.g., navigating hybrid learning), resources (e.g., helpful teaching teams), and pandemic‐related outcomes (e.g., burnout), along with 12 themes. Demands were the most frequently endorsed domain across the months, speaking to the diverse challenges teachers encountered during this stressful time. Resources were less frequently mentioned, yet signaled opportunities for intervention. Results suggest important implications for how teachers experienced pandemic teaching, such as lasting impacts on well‐being, and suggestions to improve future stress and crisis response.

Abstract:Almost half of all teachers in the United States report high levels of daily stress from teaching, making it one of the most stressful jobs in the country. Teacher stress is detrimental to one’s health and well-being, leading to poor academic outcomes for students and a hostile classroom environment, both barriers for young minds to learn. The COVID-19 pandemic and fear of personal health have exacerbated teacher stress levels. Individual factors that contribute to stress, such as being tired or making quick judgments, are linked to the tendency to rely on automatic cognitive processes (e.g., unintentional biases) rather than more controlled processes; these factors lead to discriminatory acts toward minoritized students. In the Vulnerable Decision Point model, the root causes of minoritized students' experiences of discriminatory acts of disproportionate discipline in schools are explained by the impact of stress on teachers’ automatic processing and unintentional racial bias (URB). Current research for teacher stress includes ways to identify and reduce stress but have only achieved moderate effect sizes driving the need to identify additional strategies for addressing teacher stress, such as teacher subjective well-being (SWB). SWB skills can include mindfulness, resiliency, and self-efficacy, thus providing opportunities to mitigate the effects of daily stressors on unintentional biases by being conscious of fast decision-making and escalation of unexpected behaviors. The data includes self-reports from middle school teachers who completed baseline demographic questionnaires and various scales prior to randomization and intervention implementation. This study aims to understand how preexisting conditions of teacher perceived stress and teacher SWB have perpetuated unintentional biases toward Black students and may have changed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Heartwatch: a secondary prevention programme in primary care in Ireland

Abstract:Background Heartwatch, a secondary prevention programme in primary care was initiated in 2003, based on the second European Joint Task Force recommendations for secondary prevention of coronary heart disease (CHD). The aim was to examine the effect of the first 2 years of the Heartwatch programme on cardiovascular risk factors and treatments. Design Prospective cohort study of patients with established CHD enrolled into the Heartwatch programme. Methods Four hundred and seventy (20%) general practitioners nationwide participated in the programme, recruiting 11542 patients with established CHD (earlier myocardial infarction, coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass surgery). Clinical data were electronically transferred by each general practitioner to a central database. Comparison of changes in risk factors and treatments at 1-year and 2-year follow-up from baseline were made using paired t-test for continuous and McNemar's test for categorical data. Results Statistically significant changes in systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, total and low-density lipoprotien cholesterol and smoking status at 1 and 2 years (P < 0.0001) were observed. Little or no improvements were shown for exercise, BMI or waist circumference. Increases in the prescribing of statins, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and β-blockers over the course of the study were observed. Conclusion The Heartwatch programme has demonstrated significant improvements in the main risk factors and treatments for CHD. More effective interventions are required to reduce BMI, waist circumference and physical inactivity in this population. Early Childhood Special Education Teachers’ Job Burnout and Psychological Stress

Abstract:Research Findings: All teachers have demanding jobs and work with limited resources. However, working with young children with disabilities may place additional demands on early childhood special education (ECSE) teachers which may impact their well-being. Using the Job Demands and Resources model, the present study aimed to predict ECSE teachers' job burnout and psychological stress by using their job demands, job resources, and professional internal resources. An online survey was collected from 121 ECSE teachers from a large urban school district in a Western state of the United States. The results showed that job demands (work-related stressors) were positively associated with teachers' job burnout and psychological stress. Job resources (sense of school community) were negatively associated with their job burnout and psychological stress. Teachers' job commitment was negatively associated with job burnout. Though their other internal resources (beliefs about developmentally appropriate practices and teaching-efficacy) were not related to their job burnout and psychological stress, their beliefs about social emotional learning were positively related to job burnout. Practice or Policy: These findings offer implications for research and practice regarding the importance of improving ECSE teachers' well-being and working conditions.

Engagement with reservation-based Head Start teachers to explore their stress and coping: A qualitative study

Abstract:Background: Native Americans residing in remote reservation communities find strength in connection to place, culture, language, and sovereignty; they also face challenges as their communities struggle with historical and contemporary traumas that have resulted in poverty, high crime and suicide rates and drug misuse. The psychological well-being of Head Start teachers who teach and support the needs of Native American children, is overlooked. Methods: Qualitative interviews (n = 18) and focus groups (n = 9) were conducted with Head Start teachers, supervisors, parents, and ancillary staff to identify risk and protective factors at each level of the socioecological model (individual, relationships, community, society). Using content analysis and F4 analyse software two coders identified recurring themes. Results: Individually teachers are resilient, focused more on the children's well-being than their own. Family was both significant support and stressor. Community struggles with drug and alcohol misuse and homelessness were the most frequent stressors. Workplace support included their supervisors and the mentorship they provided each other. Spirituality in the form traditional cultural practices, prayer and Christen faith were important sources of support and well-being. Conclusions: This paper provides insight into the stress and coping mechanisms of reservation-based Head Start teachers, identifying ways to protect and promote their health and well-being. It is important to provide support at all levels of the socioecological model to enable these teachers to strengthen their physical and psychological health and wellbeing so that they may support the children and families of Head Start to help strengthen Native American health overall.
Teachers' dissatisfaction during the COVID-19 pandemic: Factors contributing to a desire to leave the profession

Abstract:Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic required more responsibilities from teachers, including implementing prevention strategies, changes in school policies, and managing their own mental health, which yielded higher dissatisfaction in the field. Methods: A cross-sectional web survey was conducted among educators to collect information on their experiences teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic throughout the 2020-2021 academic year. Qualtrics, an online survey platform, fielded the survey from May 6 to June 8, 2021 to a national, convenience sample of 1,807 respondents. Results: Findings revealed that overall, 43% of K-12 teachers reported a greater intention to leave the profession than previously recalled prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Intention to leave was multi-level, and associated with socio-demographic factors (e.g., age: AOR = 1.87, p < 0.05), individual factors (e.g., perceived COVID risks: AOR = 1.44, p < 0.05), and teachers' agency (e.g., dissatisfaction with school/district communications and decisions: AOR = 1.34, p < 0.05). We also found demographic disparities with respect to race and gender (e.g., female teachers: AOR: 1.78, p < 0.05) around teachers' ability to provide feedback to schools on opening/closing and overall dissatisfaction with school/district COVID-19 prevention strategies implementation and policies. Conclusion: These findings are consistent with the Job-Demand and Resources Model (JD-R), which posits that lack of organizational support can exacerbate job stressors, leading to burnout. Specifically, dissatisfaction with the way school policies were implemented took a toll on teachers' mental health, leading to a desire to leave the profession. These findings are also consistent with research conducted once in-person teaching resumed in 2020-2021, specifically that the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated preexisting teacher shortages that led to self-reported issues of stress, burnout, and retention. Implications: Further research is necessary to understand the resources that may be most useful to reduce the demands of teaching in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some teachers are more likely to leave the field, and educational agencies may wish to target their teacher-retention efforts with emphasis on strong employee wellness programs that help educators to manage and reduce their stress. Education agency staff may wish to review policies and practices to provide meaningful opportunities to give input to school/district decisions and enable proactive communication channels.
A Qualitative Study of Maternal Perceptions of Stress and Parenting During Early Childhood

Abstract:Objective Exposure to maternal stress in early childhood can increase risk for learning and behavior challenges. We sought to gain in-depth understanding of how mothers perceive stressors to impact child wellbeing and identify mothers' strategies for navigating stressors with their young children. Methods We recruited English- and Spanish-speaking mothers from a primary care clinic serving predominantly publicly insured children. Twenty-one mothers (aged >18 years) of children (aged 6-29 months) participated in in-depth, semi-structured interviews to discuss their experiences and beliefs regarding stress and parenting. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using the constant comparative method associated with a grounded theory approach. Results We developed the following hypothesized explanatory model based on our key thematic findings: Mothers described a dyadic model of stress, whereby both their children's and their own experiences of and responses to stressors are interdependent. Mothers use preventive and responsive buffering to mitigate the impact of stress on their children; however, their access to resources, including social and financial support, shapes their capacity for implementing such strategies. Affection and other forms of relational support may function to protect against the negative impacts of stress. Conclusion In the setting of poverty-related chronic stressors, mothers play an active role in mitigating the impact of stress on their children's wellbeing through responsive caregiving. Policies aimed at reducing poverty-related stress exposures and experiences among low-income families may be key interventions for promoting responsive caregiving during a critical time in child development. What's New This study uses qualitative research to examine pathways by which maternal stress impacts parenting during early childhood. Mothers described poverty-related stressors and their own frequent adaptations to mitigate stress for their children through reciprocal, dyadic exchanges.

Abstract:Although teacher–child interaction has been recognized as an important indicator of quality in early care and education as well as a crucial predictor of children's development, limited studies have explored the pathways of teachers' job-related stress to interaction with young children. This study aimed to investigate the sequential mediating roles of the personal resources of mindfulness and resilience in the association between perceived job-related stress and teacher–child interaction among early childhood educators in Korea. Three-hundred and seven early childhood educators completed self-reported questionnaires measuring their perspectives regarding job-related stress and teacher–child interaction as well as mindfulness and resilience. The results revealed that job-related stress predicted low levels of teacher–child interaction after controlling for early childhood educators' demographic characteristics and the partial mediation roles of mindfulness and resilience on the association. These findings highlight that greater attention to early childhood educators' job-related stress and well-being is needed to enhance the quality of early childhood education and care. The findings also suggest the benefits of preventive intervention programs for early childhood educators targeting mindfulness and resilience.
