Abstract:High pressure and high temperature properties of AB (A = Li-6, Li-7; B = H, D, T) are comprehensively investigated with first-principles methods. It is found that H-sublattice features in the low-pressure electronic structure near the Fermi level of LiH are shifted to that dominated by the Li+ sublattice under compression. The lattice dynamics are studied in quasi-harmonic approximation, from which the phonon contribution to the free energy and the isotopic effects are accurately modelled with the aid of a parameterized double-Debye model. The equation of state (EOS) obtained matches perfectly with available static experimental data. The calculated principal Hugoniot is also in accordance with that derived from shock wave experiments. Using the calculated principal Hugoniot and the previous theoretical melting curve, we predict a shock melting point at 56 GPa and 1923 K. In order to establish the phase diagram for LiH, the phase boundaries between the B1 and B2 solid phases are explored. The B1-B2-liquid triple point is determined at about 241 GPa and 2413 K. The remarkable shift in the phase boundaries with isotopic effect and temperature reveal the significant role played by lattice vibrations. Furthermore, the Hugoniot of the static-dynamic coupling compression is assessed. Our EOS suggests that a precompression of the sample to 50 GPa will allow the shock Hugoniot to pass through the triple point and enter the B2 solid phase. This transition leads to a discontinuity with 4.6% volume collapse-about four times greater than the same B1-B2 transition at zero temperature.

Abstract:The structural, magnetic, electronic and optical properties as well as phase stabilities under pressure for GdH2 and GdH3 are investigated using density function theory. The non-magnetic (NM), ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases are considered for the total energy calculations. The magnetic phase is much more stable than the nonmagnetic phase both at ambient pressure and high pressure for the cubic GdH2 or hexagonal GdH3, but the antiferromagnetic phase is only slightly more stable than the ferromagnetic phase at ambient pressure in the two cases. With increasing pressure, the antiferromagnetic fcc GdH2 may transform to the ferromagnetic phase, while the antiferromagnetic hcp GdH3 keeps stable in the interesting pressure range. The pure theoretical calculations further indicate that there is a structural transition from hcp to fcc for GdH3 at about 9.8GPa. In addition, the calculations of band structures and densities of states clearly show that the antiferromagnetic fcc GdH2 attributes to metal, whereas the antiferromagnetic hcp GdH3 attributes to semiconductor, but both have similar ionic–covalent bonding character. The semiconducting GdH3 may have a 1.55eV fundamental band gap. Under the fundamental band gap, the complex dielectric function and refractive index are predicted for the hcp GdH3 in the whole energy range.
The Mechanical and Thermodynamic Properties of Heusler Compounds Ni2xal (X = Sc, Ti, V) under Pressure and Temperature: A First-Principles Study

Abstract:The effect of pressure on structural and mechanical properties as well as the temperature dependence of thermodynamic properties, such as enthalpies of formation, elastic moduli, anisotropy, heat capacity and thermal expansion coefficient et al., of Ni2XAl (X=Sc, Ti, V) Heusler compounds are investigated implementing first-principles calculations. The influence of pressure on lattice parameters decreases as the increase of atomic number X (Sc, Ti, V). The Ni2XAl (X=Sc, Ti, V) show mechanically stable, ductility and anisotropy in 0–50GPa, and appropriate pressure can improve their mechanical properties because the bulk modulus B, shear modulus G, Young's modulus E, G/B and microhardness H almost linearly increase with pressure. The influence of pressure on B, G, E and H gradually decreases as the order of Ni2ScAl>Ni2TiAl>Ni2VAl, while it has an inverse effect on ductility and anisotropy. In addition, the resistance to volume deformation of NiAl alloys can be improved by second-phase strengthening with Ni2VAl and Ni2TiAl precipitates. Finally, the temperature and pressure dependences of bulk modulus, Debye temperature, heat capacity as well as thermal expansion coefficient of these compounds are elucidated using the quasi-harmonic Debye model. It is inverse for the effect of temperature and pressure on thermodynamic parameters.
Ab Initio Study of Pressure–induced Metallization and Superconductivity in Orthorhombic LiBH2 Phase under Ultra-High Pressure

Abstract:Hydrogen–rich materials are expected to become high–temperature superconductors after their metallization at pressures considerably lower than pure hydrogen. Combined with light elements Li and B, a high–pressure orthorhombic stable LiBH2 phase at 150 GPa is proposed by using CALYPSO and ab initio calculations. oS16-LiBH2 may be a highly plausible intermediate phase involved in dehydriding Pnma-LiBH4. Meanwhile, oS16-LiBH2 turns its semiconductor into a conducting property within the pressure range of 150 to 200 GPa and exhibits stronger conductivity along with an increasing pressure. Our electron–phonon coupling calculations reveal the softening of transverse acoustic mode B3u enhances the superconductivity of oS16-LiBH2 above 300 GPa, and its λ and Tc values increase to 1.15 and 10 K under 600 GPa, respectively. Furthermore, when the pressure exceeds 700 GPa, the B3u phonon softening makes oS16-LiBH2 dynamically unstable. Pressure–induced phonon softening may effectively improve the superconducting properties of hydrides within a certain pressure range.

Abstract:Using the projected augmented wave pseudo-potentials (PAW) approach and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) of Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (PBEsol) in the framework of the density functional theory as implemented in the Quantum Espresso code, the mechanical behaviour as well as the thermo-physical properties of LiAl 2 X (X = Rh, Pd, Ir and Pt) ternary intermetallic compounds under high hydrostatic pressure up to 10 GPa have been predicted. Our finding on the elastic stiffness constants, aggregate elastic modulus, Debye temperature, limiting angular vibrational frequency, vibrational energy as well as the vibrational free energy of LiAl 2 X (X = Rh, Pd, Ir and Pt) compounds shows that all these quantities increase monotonically with increasing pressure up to 10 GPa; while the elastic compliance constants (except S 12 ), the vibrational entropy and the constant volume heat capacity of LiAl 2 X (X = Rh, Pd, Ir and Pt) decrease monotonically with increasing pressure. At room-temperature and zero-pressure, the obtained values of the Debye temperature θ D are 486.10 K for LiAl 2 Rh, 462.51 K for LiAl 2 Pd, 401.36 K for LiAl 2 Ir and 406.62 K for LiAl 2 Pt, respectively; while at room-temperature and pressure of 10 GPa, the values obtained of θ D are around: 528.29 K for LiAl 2 Rh, 507.80 K for LiAl 2 Pd, 428.81 K for LiAl 2 Ir and 442.88 K for LiAl 2 Pt, respectively. In addition, the analysing of the generalized mechanical stability criteria under isotropic pressure shows that all our materials of interest are mechanically stable up to 10 GPa.

Abstract:A theoretical investigation on the mechanical, thermodynamic and electronic properties of β″-Mg3Gd and β′-Mg7Gd compounds at the effect of pressure have been conducted through the first-principles calculations. Since the shear modulus of β″ is less affected by pressure, its bulk modulus/shear modulus (B/G) is more sensitive to pressure than β′. Based on the analysis of vibrational heat capacity CV, β′ can absorb more heat at high temperature. The pressure-induced distribution of charges is more localized between atoms, making stronger covalent bonds. Further, the inhomogeneous distributions of covalent and metal bonds may be the reason for the increased anisotropy based on the Ranganathan's anisotropy index (AU). The Mg p and the Gd d states expand to both occupied and unoccupied states, whereas the lower energy Mg s and Gd s, p states expand primarily to bonding states under high pressures. The spatial distributions of Mg p and Gd d electrons hybridization at antibonding states act a crucial role in improving mechanical properties of alloys at the applied pressure.
Prediction of Stable Ground-State Lithium Polyhydrides under High Pressures

Abstract:Hydrogen-rich compounds are important for understanding the dissociation of dense molecular hydrogen, as well as searching for room temperature Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductors. A recent high pressure experiment reported the successful synthesis of novel insulating lithium polyhydrides when above 130 GPa. However, the results are in sharp contrast to previous theoretical prediction by PBE functional that around this pressure range all lithium polyhydrides (LiHn (n = 2-8)) should be metallic. In order to address this discrepancy, we perform unbiased structure search with first principles calculation by including the van der Waals interaction that was ignored in previous prediction to predict the high pressure stable structures of LiHn (n = 2-11, 13) up to 200 GPa. We reproduce the previously predicted structures, and further find novel compositions that adopt more stable structures. The van der Waals functional (vdW-DF) significantly alters the relative stability of lithium polyhydrides, and predicts that the stable stoichiometries for the ground-state should be LiH2 and LiH9 at 130-170 GPa, and LiH2, LiH8 and LiH10 at 180-200 GPa. Accurate electronic structure calculation with GW approximation indicates that LiH, LiH2, LiH7, and LiH9 are insulative up to at least 208 GPa, and all other lithium polyhydrides are metallic. The calculated vibron frequencies of these insulating phases are also in accordance with the experimental infrared (IR) data. This reconciliation with the experimental observation suggests that LiH2, LiH7, and LiH9 are the possible candidates for lithium polyhydrides synthesized in that experiment. Our results reinstate the credibility of density functional theory in description H-rich compounds, and demonstrate the importance of considering van der Waals interaction in this class of materials.
First-principles investigation of multifaceted properties; lattice dynamic, structural stability, mechanical, electronic, magnetic and thermodynamic response of Alkali metals-based semi Heusler alloys

Abstract:Taking into considerations the wide compositional stretch of Heusler alloys, the first principles density functional theory based calculations are excellently suitable for estimating the multifaceted properties of alkali metal based LiVSb and NaVSb Heusler alloys. We calculated ground state stability by optimizing the energy in alpha, beta and gamma phase configurations. The materials are dynamically stable in spin polarised phase type alpha. To explore the electronic structure, we successfully employed the generalized gradient approximation potential. The electronic band structures indicate a half-metallic nature featuring a wide indirect band gap of 1.40eV and 1.45eV. We computed the second-order elastic parameters at different pressure levels. The Pugh ratio less than 0.25 assessed that both alloys are brittle in nature and mechanically stable. The obtained magnetic moment is consistent with the Slater-Pauling rule. By executing the Quasi-Harmonic Debye model and Boltzmann theory we assessed the various thermodynamic parameters and transport coefficients of both alloys at different temperatures and pressures. All positive frequencies in lattice dynamic study confirmed their stability. Our findings highlight the potential of these alloys in modern semiconductor technology, and thermoelectric applications.

Abstract:Superconducting and superionic behaviors have physically intriguing dynamic properties of electrons and ions, respectively, both of which are conceptually important and have great potential for practical applications. Whether these two phenomena can appear in the same system is an interesting and important question. Here, using crystal structure predictions and first-principle calculations combined with machine learning, we identify several stable Li-Al compounds with electride behavior under high pressure, and we find that the electronic density of states of some of the compounds has characteristics of the two-dimensional electron gas. Among them, we estimate that Li6Al at 150 GPa has a superconducting transition temperature of around 29 K and enters a superionic state at a high temperature and wide pressure range. The diffusion in Li6Al is found to be affected by an electride and attributed to the atomic collective motion. Our results indicate that alkali metal alloys can be effective platforms to study the abundant physical properties and their manipulation with pressure and temperature. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.129.246403 © 2022 American Physical Society

Abstract:The stability, mechanical properties, electronic structure, and thermodynamic properties of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) Ag2Ga and CuGa2 under pressure in the ground state (T = 0 K and P = 0 GPa) are studied based on the first‐principles calculations of density functional theory. Understanding the material properties of Ag2Ga and CuGa2 IMC crystals will provide theoretical guidance for indirectly optimizing the properties of lead‐free solders. In this paper, the mechanical properties, electronic structures, and thermodynamic properties of Ag2Ga and CuGa2 under pressure are studied using the first‐principles method based on Density functional theory (DFT). With the increase in pressure, the equilibrium lattice constants (a/a0 and c/c0) and volume ratio (V/V0) of Ag2Ga and CuGa2 continuously decrease. The elastic constants show that Ag2Ga and CuGa2 are mechanically stable under pressures of 0–20 GPa, and the increase in pressure improves their deformation resistance. The results of Young's modulus (E) show that the hardness of CuGa2 is higher than that of Ag2Ga. The results of Cauchy pressure (C12 ‐ C44) and B/G ratio show that the plasticity of Ag2Ga and CuGa2 can be maintained with the increase in pressure. By analyzing the density of states (DOS), charge density difference (CDD), and population, the influence of pressure on electronic structure is studied. The calculated Debye temperature (θD) shows that the covalent bond of CuGa2 is stronger.

Abstract:In this study we report on the influence of hydrostatic pressure on structural, elastic, lattice dynamical and thermal properties of Li2S in the anti-fluorite structure using ab initio pseudopotential approach based on the density functional perturbation theory. Our results are found to be in good agreement with those existing in the literature. The present phonon dispersion spectra, dielectric constants and Born effective charges may be seen as the first investigation for the material under load. The pressure dependence of all features of interest has been examined and discussed. Besides, the temperature dependence of the lattice parameter and bulk modulus is predicted. The generalized elastic stability criteria showed that the material of interest is mechanically unstable for pressures beyond 55 GPa.

Abstract:Using first-principle calculations based on the density functional theory, we investigated the pressure effect on the structural, electrical, elastic, thermodynamic,electronic and optical properties of Li-based half-Heusler compounds LiZnZ (Z = N, P, and As). We found that the most stable structural phase is the α -phase at 0 GPa for all studied compounds. The obtained lattice parameters at 0 GPa align with existing experimental and theoretical findings for all compounds. The negative values of cohesive and formation energies of LiZnZ indicate that the studied compounds are chemically stable. Band structure calculations confirm the semiconductor behavior of all studied compounds. The calculated elastic and thermodynamic properties show that these compounds are mechanically and thermodynamically stable. The reflectivity values, which are approximately 39%, 54%, and 57% for LiZnN, LiZnP, and LiZnAs, respectively, suggest that the semiconductors LiZnZ are well-suited for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:In this study, the structural, elastic, electronic, and thermoelectric properties of full Li 2 BeAl and Li 2 BeGa Heusler alloys were explored using density functional and the Boltzmann transport theories. The GGA and HSE approximations have been used for the exchange–correlation potential. Results indicated that these two compounds are more energetically stable in the inverse Heusler structure. Additionally, both Li 2 BeAl and Li 2 BeGa Heusler alloys were found to be mechanically stable due to the positive values of the elastic constants. Also, the high values of the Young's modulus indicate that these compounds are stiff and exhibit a semi-metallic nature. The band gaps were determined to be 0.13 eV and − 0.22 eV for Li 2 BeAl and Li 2 BeGa alloys, respectively, using the GGA approximation. By employing the HSE hybrid functional, however, the band gap for Li 2 BeAl increased to 0.26 eV, and for Li 2 BeGa, it decreased to − 0.16 eV. Regarding thermoelectric properties, Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, electronic and lattice thermal conductivities, power factor, and the figure of merit have been calculated for both Li 2 BeAl and Li 2 BeGa Heusler alloys at different temperatures. Seebeck coefficient in both alloys decreases with increasing the temperature and has the highest value at 300 K. Thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity increase with increasing the temperature, which confirms the intermetallic behavior of the Heusler alloys. The results obtained for both alloys show that n -type doping has better thermoelectric properties than p -type doping. The maximum value of the figure of merit (ZT) was obtained for n-type doping, which was 1.43 at 660 K for Li 2 BeAl and 0.39 at 1000 K for Li 2 BeGa alloy. The high values of ZT especially for electron-dopped Li2BeAl suggest the great potential of this material for use in thermoelectric devices. This study suggests that the proposed materials have potential applications in spintronic devices and thermoelectric materials due to their intermetallic character and effective thermoelectric coefficients.

Abstract:Abstract Regarded as doped binary hydrides, ternary hydrides have recently become the subject of investigation since they are deemed to be metallic under pressure and possibly potentially high-temperature superconductors. Herein, the candidate structure of Li 5 MoH 11 is predicted by exploiting the evolutionary searching. Its high-pressure phase adopts a hexagonal structure with P6 3 /mcm space group. We used first-principles calculations including the zero-point energy to investigate the structures up to 200 GPa and found that the P6 3 cm structure transforms into the P6 3 /mcm structure at 48 GPa. Phonon calculations confirm that the P6 3 /mcm structure is dynamically stable. Its stability is mainly attributed to the isostructural second-order phase transition. Our calculations reveal the electronic topological transition displaying an isostructural second-order phase transition at 160 GPa as well as the topology of its Fermi surfaces. We used the projected crystal orbital Hamilton population (pCOHP) to examine the nature of the chemical bonding and demonstrated that the results obtained from the pCOHP calculation are associated with the electronic band structure and electronic localized function.

First Principles Study of Structural, Elastic, Electronic and Optical Features of the Non-centrosymmetric Superconductors SrMGe3 (Where M= Ir, Pt, and Pd)

Abstract:BaNiSn3-type superconductors SrIrGe3, SrPdGe3, and SrPtGe3 have a critical temperature of 1.80 K, 1.49K and 1.0K respectively have been reported recently. Employing the first-principles method based on the density functional theory, we have examined the physical properties including structural, elastic, electronic, and optical phenomena of all these structures. For all the phases our optimized lattice parameters are well accord to the experimental lattice parameters. The positive elastic constants of these compounds revealed that these superconductors possess mechanical stability in nature. The values of Pugh’s ratio and Poisson’s ratio ensured the brittle manner of these compounds and anisotropic behavior is ensured by the values of anisotropy factor. The soft nature of all compounds is confirmed by the bulk modulus analysis. The values of Vickers's hardness indicate that the rigidity decreased in the order of SrIrGe3>SrPtGe3>SrPdGe3. The overlapping of the conduction band and valence band at Fermi level indicates the zero band gaps and metallic nature of SrIrGe3, SrPdGe3, and SrPtGe3. The chief contribution around the Fermi level arises from Ir-5d, Ge-4s, 4p states for SrIrGe3 and Ge-4s, 4p states for SrPdGe3 and Pt-5d, Ge-4s, 4p for SrPtGe3 compound. The study of DOS, Mulliken atomic populations, and charge density ensured the existence of complex bonding in SrIrGe3, SrPdGe3, and SrPtGe3 with ionic, covalent, and metallic characteristics. The analysis of the dielectric function also ensured the metallic behavior of all these compounds.
Ab-initio insights into the physical properties of XIr3 (X = La, Th) superconductors: A comparative analysis

Abstract:Here we report the structural, elastic, bonding, thermo-mechanical, optoelectronic and superconducting state properties of recently discovered XIr3 (X = La, Th) superconductors utilizing the density functional theory (DFT). The elastic, bonding, thermal and optical properties of these compounds are investigated for the first time. The calculated lattice and superconducting state parameters are in reasonable agreement to those found in the literature. In the ground state, both the compounds are mechanically stable and possess highly ductile character, high machinability, low Debye temperature, low bond hardness and significantly high melting point. The thermal conductivities of the compounds are found to be very low which suggests that they can be used for thermal insulation purpose. The population analysis and charge density distribution map confirm the presence of both ionic and covalent bonds in the compounds with ionic bond playing dominant roles. The calculated band structure and DOS profiles indicate metallic character. Unlike the significant anisotropy observed in elastic and thermal properties, all the optical constants of these compounds exhibit almost isotropic behavior. The optical constants correspond very well with the electronic band structure and DOS features. We have estimated the superconducting transition temperature of the compounds in this work.

First-Principles Calculations of the Structural, Elastic, Electronic and Optical Properties of Orthorhombic Ligas2 and Ligase2

Abstract:The structural, electronic and optical properties of two orthorhombic crystals, LiGaS2 and LiGaSe2, were calculated using the density functional theory. The optimized unit cells are in good agreement with experimental data. The mechanical stability of LiGaS2 and LiGaSe2 has been confirmed by calculation of the elastic constants. The band structures, density of states were obtained. It is shown that the two crystals belong to the semiconductors with a direct energy band gap of about 3.12 and 2.34 eV. The bonding properties were analyzed according to the electronic structural data. The optical properties including the dielectric spectra, absorption spectra, refractive index, extinction coefficient, reflectivity, and energy-loss spectra were also calculated and the results indicate that the two compounds are promising mid-IR crystal materials. Persistent Insulator: Avoidance of Metallization at Megabar Pressures in Strongly Spin-Orbit-Coupled Sr2IrO4

Abstract: It is commonly anticipated that an insulating state collapses in favor of an emergent metallic state at high pressures as the unit cell shrinks and the electronic bandwidth broadens to fill the insulating energy band gap. Here we report a rare insulating state that persists up to at least 185 GPa in the antiferromagnetic iridate Sr2IrO4, which is the archetypical spin-orbit-driven Jeff = 1/2 insulator. This study shows the electrical resistance of single-crystal Sr2IrO4 initially decreases with applied pressure, reaches a minimum in the range, 32 - 38 GPa, then abruptly rises to fully recover the insulating state with further pressure increases up to 185 GPa. Our synchrotron x-ray diffraction and Raman scattering data show the onset of the rapid increase in resistance is accompanied by a structural phase transition from the native tetragonal I41/acd phase to an orthorhombic Pbca phase (with much reduced symmetry) at 40.6 GPa. The clear-cut correspondence of these two anomalies is key to understanding the stability of the insulating state at megabar pressures: Pressure-induced, severe structural distortions prevent the expected metallization, despite the 26% volume compression attained at the highest pressure accessed in this study. Moreover, the resistance of Sr2IrO4 remains stable while the applied pressure is tripled from 61 GPa to 185 GPa. These results suggest that a novel type of electronic Coulomb correlation compensates the anticipated band broadening in strongly spin-orbit-coupled materials at megabar pressures.
Comprehensive first-principles insights into the physical properties of intermetallic Zr$_3$Ir: a noncentrosymmetric superconductor

Abstract:We have looked into the structural, mechanical, optoelectronic, superconducting state and thermophysical aspects of intermetallic compound Zr$_3$Ir using the density functional theory (DFT). Many of the physical properties, including direction dependent mechanical properties, Vickers hardness, optical properties, chemical bonding nature, and charge density distributions, are being investigated for the first time. According to this study, Zr$_3$Ir exhibits ductile features, high machinability, significant metallic bonding, a low Vickers hardness with low Debye temperature, and a modest level of elastic anisotropy. The mechanical and dynamical stabilities of Zr$_3$Ir have been confirmed. The metallic nature of Zr$_3$Ir is seen in the electronic band structures with a high electronic energy density of states at the Fermi level. The bonding nature has been explored by the charge density mapping and bond population analysis. The tetragonal Zr$_3$Ir shows a remarkable electronic stability, as confirmed by the presence of a pseudogap in the electronic energy density of states at the Fermi level between the bonding and antibonding states. Optical parameters show very good agreement with the electronic properties. The reflectivity spectra reveal that Zr$_3$Ir is a good reflector in the infrared and near-visible regions. Zr$_3$Ir is an excellent ultra-violet (UV) radiation absorber. High refractive index at visible photon energies indicates that Zr$_3$Ir could be used to improve the visual aspects of electronic displays. All the optical constants exhibit a moderate degree of anisotropy. Zr$_3$Ir has a moderate melting point, high damage tolerance, and very low minimum thermal conductivity. The thermomechanical characteristics of Zr$_3$Ir reveal that it is a potential thermal barrier coating material. The superconducting state parameters of Zr$_3$Ir are also explored.

Abstract:The density functional theory was employed to explore the structural, electronic, magnetic, optical, and thermoelectric properties of full Heusler alloys Rh 2 FeZ (Z = Al, Ga, In). The structural properties of the alloys were investigated, and it was found that the Rh 2 FeZ (Z = Al, Ga, In) alloys ferromagnetically stable in the Cu 2 MnAl type crystal structure. The dynamic stability was also evaluated using the phonon dispersion curve.The exchange correlation potential has been approximated using GGA and GGA + U methods. The electronic structure, density of states and magnetism for the GGA + U method show that all of these alloys are indirect band gap semiconductor with half metallic ferromagnetic character.The total magnetic moment values of these alloys in GGA + U satisfy the Slater-Pauling (SP) rule. The dielectric function, refractive indices, and energy loss function are all calculated optical properties. The Seebeck coefficients, electrical, thermal, and power factor as a function of temperature are calculated using the semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory to understand their thermoelectric properties. All of these results imply that full Heusler alloys composed of Rh 2 FeAl, Rh 2 FeGa, and Rh 2 FeIn would be good for spintronic and thermoelectric device applications.
