Abstract:Executing flight missions in complex and unknown environments poses a significant challenge for visually limited Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles (FWMAVs). The difficulties are primarily manifested in two ways: Firstly, the dynamic constraints of the FWMAV impose curvature constraints on its flight trajectory. Secondly, perceiving obstacles and achieving obstacle avoidance under visually limited conditions is highly challenging. In this study, we initially introduce an enhanced version of the Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm. This refined approach to path planning significantly mitigates the jitter experienced during the trajectory tracking of FWMAVs. Subsequently, we present a novel re-planning strategy, which empowers the aircraft to autonomously navigate through complex and unknown environments, relying exclusively on touch sensors affixed to its wings, which has been verified through simulation. This strategy offers a viable alternative approach in scenarios where visual perception capabilities are constrained or limited.

Abstract:The utilization of a well-established flapping wing robot simulation holds significant importance in the advancement of flapping wing mechanisms and algorithms. This research paper introduces a pioneering application-oriented flapping wing robot simulation platform that exhibits high compatibility with diverse mechanical designs and adaptability to various robotic tasks. Initially, the paper presents the blade element theory and the quasi-steady model as computational approaches for determining the aerodynamics of flapping wings based on their kinematics. The computation incorporates translational lift, translational drag, rotational lift, added mass force, and clap-and-fling mechanism. The simulation platform is validated through flight control tasks, providing a comprehensive assessment of its performance. Moreover, this study addresses the challenges of attitude tracking and trajectory tracking control for a specially designed flapping wing robot. The proposed control strategies are evaluated through real flight experiments, offering practical insights into the robot flight capabilities. Note to Practitioners —One of the primary contributions of this research is the introduction of a novel and robust flapping wing flight controller that effectively addresses the challenges associated with attitude tracking control and positional trajectory tracking. The proposed controller demonstrates superior performance compared to existing algorithms, as evidenced by comparative simulations conducted on the developed simulation platform. Furthermore, real flight experiments are performed on a self-made flapping wing robot using the same control algorithm and parameters employed in the simulations. Another highlight lies in the transferability from simulation to reality. The utilization of a high-fidelity simulation platform enables in-depth exploration and scrutiny of complex behaviors manifested in diverse flight tasks. This, in turn, allows for meticulous analysis and examination to gain valuable insights into the practical implementation of flapping wing robot flight.
Target Detection and Localization for Flapping-Wing Robots Based on Biological Eagle-Eye Vision

Abstract:In recent years, the development of flapping-wing robots (FWRs) has made rapid progress. However, the vision-based perception system of FWRs is still in its infancy, which seriously limits the application of FWRs in military reconnaissance and civil monitoring. To this end, this article designs an eagle-eye-based vision system for target detection, tracking and localization, which fits well with the perception requirements of FWRs. First, inspired by the double-fovea structure of eagle eye, a two-degree-of-freedom pan-tilt equipped with two different focal length cameras is established. Second, the aerial photography characteristics of FWRs and the lateral inhibition mechanism are employed to improve the accuracy of target detection. Third, based on the information of the two different focal length cameras, a cooperative control method is proposed for the pan-tilt to achieve target tracking and the light gradient boosting machine algorithm is adopted to improve the accuracy of target localization. Finally, flight experiments under various scenarios are conducted by using our self-developed FWR named USTB-Hawk, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed vision system.
Trajectory Generation and Tracking Control for Flapping Wing Robot Three-Dimensional Flight

Abstract:This article presents both the trajectory generation and tracking control strategies for an underactuated flapping wing aerial vehicle (FWAV). First, the FWAV dynamics is analyzed in a practical perspective. Then, based on these analyzes, we demonstrate the differential flatness of the FWAV system, and develop a general-purpose trajectory generation strategy. Subsequently, the trajectory tracking controller is developed with the help of robust control and switch control techniques. After that, the overall system asymptotic stability is guaranteed by Lyapunov stability analysis. To make the controller applicable in real flight, we also provide several instructions. Finally, a series of experiment results manifest the successful implementation of the proposed trajectory generation strategy and tracking control strategy. Addressing the dynamics in the vertical frame has been demonstrated to be advantageous in accomplishing the trajectory generation task. And in the controller development, we associate the reduced attitude with the outer loop dynamics, and finally achieve the global practical asymptotic stability for the overall tracking system. This work first achieves the closed-loop integration of trajectory generation and control for real 3-D flight of an underactuated FWAV to a practical level.
Autonomous Flights in Dynamic Environments with Onboard Vision

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a complete system for autonomous flight of quadrotors in dynamic environments with onboard sensing. Extended from existing work, we develop an occlusion-aware dynamic perception method based on depth images, which classifies obstacles as dynamic and static. For representing generic dynamic environment, we model dynamic objects with moving ellipsoids and fuse static ones into an occupancy grid map. To achieve dynamic avoidance, we design a planning method composed of modified kinodynamic path searching and gradient-based optimization. The method leverages manually constructed gradients without maintaining a signed distance field (SDF), making the planning procedure finished in milliseconds. We integrate the above methods into a customized quadrotor system and thoroughly test it in real-world experiments, verifying its effective collision avoidance in dynamic environments.
Avoiding dynamic small obstacles with onboard sensing and computating on aerial robots

Abstract:In practical applications, autonomous quadrotors are still facing significant challenges, such as the detection and avoidance of very small and even dynamic obstacles (e.g., tree branches, power lines). In this paper, we propose a compact, integrated, and fully autonomous quadrotor system, which can fly safely in cluttered environments while avoiding dynamic small obstacles. Our quadrotor platform is equipped with a forward-looking three-dimensional (3D) light detection and ranging (lidar) sensor to perceive the environment and an onboard embedded computer to perform all the estimation, mapping, and planning tasks. Specifically, the computer estimates the current pose of the UAV, maintains a local map (time-accumulated point clouds KD-Trees), and computes a safe trajectory using kinodynamic A* search to the goal point. The whole perception and planning system can run onboard at 50Hz with careful optimization. Various indoor and outdoor experiments show that the system can avoid dynamic small obstacles (down to 20mm diameter bar) while flying at 2m/s in cluttered environments. Our codes and hardware design are open-sourced on Github.

Abstract:Nanosize drones hold enormous potential to explore unknown and complex environments. Their small size makes them agile and safe for operation close to humans and allows them to navigate through narrow spaces. However, their tiny size and payload restrict the possibilities for onboard computation and sensing, making fully autonomous flight extremely challenging. The first step toward full autonomy is reliable obstacle avoidance, which has proven to be challenging by itself in a generic indoor environment. Current approaches utilize vision-based or 1-D sensors to support nanodrone perception algorithms. This article presents a lightweight obstacle avoidance system based on a novel millimeter form factor 64 pixels multizone time-of-flight (ToF) sensor and a generalized model-free control policy. In-field tests are based on the Crazyflie 2.1, extended by a custom multizone ToF deck, featuring a total flight mass of 35 g. The algorithm only uses 0.3% of the onboard processing power ( execution time) with a frame rate of 15 f/s. The presented autonomous nanosize drone reaches 100% reliability at 0.5 m/s in a generic and previously unexplored indoor environment.

Abstract:Autonomous flight of flapping-wing robots is a major challenge for robot perception. Most of the previous sense-and-avoid works have studied the problem of obstacle avoidance for flapping-wing robots considering only static obstacles. This paper presents a fully onboard dynamic sense-and-avoid scheme for large-scale ornithopters using event cameras. These sensors trigger pixel information due to changes of illumination in the scene such as those produced by dynamic objects. The method performs event-by-event processing in low-cost hardware such as those onboard small aerial vehicles. The proposed scheme detects obstacles and evaluates possible collisions with the robot body. The onboard controller actuates over the horizontal and vertical tail deflections to execute the avoidance maneuver. The scheme is validated in both indoor and outdoor scenarios using obstacles of different shapes and sizes. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first event-based method for dynamic obstacle avoidance in a flapping-wing robot.

[Transplantation of vascularized tissue flaps in the treatment of chronic osteomyelitis].

Abstract:Experience in transplantation of vascularized tissue grafts in 38 patients with chronic osteomyelitis showed the method to be highly effective and to possess some essential advantages over the other methods for surgical treatment of chronic osteomyelitis. Some types of skin and musculocutaneous grafts were used in cases with affection of the leg and foot bones with defects in the skin and soft tissues and "osteomyelitic ulcers". A vascularized graft of the greater omentum was used in the management of large osteomyelitic cavities in the tubular bones. The grafts took in 92.1% of patients.
Adaptive control of a millimeter-scale flapping-wing robot

Abstract:Challenges for the controlled flight of a robotic insect are due to the inherent instability of the system, complex fluid-structure interactions, and the general lack of a complete system model. In this paper, we propose theoretical models of the system based on the limited information available from previous work and a comprehensive flight controller. The modular flight controller is derived from Lyapunov function candidates with proven stability over a large region of attraction. Moreover, it comprises adaptive components that are capable of coping with uncertainties in the system that arise from manufacturing imperfections. We have demonstrated that the proposed methods enable the robot to achieve sustained hovering flights with relatively small errors compared to a non-adaptive approach. Simple lateral maneuvers and vertical takeoff and landing flights are also shown to illustrate the fidelity of the flight controller. The analysis suggests that the adaptive scheme is crucial in order to achieve millimeter-scale precision in flight control as observed in natural insect flight.

Abstract:Tried-and-true flapping wing robot simulation is essential in developing flapping wing mechanisms and algorithms. This paper presents a novel application-oriented flapping wing platform, highly compatible with various mechanical designs and adaptable to different robotic tasks. First, the blade element theory and the quasi-steady model are put forward to compute the flapping wing aerodynamics based on wing kinematics. Translational lift, translational drag, rotational lift, and added mass force are all considered in the computation. Then we use the proposed simulation platform to investigate the passive wing rotation and the wing-tail interaction phenomena of a particular flapping-wing robot. With the help of the simulation tool and a novel statistic based on dynamic differences from the averaged system, several behaviors display their essence by investigating the flapping wing robot dynamic characteristics. After that, the attitude tracking control problem and the positional trajectory tracking problem are both overcome by robust control techniques. Further comparison simulations reveal that the proposed control algorithms compared with other existing ones show apparent superiority. What is more, with the same control algorithm and parameters tuned in simulation, we conduct real flight experiments on a self-made flapping wing robot, and obtain similar results from the proposed simulation platform. In contrast to existing simulation tools, the proposed one is compatible with most existing flapping wing robots, and can inherently drill into each subtle behavior in corresponding applications by observing aerodynamic forces and torques on each blade element.

Insect-Scale Tailless Robot with Flapping Wings: A Simple Structure and Drive for Yaw Control

Abstract:Insect-scale micro-aerial vehicles, especially, lightweight, flapping-wing robots, are becoming increasingly important for safe motion sensing in spatially constrained environments such as living spaces. However, yaw control using flapping wings is fundamentally more difficult than using rotating wings. In this study, an insect-scale, tailless robot with four paired tilted flapping wings (weighing 1.52 g) to enable yaw control was fabricated. It benefits from the simplicity of a directly driven wing actuator with no transmission and a lift control signal; however, it still has an offset in the lift force. Therefore, an adaptive controller was designed to alleviate the offset. Numerical experiments confirm that the proposed controller outperforms the linear quadratic integral controller. Finally, in a tethered and controlled demonstration flight, the yaw drift was suppressed by the wing-tilting arrangement and the proposed controller. The simple structure drive system demonstrates the potential for future controlled flights of battery-powered, tailless, flapping-wing robots weighing less than 10 grams.

Abstract:A micro unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) only equipped with a monocular camera is hard to accomplish a flying task with obstacles avoidance and target tracking simultaneously. In this article, a bionic dynamic path planning algorithm was developed for cooperation of obstacles avoidance and target tracking. An improved bat algorithm (BA) optimized transfer learning convolutional neural network (CNN) and bio-inspired optical flow balance algorithm was combined for obstacles avoidance. The Hawk-eye algorithm with line of sight (LOS) tracking rules is aimed at UAV dynamic tracking with obstacles avoidance. All of perception information, including avoidance and tracking were fused in UAV motion decision phase. The experiments include “obstacles avoidance” and “obstacles avoidance + target tracking” parts. Comparing with manual control and other algorithms, the bionic dynamic path planning algorithm in this article showed certain advantages in success rate, less obstacles collisions, and less major accidents.

Modeling and LQR Control of Insect Sized Flapping Wing Robot

Abstract:Flying insects can perform rapid, sophisticated maneuvers like backflips, sharp banked turns, and in-flight collision recovery. To emulate these in aerial robots weighing less than a gram, known as flying insect robots (FIRs), a fast and responsive control system is essential. To date, these have largely been, at their core, elaborations of proportional-integral-derivative (PID)-type feedback control. Without exception, their gains have been painstakingly tuned by hand. Aggressive maneuvers have further required task-specific tuning. Optimal control has the potential to mitigate these issues, but has to date only been demonstrated using approxiate models and receding horizon controllers (RHC) that are too computationally demanding to be carried out onboard the robot. Here we used a more accurate stroke-averaged model of forces and torques to implement the first demonstration of optimal control on an FIR that is computationally efficient enough to be performed by a microprocessor carried onboard. We took force and torque measurements from a 150 mg FIR, the UW Robofly, using a custom-built sensitive force-torque sensor, and validated them using motion capture data in free flight. We demonstrated stable hovering (RMS error of about 4 cm) and trajectory tracking maneuvers at translational velocities up to 25 cm/s using an optimal linear quadratic regulator (LQR). These results were enabled by a more accurate model and lay the foundation for future work that uses our improved model and optimal controller in conjunction with recent advances in low-power receding horizon control to perform accurate aggressive maneuvers without iterative, task-specific tuning.

Abstract:The overall safety of a building can be effectively evaluated through regular inspection of the indoor walls by unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). However, when the UGV performs line patrol inspections according to the specified path, it is easy to be affected by obstacles. This paper presents an obstacle avoidance strategy for unmanned ground vehicles in indoor environments. The proposed method is based on monocular vision. Through the obtained environmental information in front of the unmanned vehicle, the obstacle orientation is determined, and the moving direction and speed of the mobile robot are determined based on the neural network output and confidence. This paper also innovatively adopts the method of collecting indoor environment images based on camera array and realizes the automatic classification of data sets by arranging cameras with different directions and focal lengths. In the training of a transfer neural network, aiming at the problem that it is difficult to set the learning rate factor of the new layer, the improved bat algorithm is used to find the optimal learning rate factor on a small sample data set. The simulation results show that the accuracy can reach 94.84%. Single-frame evaluation and continuous obstacle avoidance evaluation are used to verify the effectiveness of the obstacle avoidance algorithm. The experimental results show that an unmanned wheeled robot with a bionic transfer-convolution neural network as the control command output can realize autonomous obstacle avoidance in complex indoor scenes.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are becoming popular in various applications. However, there are still challenging issues to be tackled, such as effective obstacle avoidance, target identification within a crowd, and specific target tracking. This paper focuses on dynamic target following and obstacle avoidance to realize a prototype of a quadcopter drone to serve as an autonomous object follower. An adaptive target identification system is proposed to recognize the specific target in the complicated background. For obstacle avoidance during flight, we introduce an idea of space detection and use it to develop a so-called contour and spiral convolution space detection (CASCSD) algorithm to evade obstacles. Thanks to the low architecture complexity, it is appropriate for implementation on onboard flight control systems. The target prediction is integrated with fuzzified flight control to fulfill an autonomous target tracker. When this series of technical research and development is completed, this system can be used for applications such as personal security guard and criminal detection systems.

Abstract:This paper explores three main issues in the context of Ghana: constraints on the delivery of effective special educational needs (SEN); the range of information and communication technologies (ICT)-based needs identified by teachers, pupils and organizations involved in the delivery of SEN; and existing practices in the use of ICTs in SEN in the country. It concludes that people with disabilities continue to be highly marginalized, both in terms of policy and practice. Those involved in delivering SEN nevertheless recognize that ICTs can indeed contribute significantly to the learning processes of people with disabilities. Governments across Africa must take positive action to ensure that such experience with ICTs can be used to enable those with SEN to achieve their full potential, whether in special schools or included within mainstream education.

Abstract:The flapping wing robot (FWR), inspired by avian aerodynamics, is a distinct category of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Different to general UAVs, such as quadcopters, FWRs are featured by their superior aerodynamic capabilities, minimal noise generation, inherent stealth, and lower energy consumption. As a result, they are rapidly becoming vital tools in a variety of civilian and military activities including environmental monitoring, disaster detection, search and rescue operations, ecological conservation, and military manoeuvres. Our study introduces the comprehensive integration of a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) module, serving as a visual perception device, with a large FWR that is equipped with 2-meter, two-segment wings. Based on this setup, the geospatial information of targeted area is captured and compared to the existed topographic data.

Abstract:Flapping-wing flying insects possess various advantages, such as high agility and efficiency. The design and manufacture of insect-scale flapping-wing micro aerial vehicle(FWMAV) have attracted increasing attention in recent decades. Due to the limitations of size and weight, the FWMAV with an onboard battery which can fully mimic insect flight has not been achieved. In this work, we design and fabricate a highly integrated flapping-wing microrobot named Robomoth. The Robomoth consists of a carbon chassis, customized power and control devices, and two piezoelectric ceramic actuators symmetrically distributed in the thorax and controlled individually. It weighs 2.487 g, spans 5.9 cm in length, possesses 9 cm of wingspan, and carries a 0.355 g rechargeable lithium battery. We demonstrate the mobility of the Robomoth through untethered gliding and making turns on the water surface. A simplified dynamic model of the flapping system is proposed to explain the relationship between the driving frequency and the flapping amplitude. The Robomoth is one new untethered bioinspired flapping-wing robot that can perform stable water surface motion, which holds potential applications such as search and rescue on the water. The robot can also provide insight for designing insect-scale flying vehicles.
Seeing Through Pixel Motion: Learning Obstacle Avoidance from Optical Flow with One Camera

Abstract:Optical flow captures the motion of pixels in an image sequence over time, providing information about movement, depth, and environmental structure. Flying insects utilize this information to navigate and avoid obstacles, allowing them to execute highly agile maneuvers even in complex environments. Despite its potential, autonomous flying robots have yet to fully leverage this motion information to achieve comparable levels of agility and robustness. Challenges of control from optical flow include extracting accurate optical flow at high speeds, handling noisy estimation, and ensuring robust performance in complex environments. To address these challenges, we propose a novel end-to-end system for quadrotor obstacle avoidance using monocular optical flow. We develop an efficient differentiable simulator coupled with a simplified quadrotor model, allowing our policy to be trained directly through first-order gradient optimization. Additionally, we introduce a central flow attention mechanism and an action-guided active sensing strategy that enhances the policy's focus on task-relevant optical flow observations to enable more responsive decision-making during flight. Our system is validated both in simulation and the real world using an FPV racing drone. Despite being trained in a simple environment in simulation, our system is validated both in simulation and the real world using an FPV racing drone.
