Abstract:Abstract Understanding how marine food webs are affected by anthropogenic stressors is an important steppingstone toward the improved management of natural resources. Stable isotope analysis of historical and modern samples spanning a century indicated that the niche width of an exploited fish community increased after the expansion of New Zealand fisheries. Since the 2000s most species increased their reliance on food webs supported by pelagic production, compared to coastal production supported by macroalgae, and shifted to a higher trophic level. Overall changes were coincident with ocean warming, climate oscillations, prey abundance and fishing intensity, but their effects were specific to each fish assemblage analyzed. Data derived from historical samples revealed how anthropogenic stressors can drive long-term shifts in the trophic structure of an exploited fish community.

Impacts of Fishing on the Marine Mean Trophic Level in Chinese Marine Area

Abstract:Studying the long-term effects of fishing on the marine mean trophic level (MTL) is very important for understanding the status of marine ecosystems, and it will help in the design of appropriate conservation management strategies. Using data on fishery landings from the FAO Fishery Statistics (FishStatJ_2.0.0_win32, 1950 to 2011), we analyzed changes in the fishery landings of 51 marine species/groups in the Chinese marine area and their impacts on MTL. We obtained the following results: China's fishery landings increased gradually from 0.72×106t to 3.29×106t between 1950 and 1977; it increased sharply from 2.74×106t to 13.21×106t between 1981 and 1998, declined to 12.00×106t in 2002 and remained relatively stable until 2008, and increased again to 12.86×106t between 2009 and 2011. The percentage of landings from species/groups whose trophic level was higher than 3.5 was about 28% in 1975–1977; it declined to 17.1% in 1979–1981, increased to 27.00% in 1979–1981, declined from 24.57% to 13.64% in 1982–1988, fluctuated around 19.43% in 1997, and then increased steadily to 35.8% from 1997 to 2011. China's MTL remained stable from 1950 to 1974, fluctuated slightly around 3.45, declined to 3.35 in 1975–1978, and increased to 3.45 in 1979–1981. However, the MTL declined sharply to 3.25 in 1982–1987 and remained stable 10years afterwards. The decreasing rate of MTL was 0.05 per decade during 1950–1997; it increased gradually to 3.34 from 1997 to 2011, during which the increasing rate was 0.12 per decade. The fishing in balance index of Chinese marine area showed a clear increasing trend since 1950; the trend was greater than 0.5 since 1959, and it increased to greater than 1 since 1995. The changes in MTL were closely related to the composition of the fish species/groups in the total fishery landings, especially the fish species/groups of which the MTL was greater than 3.5, such as Trichiurus haumela, Larimichthys polyactis, Larimichthys crocea, Engraulis japonicas, and Decapterus spp. The general declining trend of MTL indicates that the dominant fishery landings changed from benthic fishes with a long life span and high trophic level (e.g., T. haumela) to invertebrates and pelagic fishes with a short life span and low trophic level (e.g., Decapterus spp.). The increase in MTL in China from 1997 to 2011 may be attributable to a series of fishery management countermeasures, such as setting up closed fishing seasons and non-fishing zones, establishing marine protected areas for fishery restoration. We also found that MTL may differ when statistical landings data and species richness data are used, and may be affected by the quality of the fisheries statistics. Moreover, species' trophic level, which is assumed to be constant, may have changed over time. The effects of these factors on MTL should be explored in the future.
Shortened food chain length in a fished versus unfished coral reef

Abstract:Direct exploitation through fishing is driving dramatic declines of wildlife populations in ocean environments, particularly for predatory and large‐bodied taxa. Despite wide recognition of this pattern and well‐established consequences of such trophic downgrading on ecosystem function, there have been few empirical studies examining the effects of fishing on whole system trophic architecture. Understanding these kinds of structural impacts is especially important in coral reef ecosystems—often heavily fished and facing multiple stressors. Given the often high dietary flexibility and numerous functional redundancies in diverse ecosystems such as coral reefs, it is important to establish whether web architecture is strongly impacted by fishing pressure or whether it might be resilient, at least to moderate‐intensity pressure. To examine this question, we used a combination of bulk and compound‐specific stable isotope analyses measured across a range of predatory and low‐trophic‐level consumers between two coral reef ecosystems that differed with respect to fishing pressure but otherwise remained largely similar. We found that even in a high‐diversity system with relatively modest fishing pressure, there were strong reductions in the trophic position (TP) of the three highest TP consumers examined in the fished system but no effects on the TP of lower‐level consumers. We saw no evidence that this shortening of the affected food webs was being driven by changes in basal resource consumption, for example, through changes in the spatial location of foraging by consumers. Instead, this likely reflected internal changes in food web architecture, suggesting that even in diverse systems and with relatively modest pressure, human harvest causes significant compressions in food chain length. This observed shortening of these food webs may have many important emergent ecological consequences for the functioning of ecosystems impacted by fishing or hunting. Such important structural shifts may be widespread but unnoticed by traditional surveys. This insight may also be useful for applied ecosystem managers grappling with choices about the relative importance of protection for remote and pristine areas and the value of strict no‐take areas to protect not just the raw constituents of systems affected by fishing and hunting but also the health and functionality of whole systems.

Abstract:Marine communities have been impacted by human activities for centuries, yet historical data are rarely incorporated into modern conservation efforts and restoration targets. For inshore waters, survey data sets are typically lacking because they extend back by only a few decades, despite their ecological significance as nursery grounds for many fish species. We investigated long-term change in a demersal fish assemblage from inshore waters of the Northumberland coast (UK). We collated unique historical data (1899-1913) that were sampled using a wooden beam trawl during scientific trawling investigations, shortly after the onset of widespread mechanised trawling in the North Sea. Twelve decades later (2018-2019), we re-surveyed the same bays using a modern otter trawl. The results revealed marked declines in the abundance and diversity of the entire fish and flatfish assemblage as well as among individual species. Elasmobranchs and formerly abundant species such as grey gurnard Eutrigla gurnardus were completely absent in contemporary surveys, while dab Limanda limanda and plaice Pleuronectes platessa were the most dominant species in both periods. Changes were also detected in the size distributions of the entire fish and flatfish assemblages, with proportionally fewer large individuals recorded in contemporary surveys. These findings suggest that over a century of trawling and climate change, combined with pollution, habitat alteration and increased predation risk are likely contributors to changes in the inshore fish assemblage. This work provides further evidence of long-term decline in North Sea inshore waters and offers an invaluable benchmark for improving coastal ecosystem status.

Abstract:<p>Global climate change has already caused bottom temperatures of coastal marine ecosystems to increase worldwide. These ecosystems face many pressures, of which fishing is one of the most important. While consequences of global warming on commercial species are studied extensively, the importance of the increase in bottom temperature and of variation in fishing effort is more rarely considered together in these exploited ecosystems. Using a 17‐year time series from an international bottom‐trawl survey, we investigated co‐variations of an entire demersal ecosystem (101 taxa) with the environment in the Celtic Sea. Our results showed that over the past two decades, biotic communities in the Celtic Sea were likely controlled more by environmental variables than fisheries, probably due to its long history of exploitation. At the scale of the entire zone, relations between taxa and the environment remained stable over the years, but at a local scale, in the center of the Celtic Sea, dynamics were driven by inter‐annual variation in temperature. Fishing was an important factor structuring species assemblages at the beginning of the time series (2000) but decreased in importance after 2009. This was most likely caused by a change in spatial distribution of fishing effort, following a change in targeted taxa from nephrops to deeper water anglerfish that did not co‐vary with fishing effort. Increasing bottom temperatures could induce additional changes in the coming years, notably in the cold‐water commercial species cod, hake, nephrops and American plaice. We showed that analyzing co‐variation is an effective way to screen a large number of taxa and highlight those that may be most susceptible to future simultaneous increases in temperature and changes in exploitation pattern by fisheries. This information can be particularly relevant for ecosystem assessments.</p>

Abstract:Century‐scale changes in principal fishery species, as revealed by rich qualitative historical sources. The plot shows the main species landed in four ports in northern Wales (Irish Sea, UK) in three different time periods, illustrating the loss of productive fish fisheries (herring; diverse demersal fishes), to modern‐day fisheries focusing on a few invertebrate species. Sources: 'principle commodities' (Plans of Harbours, bays and roads in St. George's channel, 1748); 'principal kinds of fish' (Annual reports of proceedings under acts relating to sea fisheries (England and Wales) for the year 1905, 1906); taxa collectively comprising a minimum of 80% landed value (UK sea fisheries annual statistics report 2019, 2020). Policies aiming to restore ecosystems, achieve thriving fisheries and reverse biodiversity loss require knowledge of their former status and long‐term variation. As quantitative fish data is typically only available for recent decades long after changes may have occurred, a greater use of qualitative sources has been encouraged in marine historical ecology. We examined diverse historical information (including maritime history, fisheries reports, naturalists' accounts, recipes, nautical charts and newspapers) across a multi‐century time span (13th–20th century) for a wide range of species to document their long‐term trajectories in an understudied Northeast Atlantic ecosystem (Irish Sea coast of Wales). We find strong evidence of the loss of both a pelagic fishery for herring, which was of fundamental socio‐ecological importance since at least the 13th century, and the loss of significant multi‐species demersal and intertidal fisheries. Local, commercial and/or functional extinction has occurred for taxa spanning a wide range of diversity (crustacean, elasmobranchs, sturgeon, and teleosts), body size and ecological role, suggesting far‐reaching changes to food webs. This raises fundamental questions about the present‐day health and integrity of this coastal ecosystem and the long‐term viability of current fisheries which depend on a few shellfish species. Our century‐scale synthesis of qualitative data for multiple taxa allows the collective breadth of losses to be fully appreciated and may reduce the risk of 'shifting baselines'. Restoration to historical baselines may not be achievable, but our findings provide evidence of long‐term change relevant to policies for recovery, and prevention of further decline of fishes, fisheries and ecosystems.

Chronic fishing disturbance has changed shelf sea benthic community structure

Abstract:1. Bottom fishing using towed nets and dredges is one of the most widespread sources of physical disturbance to the continental shelf seas throughout the world. Previous studies suggest that degradation and ecosystem changes have occurred in intensively fished areas. Nevertheless, to date it has been difficult to attribute habitat and benthic community changes to fishing effort at a spatial scale that is truly representative of commercial fishing activities. 2. In this study we present convincing evidence that chronic bottom‐fishing disturbance has caused significant and widespread changes in the structure of two distinct soft‐sediment benthic assemblages and habitats. 3. Our study compared the benthic fauna found in areas that have been exposed to either high or low levels of bottom‐fishing disturbance over the past 10 years. We were able to validate the fishing effort data in some areas using scars in the shells of a long‐lived bivalve mollusc (Glycymeris glycymeris) which result from fishing disturbance. Shell scars occurred most frequently in bivalves collected from the area of highest fishing effort. 4. Multivariate analyses and the response of abundance/biomass curves indicated that chronic fishing has caused a shift from communities dominated by relatively sessile, emergent, high biomass species to communities dominated by infaunal, smaller‐bodied fauna. Removal of emergent fauna has thus degraded the topographic complexity of seabed habitats in areas of high fishing effort. The communities within these areas currently may be in an alternative stable state.

Long-Term Changes in the Distributions of Larval and Adult Fish in the Northeast U.S. Shelf Ecosystem

Abstract:Many studies have documented long-term changes in adult marine fish distributions and linked these changes to climate change and multi-decadal climate variability. Most marine fish, however, have complex life histories with morphologically distinct stages, which use different habitats. Shifts in distribution of one stage may affect the connectivity between life stages and thereby impact population processes including spawning and recruitment. Specifically, many marine fish species have a planktonic larval stage, which lasts from weeks to months. We compared the spatial distribution and seasonal occurrence of larval fish in the Northeast U.S. Shelf Ecosystem to test whether spatial and temporal distributions changed between two decades. Two large-scale ichthyoplankton programs sampled using similar methods and spatial domain each decade. Adult distributions from a long-term bottom trawl survey over the same time period and spatial area were also analyzed using the same analytical framework to compare changes in larval and adult distributions between the two decades. Changes in spatial distribution of larvae occurred for 43% of taxa, with shifts predominately northward (i.e., along-shelf). Timing of larval occurrence shifted for 49% of the larval taxa, with shifts evenly split between occurring earlier and later in the season. Where both larvae and adults of the same species were analyzed, 48% exhibited different shifts between larval and adult stages. Overall, these results demonstrate that larval fish distributions are changing in the ecosystem. The spatial changes are largely consistent with expectations from a changing climate. The temporal changes are more complex, indicating we need a better understanding of reproductive timing of fishes in the ecosystem. These changes may impact population productivity through changes in life history connectivity and recruitment, and add to the accumulating evidence for changes in the Northeast U.S. Shelf Ecosystem with potential to impact fisheries and other ecosystem services.

Rapid worldwide depletion of predatory fish communities

Abstract:Serious concerns have been raised about the ecological effects of industrialized fishing1,2,3, spurring a United Nations resolution on restoring fisheries and marine ecosystems to healthy levels4. However, a prerequisite for restoration is a general understanding of the composition and abundance of unexploited fish communities, relative to contemporary ones. We constructed trajectories of community biomass and composition of large predatory fishes in four continental shelf and nine oceanic systems, using all available data from the beginning of exploitation. Industrialized fisheries typically reduced community biomass by 80% within 15 years of exploitation. Compensatory increases in fast-growing species were observed, but often reversed within a decade. Using a meta-analytic approach, we estimate that large predatory fish biomass today is only about 10% of pre-industrial levels. We conclude that declines of large predators in coastal regions5 have extended throughout the global ocean, with potentially serious consequences for ecosystems5,6,7. Our analysis suggests that management based on recent data alone may be misleading, and provides minimum estimates for unexploited communities, which could serve as the ‘missing baseline’8 needed for future restoration efforts.

Isotopic and biochemical trophic markers reveal the complexity of interactions at the base of pelagic food webs (Mediterranean sea)

Abstract:To gain insight into the impact of bottom-up changes in the plankton community on planktivorous fish in the context of the decline of small pelagic fisheries in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea, we have conducted an extensive year-long study. The investigation combined biochemical analyses (proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids) with C and N stable isotope analyses (SIA) to simultaneously study phytoplankton, zooplankton, and eight planktivorous fish species (Engraulis encrasicolus, Sardina pilchardus, Sardinella aurita, Sprattus sprattus, Cepola macrophthalma, Chromis chromis, Boops boops, and Spicara maena). This study is the first to analyze both stable isotope and biochemical compositions in coastal particulate organic matter (POM) size classes (0.7-2.7 μm, 2.7-20 μm, and 20-200 μm), zooplankton size classes (200-300 μm, 300-500 μm, 500-1000 μm, 1000-2000 μm, and >2000 μm), and taxonomic groups. We demonstrated that: (1) POM stable isotope compositions varied based on its spatial origin, the taxonomic composition of its biota, and its biochemical content; (2) δ15N values increased with zooplankton size classes and groups, indicating different trophic levels; (3) Phytoplankton exhibited a lipid-rich composition (∼55%), while zooplankton and fish muscles were protein-rich (∼61% and ∼66%, respectively). Bayesian stable isotope mixing models revealed that, on average: (1) POM from oceanic waters contributed the most to the POM in the bay (>51%), with a dominance of pico-POM (∼43%); (2) The 200-1000 μm zooplankton primarily consumed nano-POM, the 1000-2000 μm zooplankton mostly consumed micro-POM (∼64%), and the >2000 μm zooplankton also mostly consumed micro-POM; (3) Mesozooplankton (200-2000 μm) constituted the main portion (∼42%) of the diet for planktivorous fish species, while macrozooplankton organisms (>2000 μm) were the primary food resource (∼43%) for both B. boops and S. sprattus. Our study underscores the complexity of the pelagic food web and highlights the bottom-up transfer of organic matter from the smallest phytoplankton size fractions to planktivorous fish.
Impacts of estuarine habitat degradation on the modeled life history of marine estuarine-dependent and resident fish species

Abstract:Shallow coastal and estuarine habitats play an essential role in the life cycles of many fish species, providing spawning, nursery, feeding, and migration areas. However, these ecologically valuable habitats are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic activities, causing substantial changes in both habitat availability and quality. Fish species use these shallow coastal habitats and estuaries during various life stages, leading to their categorization into guilds based on how and when they rely on these areas. This differential functional use of estuaries means that changes to these habitats may affect each guild differently. To understand the impact of estuarine habitat degradation on fish populations, it is therefore necessary to consider the full life cycle of fish and when they rely on these coastal habitats. Here, we use conceptual size-structured population models to study how estuarine habitat degradation affects two functionally different guilds. We use these models to predict how reduced food productivity in the estuary affects the demographic rates and population dynamics of these groups. Specifically, we model estuarine residents, which complete their entire life cycle in estuaries, and marine estuarine-dependent species, which inhabit estuaries during early life before transitioning offshore. We find that total fish biomass for both guilds decreases with decreasing food productivity. However, the density of juveniles of the marine estuarine-dependent guild can, under certain conditions, increase in the estuary. This occurs due to a shift in the population biomass distribution over different life stages and a simultaneous shift in which life stage is most limited by food. At the individual level, somatic growth of juveniles belonging to the estuarine-dependent guild decreased with lower food supply in the estuary, due to increased competition for food. The somatic growth rates of fish belonging to the resident guild were largely unaffected by low food supply, as the total fish density decreased at the same time and therefore the per-capita food availability was similar. These outcomes challenge the assumption that responses to habitat degradation are similar between fish guilds. Our study highlights the need to assess not only fish biomass but also size distributions, survival, and somatic growth rates for a comprehensive understanding of the effects of habitat degradation on fish populations. This understanding is crucial not only for estuary fish communities but also for successful conservation and management of commercially harvested offshore population components.
Unveiling seasonal changes in trophic structure of fishery community in the offshore waters of southern Zhejiang Province of China: Insights from stable isotope analysis

Abstract:Understanding an ecosystem's trophic structure is essential for determining the dynamic interplay between natural and human-induced changes. However, limited knowledge of local food web structures, especially the seasonal trophic structure, hinders our understanding of ecosystem' stability and dynamics. The offshore waters of southern Zhejiang Province of China are amongst the important fishing waters in China, which are undergoing multiple stressors, such as over-exploitation, global warming, and acidification. This study investigated the seasonal changes in the trophic structure and trophic spectrum of fishery community in this region based on δ 13 C–δ 15 N isotope metrics and identified the key types of organisms determining the stability of food webs in different seasons. The results showed that the trophic structure in summer significantly diverged from those of other seasons, with benthivorous fish predominating, higher trophic positions, and feeding specialization of predators. The lowest trophic level and length of the trophic spectrum were observed in spring and were is attribute to the generally smaller size of the species in the community. The winter community showed maximal resource occupancy but the lowest trophic redundancy due to specialized top predators, suggesting higher vulnerability to disturbance. Based on the bi-plot of δ 13 C–δ 15 N isotope values, it can be found that Planktivorous and benthivorous fish occupy a key position in the food web structure. Seasonal fluctuations in the trophic structure of fishery community illustrated the diversity and complexity of food webs, and our study provided insights for characterizing marine ecological processes, which were conducive to the restoration of offshore fisheries and the development of management strategies.

Abstract:This article evaluates the nutritional status and development stages of seven different spatio‐temporal models. The modeling conclusions are biologically reasonable, and can provide an effective tool for analyzing the structure and evolution of ecosystems and testing the nutritional effects of different species, and provide a basis for further research on management in the future. The biological and ecological integrity of marine ecosystems in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) has been compromised due to overfishing and water pollution. Fishing moratorium and artificial reef construction have been implemented in Wanshan and Miaowan for resource protection and restoration. Therefore, food web structure and trophic pathways of Wanshan, Miaowan, and Wailingding in different temporal and spatial situation will be determined using the Ecopath model, as well as the keystone species affecting these ecosystems, which can provide a basis for fishery management. The results showed that the energy transfer efficiency of IV and V trophic levels (TL) was higher than that of II and III‐TL before and after fishing moratorium, and the energy transfer efficiency of artificial reefs II and III‐TL was only slightly higher than that of nonartificial reefs in Wanshan. In addition, the mean values of ecosystem property indicators (consumption, respiration flow, total system throughput, and total biomass) after the fishing moratorium were significantly higher than those before the fishing moratorium. The average value of the ecosystem attribute indicators (consumption, respiration flow, total system throughput, and total biomass) of artificial reefs is lower than those of nonartificial reef areas, which may be related to the differences in community composition between artificial reefs and non‐artificial reefs. Finally, Nemipterus japonicus and Gastrophysus spadiceus are keystone species that distinguish the Wanshan and Miaowan artificial reefs from other areas. Overall, the fishing moratorium has a positive effect on the short‐term restoration of fishery resources, mainly restoring short‐life cycle organisms. However, the construction of artificial reefs will be more conducive to the persistence of ecosystem restoration. Modification of marine habitats by trawling activities: prognosis and solutions

Abstract:Fishing affects the seabed habitat worldwide on the continental shelf. These impacts are patchily distributed according to the spatial and temporal variation in fishing effort that results from fishers' behaviour. As a consequence, the frequency and intensity of fishing disturbance varies among different habitat types. Different fishing methodologies vary in the degree to which they affect the seabed. Structurally complex habitats (e.g. seagrass meadows, biogenic reefs) and those that are relatively undisturbed by natural perturbations (e.g. deep‐water mud substrata) are more adversely affected by fishing than unconsolidated sediment habitats that occur in shallow coastal waters. These habitats also have the longest recovery trajectories in terms of the recolonization of the habitat by the associated fauna. Comparative studies of areas of the seabed that have experienced different levels of fishing activity demonstrate that chronic fishing disturbance leads to the removal of high‐biomass species that are composed mostly of emergent seabed organisms. Contrary to the belief of fishers that fishing enhances seabed production and generates food for target fish species, productivity is actually lowered as fishing intensity increases and high‐biomass species are removed from the benthic habitat. These organisms also increase the topographic complexity of the seabed which has been shown to provide shelter for juvenile fishes, reducing their vulnerability to predation. Conversely, scavengers and small‐bodied organisms, such as polychaete worms, dominate heavily fished areas. Major changes in habitat can lead to changes in the composition of the resident fish fauna. Fishing has indirect effects on habitat through the removal of predators that control bio‐engineering organisms such as algal‐grazing urchins. Fishing gear resuspend the upper layers of sedimentary seabed habitats and hence remobilize contaminants and fine particulate matter into the water column. The ecological significance of these fishing effects has not yet been determined but could have implications for eutrophication and biogeochemical cycling. Simulation results suggest that the effects of low levels of trawling disturbance will be similar to those of natural bioturbators. In contrast, high levels of trawling disturbance cause sediment systems to become unstable due to large carbon fluxes between oxic and anoxic carbon compartments. In low energy habitats, intensive trawling disturbance may destabilize benthic system chemical fluxes, which has the potential to propagate more widely through the marine ecosystem. Management regimes that aim to incorporate both fisheries and habitat conservation objectives can be achieved through the appropriate use of a number of approaches, including total and partial exclusion of towed bottom fishing gears, and seasonal and rotational closure techniques. However, the inappropriate use of closed areas may displace fishing activities into habitats that are more vulnerable to disturbance than those currently trawled by fishers. In many cases, the behaviour of fishers constrains the extent of the impact of their fishing activities. Management actions that force them to redistribute their effort may be more damaging in the longer term.

Abstract:The Anthropocene is marked by profound changes in biodiversity and the ecosystems in which species live. A primary signature of this change is the often rapid change in species composition through time (i.e., species turnover) rather than changes in the numbers of species per se. Less well known, however, is which types of species are winning and which are losing as ecosystems change through time, as well as whether and how these changes influence higher-level processes in the food webs in which species are embedded. Here, we combine a compilation of long-term observations of ~15,000 freshwater and marine fish communities surveyed for 1949-2019 years, together with information about their diets and trophic status in order to evaluate how the food webs in which these fish communities are embedded are changing through time. We found widespread alteration to fish food web topology and functioning. This includes an increase in connectance and generalism in food webs, which has led to greater predation pressure, as indicated by higher diet overlap and increased prey vulnerability. We also identified a decrease in modularity, which has reduced the compartmentalization within local networks. These changes extend across the trophic structure of food webs, causing a cascading shift in the proportion of species across trophic levels. Our study highlights the complex responses of biodiversity change of fish food webs in the Anthropocene, which can ultimately influence the functions of these ecosystems and human well-being.

Tidal Flushing Rather Than Non-Point Source Nitrogen Pollution Drives Nutrient Dynamics in A Putatively Eutrophic Estuary

Abstract:The effects of nonpoint source nutrients on estuaries can be difficult to pinpoint, with researchers often using indicator species, monitoring, and models to detect influence and change. Here, we made stable isotope measurements of nitrogen and carbon in sediment, water column particulates, primary producers, and consumers at 35 stations in the reportedly eutrophic Barnegat Bay (New Jersey) to assess N sources and processing pathways. Combined with water quality and hydrological data, our C and N isoscapes revealed four distinct geographic zones with diverging isotopic baselines, indicating variable nutrient sources and processing pathways. Overall, the carbon stable isotopes δ13C) reflected the terrestrial-marine gradient with the most depleted values in the urban and poorly flushed north of the estuary to the most enriched values in the salt marsh-dominated south. In contrast, the nitrogen stable isotope values δ15N) were most enriched near the oceanic inlets and were consistent with offshore δ15N values in particulate organic matter. Several biogeochemical processes likely alter δ15N, but the relatively lower δ15N values associated with the most urbanized area indicate that anthropogenic runoff is not a dominant N source to this area. Our findings stand in contrast to previous studies of similar estuaries, as δ15N signatures of biota in this system are inversely correlated to population density and nutrient concentrations. Further, our analyses of archival plant (Spartina sp., Phragmites australis) and shell (Geukensia demissa, Ilyanassa obsoleta) samples collected between 1880 and 2020 indicated that δ15N values have decreased over time, particularly in the consumers. Overall, we find that water quality issues appear to be most acute in the poorly flushed parts of Barnegat Bay and emphasize the important role that oceanic exchange plays in water quality and associated estuarine food webs in the lagoon.

Abstract:Background: Assessing the historical dynamics of key food web components is crucial to understand how climate change impacts the structure of Arctic marine ecosystems. Most retrospective stable isotopic studies to date assessed potential ecosystem shifts in the Arctic using vertebrate top predators and filter-feeding invertebrates as proxies. However, due to long life histories and specific ecologies, ecosystem shifts are not always detectable when using these taxa. Moreover, there are currently no retrospective stable isotopic studies on various other ecological and taxonomic groups of Arctic biota. To test whether climate-driven shifts in marine ecosystems are reflected in the ecology of short-living mesopredators, ontogenetic changes in stable isotope signatures in chitinous hard body structures were analysed in two abundant squids (Gonatus fabricii and Todarodes sagittatus) from the low latitude Arctic and adjacent waters, collected between 1844 and 2023. Results: We detected a temporal increase in diet and habitat-use generalism (= opportunistic choice rather than specialization), trophic position and niche width in G. fabricii from the low latitude Arctic waters. These shifts in trophic ecology matched with the Atlantification of the Arctic ecosystems, which includes increased generalization of food webs and higher primary production, and the influx of boreal species from the North Atlantic as a result of climate change. The Atlantification is especially marked since the late 1990s/early 2000s. The temporal patterns we found in G. fabricii's trophic ecology were largely unreported in previous Arctic retrospective isotopic ecology studies. Accordingly, T. sagittatus that occur nowadays in the high latitude North Atlantic have a more generalist diet than in the XIXth century. Conclusions: Our results suggest that abundant opportunistic mesopredators with short life cycles (such as squids) are good candidates for retrospective ecology studies in the marine ecosystems, and to identify ecosystem shifts driven by climate change. Enhanced generalization of Arctic food webs is reflected in increased diet generalism and niche width in squids, while increased abundance of boreal piscivorous fishes is reflected in squids' increased trophic position. These findings support opportunism and adaptability in squids, which renders them as potential winners of short-term shifts in Arctic ecosystems.

Abstract:Non-native predatory fish strongly impact aquatic communities, and their impacts can be exacerbated by anthropogenic habitat alterations. Loss of natural habitat and restoration actions reversing habitat loss can modify relationships between non-native predators and prey. Abstract:Under climate change, model ensembles suggest that declines in phytoplankton biomass amplify into greater reductions at higher trophic levels, with serious implications for fisheries and carbon storage. However, the extent and mechanisms of this trophic amplification vary greatly among models, and validation is problematic. In situ size spectra offer a novel alternative, comparing biomass of small and larger organisms to quantify the net efficiency of energy transfer through natural food webs that are already challenged with multiple climate change stressors. Our global compilation of pelagic size spectrum slopes supports trophic amplification empirically, independently from model simulations. Thus, even a modest (16%) decline in phytoplankton this century would magnify into a 38% decline in supportable biomass of fish within the intensively-fished mid-latitude ocean. We also show that this amplification stems not from thermal controls on consumers, but mainly from temperature or nutrient controls that structure the phytoplankton baseline of the food web. The lack of evidence for direct thermal effects on size structure contrasts with most current thinking, based often on more acute stress experiments or shorter-timescale responses. Our synthesis of size spectra integrates these short-term dynamics, revealing the net efficiency of food webs acclimating and adapting to climatic stressors.

Abstract:Demersal fisheries are one of the top anthropic stressors in marine environments. In the long term, some species are more vulnerable to fishery impacts than others, which can lead to permanent changes on the food web. The trophic relationships between predator and prey constitute the food web and it represents a network of the energy channels in an ecosystem. In turn, the network structure influences ecosystem diversity and stability. The first aim of this study was to describe for the first time the food web of the San Jorge Gulf (Patagonia Argentina) with high resolution, i.e. to the species level when information is available. The San Jorge Gulf was subject to intense fisheries thus our second aim is to analyse the food web structure with and without fishery to evaluate if the bottom-trawl industrial fishery altered the network structure and stability. We used several network metrics like: mean trophic level, omnivory, modularity and quasi-sign stability. We included these metrics because they are related to stability and can be evaluated using predator diets that can weight the links between predators and prey. The network presented 165 species organized in almost five trophic levels. The inclusion of a fishery node adds 69 new trophic links. All weighted and unweighted metrics showed differences between the two networks, reflecting a decrease in stability when fishery was included in the system. Thus, our results suggested a probable change of state of the system. The observed changes in species abundances since the fishery was established, could represent the state change predicted by network analysis. Our results suggests that changes in the stability of food webs can be used to evaluate the impacts of human activity on ecosystems.
