Abstract:The recent experiment results during electron cyclotron resonance hearing (ECRH) on HL-2A tokamak are presented in this paper. During ECRH with a series of the supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) pulse fueling, the plasma storage energy WE, D p, line averaged density n(e) and "fusion neutron" count increase, leading to the plasma confinement improved. Furthermore, the non-local transport phenomena induced by SMBI have been firstly observed in HL-2A tokamak. The non-local effect induced by SMBI in HL-2A lasts much longer than that induced by pellet injection in other similar size tokamak, both the bolometer radiation and the Ha emission decrease when the non-local effect appears. It indicates that an electron transport barrier has possibly been formed at the position just outside the q = 1 surface during this phase. In addition, the delayed core soft x-ray intensity decrease has been observed after ECRH switch-off, while the edge soft X-ray intensity decreases just after the ECRH switch off. The study shows transport coefficient reduces at all radii just after the off-axis ECRH switch off especially near the heating deposition location, Moreover, various types of sawteeth activities during ECRH experiment are investigated, and the relationship between the sawtooth period and the power deposition location has been studied.

Abstract:The internal kink (fishbone) modes, driven by barely passing energetic ions (EIs), are numerically studied with the spatial distribution of the EIs taking into account. It is found that the modes with frequencies comparable to the toroidal precession frequencies are excited by resonant interaction with the EIs. Positive and negative density gradient dominating cases, corresponding to off- and near-axis depositions of neutral beam injection (NBI), respectively, are analyzed in detail. The most interesting and important feature of the modes is that there exists a second stable regime in higher βh (=pressure of EIs/toroidal magnetic pressure) range, and the modes may only be excited by the barely passing EIs in a region of βth1<βh<βth2 (βth is threshold or critical beta of EIs). Abstract:Experiments to study inward heat transport phenomena have been performed in the Tore Supra tokamak with off-axis electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH). Both power balance and perturbation transport analysis have been done for low-frequency (1 Hz) ECRH modulation experiments. Heat diffusivity and heat pinch have been separately determined by fitting the experimental data of the amplitude and phase of the Fourier transform of the modulated temperature with a linear transport model including convection term. Comparison with the critical gradient model has shown that the heat pinch previously obtained could include a pseudo-pinch due to the non-linearity of the diffusivity and an additional non-diffusive heat pinch. The pinch effect is reduced for higher densities.

Abstract:A uniform nonlinear resonant condition for interaction between electrostatic wave and charged particles in a uniform magnetic field is given by multi-scale expansion. It is verified by numerical simulation. It is shown that resonant heating can be produced by electrostatic wave with sub-harmonic frequency of the cyclotron. Moreover, it is shown that the heating efficiency does not increase with the amplitude of driving wave even if for the same frequency, which means there is an optimum combination of frequency and amplitude to get efficient heating.

Abstract:Electron transport in burning plasmas is more important since fusion products first heat electrons. First-principles simulations of electron turbulence are much more challenging due to the multi-scale dynamics of the electron turbulence, and have been made possible by close collaborations between plasma physicists and computational scientists. The GTC simulations of collisionless trapped electron mode (CTEM) turbulence show that the electron heat transport exhibits a gradual transition from Bohm to gyroBohm scaling when the device size is increased. The deviation from the gyroBohm scaling can be induced by large turbulence eddies, turbulence spreading, and non-diffusive transport processes. Analysis of radial correlation function shows that CTEM turbulence eddies are predominantly microscopic but with a significant tail in the mesoscale. A comprehensive analysis of kinetic and fluid time scales shows that zonal flow shearing is the dominant decorrelation mechanism. The mesoscale eddies result from a dynamical process of linear streamers breaking by zonal flows and merging of microscopic eddies. The radial profile of the electron heat conductivity only follows the profile of fluctuation intensity on a global scale, whereas the ion transport tracks more sensitively the local fluctuation intensity. This suggests the existence of a nondiffusive component in the electron heat flux, which arises from the ballistic radial E X B drift of trapped electrons due to a combination of the presence of mesoscale eddies and the weak de-tuning of the toroidal precessional resonance that drives the CTEM instability. On the other hand, the ion radial excursion is not affected by the mesoscale eddies due to a parallel decorrelation, which is not operational for the trapped electrons because of a bounce averaging process associated with the electron fast motion along magnetic field lines. The presence of the nondiffusive component raises question on the applicability of the usual quasilinear theory for the CTEM electron transport. This is in contrast to the good agreement between the quasilinear transport theory and simulation results of the electron heat transport in electron temperature gradient (ETG) turbulence, which is regulated by a wave-particle decorrelation. Therefore, the transport in the CTEM turbulence is a fluid-like eddy mixing process even though the linear CTEM instability is driven by a kinetic resonance. In contrast, a kinetic process dominates the transport in the ETG turbulence, which is characterized by macroscopic streamers.

Abstract:Extra Ordinary (X) mode conversion to Bernstein wave near Upper Hybrid Resonance (UHR) layer plays an important role in plasma heating through cyclotron resonance. Wave generation at UHR and parametric decay at high power has been observed during Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) heating experiments in toroidal magnetic fusion devices. A small linear system with ECR and UHR layer within the system has been used to conduct experiments on X-B conversion and parametric decay process as a function of system parameters. Direct probing {\em in situ} is conducted and plasma heating is evidenced by soft x-ray emission measurement. Experiments are performed with hydrogen plasma produced with 160-800 W microwave power at 2.45 GHz of operating frequency at $10^{-3}$ mbar pressure. The axial magnetic field required for ECR is such that the resonant surface (B = 875 G) is situated at the geometrical axis of the plasma system. Experimental results will be presented in the paper.

Abstract:Experimental observations and theoretical interpretations are presented in detail for the high frequency axisymmetric mode driven by nonlinear mode coupling. In the neutral beam injection heating plasma, toroidal Alfven eigenmodes (TAEs) are found to nonlinearly interact with the tearing mode and result in the generation of other Alfvenic sidebands (Chen et al 2014 Europhys. Lett. 107 25001). Then two TAEs couple together and contribute to the excitation of an axisymmetric mode with frequency in the ellipticity-induced Alfven eigenmode (EAE) frequency region. Direct evidence suggests the axisymmetric modes play an energy transfer channel role during the nonlinear procedure and cause the growth of magnetohydrodynamic instability with finite toroidal mode number via beating with tearing mode. Finally, the nonlinear process leading to high frequency n(E) = 0 mode generation is demonstrated using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory. Here n(E) is toroidal mode number and the subscript E represents the mode frequencies lying in the EAE frequency range.
Coupled Mode Effects on Energy Transfer Rates in Two Temperature Plasmas

Abstract:We investigate the effects of collective modes on the temperature relaxation rates in fully coupled electron-ion systems. Firstly, the well-understood limit of weakly coupled plasmas is considered and the coupled mode formula within the random phase approximation is derived starting from the Lenard-Balescu kinetic equation. We show how the frequency integration can be performed by standard methods without applying additional approximations. Due to the well-defined approximation scheme, the results can serve as a benchmark for more approximate theories and numerical simulations in this limit. The coupled mode electron-ion transfer rates show a considerable reduction compared to the Fermi-Golden Rule approach for certain parameters and very small changes for other systems. We demonstrate how these coupled mode effects are connected to the occurrence of ion acoustic modes and under which conditions they occur. Interestingly, coupled mode effects can also occur for plasmas with very high electron temperatures; a regime, where the Landau-Spitzer approach is believed to give accurate results. Finally, we extend the approach to systems with strongly coupled ions by applying static local field corrections. This extension can substantially increase the coupled mode effects.

Abstract:Abstract Electron–cyclotron waves are a tool commonly used in tokamaks, in particular to drive current. Their ability to drive current in a very localized manner renders them an optimal tool for MHD mode mitigation. However, such applications require high accuracy and good control of the power deposition location to efficiently target the magnetic islands. It has been indirectly observed that the suprathermal electron distribution, resulting from the wave absorption, is broader than what is expected from experimentally-constrained forward drift-kinetic modeling. The present paper explores the possibility that beam scattering through the turbulent edge of the plasma may explain this observed discrepancy. In particular, full-wave studies exhibit three beam broadening regimes, from superdiffusive to diffusive, with an intermediate regime characterized by a Lorentzian beam profile with a slightly increased full-width at half maximum with respect to the quiet plasma case. In the tokamak à configuration variable, dedicated plasma scenarios have been developed to test this hypothesis. A realistic worst-case fluctuation scenario falls into this intermediate beam broadening regime. By comparing the experimental hard x-ray emission from suprathermal electron Bremmstrahlung with the emission calculated by coupling a full-wave model to a Fokker–Planck solver, it is shown that, in the tested cases, the beam broadening is not sufficient to explain the aforementioned discrepancy between simulation and experiment and that another mechanism must play the main role in broadening the suprathermal electron distribution.

Abstract:In this letter, the new phenomena about the multi-mode coexistence driven by energetic electrons are presented. The evolutions of the magnetic fluctuations observed by means of Mirnov coils and soft x-ray arrays show that two or three modes appear during the high power ECRH both with on-axis and off-axis deposition. The modes located in the region outside 0.5 of the normalized minor radius and they are proved to be related with the energetic electrons strongly. The mode numbers are m/n=3/1, 6-5/2 and 4/1-, respectively. The frequencies of the modes are much lower than toroidal Alfv ́en eigenmode. The frequencies are also increase with the electron temperature, when ion temperature keeps a constant. The frequency spectra are broadening and overlap each other, when the ECRH power high enough. No obvious nonlinear interaction between the modes and the other low frequency MHD mode occurs in high power ECRH plasma. To study the interaction of the energetic particles with collective modes, including the toroidal Alfv ́en eigenmode (TAE) and the energetic particle modes (EPM), is very important for the burning plasmas. These instabilities excited by fast ions from high power heating or fusion reaction. The drive for these modes depends on the energy of the particles rather than the mass so that energetic electrons can also drive these unstable modes. Understanding the interaction between the energetic-electrons and these modes can provide a contribution for burning plasma research, because their effect on low-frequency MHD modes can be used to simulate and analyze the alpha particles characterized by small dimensionless orbits, which are similar to energetic-electrons in the middle size tokamak plasma . The interaction of the energetic electrons with collective modes may play an important role in the plasma with high electron temperature and low collisionality in fusion reactor. Indeed, the precessional drift resonance was first described for fast electrons . Fast electron driven TAEs were first seen on Compass-D with electron cyclotron heating (ECH) [3] and on Alcator C-mod with lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) . Abstract:We study the dispersion relation for low frequency electromagnetic waves propagating along the ambient magnetic field and investigate the possibility of occurrence of coupling between waves in the ion cyclotron branch and waves in the whistler branch. The results obtained show that the coupling may occur in the case of conditions leading to the ion cyclotron instability, for sufficiently high value of the ratio between perpendicular and parallel ion temperature, and does not occur in the case of conditions leading to the ion firehose instability. The results also show that the decrease in the value of the plasma beta may lead to the disappearance of the mode coupling conditions. Regarding the effect of the electron population, it is shown that the change in the shape of the electron velocity distribution, from Maxwellian to bi-Kappa form, does not change the results obtained, as long as the electron temperatures are isotropic, but the increase in anisotropy in the electron temperatures may lead to the disappearance of the coupling between the different waves. The consequences of the frequency dependency of the mode coupling conditions are discussed considering wave propagation in an inhomogeneous medium, leading to the conclusion that the energy of a packet of waves of a given mode can be absorbed or mode converted over an extended region of space. These findings can be of relevance for the analysis and understanding of processes related to the conversion between ion cyclotron waves and whistler waves.

Abstract:Plasma parameter profiles along the effective minor radius of flux surfaces are modeled for the conditions with neon impurity puffing and external resonant magnetic perturbations at the plasma edge in the large helical device. For the electron cyclotron heating scenario, calculations qualitatively reproduce stable steady states with plasma detached from divertor target plates and radiation losses exceeding 90% of the heating power. It is unlikely with neutral beam injection heating that the plasma collapses if the radiation approaches a critical level noticeably below 100%. The latter is explained by the dependence of neutral beam attenuation on the plasma ion effective charge.

Abstract:The influence of collisions on the growth rate of trapped-electron modes (TEMs) in core plasmas is assessed through both analytical linear gyrokinetics and linear gyrokinetic simulations. Both methods are applied to the magnetic geometry of the DIII-D tokamak, as well as the Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX) and Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarators, in the absence of temperature gradients. Here we analytically investigate the influence of collisions on the TEM eigenmode frequency by a perturbative approach in the response of trapped particles to the mode, using an energy-dependent Krook operator to model collisions. Although the resulting growth rates exceed perturbative thresholds, they reveal important qualitative dependencies: a geometry-dependent stabilization rate occurs for all wavenumbers at high collisionality, while at low collisionality, a geometry-sensitive mixture of collisionless, resonantly driven, and collisionally destabilized modes is found. Additionally, linear gyrokinetic simulations have been performed with a rigorous pitch-angle scattering operator for the same geometries. In the case of DIII-D and large wavenumber modes in HSX, the trends predicted by analytical theory are reproduced. Dissimilarities are, however, obtained in W7-X geometry and for low wavenumber modes in HSX, which are shown to be due to a collision-induced transition to the Universal Instability as the dominant instability at marginal collisionality.

Abstract:Resonant heating of a magnetized plasma by low frequency waves of large amplitude is considered. It is shown that the magnetic moment can be changed nonadiabatically by a single large amplitude wave, even at frequencies normally considered nonresonant. Two examples clearly demonstrate the existence of the resonances leading to chaos and the generic nature of heating below the cyclotron frequency. First the classical case of an electrostatic wave of large amplitude propagating across a confining uniform magnetic field, and second a large amplitude Alfvén wave, propagating obliquely across the magnetic field. Waves with frequencies a small fraction of the cyclotron frequency are shown to produce significant heating; bringing, in the case of Alfvén waves, particles to speeds comparable to the Alfvén velocity in a few hundred cyclotron periods. Stochastic threshold for heating occurs at significantly lower amplitude with a perturbation spectrum consisting of a number of modes. This phenomenon may have relevance for the heating of ions in the solar corona as well as for ion heating in some toroidal confinement fusion devices.

Abstract:Off-axis sawtooth oscillations during the presence of nonlinear coupling between toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) and tearing mode are firstly observed in the plasma without two q = 2 rational surfaces on HL-2A tokamak. Those low frequency oscillations always take place followed by nonlinear interaction processes and the off-axis features have been confirmed by multiple diagnostics, such as soft x-ray arrays and electron cyclotron emission imaging systems. A possible physical mechanism is proposed for interpretation of those off-axis oscillations. That is, nonlinear interaction between TAEs and tearing mode causes significant losses of fast ions though the spacial overlapped global mode structure, then makes a drop in torque and leads to rotation braking or even mode locking. When magnetic fluctuation becomes large enough during braking or locking, the resulting high amplitude saturated mode leads to subsequent or immediate collapse at the q = 2 rational surface.
Predicting high harmonic ion cyclotron heating efficiency in Tokamak plasmas

Abstract:Observations of improved radio frequency (rf) heating efficiency in ITER relevant high-confinement (H-)mode plasmas on the National Spherical Tokamak Experiment are investigated by whole-device linear simulation. The steady-state rf electric field is calculated for various antenna spectra and the results examined for characteristics that correlate with observations of improved or reduced rf heating efficiency. We find that launching toroidal wave numbers that give fast-wave propagation in the scrape-off plasma excites large amplitude (∼kV m(-1)) coaxial standing modes between the confined plasma density pedestal and conducting vessel wall. Qualitative comparison with measurements of the stored plasma energy suggests that these modes are a probable cause of degraded heating efficiency.

Abstract:Abstract Ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) stands out as a widely utilized and cost-effective auxiliary method for plasma heating, bearing significant importance in achieving high-performance discharges in p-11B plasmas. In light of the specific context of p-11B plasma in the EHL-2 device, we conducted a comprehensive scan of the fundamental physical parameters of the antenna using the full-wave simulation program TORIC. Our preliminary research indicates that for p-11B plasma, optimal ion heating parameters include a frequency of 40 MHz, with a high toroidal mode number like Nφ =28 to heat majority H ions. Additionally, we discussed the impact of minority concentration variation on ion cyclotron resonance heating when 11B serves as the heavy species minority. The significant difference in charge-to-mass ratio between boron and hydrogen ions results in a considerable distance between the hybrid resonance layer and the cyclotron resonance layer, necessitating a quite low boron ion concentration to achieve effective minority heating. We also considers another method of directly heating hydrogen ions in the presence of boron ion minority. It is found that at appropriate boron ion concentrations (X( 11 B)=16%), the position of the hybrid resonance layer approaches that of the hydrogen ion cyclotron resonance layer, thereby altering the polarization at this position and significantly enhancing hydrogen ion fundamental absorption.

Abstract:The present work investigates electron transport and heating mechanisms using an (r, z) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation of a typical rf-driven axisymmetric magnetron discharge with a conducting target. It is shown that for the considered magnetic field topology the electron current flows through different channels in the (r, z) plane: a ``transverse'' one, which involves current flow through the electrons' magnetic confinement region (EMCR) above the racetrack, and two ''longitudinal'' ones. Electrons gain energy from the electric field along these channels following various mechanisms, which are rather distinct from those sustaining dc-powered magnetrons. The longitudinal power absorption involves mirror-effect heating (MEH), nonlinear electron resonance heating (NERH), magnetized bounce heating (MBH), and the heating by the ambipolar field at the sheath-presheath interface. The MEH and MBH represent two new mechanisms missing from the previous literature. The MEH is caused by a reversed electric field needed to overcome the mirror force generated in a nonuniform magnetic field to ensure sufficient flux of electrons to the powered electrode, and the MBH is related to a possibility for an electron to undergo multiple reflections from the expanding sheath in the longitudinal channels connected by the arc-like magnetic field. The electron heating in the transverse channel is caused mostly by the essentially collisionless Hall heating in the EMCR above the racetrack, generating a strong ExB azimuthal drift velocity. The latter mechanism results in an efficient electron energization, i.e., energy transfer from the electric field to electrons in the inelastic range. Since the main electron population energized by this mechanism remains confined within the discharge for a long time, its contribution to the ionization processes is dominant.

Abstract:A series of DIII-D [J. L. Luxon, Nucl. Fusion 42, 614 (2002)] low torque quiescent H-mode experiments show that density gradient driven trapped electron mode (DGTEM) turbulence dominates the inner core of H-mode plasmas during strong electron cyclotron heating (ECH). Adding 3.4 MW ECH doubles Te/Ti from 0.5 to 1.0, which halves the linear DGTEM critical density gradient, locally reducing density peaking, while transport in all channels displays extreme stiffness in the density gradient. This suggests that fusion α-heating may degrade inner core confinement in H-mode plasmas with moderate density peaking and low collisionality, with equal electron and ion temperatures, key conditions expected in burning plasmas. Gyrokinetic simulations using GYRO [J. Candy and R. E. Waltz, J. Comput. Phys. 186, 545 (2003)] (and GENE [Jenko et al., Phys. Plasmas 7, 1904 (2000)]) closely match not only particle, energy, and momentum fluxes but also density fluctuation spectra from Doppler backscattering (DBS), with and without ECH. Inner core DBS density fluctuations display discrete frequencies with adjacent toroidal mode numbers, which we identify as DGTEMs. GS2 [Dorland et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 5579 (2000)] predictions show the DGTEM can be suppressed, to avoid degradation with electron heating, by broadening the current density profile to attain q0>qmin>1.

Abstract:Non-inductive start-up and ramp-up is an important topic for spherical tokamak reactor design as the central solenoid implementation is highly restrictive particularly for the low-aspect-ratio tokamak configuration. In the high field spherical tokamak (ST), ST-40 with B_T0 ≤ 3T, a preparation is underway for high power ECH and ECCD current start-up/ramp-up experiments utilizing two MW-class 140/105 GHz gyrotrons. Here, we explored various ECH/ECCD scenarios for a low-field-side (LFS) launch-angle steerable waveguide launcher placed near the mid-plane region. Due to the large toroidal field variation of ST configuration, multiple cyclotron harmonic resonance layers could exist within the plasma. In this start-up and ramp-up regime, both fundamental and second harmonic ECH resonances must be considered. We find that even with the presence of X-II resonance layer in the plasma, an efficient X-I ECH and ECCD regime can be accessed for the low electron temperature T_e0 as low as 200 eV which is a typical starting temperature of ECH heated plasmas in an open-field-line configuration. The presence of X-II resonance could become significant at higher Te0 as X-II absorption increases with Te0 which could reduce the current ramp-up efficiency as the power reaching X-I is reduced. Finally for the pure X-I regime where the 2Ωe resonance is moved outside the plasma with B_T0 ~ 3.3T, we find that it is possible to reach the full current of Ip ~ 1 MA fully non-inductively with the ECH power of ~ 1 MW at ne0 ~ 8.0 x 1018/m3 using 105 GHz frequency gyrotron. By reducing the outer limiter position RL ~ 78 cm to 70 cm, the pure X-I regime is recovered. This regime is accessible with relatively broad range of launched n_(II )or the launching angles. A survey of X-mode X-II ECH and ECCD at higher density regimes is also shown for completeness.
