Abstract:By about 12 months of age, infants show sensitivity to mispronunciations of familiar words when asked to identify a referent. These findings indicate that infants are able to access the phonological detail of words when engaged in lexical recognition. However, most of this work has focused on mispronunciations of consonants and vowels. Very little is known about the role that lexical tones play in constraining lexical access during the early stages of lexical development. In tonal languages (e.g., Chinese), over and above vowel and consonant variations, words are distinguished by lexical tone. Over half the world’s population speak a tonal language. The current study aims to answer the question: Do Chinese infants treat tones as phonological information in their lexical representations as early as 12 months old? Using the intermodal preferential looking paradigm with the mispronunciation task, the current study examined whether Chinese infants at 12 months were sensitive to mispronunciations of lexical tones in monosyllabic, familiar words. 12 infants were in group1, 8 infants were in group2. For group 1, the familiar words were pronounced correctly in block1, while mispronounced with the falling tone in Mandarin (Tone 4) in block 2. The block order was reversed for the infants in group 2. The proportion of target look (PTL) and the difference between infants' longest look at target and distracter images (LLD) before and after naming were calculated. Systematic increment in PTL or LLD across pre- and post-naming phases indicates infants' association of the target label and object. The results showed that both groups of infants could associate the target labels and objects when the labels were correctly pronounced (PTL:group 1, t(11)=1.78, p=0.103;group 2, t(7)=2.95, p= 0.021), while the associations were not found when the labels were mispronounced (PTL: group 1, t(11) =?0.79, p = 0.45; group 2, t(7) = ?0.41, p = 0.70). In other words, the mispronunciation effects were found for both groups. But infants’ sensitivity to tonal mispronunciations was not influenced by their receptive vocabulary size. In conclusion, the results indicate that sufficient phonological information of tones is encoded by 12-month-old Chinese infants.
Auditory and speech processing and reading development in Chinese school children: behavioural and ERP evidence

Abstract:By measuring behavioural performance and event-related potentials (ERPs) this study investigated the extent to which Chinese school children's reading development is influenced by their skills in auditory, speech, and temporal processing. In Experiment 1, 102 normal school children's performance in pure tone temporal order judgment, tone frequency discrimination, temporal interval discrimination and composite tone pattern discrimination was measured. Results showed that children's auditory processing skills correlated significantly with their reading fluency, phonological awareness, word naming latency, and the number of Chinese characters learned. Regression analyses found that tone temporal order judgment, temporal interval discrimination and composite tone pattern discrimination could account for 32% of variance in phonological awareness. Controlling for the effect of phonological awareness, auditory processing measures still contributed significantly to variance in reading fluency and character naming. In Experiment 2, mismatch negativities (MMN) in event-related brain potentials were recorded from dyslexic children and the matched normal children, while these children listened passively to Chinese syllables and auditory stimuli composed of pure tones. The two groups of children did not differ in MMN to stimuli deviated in pure tone frequency and Chinese lexical tones. But dyslexic children showed smaller MMN to stimuli deviated in initial consonants or vowels of Chinese syllables and to stimuli deviated in temporal information of composite tone patterns. These results suggested that Chinese dyslexic children have deficits in auditory temporal processing as well as in linguistic processing and that auditory and temporal processing is possibly as important to reading development of children in a logographic writing system as in an alphabetic system.

Low prevalence of anemia in inflammatory bowel disease: A population-based study in Sweden

Abstract:Abstract Objective. Anemia is a well-known complication of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with a reported prevalence of 8.8–73.7%. However, knowledge is sparse about the anemia prevalence in a population-based cohort of patients affected by IBD. Materials and methods. The aim of this retrospective, descriptive, population-based study was to determine and analyze the prevalence of anemia for ambulatory (n = 485) as well as for hospitalized patients diagnosed with IBD in 2008 in the Highland Health Care District, Jönköpings County, Sweden. Results. The prevalence of anemia at the annual follow-up in the studied IBD population was 6%, 5% for patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), and 9% for those with Crohn's disease (CD). There was a higher rate of anemia at the yearly check up in patients requiring inpatient care during the year. IBD patients, prescribed anti-TNF-α treatment, had a higher rate of anemia. Of the hospitalized UC and CD patients (n = 31), 35% and 50%, respectively, had anemia at admission and 6% and 4% had severe anemia (Hb <100 g/L), respectively. Conclusions. The prevalence of anemia in this population was lower than reported previously, probably due to inclusion of all IBD patients in the area in combination with a proactive follow-up model. The prevalence of anemia in this IBD population was similar to the prevalence in the general population. This may indicate that efforts by health care professionals to prevent, identify, and treat anemia in the IBD population have been successful.

Abstract:Musical pitch perception is closely related to phonological awareness and reading development in alphabetic languages. However, whether such a relation also exists in tonal languages such as Chinese remains unclear. Here, we examined the musical pitch—reading relations and the possible mediating effects of phonological awareness in a sample of typically-developing Chinese children followed from Grade 3 (age 9) to Grade 5 (age 11). Phonological awareness and reading (accuracy and fluency) were assessed at both time points. Musical pitch perception was examined with a passive oddball EEG paradigm and an active identification task at age 9. Results showed that neural musical pitch sensitivity (indexed by P3a latency) predicted reading accuracy at age 11 and its two-year development. Behavioral musical pitch sensitivity predicted reading fluency at both ages through the effects of phonological awareness. Together, our results reveal the effects of musical pitch processing on reading development at both behavioral and neural levels in Chinese.

Abstract:Word identification models assume that words are identified by at least two sources of information and analysis; one is phonological, and the other is visual. The present study investigated the influence of phonological awareness, Pinyin letter knowledge, and visual perception skills on Chinese character recognition after controlling for vocabulary, rapid naming, and verbal short-term memory in 80 Mandarin-speaking kindergarten children. Children were tested on phonological awareness (syllable awareness, onset-end rhyme awareness, and tone awareness), Pinyin letter naming, and visual perception (visual discrimination and visual-spatial relationships). The results showed that variance in Chinese character recognition could be explained by syllable awareness and tone awareness, but not by visual perception skills or Pinyin letter knowledge. Analyses further indicated that Pinyin letter knowledge moderated the relationship between tone awareness and Chinese character recognition. A focus on tone awareness and syllable awareness in the kindergarten may help Chinese children to accomplish the transition from phonological awareness to early literacy, while Pinyin letter knowledge can help children to make the connection between Chinese speech and writing.

Abstract:This study investigates the relationship between phonological awareness and word/character reading in Chinese and English.It involves 70 first-grade children in Beijing,China,who speak Mandarin as native language and have studied English as foreign language for one year.Four tasks assessing phonological awareness based on onset-sound type and twelve tasks assessing word/character reading ability based on word/character familiarity and regularity are administered in Chinese and English respectively.Confirmatory factor analysis that compares four models showes that a three-factor model fits the data adequately and thus better explaines children's performance in the tests.The three factors were: the ability to estimate pronunciations of UNFAMILIAR word/characters,the ability to read FAMILIAR words/characters,and onset awareness.These results indicate phonological awareness transfer and word/character learning strategy transfer in the process of learning an alphabetic language by students from logographic language background in the beginning level.
Neural deficits in auditory phonological processing in Chinese children with English reading impairment

Abstract:Auditory phonological processing skills are critical for successful reading development in English not only in native (L1) speakers but also in second language (L2) learners. However, the neural deficits of auditory phonological processing remain unknown in English-as-the-second-language (ESL) learners with reading difficulties. Here we investigated neural responses during spoken word rhyme judgments in typical and impaired ESL readers in China. The impaired readers showed comparable activation in the left superior temporal gyrus (LSTG), but reduced activation in the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) and left fusiform and reduced connectivity between the LSTG and left fusiform when compared to typical readers. These findings suggest that impaired ESL readers have relative intact representations but impaired manipulation of phonology and reduced or absent automatic access to orthographic representations. This is consistent with previous findings in native English speakers and suggests a common neural mechanism underlying English impairment across the L1 and L2 learners.
Atypical Relationships Between Neurofunctional Features of Print-Sound Integration and Reading Abilities in Chinese Children With Dyslexia

Abstract:Conquering print-sound mappings (e.g., grapheme-phoneme correspondence rules) is vital for developing fluent reading skills. In neuroimaging research, this ability can be indexed by activation differences between audiovisual congruent against incongruent conditions in brain areas such as the left superior temporal cortex. In line with it, individuals with dyslexia have difficulty in tasks requiring print-sound processing, accompanied by a reduced neural integration. However, existing evidence is almost restricted to alphabetic languages. Whether and how multisensory processing of print and sound is impaired in Chinese dyslexia remains underexplored. In this study, we applied a passive audiovisual integration paradigm with functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the possible dysfunctions in processing character-sound (opaque; semantics can be automatically accessed) and pinyin-sound associations (transparent; no particular meaning can be confirmed) in Chinese dyslexic children. Unexpectedly, the dyslexic group did not show reduced neural integration compared with typically developing readers in either character or pinyin experiment. However, the results revealed atypical correlations between neural integration and different reading abilities in dyslexia. Specifically, while the neural integration in the left inferior frontal cortex in processing character-sound pairs correlated with silent reading comprehension in both children with and without dyslexia, it was associated with morphological awareness (semantic-related) in controls but with rapid naming (phonological-related) in dyslexics. This result indicates Chinese dyslexic children may not use the same grapho-semantic processing strategy as their typical peers do. As for pinyin-sound processing, while a stronger neural integration in the direction of "congruent > incongruent" in the left occipito-temporal cortex and bilateral superior temporal cortices was associated with better oral reading fluency in the control group, an opposite pattern was found in dyslexia. This finding may reflect dyslexia's dysfunctional recruitment of the regions in grapho-phonological processing, which further impedes character learning.
Writing System Modulates the Association between Sensitivity to Acoustic Cues in Music and Reading Ability: Evidence from Chinese–English Bilingual Children

Abstract:Music and language share many attributes and a large body of evidence shows that sensitivity to acoustic cues in music is positively related to language development and even subsequent reading acquisition. However, such association was mainly found in alphabetic languages. What remains unclear is whether sensitivity to acoustic cues in music is associated with reading in Chinese, a morphosyllabic language. The present study aimed to answer this question by measuring music (i.e., musical metric perception and pitch discrimination), language (i.e., phonological awareness, lexical tone sensitivity), and reading abilities (i.e., word recognition) among 54 third-grade Chinese-English bilingual children. After controlling for age and non-verbal intelligence, we found that both musical metric perception and pitch discrimination accounted for unique variance of Chinese phonological awareness while pitch discrimination rather than musical metric perception predicted Chinese lexical tone sensitivity. More importantly, neither musical metric perception nor pitch discrimination was associated with Chinese reading. As for English, musical metric perception and pitch discrimination were correlated with both English phonological awareness and English reading. Furthermore, sensitivity to acoustic cues in music was associated with English reading through the mediation of English phonological awareness. The current findings indicate that the association between sensitivity to acoustic cues in music and reading may be modulated by writing systems. In Chinese, the mapping between orthography and phonology is not as transparent as in alphabetic languages such as English. Thus, this opaque mapping may alter the auditory perceptual sensitivity in music to Chinese reading.

Abstract:Chinese lexical tones determine word meaning and are crucial in reading development. Reduced tone awareness is widely reported in children with reading difficulties (RD). Lexical-tone processing requires sensitivity to frequency-modulated sound changes. The present study investigates whether reduced tone awareness in children with RD is reflected in basic auditory processing and the level at which the breakdown occurs. Magnetoencephalographic techniques and an oddball paradigm were used to elicit auditory-related neural responses. Five frequency sweep conditions were established to mirror the frequency fluctuation in Chinese lexical tones, including one standard (level) sweep and four deviant sweeps (fast-up, fast-down, slow-up, and slow-down). A total of 14 Chinese-speaking children aged 9–12 years with RD and 13 age-matched typically developing children were recruited. The participants completed a magnetoencephalographic data acquisition session, during which they watched a silent cartoon and the auditory stimuli were presented in a pseudorandomized order. The results revealed that the significant between-group difference was caused by differences in the level of auditory sensory processing, reflected by the P1m component elicited by the slow-up frequency sweep. This finding indicated that auditory sensory processing was affected by both the duration and the direction of a frequency sweep. Sensitivity to changes in duration and frequency is crucial for the processing of suprasegmental features. Therefore, this sensory deficit might be associated with difficulties discriminating two tones with an upward frequency contour in Chinese.

Whole-Brain Functional Networks for Phonological and Orthographic Processing in Chinese Good and Poor Readers

Abstract:The neural basis of dyslexia in different languages remains unresolved, and it is unclear whether the phonological deficit as the core deficit of dyslexia is language-specific or universal. The current functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study using whole-brain data-driven network analyses investigated the neural mechanisms for phonological and orthographic processing in Chinese children with good and poor reading ability. Sixteen good readers and 16 poor readers were requested to make homophone judgments (phonological processing) and component judgments (visual-orthographic processing) of presented Chinese characters. Poor readers displayed worse performance than the good readers in phonological processing, but not in orthographic processing. Whole-brain activation analyses showed compensatory activations in the poor readers during phonological processing and automatic phonological production activation in the good readers during orthographic processing. Significant group differences in the topological properties of their brain networks were found only in orthographic processing. Analyses of nodal degree centrality and betweenness centrality revealed significant group differences in both phonological and orthographic processing. The present study supports the phonological core deficit hypothesis of reading difficulty in Chinese. It also suggests that Chinese good and poor readers might recruit different strategies and neural mechanisms for orthographic processing.

Abstract:A bioelectrochemical study of charge transfer in the biofilm–chalcopyrite interface was performed to investigate the effect of surficial reduced sulfur species (RSS), in the form of non-stochiometric compounds or polysulfides (Sn2−) and elemental sulfur (S0) on a biofilm structure, during the earliest stages (1, 12 and 24 h) of chalcopyrite biooxidation by Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans alone and adding Leptospirillum sp. The surface of massive chalcopyrite electrodes was exposed to the bacteria, which were analyzed electrochemically, spectroscopically, and microscopically. At the studied earlier times, charge transfer and significant differences in the biofilm structure were detected, depending on the presence of Leptospirillum sp. acting on A. thiooxidans biofilms. Such differences were a consequence of a continuous chalcopyrite pitting and promoting changes in biofilm hydrophobicity. A. thiooxidans modifies the reactive properties of RSS and favors an acidic dissolution, which shifts into ferric dissolution when Leptospirillum sp. is present. A. thiooxidans allows H+ and Fe3+ diffusion, and Leptospirillum sp. enables to surpass the charge transfer (reactivity) barrier between the mineral interface and the ions. The observed changes of hydrophobicity on the interface are associated to ions and electrons activity and transfer. Finally, a model of S0 biooxidation by A. thiooxidans alone or with Leptospirillum sp. is proposed.
The Association of Phonological Awareness with Chinese Character Writing Among Mainland Chinese Primary School Students

Abstract:Phonological awareness is related to multiple language skills. However, the effect of phonological awareness on Chinese character writing has not been fully addressed. This paper aims to discover the relationship of phonological awareness with Chinese character writing, and how such relation varies according to learners’ grade levels. 260 primary school students from Grades 2 to 5 were tested using an onset-rime test, a syllable awareness test and a character dictation test. Results indicated a moderate positive association between phonological awareness and character writing. Two levels of phonological awareness (onset-rime and syllable awareness) showed different and independent influences on character writing with a graded effect, which extend current understanding of the development of phonological awareness in relation to Chinese character learning.
Adults at low reading level are sluggish in disengaging spatial attention

Abstract:An increasing number of studies show that attentional shifting is a primary contributor during the process of learning to read. However, it remains unclear what is the relationship between attentional shifting and word-reading ability in adult readers whose reading skills have matured. More fundamentally, how attentional shifting affects individuals' reading ability remains poorly understood. To address these issues, we grouped adult readers by the level of Chinese character reading and examined the time course of attentional shifting by setting up multiple stimulus-onset asynchronies (SOAs) in the Posner cue-target paradigm. Based on the phonological mediation hypothesis, we also measured multiple abilities involving phonological processing (i.e., rapid automatic naming and phonological awareness). Results showed that compared with adults at the high reading level, adults at the low reading level showed a selective impairment of attentional disengagement. Rapid automatic naming of Chinese characters played a partially mediating role in the association between attentional shifting and word reading. These results provided evidence for the phonological mediation hypothesis, and suggest that attentional shifting affects word reading by influencing phonological processing in adult Chinese readers.
Orthographic and phonological processing in Chinese dyslexic children: an ERP study on sentence reading.

Abstract:An event-related potential (ERP) experiment was conducted to explore the differences between Chinese-speaking dyslexic children and normal school children in orthographic and phonological processing during Chinese sentence reading. Participants were visually presented with sentences, word-by-word and were asked to judge whether the sentences were semantically acceptable. The crucial manipulation was on the sentence-final two-character compound words, which were either correct or incorrect. For the incorrect compounds, the second characters of the base words were replaced by homophonic or orthographically similar characters. It was found that, for the normal controls, the orthographic and phonological mismatches elicited more negative ERP responses, relative to the baseline, over a relatively long time course (including the time windows for P200 and N400) at the central–posterior scalp regions. In contrast, the dyslexic children in general showed no differences between experimental conditions for P200 and N400, although the more detailed time course analyses did reveal some weak effects for the N400 component between experimental conditions. In addition, the mean amplitude of N400 in the homophonic condition was less negative-going for the dyslexics than for the controls. These findings suggest that Chinese dyslexic children have deficits in processing orthographic and phonological information conveyed by characters and, compared with normal children, they rely more on phonological information to access lexical semantics in sentence reading.
The Phonological Awareness and English Word Reading of Chinese Primary School Children

Abstract:The present study examined the relationships between the phonological awareness and English word reading of Chinese primary school children.Correlation and regression analyses were conducted.A close relationship between English and Chinese phonological awareness and English word reading was found,but the relationship varied with different grades.English phonological awareness did not have stable predictive power over English word reading in the case of Chinese children.Also, phonological awareness was not always the strongest predictor of reading.The results of the study suggest that phonological awareness may not function in Chinese children's English word reading in the same way as it does in English speaking children's.

Abstract:<p>Schizophrenia (SZ) is characterized by a series of cognitive impairments, including automatic processing impairment of basic auditory information, indexed by mismatch negativity (MMN). Existing studies mainly focus on MMN induced by deviant of single acoustic features, and relatively few studies have focused on complex acoustic stimuli, especially speech-induced MMN. Many cognitive impairments in SZ are related to speech function. Thus, the present study aimed to examine the reduction of phonetic MMN in SZ as a potential biomarker and its relationship with illness course and functional outcomes. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals were recorded from 32 SZ and 32 healthy controls (HC) in a double oddball paradigm, with /da/ as the standard stimulus and /ba/ and /du/ as the deviant stimuli. MMN was computed for vowel and consonant deviants separately. Clinical symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Symptom Rating Scale (PANSS). Illness duration and illness relapse were acquired by combining clinical interviews and electronic medical records. Functional outcomes were assessed using the Global Assessment of Functioning scale (GAF). Compared with HC, SZ showed lower amplitudes of phonetic MMN, especially for vowel deviants. In addition, the MMN amplitude of the vowel deviant was significantly correlated with illness duration, illness relapse, and functional outcomes among patients with SZ. These findings indicate that the pre-attentive automatic phonetic processing of SZ was impaired for both consonants and vowels, while the vowel processing deficit may be the key speech processing deficit in SZ, which could depict the illness course and predict the functional outcomes.</p>

Exploring mismatch negativity in children with congenital Microtia-Atresia: A Preliminary study

Abstract:Background: To investigate the characteristics of mismatch negativity (MMN) in terms of latency and amplitude in children with bilateral congenital microtia using a Bone conduction implant (Bonebridge), and to explore the relationship between cortical level auditory discrimination, speech perception, and psychosocial well-being. Methods: This descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study compared three groups: eight children with bilateral congenital microtia and Bonebridge implants (bilateral group), eight children with unilateral congenital microtia and no hearing aids (unilateral group), and eight children with normal hearing (NH group). Participants underwent MMN evaluation using a classic oddball paradigm with a pure tone burst stimulus, featuring a 1000 Hz standard stimulus and a 1200 Hz deviant stimulus, presented in a sound field at 65 dBHL. Additionally, speech perception tests, the Meaningful Use of Speech Scale (MUSS), and psychosocial status questionnaires, including the Social Anxiety Scale for Children (SASC) and the Children's Loneliness Scale (CLS), were administered to all subjects. Results: The bilateral group's average MMN latency was 241.23 ± 29.47 ms, and the unilateral group's was 209.96 ± 54.32 ms, both significantly longer than the NH group's 146.05 ± 15.73 ms (p < 0.0001, F=3.509, 95 % CI 68.09 to 122.3 and p = 0.0097, F=11.92, 95 % CI 18.07 to 109.8, respectively). However, no significant difference was found in MMN latency between the bilateral and unilateral groups (p = 0.202, F=3.397, 95 % CI -18.84 to 81.36). The unilateral group scored significantly higher on the MUSS (38.63 ± 1.41 vs. 30.75 ± 3.80, p = 0.0001, F=7.276, 95 % CI -11.16 to -4.590), had lower CLS scores (47.13 ± 8.13 vs. 58.25 ± 8.39, p = 0.024, F=1.065, 95 % CI 1.652 to 20.60), and lower SASC scores (4.13 ± 2.09 vs. 6.50 ± 2.25, p = 0.062, F=1.204, 95 % CI -0.138 to 4.89) compared to the bilateral group. MMN latency in the bilateral group correlated with SASC scores. Conclusion: The MMN latency in congenital microtia patients may serve as an indicator of central auditory discrimination capabilities. In children with bilateral congenital microtia and Bonebridge implants, MMN latency can reflect social anxiety conditions to a certain degree.

Abstract:An event-related potential (ERP) experiment was conducted to investigate the development of orthographic and phonological processing during Chinese sentence reading between school children and adult readers. Participants were visually presented with sentences, word-by-word, and were asked to judge whether the sentences were semantically acceptable. The crucial manipulation was on the sentence-final two-character compound words, which were either correct or incorrect. For the incorrect compounds, the second characters of the base words were replaced by homophonic or orthographically similar characters. ERP results showed that, across participant groups, the peak of P200 appeared earlier for the homophonic condition than for the orthographic and the baseline conditions. Importantly, for both child and adult readers, relative to the baseline, both orthographic mismatch in the homophonic condition and phonological mismatch in the orthographic condition elicited N400 effects. While for adults these effects appeared to be equal in size, the peak of the N400 component appeared earlier for orthographic mismatch than for phonological mismatch. For children the N400 effect was larger for orthographic mismatch than for phonological mismatch. The N400 component was also more negative for children than for adults in the homophonic condition, and its peak appeared later for children than for adults in the homophonic and the baseline conditions. Moreover, the offset of the N400 effects appeared earlier for adults than for children and for orthographic mismatch than for phonological mismatch. These findings suggest that both Chinese adult readers and school children rely more on orthographic information than on phonological information to access lexical semantics in reading Chinese sentences. However, the differential effects between orthography and phonology may have different ERP manifestations in adults and children.
