Abstract:The superelasticity of nanocrystalline NiTi alloys originates from stress-induced martensitic transformation, which may exhibit strain localization. The resultant structural instability often leads to catastrophic consequences during application. It has been verified experimentally that the intrinsic stress–strain response of superelastic NiTi associated with the forward transformation possesses an up-down-up shape and the softening branch is responsible for strain localization. However, measuring the intrinsic response during reverse transformation is still lacking due to experimental difficulties, which hinders analysis of localized phase transformation phenomena. In this work, a novel experimental methodology to extract the complete intrinsic response of SMAs was proposed and applied to nanocrystalline superelastic NiTi. For the first time, the stress variation in the softening branch of the intrinsic response ( σd ), the tangent stiffness of the intrinsic response ( Eint ) and the evolution of strain energy density during both forward and reverse transformations were determined. As grain size (GS) increases from 6 nm to 84 nm, the minimum Eint during forward transformation decreases monotonically from 21.7 GPa to −10.0 GPa, and that during reverse transformation decreases from 29.5 GPa to −5.6 GPa. As GS increases from 22 nm to 84 nm, σd increases from ∼ 20 MPa to ∼ 120 MPa. The present work will provide a paradigm to explore the complete intrinsic response of SMAs, advance the comprehension of its deformation mechanisms, and pave the way for accurate analysis and design of relevant structures.
