Abstract:The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is a major pest of Brassica crops worldwide. This study explores the application of Brassica spp. allelochemicals in trapping diamondback moth adults. The effectiveness of eight commercially obtained Brassica spp. volatiles has been investigated, including - (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, cis-3-hexene-1-ol, β-pinene, sabinene, n-heptanal, allyl isothiocyanate, and Brassica non-volatiles - sinigrin and 4-methylsulfinylbutyl glucosinolate. These allelochemicals were tested at varying concentrations (10 to 90 μg/μL) in laboratory and open-screen cage environment trapping experiments. Cis-3-hexene-1-ol, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, sabinene, and β-pinene significantly attracted and trapped more female moths than controls; attraction decreased at higher concentrations. A 1:1 blend of cis-3-hexene-1-ol and (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate displayed optimal attraction in lab and open environment trials for the tested blends. Among the colors tested, green-colored containers proved to be the most effective for trapping. While the plant allelochemicals attracted diamondback moths, signs of non-target cabbage loopers were observed on treated plants. Y-tube olfactometer assays revealed that (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate and cis-3-hexene-1-ol were attractive to both male and female moths. These findings demonstrate the potential of Brassica spp. allelochemicals, particularly cis-3-hexene-1-ol and (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, for trapping diamondback moths. Abstract:Methyl salicylate (MeSA) is an herbivore-induced plant volatile widely tested for attracting natural enemies for pest control. MeSA is commercially sold as slow-release lures or as a spray. While MeSA application has increased the abundance of natural enemies in numerous food crops, its ability to reduce pests for crop protection is not as frequently demonstrated. Our first objective was to test MeSA lures in ornamental fields where few studies have been done, and monitor natural enemies, pests, and crop protection. A 2-year study in spruce container yards revealed more aphid parasitoids ( Pseudopraon sp.), fewer aphids ( Mindarus obliquus ) on shoot tips, and less shoot tip damage in MeSA plots during the first year. A 2-year study in red maple fields revealed more predatory lady beetles and rove beetles, and parasitic Ceraphronidae, Diapriidae, and Chalcidoidea in one or both years with MeSA. Fewer pest thrips were also captured in MeSA plots, though it is not clear whether this was due to enhanced predation or reduced colonization. Maple growth as measured by stem diameter change did not differ with MeSA use. A 2-year study examining predation on sentinel Halyomorpha haly s eggs in various mature ornamental stock blocks found no increase in predation except for 1 month, though green lacewings, lady beetles, and predatory thrips occurred more in MeSA plots in the first year. While MeSA is expected to enhance biological control by herding in natural enemies, the impacts that applied volatiles have on predator efficiency is mostly unknown. Thus, our second objective examined how volatiles would impact feeding rates at close-range. Adult carabid Pterostichus melanarius , adult coccinellids Coccinella septempunctata and Harmonia axyridis , and larval lacewing Chrysoperla rufilabris consumed their prey at similar rates in the presence/absence of MeSA when food was presented directly in a 28 cm 2 or 30 ml arena, or when foraging in a 520 cm 2 outdoor soil arena or 946 ml arena with aphids on leaves.

Abstract:Abstract Monochamus galloprovincialis (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is a secondary wood borer that acquired primordial importance since it was identified as the European vector of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus , the causal agent of pine wilt disease ( PWD ). An effective trapping method is needed as a tool for managing this insect vector and allowing early detection of nematode transportation. Among effective attractants identified in recent years are the specific M. galloprovincialis aggregation pheromone, host pine kairomones such as α ‐pinene and bark beetle kairomones like ipsenol and methyl‐butenol. The main objective of this study was to optimize the combination of these volatiles to improve lure attractiveness and specificity. Based on ten complementary field experiments, we found a pheromone dose‐response of trap catches. The best combination of attractants was the aggregation pheromone plus two bark beetle kairomones, ipsenol and methyl‐butenol. Addition of pine terpenes, such as α ‐pinene, did not significantly improve M. galloprovincialis trap capture, but did increase catch of non target species, including natural enemies. The use of pine terpenes would be advisable only if priorizing to maximize removal of vectors. While this research has lead to the development a new, highly attractive commercial lure for mature pine sawyers, none of the tested blends were successful in attracting immature pine sawyer adults. Further investigation is needed to develop attractants for these beetles.

Optimization of 13-tetradecenyl acetate sex pheromone for trapping Melanotus communis (Coleoptera: Elateridae)

Abstract:Corn wireworm, Melanotus communis Gyllenhal (Coleoptera: Elateridae), is an economically important larval pest of root and tuber crops in the United States. Previous work to estimate field-level abundance of M. communis has focused on grain-based larval baits placed in soil. However, this sampling method is labor intensive and may not estimate population size accurately. Recent discovery of the M. communis sex pheromone, 13-tetradecenyl acetate, provides a new method to monitor this pest during the adult stage. Early studies with this pheromone showed that different trapping methods might enhance catch and improve trap servicing. We hypothesized that placing lures on elevated traps would increase M. communis capture relative to the in-ground pitfall trapping that is currently used. We had 2 objectives for this study: (a) to compare pheromone captures among in-ground pitfall traps, on-ground pitfalls, elevated pitfalls (1 m), or elevated sticky cards (1 m) and (b) test lure longevity by aging the lures outdoors at 8-, 6-, 4-, 2-, and 0-wk intervals prior to trap deployment in the field. Experiments were conducted in North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, and Florida during the 2021 and 2022 field seasons. Results highlight large variation in M. communis abundance across the 4 states. We showed that 1 m elevated pheromone traps caught the most beetles. The age of the lure prior to deployment had a significant effect on trap catch. The lures that were aged for fewer weeks attracted significantly more beetles, with 0- and 2-wk-old lures capturing the greatest numbers.
Methyl Salicylate Increases Attraction and Function of Beneficial Arthropods in Cranberries

Abstract:Methyl salicylate (MeSA) is an herbivore-induced plant volatile (HIPV) known to attract the natural enemies of herbivores in agro-ecosystems; however, whether this attraction leads to an increase in natural enemy functioning, i.e., predation, remains largely unknown. Here, we monitored for 2 years (2011–2012) the response of herbivores and natural enemies to MeSA lures (PredaLure) by using sticky and pitfall traps in cranberry bogs. In addition, European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis, egg masses were used to determine whether natural enemy attraction to MeSA leads to higher predation. In both years, MeSA increased adult hoverfly captures on sticky traps and augmented predation of O. nubilalis eggs. However, MeSA also attracted more phytophagous thrips and, in 2012, more plant bugs (Miridae) to sticky traps. Furthermore, we used surveillance cameras to record the identity of natural enemies attracted to MeSA and measure their predation rate. Video recordings showed that MeSA lures increase visitation by adult lady beetles, adult hoverflies, and predatory mites to sentinel eggs, and predation of these eggs doubled compared to no-lure controls. Our data indicate that MeSA lures increase predator attraction, resulting in increased predation; thus, we provide evidence that attraction to HIPVs can increase natural enemy functioning in an agro-ecosystem.

Abstract:Studies of oriental fruit moth (OFM), Grapholita molesta (Busck), and codling moth (CM), Cydia pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), both important pests of pome fruit, evaluated the addition of low‐intensity light‐emitting diode (LED) to delta traps baited with 3 commercial monitoring lures. Studies were conducted in 9 orchards treated with and without sex pheromone mating disruption for one or both species. OFM was monitored with a two‐part pheromone/kairomone lure (OFM Combo Dual), while CM was monitored with either a two‐part kairomone lure (CM Dual 4 K) or a sex pheromone lure (CM PH). Both pests were monitored with or without the addition of three types of a low power LED light with peak intensity at 395 (UV‐A), 458 (blue), and 516 (green) nm. The UV‐A LED was found to be the most effective among the three lights for OFM. Unexpectedly, traps with the OFM Combo Dual lure plus UV‐A LED caught similar numbers of CM as traps baited with the CM Dual 4 K and CM PH lures alone. They also caught other pest species, such as oblique banded leafroller (OBLR), Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), and peach twig borer (PTB), Anarsia lineatella (Zeller). Interestingly, in different trials the OFM Combo Dual combined with UV‐A LED light caught significantly more OFM and/or CM females compared to the OFM Combo Dual lure without light, opening the perspective for a female‐oriented monitoring and for a "female removal" management approach of these pests. The development of inexpensive, dual‐modality traps adding a light stimulus to a pheromone/kairomone lure may reduce monitoring costs in orchards with multiple moth pests, improving the trapping efficiency.

Abstract:Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) are among the most devastating pests of orchards, nurseries, and forests. Improving trap design and ethanol lures for capturing ambrosia beetles is necessary to develop effective monitoring and management strategies. In this 2-year study, we assessed 4 trap designs and 3 commercially formulated ethanol lures to refine trapping methods tailored for orchard environments in the eastern United States. Our investigation included orchards in 2 regions, Georgia (pecan orchards) and New York (apple orchards), targeting major ambrosia beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) pest species such as Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky), X. compactus (Eichhoff), X. germanus (Blandford), and Anisandrus maiche (Stark). Among the trap designs evaluated, clear sticky cards were most effective for capturing ambrosia beetles across orchard locations. Notably, in Georgia, sticky cards paired with specific low-release ethanol lures demonstrated enhanced capture of X. crassiusculus and X. compactus, 2 key ambrosia beetle pests found infesting young pecan trees. Similarly, in New York, sticky cards baited with low-release ethanol lures captured the highest rates of X. germanus and A. maiche, thus indicating its suitability for diverse ambrosia beetle populations. Overall, our study provides practical implications for tailoring trapping protocols to optimize ambrosia beetle management strategies in orchard settings.
Multi-year evaluation of an attract-and-kill strategy for apple maggot fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) in New England commercial apple orchards

Abstract:Previously developed behavioral approaches for controlling the apple maggot fly, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) (Diptera: Tephritidae), include attract-and-kill (AK) systems such as perimeter trapping using either, odor-baited red sticky spheres or odor-baited, sticky-free attracticidal spheres with contoured tops that ensure the sustained release of both insecticide and feeding stimulant. Here, over a 3-year span in 26 commercial apple orchards across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine, we evaluated the effectiveness of a novel AK strategy for R. pomonella management. Synthetic apple blend lures were deployed on perimeter-row trees to attract the pest, while perimeter-row insecticide sprays blended with 2% sugar, a known phagostimulant, served as the lethal component. Comparatively, grower standard (GS) blocks received full-block insecticide sprays devoid of sugar and lures. Monitoring revealed that red sticky spheres in AK blocks captured significantly more R. pomonella adults than unbaited monitoring spheres in GS blocks. Penetration of R. pomonella into block interiors remained consistently low and statistically similar for both AK and GS blocks. Whole-block infestation levels showed no significant difference between the 2 management approaches. Notably, insecticide application in AK blocks was reduced by 75%, 64.7%, and 64.2% in 2019, 2020, and 2021, respectively, compared with GS blocks. This grower-friendly AK approach could be integral to a reduced insecticide spray-based strategy for apple cultivation in the northeastern United States.
Comparison of New Kairomone-Based Lures for Cydia pomonella (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in Italy and USA

Abstract:Studies were conducted during the period 2019/2020 to evaluate the effectiveness of four lures for codling moth (Cydia pomonella L.) in pome fruits in Italy and the USA. Multi-component blends of sex pheromone ((E,E)-8,10-dodecadien-1-ol, PH), pear ester ((E,Z)-2,4-ethyl decadienoate, PE), (E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene (DMNT), and pyranoid linalool oxide (6-ethenyl-2,2,6-trimethyloxan-3-ol, LOX) were loaded in either a halobutyl elastomer septum or a PVC matrix and always used in combination with acetic acid (AA) loaded in a closed membrane co-lure. Total moth capture was significantly greater with the PVC than the septum lure loaded with PH/PE + AA in both countries. Female capture in the USA study was significantly greater for 8 weeks in traps baited with the PE/DMNT/LOX blend + AA co-lure than with other lures and adding PH to this blend in a PVC lure significantly reduced female capture. In contrast, female capture in Italy did not differ among lures and counts were similar in both apple and pear crops treated with or without mating disruption. These results suggest that the effectiveness of ‘female removal’ strategies to manage codling moth may be geographically limited and further comparisons are needed in other production regions and in walnut.

Abstract:Field studies were conducted to evaluate new kairomone blends in combination with pear ester (E,Z)‐2,4‐ethyl decadienoate (PE) and acetic acid (AA) for their attraction of male and female codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), in apple, Malus domestica Borkhausen. The addition of decanal to either AA or PE alone significantly increased total and female moth catches. However, the addition of decanal did not improve the attraction of PE + AA. The addition of either the pyranoid (PyrLOX) or furanoid (FurLOX) linalool oxide but not linalool (LOL) increased moth catches with PE but did not increase catches with PE + AA. Similarly, the addition of PyrLOX plus decanal did not improve PE + AA. The addition of (E)‐4,8‐dimethyl‐1,3,7‐nonatriene (DMNT) to either AA, PE + AA or PE + AA+decanal did not significantly increase moth catches. However, the addition of PyrLOX to traps with PE + AA and DMNT (4‐component lure) significantly increased moth catches compared with PE + AA alone or any of the ternary blends of these volatiles. Females accounted for 60%–80% of the total catch with this 4‐component lure. The 4‐component blend with PyrLOX was a more attractive lure than similar blends that substituted LOL, or a binary blend of LOL and FurLOX for PyrLOX. The 4‐component blend caught nearly fourfold more total and female moths than the purported attractant N‐butyl sulphide when it was used in combination with PE + AA. These results indicate that significant improvements in monitoring, mating disruption and mass trapping of codling moth are possible. Further studies are needed to assess the new attractive blend's effectiveness in combination with sex pheromone lures and to evaluate whether other host plant volatiles can be added or substitute for DMNT or LOX when used in combination with PE + AA.

Abstract:Abstract Studies were conducted in Chile and the United States to compare the attractiveness of various commercial sex pheromone lures and two experimental lures for oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck), in peach orchards treated with or without sex pheromone dispensers. The experimental lures contained the three‐component sex pheromone blend of G. molesta : Z ‐8‐dodecenyl acetate, E ‐8‐dodecenyl acetate and Z ‐8‐dodecenol ( Z 8‐12: OH ), and the sex pheromone of codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), ( E,E )‐8,10‐dodecadien‐1‐ol, (codlemone). Commercial lures varied in their substrate, initial loading and blend ratio of components. Significant differences in male catches were found among commercial lures in orchards treated with or without sex pheromone dispensers. Experimental lures with the addition of codlemon e significantly increased the catches of G. molesta using lures loaded with 0%, 1% or 5% Z 8‐12: OH in the G. molesta blend compared with the same ratio of components in just the G. molesta blend. The experimental lures were significantly more attractive than all commercial lures in the untreated orchard. However, moth catch with the experimental lures in the sex pheromone‐treated orchard was only intermediate among all of the lures tested. These findings highlight the need to develop more effective and standardized lures that can be used in trap‐based monitoring programme for this important pest.

Developing female removal for Cydia pomonella (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in organic pear in the USA and Italy

Abstract:Seventeen trials were conducted using traps baited with kairomone-based lures to evaluate female removal (FR) as an effective management tactic for codling moth, Cydia pomonella, L., in organic pear, Pyrus communis L., production in Italy and USA during 2019–2020. Studies included paired plots (0.4–1.4 ha) treated with or without 60 traps ha−1 in cultivars Bartlett and Abate Fétel. Paired plots were also treated together with or without mating disruption (MD) and with similar spray programmes. Three-, four-, and five-component lures were used with several trap types: green, clear or green/white bucket traps and orange delta traps. The three-component lure consisted of (E,E)-8,10-dodecadien-1-ol (sex pheromone, PH), (E,Z)-2,4-ethyl decadienoate (pear ester, PE) and acetic acid (AA); the four-component lure was PE, (E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene (DMNT), 6-ethenyl-2,2,6-trimethyloxan-3-ol (pyranoid linalool oxide, LOX), and AA, and the five-component lure had PH added. Preliminary studies were also conducted to evaluate the trapping efficacy of non-saturating bucket traps. A clear bucket trap baited with PE/DMNT/LOX + AA captured 97-fold more codling moth females than an orange delta trap baited with PH/PE. However, female captures did not differ between traps when both were baited with the four-component lure. Fruit injury from codling moth was significantly reduced with the implementation of FR in both pear production regions. At harvest, mean fruit protection in the USA studies was 65% and 27% in Italy. This difference was likely associated with the four-component lure being less effective in Italy than in the USA. Nevertheless, results demonstrate that FR can be a useful approach to remove females immigrating into orchards and as a new tactic to reduce pest pressure in selected areas of orchards allowing both MD and organic insecticide programmes to be more effective. Further studies should investigate the cost-benefit of matching the intensity of FR to variable pest pressures.

Abstract:Trichogramma dendrolimi Matsumura (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) is one of the most important parasitic natural enemies of Grapholita molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in peach and pear orchards. The artificial rearing T. dendrolimi have been widely used in biological control programs in recent years. However, its actual parasitic effect on the pest in the field is less, so it is important to develop attractants to increase the parasitic efficiency of the parasitoids. T. dendrolimi can be easily attracted by semiochemicals derived from flowers, intact plants, herbivore-attacked plants, and insects in its orchard habitats. In this paper, 73 semiochemicals were evaluated as potential attractants at three concentrations (0.1 mg/mL, 1 mg/mL, and 10 mg/mL) to T. dendrolimi by Y-tube olfactometer bioassays and Electroantennogram (EAG) technology, and then the mixtures of active individual compounds were further tested and evaluated in the field. As a result, 17 individual compounds showed attractive bioactivity to T. dendrolimi. Interestingly, when methyl salicylate and benzaldehyde mixed with linalool oxide or cis-3-hexenyl caproate in a volume ratio of 10:3:3 respectively showed excellent attractant bioactivity for T. dendrolimi in the orchard field. Thus, introducing such parasitoid attractants in orchard habitat may improve the biological control effect to pests.

Abstract:Trapping is considered a powerful tool in the monitoring and control of fruit flies of high economic importance such as the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae). However, the cost of trapping and, in some cases, the safety of the chemicals used as baits are concerning for growers and the environment. Here we present a novel, low cost, environmentally friendly, female-specific bait for C. capitata, called Biodelear, that consists of a mixture of attracting compounds such us pyrazines, pyranones and amorphous nitrogen-based polymers. The new bait was compared to the commercially available attractant Biolure® (Suterra LLC, Bend, OR, USA) in Greece. McPhail-type traps were deployed in an orange orchard located in Athens. Five traps per treatment were used for several weeks during 2009 and four traps per treatment in 2010. Traps contained either 17 g of Biodelear or one Biolure Unipack dispenser. The results showed that both baits were highly efficient in attracting C. capitata females, and to a lesser extent, males. Although Biolure initially appeared to outperform Biodelear, later in the season the two attractants converged in efficacy. In both years, female captures were similar in traps baited with Biolure and Biodelear. However, male captures were higher in Biodelear-baited traps in 2010. In addition, Biodelear seemed to be longer lasting than Biolure, despite not being formulated into a slow-release dispersion system. The low cost of Biodelear and its strong, long-lasting effects render it suitable for mass trapping of the Mediterranean fruit fly.

Abstract:A series of field screening experiments were carried out to compare the effiency of different compositions of pheromone in capillary during the second generation of adults of Chilo suppressalis in 2007 in three sites,i.e.Hangzhou,Tonglu and Jiaxing,in Zhejiang province,China.The experiment used the water-pan trap and cylindric trap,and was in a complete randomized block design.The number of male moths trapped was counted daily to compare the trapping effect of different composition and dosage of pheromone constituents.The results showed that the blends coded as CS2007247A and CS2007247B were the most attractive to male moths of Chilo suppressalis.The trapping capability of the lure degraded as a negative power function with the increase of exposure date.
The Key Phytochemical Cue Camphor Is a Promising Lure for Traps Monitoring the New Monophagous Camphor Tree Borer Pagiophloeus tsushimanus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

Abstract:The landscape plant, Cinnamomum camphora, is a broad-spectrum insect-repelling tree species, mainly due to a diversity of terpenoids, such as camphor. Despite its formidable chemical defenses, C. camphora is easily attacked and invaded by a monophagous weevil pest, Pagiophloeus tsushimanus. Deciphering the key olfactory signal components regulating host preference could facilitate monitoring and control strategies for this pest. Herein, two host volatiles, camphor and ocimene, induced GC-EAD/EAG reactions in both male and female adult antennae. Correspondingly, Y-tube olfactometer assays showed that the two compounds were attractive to both male and female adults. In field assays, a self-made trap device baited with 5 mg dose d(+)-camphor captured significantly more P. tsushimanus adults than isopropanol solvent controls without sexual bias. The trunk gluing trap device baited with bait can capture adults, but the number was significantly less than that of the self-made trap device and adults often fell after struggling. The cross baffle trap device never trapped adults. Neither ocimene nor isopropanol solvent control captured adults. When used in combination, ocimene did not enhance the attraction of d(+)-camphor to both female and male adults. These results indicate that d(+)-camphor is a key active compound of P. tsushimanus adults for host location. The combination of the host-volatile lure based on d(+)-camphor and the self-made trapping device is promising to monitor and provide an eco-friendly control strategy for this novel pest P. tsushimanus in C. camphora plantations.

Abstract:Plum curculio, Conotrachelus nenuphar (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a key pest in Southeastern peach production by infesting fruit and decreasing yield. In Northeastern apples, plum curculio was found to have an "edge effect," where more plum curculio are present next to a forested border than in the center of an orchard, and their propensity to fly or walk depended on air temperature. We conducted field studies over 3 seasons (2019-2021) to investigate whether plum curculio in small Southeastern peach plots exhibits the edge effect and to determine its primary mode of movement (flying or walking). Our results revealed that plum curculio did not exhibit the edge effect in Southeastern peaches. Thus, unlike Northeastern apples where plum curculio exhibits the edge effect, the reduced-input application program where insecticide sprays mainly target a few perimeter-row trees instead of the whole orchard for plum curculio management is not recommended for Southeastern peaches. Additionally, we observed that plum curculio in Southeastern peaches did not exhibit a primary mode of movement, and in most of the sampling weeks, the numbers of flying and walking plum curculio were not significantly correlated in the field. These results emphasize that using plum curculio sampling tools that only capture flying or walking plum curculio is not ideal for monitoring plum curculio activity in the Southeast. Overall, our findings indicate that plum curculio in Southeastern small peach plots and Northeastern apples does not exhibit the same behavior (i.e., edge effect and propensity to fly or walk).
Addition of Pear Ester With Sex Pheromone Enhances Disruption of Mating by Female Codling Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in Walnut Orchards Treated with Meso Dispensers

Abstract:We evaluated the low-density application of 50 dispensers per hectare, in contrast to the traditional >800 dispensers per hectare in apple orchards, to achieve disruption of communication of adult codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), in walnuts, Juglans regia (L.), using several methods. These methods included cumulative catches of male moths in traps baited with sex pheromone (Ph) or codlemone, (E,E)-8,10-dodecadien-1-ol, or a combination of codlemone, pear ester (PE), ethyl (E,Z)-2,4-decadienoate, and acetic acid, and by examining the mating status of females. These data were collected from 2011-2014 in nontreated plots and in similar plots treated with Meso dispensers loaded with codlemone (Ph Meso) or codlemone and PE (Ph + PE Meso). Male moth captures in both the Ph and combination lure traps reduced by 88-96% and 72 to 77%, respectively, compared with traps in the nontreated plots. A significantly higher proportion of female moths were nonmated in plots treated with Ph + PE Meso dispensers (33%) than in plots treated with Ph Meso (18-26%), or left nontreated (13%). In addition, significantly fewer multiple-mated females were trapped in the Ph + PE Meso-treated plots (6%) than in either Ph Meso-treated (13-18%) or nontreated plots (23%). These data suggest that the addition of PE can effectively improve Ph-based disruption of C. pomonella in walnut orchards. In addition, these data suggest that the use of low-density hand-applied dispensers can be an effective and lower-cost approach to manage this pest in the large canopy presented by walnut orchards.

Field Evaluation of Agrotis ipsilon (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Pheromone Blends and Their Application to Monitoring Moth Populations in China

Abstract:The attractiveness of a series of mixtures of (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate (Z7-12:Ac), (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:Ac), and (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (Z11-16:Ac), the Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) pheromone, were evaluated in four locations in China. The ternary blend of Z7-12:Ac, Z9-14:Ac, and Z11-16:Ac was the complete pheromone blend for A. ipsilon and the ratio of Z7-12:Ac and Z9-14:Ac was optimal at 3:1. The most attractive ratio of Z11-16:Ac to the other components depended on geographic location. The optimal ratio was 3:1:6 in Yunnan and Shanxi, 3:1:2 in Sichuan and ranged from 3:1:2 to 3:1:12 in Shanghai, which differs significantly from the ratio of 3:1:16 in Japan. The dose of the blend in the pheromone lure influenced attractiveness to male moths and was related to the temperature in the test locations. Attractiveness of sugar-acetic acid-baited and pheromone-baited traps to male and female moths was different before and after the start of flowering of the oilseed rape crop; large numbers of female moths were attracted to sugar-acetic acid traps before flowering but none after flowering had started. This was similar for male moths and there was no synergistic effect when sugar-acetic acid solutions and pheromone were used together. These studies suggest that pheromone trapping based on the blends of three components can be an effective tool to improve the efficiency of monitoring of this pest in China.
