Abstract:A review of a typical Green's function based scattering theory model for molecular electronics is presented. It focuses on the description of central part of the molecular devices, namely the molecule-metal junction. It allows to combine with various advanced density functional theory approaches to model elastic and inelastic electron transport properties of a variety of single molecular devices. It can treat the molecular junctions with either chemically or physically bonded molecular interfaces on equal footing and is fairly insensitive to the choice of functionals and basis sets. The method can capture the fundamental physics behind the electron transport properties and largely reproduce many experimental results for nonlinear current-voltage characteristics, inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy, and single molecule field-effect transistors.

Abstract:This research provided new mechanistic insights into surface mediated photochemical processes relevant to solar energy conversion. In this past three years our research has focused on oxidation photo-redox chemistry and on the role surface electric fields play on basic spectroscopic properties of molecular-semiconductor interfaces. Although this research as purely fundamental science, the results and their interpretation have relevance to applications in dye sensitized and photogalvanic solar cells as well as in the storage of solar energy in the form of chemical bonds.

Abstract:Photo-induced charge separation (CS) and charge recombination (CR) are crucial for molecular systems used in artificial photosynthesis, photovoltaics, and photocatalysis, and these processes are also important for fundamental photochemical studies. This review article focuses on the recent developments in CS/CR, long-lived charge transfer (CT) state formation, and CR-induced intersystem crossing (ISC) in organic molecular systems, ranging from discussions on the molecular structural features dictating the kinetics and thermodynamics of CS/CR and electron spin transport, as well as the spectroscopies used for the characterization of the CS/CR and the CR-induced ISC. Emphases are put on the molecular design rationales, from the point of view of organic chemists, to achieve fast and efficient CS but slow CR, as such to access the long-lived CT state. The roles of the electron spin in controlling the CS, CR and formation of the long-lived CT state are discussed with exemplars. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectroscopy for characterization of the charge and electron spin transport in the CS, CR and ISC processes is introduced.

Abstract:Electron transport is a fundamental process that controls the intrinsic chemical and physical properties of solid materials. The surface phase becomes dominant when downsized dimensionality into cluster scale in nanomaterials, and surface chemistry plays more and more important role in regulating electron transport. During past decades, varieties of chemical approaches have been developed to modify the surface of low dimensional solids, substantially providing versatile perspectives on engineering electron transport. In this Perspective, we focus on recent researches concerning surface chemical modification strategies, such as surface molecular adsorption, atomic incorporation, defect engineering and spin scattering to engineer electron transport of typical one-/two-dimensional systems. Under the framework of Drude's transport model, we highlight the core role of micro degrees of freedom, i.e., charge, lattice, and spin, in molecular-level understanding and optimizing the regulation effect of surface chemistry. Finally, based on the discussion and current achievements of surface chemistry effect on electron transport of low dimensional solids, some personal perspectives on the future development are also presented.

Abstract:The manufacture of integrated circuits with single-molecule building blocks is a goal of molecular electronics. While research in the past has been limited to bulk experiments on self-assembled monolayers, advances in technology have now enabled us to fabricate single-molecule junctions. This has led to significant progress in understanding electron transport in molecular systems at the single-molecule level and the concomitant emergence of new device concepts. Here, we review recent developments in this field. We summarize the methods currently used to form metal-molecule-metal structures and some single-molecule techniques essential for characterizing molecular junctions such as inelastic electron tunnelling spectroscopy. We then highlight several important achievements, including demonstration of single-molecule diodes, transistors, and switches that make use of electrical, photo, and mechanical stimulation to control the electron transport. We also discuss intriguing issues to be addressed further in the future such as heat and thermoelectric transport in an individual molecule.

Abstract:Recently, great attention has been paid to the possibility of implementing hybrid electronic devices exploiting the self-assembling properties of single molecules. Impressive progress has been done in this field by using organic molecules and macromolecules. However, the use of biomolecules is of great interest because of their larger size (few nanometers) and of their intrinsic functional properties. Here, we show that electron-transfer proteins, such as the blue copper protein azurin (Az), can be used to fabricate biomolecular electronic devices exploiting their intrinsic redox properties, self assembly capability and surface charge distribution. The device implementation follows a bottom-up approach in which the self assembled protein layer interconnects nanoscale electrodes fabricated by electron beam lithography, and leads to efficient rectifying behavior at room temperature.

Abstract:The creation of molecular electronic switches by using smart molecules is of great importance to the field of molecular electronics. This requires a fundamental understanding of the intrinsic electron transport mechanisms, which depend on several factors including the charge transport pathway, the molecule-electrode coupling strength, the energy of the molecular frontier orbitals, and the electron spin state. On the basis of significant progresses achieved in both experiments and theory over the past decade, in this review article we focus on new insights into the design and fabrication of different molecular switches and the corresponding switching effects, which is crucial to the development of molecular electronics. We summarize the strategies developed for single-molecule device fabrication and the mechanism of these switching effects. These analyses should be valuable for deeply understanding the switching effects in molecular electronic devices.

Abstract:An exceptionally brilliant strategy to miniaturize electronic devices is to employ a single‐molecule between two electrodes for carrier conduction at single‐molecule break junctions (SMBJ). To understand the intrinsic mechanisms of operation at these junctions, extremely crucial is to study physical, chemical, and electrochemical properties employing single‐molecules at SMBJs. Further, redox‐based transformations at the nano‐junction could be achieved electrochemically to allow efficient switching between different redox states of a single‐molecule, showcasing the possibility of maneuvering transport properties with on‐off states of the molecule. Herein, are presented the fundamentals of SMBJs, and the electrochemically influenced transformations or switching of organic molecules pursued at SMBJs. Such an understanding of electrochemical phenomena at the nanoscale dimension could bridge the knowledge gap between macroscopic electronic circuits and single‐molecule electronic circuits, whereby the feasibility of switching between the states could maneuver the electronic properties as well as other photophysical parameters.

Abstract:A molecule containing a nitroamine redox center (2′-amino-4-ethynylphenyl-4′-ethynylphenyl-5′-nitro-1-benzenethiol), which is attached by gold electrodes from both sides, is studied by using ab initio theories and Green's function formalisms. We find that the twisting of the middle benzene ring will greatly change the electronic transport properties of the molecular devices, and observe crucial effects of the terminal atoms of the molecule on transport. We show that the coupling between the molecule and the two electrodes and the energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the molecule dominate the transport properties.

Abstract:Computational methods are fast becoming an integral part of nanoelectronics design process. With increasing computational power, electron transport simulation methods such as Non-equilibrium Greens function (NEGF) methods now hold promise in study and design of new electronic devices. Single molecule circuits as optimized device size covers a significant electron transmission, which originated of intrinsic molecular properties. In this study, we study and design a single molecule switch based on a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) electrode (molybdenum disulphide (MoS2)) and a photochromic molecule. The chosen molecule, Diarylethene, is one of the only few thermally irreversible photochromes. The 1T phase of TMD monolayer has metallic properties and can act as a conducting electrode for these molecular switches. Further, the 1T phase can be functionalized using thiol chemistry, which leads to the formation of covalent C-S bonds that enable further addition of functional photochromic groups to the TMD surface. In this report, we compare and contrast different chemistry and spacer groups with respect to their response as a molecular switch, focusing on the ON/OFF transmission ratio at the Fermi level. We identify chemistries for further experimentation. If experimentally realized, these switches are expected to become integral part of various applications including molecular memories, photon detectors and logic devices.
Reorganization energy from charge transport measurements in a monolithically$-$integrated molecular device

Abstract:Intermolecular charge transfer reactions are key processes in physical chemistry. The electron-transfer rates depend on a few system's parameters, such as temperature, electromagnetic field, distance between adsorbates and, especially, the molecular reorganization energy. This microscopic greatness is the energetic cost to rearrange each single$-$molecule and its surrounding environment when a charge is transferred. Reorganization energies are measured by electrochemistry and spectroscopy techniques as well as at the single-molecule limit using atomic force microscopy approaches, but not from temperature$-$dependent charge transport measurements nor in a monolithically$-$integrated molecular device. Nowadays self$-$rolling nanomembrane (rNM) devices, with strain$-$engineered mechanical properties, on$-$a$-$chip monolithic integration, and operable in distinct environments, overcome those challenges. Here, we investigate the charge transfer reactions occurring within a ca. 6 nm thick copper$-$phthalocyanine (CuPc) film employed as electrode-spacer in a monolithically integrated nanocapacitor. Employing the rNM technology allows us to measure the molecules' charge$-$transport dependence on temperature for different electric fields. Thereby, the CuPc reorganization energy is determined as (930 $\pm$ 40) meV, whereas density functional theory (DFT) calculations support our findings with the atomistic picture of the CuPc charge transfer reaction. Our approach presents a consistent route towards electron transfer reaction characterization using current$-$voltage spectroscopy and provides insight into the role of the molecular reorganization energy when it comes to electrochemical nanodevices.

Thermally Activated Electron Transport in Single Redox Molecules

Abstract:We have studied electron transport through single redox molecules, perylene tetracarboxylic diimides, covalently bound to two gold electrodes via different linker groups, as a function of electrochemical gate voltage and temperature in different solvents. The conductance of these molecules is sensitive to the linker groups because of different electronic coupling strengths between the molecules and electrodes. The current through each of the molecules can be controlled reversibly over 2-3 orders of magnitude with the gate and reaches a peak near the redox potential of the molecules. The similarity in the gate effect of these molecules indicates that they share the same transport mechanism. The temperature dependence measurement indicates that the electron transport is a thermally activated process. Both the gate effect and temperature dependence can be qualitatively described by a two-step sequential electron-transfer process.

Abstract:Electron transfer reactions at semiconductor/liquid interfaces are studied using the Fermi Golden rule and a free electron model for the semiconductor and the redox molecule. Bardeen’s method is adapted to calculate the coupling matrix element between the molecular and semiconductor electronic states where the effective electron mass in the semiconductor need not equal the actual electron mass. The calculated maximum electron transfer rate constants are compared with the experimental results as well as with the theoretical results obtained in Part I using tight-binding calculations. The results, which are analytic for an s-electron in the redox agent and reduced to a quadrature for pz- and dz2-electrons, add to the insight of the earlier calculations.

Coherent Electron Transport in DNA Molecules

Abstract:A generalized quantum chemical approach for electron transport in molecular devices is developed. It allows to treat the devices where the metal electrodes and the molecule are either chemically or physically bonded on equal footing. Effects of molecular length and hydrogen bonding on the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of molecular devices are discussed. An extension to include the vibration motions of the molecule has been derived and implemented. It provides the inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) of molecular devices with unprecedented accuracy, and reveals important information about the molecular structures that are not accessible in the experiment. The IETS is shown to be a powerful characterization tool for molecular devices. An effective elongation method has been developed to study the electron transport in nanoand bio-electronic devices at hybrid density functional theory level. It enables to study electronic structures and transportation properties of a 40 nm long self-assembled conjugated polymer junction, a 21 nm long single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), and a 60 basepairs DNA molecule. It is the first time that systems consisting of more than 10,000 electrons have been described at such a sophisticated level. The calculations have shown that the electron transport in sub-22 nm long SWCNT and short DNA molecules is dominated by the coherent scattering through the delocalized unoccupied states. The derived length dependence of coherent electron transport in these nanostructured systems will be useful for the future experiments. Moreover, some unexpected behaviors of these devices have been discovered.

Abstract:Single-molecule devices not only promise to provide an alternative strategy to break through the miniaturization and functionalization bottlenecks faced by traditional semiconductor devices, but also provide a reliable platform for exploration of the intrinsic properties of matters at the single-molecule level. Because the regulation of the electrical properties of single-molecule devices will be a key factor in enabling further advances in the development of molecular electronics, it is necessary to clarify the interactions between the charge transport occurring in the device and the external fields, particularly the optical field. This review mainly introduces the optoelectronic effects that are involved in single-molecule devices, including photoisomerization switching, photoconductance, plasmon-induced excitation, photovoltaic effect, and electroluminescence. We also summarize the optoelectronic mechanisms of single-molecule devices, with particular emphasis on the photoisomerization, photoexcitation, and photo-assisted tunneling processes. Finally, we focus the discussion on the opportunities and challenges arising in the single-molecule optoelectronics field and propose further possible breakthroughs.
