Abstract:Minimum cost seed selection for competitive influence maximization, which selects a set of key users (called seed set) to spread its influence widely into the network at a minimum cost in a competitive social network, is a key algorithmic problem in social influence analysis. Due to its application potential in multiple fields, such as market expansion, election campaigns, and cultural competition, numerous studies have been emerging recently. Despite these efforts, this problem has not been satisfactorily solved since not only finding a (nearly) optimal solution for cost minimization but also evaluating a seed set is computationally complex. Existing works either trade approximation guarantees for practical efficiency using heuristics, or vice versa due to costly Monte Carlo simulations. In this article, a competitive reverse influence estimation-based greedy (CRIEG) algorithm, which provides bounded approximation guarantees, but offers significantly improved empirical efficiency under the competitive independent cascade model, is proposed. The core of the algorithm is a novel estimation method that improves the efficiency by constructing representative sketches to avoid heavy repeated simulations without compromising its performance guarantees. The experimental results on eight real-world networks with up to 1.13 million users show that compared with state-of-the-art algorithms, our algorithm is the most efficient while keeping the best performance, and can be orders of magnitude faster.

Abstract:For the purpose of propagating information and ideas through a social network, a seeding strategy aims to find a small set of seed users that are able to maximize the spread of the influence, which is termed as influence maximization problem. Despite a large number of works have studied this problem, the existing seeding strategies are limited to the static social networks. In fact, due to the high speed data transmission and the large population of participants, the diffusion processes in real-world social networks have many aspects of uncertainness. Unfortunately, as shown in the experiments, in such cases the state-of-art seeding strategies are pessimistic as they fails to trace the dynamic changes in a social network. In this paper, we study the strategies selecting seed users in an adaptive manner. We first formally model the Dynamic Independent Cascade model and introduce the concept of adaptive seeding strategy. Then based on the proposed model, we show that a simple greedy adaptive seeding strategy finds an effective solution with a provable performance guarantee. Besides the greedy algorithm an efficient heuristic algorithm is provided in order to meet practical requirements. Extensive experiments have been performed on both the real-world networks and synthetic power-law networks. The results herein demonstrate the superiority of the adaptive seeding strategies to other standard methods.

Abstract:Advertising in social network has become a multi-billion-dollar industry. A main challenge is to identify key influencers who can effectively contribute to the dissemination of information. Although the influence maximization problem, which finds a seed set of k most influential users based on certain propagation models, has been well studied, it is not target-aware and cannot be directly applied to online advertising. In this paper, we propose a new problem, named Keyword-Based Targeted Influence Maximization (KB-TIM), to find a seed set that maximizes the expected influence over users who are relevant to a given advertisement. To solve the problem, we propose a sampling technique based on weighted reverse influence set and achieve an approximation ratio of (1 − 1/ e − ε ). To meet the instant-speed requirement, we propose two disk-based solutions that improve the query processing time by two orders of magnitude over the state-of-the-art solutions, while keeping the theoretical bound. Experiments conducted on two real social networks confirm our theoretical findings as well as the efficiency. Given an advertisement with 5 keywords, it takes only 2 seconds to find the most influential users in a social network with billions of edges.

Abstract:The information flows among the people while they communicate through social media websites. Due to the dependency on digital media, a person shares important information or regular updates with friends and family. The set of persons on social media forms a social network. Influence Maximization (IM) is a known problem in social networks. In social networks, information flows from one person to another using an underlying diffusion model. There are two fundamental diffusion models: the Independent Cascade Model (ICM) and the Linear Threshold Model (LTM). In this paper, we study a variant of the IM problem called Minimum Influential Seeds (MINFS) problem proposed by Qiang et al.[16]. It generalizes the classical IM problem with LTM as the diffusion model. Compared to IM, this variant has additional parameters: the influence threshold for each node and the propagation range. The propagation range is a positive integer that specifies how far the information can propagate from a node. A node on the network is not immediately influenced until it receives the same information from enough number of neighbors (influence threshold). Similarly, any node does not forward information until it receives the same information from a sufficient number of neighbors (activation threshold). Once a node becomes activated, it tries to activate or influence its neighbors. The MINFS problem aims to select the minimum number of initial spreader nodes such that all nodes of the graph are influenced. In this paper, we extend the study of the MINFS problem. We propose heuristics that construct seed sets based on the average degree of non-activated nodes, closest first, and backbone-based heaviest path.

Abstract:We study the min-cost seed selection problem in online social networks for viral marketing, where the goal is to select a set of seed nodes with the minimum total cost such that the expected number of influenced nodes in the network exceeds a predefined threshold. We propose several algorithms that outperform the previous studies both on the theoretical approximation ratio and on the experimental performance. In the case where the nodes have heterogeneous costs, our algorithms are the first bi-criteria approximation algorithms with polynomial running time and provable approximation ratio. In the case where the users have uniform costs, our algorithms achieve logarithmic approximation ratio and provable time complexity which is smaller than that of the existing algorithms in orders of magnitude. We conduct extensive experiments using real social networks. The experimental results show that, our algorithms significantly outperform the existing algorithms both on the total cost and on the running time, and also scale well to billion-scale networks.

Abstract:As more and more people join social network, viral marketing on online social network becomes a new trend of advertising. Motivated by this, plenty of research focuseson how to maximize the information propagation, which is called the influence maximization problem. Traditional work has made significant progress on this topic. However all ad companies have marketing budget, the research of influence maximization problem should take account of cost control. Under the condition of cost control, we model each user's cost of helping spread information as a feature of each node in the network. Then we modify several most widely studied algorithms to suit the new model. In this paper, a new algorithm called CPP-SNS is proposed, which selects seeds according to cost performance of nodes. Further improvements, based on strategy of partial node loading and submodular property of spread function, make CPP-SNS more effective in practical scenarios. Extensive experiments show this method has a good performance in different social networks. Based on results of our research, we also provide some advice for the practical marketing.

Abstract:Influence maximization is a problem of finding a subset of nodes in a social network that can maximize the spread of influence.This optimization problem of influence maximization is proved NP-hard.Kemple and Kleinberg proposed a natural climbing-hill greedy algorithm that chooses the nodes which could provide the best marginal influence ( KK algorithm ) .KK algorithm has large spread of influence, but is too costly for large social network.We propose a threshold-based heuristic algorithm (TBH) for social network influence maximization based on activation threshold of nodes.The algorithm computes potential influenced nodes (PIN) according to dynamically changing activation threshold of nodes in activating process.In heuristic phase , we select the nodes with maximal PIN as seed nodes.Then , in greedy phase , we greedily select the nodes having maximal margin gain of influence as seed nodes.Our experiments demonstrate that , even without the greedy phase ,the performance of our algorithm is close to that of KK algorithm , and our algorithm has relatively very short running time.The experimental results also show that our algorithm outperforms HPG with the same heuristic factor c.

Abstract:The dissemination of information on networks involves many important practical issues, such as the spread and containment of rumors in social networks, the spread of infectious diseases among the population, commercial propaganda and promotion, the expansion of political influence and so on. One of the most important problems is the influence-maximization problem which is to find out k most influential nodes under a certain propagate mechanism. Since the problem was proposed in 2001, many works have focused on maximizing the influence in a single network. It is a NP-hard problem and the state-of-art algorithm IMM proposed by Youze Tang et al. achieves a ratio of 63.2% of the optimum with nearly linear time complexity. In recent years, there have been some works of maximizing influence on multilayer networks, either in the situation of single or multiple influences. But most of them study seed selection strategies to maximize their own influence from the perspective of participants. In fact, the problem from the perspective of network owners is also worthy of attention. Since network participants have not had access to all information of the network for reasons such as privacy protection and corporate interests, they may have access to only part of the social network. The owners of networks can get the whole picture of the networks, and they need not only to maximize the overall influence, but also to consider allocating seeds to their customers fairly, i.e., the Fair Seed Allocation (FSA) problem. As far as we know, FSA problem has been studied on a single network, but not on multilayer networks yet. From the perspective of network owners, we propose a multiple-influence diffusion model MMIC on multilayer networks and its FSA problem. Two solutions of FSA problem are given in this paper, and we prove theoretically that our seed allocation schemes are greedy. Subsequent experiments also validate the effectiveness of our approaches.
A Node-Embedding-based Influence Maximization Algorithm in Temporal Network

Abstract:The rapid growth of social networks has resulted in the increased application of influence maximization algorithms in various fields, such as viral marketing and rumor containment. It searches for a set of seed nodes of a given size that can maximize the range of influence propagation. Several influence maximization algorithms have been proposed; however, the temporal characteristics of complex systems are rarely considered. To address this issue, we propose an influence maximization algorithm based on temporal network node embedding called micro- and macro-based clustering (MMC). The proposed algorithm can effectively learn the micro- and macro-dynamic characteristics of temporal networks by node embedding. We cluster the temporal network based on the embedding vectors to decrease the complexity of the influence maximization algorithm and the overlapping of influence spread among seed node sets, thereby further improving the performance of the algorithm. Furthermore, we conducted diffusion and similarity comparison experiments on real-world temporal networks to validate the effectiveness of MMCs. The results revealed that compared to five other comparative algorithms, the seed nodes selected by MMC not only guarantee greater influence spread but also go beyond the framework of existing algorithms. The analysis of parameter sensitivity revealed that effective clustering of nodes improves algorithm performance.

Abstract:Social networking service (SNS) applications are changing the way information spreads in online communities. As real social relationships are projected into SNS applications, word of mouth has been an important factor in the information spreading processes of those applications. By assuming each user needs a cost to accept some specific information, this paper studies the initial “seed user” selection strategy to maximize information spreading in a social network with a cost budget. The main contributions of this paper are: 1) proposing a graphic SEIR model (gSEIR) by extending the epidemic compartmental model to simulate the dynamic information spreading process between individuals in the social network; 2) proposing a formal definition for the influence maximization problem with limit cost (IMLC) in social networks, and proving that this problem can be transformed to the weighted set-cover problem (WSCP) and thus is NP-Complete; 3) providing four different greedy algorithms to solve the IMLC problem; 4) proposing a heuristic algorithm based on the method of Lagrange multipliers (HILR) for the same problem; 5) providing two parts of experiments to test the proposed models and algorithms in this paper. In the first part, we verify that gSEIR can generate similar macro-behavior as an SIR model for the information spreading process in an online community by combining the micro-behaviors of all the users in that community, and that gSEIR can also simulate the dynamic change process of the statuses of all the individuals in the corresponding social networks during the information spreading process. In the second part, by applying the simulation result from gSEIR as the prediction of information spreading in the given social network, we test the effectiveness and efficiency of all provided algorithms to solve the influence maximization problem with cost limit. The result show that the heuristic algorithm HILR is the best for the IMLC problem.

Abstract:In a social network, information runs from word-of-mouth based on the relationship of the users. The influence maximization is to find a limited number of initial users (nodes) to spread the information, so that the maximum number of other users could accept the information, which is a useful technique for marketing, information monitoring and advertising in a social network. Diffusion model of social networks imitates the process of information spreading in social networks, and Independent Cascade (IC) Model and Linear Threshold (LT) Model, are well-known stochastic information influence models. In this paper, we extend the classical IC model according to the observation of users' behaviors in social networks and propose an effective influence maximization algorithm based on this extended IC model. This novel algorithm calculates the influence probability of each node in sub-graphs that other nodes can engendered to it iteratively. The simulation experiments on real social network datasets show that our algorithm is much faster than the greedy hill-climbing algorithm, while the results are very close to the greedy algorithm and out-perform the other heuristic algorithms.

Abstract:Many real-world applications based on spreading processes in complex networks aim to deliver information to specific target nodes. However, it remains challenging to optimally select a set of spreaders to initiate the spreading process. In this paper, we study the targeted influence maximization problem using a susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model as an example. Formulated as a combinatorial optimization, the objective is to identify a given number of spreaders that can maximize the influence over target nodes while minimize the influence over non-target nodes. To find a practical solution to this optimization problem, we develop a theoretical framework based on a message passing process and perform a stability analysis on the equilibrium solution using non-backtracking (NB) matrices. Based on the optimal perturbation on the equilibrium solution, we further introduce a metric, termed targeted collective influence, for each node to identify influential spreaders for targeted spreading processes. The proposed method, validated in both synthetic and real-world networks, outperforms other competing heuristic approaches. Our results provide a framework for analyzing the targeted influence maximization problem and a practical method to identify spreaders in real-world applications.

Abstract:Influence maximization serves as the main goal of a variety of social network activities such as viral marketing and campaign advertising. The independent cascade model for the influence spread assumes a one-time chance for each activated node to influence its neighbors. This reasonable assumption cannot be bypassed, since otherwise the influence probabilities of the nodes, modeled by the edge weights, would be altered. On the other hand, the manually activated seed set nodes can be reselected without violating the model parameters or assumptions. The reselection of a seed set node, simply means paying extra budget to a previously paid node in order for it to retry its influential skills on its uninfluenced neighbors. This view divides the influence maximization process into two cases: the simple case where the reselection of the nodes is not considered and the reselection case. In this study we will analyze the behavior of real world networks on the difference between these two influence maximization cases. First we will show that the difference between the simple and the reselection cases constitutes a wide spectrum of networks ranging from the reselection-independent ones, where the reselection case has no noticeable advantage to the simple case, to the reselection-friendly ones, where the influence spread in the reselection case is twice the one in the simple case. Then we will correlate this dynamic to other influence maximization dynamics of the network. Finally, a significant entanglement between this dynamic and the network structure is shown and verified by the experiments. In other words, a series of conditions on the network structure is specified whose fulfilment is a sign for a reselection-friendly network. As a result of this entanglement, reselection-friendly networks can be spotted without performing the time consuming influence maximization algorithms.

Abstract:Influence Maximization aims to identify k nodes from a network such that the influence spread invoked by the k nodes is maximized.It has various real applications in viral-marketing areas and has been extensively studied by the academic and industrial communities.We observe that existing works all focus on a single network,which identifies k nodes that has the maximal influence spread on one given network;however,with the popularization of social networks,a variety of social platforms are emerged to fulfill various social needs,which leads that social populations will not be confined to a social network,and they will be distributed in different social networks.The direct issue is that the viral-marketing based applications,such as the product promotion on a single network can’t meet the breadth demands of current marketing promotion, it’s probably that the whole user of the network can’t reach the number of targeted population, or the advertisers expect to maximize the influence spread on multiple social networks with k users.Compared with single network,more challenges come forth.It is challengeable to find k users that have the maximal influence spread on the multiple social networks,since it has been proven that influence maximization problem is NP hard.It is more complex to evaluate the influence strength between nodes,since the information propagation is more intricacy among multiple social networks.Besides,entity recognition has to be considered when analyze influence on multiple social networks,since it is normal for a person to have multiple social network accounts.With regards to these,in this paper,we study the influence maximization problem on multiple social networks.In summary,we study the differences of influence maximization between single network and multiple social networks carefully,and propose the self propagation property of entity to build relation among different networks.Later,we propose the influence calculation model to model the influence strength between nodes.We extend the tree-based algorithm model to adapt the multiple social networks situation,based on the proposed influence calculation model and the extended tree-based algorithm model,and we propose multiple optimized strategies to promote performance,such as by further exploring the submodular property to avoid redundant computation,to accelerate seed selection by using the upper influence marginal benefit to approximate the accurate benefit,etc.Finally,numerical experimental studies on real datasets demonstrate the proposed algorithms outperform existing methods significantly,and detailed experimental studies from influence spread and running time have been illustrated respectively.
Minimum-sized Influential Node Set Selection for Social Networks under the Independent Cascade Model

Abstract:Social networks are important mediums for communication,information dissemination, and influence spreading. Most of existing works focus on understanding the characteristics of social networks or spreading information through the 'word of mouth' effect of social networks. However, motivated by applications of alleviating social problems, such as drinking, smoking, addicting to gaming, and influence spreading problems, such as promoting new products, we propose a new optimization problem named the Minimum-sized Influential Node Set (MINS) selection problem, which is to identify the minimum-sized set of influential nodes, such that every node in the network could be influenced by these selected nodes no less than a threshold. Our contributions are threefold. First, we prove that, under the independent cascade model, MINS is NP-hard. Subsequently, we present a greedy approximation algorithm to address the MINS selection problem. Moreover, the performance ratio of the greedy algorithm is analyzed. Finally, to validate the proposed greedy algorithm, extensive experiments and simulations are conducted both on real world coauthor data sets and random graphs.

Abstract:The influence maximization (IM) problem as defined in the seminal paper by Kempe et al. has received widespread attention from various research communities, leading to the design of a wide variety of solutions. Unfortunately, this classical IM problem ignores the fact that time taken for influence propagation to reach the largest scope can be significant in realworld social networks, during which the underlying network itself may have evolved. This phenomenon may have considerable adverse impact on the quality of selected seeds and as a result all existing techniques that use this classical definition as their building block generate seeds with suboptimal influence spread. In this paper, we revisit the classical IM problem and propose a more realistic version called PROTEUS-IM (Propagation Time conscious Influence Maximization) to replace it by addressing the aforementioned limitation. Specifically, as influence propagation may take time, we assume that the underlying social network may evolve during influence propagation. Consequently, PROTEUSIM aims to select seeds in the current network to maximize influence spread in the future instance of the network at the end of influence propagation process without assuming complete topological knowledge of the future network. We propose a greedy and a Reverse Reachable (RR) set-based algorithms called PROTEUS-GENIE and PROTEUS-SEER, respectively, to address this problem. Our algorithms utilize the state-of-the-art Forest Fire Model for modeling network evolution during influence propagation to find superior quality seeds. Experimental study on real and synthetic social networks shows that our proposed algorithms consistently outperform state-of-the-art classical IM algorithms with respect to seed set quality.
On Approximation of Real-World Influence Spread.

Abstract:To find the most influential nodes for viral marketing, several models have been proposed to describe the influence propagation process. Among them, the Independent Cascade (IC) Model is most widely-studied. However, under IC model, computing influence spread (i.e., the expected number of nodes that will be influenced) for each given seed set has been proved to be #P-hard. To that end, in this paper, we propose GS algorithm for quick approximation of influence spread by solving a linear system, based on the fact that propagation probabilities in real-world social networks are usually quite small. Furthermore, for better approximation, we study the structural defect problem existing in networks, and correspondingly, propose enhanced algorithms, GSbyStep and SSSbyStep , by incorporating the Maximum Influence Path heuristic. Our algorithms are evaluated by extensive experiments on four social networks. Experimental results show that our algorithms can get better approximations to the IC model than the state-of-the-arts.

Abstract:The problem of selecting an optimal seed set to maximise influence in networks has been a subject of intense research in recent years. However, despite numerous works addressing this area, it remains a topic that requires further elaboration. Most often, it is considered within the scope of classically defined graphs with a spreading model in the form of Independent Cascades. In this work, we focus on the problem of budget-constrained influence maximisation in multilayer networks using a Linear Threshold Model. Both the graph model and the spreading process we employ are less prevalent in the literature, even though their application allows for a more precise representation of the opinion dynamics in social networks. This paper aims to answer which of the sixteen evaluated seed selection methods is the most effective and how similar they are. Additionally, we focus our analysis on the impact of spreading model parameters, network characteristics, a budget, and the seed selection methods on the diffusion effectiveness in multilayer networks. Our contribution also includes extending several centrality measures and heuristics to the case of such graphs. The results indicate that all the factors mentioned above collectively contribute to the effectiveness of influence maximisation. Moreover, there is no seed selection method which always provides the best results. However, the seeds chosen with VoteRank-based methods (especially with the $v-rnk-m$ variant we propose) usually provide the most extensive diffusion.

In this work, we proposed a potential-based node selection strategy to solve this problem. Our work is based on the observation that local most-influential node-selection adopted in many works, which is very costly, does not always lead to better result. In particular, we investigate on how to set two parameters(*** v and b uv ) appropriately. We conduct thorough experiments to evaluate effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate that our approximation algorithm significantly outperforms local-optimal greedy strategy.
