Abstract:In this paper,a multi-robot task planning framework is proposed by solving optimal path allocation problem.Formal description of task planning problem for optimal path allocation is brought forth and the integral framework is depicted.To implement this framework,three important techniques are explored in depth including Shortest Path with Recourse Problem(SPRP),solving multiple traveling robots problem by randomized algorithms,and update model of probability framework. Exerimental results illustrate that this framework is feasible and practical.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel method for solving the multi-robot path planning problem in narrow warehouse environments. Robots may have to be operated in close proximity to each other in narrow lanes between pod clusters, which challenges robot-robot collision avoidance. This motivates us to consider an efficient algorithm to generate collision-free robot paths in narrow warehouse environments. The algorithm builds a two-stage scheme based on integer programming: (i) multi-robot path planning under one-way constraints; and (ii) fast feasibility heuristics. The developed algorithm has two advantages: (i) the proposed scheme successfully avoids the situation where the robots collide in narrow lanes; and (ii) by using the fast feasibility heuristics which replaces the integer programming solver's built-in feasibility heuristics, the feasibility heuristics' running time can be effectively reduced while producing better initial feasible solutions for the integer programming model solving process. Compared with the existing optimal, sub-optimal, and polynomial-complexity algorithms, our developed algorithm can leverage the advantage of integer programming to effectively reach a balance between running time and optimality in narrow warehouse environments. This point is demonstrated in the simulations.

Abstract:Scheduling collision-free paths for a large number of robots in dense environments with high efficiency is achieved in this work. We propose an algorithm, OMPP (One-way Multi-robot Path Planning), using a new topological skeleton representation of the dense environment by introducing the particular collision-free traffic rules. We propose the integer programming technique based on the topological skeleton graph to tackle the multi-robot path planning optimization problem using distance metrics. We realize two practical achievements in solving multi-robot path planning problems in dense environments: collision-free robotic path generation and an efficient solving process. We have performed numerous simulations. According to the extensive simulation data, our algorithm suggests a higher overall performance in dense environments than the existing representative algorithms.

Abstract:We consider a multi-robot system with a team of collaborative robots and multiple tasks that emerges over time. We propose a fully decentralized task and path planning (DTPP) framework consisting of a task allocation module and a localized path planning module. Each task is modeled as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) or a Mixed Observed Markov Decision Process (MOMDP) depending on whether full states or partial states are observable. The task allocation module then aims at maximizing the expected pure reward (reward minus cost) of the robotic team. We fuse the Markov model into a factor graph formulation so that the task allocation can be decentrally solved using the max-sum algorithm. Each robot agent follows the optimal policy synthesized for the Markov model and we propose a localized forward dynamic programming scheme that resolves conflicts between agents and avoids collisions. The proposed framework is demonstrated with high fidelity ROS simulations and experiments with multiple ground robots.

Abstract:This study addresses the complexities of orchestrating multi-target transportation tasks within multi-agent systems, constrained by load capacity. The primary objective is to engineer an advanced path planning framework that assures collision avoidance and optimal load distribution. Diverging from conventional single-path strategies, this research incorporates load factors and requires continuous dynamic multi-target point and path planning to ensure agents can efficiently navigate through a series of predetermined key points. To address this complex requirement, a two-stage multi-agent task allocation and path planning method is proposed. First, an initial solution is obtained using a suboptimal algorithm, followed by optimization iterations using the large neighborhood search algorithm to improve task allocation. In the second stage, an accelerated algorithm based on priority search is used to plan optimal paths for each agent in a predetermined order. The proposed algorithm's effectiveness is comprehensively evaluated through a series of experimental evaluations and comparisons with the commercial solver Gurobi within a limited time. The results show that the proposed method achieves optimality in both running time and minimum path cost while ensuring the load balance of agents.

Abstract:This letter presents a novel multi-robot task allocation and path planning method that considers robots' maximum range constraints in large-sized workspaces, enabling robots to complete the assigned tasks within their range limits. Firstly, we developed a fast path planner to solve global paths efficiently. Subsequently, we propose an innovative auction-based approach that integrates our path planner into the auction phase for reward computation while considering the robots' range limits. This method accounts for extra obstacle-avoiding travel distances rather than ideal straight-line distances, resolving the coupling between task allocation and path planning. Additionally, to avoid redundant computations during iterations, we implemented a lazy auction strategy to speed up the convergence of the task allocation. Finally, we validated the proposed method's effectiveness and application potential through extensive simulation and real-world experiments. Abstract:Task allocation is an important problem in multi-robot system which can be defined with different setup for different application, i.e. coverage, surveillance and mining mission in static or dynamic scenarios. Our focus in this paper is exploring environment to accomplish tasks distributed over the environment by minimizing overall cost of the system. This problem is defined as a NP-Hard problem, thus will be more challenging in larger environments containing many robots and tasks. To solve multi-robot task allocation in very large environment we propose a new deployment-based framework. Our proposal divided the problem into two sub-problems: region partitioning and routing problem. This decomposition eases considering our problem specification in multi-robot system which are not easily considerable in other approaches, i.e distribution of the tasks or robots' initial position. Load balancing is done globally by deploying robots in a proper location of the environment and assigning sub-regions among them. Sub-regions contains set of points, where the goal is visiting all the points individually by one of the robots. On the other hand, after deploying the robots, routing techniques can be simply applied to find shortest and safest paths for every robots. To search for solutions in this NP-hard problem, two methods are built on a tailor-made multi-objective scheme of Genetic Algorithm (GA) with a different setup and search operators, and a reinforcement learning approach. Simulation results testify the performance of our methods in comparison to existing ones.

Abstract:Path planning is crucial in the scheduling and motion planning of multiple robots. However, solving multi-robot path-planning problems efficiently and quickly is challenging due to their high complexity and long computational time, especially when dealing with many robots. This paper presents a unified mathematical model and algorithm for the path planning of multiple robots moving from one formation to another in an area with obstacles. The problem was initially simplified by constructing a cost matrix, and then the route planning was achieved by integrating an elite enhanced multi-population genetic algorithm and an ant colony algorithm. The performance of the proposed planning method was verified through numerical simulations in various scenarios. The findings indicate that this method exhibits high computational efficiency and yields a minimal overall path distance when addressing the path-planning problem of a multi-robot formation reconstruction. As a result, it holds promising potential for the path-planning problem of a multi-robot formation reconstruction.

Abstract:We propose a generic multi-robot planning mechanism that combines an optimal task planner and an optimal path planner to provide a scalable solution for complex multi-robot planning problems. The Integrated planner, through the interaction of the task planner and the path planner, produces optimal collision-free trajectories for the robots. We illustrate our general algorithm on an object pick-and-drop planning problem in a warehouse scenario where a group of robots is entrusted with moving objects from one location to another in the workspace. We solve the task planning problem by reducing it into an SMT-solving problem and employing the highly advanced SMT solver Z3 to solve it. To generate collision-free movement of the robots, we extend the state-of-the-art algorithm Conflict Based Search with Precedence Constraints with several domain-specific constraints. We evaluate our integrated task and path planner extensively on various instances of the object pick-and-drop planning problem and compare its performance with a state-of-the-art multi-robot classical planner. Experimental results demonstrate that our planning mechanism can deal with complex planning problems and outperforms a state-of-the-art classical planner both in terms of computation time and the quality of the generated plan.

Abstract:Planning for multi-robot teams in complex environments is a challenging problem, especially when these teams must coordinate to accomplish a common objective. In general, optimal solutions to these planning problems are computationally intractable, since the decision space grows exponentially with the number of robots. In this paper, we present a novel approach for multi-robot planning on topological graphs using mixed-integer programming. Central to our approach is the notion of a dynamic topological graph, where edge weights vary dynamically based on the locations of the robots in the graph. We construct this graph using the critical features of the planning problem and the relationships between robots; we then leverage mixed-integer programming to minimize a shared cost that depends on the paths of all robots through the graph. To improve computational tractability, we formulated our optimization problem with a fully convex relaxation and designed our decision space around eliminating the exponential dependence on the number of robots. We test our approach on a multi-robot reconnaissance scenario, where robots must coordinate to minimize detectability and maximize safety while gathering information. We demonstrate that our approach is able to scale to a series of representative scenarios and is capable of computing optimal coordinated strategic behaviors for autonomous multi-robot teams in seconds.

Abstract:This letter presents a new Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) approach to a Cooperative Multi-Robot Task Allocation (CMRTA) problem, where the robots have to minimize the total team cost and, additionally, balance their workloads. We formulate the CMRTA problem as a more complex variant of multiple Travelling Salesman Problems (mTSP) and, in particular, address how to minimize the total travel distance of the entire robot team, as well as how to minimize the highest travel distance of an individual robot. The proposed approach extends the standard single-objective Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to cope with the multiple objectives, and its novel feature lies in a Pareto front refinement strategy and a probability-based leader selection strategy. To validate the proposed approach, we first use three benchmark functions to evaluate the performance of finding the true Pareto fronts in comparison with four existing well-known algorithms in continuous spaces. Afterwards, we use six datasets to investigate the task allocation mechanisms in dealing with the CMRTA problem in discrete spaces.

Abstract:For a team of heterogeneous robots executing multiple tasks, we propose a novel algorithm to optimally allocate tasks to robots while accounting for their different capabilities. Motivated by the need that robot teams have in many real-world applications of remaining operational for long periods of time, we allow each robot to choose tasks taking into account the energy consumed by executing them, besides the global specifications on the task allocation. The tasks are encoded as constraints in an energy minimization problem solved at each point in time by each robot. The prioritization of a task over others -- effectively signifying the allocation of the task to that particular robot -- occurs via the introduction of slack variables in the task constraints. Moreover, the suitabilities of certain robots towards certain tasks are also taken into account to generate a task allocation algorithm for a team of robots with heterogeneous capabilities. The efficacy of the developed approach is demonstrated both in simulation and on a team of real robots.

Abstract:We propose a new formulation for the multi-robot task planning and allocation problem that incorporates (a) precedence relationships between tasks; (b) coordination for tasks allowing multiple robots to achieve increased efficiency; and (c) cooperation through the formation of robot coalitions for tasks that cannot be performed by individual robots alone. In our formulation, the tasks and the relationships between the tasks are specified by a task graph. We define a set of reward functions over the task graph's nodes and edges. These functions model the effect of robot coalition size on the task performance, and incorporate the influence of one task's performance on a dependent task. Solving this problem optimally is NP-hard. However, using the task graph formulation allows us to leverage min-cost network flow approaches to obtain approximate solutions efficiently. Additionally, we explore a mixed integer programming approach, which gives optimal solutions for small instances of the problem but is computationally expensive. We also develop a greedy heuristic algorithm as a baseline. Our modeling and solution approaches result in task plans that leverage task precedence relationships and robot coordination and cooperation to achieve high mission performance, even in large missions with many agents.

Efficient Trajectory Planning for Multiple Non-holonomic Mobile Robots via Prioritized Trajectory Optimization

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel approach to efficiently generate collision-free optimal trajectories for multiple non-holonomic mobile robots in obstacle-rich environments. Our approach first employs a graph-based multi-agent path planner to find an initial discrete solution, and then refines this solution into smooth trajectories using nonlinear optimization. We divide the robot team into small groups and propose a prioritized trajectory optimization method to improve the scalability of the algorithm. Infeasible sub-problems may arise in some scenarios because of the decoupled optimization framework. To handle this problem, a novel grouping and priority assignment strategy is developed to increase the probability of finding feasible trajectories. Compared to the coupled trajectory optimization, the proposed approach reduces the computation time considerably with a small impact on the optimality of the plans. Simulations and hardware experiments verified the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach.

Abstract:We present a novel framework for addressing the challenges of multi-Agent planning and formation control within intricate and dynamic environments. This framework transforms the Multi-Agent Path Finding (MAPF) problem into a Multi-Agent Trajectory Planning (MATP) problem. Unlike traditional MAPF solutions, our multilayer optimization scheme consists of a global planner optimization solver, which is dedicated to determining concise global paths for each individual robot, and a local planner with an embedded optimization solver aimed at ensuring the feasibility of local robot trajectories. By implementing a hierarchical prioritization strategy, we enhance robots' efficiency and approximate the global optimal solution. Specifically, within the global planner, we employ the Augmented Graph Search (AGS) algorithm, which significantly improves the speed of solutions. Meanwhile, within the local planner optimization solver, we utilize Control Barrier functions (CBFs) and introduced an oblique cylindrical obstacle bounding box based on the time axis for obstacle avoidance and construct a single-robot locally aware-communication circle to ensure the simplicity, speed, and accuracy of locally optimized solutions. Additionally, we integrate the weight and priority of path traces to prevent deadlocks in limiting scenarios. Compared to the other state-of-the-art methods, including CBS, ECBS and other derivative algorithms, our proposed method demonstrates superior performance in terms of capacity, flexible scalability and overall task optimality in theory, as validated through simulations and experiments.

Abstract:This paper proposes an algorithm that provides operational strategies for multiple heterogeneous mobile robot systems utilized in many real-world applications, such as deliveries, surveillance, search and rescue, monitoring, and transportation. Specifically, the authors focus on developing an algorithm that solves a min-max multiple depot heterogeneous asymmetric traveling salesperson problem (MDHATSP). The algorithm is designed based on a primal-dual technique to operate given multiple heterogeneous robots located at distinctive depots by finding a tour for each robot such that all the given targets are visited by at least one robot while minimizing the last task completion time. Building on existing work, the newly developed algorithm can solve more generalized problems, including asymmetric cost problems with a min-max objective. Though producing optimal solutions requires high computational loads, the authors aim to find reasonable sub-optimal solutions within a short computation time. The algorithm was repeatedly tested in a simulation with varying problem sizes to verify its effectiveness. The computational results show that the algorithm can produce reliable solutions to apply in real-time operations within a reasonable time.

Abstract:In extensive outdoor collaborative exploration tasks, multiple robots require efficient path planning methods to ensure rapid and comprehensive map construction. However, current collaborative mapping algorithms often integrate poorly with path planning, especially under limited communication conditions. Such conditions can complicate data exchange, leading to inefficiencies and missed areas in real-world environments. This paper introduces a path planning approach specifically designed for distributed collaborative mapping tasks, aimed at enhancing map completeness, mapping efficiency, and communication robustness under communication constraints. We frame the entire task as a k-Chinese Postman Problem (k-CPP) and optimize it using a genetic algorithm (GA). This method fully leverages topology maps to efficiently plan subpaths for multiple robots, ensuring thorough coverage of the mapping area without the need for prior navigation maps. Additionally, we incorporate communication constraints into our path planning to ensure stable data exchange among robots in environments with only short-range communication capabilities. Field experiment results highlight the superior performance of our method in terms of stability, efficiency, and robust inter-robot communication.
A Multi-Robot Task Allocation and Path Planning Method for the Robotic Mobile Fulfillment System

Abstract:With the popularization and application of Robotic Mobile Fulfillment System (RMFS), more and more problems related to it have attracted attention from researchers. This paper considers a multi-robot task allocation and path planning problem in RMFS and proposes a hybrid method by combining a Genetic algorithm (GA) with a Hierarchical Cooperative A * (HCA*) algorithm. The GA generates several task sequences as targets for path planning, and the HCA* successfully finds a collision-free path for several mobile robots while considering the optimization of the makespan and flowtime of the entire order. For the narrow aisle in storge areas, we allow the mobile robots to wait in place and provide a simple heuristic method for HCA* to arrange priorities for mobile robots. The results of the simulation experiments confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence-enhanced autonomous unmanned systems, such as large-scale autonomous robot networks, are widely used in logistic and industrial applications. In this article, we address the integrated task assignment, path planning, and coordination problem applied for large-scale robot networks with the existence of uncertainties. In particular, a novel generalized conflict graph is designed which encodes the traveling time cost of the subsequent path planning result of each task-robot assignment and also includes the predicted path conflicts of each two assignments. An integrated optimization problem which aims to minimize the total traveling cost and potential path conflicts simultaneously is first formulated and then transformed into a linear programming instance to obtain the optimal solution. In particular, to satisfy the real-time requirement in large-scale systems, a greedy solution is presented which has the near-optimal performance but can decrease the computational complexity by orders of magnitude. The optimality, scalability, robustness, and efficiency of our approach are demonstrated by comprehensive comparisons with existing state-of-the-art approaches. Note to Practitioners—With the development of artificial intelligence techniques, large-scale autonomous robot networks are increasingly used in the logistic warehouses, unmanned container terminals, and intelligence transportation systems. This article considers the large-scale networks with hundreds or even thousands of unmanned robots which are implemented in lifelong transportation systems with uncertainties existed in practical execution process. Our main concept is to simultaneously minimize the total time cost of all the tasks and the potential motion conflicts among all the robots in the subsequent execution stage, thus alleviating robot congestions, balancing traffic distributions, increasing system efficiency, and improving the robustness and scalability. Lifelong -imulations with thousand robots illustrate that our approach can reduce more than 30% of the time steps consumed for coordinating robot motion conflicts, and in the meantime, the throughput, and overall system efficiency are improved. However, simulation results show that the system improvement decreases in the presence of extreme high uncertainties (such as temporary motion and communication failures of the robot), due to the inaccurate conflict prediction in the integrated optimization stage. Our future work includes the deep-learning-based traffic evolution prediction and the online reallocation and planning in highly dynamic scenarios.
