Abstract:Atrazine, a herbicide used widely, could not be effectively removed from waters by chemical or biological processes. In this work, the performances and mechanisms for atrazine degradation were examined by persulfate (PS) activation with nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and graphene (GR) composites at various conditions including dosages of nZVI/GR and PS, pH value, temperature and natural organic matters (NOM). Results showed that mass ratio of 5:1 for nZVI to GR exhibited the highest efficiency for catalytic degradation of atrazine when 92.1% of atrazine was removed within 21 min. The degradation efficiencies of atrazine increased when PS concentration increased from O-2 to 1.0 mM, and were favored in acidic pH and high temperature, while was not affected by NOM with a concentration less than 4 mg/L. Electron spin resonance and radical quenching studies showed that both center dot OH and SO4 center dot- were mainly produced on the surface of nZVI/GR, while SO4 center dot- was the predominant radicals responsible for the degradation of atrazine. Mechanisms for atrazine degradation were also proposed on the basis of XRD and XPS analysis. And its degradation pathways involved in dealkylation, alkylic hydroxylation, dechlorination-hydroxylation, and alkylic oxidation using LC/MS/MS techniques. These results could provide a better understanding of the application of nZVI/GR-PS system for atrazine removal from waters.

Abstract:Persulfate (PS)-based advanced oxidation processes have attracted significant attention in the field of organic contaminant remediation. In this study, we developed a biochar-supported Fe nanoparticle catalyst (FeNPs@BC) characterized by a substantial quantity of Fe 0 , with the purpose of activating persulfate to facilitate the degradation of atrazine (ATZ) in soil. The results revealed that the 800 °C pyrolyzed FeNPs@BC-PS system, incorporating 2 wt% FeNPs@BC and 3 mmol/L PS, achieved rapid removal of ATZ (100%) within 10 min ( k obs =0.19023 min −1 ). Active-species quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) demonstrated the presence of sulfate radicals (SO 4 •- ), hydroxyl radicals (•OH), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) in the FeNPs@BC-PS system. Furthermore, FeNPs@BC maintained a high catalytic activity even after four cycles of recycling. And the catalyst exhibited efficiency in degrading three other triazine herbicides (simazine, terbuthylazine , and ametryn). Notably, toxicity prediction experiments on the degradation products indicated lower toxicity compared to that of the parent ATZ. In summary, this study presents a promising solution for the development of an economical, efficient, and environmentally friendly technology capable of rapidly degrading soil herbicides.

Abstract:Nanoscale zero‐valent iron (nZVI) has high removal efficiency and strong reductive ability to organic contaminants, but this reactivity soon ceases and is attributed to rapid passivation of the nZVI surface due to the formation of iron oxides. In the present study, bimetallic palladium‐zero valent iron nanoparticles were activated with sodium citrate (SC‐nPd/Fe) to enhance 2,4‐D dechlorination from aqueous solutions. FTIR and XRD analyses showed that there was no passivation layer on the surface of nZVI after the addition of SC, and XPS analysis confirmed the nZVI after the reaction still maintained high reactivity and surface Pd ratio. The existence of SC facilitated the transfer of electrons from Fe0 to contaminants, thus accelerating the reductive dechlorination of 2,4‐D. The dechlorination efficiency of 2,4‐D on nPd/Fe was only 56.4% in 210 min, while complete dechlorination could be achieved on SC‐nPd/Fe under the same conditions, and simultaneously 97.1% of phenoxyacetic acid (PA) was generated. Moreover, the effect of reaction conditions on the dechlorination such as Pd ratio, SC dosage, initial pH and temperature was also investigated, and it was well described by pseudo‐first‐order kinetic model. In particular, The chelating abilities of SC is similar to EDTA, but it is an environmentally‐friendly chelating agent. Findings from the present study suggested that the SC could be a promising substitute for application in the remediation of 2,4‐D contained water.

Abstract:AbstractSingle degradation systems based on dielectric barrier discharge plasma (DBDP) or persulfate (PS) oxidation cannot achieve the desired goals (high degradation efficiency, high mineralization rate, and low product toxicity) of degrading atrazine (ATZ) in river sediment. In this study, DBDP was combined with a PS oxidation system (DBDP/PS synergistic system) to degrade ATZ in river sediment. A Box–Behnken design (BBD) including five factors (discharge voltage, air flow, initial concentration, oxidizer dose, and activator dose) and three levels (− 1, 0, and 1) was established to test a mathematical model by response surface methodology (RSM). The results confirmed that the degradation efficiency of ATZ in river sediment was 96.5% in the DBDP/PS synergistic system after 10 min of degradation. The experimental total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency results indicated that 85.3% of ATZ is mineralized into CO2, H2O, and NH4+, which effectively reduces the possible biological toxicity of the intermediate products. Active species (sulfate (SO4•−), hydroxy (•OH), and superoxide (•O2−) radicals) were found to exert positive effects in the DBDP/PS synergistic system and illustrated the degradation mechanism of ATZ. The ATZ degradation pathway, composed of 7 main intermediates, was clarified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS). This study indicates that the DBDP/PS synergistic system is a highly efficient, environmentally friendly, novel method for the remediation of river sediment containing ATZ pollution.

Abstract:The technology of permeable reactive barriers is reliable and economically effective to prevent the spread of pollutants in groundwaters. Yet, it is efficacious only with easily reducible chemicals such as heavy metals and halogenated organics. In the present study, sulfidated zero-valent iron solventless synthesized by ball-milling is proposed as a possible barrier filling for activation of persulfate to achieve sound removal of reduction-resistant organic pollutants (the herbicide atrazine was used as a model pollutant). Preliminary batch experiments demonstrated rapid degradation of atrazine. Continuous experiments executed in columns proved the superior efficiency of sulfidated iron as a persulfate activator, compared to zero-valent iron, in terms of removal of both atrazine and byproducts. Optimal atrazine removal in the column was achieved with 10% sulfidated iron packing, and 9 mM persulfate at a hydraulic residence time of 6.02 h. Under such conditions, the estimated bed length of the reactive barrier for 99% atrazine removal was 8.69 cm. The morphology and surface-active species in the column demonstrated that activation of persulfate mainly occurred at the inlet of the column until the complete usage of the active species. Batch experiments with coexisting ions suggested that they have a minor influence on atrazine removal percentage, while Mg2+, Ca2+, CO2-and HCO- had a significant impact on the kinetics of the process. However, analogous column experiments demonstrated that the coexisting ions have a negative influence on both atrazine and its byproducts. The results obtained in this study corroborate the potential application of persulfate-enhanced permeable reactive barriers for in situ removal of atrazine from underground water.
Persulfate activation via iron sulfide nanoparticles for enhanced trichloroethylene degradation and its applications in groundwater remediation

Abstract:Trichloroethylene (TCE) is known for its carcinogenic properties and limited environmental degradation. Therefore, TCE degradation was carried out using a catalyzed system, i.e., an advanced oxidation process (AOP) for an aqueous solution. This study focuses on activating sodium persulfate (PS) by laboratory-synthesized iron sulfide nanoparticles (FeS-NPs) with a particle size of 115.17 nm for enhanced TCE degradation. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analyses were employed to investigate physio-chemical properties and surface morphologies of synthesized FeS-NPs catalyst. PS/FeS-NPs exhibited outstanding performance, achieving a remarkable degradation (99.07 %) of TCE in 60 min of reaction time, surpassing the degradation demonstrated by commercially available PS/FeS (25 %). The dominant involvement of Fe transformation and SO4•ˉ, OH•, and 1O2 radicals in TCE degradation was validated through scavenging and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) investigation. Moreover, the PS/FeS-NPs system was found efficient (97⁓99 %) in both acidic and basic solutions, although it is noteworthy that highly basic (pH 11) mediums may impact the degradation efficiency (13.8 %). Recycling and stability experiments revealed significant efficiency of the PS/FeS-NPs system during the second run (90.02 %) and third run (68.25 %). These core revelations validate the efficiency of FeS-NPs in TCE degradation in an aqueous solution. Conclusively, the PS/FeS-NPs system encouraged TCE degradation outcomes, depicting strong potential for prolonged benefits in the remediation of TCE-polluted water.

Abstract:Over the past decade, herbicides contaminated soil poses a serious threat to humans and environment. In this study, a novel biochar supported zero valent iron (BC-nZVI) was used as a heterogeneous catalyst activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of herbicide atrazine (ATZ) from soil. The results revealed that the removal of ATZ by BC-nZVI/PMS process was superior to that of BC/PMS or nZVI/PMS process. A synergistic effect between BC/PMS and nZVI/PMS processes has been successfully achieved in BC-nZVI/PMS process, and nearly 96% of ATZ removal was obtained at optimum reaction conditions. BC-nZVI/PMS process exhibited an excellent performace on ATZ removal compared with BC-nZVI/H2O2 or BC-nZVI/persulfate (PS) process. PMS decomposition by BC-nZVI/PMS process was higher than the sum of BC/PMS and nZVI/PMS processes. A low Cu concentration accelerated ATZ removal, and Cu was also effectively immobilized. SO4 − was the predominant reactive oxygen species responsible for ATZ degradation, and OH and 1O2 also took part in reaction. Four kinds of ATZ degradation products were identified, and ATZ degradation could be achieved through de-alkylation, dechlorination and hydroxylation processes. A reaction mechanism of PMS activation by BC-nZVI was proposed based on the synergistic effect of BC and nZVI. In addition to ATZ, coexisting pollutants such as 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), Cu and Cd were also simultaneously removed from soil.

Abstract:Advanced persulfate oxidation (AOPs) is a promising method for the degradation of organic pollutions, but the preparation of economic, high activity, and low toxicity non-heterogeneous catalysts is still difficult. In this study, a novel nanoscale zero-valent iron composite (nZVI@NBC) supported by biochar with nitrogen doping was prepared, applying activated peroxydisulfate (PDS) to degrade 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). Results demonstrated that nZVI@NBC/PDS system has a 11.8-fold higher degradation k obs of 2,4-DCP than the undoped nitrogen sample, and 2,4-DCP was entirely removed within 60 min. Through different analytical techniques, singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was the leading reactive oxygen species (ROS), and graphitic and pyridine nitrogen were the key nitrogen species to produce 1 O 2 . In addition, electrochemical texts and DFT calculation confirmed that nitrogen doping increased the catalyst's electrical conductivity, so that the 2,4-DCP adsorbed to the [nZVI@NBC-PDS] sub-stable complex was direct oxidation by electron transfer. Furthermore, the nZVI@NBC/PDS system exhibited high selectivity in the co-presence of inorganic anions and other pollutants and possessed excellent 2,4-DCP removal rates (> 95 % in pH 3–9). The column experiments demonstrated the high potential of nZVI@NBC to remove 2,4-DCP in groundwater. The mechanism of activation of PDS and degradation of organic contaminants by nZVI@NBC, provide a new approach for the remediating the groundwater pollution.

Unraveling Different Mechanisms of Persulfate Activation by Graphite Felt Anode and Cathode to Destruct Contaminants of Emerging Concern

Abstract:The electro-activation of persulfate (PS) by graphite felt (GF) electrode is a novel advanced oxidation process applied for the degradation of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). Both GF anode and cathode can electro-activate PS to degrade CECs, including atrazine (ATZ), bisphenol S, ethinylestradiol, and ibuprofen. The study examines the removal performance of ATZ in sulfate, nitrate, and perchlorate electrolyte. The degradation of ATZ followed the order of sulfate (36.3 L (Ah)(-1)) > perchlorate (22.2 L (Ah)(-1)) > nitrate (5.8 L (Ah)(-1)) in GF anode/PS system, while electrolytes had little influence on the degradation of ATZ (15.8-21.3 L (Ah)(-1)) in GF cathode/PS system. The mechanisms of PS electro-activation by GF anode and GF cathode were compared and investigated for the first time, through kinetic experiments, radical identification, and products analysis. Quenching experiments demonstrated that O-2(center dot-) and O-1(2) were generated in GF cathode/PS and GF anode/PS systems respectively, besides HO center dot and SO4 center dot-. Degradation pathways of ATZ in these two systems showed slight difference, and a total of eight transformation products of ATZ were identified. Acute toxicity of the treated ATZ solution decreased at the beginning and then increased in both systems at electric charge of 0.11 Ah L-1. Furthermore, both GF electrodes/PS systems exhibited satisfactory performance for actual effluent from wastewater treatment plants in the presence of 30 mM perchlorate (with ATZ removal of 78% at electric charge of 0.11 Ah L-1), leaving a potential possibility for its practical application.
Fast degradation of atrazine by nZVI-Cu 0 /PMS: Re-evaluation and quantification of reactive species, generation pathways, and application feasibility

Abstract:Additive metal to zero-valent iron (ZVI) could enhance the reduction ability and the additive Cu 0 was incorporated to ZVI to accelerate PMS activation with atrazine (ATZ) as target compound. The efficiencies of ATZ degradation and PMS decomposition climbed up firstly and then declined as Cu 0 loading increased from 0.01 to 1.00 wt% with the maximums at 0.10 wt%. SO 4 •− , HO • , Fe(IV), O 2 •− and 1 O 2 were generated by nZVI-Cu 0 /PMS based on the results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and simultaneous degradation of nitrobenzene, ATZ, and methyl phenyl sulfoxide (PMSO). The rate constant of Fe(IV) and ATZ was estimated as 7 × 10 4 M −1 ∙s −1 via the variation of methyl phenyl sulfone (PMSO 2 )formation at different ATZ concentrations. However, Fe(IV) contributed negligibly to ATZ degradation due to the strong scavenging of Fe(IV) by PMS. SO 4 •− and HO • were the reactive species responsible for ATZ degradation and the yield ratio of SO 4 •− and HO • was about 8.70 at initial stage. Preliminary thermodynamic calculation on the possible activation ways revealed that the dominant production of SO 4 •− might originate from the atomic H reduction of PMS in the surface layer of nZVI-Cu 0 . Ten products of ATZ degradation were identified by HPLC/ESI/QTOF and the possible degradation pathways were analyzed combined with theoretical calculation on ATZ structure. The decrease of temperature or increase of solution pH led to the decline of ATZ degradation, as well as the individual addition of common ions (HCO 3 − , Cl − , SO 4 2− , NH 4 + , NO 3 − and F − ) and natural organic matters (NOM). In real water, ATZ was still efficiently degraded with the decontamination efficiency decreasing in the sequence of tap water > surface water > simulated wastewater > groundwater. For the treatment of ATZ-polluted continuous flow, nZVI-Cu 0 in double-layer layout had a higher capacity than the single-layer mode. Meanwhile, the leaching TFe and TCu were limited. The results indicate nZVI-Cu 0 /PMS is applicable and the multiple-layer layout of nZVI-Cu 0 is suggested for ATZ-polluted ground water and soil remediation.

Abstract:Effectively scavenging combined pollutants in complex water matrix via dominant electron transfer pathway using modified zero-valent iron (ZVI) remains challenging. Herein, novel iron-based catalysts were synthesized using ball milling and pre-oxidation modified biochar (MOBC), which featured abundant pore structure and oxygen-rich functional moieties to support nZVI in activating persulfate (PS). The most suitable catalytic system achieved ultrafast simultaneous removal of 89.0 % of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and nearly 100 % of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) within 5 min (with nearly complete removal of SMZ and Cr(VI) in 60 min). By serving as an electron shuttle, MOBC700 could accelerate electron transfer from SMX to PS adsorbed on the nZVI1.0@MOBC700 for SMX decomposition, with reactive oxygen species (ROSs) also contributing. Moreover, nZVI facilitated the reduction of Cr(VI) adsorbed on nZVI1.0@MOBC700 through electron transfer. The dissolved Fe(II) generated via PS activation and Cr(VI) reduction further facilitated Cr(VI) removal from the solution, while the gradual consumption of excess Fe(II) ensured continued ROSs-mediated degradation of SMX. Additionally, the system also demonstrated resistance to interference from NO-3, CO2-3 , and humic acid, and was effective in remediating four different water samples. Overall, this study presents a promising method for designing iron-char composites to address combined antibiotic and heavy metal contamination in groundwater samples via dominant electron transfer process.

Abstract:In this study, we synthesized a high removal efficiency catalyst using biochar-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron and g-C 3 N 4 , denoted as g-C 3 N 4 /nZVI@SBC, to activate persulfate (PS) for the degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) in groundwater. We characterized the morphology and physiochemical properties of g-C 3 N 4 /nZVI@SBC with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), BET surface area analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). To assess the performance of the g-C 3 N 4 /nZVI@SBC catalyst, we investigated various reaction parameters, such as the mass ratio of g-C 3 N 4 to nZVI@SBC, PS concentration, initial pH, initial TPH concentration, and the presence of coexisting ions in the system. The results from batch experiments and repeated use trials indicate that g-C 3 N 4 /nZVI@SBC exhibited both excellent catalytic activation capability and impressive durability, making it a promising choice for TPH degradation. Specifically, when the PS concentration reached 1 mM, the catalyst dosage was 0.3 g/L, and the g-C 3 N 4 to nZVI@SBC mass ratio was 2, we achieved a remarkable TPH removal efficiency of 93.8%. Through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) testing and quenching experiments, we identified sulfate radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and superoxide radicals as the primary active substance involved in the TPH degradation process. Moreover, the g-C 3 N 4 /nZVI@SBC composite proved highly effective for in-situ TPH removal from groundwater and displayed an 86% removal rate, making it a valuable candidate for applications in permeable reactive barriers (PRB) aimed at enhancing environmental remediation. In summary, by skillfully utilizing g-C 3 N 4 /nZVI@SBC, this study has made notable advancements in synthesis and characterization, presenting a feasible and innovative approach to addressing TPH pollution in groundwater.

Abstract:Sulfide-modified nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI-S) has been considered as a promising material for in-situ chemical reduction processes (ISCRPs) for groundwater remediation. However, studies utilizing NZVI-S for in-situ chemical oxidation processes (ISCOPs) were relative rare. In this study, NZVI-S was synthesized and utilized to activate persulfate (PS) for the degradation of TCE. The effects of Fe/S molar ratio, initial pH on TCE removal and dechlorination by NZVI-S activated PS were studied. The results showed that, compared with bare NZVI, NZVI-S showed better properties in activating PS which included better pH adaptiveness, higher TCE removal and mineralization efficiency, and faster removal rate. The Fe/S molar ratio significantly influenced the TCE degradation, and the highest TCE degradation was observed at Fe/S molar ratio of 25–30. The underlying mechanisms of NZVI-S exceling NZVI in activating PS were elucidated through spectroscopic analyses that accounted for the higher iron dissolution rates and iron sulfides (e.g., FeS and FeSx) generated on its surface, which elevated the quantity and accelerated the transfer rate of electrons for activating PS. Besides, hydroxyl radical was observed as a dominant reactive radical in degrading TCE at various pH conditions, but sulfate radical also played an important part especially under acidic condition. Finally, the degradation products of TCE were analyzed and the possible pathways of TCE degradation were illustrated. And the slight influence of natural substances in groundwater on the degradation process suggests NZVI-S activated PS would be a promising approach for groundwater remediation.
Surfactant-assisted biodegradation of nitrobenzene in groundwater by sulfided nano-zero valent iron activated persulfate: Synergistic effect, mechanism, and application

Abstract:Groundwater contamination by dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs), particularly nitrobenzene, represents a significant environmental challenge due to their chemical stability, persistence, and low solubility. This study aims to develop a synergistic approach for the biodegradation of nitrobenzene in groundwater, leveraging a combined system of Tween 80-assisted solubilization, sulfidized nano-zero valent iron (S-nZVI), and persulfate (PS) activation. The reduction process is facilitated by S-nZVI, while PS activation generates strong oxidizing radicals, and Tween 80 enhances nitrobenzene solubilization, thus improving the overall treatment efficacy. Laboratory experiments, including both batch and column studies, were conducted to evaluate the performance of this approach. Furthermore, a persulfate slow-release gel system was introduced to provide sustained activation, leading to improved long-term degradation efficiency. The results demonstrated that the synergistic combination of S-nZVI, PS, and Tween 80 led to significantly enhanced degradation of nitrobenzene and its byproduct aniline, achieving degradation rates of up to 96.74% for nitrobenzene and 100% for aniline after 6 h under optimal conditions. Additionally, the oxidation rate of aniline reached 91.53% within 5 min when the optimal dosage of 1.2 mM PS was used. The Tween-80/S-nZVI/PS slow-release gel system further achieved cumulative degradation rates of 87.49% for nitrobenzene over 14 pore volumes in a column study, demonstrating its potential for practical applications in groundwater remediation. These findings provide a promising new direction for the remediation of contaminated groundwater.

Abstract:A facile, green and easily-scalable method of synthesizing stable and effective nano zero-valent iron (nZVI)‑carbon composites for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was highly desirable for in-situ groundwater remediation. This study developed a two-step hydrothermally assisted carbothermal reduction method to prepare nZVI-encapsulated carbon composite (Fe@C) using rice straw and ferric nitrate as precursors. The hydrothermal reactions were conducive to iron loading, and carbothermal temperature was crucial for the aromatization and graphitization of hydrothermal carbonaceous products, the reductive transformation of iron oxides into nZVI and the development of porous structure in composites. At carbothermal temperature of 800 °C following hydrothermal reactions, the stable Fe@C800 with nZVI encapsulated in the spherical carbon shell was obtained and exhibited the best catalytic performance for PMS activation and the degradation of monochlorobenzene (MCB) in a wide range of pH values (3-11) with removal efficiency after 120 min reaction and first-order kinetic rate constant (k1) of 98.7% and 0.087 min-1 respectively under the optimum conditions of 10 mM PMS and 0.2 g·L-1 Fe@C800. The inhibiting effects of common co-existed anions (i.e., Cl-, HCO3- and H2PO4-) and humic acid in groundwater on the removal of MCB in Fe@C800/PMS system was also investigated. Both OH-dominated radical processes and nonradical pathways involving 1O2 and surface electron transfers were accounted for PMS activation and MCB removal. The inner nZVI was protected by the carbon shell, endowing Fe@C800 with high reactivity and good reusability. Additionally, 81.2% and 73.5% of MCB removal rates were achieved in tap water and actual contaminated groundwater respectively. This study not only provided a novel strategy to synthesize highly effective and stable nZVI‑carbon composites using the agricultural biomass waste for PMS induced oxidation of organic contaminants in groundwater, but also enhanced the understanding on the activation mechanism of iron‑carbon based catalysts towards PMS.

Abstract:The conversion of somatic cells into pluripotent cells is transforming the way diseases are researched and treated. Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells' promise may soon be realized in the field of hematology, as hematopoietic stem cell transplants are already commonplace in clinics around the world. We provide a current comparison between induced pluripotent and embryonic stem cells, describe progress toward modeling hematological disorders using iPS cells, and illustrate the hurdles that must be overcome before iPS cell therapies will be available in clinics.

Abstract:Nowadays, clean-up of heavy metals and pesticides from environment has received great attention. A green biochar iron composite (PC-ZVI) was successfully synthesized using pomelo peel residues and FeCl3 solution. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was introduced into the PC-ZVI system for Cr(VI) and atrazine (AE) removal, and results showed that PMS greatly promoted Cr(VI) and AE removal. The presence of oxalic acid (OA) could maintain a relatively high dissolved Fe2+ species for Cr(VI) reduction and AE oxidation in the PC-ZVI/PMS process. The contribution order of reactive oxygen species followed as HO• > SO4 •- greater than1O2 > O2 •− in both Cr(VI) and AE removal by PC-ZVI/PMS/OA process. A total of six intermediates products of AE degradation were detected, and AE molecular was effectively degraded into CO2, H2O, inorganic N and Cl through hydroxylation, substitution and de-alkylation processes. The underlying mechanism of Cr(VI) and AE removal by PC-ZVI/PMS/OA process was also proposed. Most Cr(VI) species were transformed into Cr2O3 and Cr(OH)3 through reduction and precipitation processes. PC-ZVI has a relatively high recyclability toward both Cr(VI) and AE removal from solutions. The potential toxicity of PC-ZVI solution was small at three PC-ZVI dosages levels, and the corresponding toxicity of AE reaction solution by PC-ZVI/PMS/OA process decreased as reaction time increased. The order of both Cr(VI) and AE removal in different water systems was tap water > river water > lake water > wastewater, and this PC-ZVI/PMS/OA process exhibited the better adaptability in application for several actual water environments.

Abstract:A novel sulfur-modified Fe3O4 composite (SF10) with excellent magnetic properties was prepared via a solvothermal method. Compared with unmodified Fe3O4, SF10 exhibited excellent performance on the activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) for atrazine degradation and maintained good reusability. According to the quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test, hydroxyl radical (•OH) and sulfate radical (SO4 •−) were the main active species. Notably, comprehensive characterization of the morphology, crystal structure, electrochemical analysis, and surface chemical composite revealed that sulfur modification introduced pyrite and pyrrhotite phases into Fe3O4 structure to improve its catalytic activity and electron transfer capacity. Density functional theory calculations showed that sulfur modification enhanced the electron transfer from Fe3O4 to PDS and the adsorption of PDS on the catalyst surface, which was beneficial for the activation of PDS. Moreover, the surface reducing sulfur species (≡S2− and ≡S2 2−) acted as the electron donor for Fe(II) regeneration, driving a faster Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle of SF10 for the activation of PDS. This study provides a further understanding of the synergism between sulfur and iron, and broadens the application of Fe3O4 in PDS-based advanced oxidation processes for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Persulfate (PS) activated by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) integrated with microbubbles (MBs) was designed to decompose atrazine (ATZ) from aqueous solutions. The degradation efficiency reached 89% at a discharge power of 85 W, a PS concentration of 1 mM, and a air flow rate of 30 mL/min after 75 min treatment. Heat caused by DBD favoured ATZ removal. Besides, the effect of PS dosage, discharge power and initial pH values on ATZ removal was evaluated. The calculated energy yield revealed that it was economical and promising to treat 1 L of ATZ-wastewaters. The existence of SO42−, Cl−, CO32− and HCO3− lead to negative effects, while positive effect was observed when the presence of MBs and humic acid. The identification results of radicals and degradation intermediates suggested that multiple synergistic effects (such as heat, eaq− and H•) activated PS, and 1O2/reactive nitrogen species, •OH and SO4−• with contributions of 18%, 26%, and 29%, were main species attacking ATZ. ATZ degradation pathways including olefination, alkylic-oxidation, dealkylation, and dechlorination were proposed. An environment-friendly and a novel method for enhancing the PS-activation and ATZ-decomposition was provided, which fully utilised the electric-chemical conversion of DBD and high mass transfer efficiency of MBs.

Abstract:Effective remediation of pesticide-contaminated sites is challenging due to high concentrations of pollutants with complete habitat destruction. Herein, microwave (MW)-activated persulfate (PS) system was proposed for remediation of organochlorine pesticide contaminated soil with atrazine (ATZ) as representation. The results revealed that the MW/PS system could achieve 97.9% of ATZ (50 mg/kg) degradation after treatment of 60 min, superior to that by conventional heat-activated PS. And more excellent degradation performance was identified in relatively higher microwave temperature (80 °C) with appropriate PS concentration (24 mmol/L), MW power (400 W) and water-soil ratio (1:1). Moreover, the MW/PS system possessed high tolerance to co-existing substances including C l − , H C O 3 − and H 2 P O 4 − , and appropriate organic substance content favored ATZ degradation in soil. Reactive oxygen species consisting of S O 4 • − , O H • , O 2 • − and 1O2 contributed to ATZ decomposition, among which O 2 ∙ − played a principal role. The ATZ degradation pathway was then elucidated by combination of HPLC/MS spectra and DFT calculations, and ATZ overall toxicity was effectively alleviated in MW/PS system in term of toxicity assessment. Additionally, the MW/PS system presented high-performance degradation on such organochlorine pesticides as trichloro ethylene, tetrachloride, hexachlorobenzene and chlordane, suggesting great potentials of this system for remediation of organochlorine pesticides contaminated sites.
