Abstract:Recently, a significant amount of attention has been attracted toward a third classification of magnetism, altermagnetism, due to the unique physical properties of altermagnetic materials, which are compensated collinear antiferromagnets that host time-reversal symmetry-breaking phenomena like a ferromagnet. In an altermagnetic material, through the nonrelativistic altermagnetic spin-splitting effect (ASSE), a transverse spin current is generated upon charge current injection. However, it is very challenging to experimentally establish the ASSE since it is inevitably mixed with the spin Hall effect due to the relativistic spin-orbit coupling of the material. Additionally, the dependence on the hard-to-probe and hard-to-control Néel vectors makes it even more difficult to observe and establish the ASSE. In this Letter, we utilize the thermal spin injection from the ferrimagnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet and detect an inverse altermagnetic spin-splitting effect (IASSE) in the high-quality epitaxial altermagnetic RuO_{2} thin films. We observe an opposite sign for the spin-to-charge conversion through the IASSE compared to the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE). The efficiency of the IASSE is approximately 70% of the ISHE in RuO_{2}. Moreover, we demonstrate that the ASSE or IASSE effect is observable only when the Néel vectors are well aligned. By modifying the Néel vector domains via RuO_{2} crystallinity, we study the ASSE or IASSE unequivocally and quantitatively. Our Letter provides significant insight into the spin-splitting effect in altermagnetic materials.
Simultaneous High Charge‐Spin Conversion Efficiency and Large Spin Diffusion Length in Altermagnetic RuO2

Abstract:Efficient spin sources with large spin Hall angle (theta(SH)) and long spin diffusion length (lambda(SD)) are highly desired in the application of spintronic devices. However, due to strong spin-orbit coupling, the two targets can hardly be achieved simultaneously in conventional relativistic spin sources, like heavy metals. Here, it is proven that collinear antiferromagnetic RuO2 films are able to address this key issue and break the inverse relationship of theta(SH) versus lambda(SD). Based on spin torque-ferromagnetic resonance and spin pumping measurements, the authors demonstrate that the theta SH of RuO2(100) films is 0.183, and the lambda(SD) is over 12 nm being an order of magnitude longer than that of Pt, beta-W, and beta-Ta. Meanwhile, sizable lambda SD is also obtained in spin current with out-of-plane spin polarization generated by RuO2(101) films. By conducting a control experiment, the nonrelativistic altermagnetic spin splitting effect (ASSE) is ascertained to be the crucial mechanism accounting for the simultaneous large theta(SH) and long lambda(SD) in RuO2. Besides the fundamental significance, these findings will advance the development of spintronics towards higher efficiency and lower power consumption.

Abstract:The direct and inverse altermagnetic spin splitting effects (ASSE) in the (101)‐oriented RuO2 film with the tilted Néel vector, as well as the crystal direction‐dependent anisotropic behavior, confirm the presence of ASSE in the (101)‐RuO2. Furthermore, the observation of temperature‐dependent characteristics of ASSE and spin pumping signals confirm a dominated spin splitting in RuO2 at lower temperatures. Recently, the altermagnetic materials with spin splitting effect (SSE), have drawn significant attention due to their potential to the flexible control of the spin polarization by the Néel vector. Here, the direct and inverse altermagnetic SSE (ASSE) in the (101)‐oriented RuO2 film with the tilted Néel vector are reported. First, the spin torque along the x‐, y‐, and z‐axis is detected from the spin torque‐induced ferromagnetic resonance (ST‐FMR), and the z‐spin torque emerges when the electric current is along the [010] direction, showing the anisotropic spin splitting of RuO2. Further, the current‐induced modulation of damping is used to quantify the damping‐like torque efficiency (ξDL) in RuO2/Py, and an anisotropic ξDL is obtained and maximized for the current along the [010] direction, which increases with the reduction of the temperature, indicating the present of ASSE. Next, by way of spin pumping measurement, the inverse altermagnetic spin splitting effect (IASSE) is studied, which also shows a crystal direction‐dependent anisotropic behavior and temperature‐dependent behavior. This work gives a comprehensive study of the direct and inverse ASSE effects in the altermagnetic RuO2, inspiring future altermagnetic materials and devices with flexible control of spin polarization.

Spin Splitting in Altermagnetic RuO$_2$ Enables Field-free Spin-Orbit Torque Switching via Dominant Out-of-Plane Spin Polarization

Abstract:Researchers have recently identified a novel class of magnetism, termed "altermagnetism", which exhibits characteristics of both ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. Here, we report a groundbreaking discovery of efficient field-free spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching in a RuO$_2$ (101)/Co/Pt/Co/Pt/Ta structure. Our results demonstrate that the spin current flows along the [100] axis, induced by the in-plane charge current, with the spin polarization direction aligned parallel to the Néel vector. These z-polarized spins generate an out-of-plane anti-damping torque, enabling deterministic switching of the Co/Pt layer without the necessity of an external magnetic field. The altermagnetic spin splitting effect (ASSE) in RuO$_2$ promotes the generation of spin currents with pronounced anisotropic behavior, maximized when the charge current flows along the [010] direction. This unique capability yields the highest field-free switching ratio, maintaining stable SOT switching within an external field range of approximately 400 Oe. Notably, ASSE dominates the spin current, especially when the current is aligned with the [010] direction ({\theta} = 90°). Here, the spin polarization component creates a substantial field-like effective field, surpassing the damping-like field from . This highlights the crucial role of in enhancing spin-torque efficiency and elucidating spin flow modulation mechanics in this crystalline context. Our study highlights the potential of RuO$_2$ as a powerful spin current generator, paving the way for practical applications in spin-torque switching technologies and other cutting-edge spintronic devices.

Abstract:The spin‐charge conversion induced in the antiferromagnet RuO2 with spin‐splitting energy band structure has recently attracted widespread interest. Herein, inverse altermagnetic spin splitting effect (IASSE), a new mechanism of terahertz emission, is introduced, and this study systematically demonstrates in‐plane anisotropic terahertz emission from an annealed RuO2/Py bilayer due to the combination of relativistic inverse spin Hall effect and nonrelativistic IASSE. The relativistic inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) plays a pivotal role in terahertz (THz) emission in magnet/heavy metal bilayers. Here, THz emission from RuO2/Py bilayers is reported due to not only the relativistic ISHE but also the nonrelativistic inverse altermagnetic spin splitting effect (IASSE) in RuO2. For the (100)‐oriented RuO2/Py bilayers, the THz emission is greatly enhanced owing to IASSE once the polarization direction of the spin current (from the Py layer induced by pump laser) is parallel to the Néel vector of RuO2, producing the anisotropic THz emission with twofold symmetry. In contrast, the RuO2(110)/Py bilayer only exhibits isotropic THz emission because of the absence of IASSE‐induced spin‐charge conversion in the (110)‐oriented RuO2 films. Apart from the fundamental significance of exploring the IASSE‐induced spin‐to‐charge conversion, the finding also enriches the physical mechanism and modulation method of THz emission in spintronic systems.

Observation of Giant Spin Splitting and d-wave Spin Texture in Room Temperature Altermagnet RuO2

Abstract:Recently, a novel magnetic phase called altermagnetism has been proposed, ushering in a third distinct magnetic phase beyond ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. It is expected that this groundbreaking phase exhibits unique physical properties such as C-paired spin-valley locking, anomalous Hall effect, nontrivial Berry phase, and giant magnetoresistance, etc. Among all the predicted candidates, several room temperature altermagnets are suggested to host significant potential applications in the near future. Nevertheless, direct evidence about the spin pattern of the room temperature altermagnet is still unrevealed. Previous studies found that RuO2 is identified as the most promising candidate for room temperature d-wave altermagnetism, exhibiting a substantial spin splitting of up to 1.4 eV. In this study, utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we report experimental observation of the spin splitting in RuO2. Furthermore, employing spin-ARPES, we directly observed the d-wave spin pattern. Our results unequivocally show that RuO2 is a perfect d-wave altermagnet with great potential for upcoming spintronic applications.

Non-linear anomalous Edelstein response at altermagnetic interfaces

Abstract:In altermagnets, time-reversal symmetry breaking spin-polarizes electronic states, while total magnetization remains zero. In addition, at altermagnetic surfaces Rashba-spin orbit coupling is activated due to broken inversion symmetry, introducing a competing spin-momentum locking interaction. Here we show that their interplay leads to the formation of complex, chiral spin textures that offer novel, non-linear spin-to-charge conversion properties. Whereas altermagnetic order suppresses the canonical linear in-plane Rashba-Edelstein response, we establish the presence of an anomalous transversal Edelstein effect for planar applied electric and magnetic field, or alternatively, an in-plane magnetization. Moreover the non-linear Edelstein response resulting purely from electric fields also triggers the anomalous out-of-plane magnetization. We determine the anomalous response with a model based on the ab-initio electronic structure of RuO$_2$ bilayers, ultimately opening experimental avenues to explore spin-charge conversion phenomena at altermagnetic interfaces.

Efficient Spin Seebeck and Spin Nernst Effects of Magnons in Altermagnets

Abstract:We report two non-degenerate magnon modes with opposite spins or chiralities in collinearly antiferromagnetic insulators driven by symmetry-governed anisotropic exchange couplings. The consequent giant spin splitting contributes to spin Seebeck and spin Nernst effects generating longitudinal and transverse spin currents when the temperature gradient applies along and away from the main crystal axis, without requiring any external magnetic field and spin-orbit coupling. Based on first-principle calculations, we predict feasible material candidates holding robust altermagnetic spin configurations and room-temperature structural stability to efficiently transport spin. The spin Seebeck conductivity is comparable to the records of antiferromagnets that require the magnetic field, and the spin Nernst conductivity is two orders in magnitude larger than that in antiferromagnetic monolayers that need Berry curvature.

Abstract:Rutile RuO_2 has been posited as a potential d-wave altermagnetism candidate, with a predicted significant spin splitting up to 1.4 eV. Despite accumulating theoretical predictions and transport measurements, direct spectroscopic observation of spin splitting has remained elusive. Here, we employ spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the band structures and spin polarization of thin-film and single-crystal RuO_2. Contrary to expectations of altermagnetism, our analysis indicates that RuO_2's electronic structure aligns with those predicted under non-magnetic conditions, exhibiting no evidence of the hypothesized spin splitting. Additionally, we observe significant in-plane spin polarization of the low-lying bulk bands, which is antisymmetric about the high-symmetry plane and contrary to the d-wave spin texture due to time-reversal symmetry breaking in altermagnetism. These findings definitively challenge the altermagnetic order previously proposed for rutile RuO_2, prompting a reevaluation of its magnetic properties.
Non-trivial charge-to-spin conversion in ferromagnetic metal/Cu/Al2O3 by orbital transport

Abstract:Efficient spin/charge interconversion is desired to develop innovative spin-based devices. So far, the interconversion has been performed by using heavy atomic elements, strong spin-orbit interaction of which realizes the interconversion through the spin Hall effect and the Edelstein effect. We demonstrate highly efficient charge-to-spin conversion in a ferromagnetic metal/Cu/Al2O3 trilayers, which do not contain any heavy element. The resulting spin torque efficiency is higher than those of conventional spin Hall and Rashba systems consisting of heavy elements such as Pt and Bi. Our experimental results qualitatively deviate from typical behaviors arising from spin transport. However, they are surprisingly consistent with the behaviors arising from the orbital transport. Our results thus demonstrate a new direction for efficient charge-to-spin conversion through the orbital transport.

Abstract:Current-induced spin torques provide efficient data writing approaches for magnetic memories. Recently, the spin splitting torque (SST) was theoretically predicted (R. Gonz\'alez-Hern\'andez et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 127701 (2021)), which combines advantages of conventional spin transfer torque (STT) and spin-orbit torque (SOT) as well as enables controllable spin polarization. Here we provide the experimental evidence of SST in collinear antiferromagnet RuO2 films. The spin current direction is found to be correlated to the crystal orientation of RuO2 and the spin polarization direction is dependent on (parallel to) the N\'eel vector. These features are quite characteristic for the predicted SST. Our finding not only present a new member for the spin torques besides traditional STT and SOT, but also proposes a promising spin source RuO2 for spintronics.
Helicity controlled spin Hall angle in the 2D Rashba altermagnets

Abstract:We investigate the efficiency of charge-to-spin conversion in two-dimensional Rashba altermagnets, a class of materials that merge characteristics of both ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. Utilizing quantum linear response theory, we quantify the longitudinal and spin Hall conductivities in this system and demonstrate that a substantial enhancement of the spin Hall angle is achieved below the band crossing point through the dual effects of relativistic spin-orbit interaction and nonrelativistic altermagnetic exchange interaction. Additionally, we find that skew scattering and topology-related intrinsic mechanisms are almost negligible in this system, which contrasts with conventional ferromagnetic Rashba systems. Our findings not only advance the understanding of spin dynamics in Rashba altermagnets but also pave the way for novel strategies in manipulating charge-to-spin conversion via the sophisticated control of noncollinear in-plane and collinear out-of-plane spin textures.

Abstract:The recently discovered altermagnets exhibit collinear magnetic order with zero net magnetization but with unconventional spin-polarized d/g/i-wave band structures, expanding the known paradigms of ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. In addition to novel current-driven electronic transport effects, the unconventional time-reversal symmetry breaking in these systems also makes it possible to obtain a spin response to linearly polarized fields in the optical frequency domain. We show through ab-initio calculations of the prototypical d-wave altermagnet RuO$_2$, with $[C_2\|C_{4z}]$ symmetry combining twofold spin rotation with fourfold lattice rotation, that there is an optical analogue of a spin splitter effect, as the coupling to a linearly polarized exciting laser field makes the d-wave character of the altermagnet directly visible. By magneto-optical measurements on RuO$_2$ films of a few nanometer thickness, we demonstrate the predicted connection between the polarization of an ultrashort pump pulse and the sign and magnitude of a persistent optically excited electronic spin polarization. Our results point to the possibility of exciting and controlling the electronic spin polarization in altermagnets by such ultrashort optical pulses. In addition, the possibility of exciting an electronic spin polarization by linearly polarized optical fields in a compensated system is a unique consequence of the altermagnetic material properties, and our experimental results therefore present an indication for the existence of an altermagnetic phase in ultrathin RuO$_2$ films.

Anatomy of spin Hall effect in ferromagnetic metals

Abstract:The spin Hall effect in nonmagnetic materials has been intensively studied and became one of the most crucial spin-charge conversion mechanism in spintronics. However, the spin Hall effect in ferromagnetic metals has been less investigated and remains unclear. In this work, we investigate the spin Hall effect in representative ferromagnetic alloy by using first-principles calculations. We first clarify the spin Hall effect into three different types including conventional (CSHE), spin anomalous (SAHE) and magnetic spin Hall effect (MSHE) and then calculate the corresponding spin Hall conductivity and spin Hall angle for (Fe, Co, Ni)Pt, NiFe and CoFe alloy. We find the above three spin Hall mechanisms do coexist in ferromagnetic metals. Particularly, for Pt-based ferromagnetic alloy, a sizable conventional and magnetic spin Hall angles comparable to that of Pt have been predicted. The remarkable unconventional spin Hall effect in ferromagnetic metal may enrich the spin-charge conversion phenomena. For instance, the spin current generated by remarkable MSHE with out-of-plane spin-polarization should be helpful for field-free switching of perpendicular magnetization through spin-orbit torque effect. This work may stimulate future studies on the spin Hall effect in ferromagnetic metals and pave their promising applications for spin-charge conversion devices in spintronics.

Abstract:Electric currents carrying a net spin polarization are widely used in spintronics, whereas globally spin-neutral currents are expected to play no role in spin-dependent phenomena. Here we show that, in contrast to this common expectation, spin-independent conductance in compensated antiferromagnets and normal metals can be efficiently exploited in spintronics, provided their magnetic space group symmetry supports a non-spin-degenerate Fermi surface. Due to their momentum-dependent spin polarization, such antiferromagnets can be used as active elements in antiferromagnetic tunnel junctions (AFMTJs) and produce a giant tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) effect. Using RuO2 as a representative compensated antiferromagnet exhibiting spin-independent conductance along the [001] direction but a non-spin-degenerate Fermi surface, we design a RuO2/TiO2/RuO2 (001) AFMTJ, where a globally spin-neutral charge current is controlled by the relative orientation of the Néel vectors of the two RuO2 electrodes, resulting in the TMR effect as large as ~500%. These results are expanded to normal metals which can be used as a counter electrode in AFMTJs with a single antiferromagnetic layer or other elements in spintronic devices. Our work uncovers an unexplored potential of the materials with no global spin polarization for utilizing them in spintronics.
Efficient spin to charge conversion and spin memory loss mitigation in oriented $\text{RuO}_2$ films

Its ability to produce large spin-orbit torques and spin Hall effects is key for energy-efficient magnetic memory and logic devices. Additionally, the tunable thickness and crystallinity of $\text{RuO}_2$ thin films optimize torque efficiency for low-power switching. Spin pumping, a versatile method for investigating spin dynamics in $\text{RuO}_2$ thin films, has garnered considerable interest because of its straightforward, non-invasive and uncomplicated approach to addressing impedance mismatch and direct measurement of spintronic parameters. Here we present a systematic and detailed analysis on the efficient spin to charge conversion in (110)-oriented $\text{RuO}_2$ films with amorphous CoFeB as spin source. The spin Hall angle, and spin diffusion length were estimated to be 0.14 $\pm$ 0.01 and 4.58 $\pm$ 0.40 nm, respectively. The spin Hall conductivity of 998.89 $\pm$ 58.23 $\hbar \cdot \frac{\Omega^{-1} \, \text{cm}^{-1}}{e}$ has been estimated which is theoretically predicted to be of the similar order. The interfacial spin transparency has been achieved to be 90%. We have shown that the spin memory loss at the $\text{RuO}_2$/CoFeB interface is 15%, which is very small.

Abstract:Antiferromagnets (AFs) are prospective for next-generation high-density and high-speed spintronic applications due to their negligible stray field and ultrafast spin dynamics, notwithstanding the challenges in detecting and manipulating AF order with no magnetization (M = 0). Among the AFs, non-collinear AFs are of particular interest because of their unique properties arising from the non-collinear spin structure and the small magnetization M. In this work, we describe the recently observed vector spin Seebeck effect in non-collinear LuFeO$_3$, where the magneto-thermovoltage under an in-plane temperature gradient, not previously observed, is consistent with the predicted spin swapping effect. Our results shed light on the importance of the non-collinear spin structure in the emerging spin phenomena in non-collinear AFs and offer a new class of materials for AF spintronics and spin caloritronics.

Abstract:Precise and ultrafast control over photo-induced charge currents across nanoscale interfaces could lead to important applications in energy harvesting, ultrafast electronics, and coherent terahertz sources. Recent studies have shown that several relativistic mechanisms, including inverse spin-Hall effect, inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect and inverse spin-orbit-torque effect, can convert longitudinally injected spin-polarized currents from magnetic materials to transverse charge currents, thereby harnessing these currents for terahertz generation. However, these mechanisms typically require external magnetic fields and suffer from low spin-polarization rates and low efficiencies of relativistic spin-to-charge conversion. In this work, we present a novel nonrelativistic and nonmagnetic mechanism that directly utilizes the photo-excited high-density charge currents across the interface. We demonstrate that the electrical anisotropy of conductive oxides RuO2 and IrO2 can effectively deflect injected charge currents to the transverse direction, resulting in efficient and broadband terahertz radiation. Importantly, this new mechanism has the potential to offer much higher conversion efficiency compared to previous methods, as conductive materials with large electrical anisotropy are readily available, whereas further increasing the spin-Hall angle of heavy-metal materials would be challenging. Our new findings offer exciting possibilities for directly utilizing these photo-excited high-density currents across metallic interfaces for ultrafast electronics and terahertz spectroscopy.
