Abstract:Intraoperative periprosthetic fractures are challenging complications that may affect implant stability and survivorship. Periprosthetic acetabular fractures are uncommon and infrequently are the focus of studies. Acetabular fractures are occasionally recognized after patients report unremitting groin pain weeks postoperatively. The widespread use of cementless acetabular cups might lead to higher number of fractures than is clinically detectable. Conversely, the incidence of intraoperative periprosthetic femoral fractures are more common and encompass a broad spectrum, ranging from a small cortical perforation to displaced fractures with an unstable prosthesis. Appropriate recognition, including mindfulness of preoperative patient and surgical risk factors, is critical to the successful management of acetabular and femoral complications. This comprehensive review article focuses on the incidence, patient and surgical risk factors, diagnosis, management, and clinical outcomes associated with intraoperative acetabular and femur fractures in primary total hip arthroplasty.

Total Knee Replacement for Posttraumatic Degenerative Arthritis of the Knee.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the results of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in patients with posttraumatic degenerative arthritis due to a previous fracture around the knee.METHODS:We analyzed the results of 15 TKAs, performed from 1997 to 2003, in 15 patients with post-traumatic degenerative arthritis due to a previous fracture around knee. There were 3 women and 12 men with an average age of 58 years (range, 31-76 years). The time from fracture to arthroplasty averaged 8.2 years (range, 2-27 years). Internal fixation had previously been performed in 8 patients resulting in retained hardware. At the time of arthroplasty a femoral fracture malunion was present in two knees. Lateral retinacular release (4 knees), extensor mechanism realignment (1 knee) or medial collateral ligament reconstruction (1 knee) were needed at the time of arthroplasty.RESULTS:Follow-up averaged 35 months (range, 12-73 months). No patient was lost for follow-up. According to the Knee Society Score scale, the mean preoperative knee score was 37 (range, 10-70) and functional score was 41 (range, 0-60). They were improved significantly to a mean of 84 (range, 10-100) and 76 (range, 20-100) points, respectively at the latest follow-up. The mean knee arc of motion were improved from 84 degree preoperation to 94 degree at the latest follow-up. Postoperative manipulation under anesthesia for poor motion was carried out in 4 knees. No knee had aseptic loosening that required subsequent revision. Two knees developed superficial infection and were treated with debridement. It subsequently recovered with the retention of components.CONCLUSIONS:Significant improvement in function and relief of pain has been achieved in patients with previous fractures undergoing subsequent TKA. However, this procedure is technically demanding and patients are at increased risk for restricted motion and need more care following TKA. This study suggests that the outcome of TKA may be improved further by making special efforts to restore limb alignment, to ensure correct component positioning, and to manage soft tissue balance.
Total Knee Arthroplasty in Patients with Prior Femoral and Tibial Fractures: Outcomes and Risk Factors for Surgical Site Complications and Reoperations

Abstract:Objective To investigate the outcomes of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in patients with a prior femoral or tibial fracture, and identify the risk factors for surgical site complications and reoperations. Methods Seventy‐one TKAs performed in 71 patients with a prior tibial or femoral fracture between January 2005 and December 2016 were reviewed retrospectively. Forty males (40 knees) and 31 females (31 knees) were included. The mean age at the time of TKA was 59.2 (range, 29–83) years. Outcomes were assessed using the Knee Society score before surgery and at the final follow‐up visit. The patients' satisfaction rates were evaluated. Complications and reoperations were recorded by clinical and radiographic assessment. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the risk factors for surgical site complications and reoperations. Results The median follow‐up period was 4.7 (range, 3.2–7.1) years. The median knee range of motion increased from 90° preoperatively to 110° at the latest follow‐up. The Knee Society knee score and function score improved from 35 (30, 40) and 40 (30, 50) to 90 (82, 93) and 90 (65, 100), respectively. The degree of overall satisfaction after TKA surgery was very satisfied in 41 patients, satisfied in 20 patients, neutral in four patients, dissatisfied in four patients, and very dissatisfied in two patients. The overall satisfaction (very satisfied and satisfied) rate was 85.9% (61 knees). Twelve knees (16.9%) had 19 surgical site complications. Six knees (8.3%) underwent reoperations, including one revision due to periprosthetic joint infection, one debridement and implant retention for superficial infection, two debridements for delayed wound healing, one open reduction and internal fixation for supracondylar fracture, and one re‐fixation and bone grafting for hardware failure after a combined femoral shaft osteotomy and TKA. Preoperative patella baja was diagnosed in 12 knees, and was identified as a risk factor for surgical site complications and reoperations. Conclusions TKA for post‐fracture osteoarthritis significantly relieved pain and improved function, but the incidence of surgical site complications and reoperations was high. Preoperative patella baja was a risk factor for surgical site complications and reoperations.

Abstract:Intraoperative proximal femoral fracture, one of the most common complications of total hip arthroplasty (THA), occurs more often in cementless procedures and can affect rehabilitation, hospitalization time, and cost of treatment. The goal of this study was to identify risk factors for intraoperative proximal femoral fracture in THA to identify high-risk groups preoperatively and minimize the incidence of this complication. This nested case-control study included 904 primary cementless THA procedures (769 patients) performed between January 2009 and July 2015. Of this group, 24 fractures occurred, accounting for 2.65% of cases. Predisposing factors for intraoperative proximal femoral fracture from the medical records included patient sex, diagnosis of osteoarthritis, operated on hip (left or right), type of implant, alcohol consumption, operative approach, age, and body mass index. The Noble classification, Dorr classification, and Metaphyseal-Diaphyseal Index score measured by picture archiving and communication systems were used to evaluate the anatomy and morphologic features of the proximal femur. A multivariate analysis was performed to evaluate potential risk factors for fracture during THA, including anterolateral (modified Hardinge) approach, use of the Corail (DePuy, Warsaw, Indiana) stem, Metaphyseal-Diaphyseal Index score, age, and sex. A Corail stem, the anterolateral approach, advanced age, and a low Metaphyseal-Diaphyseal Index score were associated with increased risk of fracture. All fractures were treated with cerclage wire techniques, and none has required revision to date. [Orthopedics. 2017; 40(2):e281-e287.].
Inferior outcome after intraoperative femoral fracture in total hip arthroplasty

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Intraoperative femoral fracture is a well known complication of primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). Experimental studies have indicated that intraoperative fractures may affect implant survival. Very few clinical data are available, however.METHODS: We used data from the Danish Hip Arthroplasty Registry to identify patients in Denmark who underwent a primary THA due to primary osteoarthritis between 1995 and 2005 (n = 39,478). Data were linked to two national Danish databases in order to conduct time-dependent implant survival analyses. Implant survival and relative risk estimates were calculated for patients treated nonoperatively and for patients treated with osteosynthesis after sustaining intraoperative femoral fractures during THA surgery. THAs performed without sustaining intraoperative femoral fracture served as the reference group.RESULTS: 282 patients (0.7%) were treated non operatively due to intraoperative femoral fracture and 237 patients (0.6%) were treated with osteosynthesis. In the 0-6 month postoperative period, the adjusted relative risk (RR) of revision was 1.5 (95% CI: 1.1-1.7) for patients treated nonoperatively and 5.7 (3.3-10) for patients treated with osteosynthesis. In the period from 6 months to 11 years postoperatively, we did not find any statistically significant differences in the RR of revision between the groups.INTERPRETATION: Intraoperative fractures increase the relative risk of revision during the first 6 postoperative months. Thus, patients should be informed about the risk of revision after sustaining an intraoperative femoral fracture. Furthermore, initiatives aimed at reducing the risk of revision in the first 6 months following THA should be considered in patients with intraoperative fractures, including immediate change to a larger stem with distal fixation and restricted weight bearing.

Risk and Epidemiology of Periprosthetic Knee Fractures After Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Nationwide Cohort Study

Abstract:Background: Periprosthetic knee fractures (PPKFs) following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are uncommon, but potentially serious injuries. We analyze the risk and risk factors for a PPKF in standard primary TKA patients who have osteoarthritis and a minimally (cruciate-retaining TKAs without a femoral box cut) or posterior-stabilized TKA. In addition, we report the risk for patients who have other underlying knee disorders and/or a higher level of TKA constraint. Methods: All primary TKAs were identified from the Danish National Patient Register and the Danish Knee Arthroplasty Register using data between 1997 and 2022. Subsequent fractures were identified through the International Classification of Diseases diagnosis code, Nordic Medico-Statistical Committee procedure code, or indication for revision TKA. Results: We included 120,642 standard primary TKA patients who had 1,659 PPKFs. The cumulated proportions were 0.4% (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.3 to 0.4) at 2 years 0.8% (0.7 to 0.8) at 5 years. At 10 years, the cumulated proportion was 1.7% (1.6 to 1.8), with 1.3% in the femur, 0.2% in the patella, and 0.2% in the tibia. Significant risk factors were (hazard ratio [HR] [95% CI]); ipsilateral hip arthroplasty (2.3 [2.0 to 2.6]); women (2.1 [1.8 to 2.4]), osteoporosis (1.4 [1.2 to 1.7]); age 80+ (1.4 [1.3 to 1.6]), uncemented TKA (1.3 (1.1 to 1.5) and Charlson Comorbidity Index score 3+ (1.4 [1.1 to 1.8]). An additional 22,624 primary TKA patients who had other underlying knee disorders and/or a higher level of implant constraint were included with 633 PPKFs. The 10-year cumulated proportions were 8.3% (95% CI 6.9 to 9.8) when the underlying disorder was a previous fracture, 2.8% (2.2 to 3.5) for rheumatic disorders, and 5.2% (2.6 to 10.6) for osteonecrosis. In patients who had condylar constrained knees, it was 6.9% (5.1 to 9.4), and 12.4% (8.0 to 16.04) for hinges. Conclusions: In standard primary TKA patients, the 10-year cumulated proportion of PPKFs was 1.7%, and ipsilateral hip arthroplasty, women, osteoporosis, advanced age, uncemented TKA and higher Charlson Comorbidity Index increased the risk. Higher risks were observed in non-osteoarthritis patients and/or patients who had a higher level of TKA constraint.

Abstract:Periprosthetic fractures around total knee arthroplasty in elderly represent an emerging cause of implant revision and their incidence seems destined to further increase in the upcoming years, considering the ever-increasing number of implanted prostheses. These are complex injuries with very high complication rates. It has been estimated that the incidence of femoral periprosthetic fractures after T.K.A. ranged between 0,3 to 2,5%, but increases up to 38% when considering revision T.K.A. Patient-related risk factors for T.K.A. periprosthetic fracture (T.K.A.P.F.) include osteoporosis, age, female sex, revision arthroplasty and peri-implant osteolysis. The grate debate concerns the choice of the most appropriate fixation device for T.K.A.P.F.: closed or open reduction with internal fixation with either locked plate or intramedullary nail is the most commonly used for treating these fractures. Success of these methods depends on the fracture pattern, the stability of implants, and the patient's bone quality which is often poor in elderly, thus resulting in high complication rates. Conversely, a revision of T.K.A. (R.T.K.A.) should be considered in case of prosthetic component instability, severe comminution or metaphyseal extension of the fracture (that precludes a good fixation), previous treatments failure and severe malalignment of T.K.A. Instead megaprosthesis and allograft-prosthesis composite are necessary in case of sever bone loss. Considering the variability of the clinical scenario of T.K.A.P.F., this complex injury requires and experienced and comprehensive approach based on both facture fixation and/or revision arthroplasty.

Abstract:Rationale: Periprosthetic fractures (PPF) are rare complications of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The most common PPF after TKA is supracondylar femoral fracture, which is a relatively rare complication that is usually associated with high-energy trauma, with a reported incidence ranging from 0.4 to 1.7% according to the AOANJRR. However, in TKA patients, it is rarer that the stress fracture around the tibial prosthesis occurs due to changes in the lower limb force line, increasing weight-bearing, and changes in walking gait. Patient concerns: A 68-year-old woman visited our hospital with "both knees had aggravated pain and deformity for 8 years." TKA was performed first on the left knee and the patient was discharged within 1 week. Three months later, the patient complained of pain in the upper middle 1/3 part of the medial tibia for 2 weeks, which gradually worsened and affected weight-bearing. Diagnoses: Physical examination showed that the left knee joint presented varus deformity, and the right valgus deformity, which diagnosed as osteoarthritis of both knees and was so-called "blownknee". The disease was initially diagnosed as osteoarthritis of both knees on first admission and PPF of the tibia in second. Interventions: Three operations were performed on this patient. The first was TKA of the left knee, the second was open reduction and internal fixation of the PPF of the tibia 3 months after the first operation, and the third was TKA of the right knee. Outcomes: Until now, the patient has had no recurrent PPF, and the fracture is healing from the last X-ray. Lessons: Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of PPF after TKA, especially in such patients, the most preferred surgical treatment method was open reduction and internal fixation of fractures using locking plates, and if the PPF with loosened implants, Revision TKA, or megaprosthesis was the better choice.
Reoperations After Operatively and Non-Operatively Treated Periprosthetic Knee Fractures: A Nationwide Study on 1,931 Fractures After Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty

Abstract:Background Periprosthetic knee fracture (PPKF) following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) can be difficult to treat. A PPKF can be treated both operatively and non-operatively, and the treatment varies between fracture sites. This study aimed to assess the risk of reoperation according to the fracture site and treatment of the PPKF. Method This study is a nationwide cohort study using register data from 1997 to 2022. Cruciate-retaining or posterior-stabilized primary TKA were identified from the Danish Knee Arthroplasty Register (DKR). Subsequent PPKFs, fracture treatments, and later reoperations were identified through the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) diagnosis and procedure codes in the Danish National Patient Register. Additionally, indications for revision TKA (rTKA) in the DKR were used to identify PPKFs and the reason for reoperation. Results We included 1,931 PPKFs (1,494 femoral, 207 patellae, and 230 tibial) with an overall two-year reoperation risk of 20% (95% CI [confidence interval]: 18 to 23). Femoral PPKFs had a two-year reoperation risk of 16% (12 to 22) after non-operative treatment and 21% (18 to 24) after operative treatment. Patellar PPKFs had a two-year reoperation risk in five to 17 after non-operative treatment and 46% (30 to 69) after operative treatment. Tibial PPKFs had a two-year reoperation risk of 17% (11 to 27) after non-operative treatment, and 36% (25 to 53) after operative treatment. Conclusion The overall two-year reoperation risk was 20% (18 to 23). Operative-treated PPKFs had a higher risk of reoperation across all fracture locations. The highest reoperation risk was found after operatively treated patella and tibial PPKFs (46 and 36%, respectively), and the lowest reoperation risk was found after non-operative treated patella PPKFs.

Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) in Tibial Plateau Fractures

Abstract:Fifty percent of tibial plateau fractures occur in adult older than 50 years old, with 8–24 % of those occurring in elderly patients. The gold standard treatment for these fractures in young patients is open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). However, because of poor bone quality, soft tissue impairment, and complications related to immobilization, ORIF in the elderly are associated to a high complication rate. For this reason, some authors proposed early total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to treat tibial plateau fractures in elderly patients affected by prior osteoarthritis. Surgeons approaching this surgery should be aware that the outcomes are inferior compared to elective TKA. Furthermore, the complication rate following TKA in tibial plateau fractures are more similar to revision TKA than primary TKA. For these reasons, early arthroplasty in proximal tibial fractures should be reserved to elderly patients affected by prior osteoarthritis, who do not comply with the restricted weight-bearing postoperative protocol in order to avoid further surgery. There are few reports on literature reporting on the outcomes of early TKA in tibial plateau fractures, with small records and short follow-up. However, the authors agree in defining this procedure as a valid option in these patients.This chapter reviewed indications, surgical techniques, and outcomes of TKA to treat acute tibial plateau fracture.

Abstract:Tibial plateau fractures (TFP) are serious injuries of the knee and difficult to treat.In the past decades, many kinds of fixation methods have been proposed in the literature. From non-operative management to current staged and combined management with provisional external fixators, before conventional angular stable platingshave been suggested for complex TPF. The conventional techniques have been widely accepted, but many patients developed complications and unsatisfactory outcomes. Restricted internal approaches likeMinimally invasive plate osteosynthesis(MIPO), Less Invasive Stabilization System (LISS) and further less invasive techniqueslike fine-wire apparatuses, arthroscopically assisted fixation, tibialtuberoplasty and tibial nailing for selected cases have been developed.Most authors agree that functional outcomes of complex TPF depend mainly on the quality of anatomical and stable reduction of the intraarticular and posterior fragments while the type of fracture may be deemed as an independent predictor. Minimally invasive techniques have been proven to provide fewer complications, better functional outcomes, and early weight-bearing than the conventional open surgical techniques.
Comminuted intraarticular fractures of the tibial plateau lead to posttraumatic osteoarthritis of the knee: Current treatment review

Abstract:Posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) of the knee is a common complication after intra- and extra-articular fractures. Moreover, PTOA may also be a result of isolated cartilage defects, meniscus resections, and ligament injuries. There are various methods of treatment of knee joint fractures. However, in the final stage of a PTOA, when nonoperative treatment fails, endoprosthetic joint replacement is the method of choice. Primary total knee replacement (TKR) for the treatment for a fracture of the knee joint is a rare indication, even at major treatment centers. It is performed in elderly patients with the inability to be mobilized with partial- or non-weight bearing; in cases with considerable bone destruction; in cases with symptomatic osteoarthritis (OA) in the elderly; and, it is often associated with the primary use of a modular implant. However, TKR in the acute situation should always be an individual decision. Secondary TKR after knee joint fracture shows overall good functional results. However, the results are inferior when compared with TKR for primary OA. In addition, the complication rates of TKR for PTOA are much higher. Problems with the extensor mechanism after tibial plateau fractures are common. There are also problems caused by preexisting scars, nonunion (possibly due to a low grade infection), malalignment, restricted movement, or instability.

Abstract:Intraoperative femoral fracture is a rare but growing complication of primary total hip arthroplasty. We aimed to present an uncommon related case, assessing also the role of malnutrition and osteoporosis. We discuss the case of a 49 years old male patient, malnourished and osteoporotic, with an intertrochanteric, multifragmentary, inveterate fracture, that happened three months before. During the prosthetic surgery, a supracondylar fracture occurred. We synthesized it with a 13 holes LISS plate, 7 distal screws and 3 proximal cerclage wires. The leg was immobilized to 0° for 3 weeks and the load forbidden for 3 months. Calcium, Albumine, Total Proteins, Osteocalcin and Vitamin-D levels were below the normal range. Teriparatide was administered for 6 months. Global investigation of the patient's nutritional status is recommended before joint replacement and preoperative planning is mandatory to choose the adequate implant. Osteoanabolic therapy could be advisable to favor fracture healing.

Abstract:Introduction and aim: Tibial plateau fractures are one of the most complex and common intra-articular fractures encountered in trauma surgery. This study aims to evaluate the MRI intra-articular findings of patients with tibial plateau fractures treated surgically and the functional and radiological changes after surgical treatment. Materials and methods: A total of 91 patients admitted to our clinic between 2010 and 2019 and operated for tibial plateau fracture were identified from the hospital information system. Patients were excluded from the study if aged <18 years, if the radiographs and MRIs were not suitable for the measurements, or if they could not be contacted by telephone. The study was completed with 49 operated knees and 49 healthy knees of 49 patients. The patients were evaluated with respect to demographic characteristics, Knee Society Knee Score (KSKS), Knee Society Function Score (KSFS), Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) functional and clinical scores, Rasmussen, Kellgren-Lawrence, and Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score (WORMS) radiological scoring, and meniscus and ligament pathologies examined on the follow-up MR images. Results: The patients comprised 39 males and 10 females with a mean age of 45.9±11.89 years, and a mean follow-up of 58.2±30.7 months. The fractures were seen to be 49% (n=24)in the lateral plateau, 6.1% (n=4) in the medial plateau, and 42.9% (n=21) were bicondylar fractures involving both plateaux. The KSKS knee score was satisfactory in 85.7% of the patients, the KSFS functional score in 89.7%, and the Rassmussen radiological score in 93.8%. In the KOOS subjective questionnaire, the mean points obtained were 430.7, and the mean total WORMS points were 34.2. According to the Kellgren-Lawrence grades, severe osteoarthritis (grade 3-4) developed in 18.3% (n=9) of the patients. Conclusion: Meniscus injuries that are overlooked at the time of the first injury or which may develop in the subsequent process were not found to seriously affect the functional outcomes of tibial plateau fractures. It can be considered that even if a ligament injury is seen to be accompanying the fracture at the time of the first trauma, the effect is not great in terms of prognosis, and the treatment can remain conservative, especially for collateral ligament injuries.
The treatment of intraoperative calcar fracture in primary cementless total hip arthroplasty

Abstract:Background: Intraoperative periprosthetic femoral fracture(PFF) is a severe complication of primary cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA). An assessment of risk factors would effectively reduce the risk. Objective: The present study aimed to identify the risk factors for intraoperative calcar fracture and evaluate its clinical effects. Methods: In this retrospec-tive analysis, 712 patients (825 hips) who had undergone primary cementless THA from January 2015 to December 2017 were included. And a case-control (1:2) study was designed to identify the potential risk factors. 19 patients (20 hips) intra-operative calcar fractures were observed. A control group of 38 patients (40 hips) without calcar fractures was randomly se-lected. Demographic data, type of implant, proximal femur morphology, preoperative diagnosis and complications were evaluated to determine risk factors for intraoperative calcar fracture. Results: The overall incidence of PFF was 2.42%(20/825). The mean follow-up time was 6.9±3.8 months. No prosthesis loosening and subsidence occurred. There was no statisti-cally significant difference in the age and gender between two groups as well as BMI (P>0.05). The proportions of osteoporo-sis in the PFF group were significantly higher than that in the control group (P=0.001). There was no statistically significant difference in the type of implants between two groups(P=0.138). Developmental dysplasia of the hip(DDH), femoral neck fracture, stovepipe-type proximal femurs and dissection anomaly were risk factors for intraoperative fracture. Conclusions: In the short period, the treatment of detectable calcar fracture was effective(Vancouver A2 type). Preoperative radiographic eval-uations, careful operation and screening for high-risk patients, may be the potential strategies to reduce the incidence of PFF.
Successful Total Knee Arthroplasty for Hoffa and Proximal Tibial Fractures: Report of Three Complex Cases After Failed Osteosynthesis Procedures

Abstract:BACKGROUND Distal femoral and proximal tibial fractures often lead to nonunion and post-traumatic osteoarthritis, and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has emerged as an effective alternative for older patients. This report includes 3 cases of successful TKA treatment. The cases involve a 42-year-old man and a 62-year-old man with Hoffa coronal fractures of the distal femur, and a 50-year-old man with a proximal tibial fracture. These patients underwent multiple osteosynthesis procedures before receiving TKA. CASE REPORT Case 1: A 42-year-old man with a displaced Hoffa's fracture had persistent knee pain. Nonunion post-initial fixation led to reoperation with iliac bone grafting and plate fixation. TKA using a Posterior Stabilized (PS)-type implant resulted in improved motion and function after 3 years. Case 2: A 62-year-old man suffered lateral condyle and ligament injuries from a displaced Hoffa's fracture. Despite plate fixation, dislocation occurred, requiring conversion. TKA with long-stem hinge-type implant, using augmentation block, led to enhanced stability and outcomes at 2 years. Case 3: A 50-year-old man's tibial nonunion, treated with plate fixation, resulted in infection and bone fusion. TKA using a constrained PS-type implant insert addressed the lateral tibial adhesions via iliotibial band (ITB) release and treated severe tibial plateau damage. Positive results were seen at 1 year. CONCLUSIONS The challenges of pseudarthrosis, like bone defects and compromised tissue, highlight the need for precise implant selection based on evaluations of bone quality, defects, knee stability, and hyperextension, rather than resorting to overly-constrained implants.

Abstract:Between 1982 and 1986, 56 femoral fractures associated with cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) were evaluated and compared to a randomly selected cementless THA control group without fractures. Depending upon the femoral shaft location, these fractures were classified as Types I, II or III. There were 45 (80%) Type I, 9 (16%) Type II, and 2 (4%) Type III fractures. Patient evaluations were quantified using a modified d'Aubigne-Harris scoring system. Nonparametric statistical methodology was used for fracture and control group comparisons. Treatment protocols were divided into various modalities, depending upon fracture classification. Type I and Type II fractures have no long-term prognostic hazards associated with them (P greater than 0.1), while Type III fractures appear to have analogous clinical results (sample size was too small for statistical analysis).
