Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite have been intensively studied in the past decades due to their outstanding performance in solar cells and other optoelectronic devices. Recently, the emergence of two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D) heterojunctions have enabled many solar cell devices with >25% power conversion efficiency, which was driven by the advances in our understanding of the structural and photophysical properties of the heterojunctions and our ability in controlling these properties through organic cation configuration in 2D perovskites. In this feature article, we discuss the fundamental understanding of structure characteristics and the carrier dynamics in 2D/3D heterojunctions and their impacting factors. We further elaborate the design strategies of molecular configuration of the organic cations to achieve thorough management of these properties. Finally, the recent advances of 2D/3D heterostructures in solar cells, light emitting devices and photodetectors are highlighted, which translate the fundamental understandings to the device applications, and also reveal the remaining challenges in ligand design for next generation of stable devices. Future development prospects and related challenges are also provided with wide perspective and insightful thoughts.

Abstract:Formation of a two-dimensional (2D) perovskite layer on the top of three-dimensional (3D) perovskite has been demonstrated to be effective in reducing interfacial charge recombination and improving the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, it is difficult to fabricate 2D/3D perovskite heterojunction with accurate composition and structure through only solution process, and the location of 2D perovskite is also difficult to regulated owing to the uncontrolled cation exchange between organic constituents, which results in mismatched energy level arrangements. Herein, a 2D perovskite with a spacer cation of 1, 4-dimethylphenylene ammonium is grown on 3D perovskite film by the solid-state heat-pressure method. The relevant growth process, light absorption ability, energy level regulation and stability property of the samples are systematically investigated. A broad range of experimental characterizations exhibit that the introduction of 2D perovskite improve the energy level alignment with adjacent carbon electrode and enhance the hydrophobic property of the perovskite sample. As a result, a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.63% is achieved for the carbon-based hole-transport-layer-free PSCs based on 2D/3D heterojunction, which is higher than that of 11.88% for the control 3D device. Simultaneously, the improved device retains 90% of initial performance after aging for 1000 h in ambient conditions. The present work opens a new avenue for designing 2D/3D perovskite heterojunction and improve the performance and stability of PSCs.

Abstract:The noteworthy stability of Dion–Jacobson (DJ) phase two-dimensional perovskites marks them as potential contenders for use in optoelectronic applications. Nonetheless, their proliferation is considerably stymied by the constrained charge transport properties inherent to them. This bottleneck is adeptly navigated by deploying 2D-DJ perovskite top layers, seamlessly integrated on 3D perovskite films. We unveil a novel organic cation salt, 4-(Aminomethyl)piperidine (4AMP), as a potent facilitator for treating perovskite photovoltaic films. By employing the annealing technique, we facilitated the in situ creation of a hybrid 2D/3D architecture. Contrasted with conventional 3D architectures, the delineated perovskite heterojunctions with a 2D/3D structure exhibit superior enhanced charge separation, and mitigate photovoltaic losses by proficiently passivating intrinsic defects. The size-graded perovskite 2D/3D structure engineered herein significantly elevates the charge transfer performance, concurrently attenuating the excess lead iodide induced by bulk defects. This precise method resulted in a significant increase in Power Conversion Efficiency, reaching 23.08%, along with an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.17 V. Remarkably, the unpackaged modified device robustly retains 92% of its initial PCE post a 3000 h sojourn under ambient conditions. This discourse propounds a novel paradigm for constructing stable planar PSC 2D/3D heterojunctions, thereby enriching the blueprint for advanced perovskite-based photovoltaic systems.

Abstract:The hole transport layer (HTL)-free carbon electrode-based perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) possess promising commercial application potential due to their fascinating advantages of low cost and high stability. However, the large energy level mismatch between perovskite and carbon electrodes seriously restricts the photovoltaic performance. 3D/2D perovskite heterostructures have been widely adopted to regulate energy level alignment, whereas achieving a large built-in electric field ( V bi ) is still a great challenge. Herein, we propose molecular dipole moment engineering to regulate the interface energy levels and V bi of 3D/2D perovskite heterojunctions. Experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that an organic cation with ultra-large dipole moment significantly improves the work function of 2D perovskites, resulting in the formation of p-type 2D perovskites. Besides, an ultra-thick (>200 nm) 2D perovskite layer is constructed on the surface of the 3D perovskite film. This results in the construction of 3D/2D p–n junctions, significantly enhancing the V bi . As a result, the formed powerful 3D/2D heterojunction not only effectively passivates the defect states, but also markedly promotes the extraction of photogenerated holes. The devices achieve a new record efficiency of 20.08% (certified 19.6%) for HTL-free C-PSCs. The unencapsulated devices maintain 96% of the initial value after operating for 1000 h at maximum power point.

Abstract:Electronic band structure engineering of metal-halide perovskites (MHP) lies at the core of fundamental materials research and photovoltaic applications. However, reconfiguring the band structures in MHP for optimized electronic properties remains challenging. This article reports a generic strategy for constructing near-edge states to improve carrier properties, leading to enhanced device performances. The near-edge states are designed around the valence band edge using theoretical prediction and constructed through tailored material engineering. These states are experimentally revealed with activation energies of around 23 milli-electron volts by temperature-dependent time-resolved spectroscopy. Such small activation energies enable prolonged carrier lifetime with efficient carrier transition dynamics and low non-radiative recombination losses, as corroborated by the millisecond lifetimes of microwave conductivity. By constructing near-edge states in positive-intrinsic-negative inverted cells, a champion efficiency of 25.4% (25.0% certified) for a 0.07-cm2 cell and 23.6% (22.7% certified) for a 1-cm2 cell is achieved. The most stable encapsulated cell retains 90% of its initial efficiency after 1100 h of maximum power point tracking under one sun illumination (100 mW cm-2) at 65 degrees C in ambient air. Efficient doping of hybrid perovskites holds the potential to further advance solar cell efficiency. This study presents a generic strategy for perovskite doping by constructing ultra-shallow near-edge states. These states can effectively prolong electron-hole recombination through efficient trap and de-trap processes, resulting in over 25% efficiency in inverted perovskite solar cells with superior long-term operational stability.image

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have delivered a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of more than 25% and incorporating polymers as hole-transporting layers (HTLs) can further enhance the stability of devices toward the goal of commercialization. Among the various polymeric hole-transporting materials, poly(triaryl amine) (PTAA) is one of the promising HTL candidates with good stability; however, the hydrophobicity of PTAA causes problematic interfacial contact with the perovskite, limiting the device performance. Using molecular side-chain engineering, a uniform 2D perovskite interlayer with conjugated ligands, between 3D perovskites and PTAA is successfully constructed. Further, employing conjugated ligands as cohesive elements, perovskite/PTAA interfacial adhesion is significantly improved. As a result, the thin and lateral extended 2D/3D heterostructure enables as-fabricated PTAA-based PSCs to achieve a PCE of 23.7%, improved from the 18% of reference devices. Owing to the increased ion-migration energy barrier and conformal 2D coating, unencapsulated devices with the new ligands exhibit both superior thermal stability under 60 °C heating and moisture stability in ambient conditions.

Abstract:The 2D/3D heterojunction structure emerges as a viable approach for enhancing the efficiency and stability of perovskite photovoltaics. However, the formation of an accumulative low-dimensional 2D perovskite (n=1) cladding layer often impedes carrier transport due to the insulating nature and high quantum confinement, and there is a paucity of detailed understanding regarding its surface phase control. This study introduces a Dion-Jacobson (DJ) phase 2D perovskite, employing decane-1,10-diammonium diiodide (DDADI) to interface with 3D perovskite, leveraging long-chain diammonium cations for structural stability and defect passivation on the 3D FAPbI3 perovskite surface. In addition, a novel PbI2-assisted phase control (PAPC) technique is proposed to mitigate the quantum confinement effects of the 2D layer, especially reducing the formation of the highly confined insulating n=1 phase. X-ray scattering analysis confirms the method's efficacy in promoting the formation of an n=2 phase, facilitating cascading HOMO levels and improving hole carrier transport. The optimized 2D/3D perovskite solar cell (PSC) achieve an exemplary efficiency of 25.16%, with a notable open-circuit voltage of 1.192V, and retain 92.9% of its initial efficiency after 1000hours in a nitrogen atmosphere, signifying a strategic advancement in 2D/3D PSC construction.

Allosteric ligands offer a number of advantages over orthosteric drugs, including the potential for greater receptor subtype selectivity and a more 'physiological' regulation of receptor activity. However, the manifestations of allosterism at G-protein-coupled receptors are quite varied, and significant challenges remain for the optimization of screening methods to ensure the routine detection and validation of allosteric ligands.

Abstract:2D/3D perovskite heterojunctions exhibit promising prospects in the improvement of efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, many challenges remain in the development of high-quality 2D/3D heterojunctions, such as a reliable pathway to control the perovskite phase and generally poor performance in inverted (p–i–n) devices, which limit their commercialization. Fortunately, many excellent works have proposed lots of strategies to solve these challenges, which have triggered a new wave of research on 2D/3D perovskite heterojunctions in recent years. In this paper, the latest research progress and the critical factors involved in the modulating mechanisms of PSCs with 2D/3D heterojunctions have been summarized and laid out systematically. The advantages of constructing 2D/3D perovskite heterojunctions in PSCs are highlighted, and the problems and related solutions of low-dimensional perovskites as passivation layers towards high-performance PSCs are also discussed in depth. Finally, the prospects of 2D/3D perovskite heterojunctions utilized in the passivation strategies to further improve the photovoltaic performance of PSCs in the future have been presented.

Abstract:The expensive and unstable organic hole transport layer (HTL) is one of the crucial problems that hampers the wide application of perovskite solar cells. Here, an MAPbI3-(BA)2(MA)n−1PbnI3 n+1 3D-2D perovskite-perovskite planar heterojunction (PPPH) through a facile BAI and MAPbI3 interfacial ion exchange process was conducted. A graded band structure was formed for efficient charge separation, and the conductivity of the 2D perovskite can be tuned by extrinsic FA incorporation, which provides effective conducting channels for holes, making the modified 2D perovskite layer a promising and stable HTL. Optimized solar cells based on 3D-2D PPPH showed a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.15% initially and 16.13% after thermal aging, and could maintain 71% output for 50 days under 65% humidity, and 74% for 30 days under 85°C, without encapsulation. This work points to realize low cost and ambient compatible PPPH solar cells with high PCE and robust stability.

Abstract:Abstract Light-induced halide segregation constrains the photovoltaic performance and stability of wide-bandgap perovskite solar cells and tandem cells. The implementation of an intermixed two-dimensional/three-dimensional heterostructure via solution post-treatment is a typical strategy to improve the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells. However, owing to the composition-dependent sensitivity of surface reconstruction, the conventional solution post-treatment is suboptimal for methylammonium-free and cesium/bromide-enriched wide-bandgap PSCs. To address this, we develop a generic three-dimensional to two-dimensional perovskite conversion approach to realize a preferential growth of wider dimensionality (n ≥ 2) atop wide-bandgap perovskite layers (1.78 eV). This technique involves depositing a well-defined MAPbI 3 thin layer through a vapor-assisted two-step process, followed by its conversion into a two-dimensional structure. Such a two-dimensional/three-dimensional heterostructure enables suppressed light-induced halide segregation, reduced non-radiative interfacial recombination, and facilitated charge extraction. The wide-bandgap perovskite solar cells demonstrate a champion power conversion efficiency of 19.6% and an open-circuit voltage of 1.32 V. By integrating with the thermal-stable FAPb 0.5 Sn 0.5 I 3 narrow-bandgap perovskites, our all-perovskite tandem solar cells exhibit a stabilized PCE of 28.1% and retain 90% of the initial performance after 855 hours of continuous 1-sun illumination.

Abstract:Combined with the superb moisture and thermal stability of two-dimensional (2D) perovskites and the excellent photoelectronic features of three-dimensional (3D) perovskites, building 3D/2D structure has been proved to be an auspicious way to improve both power conversion efficiency (PCE) and durability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, cyclohexylammonium bromide (CMABr) as p-dopant is introduced into hole transport layer (HTL) to form 3D/2D heterostructure perovskite bilayer. It is confirmed that the formation of 2D perovskite interlayer comes from the reaction between the excess PbI2 on the surface of 3D perovskite and CMABr on the bottom of HTL, which served as moisture barrier layer to enhance the device stability. The exotic CMA+ and Br− ions could insert the ABX3 perovskite lattice to compensate A-site cation and X-site vacancies, which reduced the undesirable non-radiative recombination centers. Owing to the p-type doping, the more uniform morphology, down-shifted energy levels and improved electrical properties were obtained. Consequently, the CMABr-doped PSCs based on triple-cation (Cs+, MA+ and FA+) perovskite and double-cation (MA+ and FA+) perovskite produce maximum PCEs of 21.78 % and 23.56 %, respectively, as well as remarkable long-term device stability. The results demonstrate a novel pathway to construct 3D/2D stacking structure for highly efficient PSCs with decent stability.

Abstract:In metal halide perovskite solar cells the formation of a 2D/3D bulk heterostructure has a positive effect on device stability but can be detrimental to charge transport and power conversion efficiency (PCE). Herein, we report that amidino-based Dion-Jacobson 2D perovskite enables the creation of an efficient and stable FAPbI3-based 2D/3D heterostructure in perovskite solar cells. The 2D-perovskite-assisted nucleation/growth of 3D perovskites during film formation was found by using time-resolved optical diagnostics, which decrease concentrations of voids and bulk defects of perovskite films for efficient charge transport. The planar perovskite solar cells based on 2D/3D heterostructures achieved efficiencies of 24.9% and 22.3% on rigid and flexible substrates, respectively, which are the highest efficiencies among all 2D/3D composite solar cells. Improved stability was further demonstrated, with 97% of original efficiency retained for rigid solar cells without encapsulation after 1,000 h of storage under ambient conditions (RH 30%–40%) and 92% for flexible solar cells after 3,000 bending cycles.

Abstract:Halide perovskites with low-dimensionalities (2D or quasi-2D) have demonstrated outstanding stabilities compared to their 3D counterparts. Nevertheless, poor charge-transporting abilities of organic components in 2D perovskites lead to relatively low power conversion efficiency (PCE) and thus limit their applications in photovoltaics. Here, we report a novel hole-transporting low-dimensional (HT2D) perovskite, which can form a hole-transporting channel on the top surface of 3D perovskite due to self-assembly effects of metal halide frameworks. This HT2D perovskite can significantly reduce interface trap densities and enhance hole-extracting abilities of a heterojunction region between the 3D perovskite and hole-transporting layer. Furthermore, the posttreatment by HT2D can also reduce the crystal defects of perovskite and improve film morphology. As a result, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) can effectively suppress nonradiative recombination, leading to an increasement on photovoltage to >1.20 V and thus achieving >20% power conversion efficiency and >500 h continuous illumination stability. This work provides a pathway to overcome charge-transporting limitations in low-dimensional perovskites and delivers significant enhancements on performance of PSCs.

Abstract:Generally, the 2D CsPbI3 layer capping on 3D counterparts has been considered as an effective strategy for both enhancing photovoltaic efficiency and stability. However, the intrinsically poor out-of-plane charge transport through the 2D layer remarkably hinders the overall performance of solar devices. To overcome such a challenge, we report the rationally designed 3D-CsPbI3/2D-(PYn)PbI4 (n = 1-4) heterojunctions with desirable energy level matching. It is evidenced that the valence band (VB) edge reconfiguration would occur with the increase of n, accompanied by the VB maximum (VBM) of the 2D component moving down from the higher level above that of the 3D component to the underneath. Consequently, the as-constructed 3D/2D-(PYn)PbI4 (n = 1, 2) heterojunctions exhibit optimal energy level matching, with accelerated transport of holes from 3D to 2D component and limited backflow of electrons. These findings might provide some meaningful insights on the energy level matching in 3D/2D perovskite heterojunctions.
Tailoring the Dimensionality of 2D/3D Heterojunctions for Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Interface engineering is crucial to achieving stable perovskite photovoltaic devices. A versatile approach is developed to tailor interface properties via integrating co-assembled monolayers (co-SAMs) at the p-type buried interface and by capping a two-dimensional (2D) perovskite layer at the n-type upper interface with vacuum quenching. Optimized co-SAMs promote the coverage of the hole transport layer, significantly reducing the incidence of leakage currents. Based on this foundation, we develop damp-heat-stable perovskite solar cells by precisely tailoring the fragments of 2D perovskite layers through vacuum annealing with phenethylammonium iodide. An impressive open-circuit voltage of 1.216 V is achieved, corresponding to 92% of the value determined by the detailed-balance limit, along with a power conversion efficiency of 23.68%. Ultimately, integrating co-SAMs and the vacuum-assisted annealing fabricated devices maintain 96% and 80% of initial efficiencies after 1200 and 500 h of tracking at a maximum power point under 55 and 85 °C, respectively.

Abstract:Fabricating highly efficient and stable inverted wide-bandgap (WBG) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is the key factor for developing high-efficiency and stabilized tandem solar cells. Herein, we propose an interfacial engineering strategy to form a 2D/3D perovskite heterojunction using 2-thiopheneethylammonium chloride (TEACl). The thiophene-based 2D/3D perovskite heterojunction improves the optoelectronic properties of the perovskite absorber, passivates the electron and hole traps, increases the activation energy of the ion movement, and lowers the dark saturation current density of the device. As a result, the device with TEACl treatment delivers a champion power conversion efficiency of 20.31% with a 1.68-eV bandgap. In addition, the devices with TEACl treatment exhibit superior stability than the control devices under various testing conditions. Finally, an efficiency of 24.0% is achieved for a 4-terminal perovskite/CIGS tandem solar cell. Our results demonstrate that the thiophene-based 2D/3D perovskite heterojunction is a promising approach for achieving efficient and stable WBG PSCs.

Tuning Electronic and Optical Properties of 2D/3D Construction based on Hybrid Perovskites through Interfacial Charge Transfer: Towards Higher Efficiency Solar Cells

Abstract:The 2D/3D construction of hybrid perovskite interfaces is gaining increasing attention due to their enhanced stability towards degradation without compromising the corresponding solar cell efficiency. Much of it is due to the interfacial charge transfer and its consequences on the electronic and optical response of the composite system, which are instrumental in the context of stability and efficiency. In this work, we have considered a case study of an experimentally motivated 2D/3D interface constructed based on Ruddlesden-Popper phases of (A43)$_2$PbI$_4$ and (A43)$_2$MAPb$_2$I$_7$ hybrid perovskites to envisage the unique tuning of electronic and optical properties through the associated charge transfer. The corresponding tuning of the band gap is seen to be related to a unique charge transfer process between the 2D and 3D counterparts of the interface mediated from valence to conduction band edges of the composite. We have found that the optical absorption spectra can also be tuned by the construction of such a hetero-interface and the emergence of a unique two-peak step feature on the absorption edge, which is not present in either the 2D or 3D hybrid perovskites. Formation of the composite is found to increase the spectroscopic limited maximum efficiency for the use of these materials as solar cells from $\approx$ 24\% for individual components to $\approx$ 32\% for the composite hetero-structure.

Abstract:The 2D/3D composite structure possesses both the excellent stability of 2D perovskite and the excellent performance of 3D perovskite, which recently have attracted special attention. Different from the popular isopropanol, a novel additive solvent-polypropylene glycol bis (2-aminopropyl ether) (A-PPG) is introduced here to dissolve excess PbI<sub>2</sub> and perovskite, and then reconstruct and in situ form the quasi-2D perovskite layer on 3D perovskite bulk. The lone electron pairs of the ether-oxygen and amino in A-PPG can form coordination bonds with Pb<sup>2+</sup> . The introduction of A-PPG tunes the energy array of functional layers, passivates defects, and mitigates carrier nonradiative recombination. Consequently, the 2D/3D perovskite device exhibits a championship efficiency of 22.24% with a distinguished open-circuit voltage of 1.21 V (the thermodynamic limit of 1.30 V). Moreover, the 2D/3D device still maintains 90% of the original efficiency in the ambient atmosphere with a relative humidity of 30 ± 10% after 50 days.
