Abstract:A low-cost valveless micropump based on piezoelectric actuation is presented.The optimized value of opening angle is obtained by numerical simulation,which is the reference of design parameters of the diffuser/nozzle element.A 300 μm depth of pump chamber substrate and a 100 μm depth of cover are fabricated on pyrex glass using photographic and wet chemical etching processes.Then,by using plasma cleaning technology,they are bonded to PDMS membrane to accomplish the fabrication of the micropump.The maximum flow rate and backpressure of the pump are about 436 μL/min and 620 Pa when applying a 100V square wave driving voltage at 110 Hz across the piezoelectric-disc.

Abstract:A dynamic micropumping phenomenon has been observed, which is based on acoustic streaming generated by a piezotransducer actuated in d 31 mode without check valve. The use of d 31 mode of a piezoelectric microtransducer can significantly enhance the pumping performance for application in miniaturization. Experimental study of the maximum local velocity has been conducted to investigate the effect of actuator tip configuration on the micropumping performance. In addition, this study also shows the quantitative measurement of the pumping performance such as the pressure head generated as a function of different relevant parameters like applied electrical field, AC frequency, and length of the actuator.

Abstract:This work reports a valveless piezoelectric micropump with high pressure load and high flowrate. The experimental results showed that the maximum displacement of the actuator and the output flowrate of the micropump could reach 18.4 μm and 308 mL/min under zero pressure load, respectively, which was highly consistent with the numerical analysis. The maximum output pressure reached 47 kPa, and the pump was extremely stable under various temperatures from room temperature to 80°C, with frequency variations of only −150 Hz. The micropump demonstrated its great potential for wearable/portable application, especially for blood pressure monitoring.

Abstract:A dynamic micropumping device has been developed, which is based on acoustic streaming generated by a piezoelectric microtransducer actuated in d(31) mode without any check valve. Piezoelectric microtransducers immersed in liquid (water) are used as actuators due to some of their unique properties such as lower noise generation and ease of miniaturization. Abstract:In this paper, a piezoelectric micro-pump with integrated valve based on synthetic jet structure is proposed. The piezoelectric micro-pump possesses a size of about 16mm*16mm*3mm, which works at the first-order resonant frequency of 11649Hz. With the rectangular wave driving signal has the amplitude of 24V, the average output flow of the piezoelectric micro-pump is about 139.5 mL /min. The maximum output pressure can reach more than 30 kPa. Compared with the existing piezoelectric pump, it has the advantages of high-pressure retention and small size, indicating a potential application in wearable device such as smart pressure watch.

Abstract:Piezoelectric pumps play a crucial role in microfluidics owing to their compact size, minimal noise, and absence of electromagnetic interference, rendering them exceptionally versatile. As technology advances, the field of microfluidics requires higher standards for miniaturization, flow rate, and pressure of piezoelectric pumps. This paper introduces two novel miniature valve-based piezoelectric liquid pump with distinct structures: the Mono-port valved piezoelectric micropump (MPVPM) and the Bi-port valved piezoelectric micropump (BPVPM). The primary distinguishing factor between the two is the number of cantilever beam valves at the outlet, with the former featuring one set and the latter featuring two sets. Firstly, simulation software is employed to analyze the inlet/outlet valves, the surrounding flow field, microchannels, and the overall operation process. Secondly, the key structural parameters of the piezoelectric pump are optimized through experiments. Finally, prototypes of both piezoelectric pumps are fabricated, and their output performance indicators are tested and compared. According to simulation and experimental results, the BPVPM demonstrates a faster discharge rate of fluid from the chamber compared to the MPVPM. The arc-shaped channel in the BPVPM exhibits superior energy transfer efficiency. It has been observed that both the flow rate and pressure of the piezoelectric pump initially increase with driving frequency, followed by a decrease, while they increase linearly with voltage. Under optimal operating conditions, the MPVPM achieves a flow rate of 4.4 mL/min and a pressure of 21 kPa, whereas the BPVPM achieves 5.1 mL/min and 25.7 kPa. This suggests that BPVPM has a superior output performance compared to MPVPM. Additionally, both proposed piezoelectric pumps have the same dimensions of 7 mm x 7 mm x 1.5 mm, making them compact and efficient. This piezoelectric pump exhibits good comprehensive output performance in a small size and holds potential practical value in fields such as biomedical, cooling systems, fuel supply, and chemical engineering.

Abstract:In order to realize the miniaturization and integration of the microfluidic chips, a miniature valveless piezoelectric micropump was studied which could transport the micro flow of liquid quantificationally and continuously. The structure of the micropump was fabricated with parallel double chambers, a diffuser and a nozzle unit based on MEMS technology as the entrance and exit, and a piezoelectric bimorph was used as the actuator which utilizes poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as diaphragm. The flow rates of the micropump were measured, and the results showed that the flow rates were influenced by the thickness of the membrane, frequency and voltage, when a sine wave of 80 V and 1 100 Hz was applied, the maximum flow rate of the valveless piezoelectric micropump in parallel with double chambers reached to 210 μL/min, which was 1.5 times as the micropump with the same single-chamber structure.

Engineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics

Abstract:Microfluidic devices or systems to generate recirculating flow are increasingly utilized in the fields of chemistry, biomedicine, biology, with bottlenecks in integration and miniaturization needed a breakthrough. Here, a concept for a highly integrated valve-less piezoelectric micropump generating recirculating flow (VPMGRF) is proposed, simultaneously realizing innovation in theory and method. Based on fluid inertiaand energy dissipation of vortexes, a novel double-loop tube was designed to achieve fluid flow in different directions along various paths, with the flow characteristics at different cross-sectional areas explored through computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Afterwards, as valve bodies, the double-loop tubes were connected with a piezoelectric-actuated chamber to constitute the VPMGRF, which was followed by establishing a theoretical model of the vibration, fluid dynamics, and net flow rate. Eventually, experimental results showed that VPMGRFs could generate internal recirculating flow and had a pump effect. The maximum net flow rate reached 5.19 mL/min at 8 Hz, corresponding to a vibrator amplitude of 35 μm and an output pressure amplitude of 4.27 kPa. Furthermore, the larger the characteristic length of the cross section, the greater the amplitude of the vibrators, the larger the amplitude of output pressure, and the slower the flow rate.

Abstract:A number of micropumps have been proposed in the last few years based on different actuating principles and fabricated by different technologies. However, many of those micropumps have been designed taking into account primarily available microfabrication technologies rather than appropriate pump performance analysis. In fact, not all papers are available in the literature presenting theoretical models usable to describe the functioning and predict the performance of those micropumps. In this paper, we present a new micropump model and FEA method suitable for guiding the design and predicting the performance of a micropump actuated by a piezoelectric actuator. The model takes into account the influence of piezoelectric transducer and pump geometry. Simulations have been performed and compared with results of experiments on a prototype micropump fabricated in our laboratory.

Abstract:We present simulation and experimental studies of a piezo-electrically actuated microdiaphragm air pump, which is characterized by thin structure, large flow, and low power consumption. A novel large-displacement actuation structure is designed for the air pump. A prototype of the micro air pump is fabricated by precise fabrication. Furthermore, studies of modeling, simulation, and experiments are carried out. The experimental and simulation results demonstrate that both the pump's flow and the amplitude of the actuation structure's motion depend on the frequency of the input voltage. The maximal values of the flow and the amplitude will be obtained when the frequency of the input voltage is equal to the actuation structure's first-order natural frequency. The diaphragm air pump has the best performance when it works in resonance mode. With 20-V input, the flow and the amplitude of the air pump are 4.5 ml/s and 0.00041 m, respectively, and the power consumption of the pump can be as low as 3.18 mW. With the advantages of large flow, thin structure, and low power consumption, the diaphragm air pump has great potential applications for air supply for microfuel cells or the cooling of electronic devices. Abstract:In this study, a new type of thin, compact, and light weighed diaphragm micro-pump has been successfully developed to actuate the liquid by the vibration of a diaphragm. The micro-diaphragm pump with two valves is fabricated in an aluminum case by using highly accurate CNC machine, and the cross-section dimension is 5mm x 8mm. Both valves and diaphragm are manufactured from PDMS. The amplitude of vibration by a piezoelectric device produces an oscillating flow which may change the chamber volume by changing the curvature of a diaphragm. Several experimental set-ups for performance test in a single micro-diaphragm pump, isothermal flow open system, and a closed liquid cooling system is designed and implemented. The performance of one-side actuating micro-diaphragm pump is affected by the design of check valves, diaphragm, piezoelectric device, chamber volume, input voltage and frequency. The measured maximum flow rate of present design is 72 ml/min at zero total pump head in the range of operation frequency 70-180 Hz.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel diaphragm micro air pump actuated by piezoelectric element is presented. Some parameters of the air pump, such as flow rate, diaphragm's amplitude are analyzed. Based the analysis results, a prototype of the micro air pump is fabricated and measured. About pump's structural design, the feature that the displacement in the end of the bimorph is largest is fully availed of. The diaphragm is suspended by two bimorphs in the pump to increase greatly the volumetric ratio and flow rate. The air pump have advantages, such as simple structure, low power consumption, small thickness, no electromagnetic noise, high reliability and so on. The micro diaphragm air pump shows good application prospects in the fields of micro electronic devices' cooling and micro fuel cell's air supply. The experimental results demonstrate that the first order resonant frequency is about 120 Hz. When driving voltage is 50V, the air pump's flow rate is 192 ml/min at the state of resonating and its power consumption is less than 23 mW.

Abstract:Abstract In order to make the output flow of the valveless micropump larger and obtain continuous pumping capacity, a valveless piezoelectric micropump with a combination of V-shaped structure inlet and Y-shaped structure outlet is designed, which saves the design and installation of microvalve and makes the structure relatively simple and easy to process. In this paper, first, the operating principle of the valveless piezoelectric micro pump is analyzed; secondly, COMSOL simulation software was used to perform modal analysis on the drive and the appropriate vibration mode was obtained. The displacement trend of the piezoelectric vibrator was simulated and tested at the frequency of 40 Hz and different voltages; finally, 3D printing technology was used to produce an experimental prototype of the micro-pump, and t the specific size of the micro pump is 20 mm×20 mm×6 mm. The test results show that, driven by AC voltage, the discharge liquid of the valveless piezoelectric micropump can reach 658.8μl/min.

Abstract:Piezoelectric pumps play an important role in modern medical technology. To improve the flow rate of valveless piezoelectric pumps with flow tube structures and promote the miniaturization and integration of their designs, a cardioid flow tube valveless piezoelectric pump (CFTVPP) is proposed in this study. The symmetric dual-bend tube design of CFTVPP holds great potential in applications such as fluid mixing and heat dissipation systems. The structure and working principle of the CFTVPP are analyzed, and flow resistance and velocity equations are established. Furthermore, the flow characteristics of the cardioid flow tube (CFT) are investigated through computational fluid dynamics, and the output performance of valveless piezoelectric pumps with different bend radii is studied. Experimental results demonstrate that CFTVPP exhibits the pumping effect, with a maximum vibration amplitude of 182.5 μm (at 22 Hz, 100 V) and a maximum output flow rate of 5.69 mL/min (at 25 Hz, 100 V). The results indicate that a smaller bend radius of the converging bend leads to a higher output flow rate, while the performance of valveless piezoelectric pumps with different diverging bends shows insignificant differences. The CFTVPP offers advantages such as a high output flow rate, low cost, small size for easy integration, and ease of manufacturing.

Abstract:Abstract An open valveless micropump pumped by a disc-shaped piezoelectric actuator was developed, and its working principles were investigated. The electrode of the pump buzzer was divided into two semicircles as piezoelectric actuators, and single-phase or dual-phase AC driving potential was applied. The flow rate of the pump was analyzed when actuated in basic symmetric (W00) and anti-symmetric (W01) modes. The finite element package software ANSYS was used to analyze the resonant frequency and mode of the buzzer under fluid loading, and the vibration displacement generated by the single-phase and dual-phase time-harmonic actuation was both simulated by using an additional mass method and experimentally investigated. The experimental results show that the resonant frequency of the disc-shaped actuator decreased due to the fluid loading effect and as the gap distance between the conduit and the actuator decreased. The maximum flow rates of the W00 and W01 mode actuated pumps were 133.13 and 9.63 mL/min, respectively. The driving frequency with the highest pump efficiency was slightly lower than the resonance frequency of the fluid-loaded buzzer. Applying a hydrophobic treatment to the back of the buzzer decreased the resonance frequency under fluid loading. The results show that simulating the structural resonance frequency for various fluid loads by the additional mass method is feasible. The flow direction could be controlled by activating the W01 mode.

Abstract:As core components of microfluidic and wearable pneumatic electronic systems, mini valves are attracting a growing intellectual interest. However, most existing mini valves exhibit either excessive energy consumption or limited flow rate and holding pressure. To address these issues, this study proposes an energy-saving mini valve with large flow rate and high holding pressure. The implementation of electromagnetic bistable structure allows the valve to remain open or closed without energy consumption. In contrast to the small and intricate flow channels seen in conventional mini valves, the straight-through flow channel design with reduced flow resistance improves its flow rate properties. And the pressure resistance characteristics are enhanced by the use of permanent magnetic attraction for sealing. Furthermore, the valve is driven by a single coil to switch between two steady states, resulting in a more compact structure. We have developed valve prototypes with diameters of 10 mm and 6 mm. Performance evaluation tests have shown that it sustains a holding pressure as high as 100 kPa and a flow rate of 1.5 L/min (@ 3 kPa), while only expending an energy of 0.37 J during switch transitions. Given these attributes, this valve demonstrates significant potential for integration within wearable pneumatic electronic systems.

Abstract:A piezoelectrically actuated valveless micropump has been designed and developed. The principle components of this system are piezoelectrically actuated (PZT) metal diaphragms and a complete fluid flow system. The design of this pump mainly focuses on a cross junction, which is generated by a nozzle jet attached to a pump chamber and the intersection of two inlet channels and an outlet channel respectively. During each PZT diaphragm vibration cycle, the junction connecting the inlet and outlet channels with the nozzle jet permits consistencies in fluidic momentum and resistances in order to facilitate complete fluidic path throughout the system, in the absence of any physical valves. The entire micropump structure is fabricated as a plate-by-plate element of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) sheets and sandwiched to get required fluidic network as well as the overall device. In order to identify the flow characteristics, and to validate the test results with numerical simulation data, FEM analysis using ANSYS was carried out and an eigenfrequency analysis was performed to the PZT diaphragm using COMSOL Multiphysics. In addition, the control system of the pump was designed and developed to change the applied frequency to the piezoelectric diaphragms. The experimental data revealed that the maximum flow rate is 31.15 mL/min at a frequency of 100 Hz. Our proposed design is not only for a specific application but also useful in a wide range of biomedical applications.

A Miniaturized Wireless Micropump Enabled by Confined Acoustic Streaming

Abstract:Miniaturization of health care, biomedical, and chemical systems is highly desirable for developing point-of-care testing (POCT) technologies. In system miniaturization, micropumps represent one of the major bottlenecks due to their undesirable pumping performance at such small sizes. Here, we developed a microelectromechanical system fabricated acoustic micropump based on an ultrahigh-frequency bulk acoustic wave resonator. The concept of an inner-boundary-confined acoustic jet was introduced to facilitate unidirectional flow. Benefitting from the high resonant frequency and confined acoustic streaming, the micropump reaches 32.620 kPa/cm 3 (pressure/size) and 11.800 ml/min∙cm 3 (flow rate/size), showing a 2-order-of-magnitude improvement in the energy transduction efficiency compared with the existing acoustic micropumps. As a proof of concept, the micropump was constructed as a wearable and wirelessly powered integrated drug delivery system with a size of only 9×9×9 mm 3 and a weight of 1.16 g. It was demonstrated for ocular disease treatment through animal experimentation and a human pilot test. With superior pumping performance, miniaturized pump size, ultralow power consumption, and complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor compatibility, we expect it to be readily applied to various POCT applications including clinical diagnosis, prognosis, and drug delivery systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we improved the design of a membrane peristaltic micropump. The pump was driven by a rotating motor with magnetically attracted steel balls on top. The size of the micropump was significantly reduced to realize small flow rate and high pressure, to serve for precision delivering applications. Testing results showed that the pump can realize small flow rate from 0.93 to 12.73 μL/min, with very high linearity. The back pressure could reach more than 83 kPa until the PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) channel structure was destroyed under high pressure. The pulsation problem of the peristaltic pump was also mentioned, as well as the possible solution to deliver a certain amount of small sample volume.
