INVESTIGATION OF THE ANTIMICROBIAL, ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTI- INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY OF COMPOUND ISOLATED FROM MURRAYA KOENIGII

Abstract:In the present investigation, the compound responsible for antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in methanolic extract of leaves of Murraya koenigii L. was determined by Perkin- Elmer GC Claurus 500 system and Gas Chromatograph interfaced to a Mass Spectrometer GC/MS technique. GC-MS analysis of methanol extract of the leaves of the plant revealed the existence of 1- Methyl-pyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid (69.00%), Ethyl α-d glucopyranoside (13.36%), Isolongifolene, Isolongifolene (3.68%), c-Himachalene (2.88%), 1,2-Ethanediol, monoacetate (2.79%), 1,2- Benzenedicarboxylic acid, di-isooctyl ester (2.55%). The pure compounds were separated using a Shimadzo LC 2010 HPLC system (Kyoto, Japan), equipped with a Shimadzo LC 2010 UV-VIS detector with a thermostated flow cell and a selectable two wavelengths of 190 - 370 nm or 371-600nm. These were further screened for their antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. All the compounds possessed some or the other activity. It was found that the compound 9, 12 octadecadienoic acid having the retention time 18.81 and the peak area 0.60 % had potent antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. The compound showed potent antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis, E.coli, Proteus vulgaris, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, Saccharomyces cerevisae, Aspergillus niger and Penicillium notatum at MIC value from 0.05-0.56 µg/ml. The compound showed less activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa in comparison to other pathogens. The compound possessed to have strong antioxidant activity with IC 50 value of 45.65 µg/ml as measured by DPPH assay. The compound possessed 85 % reduction in paw edema at a dose of 150 µg/ml in reference to standard anti-inflammatory drug, aspirin which showed 68.62 % reduction. The compound was further assayed for cellular toxicity to fresh sheep erythrocytes and found to have no cellular toxicity.
Deep learning in sex estimation from a peripheral quantitative computed tomography scan of the fourth lumbar vertebra—a proof-of-concept study

Abstract:Sex estimation is a key element in the analysis of unknown skeletal remains. The vertebrae display clear sex discrepancy and have proven accurate in conventional morphometric sex estimation. This proof-of-concept study aimed to investigate the possibility to develop a deep learning algorithm for sex estimation even from a single peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) slice of the fourth lumbar vertebra (L4). The study utilized a total of 117 vertebrae from the Terry Anatomical Collection. There were 58 male and 59 female cadavers, all of the white ethnicity, with the average age at death 49 years and a range of 24 to 77 years. A coronal pQCT scan was taken from the midway of the L4 corpus. Sex estimation was performed in a total of 19 neural network architectures implemented in the AIDeveloper software. Of the explored architectures, a LeNet5 -based algorithm reached the highest accuracy of 86.4% in the test set. Sex-specific classification rates were 90.9% among males and 81.8% among females. This preliminary finding advances the field by encouraging and directing future research on artificial intelligence-based methods in sex estimation from individual skeletal traits such as the vertebrae. Combining quickly obtained imaging data with automated deep learning algorithms may establish a valuable pipeline for forensic anthropology and provide aid when combined with traditional methods.

Abstract:Cranial sex estimation often relies on visual assessments made by a forensic anthropologist following published standards. However, these methods are prone to human bias and may be less accurate when applied to populations other than those for which they were originally developed with. This study explores an automatic deep learning (DL) framework to enhance sex estimation accuracy and reduce bias. Utilising 200 cranial CT scans of Indonesian individuals, various DL network configurations were evaluated against a human observer. The most accurate DL network, which learned to estimate sex and cranial traits as an auxiliary task, achieved a classification accuracy of 97%, outperforming the human observer at 82%. Grad-CAM visualisations indicated that the DL model appears to focus on certain cranial traits, while also considering overall size and shape. This study demonstrates the potential of using DL to assist forensic anthropologists in providing more accurate and less biased estimations of skeletal sex.

Diagnostic Performance of Convolutional Neural Network-Based TW3 Bone Age Assessment System

Abstract:Background: Bone age can reflect the true growth and development status of a child; thus, it plays a critical role in evaluating growth and endocrine disorders.This study established and validated an optimized Tanner-Whitehouse 3 artificial intelligence (TW3-AI) bone age assessment (BAA) system based on a convolutional neural network (CNN).Methods: A data set of 9,059 clinical radiographs of the left hand was obtained from the picture archives and communication systems (PACS) between January 2012 and December 2016.Among these, 8,005/9,059 (88%) samples were treated as the training set for model implementation, 804/9,059 (9%) samples as the validation set for parameters optimization, and the remaining 250/9,059 (3%) samples were used to verify the accuracy and reliability of the model compared to that of 4 experienced endocrinologists and 2 experienced radiologists.The overall variation of TW3-metacarpophalangeal, radius, ulna and short bones (RUS) and TW3-Carpal bone score, as well as each bone (13 RUS + 7 Carpal) between reviewers and the AI, were compared by Bland-Altman (BA) chart and Kappa test, respectively.Furthermore, the time consumption between the model and reviewers was also compared. Results:The performance of TW3-AI model was highly consistent with the reviewers' overall estimation, and the root mean square (RMS) was 0.50 years.The accuracy of the BAA of the TW3-AI model was better than the estimate of the reviewers.Further analysis revealed that human interpretations of the male capitate, hamate, the first distal and fifth middle phalanx and female capitate, the trapezoid, and the third and fifth middle phalanx, were most inconsistent.The average image processing time was 1.5±0.2s in the TW3-AI model, which was significantly shorter than manual interpretation. Conclusions:The diagnostic performance of CNN-based TW3 BAA was accurate and timesaving, and possesses better stability compared to diagnostics made by experienced experts.

Abstract:Prompt personal identification is required during disasters that can result in many casualties. To rapidly estimate sex based on skull structure, this study applied deep learning using two-dimensional silhouette images, obtained from head postmortem computed tomography (PMCT), to enhance the outline shape of the skull. We investigated the process of sex estimation using silhouette images viewed from different angles and majority votes. A total of 264 PMCT cases (132 cases for each sex) were used for transfer learning with two deep-learning models (AlexNet and VGG16). VGG16 exhibited the highest accuracy (89.8%) for lateral projections. The accuracy improved to 91.7% when implementing a majority vote based on the results of multiple projection angles. Moreover, silhouette images can be obtained from simple and popular X-ray imaging in addition to PMCT. Thus, this study demonstrated the feasibility of sex estimation by combining silhouette images with deep learning. The results implied that X-ray images can be used for personal identification.

Abstract:Formulation of dairy cow rations should consider the following points regarding nitrogen utilization by lactating cows. (a) Maintenance of ruminal ammonia nitrogen in excess of 5 mg/100 ml rumen fluid has no effect on microbial protein production. (b)Supplemental nonprotein nitrogen is not utilized in typical dairy and feedlot beef rations containing more than 12 to 13% crude protein(dry matter basis). (c)Nonprotein nitrogen is approximately equal to true protein as a source of nitrogen in typical dairy and feedlot rations containing not more than 12 to 13% crude protein. (d)A scheme based upon metabolizable protein (absorbable protein) for calculating requirements and comparing protein sources is superior to crude or digestible protein designations. Ultimate expression of the requirement may be in terms of crude protein for the sake of simplicity. (e)One kilogram of crude protein, regardless of nitrogen source, equals about .75kg metabolizable protein in typical dairy and feedlot beef rations containing not more than 12 to 13% crude protein. One kilogram of plant protein (true protein) fed in excess of an amount equivalent to 12 to 13% dietary protein equals about .3 kg metabolizable protein. (f)Protein supplementation of lactating cows might be related more to stage of lactation than to milk production. (g)Lactating cows having above average lactational ability may benefit from dietary protein as high as 16 to 17% (dry matter basis) during the first third of lactation. (h)Cows in the latter two-thirds of lactation appear to require 12.5% dietary protein or less. (i)Plant protein (true protein) should be the supplemental sources of nitrogen during the first third of lactation, with NPN providing most, if not all, the supplemental nitrogen during the last two-thirds of lactation.

Abstract:Determining the fundamental characteristics that define a face as "feminine" or "masculine" has long fascinated anatomists and plastic surgeons, particularly those involved in aesthetic and gender-affirming surgery. Previous studies in this area have relied on manual measurements, comparative anatomy, and heuristic landmark-based feature extraction. In this study, we collected retrospectively at Cedars Sinai Medical Center (CSMC) a dataset of 98 skull samples, which is the first dataset of this kind of 3D medical imaging. We then evaluated the accuracy of multiple deep learning neural network architectures on sex classification with this dataset. Specifically, we evaluated methods representing three different 3D data modeling approaches: Resnet3D, PointNet++, and MeshNet. Despite the limited number of imaging samples, our testing results show that all three approaches achieve AUC scores above 0.9 after convergence. PointNet++ exhibits the highest accuracy, while MeshNet has the lowest. Our findings suggest that accuracy is not solely dependent on the sparsity of data representation but also on the architecture design, with MeshNet's lower accuracy likely due to the lack of a hierarchical structure for progressive data abstraction. Furthermore, we studied a problem related to sex determination, which is the analysis of the various morphological features that affect sex classification. We proposed and developed a new method based on morphological gradients to visualize features that influence model decision making. The method based on morphological gradients is an alternative to the standard saliency map, and the new method provides better visualization of feature importance. Our study is the first to develop and evaluate deep learning models for analyzing 3D facial skull images to identify imaging feature differences between individuals assigned male or female at birth. These findings may be useful for planning and evaluating craniofacial surgery, particularly gender-affirming procedures, such as facial feminization surgery.

Deep learning for sex determination: Analyzing over 200,000 panoramic radiographs

Abstract:The objective of this study is to assess the performance of an innovative AI-powered tool for sex determination using panoramic radiographs (PR) and to explore factors affecting the performance of the convolutional neural network (CNN). The study involved 207,946 panoramic dental X-rays and their corresponding reports from 15 clinical centers in São Paulo, Brazil. The PRs were acquired with four different devices, and 58% of the patients were female. Data preprocessing included anonymizing the exams, extracting pertinent information from the reports, such as sex, age, type of dentition, and number of missing teeth, and organizing the data into a PostgreSQL database. Two neural network architectures, a standard CNN and a ResNet, were utilized for sex classification, with both undergoing hyperparameter tuning and cross-validation to ensure optimal performance. The CNN model achieved 95.02% accuracy in sex estimation, with image resolution being a significant influencing factor. The ResNet model attained over 86% accuracy in subjects older than 6 years and over 96% in those over 16 years. The algorithm performed better on female images, and the area under the curve (AUC) exceeded 96% for most age groups, except the youngest. Accuracy values were also assessed for different dentition types (deciduous, mixed, and permanent) and missing teeth. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of an AI-driven tool for sex determination using PR and emphasizes the role of image resolution, age, and sex in determining the algorithm's performance.

Abstract:Purpose: Despite the proliferation of numerous morphometric and anthropometric methods for sex identification based on linear, angular, and regional measurements of various parts of the body, these methods are subject to error due to the observer's knowledge and expertise. This study aimed to explore the possibility of automated sex determination using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) based on lateral cephalometric radiographs.Materials and Methods: Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 1,476 Iranian subjects (794 women and 682 men) from 18 to 49 years of age were included. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were considered as a network input and output layer including 2 classes (male and female). Eighty percent of the data was used as a training set and the rest as a test set. Hyperparameter tuning of each network was done after preprocessing and data augmentation steps. The predictive performance of different architectures (DenseNet, ResNet, and VGG) was evaluated based on their accuracy in test sets.Results: The CNN based on the DenseNet121 architecture, with an overall accuracy of 90%, had the best predictive power in sex determination. The prediction accuracy of this model was almost equal for men and women. Furthermore, with all architectures, the use of transfer learning improved predictive performance.Conclusion: The results confirmed that a CNN could predict a person's sex with high accuracy. This prediction was independent of human bias because feature extraction was done automatically. However, for more accurate sex determination on a wider scale, further studies with larger sample sizes are desirable.
Automatic 3D pelvimetry framework in CT images and its validation

Abstract:In the field of spinal pathology, sagittal balance of the spine is usually judged by the spatial structure and morphology of pelvis, which can be represented by pelvic parameters. Pelvic parameters, including pelvic incidence, pelvic tilt and sacral slope, are therefore essential for the diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders, however, it is a time-consuming and laborious procedure to measure these parameters by traditional methods. In this paper, an automatic measurement framework for pelvic CT images was proposed to calculate three-dimensional (3D) pelvic parameters with the support of deep learning technology. Pelvic images were first preprocessed, and 3D reconstruction was then performed to obtain 3D pelvic model by the Visualization Toolkit. DRINet was trained to segment the femoral head region in the pelvic images, and 3D sphere fitting was performed to locate the femoral heads. In addition, VGG16 was adopted to recognize images containing superior sacral endplate, and the plane growth algorithm was used to fit the plane so that the midpoint and normal vector of the superior sacral endplate could be obtained. Finally, 3D pelvic parameters were automatically calculated, and compared with manual measurements for 15 patients. The proposed framework automatically generated 3D pelvic models, and calculated two-dimensional (2D) and 3D pelvic parameters from continuous CT images. Experiments demonstrated that the framework can greatly speed up the calculation of pelvic parameters, and these parameters are accurate when compared with the manual measurements. In conclusion, the proposed framework demonstrates good performance on automatic pelvimetry measurement by incorporating deep learning technology, and can well replace the traditional methods for pelvic parameter measurement.

Study of Sexual Dimorphism in Metatarsal Bones: Geometric and Inertial Analysis of the Three-Dimensional Reconstructed Models

Abstract:The aim of the present paper is to determine the sex of the individual using three-dimensional geometric and inertial analyses of metatarsal bones. Metatarsals of 60 adult Chinese subjects of both sexes were scanned using Aquilion One 320 Slice CT Scanner. The three-dimensional models of the metatarsals were reconstructed, and thereafter, a novel software using the center of mass set as the origin and the three principal axes of inertia was employed for model alignment. Eight geometric and inertial variables were assessed: the bone length, bone width, bone height, surface-area-to-volume ratio, bone density, and principal moments of inertia around the x, y, and z axes. Furthermore, the discriminant functions were established using stepwise discriminant function analysis. A cross-validation procedure was performed to evaluate the discriminant accuracy of functions. The results indicated that inertial variables exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, especially principal moments of inertia around the z axis. The highest dimorphic values were found in the surface-area-to-volume ratio, principal moments of inertia around the z axis, and bone height. The accuracy rate of the discriminant functions for sex determination ranged from 88.3% to 98.3% (88.3%-98.3% cross-validated). The highest accuracy of function was established based on the third metatarsal bone. This study showed for the first time that the principal moment of inertia of the human bone may be successfully implemented for sex estimation. In conclusion, the sex of the individual can be accurately estimated using a combination of geometric and inertial variables of the metatarsal bones. The accuracy should be further confirmed in a larger sample size and be tested or independently developed for distinct population/age groups before the functions are widely applied in unidentified skeletons in forensic and bioarcheological contexts.

Abstract:Bone age assessment (BAA) from hand radiographs is crucial for diagnosing endocrinology disorders in adolescents and supplying therapeutic investigation. In practice, due to the conventional clinical assessment being a subjective estimation, the accuracy of BAA relies highly on the pediatrician's professionalism and experience. Recently, many deep learning methods have been proposed for the automatic estimation of bone age and had good results. However, these methods do not exploit sufficient discriminative information or require additional manual annotations of critical bone regions that are important biological identifiers in skeletal maturity, which may restrict the clinical application of these approaches. In this research, we propose a novel two-stage deep learning method for BAA without any manual region annotation, which consists of a cascaded critical bone region extraction network and a gender-assisted bone age estimation network. First, the cascaded critical bone region extraction network automatically and sequentially locates two discriminative bone regions the visual heat maps. Second, in order to obtain an accurate BAA, the extracted critical bone regions are fed into the gender-assisted bone age estimation network. The results showed that the proposed method achieved a mean absolute error (MAE) of 5.45 months on the public dataset Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and 3.34 months on our private dataset.
Human gender estimation from CT images of skull using deep feature selection and feature fusion

Abstract:This research endeavors to prognosticate gender by harnessing the potential of skull computed tomography (CT) images, given the seminal role of gender identification in the realm of identification. The study encompasses a corpus of CT images of cranial structures derived from 218 male and 203 female subjects, constituting a total cohort of 421 individuals within the age bracket of 25 to 65 years. Employing deep learning, a prominent subset of machine learning algorithms, the study deploys convolutional neural network (CNN) models to excavate profound attributes inherent in the skull CT images. In pursuit of the research objective, the focal methodology involves the exclusive application of deep learning algorithms to image datasets, culminating in an accuracy rate of 96.4%. The gender estimation process exhibits a precision of 96.1% for male individuals and 96.8% for female individuals. The precision performance varies across different selections of feature numbers, namely 100, 300, and 500, alongside 1000 features without feature selection. The respective precision rates for these selections are recorded as 95.0%, 95.5%, 96.2%, and 96.4%. It is notable that gender estimation via visual radiography mitigates the discrepancy in measurements between experts, concurrently yielding an expedited estimation rate. Predicated on the empirical findings of this investigation, it is inferred that the efficacy of the CNN model, the configurational intricacies of the classifier, and the judicious selection of features collectively constitute pivotal determinants in shaping the performance attributes of the proposed methodology.

Abstract:Automatic CT segmentation of proximal femur is crucial for the diagnosis and risk stratification of orthopedic diseases; however, current methods for the femur CT segmentation mainly rely on manual interactive segmentation, which is time-consuming and has limitations in both accuracy and reproducibility. In this study, we proposed an approach based on deep learning for the automatic extraction of the periosteal and endosteal contours of proximal femur in order to differentiate cortical and trabecular bone compartments. A three-dimensional (3D) end-to-end fully convolutional neural network, which can better combine the information between neighbor slices and get more accurate segmentation results, was developed for our segmentation task. 100 subjects aged from 50 to 87 years with 24,399 slices of proximal femur CT images were enrolled in this study. The separation of cortical and trabecular bone derived from the QCT software MIAF-Femur was used as the segmentation reference. We randomly divided the whole dataset into a training set with 85 subjects for 10-fold cross-validation and a test set with 15 subjects for evaluating the performance of models. Two models with the same network structures were trained and they achieved a dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 97.87% and 96.49% for the periosteal and endosteal contours, respectively. To verify the excellent performance of our model for femoral segmentation, we measured the volume of different parts of the femur and compared it with the ground truth and the relative errors between predicted result and ground truth are all less than 5%. It demonstrated a strong potential for clinical use, including the hip fracture risk prediction and finite element analysis.

The dose of radiation and expensiveness of CT make anterior-posterior pelvic radiograph an appropriate alternative procedure. In this study, we applied a deep learning approach on anteroposterior pelvic X-rays to measure anatomical version, eliminating the necessity of using Computed tomography scan. Methods: The right and left acetabular version angles of the hips of 300 patients are computed using their CT images. The proposed deep learning model, Attention on Pretrained-VGG16 for Bone Age, is applied to the AP images of the included population. The age and gender of these people are added as two other inputs to the last fully connected layer of attention mechanism. As the output, the angles of both hips are predicted. Results: The angles of hips computed on CT increase as people get older with the mean values of 16.54 and 16.11 (right and left angles) for men and 20.61 and 19.55 for women in our dataset. The predicted errors in the estimation of right and left angles using the proposed method of deep learning are in the accurate region of error (<=3 degrees) which shows the ability of the proposed method in measuring anatomical version based on AP images. Conclusion: The suggested algorithm, applying pre-trained vgg16 on the AP images of the pelvis of patients followed by an attention model considering age and gender of patients, can assess version accurately using only AP radiographs while obviating the need for CT scan. The applied technique of estimation of anatomical acetabular version based on AP pelvic images using DL approaches, to the best of authors' knowledge, has not been published yet.
Deep Learning to Segment Pelvic Bones: Large-scale CT Datasets and Baseline Models

Abstract:Purpose: Pelvic bone segmentation in CT has always been an essential step in clinical diagnosis and surgery planning of pelvic bone diseases. Existing methods for pelvic bone segmentation are either hand-crafted or semi-automatic and achieve limited accuracy when dealing with image appearance variations due to the multi-site domain shift, the presence of contrasted vessels, coprolith and chyme, bone fractures, low dose, metal artifacts, etc. Due to the lack of a large-scale pelvic CT dataset with annotations, deep learning methods are not fully explored. Methods: In this paper, we aim to bridge the data gap by curating a large pelvic CT dataset pooled from multiple sources and different manufacturers, including 1, 184 CT volumes and over 320, 000 slices with different resolutions and a variety of the above-mentioned appearance variations. Then we propose for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, to learn a deep multi-class network for segmenting lumbar spine, sacrum, left hip, and right hip, from multiple-domain images simultaneously to obtain more effective and robust feature representations. Finally, we introduce a post-processing tool based on the signed distance function (SDF) to eliminate false predictions while retaining correctly predicted bone fragments. Results: Extensive experiments on our dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our automatic method, achieving an average Dice of 0.987 for a metal-free volume. SDF post-processor yields a decrease of 10.5% in hausdorff distance by maintaining important bone fragments in post-processing phase. Conclusion: We believe this large-scale dataset will promote the development of the whole community and plan to open source the images, annotations, codes, and trained baseline models at <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://github.com/ICT-MIRACLE-lab/CTPelvic1K" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>.

Abstract:ObjectiveAdult age estimation (AAE) is a challenging task. Deep learning (DL) could be a supportive tool. This study aimed to develop DL models for AAE based on CT images and compare their performance to the manual visual scoring method.MethodsChest CT were reconstructed using volume rendering (VR) and maximum intensity projection (MIP) separately. Retrospective data of 2500 patients aged 20.00–69.99 years were obtained. The cohort was split into training (80%) and validation (20%) sets. Additional independent data from 200 patients were used as the test set and external validation set. Different modality DL models were developed accordingly. Comparisons were hierarchically performed by VR versus MIP, single-modality versus multi-modality, and DL versus manual method. Mean absolute error (MAE) was the primary parameter of comparison.ResultsA total of 2700 patients (mean age = 45.24 years ± 14.03 [SD]) were evaluated. Of single-modality models, MAEs yielded by VR were lower than MIP. Multi-modality models generally yielded lower MAEs than the optimal single-modality model. The best-performing multi-modality model obtained the lowest MAEs of 3.78 in males and 3.40 in females. On the test set, DL achieved MAEs of 3.78 in males and 3.92 in females, which were far better than the MAEs of 8.90 and 6.42 respectively, for the manual method. For the external validation, MAEs were 6.05 in males and 6.68 in females for DL, and 6.93 and 8.28 for the manual method.ConclusionsDL demonstrated better performance than the manual method in AAE based on CT reconstruction of the costal cartilage.Clinical relevance statementAging leads to diseases, functional performance deterioration, and both physical and physiological damage over time. Accurate AAE may aid in diagnosing the personalization of aging processes.Key Points• VR-based DL models outperformed MIP-based models with lower MAEs and higher R2 values.• All multi-modality DL models showed better performance than single-modality models in adult age estimation.• DL models achieved a better performance than expert assessments.

Abstract:Background Accurate segmentation of pelvic bones is an initial step to achieve accurate detection and localisation of pelvic bone metastases. This study presents a deep learning-based approach for automated segmentation of normal pelvic bony structures in multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) using a 3D convolutional neural network (CNN). Methods This retrospective study included 264 pelvic mpMRI data obtained between 2018 and 2019. The manual annotations of pelvic bony structures (which included lumbar vertebra, sacrococcyx, ilium, acetabulum, femoral head, femoral neck, ischium, and pubis) on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) images were used to create reference standards. A 3D U-Net CNN was employed for automatic pelvic bone segmentation. Additionally, 60 mpMRI data from 2020 were included and used to evaluate the model externally. Results The CNN achieved a high Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) average in both testing (0.80 [DWI images] and 0.85 [ADC images]) and external (0.79 [DWI images] and 0.84 [ADC images]) validation sets. Pelvic bone volumes measured with manual and CNN-predicted segmentations were highly correlated ( R 2 value of 0.84–0.97) and in close agreement (mean bias of 2.6–4.5 cm 3 ). A SCORE system was designed to qualitatively evaluate the model for which both testing and external validation sets achieved high scores in terms of both qualitative evaluation and concordance between two readers (ICC = 0.904; 95% confidence interval: 0.871–0.929). Conclusions A deep learning-based method can achieve automated pelvic bone segmentation on DWI and ADC images with suitable quantitative and qualitative performance.
