Abstract:With the increasing pervasiveness of ICTs in the fabric of economic activities, the corporate digital divide has emerged as a new crucial topic to evaluate the IT competencies and the digital gap between firms and territories. Given the scarcity of available granular data to measure the phenomenon, most studies have used survey data. To bridge the empirical gap, we scrape the website homepage of 182 705 Italian firms, extracting ten features related to their digital footprint characteristics to develop a new corporate digital assessment index. Our results highlight a significant digital divide across dimensions, sectors and geographical locations of Italian firms, opening up new perspectives on monitoring and near-real-time data-driven analysis.
Unpacking Social Capital

Abstract:We use novel survey data from Italy to shed light on key questions regarding the measurement of social capital and the use of social capital indicators for empirical work. Our data cover a sample of over 600,000 respondents interviewed between 2000 and 2015. We identify four distinct components of social capital – (i) social participation, (ii) political participation, (iii) general trust, and (iv) trust in institutions – and examine how they relate to each other. We then study how each dimension of social capital relates to various socioeconomic factors both at the individual and the aggregate level, and to various proxies of social capital commonly used in the literature. Finally, building on previous work, we investigate to what extent different dimensions of social capital predict differences in key economic, political, and health outcomes. Our findings support the view that social capital is a multifaceted object with multiple dimensions that, while related, are distinct from each other. Future work should take such multi-dimensionality into account and carefully consider what measure of social capital to use.

Abstract:The present paper investigates the problem of defining an easy-to-implement tool to evaluate the Digital Divide (DD) among and, above all, within countries to grasp sub-national divides and appropriately inform policy-makers guiding digital transformation processes. With this aim in mind, the study focuses on the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), the most recent and currently used CI for DD measurement across European states. A methodology employing correlation and principal component analysis is adopted to assess redundancies in the DESI and obtain a reduced version of the index with a significantly lower number of indicators. Experiments performed using the 2020 data related to the 29 EU countries demonstrate that the reduced DESI produces very similar results to the original one, thus proving the existence of redundancies in its current structure. An extensive analysis of the Italian case shows how the reduced version of the index can be more easily applied at the sub-national level, thus helping to detect DD between regions and offering meaningful policy-making support. In particular, a framework to analyze the obtained results is proposed to support the identification of adequate interventions at the national level or targeted actions to mitigate digital disparities in lagging regions.

Abstract:Purpose The study aims to investigate whether and how digital transformation, in terms of digital collaboration, joint efforts with internal/external partners to achieve common goals and the adoption of digital tools supporting this practice, affect social innovation capital in the context of small innovative enterprises (SIEs). Design/methodology/approach The research hypotheses derived from the analysis of the literature, evaluating how sharing resources, sharing intensity and digital patterns affect the collective capacity of SIEs to innovate, were investigated by applying multiple regression analysis. Data were retrieved from a sample of Italian SIEs through an online survey. Findings The main findings suggest that the propensity to spread resources and the sharing intensity positively affect the collective capacity of SIEs to innovate. Also, the effect of resources sharing on collective innovation increases as more digital patterns are used as tools. The connection is weaker for the intensity of resources sharing. Research limitations/implications The study is conducted on Italian SIEs, a particular cluster of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). It would be interesting to compare and contrast the results of an analysis of a large sample of international companies, of different sizes and belonging to digital and non-digital sectors. Originality/value The results enrich the existing literature on social innovation capital, by clarifying its competitive benefits on the characteristic context of the SIEs and underlining the mediating role of the digital patterns.

Abstract:The study focuses on the evaluation the relationship between Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) and its five dimensions, and Social Economic Development (SED) measured by four perspectives namely Social Progress, Corruption Perception, Global Innovation and Doing Business. In particular, the analysis was carried out by elaborating a statistical model that involved both digital and socio-economic aspects. The study assesses the correlation levels, also evaluating their characteristics, between these variables. Moreover, the analysis pinpoints the most significant digital dimensions to provide investment strategy information to the policy makers in order to enhance the countries’ socio-economic contexts.

Abstract:We study the effect of the diffusion of digitalization, measured as the level of expenditures in digital technologies, on labor demand within the manufacturing sector. We exploit unique information from a focus study of the quarterly survey of Unioncamere Piemonte (one of Italy's most industrialized and technologically advanced regions) to measure the extent to which planned digital technologies investments impact hiring propensity, differentiated by educational level. Based on a representative sample of non-micro firms, our findings suggest a positive relationship between digital investments and the probability of hiring highly educated workers, mainly driven by the demand for individuals with a post-secondary technical institute (ITS) diploma and post-MSc qualifications or a PhD in STEM fields. Conversely, we also find that digital investments negatively influence the probability of hiring low-educated individuals, primarily referring to the demand for workers with secondary education. Our results reveal firms' human capital upscaling dynamics powered by digitalization processes.

Abstract:The digital divide is the gap among population sub-groups in accessing and/or using digital technologies. For instance, older people show a lower propensity to have a broadband connection, use the Internet, and adopt new technologies than the younger ones. Motivated by the analysis of the heterogeneity in the use of digital technologies, we build a bipartite network concerning the presence of various digital skills in individuals from three different European countries: Finland, Italy, and Bulgaria. Bipartite networks provide a useful structure for representing relationships between two disjoint sets of nodes, formally called sending and receiving nodes. The goal is to perform a clustering of individuals (sending nodes) based on their digital skills (receiving nodes) for each country. In this regard, we employ a Mixture of Latent Trait Analyzers (MLTA) accounting for concomitant variables, which allows us to (i) cluster individuals according to their individual profile; (ii) analyze how socio-economic and demographic characteristics, as well as intergenerational ties, influence individual digitalization. Results show that the type of digitalization substantially depends on age, income and level of education, while the presence of children in the household seems to play an important role in the digitalization process in Italy and Finland only.

Abstract:This article investigates the interaction between digital capital and some offline components (economic, cultural, political, social and personal) that represent the background against which we access and use the Internet. Based on a stratified sample of the UK population (868), six indexes (one for each component) were generated through factor analysis and univariate analysis. We summarised them into a unique model by performing a multiple linear regression to evaluate the role-played by offline components in the development/reinforcement of digital capital. The interaction between these new indexes and the digital capital index shows that, with the exception of the political component, all offline backgrounds positively contribute to digital capital. Moreover, the multiple regression analysis shows that the economic and social components have the strongest influence on digital capital.

Abstract:We conducted a series of studies in order to develop a tool to assess social media capital, that is, more specifically, individual confidence in the use of social media sites and in their application to maintain and increase social capital. In our first study, we created the social media capital (SMC) scale by adapting parts of two already existing instruments and administered it to 6935 people to test its psychometric properties and dimensionality. After having validated the SMC in its final 7-item form, we proceeded to assess its external validity in two subsequent studies, by testing it against measures for Internet self-efficacy (study 2; n = 3100 ) and motives to use the Internet and social media addiction (study 3; n = 244 ). Overall, the SMC displayed satisfactory psychometric properties and appears to be a sound measure of social media capital.

Abstract:The article analysed theoretical approaches towards understanding digital capital as a new form of non-material capital which becomes a key human resource in the context of digitalization of all spheres of public life. It investigated the dynamics of theoretical insights into the forms of non-material capital discussing such concepts as “information capital”, “information habitus”, etc. The study discussed the contribution of the French sociologist P. Bourdieu into the conceptualization of non-material capital. The results of the latest research into digital capital in both international and Russian academic discourse were analyzed. The article reviewed critical reflections on the opportunities for the empirical analysis of digital capital: digital capital index, "digital passport", etc. Formation of digital capital and its measurement model is analysed through the systematization of the empirical research in this area. We conducted a series of expert interviews conducted during summer and autumn of 2021 to demonstrate how the concept of digital capital is perceived by Russian media researchers, educators, journalists, and representatives of the legislative power of the Russian Federation. Thematic analysis of the respondents' answers made it possible to identify the main sub-themes of digital capital in expert discourse: well-being of the individual, digital content, digital transformation, material resources, government, digital inequality, media education and media literacy. The article pointed to the importance of digital capital as a new hybrid meta capital in the professional and personal spheres of human life in the modern digital world, as well as to the role of the state in overcoming digital inequality and forming digital capital of citizens. We identified the issue of measuring digital capital given the rapid development of digital media communications and emergence of new services, platforms and technologies. The research provided some insights into such aspects of digital capital as safe functioning in the digital media communication environment and capacity to create and distribute digital content. The study discussed the specifics of measuring and constructing digital capital in the Russian Federation determined by the complexity of climatic, territorial and other characteristics.

Abstract:The hypercompetitive global economy of the 21st century is a hub of innovation, technology, talent, skills, speed, efficiency, productivity, and satisfaction. Within this context, the organizations are looking intensely for people with skills and talents that can differentiate themselves in all that noise. The human capital became slowly but surely a mean of efficiency and growth, especially through the premises of digitization, and a key issue of sustainability. The current research is meant to identify and highlight any correlations that might appear between the population’s welfare of 11 Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs) which are members of the European Union (EU), and the components of the digitization trend, including the new human cloud industry, ICT, and the connectivity to the Internet of Things. In order to achieve the needed insights, the multiple regression analysis was employed, and the latter tested the panel models with fixed effects, both from a temporal and country perspective. The results showcased a positive connection between the dependent and independent variables, confirming that the digitization of the economy and the developed human capital will ultimately lead to the increase of population’s welfare. Moreover, the findings are consistent with specific insights for each of the 11 CEECs, showing that digitization and the influence of human capital is differentiated across the latter in terms of their overall effect and amplitude. The research is limited by the timeframe and countries included in the study, and it can be furthered by determining the impact of digitization on the economies of the EU28 countries grouped by level of development, and by using other significant indicators for analysis.

Abstract:Within the evolving financial industry, characterised by the proliferation of FinTech and exacerbated by the Covid-19 , this paper investigates the unexplored relationship between financial, social, infrastructural factors and the level of digital financial divide (DFD) in Europe. Applying a difference-in-difference model, the study reveals that innovation in financial services correlates with a reduced DFD, further reinforced by improved digital infrastructure and social progress. However, the post-Covid environment has widened the gap in EU financially illiterate regions. Our results hold relevance for policymakers, governments, and supervisory banking authorities, indicating the most effective areas for intervention in lowering the country's DFD, but they could also support banks in the design of tailor-made digitalization strategies.

Abstract:Although numerous studies have investigated the determinants of users' acceptance of online channels, little attention has been paid to the continuous usage of a direct bank. To address this research gap, we analysed data collected via semi-structured interviews and a survey questionnaire distributed in 2017 to a sample of Italian bank customers. Responses were evaluated using a different statistical methodology based on the Shapley Value regression analysis. In brief, user-friendliness and economic advantages appear to be more decisive at an early stage of adoption. Moreover, structural assurance mechanisms (e.g. clarifying security policies and guarantees) have a robust impact on keeping customers online and loyal to electronic channels. Surprisingly, accessibility and compatibility do not seem to be determinant factors.

Abstract:This study employs the Bourdieusian concept of habitus to explore how users' mental dispositions are associated with both their eco-conscious use of digital technologies and online behaviours. The digital-environmental habitus, reflecting such a combination of digital technology use and environmental attitudes, is explored through an online survey of 1188 participants. Factorial analyses are used to measure the environmental orientation of digital users, their digital expertise, and the digital-environmental habitus, encompassing both awareness and behavioural dimensions. We then use a path structural model to investigate the relationship among these constructs. The results indicate that pro-environmental dispositions are associated with digital pro-environmental awareness and behaviours. The existence of digital-specific environmental awareness also enhances pro-environmental digital behaviours, emphasising the importance of educating users about the environmental impact of digital tools. While digital expertise alone does not significantly predict digital-environmental awareness, it does moderate the digital-environmental habitus's behavioural aspect, promoting behaviours mutually beneficial for users and the environment. Further research is needed to understand how benefit-oriented and eco-centric environmentalism manifests in the digital arena.

Abstract:In recent times, the landscape of financial literacy has been evolving to accommodate new trends driven by the growing prominence of digital finance. This shift has underscored the vital need for developing digital financial literacy (DFL). Scientists and researchers have increasingly recognized the crucial importance of acquiring the knowledge and skills required to navigate the complexities of digital transactions, crypto currencies, online banking, and digital investment platforms. In our study conducted in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we utilized the 2022 OECD survey questionnaire for this purpose. Employing various data collection methods, including Paper and Pencil Interviewing, Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing, and Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing, we gathered a substantial dataset comprising 1,096 fully completed questionnaires. Our primary contribution lies in the assessment of DFL scores among adults in Bosnia and Herzegovina, marking the first study of its kind in this transitional and developing nation. Furthermore, our research identifies notable personal background and socio-demographic disparities in DFL levels, rooted in factors such as age, gender, urban or rural residence, education, income and internet access, but also self-awareness of financial knowledge, owning a current account and a credit card. The survey results underscore the prevailing low levels of DFL in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with an overall score of 3.83 out of 10, highlighting the urgency for government intervention in addressing this issue.

Abstract:This paper presents the first empirical assessment of the causal relationship between social capital and health in Italy. The analysis draws on the 2000 wave of the Multipurpose Survey on Household conducted by the Italian Institute of Statistics on a representative sample of the population (n = 46,868). Our measure of social capital is the frequency of meetings with friends. Based on IV and bivariate probit estimates, we find that individuals who meet friends every day or at least two times a week are approximately 11% to 16% more likely to report good health.

Abstract:Digitalisation has great potential to reduce costs, improve access and enhance user experience. However, it could also increase inequality, with some people struggling to access and use digital services. It is important to understand who is likely to be excluded in this way and why. This can help to identify groups at particular risk of digital exclusion, inform efforts to overcome the barriers, and develop more inclusive digital services. This paper introduces a set of five linked datasets examining a range of user factors affecting the use of digital services. The datasets focus on the use of digital mobility services, but the data is useful in understanding the use of other digital services as well. The user factors considered include technology access, use and competence and attitudes towards digital technology. The datasets were the results of surveys in five European regions and countries (Germany, Italy, Barcelona Metropolitan Area, Flanders and the Netherlands). Samples were taken of the adult (age 16+) population with a total of 3,454 participants.

The impact of digitalization on the internationalization propensity of Italian family firms

Abstract:Although the role of innovation and digitalization represents critical factors to succeed in the international context, there is a lack of empirical evidence on how they impact on the international propensity of family firms. We address this gap investigating to which extent family firms adopt digitalization tools and their effect on export-orientation, as well as whether the innovation can play a boosting role for family decision makers. Based on a survey of 2,500 Italian firms carried out in 2015 by Italian Chambers of Commerce, we find that family firms face more difficulties in undertaking digital transformation decisions, since they can weaken family SEW endowment but digitalization solutions enable the international propensity of family firms, bridging the gap with their non-family counterparts. Theses results advance the current debate on risk preferences of family firms, taking into account firm conditions, in terms of digitalization and innovation equipment, under which family owners make strategic decisions.

Abstract:This article presents a comprehensive study of macroeconomic indicators that shape the trajectory of the Italian economy in the XXI century. In an effort to understand the complex interrelationships between key factors, the purpose of the study is to assess the aggregate impact of key indicators, including the poverty index, economic openness, foreign direct investment and persistent unemployment, on the Italian economic landscape. In particular, the research sheds light on the government's proactive measures to tackle the complex issue of unemployment, underlining the urgency of addressing this critical problem. The paper also examines the dynamics of Italy's balance of payments since its integration into the euro area, highlighting the country's key role in global markets. Italy's status as a major producer in sectors ranging from clothing and automobiles to renowned products such as wine and cheese underlines its importance as an attractive destination for international investment. This analysis aims to provide a detailed understanding of Italy's integration into the global economy and the consequences for its economic performance. The methodology applied in this study uses rigorous correlation and regression analysis. To address potential multicollinearity issues, three distinct models are proposed. These models offer a robust framework for economic interpretation by highlighting the complex interrelationships between different indicators. The study emphasises the key role of such indicators as public spending, economic openness, poverty index, labour force dynamics and gross fixed capital formation in shaping Italy's economic trajectory. The results of the analysis underline the importance of taking these indicators into account when developing future economic development plans for Italy. The key factors identified, including public expenditure, economic openness, the poverty index, labour force dynamics and gross fixed capital formation, have a significant impact on a country's gross domestic product (GDP) and GDP per capita. In terms of practical implementation, the study suggests that policymakers and stakeholders should prioritise these indicators when designing robust and sustainable economic strategies. Such practical implications of the research findings are necessary to guide Italy's economic development and ensure its continued leadership in a dynamic global market. The originality of this study lies in its holistic approach, which offers a comprehensive study of various macroeconomic factors. The proposed models significantly deepen the understanding of Italy's economic dynamics, making a valuable contribution to the academic discourse on this topic.
