Abstract:Nanotechnology tends to be a swiftly growing field of research that actively influences and inhibits the growth of bacteria/cancer. Noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) such as silver, copper, and gold have been used to damage bacterial and cancer growth over recent years; however, the toxicity of higher NPs concentrations remains a major issue. The copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) were therefore fabricated using a simple green chemistry approach. Biofabricated CuONPs were characterized using UV-visible, FE-SEM with EDS, HR-TEM, FT-IR, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS analysis. Formations of CuONPs have been observed by UV-visible absorbance peak at 360.74 nm. The surface morphology of the CuONPs showed the spherical structure and size (~ 68 nm). The EDS spectrum of CuONPs has proved to be the key signals of copper (Cu) and oxygen (O) components. FT-IR analysis, to validate the important functional biomolecules (O–H, C=C, C–H, C–O) are responsible for reduction and stabilization of CuONPs. The monoclinic end-centered crystalline structures of CuONPs were confirmed with XRD planes. The electrochemical oxygen states of the CuONPs have been studied using spectroscopy of the Raman and X-ray photoelectron. After successful preparation, CuONPs examined their antibacterial, anticancer, and photocatalytic activities. Green-fabricated CuONPs were promising antibacterial candidate against human pathogenic gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Aeromonas hydrophila, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. CuONPs were demonstrated the excellent anticancer activity against A549 human lung adenocarcinoma cell line. Furthermore, CuONPs exhibited photocatalytic degradation of azo dyes such as eosin yellow (EY), rhodamine 123 (Rh 123), and methylene blue (MB). Biofabricated CuONPs may therefore be an important biomedical research for the aid of bacterial/cancer diseases and photocatalytic degradation of azo dyes.

Abstract:The present study investigated the biological activity of biosynthetically prepared CuO nanoparticles from the leaves of the plant P. tomentosa. The successfully synthesized CuO NPs were found to have a strong inhibitory effect on pathogenic microorganisms as well as biofilm forming microorganisms. However, the biosynthesized CuO NPs exhibited a cytotoxic effect on HT‐22 and MCF‐7 cancer cell lines by causing the cell viability rate to decrease. It is thought that the phytocomponents contained in P. tomentosa may contribute to this effect. The results are promising for the development of new treatment strategies for microbial resistance and cancer. Copper oxide nanoparticles have attracted a great deal of attention in many fields due to their attractive physico‐chemical properties. In particular, their synthesis using an environmentally friendly method offers advantages in many applications. In the present report, copper oxide nanoparticles are produced from extracts of the plant Paulownia tomentosa by a method of biosynthesis. The synthesized CuO NPs have been characterized morphologically and structurally by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy‐dispersive X‐ray analysis, and X‐ray diffraction. Furthermore, the antimicrobial, antibiofilm and anticancer activities of the synthesized CuO NPs were evaluated. The CuO NPs were spherical and the particle size was 12.5 nm. For the tested microorganisms, CuO NPs showed a high inhibitory effect in terms of antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity. The cytotoxicity of the synthesized CuO NPs against HT‐22 and MCF‐7 showed a dose‐response activity. 50 % inhibitory concentration values were found to be 18.34 and 14.32 μg/mL of CuO NPs against the HT‐22 and MCF‐7 cancer cells, respectively. The results suggest that these nanoparticles can be used as effective antibacterial, antibiofilm and anticancer agents in the biomedical fields.

Abstract:The greatest challenge of the current generation and generations to come is antimicrobial resistance, as different pathogenic bacteria have continuously evolved to become resistant to even the most recently synthesized antibiotics such as carbapenems. Resistance to carbapenems limits the therapeutic options of MDR infections as they are the only safe and effective drugs recommended to treat such infections. This scenario has complicated treatment outcomes, even to the commonest bacterial infections. Repeated attempts to develop other approaches have been made. The most promising novel therapeutic option is the use of nanomaterials as antimicrobial agents. Thus, this study examined the efficacy of Camellia sinensis extract (CSE) and Prunus africana bark extract (PAE) green synthesized Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) against carbapenem-resistant bacteria. Furthermore, the photocatalytic and antioxidant activities of CuONPs were evaluated to determine the potential of using them in a wide range of applications. CuONPs were biosynthesized by CSE and PAE. UV vis spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the nanoparticles. CuONPs susceptibility tests were carried out by the agar well diffusion method. The photocatalytic and antioxidant activities of the CuONPs were determined by the methylene blue and DPPH free radical scavenging assays, respectively. UV vis absorbance spectra registered surface plasmon resonance peaks between 272 and 286 nm, confirming the presence of CuONPs. The XRD array had nine strong peaks at 2θ values typical of CuONPs. FTIR spectra exhibited bands associated with organic functional groups confirming capping and functionalization of the CuONPs by the phytochemicals. DLS analysis registered a net zeta potential of +12.5 mV. SEM analysis revealed that the nanoparticles were spherical and clustered with a mean diameter of 6 nm. Phytosynthesized CuONPs exhibited the highest growth suppression zones of 30 mm with MIC ranging from 30 to 125 μg/ml against MDR bacteria. Furthermore, the CuONPs achieved a methylene blue dye photocatalysis degradation efficiency of 85.5% and a free radical scavenging activity of 28.8%. PAE and CSE successfully bio-reduced copper ions to the nanoscale level with potent antimicrobial, photocatalysis, and antioxidant activities.

Abstract:BACKGROUND In order to address the challenges of food security for the ever-increasing population, the emergent of nanotechnology is an alternate technology of choice which recently accounts for the production of safer pesticides and as a substitute for conventional fertilizer. The antidrug resistance of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and build-up of chemicals in the environment has made it necessary to find alternate safe measures that are effective in diseases management. Hence, in this study, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) was green synthesized by Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. flower extract. RESULTS The characterization of CuONPs using UV - Vis spectrophotometer, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with Energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) profile, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) ascertained the presence of CuONPs which were nanorods of 28.1 nm. CuONPs significantly obstructed growth and biofilm development of Xoo by 79.65 and 79.17 % respectively. Antibacterial mechanism of CuONPs was found to be as a result of wounding cell membrane, hence, giving rise to exodus of intracellular content and generation of oxidative reactive oxygen species which invariably, inhibited Xoo respiration and growth. The toxicity study under greenhouse conditions revealed that CuONPs significantly increased growth variables and biomass of rice and reduced bacterial leaf blight. Application of CuONPs on Arabidopsis improved the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters; the ΦPSII was significantly increased by 152.05 % in comparison to control. CONCLUSION Altogether, this result suggests that CuONPs in low concentration (200.0 μg/ml) are not toxic to plants and can serve as nano-fertilizers and nano-pesticides. Abstract:In transplantation studies, often longitudinal measurements are collected for important markers prior to the actual transplantation. Using only the last available measurement as a baseline covariate in a survival model for the time to graft failure discards the whole longitudinal evolution. We propose a two-stage approach to handle this type of data sets using all available information. At the first stage, we summarize the longitudinal information with nonlinear mixed-effects model, and at the second stage, we include the Empirical Bayes estimates of the subject-specific parameters as predictors in the Cox model for the time to allograft failure. To take into account that the estimated subject-specific parameters are included in the model, we use a Monte Carlo approach and sample from the posterior distribution of the random effects given the observed data. Our proposal is exemplified on a study of the impact of renal resistance evolution on the graft survival.
An Eco-Friendly Synthesis Approach for Enhanced Photocatalytic and Antibacterial Properties of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles Using Coelastrella terrestris Algal Extract

Abstract:Background: In the current scenario, the synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) using environmentally benign methods has gained significant attention due to their facile processes, cost-effectiveness, and eco-friendly nature. Methods: In the present study, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) were synthesized using aqueous extract of Coelastrella terrestris algae as a reducing, stabilizing, and capping agent. The synthesized CuO NPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Results: XRD investigation revealed that the biosynthesized CuO NPs were nanocrystalline with high-phase purity and size in the range of 4.26 nm to 28.51 nm. FTIR spectra confirmed the existence of secondary metabolites on the surface of the synthesized CuO NPs, with characteristic Cu-O vibrations being identified around 600 cm-1, 496 cm-1, and 440 cm-1. The FE-SEM images predicted that the enhancement of the algal extract amount converted the flattened rice-like structures of CuO NPs into flower petal-like structures. Furthermore, the degradation ability of biosynthesized CuO NPs was investigated against Amido black 10B (AB10B) dye. The results displayed that the optimal degradation efficacy of AB10B dye was 94.19%, obtained at 6 pH, 50 ppm concentration of dye, and 0.05 g dosage of CuO NPs in 90 min with a pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.0296 min-1. The CuO-1 NPs synthesized through algae exhibited notable antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus with a zone of inhibition (ZOI) of 22 mm and against P. aeruginosa with a ZOI of 17 mm. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that utilizing Coelastrella terrestris algae for the synthesis of CuO NPs presents a promising solution for addressing environmental contamination.
One Pot Synthesis of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles for Efficient Antibacterial Activity

Abstract:The unique semiconductor and optical properties of copper oxides have attracted researchers for decades. However, using fruit waste materials such as peels to synthesize the nanoparticles of copper oxide (CuO NPs) has been rarely described in literature reviews. The main purpose of this part of the research was to report on the CuO NPs with the help of apple peel extract under microwave irradiation. Metal salts and extracts were irradiated at 540 W for 5 min in a microwave in a 1:2 ratio. The crystallinity of the NPs was confirmed by the XRD patterns and the crystallite size of the NPs was found to be 41.6 nm. Elemental mapping of NPs showed homogeneous distributions of Cu and O. The NPs were found to contain Cu and O by EDX and XPS analysis. In a test involving two human pathogenic microbes, NPs showed antibacterial activity and the results revealed that the zone of inhibition grew significantly with respect to the concentration of CuO NPs. In a biofilm, more specifically, NPs at 25.0 μg/mL reduced mean thickness and biomass values of S. aureus and E. coli biofilms by >85.0 and 65.0%, respectively, with respect to untreated controls. In addition, environmentally benign materials offer a number of benefits for pharmaceuticals and other biomedical applications as they are eco-friendly and compatible.

Abstract:In response to growing concerns regarding the environmental impact of traditional chemical synthesis methods, this study delves into the phytoconstituents-based green synthesis of Copper Oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) as a promising alternative. The research aims to create CuO NPs using eco-friendly methods with Erythrina variegata while studying their anticancer, antibacterial, and photocatalytic properties. CuO NPs' structural and optical properties were comprehensively analyzed using UV–vis, FTIR, XRD, DLS, SEM, and HRTEM, with elemental mapping via EDAX. The cytotoxicity assays conducted on cervical cancer HeLa cells and HEK293 noncancerous cells. The band gap of the CuO NPs was determined to be 3.781 eV, with a crystal size of 17.15 nm and a zeta potential of -23.1 mV. Remarkably, the synthesized nanoparticles exhibited spherical morphology and demonstrated significant cytotoxicity against HeLa cells with an IC50 value of 48±5 μg/mL, while displaying lower toxicity towards HEK293 cells. Additionally, CuO NPs demonstrated dose-dependent anticancer potentials, inhibiting cell migration, and colony formation, and inducing apoptosis in HeLa cells. Moreover, the antibacterial activity of CuO NPs against S. aureus and E. coli paralleled that of the standard antibiotic streptomycin. Furthermore, the study evaluated the photocatalytic capability of developed CuO NPs, indicating significant photocatalytic activity of 91.12% degradation at 180 minutes of UV irradiation against the organic dye methylene blue, demonstrating their efficacy in breaking down organic pollutants in the environment. The study emphasizes eco-friendly CuO NP synthesis, promising significant impacts on energy, the environment, and medicine through sustainable approaches.

Abstract:Abstract Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) were synthesized using ayurvedic medicine septilin. The septilin-mediated CuO NPs were characterized using UV–Vis, fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The average particle size of CuO NPs was 8 nm as evident from TEM. Minimum inhibitory concentration of CuO NPs against Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Candida albicans was found in the range of 1–2.5 mg·mL −1 . CuO NPs dose-dependently decreased the biofilm formation from 0.0315 to 2 mg·mL −1 , at the highest dose of 2 mg·mL −1 of CuO NPs; 92.91%, 79.84%, and 71.57% decrease in biofilm was observed for P. aeruginosa , MRSA, and C. albicans , respectively. Down-regulation of biofilm upon treatment with nanoparticles (NPs) was also observed by SEM analysis. SEM analysis also showed the change in morphological structure, and deformities in bacterial and fungal cells upon treatment of NPs. Furthermore, the anticancer efficacy of NPs was assessed using colon cancer (HCT-116). The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay clearly showed the anticancer potential of NPs, as the concentration of CuO NPs increased, the number of viable cells decreased. The produced CuO NPs have promise for future investigations in many biological and therapeutic domains, including the treatment of microbial biofilm infections, as well as the inhibition of cancer cell growth.

Abstract:Clinically relevant antibiotic-resistant bacteria are appeared to be hard or impossible to treat using conventional antibiotics. In this context, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) with latent and flexible character showed remarkable antimicrobial activity against pathogenic Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Minimum inhibitory concentration (<1 mcg/ml) and minimum bactericidal concentration (∼3 mcg/ml) for synthesized CuO NPs were predicted, comparable to the available antipseudomonal antibiotics. Green synthesis of CuO NPs was executed using capsular polymeric substance (CPS) extracted from a marine Bacillus altitudinis SORB11.The compound CPS containing mannose, glucose and galactose was compact and agglomerated in nature with a molecular weight of 1.247 × 103 Da. Crude CPS was effectively used as a coating and stabilizing agent for the synthesis of CuO NPs. The synthesized uniform, spherical CuO NPs showed a face-centered cubic cuprous oxide with a cuprite structure that appeared in crystalline planes. This present study was demonstrated successfully synthesized CuO NPs using an eco-friendly synthesis technique and ultimately, showed a significant level of antibacterial activity against pathogenic Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Abstract:Abstract The green methodologies of nanoparticles with plant extracts have received an increase of interest. Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) have been utilized in a many of applications in the last few decades. The current study presents the synthesis of CuO NPs with aqueous extract of Morinda citrifolia as a stabilizing agent. The leaf extract of Morinda citrifolia was mixed with a solution of copper sulphate (CuSO 4 ·5H 2 O) and sodium hydroxide as a catalyst. UV–visible spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, and EDAX analysis were performed to study the synthesized CuO NPs. Particle size distribution of the synthesized CuO NPs have been measured with dynamic light scattering. The CuO NPs synthesized were highly stable, sphere-like, and have size of particles from 20 to 50 nm. Furthermore, as-formed CuO NPs shown strong antibacterial activity against the Gram-positive bacteria ( Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus ), and Gram-negative bacteria ( Escherichia coli ). CuO NPs revealed a similar trend was analysed for antifungal activity. The zone of inhibition for the fungi evaluated for Aspergillus flavus (13.0 ± 1.1), Aspergillus niger (14.3 ± 0.7), and Penicillium frequentans (16.8 ± 1.4). According to the results of this investigation, green synthesized CuO NPs with Morinda citrifolia leaf extract may be used in biomedicine as a replacement agent for biological applications.

Abstract:In the present work, copper oxide (CuO NPs) was synthesized by an eco-friendly, simple, low-cost, and economical synthesis method using Ephedra Alata aqueous plant extract as a reducing and capping agent. The biosynthesized CuO-NPs were compared with chemically obtained CuO-NPs to investigate the effect of the preparation method on the structural, optical, morphological, antibacterial, antifungal, and photocatalytic properties under solar irradiation. The CuO NPs were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-VIS spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) analysis, and field emission scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (FESEM-EDX). The photocatalytic activities of biosynthetic CuO-NPs and chemically prepared CuO-NPs were studied using methylene blue upon exposure to solar irradiation. The results showed that the biosynthesized CuO photocatalyst was more efficient than the chemically synthesized CuO-NPs for Methylene Blue (MB) degradation under solar irradiation, with MB degradation rates of 93.4% and 80.2%, respectively. In addition, antibacterial and antifungal activities were evaluated. The disk diffusion technique was used to test the biosynthesized CuO-NPs against gram-negative bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis , as well as C. Albicans and S. cerevisiae . The biosynthesized CuO-NPs showed efficient antibacterial and antifungal activity. The obtained results revealed that the biosynthesized CuO-NPs can play a vital role in the destruction of pathogenic bacteria, the degradation of dyes, and the activity of antifungal agents in the bioremediation of industrial and domestic waste.
Alpinia officinarum mediated copper oxide nanoparticles: synthesis and its antifungal activity against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides

Abstract:Green synthesis offers an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative for the synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs). In this study, the synthesis of CuO NPs was optimized by using copper sulfate (CuSO4) and the aqueous extract of Alpinia officinarum and its antifungal activity were investigated. The synthesized CuO NPs were characterized by UV–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared radiation spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the optimized conditions for the synthesis of CuO NPs were 1:2 ratio of extract and CuSO4 solution, pH 7, and 30 °C. The characteristic UV–vis peak of A. officinarum synthesized CuO NPs was at 264 nm. The synthesized CuO NPs had high crystallinity and purity and were spherical in morphology with the mean size of 46.40 nm. The synthesized CuO NPs reduced the fungal growth of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in a dose-dependent manner. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of the CuO NPs were 125 μg·mL−1 and 500 μg·mL−1, respectively. The antifungal activity of CuO NPs may be attributed to its ability to deform the structure of fungal hyphae, induce excessive reactive oxygen species accumulation and lipid peroxidation in fungi, disrupt the mycelium cell membrane, and result cellular leakage.

Biocompatible Copper Oxide Nanoparticle Composites from Cellulose and Chitosan: Facile Synthesis, Unique Structure, and Antimicrobial Activity

Abstract:Copper in various forms has been known to have bactericidal activity. Challenges to its application include preventing mobilization of the copper, to both extend activity and avoid toxicity, and bioincompatibility of many candidate substrates for copper immobilization. Using a simple ionic liquid, butylmethylimmidazolium chloride as the solvent, we developed a facile and green method to synthesize biocompatible composites containing copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) from cellulose (CEL) and chitosan (CS) or CEL and keratin (KER). Spectroscopy and imaging results indicate that CEL, CS, and KER remained chemically intact and were homogeneously distributed in the composites with CuONPs with size of 22 ± 1 nm. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) suggests that some 25% of the EPR-detectable Cu(II) is present as a monomeric species, chemically anchored to the substrate by two or more nitrogen atoms, and, further, adopts a unique spatially oriented conformation when incorporated into the [CEL + CS] composite but not in the [CEL + KER] composite. The remaining 75% of EPR-detectable Cu(II) exhibited extensive spin-spin interactions, consistent with Cu(II) aggregates and Cu(II) on the surface of CuONPs. At higher levels of added copper (>59 nmol/mg), the additional copper was EPR-silent, suggesting an additional phase in larger CuONPs, in which S > 0 spin states are either thermally inaccessible or very fast-relaxing. These data suggest that Cu(II) initially binds substrate via nitrogen atoms, from which CuONPs develop through aggregation of copper. The composites exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity against a wide range of bacteria and fungi, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus; vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus; and highly resistant Escherichia coli, Streptococcus agalactiae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, and Candida albicans. Expectedly, the antibacterial activity was found to be correlated with the CuONPs content in the composites. More importantly, at CuONP concentration of 35 nmol/mg or lower, bactericidal activity of the composite was complemented by its biocompatibility with human fibroblasts.
Biogenic synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles using mushroom fungus Cordyceps militaris: Characterization and mechanistic insights of therapeutic investigation

Abstract:The present research demonstrates the Cordyceps militaris (a medicinal mushroom) mediated fabrication of zinc oxide nanoparticles (Cor-ZnONPs) and its therapeutic investigation. The biosynthesized Cor-ZnONPs were characterized by UV–Visible spectroscopy, FT-IR, XRD, SEM with EDX, HRTEM, particle size, and zeta potential analysis and evaluated for their antidiabetic, antioxidant, and antibacterial potential by in-vitro methods. The nanoparticles showed SPR peak at 354 nm. FT-IR analysis exhibited a sharp peak at 432.05 cm−1, demonstrating the distinctive Zn–O bond. Cor-ZnONPs had an average particle size of 1.83 nm with a polydispersity index of 0.29 and were crystalline as obtained from XRD analysis. Zeta potential of −6.42 mV indicates the moderate stability of nanoparticles. EDX analysis confirmed the presence of Zinc and Oxygen. Cor-ZnONPs expressed a 70–90% survival rate in brine shrimp lethality assay with 10–100 ppm concentrations and exhibited potent α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory effect with an IC50 of 46.29 ± 0.49 and 47.21 ± 0.19 μg/mL, respectively. Cor-ZnONPs showed moderate radical potency with DPPH, ABTS, hydroxyl radical, nitric oxide, and superoxide radical scavenging assays. Cor-ZnONPs revealed the highest antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, followed by Shigella flexneri, Proteus vulgaris, and Rhodococcus equi. Moreover, a very low concentration of Cor-ZnONPs was required to inhibit the growth of studied bacterial strains. This study provides an informational insight into the Cordyceps militaris mediated synthesis of ZnONPs, and their antidiabetic, antioxidant, and antibacterial potential. Biosynthesized Cor-ZnONPs indicate a new application of nanoparticles in the development of therapeutic drugs.

Abstract:Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) have piqued the interest of agricultural researchers due to their potential application as fungicides, insecticides, and fertilizers. The Serratia sp. ZTB29 strain, which has the NCBI accession number MK773873, was a novel isolate used in this investigation that produced CuO-NPs. This strain can survive concentrations of copper as high as 22.5 mM and can also remove copper by synthesizing pure CuO-NPs. UV-VIS spectroscopy, DLS, Zeta potential, FTIR, TEM, and XRD techniques were used to investigate the pure form of CuO-NPs. The synthesized CuO-NPs were crystalline in nature (average size of 22 nm) with a monoclinic phase according to the XRD pattern. CuO-NPs were found to be polydisperse, spherical, and agglomeration-free. According to TEM and DLS inspection, they ranged in size from 20 to 40 nm, with a typical particle size of 28 nm. CuO-NPs were extremely stable, as demonstrated by their zeta potential of −15.4 mV. The ester (C=O), carboxyl (C=O), amine (NH), thiol (S-H), hydroxyl (OH), alkyne (C-H), and aromatic amine (C-N) groups from bacterial secretion were primarily responsible for reduction and stabilization of CuO-NPs revealed in an FTIR analysis. CuO-NPs at concentrations of 50 μg mL −1 and 200 μg mL −1 displayed antibacterial and antifungal activity against the plant pathogenic bacteria Xanthomonas sp. and pathogenic fungus Alternaria sp., respectively. The results of this investigation support the claims that CuO-NPs can be used as an efficient antimicrobial agent and nano-fertilizer, since, compared to the control and higher concentrations of CuO-NPs (100 mg L −1 ) considerably improved the growth characteristics of maize plants.

Abstract:The green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) has garnered significant interest owing to their eco-friendly and sustainable approach, which utilizes natural resources as both reducing and stabilizing factors. This method yields NPs with desirable properties suitable for various applications in diverse areas. Among different NPs, metal oxide NPs such as copper oxide (CuO) NPs have drawn considerable interest owing to their excellent properties and applications in diverse fields such as nanomedicine and biomedicine. Various methods can synthesize CuO NPs, including physical, chemical, and biological approaches. Physicochemical methods are known to be highly toxic, energy-intensive, and expensive, while biological synthesis offers an eco-friendly, cost-effective, simple, and reliable method of producing CuO NPs. This review discusses the potential utilizations of CuO NPs synthesized using a greener approach in various fields, including antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammation, anticancer, anti-oxidant, drug delivery, wound healing, biosensor, environmental remediation, photodegradation, nano fertilizers, textile industry, nanofluid, energy storage, and so on. The eco-friendly and sustainable nature of the synthesis process, coupled with the versatile applications of CuO NPs, underscores the importance of green synthesis approaches in advancing nanotechnology for a sustainable future.
