Abstract:The permeability characteristics of overburden soil have a significant effect on radon exhalation in uranium tailings pond. To understand this change, the effects of dry density, particle size range, and moisture content on the gas permeability and radon exhalation were studied by correlation analysis method. According to the mechanism of radon generation, the permeability characteristics of overburden, and the weather conditions, a theoretical model of radon exhalation was constructed and an experimental setup was designed. A series of tests on different properties of overburden soil were conducted by uranium tailings permeameter, and the radon exhalation rate of corresponding overburden surface was measured by local static method. Results show that the permeability of overburden decreased, which led to the decrease of radon exhalation: (1) At the same moisture content, with the increase of dry density, both the gas permeability and radon exhalation rate decrease. (2) At the same moisture content, with the increase of the particle size range, both the gas permeability and radon exhalation rate increase. (3) At the same dry density, with the increase of moisture content, the gas permeability decreases, while the radon exhalation rate increases slightly at first and then decreases.

Abstract:On-line continuous monitoring of radon concentration in water is of great significance for its environmental application as a radioactive tracer, for example, as a potential precursor for earthquake forecast and volcanic eruption. To realize on-line continuous measurement on radon in complex water body, a compact measurement system mainly consisted of a simple degassing device and an electrostatic radon monitor is newly developed. The sensitivity of the measurement system is 73 +/- 5 cph/(Bq/L), and the detection limit is 0.04 Bq/L with a 60-min cycle at 25 ?C water temperature. Intercomparison measurements with RAD H2O were performed both in lab-oratory condition and in field, and consistent results within the error range were achieved. To test the developed measurement system, a continuous monitoring of radon concentration in water in the drainage tunnel of Mount Jinping was performed for 3 months. The arithmetic mean of radon concentration in water is 0.34 +/- 0.09 Bq/L, varying in the range of 0.04-0.60 Bq/L during the period. Several rapid decreases of radon concentration in water were observed, which might be attributed to the increase of rainwater mixing in the drainage tunnel caused by heavy rainfall. The stability of long-term operation of the system enables it to be widely used in the field of radon in water as a tracer.

Abstract:In order to find out radon reduction performance of the overburden layer on uranium mill tailings (UMTs) pond beach surface after rainfall, the rainfall simulation experiment of the overburden layer was carried out with the self-developed equipment. Based on the radon migration model of the overburden layer on the UMTs pond beach surface, the change rule of radon exhalation in four types of compactness of the overburden layer within 120 hours after rainfall was studied, and the corresponding moisture content was also analyzed. The results show that the radon concentration in the overburden layer of UMTs increases nonlinearly; the dynamic change in moisture content of the overburden layer on the beach surface leads to the unsteady radon exhalation. The variation of radon exhalation shows three stages: increase, linear decrease, and stability tendency. After rainfall, radon exhalation rate increases due to water vapor and there is free radon seepage in pores. With the decrease of free radon production rate, radon exhalation rate gradually decreases until it reaches stability again. When the thickness of the overburden layer reduces, the porosity decreases with the increase in compactness of the overburden layer. While the decrease in radon reduction is more obvious, the less time it takes for radon exhalation to vary from unstable to stable overburden after rainfall.

Abstract:The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory is proposed to determine neutrino mass hierarchy using a 20 ktonne liquid scintillator detector. Strict radio-purity requirements have been put forward for all the components of the detector. According to the MC simulation results, the radon dissolved in the water Cherenkov detector should be below 200 mBq/m<math>3</math>. Radium, the progenitor of radon, should also be taken seriously into account. In order to measure the radium concentration in water, a radium measurement system, which consists of a radium extraction system, a radon emanation chamber and a radon concentration measurement system, has been developed. In this paper, the updated radon concentration in gas measurement system with a one-day-measurement sensitivity of <math>∼</math>5 mBq/m<math>3</math>, the detail of the development of the radium concentration in water measurement system with a sensitivity of <math>∼</math>23 mBq/m<math>3</math> as well as the measurement results of Daya Bay water samples will be presented.
Evaluation of accurate measurement methods for radon exhalation rate with advection effect and application in field

Abstract:In decommissioning of a uranium tailings pond, radon exhalation rates on a beach surface should meet regulatory standards. Accurate measurements of the radon exhalation rate are demanded. However, current studies fail to consider the impact of advection under temperature variations or pressure gradients caused by gas movement on measurements using an accumulation chamber. Two proposed methods were therefore evaluated to accurately measure radon exhalation rates on the loose medium surface under advective conditions. Repeated experiments were conducted on a laboratory experimental platform filled with uranium tailings sand under advective flow rates of 0.03 and 0.3 L/min to validate the stability and reliability. Deviations between measured and true values were 0.1-6.1 % and 6.3-29.2 % for the two methods, respectively. Subsequently, numerical simulation was used to analyze defects of traditional methods and mechanisms of the new methods. In a field study, all methods were compared, and a predictive map of radon exhalation rates was created using interpolated data from 20 random sites using the new method. Results from the proposed methods, compared with traditional ones, were closer to true values under advective conditions, and accurate assessment of beach surface treatment was expected.

Abstract:To obtain a radon source that is easy to access natural radium-bearing raw material and does not require the approval of relevant departments, the tubular flow-through radon source using radium-bearing ore as the radon-generating material was designed. Based on the theories of radon diffusion-convection migration in porous media, the simplified calculation formula and numerical calculation models of radon activity concentration at the outlet of the tubular flow-through radon source were established, and the radon release rules of the tubular flow-through radon source were studied using a combination of simplified calculation formulas, numerical simulations, and experiments, respectively. The results show that (1) the radon activity concentration at the outlet of the tubular flow-through radon source was dominated by mass (or the volume) of the natural radium-bearing raw material, free radon production rate, and gas flow rate. (2) When the range of radon activity concentration at the outlet is 260–1308 Bq m-3, the relative deviation of the three methods is less than 2.62%. (3) The simplified calculation formula and numerical simulation method proposed in this paper can provide a reference for the design and control of the radon activity concentration of a tubular flow-through radon source.

Abstract:Radon can move freely through air and water. Water radon measurement is a method of earthquake monitoring and water radon can be used as an environmental tracer to follow transit pathways. A novel bubbling device was developed for continuous detection of waterborne radon levels. Equilibrium between water and gas-phase radon concentrations in the gas path of this device is attained through circulation and bubbling. Monitoring gas radon allows dynamic tracking of water radon concentration. At the temperature of 22.6 °C, the device exhibits a sensitivity of 0.0016 CPM/Bq/m 3 and detects concentrations within the range of 0.96–180,000 Bq/m 3 .

Abstract:Considering the significant issue of radon contamination in deep uranium mining settings, an investigation was conducted on the mechanical-environmental coupling effects of various joint roughness coefficients (JRC), temperature ( T ), pressure differential (Δ P ), water saturation degree ( K w ), and ventilation intensity ( λ v ) on the surface radon exhalation of quasi-uranium ore samples. This was accomplished through the utilization of a self-constructed rock radon coupling exhalation experimental device and quasi-uranium ore sample. The findings indicate that the radon concentration in the sample increases in a linear fashion with the duration of radon collection, irrespective of the sample's temperature. Furthermore, the radon exhalation capacity of the sample exhibits an initial rise followed by a decline as the degree of water saturation increases. As the sample pressure differential increases, the radon exhalation capacity of the sample exhibits a monotonically decreasing pattern. The concentration of accumulated radon is inversely associated with the intensity of ventilation. The relationship between the radon exhalation ability of the sample and the JRC is generally manifested in the form of "first decreasing and then increasing", and the maximum and minimum values of the radon exhalation ability occur in the cases of JRC = 16–18 and JRC = 6–8, respectively. The results of this study can provide scientific basis for the design of ventilation and radon control in future deep uranium mines.

Abstract:The knowledge of the soil radon levels is important for the planning and construction of new buildings in order to estimate the radon risk and to classify the ground for construction purposes. A simple device was developed to simulate the vertical migration of radon in soil. The device simulates the vertical migration of radon in two different cases. The first case: simulates radon vertical migration in soil in a natural environment. The top of the device is open, while the around and bottom are sealed. The second case: simulates the vertical migration of radon in soil under the surface of a concrete floor. The device is sealed all around, including the top and bottom. A total of two sets of experiments were conducted in this study, each set of experiments simulated the migration of radon under two different cases. According to the research results, the potential radon concentration under the concrete floor is much higher than the natural potential radon concentration. Therefore, this factor must be fully considered when selecting the building materials and designing radon protection materials.

Abstract:Radon-in-water is an important tracer in hydrology, oceanography and geology, where a demand for fast response and long-term continuous measurement of radon-in-water concentration on-site is necessary. In this paper, an on-site radon-in-water measurement system based on a degassing membrane, an electrostatic radon monitor and a water temperature sensor is presented, and calibration experiment is carried out. The relative degassing efficiency of the degassing membrane was studied using self-made radon-in-water standard, which gives the result of (97.1 +/- 7.3) %. The sensitivity of the measurement system is (3730 +/- 190) cph/(Bq/L), and the lower limit of detection is 0.005 Bq/L, with 10 min cycle at 25 degrees C water temperature. The response time of the measurement system is about 26 min, which is independent of the water flowrate within the range of 0.5-2.5 L/min. Using this measurement system, field measurements were carried out on tap water and deep well water. And the measurement system has been successfully used in the continuous monitoring of radon-in-water concentration at a seismic station in Beijing.
Study on the influence of water saturation on radon exhalation rates of rocks

Abstract:The radon exhalation characteristics of rocks will change significantly during water saturation treatment, and radon, as an important tracer, is of great significance in predicting rock activities. In this paper, the radon exhalation characteristics of rocks after saturated with different water contents were studied by centrifugal test, radon measurement test and other indoor tests. The results show that the radon exhalation rate of rocks shows a rising and then decreasing trend with the increase of rock water saturation. The radon precipitation rate peaked at 0.7 Sw ∼ 0.8 Sw, and the high water saturation had an obvious inhibiting effect on the radon exhalation rate of rocks. The research results are of great significance in predicting the rock-water-based geological processes.

Abstract:Waste from resource extraction industries contains uranium and thorium decay chain radionuclides. One important radiological impact of these wastes is the release of radon into the atmosphere. Therefore, the prediction/evaluation of radon flux and the effectiveness of different covers are the major elements in radiation protection, long-term safety aspects, and the modeling of radon release into the environment for a final assessment of radiological impacts and required remediation actions. A measurement system has been designed based on the transient-diffusion method to evaluate radon exhalation by the short-time accumulation technique. The validity of the laboratory model to quickly estimate the radon release from soils, the diffusion coefficient, and the effect of covers was investigated. From the results obtained from the experimental model, it was observed that after a 0.5-m(1-m) cover layer, the radon flux reduction factor increases from 1.3(2.1) for sand to about 2(3) for clay. The results show that the effectiveness of the cover layer studied is 3, which is similar to theoretical and experimental results in uranium tailings ponds.

Abstract:Measurements of radon exhalation rate using traditional methods can be affected by back-diffusion or differential pressure in the accumulation chamber, resulting in deviations between the measured and the true values. To obtain an accurate radon exhalation rate for evaluation of radon-risk regions, two novel approaches of measurements based on traditional methods were proposed. Repeated experiments were implemented on a self-designed stainless cylindrical vessel filled with uranium tailings sand. The measured radon exhalation rates on average were 0.51 ± 0.02 and 0.52 ± 0.02 Bq m −2 s −1 for the two proposed methods, with 0.02% and 0.04%, respectively, deviations from the theoretical value. In addition, numerical techniques were employed to interpret the defects of traditional methods and mechanisms of proposed approaches to measure accurate values. Two novel approaches have significantly reduced the impact of back diffusion and differential pressure inside the chamber and consumed less time.

Abstract:To monitor low-level radioxenon isotopes activity concentrations in the bulk gases, a radioxenon sampling, separation and measurement system has been developed. The xenon enrichment factor of this system is more than 105 after the separation of impurities, including N2, O2, CO2and H2O, as well as radon and its progenies, such as 214Pb and 214Bi. Since radon and its progenies interfere with radioxenon measurement, they have to be removed before radioxenon counting. To separate radon from xenon, different dynamic adsorption coefficients of xenon and radon are used to design small radon removal trap to retain radon after eluting xenon, and the ratio between radon and xenon dynamic adsorption coefficient gives the adsorbent weight relationship between the xenon adsorption trap and its related radon removal trap. To test the effectiveness of radon removal, the relative measuring method is used by measuring γ-rays energies of radon progenies in canister filling with either the measuring sample prepared by the system or the original gas. The results show that the radon removal coefficient and the stable xenon recovery, which are two important parameters in the radioxenon system, are at the order of 10-6 and >70% respectively. These meet the specifications proposed by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization.

Abstract:Radon exhaled from rocks, building materials, and soil can be harmful to human health, so it is necessary to measure radon and its exhalation rate. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to simulate radon exhalation from different medium surface by using a solid Rn-222 source, and the radon exhalation rate can be adjusted by replacing radon accumulation chambers with different bottom areas. Firstly, an experiment was done to determine the activity of the Rn-222 source, and then the theoretical radon exhalation rate can be quickly calculated from the relationship between the radon source activity and the bottom area of the radon accumulation chamber. Three sets of comparative experiments were conducted using two radon accumulation chambers with different volumes, respectively. Comparing the average values obtained from the experiments with the calculated theoretical values, it can be obtained that the differences corresponding to the two radon accumulation chambers between the theoretical radon exhalation rates and the experimentally average values are all within 6%. Without replacing the radon source, the radon exhalation rate is inversely varies with the bottom area of the chamber. Therefore, the correctness of adjusting the radon exhalation rate by replacing radon accumulation chambers with different bottom areas to simulate radon exhalation from different media surfaces is verified. This method can be used to calibrate the radon exhalation measuring instruments.

Abstract:Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD), including both land-based fresh groundwater that enters the ocean from coastal aquifers as well as recirculated seawater that is continuously recharged and discharged on the seabed, has been considered as an important component of the global water and biogenic element (e.g., nitrogen, phosphorus, silicon and carbon) sources and a significant pathway for material exchange at the land-sea interface of coastal ecosystems. Some researchers reported that SGD associated nutrient additions to coastal waters have caused unwanted ecological issues, including red tides, coastal acidification and hypoxia. Natural radon isotope ( 222 Rn, t 1/2 = 3.8 d ) is an excellent tracer for studying SGD and other oceanographic processes including air-sea gas exchange, sediment-water diffusion, and earthquake prediction. However, the conventional radon measurement methods suffer many technical disadvantages. We consequently developed a convenient submersible radon determination approach ("OUC-Rn") using a commercial pulsed ionization chamber (PIC) radon sensor and gas extraction membrane module to produce high precision and high resolution observations. We demonstrate the radon degassing efficiency of the membrane contactor is comparable to the shower-head type air-water exchanger but is independent of operating position. The radon measurement efficiency of the PIC is 2-fold higher than the RAD7 detector and is far less influenced by moisture. We successfully deployed the system in 2.5 meters water depth over a 100 hours period in an anthropogenic influenced bay. Based on our high temporal resolution observations, the SGD flux was estimated to be 0-43.0 cm/d (mean: 25.4 ± 14.5 cm/d). The SGD fluxes pattern plotted together with the tidal variations revealed that tidal pumping may be the main force driving seawater recirculation into aquifers and thus affecting nutrient, carbon and other dissolved matters dynamics in coastal regions.

Abstract:With the gradual increase of the coal mining depth, the mixing of multiple water sources intensifies and the activity of radium and radon in groundwater increases. Identifying the source of mine water inrush by using radium and radon isotopes is a new choice. In this paper, the mathematical statistics method, radioactive isotope decay theory, the mass conservation principle, and the numerical simulation method are used to analyze the influence of total dissolved solids (TDS), pH, and the hydrochemical ion content in groundwater on the isotope activity of radium, radon, uranium, thorium, and lead. The activity of thorium and lead is lower than the detection limit of the instrument, and the influence of coal mining activities on it is small. The simulation of the radium-radon mass balance in groundwater shows that the greater the adsorption coefficient (k) of solid particles in groundwater is, the more obvious the adsorption effect and the greater the influence on the radium-radon activity balance are. The radium-radon dating method is used to calculate the groundwater age. Results show that the groundwater age in the closed pit coal mining area is generally older than that in the mining coal mining area. Combined with the 222Rn, 226Ra, and 234U radioactive isotopes and temperature, a mixing water source identification model of limestone in the coal seam floor is constructed. The model shows that the radium activity and temperature of the groundwater are inversely proportional to the mixing ratio of the Permian sandstone water. From the closed pit coal mining area to the mining coal mining area, the radium radon activity of the groundwater increases gradually, the groundwater age decreases significantly, the water cycle is accelerated, the mixing ratio of the Permian sandstone water decreases gradually, the mixing ratio of the Ordovician limestone water increases gradually, and the risk of coal mine water inrush increases. The research results prove the feasibility of the new method for accurately discriminating the mixing water sources in coal mine areas, which is of great significance to the improvement of the theory of coal mine water disaster prevention and control.

Abstract:Compacted soil layers effectively prevent the migration of radon gas from uranium tailings impoundments to the nearby environment. However, surface damage caused by wet and dry cycles (WDCs) weakens this phenomenon.In order to study the effect of crack network on radon exhalation under WDCs, a homemade uranium tailing pond model was developed to carry out radon exhalation tests under five WDCs. Based on image processing and morphological methods, the area, length, mean width and fractal dimension of the drying cracks were quantitatively analyzed, and multiple linear regression was used to establish the relationship between the geometric characteristics of the cracks and the radon exhalation rate under multiple WDCs. The results suggested that the radon release rate and crack network of the uranium tailings pond gradually stabilized as the water content decreased, following rapid development in a single WDC process. The radon release rate increased continuously after each cycle, with a cumulative increase of 25.9% over 5 cycles. The radon release rate and average crack width remained consistent in size, and a binary linear regression considering width and fractal dimension could explain the changes in radon release rate after multiple WDCs.
