Abstract:Ultracompact directional optical nanoantennas are rapidly gaining popularity yet still challenging tasks to construct at the nanoscale. Here, we experimentally demonstrate unidirectional emission from a fluorescent nanodiamond coupled with a single gold nanorod. Different configurations of the assembled hybrid nanostructures were realized via step-by-step atomic force microscope nanomanipulation. The emission patterns can be controlled by adjusting the configurations, i.e., the gold nanorod orientation and separation with respect to the nanodiamond. Numerical simulation results reveal that the unidirectional emission can be ascribed to the interference between the electromagnetic fields produced by the dipole-like source and the out-of-phase dipole induced in the gold nanorod. The proposed hybrid nanostructures remarkably exhibit highly unidirectional emission even when the emitter is positioned up to 50nm away from the nanorod antenna and present a broad working spectral bandwidth of approximate to 200nm. The distinct features of this hybrid structure suggest potential applications for novel nanoscale light sources, sensing, and quantum information.

Abstract:Ultrathin plasmonic nanostructures offer an unparalleled opportunity for the study of light–matter interactions at the nanoscale and realization of compact nanophotonic devices. In this study, we introduce an ultrathin gold nanoribbon array and demonstrate an electric approach to actively tuning its plasmonic resonance, which leveraging the extreme light confinement capability in the ultrathin plasmonic nanostructure and a robust nanoscale electro-optical effect in indium tin oxide. Optimizing the design (to a total thickness as small as 12 nm for a 2-nm-thick gold nanoribbon array), we numerically demonstrate a spectral shift in the plasmonic resonance up to 36 nm along with an approximately 16% change in the transmission at a gate voltage below 1.7 V at the wavelength of 1.47 μm. This work presents progress towards electric tuning of plasmonic resonances in ultrathin metallic nanostructures for various applications including surface-enhanced spectroscopy, spontaneous emission enhancement, and optical modulation.

Abstract:V-shaped gold nanoantennas are the functional components of plasmonic metasurfaces, which are capable of manipulating light in unprecedented ways. Designing a metasurface requires the custom arrangement of individual antennas with controlled shape and orientation. Here, we show how highly crystalline gold nanorods in solution can be bent, one-by-one, into a V-shaped geometry and printed to the surface of a solid support through a combination of plasmonic heating and optical force. Significantly, we demonstrate that both the bending angle and the orientation of each rod-antenna can be adjusted independent from each other by tuning the laser intensity and polarization. This approach is applicable for the patterning of V-shaped plasmonic antennas on almost any substrate, which holds great potential for the fabrication of ultrathin optical components and devices.

Abstract:Plasmon lasers can support ultrasmall mode confinement and ultrafast dynamics with device feature sizes below the diffraction limit. At present in the single visible light frequency, the optical gain method of constraint SPP on metal nanowires structure reported less. We design the gold nanowire array structure, consisting of PMMA and R6G dye molecules as gain, by 488nm pump in the middle of the nanowires position for wide range of light, use symmetry broken overcome that momentum does not match the photonic and SPP energy conversion. Theoretical analysis shows that dyes provide coherent optical feedback, resulting in nanowires face will observe laser properties of surface plasmons. Feature analysis: the incident light and pump joint strength is greater than the sum of strength which is the incident light, pump respectively. Under the effect of dye molecules gain effective, length of SPP transmission can increase 1µm. The results achieved in a single optical frequency of stimulated radiation, application of dye optical gain can achieve continuous gain effect. This is for the future development of plasma amplifier and the wavelength laser.

Tunable plasmons in atomically thin gold nanodisks

Abstract:The ability to modulate light at high speeds is of paramount importance for telecommunications, information processing, and medical imaging technologies. This has stimulated intense efforts to master optoelectronic switching at visible and near-infrared frequencies, although coping with current computer speeds in integrated architectures still remains a major challenge. As a partial success, midinfrared light modulation has been recently achieved through gating patterned graphene. Here we show that atomically thin noble metal nanoislands can extend optical modulation to the visible and near-infrared spectral range. We find plasmons in thin metal nanodisks to produce similar absorption cross-sections as spherical particles of the same diameter. Using realistic levels of electrical doping, plasmons are shifted by about half their width, thus leading to a factor-of-two change in light absorption. These results, which we substantiate on microscopic quantum theory of the optical response, hold great potential for the development of electrical visible and near-infrared light modulation in integrable, nanoscale devices.

Plasmonic crystals for ultrafast nanophotonics: Optical switching of surface plasmon polaritons

Abstract:We demonstrate that the dispersion of surface plasmon polaritons in a periodically perforated gold film can be efficiently manipulated by femtosecond laser pulses with the wavelengths far from the intrinsic resonances of gold. Using a time- and frequency- resolved pump-probe technique we observe shifting of the plasmon polariton resonances with response times from 200 to 800 fs depending on the probe photon energy, through which we obtain comprehensive insight into the electron dynamics in gold. We show that Wood anomalies in the optical spectra provide pronounced resonances in differential transmission and reflection with magnitudes up to 3% for moderate pump fluences of 0.5 mJ/cm^2.

Abstract:Metal nanoparticles (NPs) colloids provide a unique combination of optical, magnetic, electronic, and thermal properties, finding applications in various fields ranging from optoelectronics to cancer therapy. The chemical synthesis of such NPs has been refined to a high degree of control of crystallinity, shape, and size distribution. Among them, gold NPs are of particular interest because they host plasmonic resonances that enhance their interactions with light. Their size and shape impose the resonance wavelengths, which, depending on the application, must be tunable. For this, the synthesis processes are generally adapted on a case-by-case basis, preventing the development of a generic recipe that can cover a wide range of applications. We present here a different approach and propose to modify the size distribution of postsynthesis NPs by laser irradiation in the presence of a gold salt to tune their resonance wavelengths. Plasmonic resonances driven by femtosecond laser irradiation are used to tune the redox activity of AuCl4 – ions in the presence of gold nanorods, which leads to a reshaping of NPs. All chemical intermediates and products are monitored by in situ UV–visible spectroscopy and ex situ electron microscopy analysis and then compared to 3D simulations in order to unveil the underlying photochemical processes. As such, these results not only pave the way for the fine-tuning of the plasmon resonance of gold colloids over a wide spectral range, which can have an impact on many application areas such as plasmonic colors, sensors, or absorbers but also feed into the very active field of plasmonic photocatalysis.

Abstract:Direct laser writing method is a promising technique for the large-scale and cost-effective fabrication of periodic nanostructure arrays exciting hybrid lattice plasmons. This type of electromagnetic mode manifests a narrow and deep resonance peak with a high dispersion whose precise controllability is crucial for practical applications in photonic devices. Here, the formation of differently shaped gold nanostructures using the direct laser writing method on Au layers of different thicknesses is presented. The resonance peak is demonstrated to be highly dependent on the shape of the structures in the array, thus its position in the spectra, as well as the quality, can be additionally modulated by changing the morphology. The shape of the structure and the resonance itself pertain not only on the laser pulse energy but also on the grating period. This overlapping effect occurring at distances smaller than the diameter of the focused laser beam is studied in detail. By taking advantage of the highly controllable plasmonic resonance, the fabricated gratings open up new opportunities for applications in sensing.

Abstract:Laser science has tackled physical limitations to achieve higher power, faster and smaller light sources. The quest for ultra-compact laser that can directly generate coherent optical fields at the nano-scale, far beyond the diffraction limit of light, remains a key fundamental challenge. Microscopic lasers based on photonic crystals3, metal clad cavities4 and nanowires can now reach the diffraction limit, which restricts both the optical mode size and physical device dimension to be larger than half a wavelength. While surface plasmons are capable of tightly localizing light, ohmic loss at optical frequencies has inhibited the realization of truly nano-scale lasers. Recent theory has proposed a way to significantly reduce plasmonic loss while maintaining ultra-small modes by using a hybrid plasmonic waveguide. Using this approach, we report an experimental demonstration of nano-scale plasmonic lasers producing optical modes 100 times smaller than the diffraction limit, utilizing a high gain Cadmium Sulphide semiconductor nanowire atop a Silver surface separated by a 5 nm thick insulating gap. Direct measurements of emission lifetime reveal a broad-band enhancement of the nanowire's exciton spontaneous emission rate up to 6 times due to the strong mode confinement and the signature of apparently threshold-less lasing. Since plasmonic modes have no cut-off, we show downscaling of the lateral dimensions of both device and optical mode. As these optical coherent sources approach molecular and electronics length scales, plasmonic lasers offer the possibility to explore extreme interactions between light and matter, opening new avenues in active photonic circuits, bio-sensing and quantum information technology.
Photoemission of Plasmonic Gold Nanostars in Laser-Controlled Electron Current Devices for Technical and Biomedical Applications

Abstract:The main goal of this work was to modify the previously developed blade-type planar structure using plasmonic gold nanostars in order to stimulate photofield emission and provide efficient laser control of the electron current. Localization and enhancement of the field at the tips of gold nanostars provided a significant increase in the tunneling electron current in the experimental sample (both electrical field and photofield emission). Irradiation at a wavelength in the vicinity of the plasmon resonance (red laser) provided a gain in the photoresponse value of up to 5 times compared to irradiation far from the resonance (green laser). The prospects for transition to regimes of structure irradiation by femtosecond laser pulses at the wavelength of surface plasmon resonance, which lead to an increase in the local optical field, are discussed. The kinetics of the energy density of photoinduced hot and thermalized electrons is estimated. The proposed laser-controlled matrix current source is promising for use in X-ray computed tomography systems.

Abstract:Simultaneous spatio-temporal confinement of energetic electron pulses to femtosecond and nanometer scales is a topic of great interest in the scientific community, given the potential impact of such development on a wide spectrum of scientific and industrial applications. For example, in ultrafast electron scattering, nanoscale probes would enable accurate maps of structural dynamics in materials with nanoscale heterogeneity, thereby understanding the role of boundaries and defects on macroscopic properties. On the other hand, advances in this field are mostly limited by the electron source brightness and size. We present the design, fabrication, and optical characterization of bullseye plasmonic lenses for next-generation ultrafast electron sources. Using electromagnetic simulations, we examine how the interplay between light-plasmon coupling, plasmon propagation, dispersion, and resonance governs the properties of the photoemitted electron pulse. We also illustrate how the pulse duration and strength can be tuned by geometric design, and predict sub-10 fs pulses with nanoscale diameter can be achieved. We then fabricated lenses in gold films and characterized their plasmonic properties with cathodoluminescence spectromicroscopy, demonstrating suitable plasmonic behavior for ultrafast, nanoscale photoemission.

Abstract:Progress in ultrafast electron microscopy relies on the development of efficient laser-driven electron sources delivering femtosecond electron pulses to the sample. In particular, recent advances employ photoemission from metal nanotips as coherent point-like femtosecond low-energy electron sources. We report the nonlinear emission of ultrashort electron wave packets from a gold nanotip generated by nonlocal excitation and nanofocusing of surface plasmon polaritons. We verify the nanoscale localization of plasmon-induced electron emission by its electrostatic collimation characteristics. With a plasmon polariton pulse duration below 8 fs at the apex, we identify multiphoton photoemission as the underlying emission process. The quantum efficiency of the plasmon-induced emission exceeds that of photoemission from direct apex illumination. We demonstrate the application for plasmon-triggered point-projection imaging of an individual semiconductor nanowire at 3 $\mu$m tip-sample distance. Based on numerical simulations we estimate an electron pulse duration at the sample below 10 fs for tip-sample distances up to few micrometers. Plasmon-driven nanolocalized electron emission thus enables femtosecond point-projection microscopy with unprecedented temporal and spatial resolution, femtosecond low-energy electron in-line holography, and opens a new route towards femtosecond scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy.

Half-Wave Dipolar Metal-Semiconductor Laser

Abstract:Nano-scale lasers harnessing metallic plasmons hold promise across physical sciences and industrial applications. Plasmons are categorized as surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) and localized surface plasmons (LSP). While SPP has gained popularity for nano-lasers by fitting a few cycles of SPP waves into resonators, achieving LSP lasing in single nanoparticles remains an elusive goal. Here, we highlight the equivalence of LSP and SPP within resonant systems and present lasers oscillating in the lowest-order LSP or, equivalently, half-cycle SPP. This diffraction-limited dipolar emitter is realized through strong coupling of plasmonic oscillation in gold and dielectric resonance in high-gain III-V semiconductor in the near infrared away from surface plasmon frequencies. The resulting single-mode stimulated emission peak exhibits linewidth Q factors over 50 at room temperature, with wide tunability spanning from 1190 to 1460 nm determined by resonator sizes ranging from 190 to 280 nm. A semiconductor laser model elucidates the temporal and spectral buildup dynamics under optical pumping. Notably, linewidth Q values surpassing 250 are attained from higher-order, isolated laser particles within live biological cells. These results offer fresh perspectives in nanophotonics and indicate promising opportunities for multiplexed biological applications.

Harnessing Plasmonic Interference for Nanoscale Ultrafast Electron Sources

Abstract:In this paper we demonstrate the use of plasmonic focusing in conjunction with non-linear photoemisison to develop geometrically flat nanoscale electron sources with less than 40 pm-rad root mean squared (rms) normalized transverse emittance. Circularly polarized light is incident on a gold Archimedean spiral structure to generate surface-plasmon-polaritons which interfere coherently at the center resulting in a 50 nm rms emisison area. Such a nanostructured flat surface enables simultaneous spatio-temporal confinement of emitted electrons at the nanometer and femtosecond level and can be used as an advanced electron source for high-repetition-rate ultrafast electron diffraction and microscopy experiments as well as next-generation of miniaturized particle accelerators.

Abstract:With the rapid development of information and communication technology, a key objective in the field of optoelectronic integrated devices is to reduce the nano-laser size and energy consumption. Photonics nanolasers are unable to exceed the diffraction limit and typically exhibit low modulation rates of several GHz. In contrast, plasmonic nanolaser utilizes highly confined surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode that can exceed diffraction limit and their strong Purcell effect can accelerate the modulation rates to several THz. Herein, we propose a parametrically tunable artificial plasmonic nanolasers based on metal-insulator-semiconductor-insulator-metal (MISIM) structure, which demonstrates its ability to compress the mode field volume to lambda/14. As the pump power increases, the proposed artificial plasmonic nanolaser exhibits 20-nm-wide output spectrum. Additionally, we investigate the effects of various cavity parameters on the nanolaser's output threshold, offering potentials for realizing low-threshold artificial plasmonic nanolasers. Moreover, we observe a blue shift in the center wavelength of the nanolaser output with thinner gain layer thickness, predominantly attributed to the increased exciton-photon coupling strength. Our work brings inspiration to several areas, including spaser-based interconnects, nano-LEDs, spontaneous emission control, miniaturization of photon condensates, eigenmode engineering of plasmonic nanolasers, and optimal design driven by artificial intelligence (AI).
Ultra-Dense Plasmonic Nanogap Arrays for Reorientable Molecular Fluorescence Enhancement and Spectrum Reshaping

Abstract:Understanding interactions between molecular transition and intense electromagnetic fields confined by plasmon nanostructures is of great significance due to its huge potential in fundamental cavity quantum electrodynamics and practical applications. Here, we report reorientable plasmon-enhanced fluorescence leveraging the flexibilities in densely-packed gold nanogap arrays by template-assisted depositions. By fine adjusting the symmetry of the unit structure, arrays of nanogaps along two nearly-orthogonal axes can be tailored collectively with spacing down to sub-10 nm on a single chip, facilitating distinct "inter-cell" and "intra-cell" plasmon couplings. Through engineering two sets of nanogaps, the varying hybridization-induced plasmonic bonding modes lead to adjustable splitting of fluorescence emission peak with a width up to 81 nm and narrowing of linewidths up to a factor of 3. Besides, polarization anisotropy with a ratio up to 63% is obtained on the basis of spectrally separated local hotspots with discrepant oscillation directions. The developed plasmonic nanogap array is envisaged to provide a promising chip-scale, cost-effective platform for advancing fluorescence-based detection and emission technologies in both classical and quantum regimes.

Unidirectional, Ultrafast, and Bright Spontaneous Emission Source Enabled by a Hybrid Plasmonic Nanoantenna

Abstract:Inefficient and wide-angle emission as well as low emission rate of optical nanoemitters (such as quantum dots) have been strongly limiting their practical applications in next-generation nanophotonic devices, such as nanoscale light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and on-chip single photon sources. Optical nanoantennas provide a promising way to deal with these challenges. Yet, there has been no solution that can overcome these drawbacks simultaneously on a single device. Here, a hybrid plasmonic nanoantenna consisting of a silver nanocube positioned at the center of a gold concentric-ring structure is proposed, which can simultaneously enhance the emission directionality and decay rate of quantum dots embedded in the nanogap beneath the nanocube while maintaining high quantum efficiency. Coupling quantum dots to this nanoantenna can result in 60% of the emitted photons collected by the first lens with a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.5 and 21% for a NA of 0.12. The total emission intensity and decay rate are enhanced by 121-fold and 424-fold, respectively, compared with quantum dots on a glass substrate. A high quantum efficiency above 50% is obtained in simulation. This novel platform can be applied to enhance various types of optical nanoemitters and to develop high-speed directional nano-LEDs and single photon sources.

Abstract:In this work, near‐infrared emitting HgTe quantum dots are coupled to plasmonic metasurfaces supporting quasi‐bounded states in the continuum modes, which efficiently tune the output emission from the quantum dot monolayer. A 12‐fold enhancement in photoluminescence is observed, with controllable emission spectra shaping and improved directivity due to the Purcell effect, as corroborated by systematic optical measurements and optical simulations. In order to advance the development of quantum emitter‐based devices, it is essential to enhance light‐matter interactions through coupling between semiconductor quantum dots with high quality factor resonators. Here, efficient tuning of the emission properties of HgTe quantum dots in the infrared spectral region is demonstrated by coupling them to a plasmonic metasurface that supports bound states in the continuum. The plasmonic metasurface, composed of an array of gold nanobumps, is fabricated using single‐step direct laser printing, opening up new opportunities for creating exclusive 3D plasmonic nanostructures and advanced photonic devices in the infrared region. A 12‐fold enhancement of the photoluminescence in the 900–1700 nm range is observed under optimal coupling conditions. By tuning the geometry of the plasmonic arrays, controllable shaping of the emission spectra is achieved, selectively enhancing specific wavelength ranges across the emission spectrum. The observed enhancement and shaping of the emission are attributed to the Purcell effect, as corroborated by systematic measurements of radiative lifetimes and optical simulations based on the numerical solution of Maxwell's equations. Moreover, coupling of the HgTe photoluminescence to high quality factor modes of the metasurface improves emission directivity, concentrating output within an ≈20° angle.
