Abstract:This study aimed to investigate whether different salinity stresses (0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 ppt NaCl) affect the histoarchitecture, serum biochemical indices, antioxidant responses, and transcriptome analysis of the red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii. Transmission electron microscopy results showed that the degree of damage to the nuclei and mitochondria in the hepatopancreas increased with increasing salinity. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that the degree of gill wrinkles was enhanced under salinity stress. Serum biochemical indices demonstrated that the cholesterol significantly decreased while the triglyceride, aspartate transaminase, and alanine transaminase contents significantly increased with increasing salinity. The antioxidant parameters, including catalase, total antioxidant capacity, and glutathione peroxidase, significantly decreased, while the malondialdehyde content significantly increased under salinity stress. Transcriptome analysis revealed that the expression pattern of immune-related genes showed a downward trend. These findings enrich our knowledge about the salinity stress response of farmed organisms and provide a theoretical base for salinity domestication and saline soil cultivation of P. clarkii, which might contribute to income improvement, employment generation, food security, and environmental safety.
Coping with stress: Salt type, concentration, and exposure history limit life history tradeoffs in response to road salt salinization

Abstract:Substantial increases in the salinity of freshwater ecosystems has occurred around the globe from causes such as climate change, industrial operations, and the application of road deicing salts. We know very little about how plastic responses in life history traits or rapid evolution of new traits among freshwater organisms could promote stability in ecological communities affected by salinization. We performed a cohort life history analysis from birth to death with 180 individuals of a ubiquitous freshwater zooplankter to understand how life history traits are affected by exposure to two common salt types causing salinization-sodium chloride (NaCl) and calcium chloride (CaCl2)-across two environmentally relevant concentrations. We also tested if a multi-generational exposure history to high salinity altered life-history responses. We tracked and measured lifespan, time to maturation, brood size, brood interval, and body size. We found smaller brood sizes but slightly longer lifespans occurred at a low concentration of NaCl (230 mg Cl-/L). The longer lifespans led to more, albeit smaller broods, which generated a similar lifetime reproductive output compared to the no-salt control populations. At higher concentrations of NaCl and CaCl2, we found lifetime reproductive output was reduced by 23 % to 83 % relative to control populations because no tradeoff among life history traits occurred. In CaCl2, we observed shorter life spans, longer time intervals between smaller broods, and smaller body sizes leading to reduced lifetime reproductive output. We also found that a multi-generational exposure to the salt types did not convey any advantages for lifetime reproductive output. In some cases, the exposure history worsened the life history trait responses suggesting maladaptation. Our findings suggest that life history tradeoffs for freshwater species can occur in response to salinization, but these tradeoffs will largely depend on salt type and concentration, which will have implications for biodiversity and ecological stability.

Abstract:Freshwater bacterial communities exposed to salt pollution respond differentially depending on the type of salt causing the impairment. Identifying the composition of salts contributing to freshwater salinization can be useful in predicting ecological outcomes of salt pollution and as a means of guiding mitigation efforts. The degradation of freshwater systems by salt pollution is a threat to global freshwater resources. Salinization is commonly identified by increased specific conductance (conductivity), a proxy for salt concentrations. However, conductivity fails to account for the diversity of salts entering freshwaters and the potential implications this has on microbial communities and functions. We tested 4 types of salt pollution—MgCl2, MgSO4, NaCl, and Na2SO4—on bacterial taxonomic and functional α‐, β‐diversity of communities originating from streams in two distinct localities (Nebraska [NE] and Ohio [OH], USA). Community responses depended on the site of origin, with NE and OH exhibiting more pronounced decreases in community diversity in response to Na2SO4 and MgCl2 than other salt amendments. A closer examination of taxonomic and functional diversity metrics suggests that core features of communities are more resistant to induced salt stress and that marginal features at both a population and functional level are more likely to exhibit significant structural shifts based on salt specificity. The lack of uniformity in community response highlights the need to consider the compositional complexities of salinization to accurately identify the ecological consequences of instances of salt pollution.

Abstract:Humans are globally increasing the salt concentration of freshwaters (i.e. freshwater salinization), leading to significant effects at the population, community and ecosystem level. The present theme issue focuses on priority research questions and delivers results that contribute to shaping the future research agenda on freshwater salinization as well as fostering our capacity to manage salinization. The issue is structured along five topics: (i) the estimation of future salinity and evaluation of the relative contribution of the different drivers; (ii) the physiological responses of organisms to alterations in ion concentrations with a specific focus on the osmophysiology of freshwater insects and the responses of different organisims to seawater intrusion; (iii) the impact of salinization on ecosystem functioning, also considering the connections between riparian and stream ecosystems; (iv) the role of context in moderating the response to salinization. The contributions scrutinise the role of additional stressors, biotic interactions, the identify of the ions and their ratios, as well as of the biogeographic and evolutionary context; and (v) the public discourse on salinization and recommendations for management and regulation. In this paper we introduce the general background of salinization, outline research gaps and report key findings from the contributions to this theme issue. Evolved tolerance to freshwater salinization in zooplankton: life-history trade-offs, cross-tolerance and reducing cascading effects

Abstract:Recent discoveries have documented evolutionary responses to freshwater salinization. We investigated if evolutionary responses to salinization exhibit life-history trade-offs or if they can mitigate ecological impacts such as cascading effects through mechanisms of tolerance and cross-tolerance. We conducted an outdoor mesocosm experiment using populations of Daphnia pulex-a ubiquitous algal grazer-that were either naive or had previously experienced selection to become more tolerant to sodium chloride (NaCl). During the initial phase of population growth, we discovered that evolved tolerance comes at the cost of slower population growth in the absence of salt. We found evolved Daphnia populations maintained a tolerance to NaCl approximately 30 generations after the initial discovery. Evolved tolerance to NaCl also conferred cross-tolerance to a high concentration of CaCl2 (3559 µS cm-1) and a moderate concentration of MgCl2 (967 µS cm-1). A higher concentration of MgCl2 (2188 µS cm-1) overwhelmed the cross-tolerance and killed all Daphnia Tolerance to NaCl did not mitigate NaCl-induced cascades leading to phytoplankton blooms, but cross-tolerance at moderate concentrations of MgCl2 and high concentrations of CaCl2 mitigated such cascading effects caused by these two salts. These discoveries highlight the important interplay between ecology and evolution in understanding the full impacts of freshwater salinization.This article is part of the theme issue 'Salt in freshwaters: causes, ecological consequences and future prospects'.

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities such as mining, agriculture and industrial wastes have increased the rate of salinization of freshwater ecosystems around the world. Despite the known and probable consequences of freshwater salinization, few consequential regulatory standards and management procedures exist. Current regulations are generally inadequate because they are regionally inconsistent, lack legal consequences and have few ion-specific standards. The lack of ion-specific standards is problematic, because each anthropogenic source of freshwater salinization is associated with a distinct set of ions that can present unique social and economic costs. Additionally, the environmental and toxicological consequences of freshwater salinization are often dependent on the occurrence, concentration and ratios of specific ions. Therefore, to protect fresh waters from continued salinization, discrete, ion-specific management and regulatory strategies should be considered for each source of freshwater salinization, using data from standardized, ion-specific monitoring practices. To develop comprehensive monitoring, regulatory, and management guidelines, we recommend the use of co-adaptive, multi-stakeholder approaches that balance environmental, social, and economic costs and benefits associated with freshwater salinization.This article is part of the theme issue 'Salt in freshwaters: causes, ecological consequences and future prospects'.
Subsidy-stress responses of ecosystem functions along experimental freshwater salinity gradients

Abstract:Human activity is increasing salt concentrations in freshwaters worldwide, but effects of freshwater salinity gradients on biogeochemical cycling are less understood than in saline, brackish, or marine environments. Using controlled microcosm experiments, we characterized (1) short-term (one to five days) biogeochemical responses and (2) water column metabolism along a freshwater salinity gradient of multiple salt types. After one day, microcosms were oxic (4.48–7.40 mg O 2 L −1 ) but became hypoxic (1.20–3.31 mg L −1 ) by day five. After one day in oxic conditions, microbial respiration in magnesium-, sodium-, and sea salt-based salinity treatments showed a subsidy-stress response, with respiration increasing by over 100% as salinity increased from 30 to 350–800 μS cm −1 . Conversely, respiration consistently increased along a calcium-based salinity gradient, peaking at 1500 μS cm −1 . By day five, an inverse subsidy-stress response was observed with elevated respiration at upper or lower ends of the gradient except for the magnesium treatment, which had the lowest respiration at the highest salinity. Calcium- and magnesium-based salinity treatments also caused considerable changes in phosphorus concentrations and C:P and N:P. In a separate experiment, microbial respiration and water column primary production also displayed subsidy-stress responses, but imbalances in effect sizes caused consistently declining net community production with increasing salinity. Collectively, our results establish that short-term exposure to different salt ion concentrations can enhance freshwater biogeochemical cycling at relatively low concentrations and alter resource stoichiometry. Furthermore, the nature of effects of freshwater salinization may also change with oxygen availability.

Abstract:Aim In salt‐affected environments, salinity shapes ecosystem functions and species composition. Apart from salinity, however, we know little about how soil chemical factors affect plant species. We hypothesized that specific ions, most of which contribute to salinity, co‐determine plant niche differentiation. We asked if the importance of ions differs for species with (halophytes) and without (associated species) physiological adaptations to saline soils. Location Carpatho‐Pannonian region (Central and Eastern Europe). Time period 2005–2021. Major taxa studied Vascular plants. Methods We recorded species occurrences and collected soil samples in 433 plots in saline habitats. We measured pH, salinity (electrical conductivity), and concentrations of Ca2+, K+, Mg2+, Na+, SO42− Cl−, CO32− and mineral nitrogen (mN) and calculated the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR). For 88 species, we fitted response curves with Huisman–Olff–Fresco (HOF) models. To study ions' effects on species composition and ions' variance, we compared unconstrained and constrained ordinations and performed a principal component analysis. We used random forests to analyse the importance of ions for individual species and created two‐dimensional species niche plots for key ions. Results Ion concentration niches varied among species and did not necessarily correspond to soil salinity or alkalinity. We frequently observed monotonic, sigmoidal model responses, while skewed unimodal responses were rare. Ions explained a considerable proportion of species compositional variation. Particularly, Na+, SO42−, Cl−, and CO32− contributed to the ions' variance. Na+, followed by SO42−, Cl−, CO32−, Ca2+, Mg2+, and mN, was most important for the occurrence of individual species. Compared to associated species, Na+, SO42−, and mN were significantly less important for halophytes, whereas Cl− and CO32− played a significant role. Main conclusions We show that ion composition co‐determines niche differentiation in saline soils, suggesting evolved physiological adaptations in halophytes. Our study calls for incorporating high‐resolution data on soil ion composition in ecological research.

Abstract:Salinization and eutrophication are nearly ubiquitous in watersheds with human activity. Despite the known impacts of the freshwater salinization syndrome (FSS) to organisms, we demonstrate a pronounced knowledge gap on how FSS alters wetland biogeochemistry. Most experiments assessing FSS and biogeochemistry pertain to coastal saltwater intrusion. The few inland wetland studies mostly add salt as sodium chloride. Sodium chloride alone does not reflect the ionic composition of inland salinization, which derives from heterogeneous sources, producing spatially and temporally variable ionic mixtures. We develop mechanistic hypotheses for how elevated ionic strength and changing ionic composition alter urban wetland sediment biogeochemistry, with the prediction that FSS diminishes nutrient removal capacity via a suite of related direct and indirect processes. We propose that future efforts specifically investigate inland urban wetlands, a category of wetland heavily relied on for its biogeochemical processing ability that is likely to be among the most impacted by salinization.

Abstract:When it comes to the investigation of key ecosystems in the world, we often omit salt from the ecological recipe. In fact, despite occupying almost half of the volume of inland waters and providing crucial services to humanity and nature, inland saline ecosystems are often overlooked in discussions regarding the preservation of global aquatic resources of our planet. As a result, our knowledge of the biological and geochemical dynamics shaping these environments remains incomplete and we are hesitant in framing effective protective strategies against the increasing natural and anthropogenic threats faced by such habitats. Hypersaline lakes, water bodies where the concentration of salt exceeds 35 g/l, occur mainly in arid and semiarid areas resulting from hydrological imbalances triggering the accumulation of salts over time. Often considered the 'exotic siblings' within the family of inland waters, these ecosystems host some of the most extremophile communities worldwide and provide essential habitats for waterbirds and many other organisms in already water-stressed regions. These systems are often highlighted as natural laboratories, ideal for addressing central ecological questions due to their relatively low complexity and simple food web structures. However, recent studies on the biogeochemical mechanisms framing hypersaline communities have challenged this archetype, arguing that newly discovered highly diverse communities are characterised by specific trophic interactions shaped by high levels of specialisation. The main goal of this review is to explore our current understanding of the ecological dynamics of hypersaline ecosystems by addressing four main research questions: (i) why are hypersaline lakes unique from a biological and geochemical perspective; (ii) which biota inhabit these ecosystems and how have they adapted to the high salt conditions; (iii) how do we protect biodiversity from increasing natural and anthropogenic threats; and (iv) which scientific tools will help us preserve hypersaline ecosystems in the future? First, we focus on the ecological characterisation of hypersaline ecosystems, illustrate hydrogeochemical dynamics regulating such environments, and outline key ecoregions supporting hypersaline systems across the globe. Second, we depict the diversity and functional aspects of key taxa found in hypersaline lakes, from microorganisms to plants, invertebrates, waterbirds and upper trophic levels. Next, we describe ecosystem services and discuss possible conservation guidelines. Finally, we outline how cutting-edge technologies can provide new insights into the study of hypersaline ecology. Overall, this review sheds further light onto these understudied ecosystems, largely unrecognised as important sources of unique biological and functional diversity. We provide perspectives for key future research avenues, and advocate that the conservation of hypersaline lakes should not be taken with 'a grain of salt'.

Abstract:The increasing application of road deicing agents (e.g., NaCl) has caused widespread salinization of freshwater environments. Chronic exposure to toxic NaCl levels can impact freshwater biota at genome to ecosystem scales, yet the degree of harm caused by road salt pollution is likely to vary among habitats and populations. The background ion chemistry of freshwater environments may strongly impact NaCl toxicity, with greater harm occurring in ion‐poor, soft water conditions. In addition, populations exposed to salinization may evolve increased NaCl tolerance. Notably, if organisms are adapted to the water chemistry of their natal environment, toxicity responses may also vary among populations in a given test medium. We examined the potential for this evolutionary and environmental context to interact in shaping NaCl toxicity with a pair of laboratory reciprocal transplant toxicity experiments, using natural populations of the water flea Daphnia ambigua collected from three lakes that vary in ion availability and composition. We observed a strong effect of the lake water environment on NaCl toxicity in both trials. NaCl caused a much greater decline in reproduction and r in lake water from a low‐ion/calcium‐poor environment (20 μS/cm specific conductance; 1.7 mg/L Ca2+) compared with water from both a Ca2+‐rich lake (55 μS/cm; 7.2 mg/L Ca2+) and an ion‐rich coastal lake (420 μS/cm; 3.4 mg/L Ca2+). Daphnia from this coastal lake were most robust to the effects of NaCl on reproduction and r. A significant interaction between the population and lake water environment shaped survival in both trials, suggesting that local adaptation to the test waters used may have contributed to toxicity responses. Our findings that the lake water environment, adaptation to that environment, and adaptation to a contaminant of interest may shape toxicity demonstrate the importance of considering environmental and biological complexity in mitigating pollution impacts.

Abstract:Salinization of soil is recognised as one of the most pressing environmental challenges to resolve for the next century. We here conduct a synoptic review of the available research on how salt affects decomposer microbial communities and carbon (C) cycling in soil. After summarizing known physiological responses of microorganisms to salinity, we provide a brief overview and qualification of a selection of widely applied methods to assess microorganisms in soil to date. The dominant approaches to characterise microbial responses to salt exposure have so far been microbial biomass and respiration measurements. We compile datasets from a selection of studies and find that (1) microbial biomass-carbon (C) per C held in soil organic matter shows no consistent pattern with long-term (field gradients) or short-term (laboratory additions) soil salinity level, and (2) respiration per soil organic C is substantially inhibited by higher salt concentrations in soil, and consistently so for both short-term and long-term salinity levels. Patterns that emerge from extra-cellular enzyme assessments are more difficult to generalize, and appear to vary with the enzyme studied, and its context. Growth based assessments of microbial responses to salinization are largely lacking. Relating the established responses of microbial respiration to that of growth could provide an estimate for how the microbial C-use efficiency would be affected by salt exposure. This would be a valuable predictor for changes in soil C sequestration. A few studies have investigated the connection between microbial tolerance to salt and the soil salinity levels, but so far results have not been conclusive. We predict that more systematic inquiries including comprehensive ranges of soil salinities will substantiate a connection between soil salinity and microbial tolerance to salt. This would confirm that salinity has a direct effect on the composition of microbial communities. While salt has been identified as one of the most powerful environmental factors to structure microbial communities in aquatic environments, no up-to-date sequence based assessments currently exist from soil. Filling this gap should be a research priority. Moreover, linking sequencing based assessments of microbial communities to their tolerance to salt would have the potential to yield biomarker sets of microbial sequences. This could provide predictive power for, e.g., the sensitivity of agricultural soils to salt exposure, and, as such, a useful tool for soil resource management. We conclude that salt exposure has a powerful influence on soil microbial communities and processes. In addition to being one of the most pressing agricultural problems to solve, this influence could also be used as an experimental probe to better understand how microorganisms control the biogeochemistry in soil.

Abstract:The proportion of wood frogs alive across nine populations when exposed to a lethal concentration of NaCl. Warmer colors indicate populations whose source pond had higher chloride concentrations and cooler colors indicate populations whose source pond had lower chloride concentrations. The asterisk indicates significantly higher survival. The increasing salinization of freshwaters is a growing environmental issue as a result of mining, agriculture, climate change, and the application of de‐icing salts in regions that experience ice and snow. Due to narrow osmotic limits, many freshwater species are particularly susceptible to salinization, but it is possible that repeated exposures over time could favor the evolution of increased salt tolerance. Using collected nine populations of larval wood frogs (Rana sylvatica) as eggs from ponds and wetlands with close proximity to roads and spanning a wide gradient of salt concentrations. In the first experiment, we used a time‐to‐death experiment to examine the salt tolerance. In a second experiment, we examined whether population differences in salt tolerance were associated with trade‐offs in growth, development, or behavior in the presence of control water or a sublethal salt concentration. We found that populations collected from ponds with low and intermediate salt concentrations exhibited similar tolerance curves over a 96‐h exposure. However, the population from a pond with the highest salt concentration exhibited a much higher tolerance. We also found population differences in growth, development, and activity level among the populations, but these were not associated with population differences in tolerance. In addition, the sublethal concentration of salt had no impact on growth and development, but it did cause a reduction in tadpole activity across the populations. Collectively, these results provide further evidence that some species of freshwater organisms can evolve tolerance to increasing salinization, although it may only occur under relatively high concentrations and without trade‐offs in growth, development, or behavior.

Abstract:The graphical abstract depicts how changes in the water salinity affect the physiology, immunity and overall growth of important crustacean decapods. Salinity is one of the primary determinants in the distribution of crustacean decapods in aquatic habitats. In recent years, the production of economically important crustaceans, and decapods in inland saline areas has increased considerably. The osmoregulatory capacity of these decapods renders them culturable in wide salinity ranges, contributing to a global industry valued at billions of dollars. Therefore, gaining insights into the fundamental mechanisms that drive the adaptive capacity of crustaceans to thrive in diverse salinity ranges is essential. This comprehensive review paper unveils the pivotal adaptations of decapods that allow them to flourish in diverse salinities, ranging from freshwater to saline waters. This article discusses the molecular mechanisms of osmoregulation in decapod crustaceans with more emphasis on Litopenaeus vannammei. Moreover, the importance of maintaining an ideal osmotic balance for efficient digestion and nutrient absorption in L. vannamei is discussed. Furthermore, the effect of salinity on disease resistance in these species is explored, highlighting the need for effective disease management in aquaculture. Overall, this review explores the multifaceted factors influencing decapod crustaceans' adaptation to shifting salinities and also emphasizes the ongoing need for continued research in this domain.

Abstract:Significance Salinization and alkalinization impact water quality, but these processes have been studied separately, except in arid regions. Globally, salinization has been largely attributed to agriculture, resource extraction, and land clearing. Alkalinization has been attributed to recovery from acidification, with less recognition as an environmental issue. We show that salinization and alkalinization are linked, and trends in these processes impact most of the drainage area of the United States. Increases in salinity and alkalinity are caused by inputs of salts containing strong bases and carbonates that originate from anthropogenic sources and accelerated weathering. We develop a conceptual model unifying our understanding of salinization and alkalinization and its drivers and impacts on fresh water in North America over the past century.

Abstract:Biological invasions and continued salinization of freshwater are two global issues with largely serious ecological consequences. Increasing salinity in freshwater systems, as an environmental stressor, may negatively affect normal life activities in fish. It has been documented that salinity limits the invasive success of alien species by mediating physiological and life-history performances, however, there are few studies on how salinity affects its invasive process via altered behaviors. Using wild-caught invasive western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) as animal model, in this study, we asked whether gradual increasing salinity affects behaviors (personality and mate choice decision here), life-history traits, as well as the correlation between them by exposing G. affinis to three levels salinity (freshwater, 10 and 20‰). Results showed that, with increased salinity, male tended to be shyer, less active, less sociable, and reduced desire to mate, and female tended to be shyer, less active and lost preferences for the larger male. Furthermore, across salinity treatments, male exhibited reduced body fat content and rising reproduction allocation, however, pregnant female revealed diametrically opposed trends. In addition, the correlation between life-history traits and behaviors was only identified in pregnant female. It seems that either salinity or life-history traits directly affects mosquitofish behaviors. In summary, our results partially emphasize the harmful consequences of salinity on both life-history traits and behavioral performances. These findings provide a novel perspective on how salinity potentially affect fish fitness via altering personalities, mate choice decisions, as well as body condition, and hence supports the idea that salinity could affect the spread of invasive mosquitofish.

Abstract:Freshwater salinisation is a growing problem worldwide, affecting surface and groundwater resources. Compared with other global environmental issues, freshwater salinisation has been studied extensively in North America, Australia, and Europe but less so in South America, Asia, and Africa. Both the natural and anthropogenic sources can contribute for freshwater salinisation, through the concentration of dissolved salts in water rising above its normal levels. This review provides a comprehensive assessment of the causes of freshwater salinisation, the impacts on freshwater communities and ecosystem functions, the adaptive mechanisms for survival in an increasingly saline environment, and the management strategies available to control freshwater salinisation. Many human activities contribute to freshwater salinisation, including road salt use, agricultural practices, resource extraction, reservoir construction, and climate change. Aquatic organisms have evolved mechanisms to survive in increasingly saline environments, but excessive salinity can lead to mortality and non-lethal effects. Such effects can have cascading impacts on the structure and function of aquatic communities and ecosystem services. Therefore, monitoring programmes and chemical fingerprinting are needed to identify highly salinised areas, determine how various human activities contribute to freshwater salinisation, and implement management strategies. Furthermore, current research on freshwater salinisation has been limited to a few regions of the world. It is essential to expand the research further into exploring the impacts of salinisation on freshwater resources in unexplored geographic areas of the world that are mainly impacted by climate change scenarios.

The Science of The Total Environment

Abstract:Aquatic organisms are challenged by changes in their external environment, such as temperature and salinity fluctuations. If these variables interacted with each other, the response of organisms to temperature changes would be modified by salinity and vice versa. We tested for potential interaction between temperature and salinity effects on freshwater, brackish, and marine organisms, including algae, macrophytes, heterotrophic protists, parasites, invertebrates, and fish. We performed a meta-analysis that compared the thermal tolerance (characterised by the temperature optimum, lower and upper temperature limits, and thermal breadth) at various salinities. The meta-analysis was based on 90 articles (algae: 15; heterotrophic protists: 1; invertebrates: 43; and fish: 31). Studies on macrophytes and parasites were lacking. We found that decreasing salinity significantly increased and decreased the lower and upper temperature limits, respectively, in all groups. Thus, a lowered salinity increased the thermal sensitivity of organisms. These findings mainly reflect the response of brackish and marine organisms to salinity changes, which dominated our database. The few studies on freshwater species showed that their lower thermal limits increased and the upper thermal limits decreased with increasing salinity, albeit statistically nonsignificant. Although non-significant, the response of thermal tolerance to salinity changes differed between various organism groups. It generally decreased in the order of: algae > invertebrates > fish. Overall, our findings indicate adverse effects of salinity changes on the temperature tolerance of aquatic organisms. For freshwater species, studies are comparatively scarce and further studies on their thermal performance at various salinity gradients are required to obtain more robust evidence for interactions between salinity and temperature tolerance. Considering test conditions such as acclimation temperature and potential infection with parasites in future studies may decrease the variability in the relationship between salinity and thermal tolerance.
