Abstract:Expanded graphite (EG) is a carbon material prepared by the thermal expansion of graphite intercalation compounds. Herein, a novel chemical preparation method is employed to obtain magnetic EG composites with excellent radar attenuation performance in the 2–18 GHz range. Ferrocene is first intercalated into the natural flake graphite to form ferrocene graphite intercalation compounds (FGICs), and then oxidises to Fe3O4 during the thermal expansion of FGICs at 900 °C, while the FGICs are converted into magnetic EG composites in this process. The success of ferrocene intercalation reaction is confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, fourier transformation infrared spectroscope, X-ray diffraction, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy studies. The components and radar attenuation property of the magnetic EG composites are discussed. Both Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 exist in the final EG composites and a high radar attenuation of −18 dB at 18 GHz is obtained, while the ferrocene/graphite ratio in the FGICs is 20%. The excellent radar attenuation property of the magnetic EG composites, together with good homogeneity and dispersion in air, can allow the composites to be used in many potential applications in radar countermeasure.

Abstract:Radar absorbing materials of nickel-coated carbon fiber (NCF) and nickel-coated flake graphite (NFG) were fabricated by electroless plating. Sufficient activation sites were vital to deposit a continuous and uniform coating layer. The morphology of the CF (FG) and NCF (NFG), Pd element content on the CF surface, the element components and the phases in the coating layer, magnetic properties of the NCF and NFG were examined by FESEM, EDS, XRD and VSM, respectively. The absorption properties of the samples were measured over the frequency range of 8–18GHz by the RAM reflectivity far field RCS method. NCF and NFG exhibit good absorption performances in high frequency. Specifically, the reflection loss (R.L.) of NCF (30%) less than −10dB begins from 14.4 to 18GHz and the R.L. is below −14dB at 18GHz.

Abstract:Nanoparticles of nickel–zinc ferrite have been prepared by using the citrate precursor method. According to scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the particle size is nanometric for the powder calcined at 350°C/3.5h. The phase formation has been studied by applying different calcining atmospheres, such as air and argon. Pure Ni–Zn ferrite has been observed when calcined in argon at the temperature of 350°C. Hysteresis analyses have been done with magnetization of 53.01emu/g at 350°C and obtaining 84.62emu/g at 1100°C due to an optimization of domains formation at high temperature. Measures of reflectivity of Ni–Zn ferrite/epoxy composite have been obtained below 21% at 350°C and above 96% at 1100°C with a coercive field of 26.61Oe. Low value of coercive field increased the mobilization of domains wall and increased the radiation absorption.

Abstract:Expanded graphite (EG) is a modified conductive lamellar carbon that has been widely studied in the field of electromagnetic wave absorption due to its low density, good electrical conductivity , and unique structure. However, its application is limited because the interlayer gap cannot match microwave wavelength, and its single composition has less microwave loss. In this study, sea urchin-like NiFe 2 O 4 /EG composites are prepared in situ between expanded graphite layers by microwave treatment. The sea urchin-like NiFe 2 O 4 grows between the expanded graphite to form a three-dimensional conductive network structure, which enhances conductive loss of composites and further increases the interlayer distance of EG. The extended interlayer distance promotes multiple reflections and scattering of electromagnetic waves in composites and improves dielectric properties. In addition, EG with a large specific surface area provides many active sites, further promoting interface and dipole polarization. Benefiting from synergistic effect of NiFe 2 O 4 and EG, magnetic loss and dielectric loss of NiFe 2 O 4 /EG composites have been improved and impedance matching is further enhanced. The results indicate that the minimal reflection loss of NiFe 2 O 4 /EG-4 reaches −53.47 dB at 2.69 mm, and the effective absorption bandwidth reaches 2.97 GHz. In addition, based on the computer simulation technology results, NiFe 2 O 4 /EG can attenuate microwave energy under experimental conditions. This work provides a strategy for synthesizing carbon matrix composites with adjustable dielectric parameters and electromagnetic wave properties.

Abstract:In the research of new type of absorbing materials, the influence of special three-dimensional (3D) microstructure and the composite effect of multi-component materials on the electromagnetic properties and absorbing properties of materials has attracted widespread attention. In this work, the 3D flower like ZnFe2O4 ferrite (3D-ZFO) was prepared by two solution chemical precipitation processes, and then a simple ultrasonic and heat treatment process was used to uniformly load the prepared 3D-ZFO on graphene nanosheets (GNs). A new wave absorber (3D-ZFO/GNs) composed of two-dimensional (2D) and 3D materials was obtained. Interestingly, the coprecipitation of Fe3+ and Zn2+ in alkaline solution transforms the 3D flower like ZnO template composed of flakes into ZnFe2O4 composed of lines. The combination with GNs can effectively enhance the conductance loss and dipole polarization, and create a new effective hetero interface. In addition, 3D-ZFO with high resistance and GNS with excellent conductivity form a micro circuit, which promotes the formation of micro current and is conducive to the dissipation of electromagnetic wave energy in the form of micro current. In the 2-18 GHz frequency band, 3D-ZFO/GNs with 5 wt% GNs can obtain an effective bandwidth of 5.56 GHz at a matching thickness of 1.5 mm. By controlling the thickness of the matching layer, the absorbing frequency band can be easily adjusted to meet the needs of multi-band absorbing. Considering the simple preparation process, the increase of the electromagnetic wave conduction path by the special microstructure and the synergistic effect of multiple loss mechanisms, we believe that the prepared 3D-ZFO/GNs is expected to be a candidate for high-efficiency microwave absorbers. Broadband Electromagnetic Wave Absorption of Ni0.5Zn0.5Nd0.04Fe1.96O4 Ferrites Modified by Nano-Silver Particles

Abstract:Ferrite materials have the potential to become excellent absorbing materials due to their high magnetic loss and good impedance matching. However, the disadvantages of high density and lack of dielectric loss capability limit its application. Herein, we used the citric acid sol-gel method and the self-propagating combustion method to prepare neodymium-doped nickel-zinc ferrite (NZNF), then the target effect of Sn2+ and an improved electroless silver plating process was used to plate a layer composed of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) with strong dielectric loss on the NZNF, and a magnetic/dielectric composite material (NZNF@Ag) with a heterogeneous structure was prepared. The number and particle size of Ag NPs on the surface of NZNF can be precisely controlled, thereby greatly enhancing the dielectric loss capability with little impact on the magnetic loss. The huge difference in conductivity between conductors and semiconductors promotes the occurrence of polarization at the hetero-geneous interface and significantly enhances the electromagnetic wave absorption ability of the composite material. In the 2-18 GHz frequency band, the best sample can obtain an effective bandwidth of 6.82 GHz when the matching thickness is 2.1 mm. Combining conductors with semiconductor materials to obtain significantly enhanced interfacial polarization provides a new idea for improving the performance of wave absorbing materials.
Preparation of nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide/zinc ferrite@nitrogen-doped carbon composite for broadband and highly efficient electromagnetic wave absorption

Abstract:Traditionally reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-based electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials have poor absorption effectiveness due to impedance mismatch caused by skin effect. The introduction of structural defects and the design of heterogeneous interfaces play a crucial role in enhancing the polarization effect of EMW absorbers. In this study, nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide/zinc ferrite@nitrogen-doped carbon (NRGO/ZnFe2O4@NC) ternary composite with rich heterogeneous interfaces is constructed by combining solvothermal reaction, in-situ polymerization, annealing treatment with subsequent hydrothermal reaction. The research results have shown that the obtained NRGO/ZnFe2O4@NC ternary composite exhibits a unique core-shell structure and excellent EMW absorption performance. At a thickness of 2.61 mm, the maximum effective absorption bandwidth can reach 7.2 GHz, spanning the entire Ku-band and a portion of the X-band, and the minimum reflection loss is –61.1 dB, which is superior to most reported RGO-based EMW absorbers. The excellent EMW absorbing ability is mainly ascribed to the optimized impedance matching and the enhanced polarization loss caused by the abundant heterogeneous interfaces and structural defects derived from heteroatomic nitrogen doping. Furthermore, the radar cross section in the far field is simulated by a computer simulation technique. This study provides a novel way to prepare core-shell magnetic carbon composites as highly efficient and broadband EMW absorbers.
Fabrication of Nd-doped Ni–Zn ferrite/multi-walled carbon nanotubes composites with effective microwave absorption properties

Abstract:The electromagnetic materials are featured by good magnetic permeability and dielectric constant characteristics, which are of significant importance in solving the pollution problem of electromagnetic. In this study, after the complete of the use of sol-gel method, argon gas was then introduced for calcination, and eventually a new type of MWCNTs/Ni0.5Zn0.5Nd0.04Fe1.96O4 composites was synthesized after the above mentioned procedures. The synthesized MWCNTs were able to be adsorbed on the surface of Ni0.5Zn0.5Nd0.04Fe1.96O4 and could form a good conductive work of 3D. Also, the effect of additional MWCNTs on microwave absorption properties of MWCNTs/Ni0.5Zn0.5Nd0.04Fe1.96O4 composites were also observed in this study. The results indicate that the additional MWCNTs function to significantly improve the microwave absorption property of MWCNTs/Ni0.5Zn0.5Nd0.04Fe1.96O4. Through altering the amount of MWCNTs, the microwave attenuation performance and impedance matching coefficient of this electromagnetic materials can be effectively improved. The S2 sample presented a minimum reflection loss of −35.05 dB when its thickness reached 1.6 mm, meanwhile, the effective absorption bandwidth achieved 4.55 GHz. The prepared composites perform well in microwave absorption, which can attribute to the reasonable ratio of composites as well as its interaction with both of the magnetic and dielectric components. This research paved the way for novel ideas to be put in the electromagnetic absorption materials with high-efficient.

Abstract:The composite of carbon foam with Ni-Zn ferrite as additive has been developed via foaming and carbonization process for electromagnetic interference shielding, using coal tar pitch as precursor and Ni-Zn ferrite as an additive. It was observed that the shielding effectiveness (SE) over the X-band frequency is enhanced along with the increase of Ni-Zn ferrite additive amount. The carbon foam with 15wt% Ni-Zn ferrite shows a SE of 42dB, which has a promising application prospect. The electromagnetic interference shielding mechanism of carbon foam with different amount of Ni-Zn ferrite additive is discussed in the work. An absorption-dominant mechanism, which is mainly associated with the magnetic property determined by the amount of Ni-Zn ferrite additive, has been revealed. It is also found that the mechanical strength of resultant carbon foams increases firstly and then decreases with the continuously increased amount of Ni-Zn ferrite additive.
Study on the microwave absorbing properties of Fe nanoparticles prepared by the HEIBE method in expanded graphite matrix composites

Abstract:Recent findings reveal that expanded graphite (EG) composite with metal nanoparticles has an excellent performance in the field of absorbing materials. The N-dope broken EG/FeNPs (NBEG/Fe) composites with sandwich structure and low graphitization degree were prepared through hydrothermal reaction. The doping N element further enhances the electrical conductivity of EG, the purpose is to be consistent with the high permeability of the core-shell Fe/Fe3O4 nanoparticles (FeNPs), which can effectively improve the matching impedance. The experimental results in the 2–18 GHz range prove that NBEG/Fe has better absorption performance than pure EG and BEG/Fe, and by changing the content of FeNPs, the purpose of effectively absorbing electromagnetic microwaves in different frequency bands can be achieved. With only 10% addition of NBEG/Fe, when the matching frequency is 15.67 and 4.51 GHz, and the matching thickness is 1.42 and 5.40 mm, the reflection loss (RL) of NBEG/Fe reaches −56.75 and −43.3 dB, the RL value of NBEG/Fe has also reached an effective absorption bandwidth of 3.92 GHz (RL ≤ 20.0 dB) in the interval 4.06–10.64 GHz. In particular, the RL value of NBEG/Fe in the S-band (at 3.74 GHz) reaches −40.3 dB at a thickness of 6.5 mm. Moreover, under the matching frequency and matching thickness good absorption performance (RL<−20.0 dB) from 2.00 GHz to 18.00 GHz is obtained.

Abstract:The graphene supported Ni0.8Zn0.2Ce0.06Fe1.94O4 nanocomposite was prepared by a deoxidation technique. The structure, morphology and electromagnetic properties of the composites were characterized by various instruments. The Ni0.8Zn0.2Ce0.06Fe1.94O4 powders could be distributed on the graphene sheets (GNS). The as-prepared Ni0.8Zn0.2Ce0.06Fe1.94O4/GNS nanocomposite exhibits a saturated magnetization of 50.42emu/g. The electromagnetic parameters of Ni0.8Zn0.2Ce0.06Fe1.94O4/GNS nanocomposite were investigated in the 2–18GHz range. The composite Ni0.8Zn0.2Ce0.06Fe1.94O4/GNS exhibits better microwave absorbing properties than Ni0.8Zn0.2Ce0.06Fe1.94O4. The minimum loss value of Ni0.8Zn0.2Ce0.06Fe1.94O4/GNS nanocomposite is −37.4dB at 12.3GHz and a broad peak with a bandwidth lower than −10dB is at 10.7–15.2GHz. These results show that the introduction of GNS can increase the complex permittivities and has an important effect on the improvement of microwave absorption properties.
FeCo/Graphene Nanocomposites for Applications as Electromagnetic Wave-Absorbing Materials

Abstract:Simple and efficient preparation high-performance magnetic carbon-based nanocomposites as electromagnetic wave-absorbing materials is a research hotspot. Here, employing a straightforward, ecologically friendly, and effective solid-state technique, FeCo/graphene nanocomposites with good electromagnetic wave absorption capabilities were successfully fabricated without the use of any external carbon sources. m-NaCl powder is combined with Co(acac)2 and Fe(acac)3 and then annealed at a particular temperature. During the annealing process, FeCo nanoparticles were synthesized and supported on graphene nanocomposites. Following annealing at 700 °C, the material showed an ideal reflection loss of −71.63 dB at 10.8 GHz, an effective bandwidth of 4.24 GHz, and a thickness of 2.68 mm. The radar cross section (RCS) of FeCo/C-700 is less than −10 dB m2, which provides evidence that the samples have good radar wave attenuation capabilities when the scattering angle is between 0 and 60°. The approach for creating graphene composites with FeCo nanoparticles suggested in this study serves as a crucial source of inspiration for the later development of new magnetic carbon nanocomposite systems.

Ultra‐wideband Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Properties of Parallel Expanded Graphite/fe3o4 Composites

Abstract:The rapid development of electronic devices in various fields has stimulated an increased demand for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials working in ultra-wideband frequencies of gigahertz. However, the aggregation problem and single attenuation mechanism severely limit the broadband shielding applications of nanomaterials. To address these challenges, a novel composite of parallel expanded graphite (EG) embedded in the densified Fe3O4 matrix is designed and successfully synthesized through the in situ chemical coprecipitation followed by pressure sintering. This unique structure creates heterogeneous interfaces by combining the conductive EG and magnetic Fe3O4. The significant dielectric and magnetic loss then arise from conduction and polarization loss, as well as the eddy current and resonance effects. The multiple reflections of electromagnetic waves between the oriented EG sheets further cause the "absorb-reflect-reabsorb" effect that prolongs the propagation paths and enhances the dissipation of electromagnetic waves. Based on these multiple mechanisms over an ultrawide range of frequencies (8.2-40 GHz), the EG/Fe3O4 composites exhibit exceptional EMI shielding performance, with an average shielding effectiveness of 29.3 dB, indicating the potential for multifunctional EMI shielding applications.
Fabrication of 1D Ni nanochains@Zn2+ doping polypyrrole/reduced graphene oxide composites for high-performance electromagnetic wave absorption

Abstract:Nowadays, electromagnetic radiation significantly impacts the normal operation of electronic devices and poses risks to human health. To effectively address this problem, the development of composites that exhibit exceptional electrochemical wave absorption through the combination of different components holds great promise. In this study, we have successfully prepared 1D Ni nanochains@Zn2+ doping polypyrrole/reduced graphene oxide (Ni NCs@Z-P/RGO, denoted as R-x) composites using a combination of hydrothermal, solvothermal, in situ polymerization, and physical blending methods. Notably, the R-2 composite demonstrates a remarkable minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of -63.58 dB at 14.3 GHz, with a thickness of 1.61 mm. Furthermore, the R-2 composite exhibits an impressive effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.08 GHz (11.92 GHz-17 GHz) at a thickness of 1.67 mm. These outstanding performances can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the different components and a well-thought-out structural design. Moreover, to showcase the practical applicability of the material, we have conducted additional investigations on the reduction of the radar cross-sectional area (RCS). The results strongly demonstrate that the prepared composite material, when used as a coating, effectively reduces the RCS value by up to 26.6 dB m2 for R-2 at θ = 0°. The experimental methods and simulations presented in this study hold significant potential for application in wave absorption research and practical implementations. Additionally, the prepared Ni NCs@Z-P/RGO composites demonstrate feasibility as wave-absorbing materials for future utilization.

Abstract:Spinel ferrites are widely used for electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption applications. In this study, spinel Ni–Zn ferrites with excellent microwave absorption properties were synthesized. Their EMW absorption characteristics and interaction mechanisms were studied to lay the foundation for the study of the role of Ni–Zn ferrite as a magnetic substrate for composites. Herein, Ni0 · 5Zn0 · 5Fe2O4 was prepared by the hydrothermal method (H-NZFO) and the sol–gel auto-combustion method (S-NZFO); both samples exhibited distinct microwave absorption properties. The S-NZFO absorber (thickness = 3.72 mm) demonstrated the best dual-zone microwave absorption with two strong reflection loss peaks at 5.1 and 10.5 GHz. The corresponding effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) reached 9.0 GHz, which covered part of the S-band and all of the C- and X-bands. These results were attributed to the high saturation magnetization, outstanding complex permeability, and multiple magnetic loss channels of S-NZFO. The H-NZFO sample exhibited excellent absorption capability and matching thickness. At a thickness as low as 1.71 mm, the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of the H-NZFO absorber reached -60.2 dB at 13.1 GHz. The maximum bandwidth corresponding to RL below -10 dB was 4.6 GHz. These results can be attributed to small particle size, high complex permittivity, and multiple dielectric loss channels of H-NZFO. The observed wide effective absorption bandwidth of S-NZFO and strong microwave absorption capability of H-NZFO suggest the potential of both materials as substrates for efficient microwave absorbers in military as well as civilian absorption applications.

Abstract:Magnetic iron particle-doped expanded graphite was prepared by dipping, stirring and standing an expandable graphite for 5-8 h in ferrocene then expanding at 500 degrees C. The surface morphology and composition of the expanded graphite were characterized by SEM and elemental analysis while the magnetization curves, magnetic susceptibility and the attenuation properties for an 8 mm wavelength electromagnetic signal were characterized by a vibration magnetometer. Results showed that ferric oxide was deposited on the surface of the expanded graphite. The average magnetic intensity of the expanded graphite prepared is higher than 8 emu/g under a magnetic field intensity of 0-7. 958 x 105 A/m. The largest attenuation is over-10dB and its mass extinction coefficient is over 1.0 g/m(2) in the wave length of military radar, which is better than a current millimeter wave radar shielding material.

Abstract:It is a major aspect in the field of absorbing materials to obtain composite absorbing materials with prominent absorbing properties through shape design. In this paper, a hollow hexagonal NiFe 2 O 4 /GNs composite absorbing material was prepared by a simple hydrothermal method. The test results show that the minimum reflection loss of the composite can reach −57.4 dB at the low frequency of 6.08 GHz, and the corresponding thickness is 2.9 mm; When the hydrothermal reaction temperature is 200 °C, the maximum effective absorption bandwidth is 3.12 GHz, and the thickness is as thin as 1.1 mm. With the increase of hydrothermal reaction temperature, the morphology of nickel ferrite gradually changed from round rod to hollow hexagonal prism, and the microwave absorption characteristics of the composite also varied and adjusted. This paper provides the preparation process of NiFe 2 O 4 /GNs composites with controllable morphology, and possesses a certain reference for the study of the interaction mechanism of ferrite and graphite nanosheets composite microwave absorbing materials. In addition, the sample has excellent microwave absorption performance in the low-frequency band, while the current wave absorption band of ferrite composites is mainly in the high-frequency band, so the sample has great research and development potential in the field of low-frequency microwave absorbing materials.

Abstract:Nowadays, developing high-performance microwave absorbers with thin thickness, strong absorbing, broad bandwidth and low filler loading is of great importance for solving the problem of electromagnetic pollution. Herein, nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide/nickel-zinc ferrite (NRGO/Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4) composite was synthesized using graphene oxide (GO) as a template by a facile two-step strategy. Results of morphology observations revealed that well-designed entanglement structure consisting of Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 microspheres and crumpled NRGO was clearly observed in the as-prepared NRGO/Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 composite. Moreover, the effects of complexing of NRGO and filler loadings on the microwave absorption properties of NRGO/Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 composite were carefully investigated. It was found that the complexing of NRGO notably enhanced the microwave absorption properties of Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 microspheres. Significantly, the obtained NRGO/Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 composite demonstrated the optimal minimum reflection loss of −63.2 dB with a matching thickness of 2.91 mm in the X-band and effective absorption bandwidth of 5.4 GHz (12.0–17.4 GHz) almost covering the whole Ku-band with a thin thickness of merely 2.0 mm. Furthermore, the relationship between filler loading and refection loss was carefully clarified. Besides, the underlying microwave absorption mechanisms of as-prepared composite were proposed. It was believed that our results could shed light on the design and fabrication of graphene-based magnetic composites as high-efficient microwave absorbers.

Abstract:Fe nanoparticles were loaded on expanded graphite(EG) by liquid reduction to prepare the composites for electromagnetic radiation shielding.We found that during the preparation,EG could enhance the crystallinity of particles distributing on the surface of layers;also,by using seignette salt as a complexing compound,the proportion of ferric oxide and amorphous FeB in composite material decreases,while the resistance to oxidation and ferromagnetic properties increase.The composites with an areal density of 0.096 g/cm2 and 30% Fe mass fraction exhibit the best shielding effectiveness,which could reach 63 to 102 dB at the frequency range of 300 kHz to 1 GHz,while it is improved by 8.5 dB compared with that of pure EG at low frequency.

Abstract:Ni-P alloy was loaded on the surface of expanded graphite(EG) by chemical plating to prepare a Ni-P/EG composite with electromagnetic radiation shielding effectiveness.Scanning electron microscope(SEM) results showed that the Ni-P layer was adhered tightly to the surface of EG.The X-ray diffraction(XRD) patterns and the magnetic measurements of the composite revealed that this chemical plated Ni-P layer is amorphous and had a low saturation magnetization.After crystallized at 500℃ for 3h in N2 atmosphere,the Ni-P layer demonstrates multi-phase components and its saturation magnetization increases and coercivity decreases,presenting soft magnetism.The electromagnetic shielding effectiveness(SE) measured according to the SJ20524-95 standard for crystallized Ni-P/EG composite with areal density of 0.96 kg/m2 was 54 to 75 dB in the range of 300 kHz to 1.5 GHz.
