Abstract:In modern society, the time and duration of sleep on workdays are primarily determined by external factors, e.g., the alarm clock. This can lead to a misalignment of the intrinsically determined sleep timing, which is dependent on the individual chronotype, resulting in reduced sleep quality. Although this is highly relevant given the high incidence of sleep disorders, little is known about the effect of this misalignment on sleep architecture. Using Fitbit trackers and questionnaire surveys, our study aims to elucidate sleep timing, sleep architecture, and subjective sleep quality in young healthy adults (n = 59) under real-life conditions (average of 82.4 ± 9.7 days). Correlations between variables were calculated to identify the direction of relationships. On workdays, the midpoint of sleep was earlier, the sleep duration was shorter, and tiredness upon waking was higher than on free days. A higher discrepancy between sleep duration on workdays and free days was associated with a lower stability of the circadian rhythm of REM sleep and also with a higher fragmentation of REM sleep. Similarly, a higher tiredness upon waking on free days, thus under intrinsically determined sleep timing conditions, was associated with a lower proportion and a higher fragmentation of REM sleep. This suggests that the misalignment between extrinsically and intrinsically determined sleep timing affects the architecture of sleep stages, particularly REM sleep, which is closely connected to sleep quality.

Abstract:Abstract Young adults are vulnerable to the consequences of disturbed sleep from insufficient sleep, shift work and sleep disorders. The impact of these causes of disturbed sleep on perceived work performance and quality of life (QOL) in young adults is unclear. This study sought to investigate these associations in a community sample of 22-year-old adults. Participants studied (n=565, 53% female) were a subset of the Raine Study. All were employed and provided information on sleep disorders (obstructive sleep apnoea by polysomnography and insomnia and restless legs syndrome symptoms by validated questionnaires), shift work status, habitual sleep duration, QOL (Short Form (SF) 12) and perceived work performance (categorical response: perform better, same or worse than most workers). Multinomial and linear regression models adjusted for sex, comorbidities and work hours were used to examine the associations between disturbed sleep with work performance and QOL, respectively. In total 25% of participants had a sleep disorder, 29% were shift workers, and 31% had insufficient sleep (<6 hours). Presence of a sleep disorder was associated with poorer perceived work performance (OR, 2.27; 95%CI, 1.3 – 4.1). Sleep disorders were also associated with significantly lower SF-12 mental (β, -4.19; 95%CI, -5.92 to -2.45, p<0.001) and physical (β, -1.56; 95%CI, -2.70 to -0.42, p<0.008) component scores. Shift work and insufficient sleep were not associated with either perceived work performance or QOL. Identifying and treating sleep disorders in young adults may be important given its negative association with perceived work performance and QOL.

Abstract:Students who work during the school year face the potential of sleep deprivation and its effects, since they have to juggle between school and work responsibilities along with social life. This may leave them with less time left for sleep than their nonworking counterparts. Chronotype is a factor that may exert an influence on the sleep of student workers. Also, light and social zeitgebers may have an impact on the sleep-related problems of this population. This study aimed to document sleep, light exposure patterns, social rhythms, and work-related fatigue of student workers aged 19-21 yrs and explore possible associations with chronotype. A total of 88 student workers (mean ± SD: 20.18 ± .44 yrs of age; 36 males/52 females) wore an actigraph (Actiwatch-L; Mini-Mitter/Respironics,Bend, OR) and filled out the Social Rhythm Metric for two consecutive weeks during the school year. Also, they completed the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Occupational Fatigue Exhaustion/Recovery Scale (OFER). Repeated and one-way analyses of variance (ANOVAs), Pearson's chi-square tests, and correlation coefficients were used for statistical comparisons. Subjects slept an average of 06:28 h/night. Actigraphic sleep parameters, such as sleep duration, sleep efficiency, wake after sleep onset, and sleep latency, did not differ between chronotypes. Results also show that evening types (n = 17) presented lower subjective sleep quality than intermediate types (n = 58) and morning types (n = 13). Moreover, evening types reported higher levels of chronic work-related fatigue, exhibited less regular social rhythms, and were exposed to lower levels of light during their waking hours (between 2 and 11 h after wake time) as compared to intermediate types and morning types. In addition, exposure to light intensities between 100 and 500 lux was lower in evening types than in intermediate types and morning types. However, bright light exposure (≥ 1000 lux) did not differ between chronotypes. In conclusion, results suggest that student workers may constitute a high-risk population for sleep deprivation. Evening types seemed to cope less well with sleep deprivation, reporting poorer sleep quality and higher levels of work-related fatigue than intermediate types and morning types. The higher chronic work-related fatigue of evening types may be linked to their attenuated level of light exposure and weaker social zeitgebers. These results add credence to the hypothesis that eveningness entails a higher risk of health-impairing behaviors.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Stress in interpersonal relationships has been related to adverse mental health outcomes, however, fewer studies have examined associations with physical health, particularly sleep. To date, most studies rely on retrospective reports of stress and sleep measured at a single timepoint, and do not examine multiple types of relationship stress. We tested whether daily stress with family, partner/spouse, and/or friends predicted shorter total sleep time (TST), lower sleep efficiency (SE), and/or later sleep midpoint via ecological momentary assessment (EMA) among young adults. Methods Participants were 293 young adults (21-30 y/o; 64% female; 5% Asian, 25% Black, 5% Biracial or Multiracial, 1% Other race, 64% White) reporting regular alcohol use from two studies with a shared assessment battery and up to 18-day EMA protocol. Participants reported daily sleep (TST [hours], SE, and midpoint, calculated from sleep diary reports), cannabis use (yes/no), alcohol use (total number of drinks), and stress with family, spouse/partner, and friends (coded as: 0=not at all, 1=somewhat, 2=moderately/very much). We fit generalized linear mixed effects models and estimated within-subject and between-subject associations between each stress variable and sleep outcome, respectively, adjusting for time-invariant (age, past-year household income, assigned sex) and time-variant covariates (weekend, cannabis use, alcohol use, pre- vs. post-COVID-19 pandemic). Results Participants completed a median of 17 EMA daily records (range: 1-18). Considering between-person effects, participants who reported feeling somewhat stressed with family [B(SE)=-.66(.32), p=0.04] or partner/spouse [B(SE)=-.63(.35), p=0.07] reported lower average TST over the EMA protocol. No associations emerged with experiencing moderately/very much stress in any relationship, nor for SE or midpoint outcomes. Results did not suggest a within-person effect of any type of daily relationship stress on sleep that night. Conclusion Among a well-characterized sample with up to 18 days of EMA data, reporting some stress in family and partner/spouse relationships predicted lower TST, relative to peers without stress in these relationships. Results may suggest that cumulative stress over time may be more detrimental for sleep than acute day-to-day stressors. When intervening on sleep, clinicians should also consider relationship stress, which is amenable to evidence-based interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Abstract:Circadian rhythms are maintained by a complex "system of systems" that continuously coordinates biological processes with each other and the environment. Although humans predominantly entrain to solar time, individual persons vary in their precise behavioral timing due to endogenous and exogenous factors. Endogenous differences in the timing of individual circadian rhythms relative to a common environmental cue are known as chronotypes, ranging from earlier than average (Morningness) to later than average (Eveningness). Furthermore, individual behavior is often constrained by social constructs such as the 7-day week, and the "sociogenic" impact our social calendar has on our behavioral rhythms is likely modified by chronotype. Our aim in this study was to identify and characterize differences in sleep and rest-activity rhythms (RAR) between weekends and weekdays and between-chronotypes. Male volunteers (n = 24, mean age = 23.46 y) were actigraphically monitored for 4 weeks to derive objective behavioral measures of sleep and RARs. Chronotype was assessed through self-report on the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire. Sleep characteristics were derived using Actiware; daily rest-activity rhythms were modeled using a basic 3-parameter cosinor function. We observed that both Eveningness and Morningness Chronotypes were more active and slept later on the weekends than on weekdays. Significant between-chronotype differences in sleep timing and duration were observed within individual days of the week, especially during transitions between weekends and the workweek. Moreover, chronotypes significantly varied in their weekly rhythms: e.g. Morningness Chronotypes generally shifted their sleep duration, timing and quality across work/rest transitions quicker than Eveningness Chronotypes. Although our results should be interpreted with caution due to the limitations of our cosinor model and a homogenous cohort, they reinforce a growing body of evidence that day of the week, chronotype and their interactions must be accounted for in observational studies of human behavior, especially when circadian rhythms are of interest.

Abstract:Introduction: Converging evidence suggests that urban living is associated with an increased likelihood of developing mental health and sleep problems. Although these aspects have been investigated in separate streams of research, stress, autonomic reactivity and circadian misalignment can be hypothesized to play a prominent role in the causal pathways underlining the complex relationship between the urban environment and these two health dimensions. This study aims at quantifying the momentary impact of environmental stressors on increased autonomic reactivity and circadian rhythm, and thereby on mood and anxiety symptoms and sleep quality in the context of everyday urban living. Method: The present article reports the protocol for a feasibility study that aims at assessing the daily environmental and mobility exposures of 40 participants from the urban area of Jerusalem over 7 days. Every participant will carry a set of wearable sensors while being tracked through space and time with GPS receivers. Skin conductance and heart rate variability will be tracked to monitor participants' stress responses and autonomic reactivity, whereas electroencephalographic signal will be used for sleep quality tracking. Light exposure, actigraphy and skin temperature will be used for ambulatory circadian monitoring. Geographically explicit ecological momentary assessment (GEMA) will be used to assess participants' perception of the environment, mood and anxiety symptoms, sleep quality and vitality. For each outcome variable (sleep quality and mental health), hierarchical mixed models including random effects at the individual level will be used. In a separate analysis, to control for potential unobserved individual-level confounders, a fixed effect at the individual level will be specified for case-crossover analyses (comparing each participant to oneself). Conclusion: Recent developments in wearable sensing methods, as employed in our study or with even more advanced methods reviewed in the Discussion, make it possible to gather information on the functioning of neuro-endocrine and circadian systems in a real-world context as a way to investigate the complex interactions between environmental exposures, behavior and health. Our work aims to provide evidence on the health effects of urban stressors and circadian disruptors to inspire potential interventions, municipal policies and urban planning schemes aimed at addressing those factors.

Abstract:Social stressors at work may result in long-term health impairments if recovery is insufficient. In the present psychophysiological field study, we tested whether the inability to psychologically detach from work issues mediates the negative effect of social stressors at work on sleep during weekends. Sixty full-time employees participated in the study. Daily assessment included diaries on psychological detachment and continuous ambulatory actigraphy to assess psychophysiological indicators of sleep. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that enduring social stressors at work were negatively related with psychological detachment on Sunday evening and negatively related with various sleep indicators on Sunday night. Furthermore, psychological detachment from work on Sunday evening partially mediated the effect of social stressors at work on two sleep indicators. Social stressors at work may threaten recovery processes just before the working week starts.

Abstract:Sleep deprivation is an often hidden problem in working adults. In this study, we evaluated self-regulation processes contributing to poor sleep patterns of full-time office employees. We investigated whether work-related demands and prioritizing sleep (in relation to other activities) predicted sleep behaviours over an 11-day period. Seventy-three adults in New Zealand completed online measures, including the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire, a measure of sleep prioritization, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Mixed-model analyses of daily data revealed that higher sleep prioritization and positive work-related emotions during a workday predicted better sleep quality that night. Cognitive demands on a workday predicted a later bedtime that night, whereas emotional demands predicted an earlier bedtime (but also an earlier waking time). Regression analyses revealed that when controlling for baseline levels of each dependent measure, pre-sleep arousal predicted fewer hours of sleep and greater sleep difficulty whereas sleep prioritization predicted a faster time getting to sleep, longer sleep and less sleep difficulty. High priority for sleep and positive emotions at work may promote sleep quality, whereas cognitive and emotional demands, or pre-sleep arousal may disrupt sleep patterns. These findings point to sleep prioritization and cognitive-emotional self-regulation skills as potential targets for work-based interventions aimed at promoting sleep.

Abstract:BackgroundChronotype manifestation often has a broad influence on sleep quality. One possible explanation for daytime impairments in evening types is the concept of “social jetlag”. Social jetlag is caused by an incompatibility between circadian preference and the socially accepted rhythm. This can be declared as a social stressor.ObjectiveThe association between chronotype, stress coping, and sleep quality was assessed in a pilot study.Materials and methodsA total of 75 female adults aged 20–41 years participated in the study and completely answered all questions. Various questionnaires including sociodemographic data, information about sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI), chronotype (morningness–eveningness questionnaire, MEQ), and stress coping (Stress Coping Style Questionnaire, SVF78) were applied.ResultsHeightened use of maladaptive coping strategies is associated with a reduction in sleep quality. Chronotypes did not differ in terms of sleep quality and the coping strategies used.ConclusionMaladaptive coping strategy use seems to have a negative influence on sleep quality. Preventive education in adaptive stress coping strategies and avoidance of maladaptive stress coping thus seems useful to reduce these adverse influences on sleep quality.

Abstract:Background: There is considerable evidence supporting the elevated risk of mental health problems in individuals with evening chronotype relative to those with morning or intermediate chronotypes. Recent data, however, suggest that this risk may be explained, at least partially, by poor sleep quality. Methods: This study aimed to further clarify the roles of chronotype and sleep quality in mental health outcomes (depression, anxiety, stress) in young individuals (18–40 years) living in the UK (n = 185) or Germany (n = 209). Results: Consistent with our recent observations in a comparable North Indian sample, we found that poor quality of sleep had significantly positive associations with adverse mental health outcomes both in the UK and Germany-based samples. Significant associations between evening chronotype and poor mental health were also evident, but these associations were fully mediated by poor quality of sleep in both samples. Conclusions: These observations suggest that efforts to identify sleep disruption in a timely manner and promotion of good sleep may prevent mental health problems, especially in individuals with evening chronotype and other known risks for mental disorders.

Psychological distress and trajectories of sleep duration among Australian adolescents: a prospective cohort study

Abstract:Objectives This study investigated the association between indicators of psychological distress and well-being and trajectories of sleep duration among a cohort of Australian adolescents. Design A prospective cohort of adolescents was followed over 27 weeks (8 November 2019–14 May 2020). Data on sleep duration and psychological distress were collected via smartphones, based on ecological momentary assessments. Setting Sydney population catchment, Australia. Participants Young people aged 13–19 years were recruited via social media (Instagram or Facebook). Primary outcome measure Self-reported sleep duration in the past 24 hours. Sleep duration was dichotomised into 'less than 8 hours' and 'at least 8 hours', to represent those participants not meeting the recommended minimum amount of daily sleep. Results Participants with high psychological distress had higher odds of sleeping less than 8 hours (OR 1.51 (95% CI 1.17 to 1.96)), compared with those with low psychological distress. Social media use (OR 1.34 (95% CI 1.01 to 1.79)) and longer periods spent on homework (OR 1.37, (95% CI 1.07 to 1.75)) were also associated with a sleep duration of less than 8 hours. Also, decreasing sleep trajectories were associated with increased psychological distress (β=0.069, (95% CI –0.010 to 0.149)) and increased homework hours (β=0.078 (95% CI 0.036 to 0.120)). Conclusion Findings highlight the adverse impact of psychological distress and high levels of social media use on sleep duration among adolescents. Longitudinal studies with longer follow-up periods are warranted to further explore the temporal associations between sleep duration and different health outcomes among varying populations.

Abstract:Sleep is functional for individual and societal well-being, with partial sleep deprivation associated with adverse health and safety consequences. Surprisingly, sleep is absent from work—life balance debates and has remained largely under-researched by sociologists. This article examines the relationship of insufficient sleep duration with occupational circumstances and family responsibilities, providing a contribution to the examination of the health consequences of working patterns in the UK. We analyse time use data from 2000, focusing on a sub-sample of workers aged 20—60 years ( n = 2882). Nested logistic regression modelling is used to identify the segments of the working population getting a short sleep duration that if sustained may have negative health outcomes. An inverse relationship between working hours and sleep duration is found, which is stronger for men than women. Shift work and social class are also significant predictors of short sleep for men.
Adolescent sleep, distress, and technology use: weekday versus weekend

Abstract:Background: In adolescents, technology use at bedtime is linked to disrupted sleep and psychological distress. Adolescents are known to sleep later on weekends compared to weekdays but whether this leads to greater technology use, and, hence, additional psychological distress is not known. At greater risk maybe adolescents with a late compared to early chronotype, that is a preference for late versus early sleep onset and offset times. Method: Self-reported measures of sleep timing, chronotype (early, neither early nor late, late), technology medium (social media/texting, TV/streaming, and gaming), and psychological distress (DASS-21) were collected from 462 students attending one Australian high school. Results: Technology use at bedtime was greater on weekends and especially in adolescents with a late chronotype. Social media/texting on weekends was predictive of delayed sleep onset times (β = .120), and shorter sleep (β = -.172). Shorter sleep on weekdays but not on weekends was associated with greater psychological distress. Technology medium and chronotype were not predictive of psychological distress. Conclusions: This study confirmed that technology use and its impact on sleep differed on weekdays compared to weekends and that a late chronotype was associated with greater technology use. However, neither technology medium nor chronotype was found to affect psychological distress. While greater autonomy may be granted to adolescents over the weekend regarding sleep behaviour, young people, parents, and clinicians should be mindful of the link between technology use and sleep.

Abstract:Abstract Study Objectives There is mixed evidence regarding associations of sleep duration with academic functioning in adolescents and a lack of research on other sleep dimensions, particularly using objective sleep measures. We examined associations of multiple actigraphic sleep dimensions with academic functioning among adolescents. Methods Data were from the sleep sub-study of the age 15 wave of the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (n = 774–782; 52% female), a national, diverse sample of teens. Adolescents wore wrist-actigraphs for ~1 week and completed a survey reporting academic performance and school-related behavioral problems. Regression models assessed whether average sleep duration, timing, maintenance efficiency, and SD-variability were associated with self-reported academic functioning in cross-sectional analyses adjusted for demographic characteristics, depressive symptoms, and anxious symptoms. Results Later sleep timing (hours) and greater sleep variability (SD-hours) were associated with poorer academic outcomes, including sleep onset variability with higher odds of receiving a D or lower (OR = 1.29), sleep onset (β = −.07), sleep offset (β = −.08), and sleep duration variability (β = −.08) with fewer A grades, sleep offset with lower GPA (β = −.07), sleep offset (OR = 1.11), sleep duration variability (OR = 1.31), and sleep onset variability (OR = 1.42) with higher odds of being suspended or expelled in the past 2 years, and sleep duration variability with greater trouble at school (β = .13). Sleep duration, sleep maintenance efficiency, and sleep regularity index were not associated with academic functioning. Conclusions Later sleep timing and greater sleep variability are risk factors for certain academic problems among adolescents. Promoting sufficient, regular sleep timing across the week may improve adolescent academic functioning.

Abstract:Social jetlag, a mismatch between internal biological time and social schedules, and a later timing of the midpoint of sleep on work-free days as an indicator of the circadian phase of entrainment (late chronotype), may be factors associated with poor quality sleep. This study examined the association of social jetlag and chronotype with subjective sleep quality ratings in a healthy young adult cohort and interrogated the moderating effects of sex and age on these associations. A total of 1322 participants aged 18 to 40 completed the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire. Later timing of midsleep on “free” days (an indicator of chronotype) had a small-to-medium association with poorer subjective sleep quality, independently of sex and age (rho = 0.212, P < 0.001). Greater social jetlag had a small association with poorer subjective sleep quality ratings (rho = 0.077), and this effect was moderated by sex with there being a relationship between social jetlag and sleep quality only in males. Social jetlag did not mediate the relationship between chronotype and sleep quality. These results indicate differential relationships of the chronotype and social jetlag with subjective sleep quality and indicate that sex is a moderating factor for sleep quality’s relationship with social jetlag, but not for the association between sleep quality and chronotype.
Country differences in nocturnal sleep variability: Observations from a large-scale, long-term sleep wearable study

Abstract:Study objectives Country or regional differences in sleep duration are well-known, but few large-scale studies have specifically evaluated sleep variability, either across the work week, or in terms of differences in weekday and weekend sleep. Methods Sleep measures obtained over 50 million night's sleep, from ∼220,000 wearable device users in 35 countries were analysed. Each person contributed an average of ∼242 nights of data. Multiple regression was used to assess the impact country of residence had on a sleep duration, timing, efficiency, weekday sleep variability, weekend sleep extension and social jetlag. Results Nocturnal sleep was shorter and had a later onset in Asia than other regions. Despite this, sleep efficiency was lower and weekday sleep duration was higher. Weekend sleep extension was longer in Europe and the USA than in Asia, and was only partially related to weekday sleep duration. There were also cross-country differences in social jetlag although the regional differences were less distinct than for weekend sleep extension. Conclusions In addition to regional differences in sleep duration, cross-country differences in sleep variability and weekend sleep extension suggest that using the latter as an indicator of sleep debt may need to be reconsidered. In countries exhibiting both short sleep and high weekday sleep variability, a culturally different means of coping with inadequate sleep is likely. Country or region differences in culture, particularly those related to work, merit closer examination as factors influencing the variability in normative sleep patterns around the world.

Abstract:Introduction Sleep deprivation is studied in medical staff, as it is a target group more exposed to chronic lack of sleep compared to the normal population.Chronic sleep deprivation has an important impact in the lifestyle of health workers and in their productivity Objectives The study aims to examine the impact of sleep deprivation on medical staff, who work night-shifts and / or 24 hours on the symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress and quality of life. Methods This is a quantitative, cross-sectional study. The research instruments used are two: the DASS-42 questionnaire for measuring the level of symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress and the quality of life questionnaire (WHOQOL-Bref ), which was validated before the study. In the study sample participated N = 199 medical staff (primary doctor, resident, nurse) from several specialties. Inclusive criteria are: medical staff, who work night-shifts and / or 24 hours; age 23 - 67 years; have not been previously diagnosed with anxiety disorder and episodes of depressive disorder. Results Refering to the DASS-42 scoring, the symptoms of depression in the medical staff are: normal 64.8%, mild 8.5%, moderate 21.1%, severe 4.5% and extremely severe 1%. Refering to the points collected from the DASS-42 questions on the symptoms of anxiety in medical staff, it results: normal 53.3%, mild 8%, moderate 17.1%, severe 14.1% and extremely severe 7.5%. Based on the points collected from the DASS-42 questions on stress symptoms in medical staff, it results: normal 54.3%, mild 18.6%, moderate 17.1%, severe 9% and extremely severe 1%. Also, the lower the level of stress, anxiety and depression the higher the quality of life. (p.01, p.05). Total WHO- Quality of life (F = 3.447, p≤.05) and physical health (F = 6.482, p≤.05) show significant differences between the educational level, where it is higher among medical staff with postgraduate education. Conclusions Working night-shifts and/or 24 hours affects the mild and moderate onset of symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress. The level of stress symptoms is perceived higher in females. The overall quality of life is perceived as average according to the Likert scale. Sleep deprivation affects free time. Medical staff have a restricted free time.The level of anxiety, depression and has a direct impact in the quality of life. The overall quality of life and physical health are rated higher in medical staff with postgraduate education. Disclosure of Interest None Declared
