Abstract:To combat the crisis of today’s synthetic polymers arising from unsustainable production and disposal, it is essential for the synthetic polymer community to reshape the current polymer industry with sustainable polymers. As an emerging class of sustainable polymers, the development of chemically depolymerizable polymers (CDPs), which can undergo closed-loop depolymerization/repolymerization cycles to reproduce virgin polymers without the loss of properties from recovered monomers, offers an ideal solution to preserve finite natural resources, provides a feasible solution to the end-of-life issue of polymer waste, and thereby establishes a circular materials economy. However, two grand key challenges have been encountered in the establishment of practically useful CDPs: how to balance polymerization and depolymerization ability and how to unify conflicted depolymerizability and physical properties. Accordingly, this critical review article presents our vision for summarizing feasible strategies to overcome the above two significant challenges and the design principles for constructing an ideal CDP by highlighting selected major progress made in this rapidly expanding field.

Abstract:Innovations in dynamic polymeric materials offer prospects to improve the circularity and lower the environmental impact of the modern polymer economy. These materials are also beginning to blur the distinction between re‐use and recycling methods since the bulk material properties of the material may be rationally changed after applying a stimulus or performing a controlled chemical reaction. In this Perspective, we propose that dynamic polymers denote a unique class of versatile post‐consumer polymer waste, which shares similarities to emergent upcycling approaches while also offering additional opportunities within more classical recycling schemes. A brief overview of stimuli‐responsive polymers is presented where illustrative examples are discussed within the context of developing practical materials. Dynamic covalent polymeric materials are then highlighted, along with emerging techniques such as polymer editing, with a focus on recent reports demonstrating rational manipulation of bulk material properties. Finally, we discuss these examples alongside modern recycling methods and explore how dynamic polymers could perform in this sphere.

Abstract:Dynamic covalent polymer networks have long been recognized. With the initial focus on the unintended impact of dynamic covalent linkages on the viscoelasticity of commercial rubbers, efforts in modern times have transitioned into designing dynamic covalent polymer networks with unique adaptive properties. Whereas self‐healing and thermoset reprocessing have been the primary motivations for studying dynamic covalent polymer networks, the recent discovery of the vitrimeric rheological behavior and solid‐state plasticity for this type of material have opened up new opportunities in material innovations. This, coupled with the revelation of the dynamic characteristics of commercially relevant polymer building blocks such as esters and urethanes, suggests a promising future for this class of materials.
Disequilibrating Dynamic Polymers for Spontaneous Recyclability

Abstract:Chemical recycling of synthetic polymers is key to our future circular plastics economy1–3. Current chemical solutions rely on either catalyst design or introducing weak bonds.4–6 The former approach doesn’t tackle the thermodynamic trap of conventional plastics, while the latter usually compromises materials performances. Despite recent advances in ring-strain engineering of lactone-based polymers allowing catalyst-enabled recyclability,1,6,7 polymer-to-monomer recycling processes under mild, waste-free, and cost-affordable conditions remain a formidable challenge. Here, we report an intrinsically recyclable polymer disequilibrated by kinetic control of bulk reconstruction mediated with dynamic bonds, enabling spontaneous polymer-to-monomer conversion by direct solid-to-solid (crystal) transition. The key feature of the system is to couple two types of dynamic chemical equilibria, i.e., noncovalent self-assembly of side-chains and dynamic covalent polymerization of mainchains. We discovered that controlling the sidechain H-bond stacking geometry could be used to spatially separate the polymerizing moieties of monomers in the solid state and bias the monomer/polymer equilibrium toward the direction of depolymerization. As a result, a semi-crystalline, Nylon-like, and easy-to-prepare polymeric material can be spontaneously recycled into crystalline monomers using a mild thermal activation process (120°C), featuring quantitative recycling yield, high monomer purity (over 90%) at low-cost while avoiding the use of any solvent or catalyst during recycling. Life-cycle assessment shows a remarkably advantageous environmental footprint of this technology compared with solvent-based chemical recycling routes. These findings offer a supramolecular solution towards cost-effective closed-loop recycling of covalent polymers.

Abstract:Dynamic covalent polymer networks (DCPN) have historically attracted attention for their unique roles in chemical recycling and self-healing, which are both relevant for sustainable societal development. Efforts in these directions have intensified in the past decade with notable progress in newly discovered dynamic covalent chemistry, fundamental material concepts, and extension toward emerging applications including energy and electronic devices. Beyond that, the values of DCPN in discovering/designing functional properties not offered by classical thermoplastic and thermoset polymers have recently gained traction. In particular, the dynamic bond exchangeability of DCPN has shown unparalleled design versatility in various areas including shape-shifting materials/devices, artificial muscles, and microfabrication. Going beyond this basic bond exchangeability, various molecular mechanisms to manipulate network topologies (topological transformation) have led to opportunities to program polymers, with notable concepts such as living networks and topological isomerization. In this review, we provide an overview of the above progress with particular focuses on molecular design strategies for the exploitation of functional material properties. Based on this, we point out the remaining issues and offer perspectives on how this class of materials can shape the future in ways that are complementary with classical thermoplastic and thermoset polymers.

Abstract:Plastics have revolutionized modern life, but have created a global waste crisis driven by our reliance and demand for low-cost, disposable materials. New approaches are vital to address challenges related to plastics waste heterogeneity, along with the property reductions induced by mechanical recycling. Chemical recycling and upcycling of polymers may enable circularity through separation strategies, chemistries that promote closed-loop recycling inherent to macromolecular design, and transformative processes that shift the life-cycle landscape. Polymer upcycling schemes may enable lower-energy pathways and minimal environmental impacts compared with traditional mechanical and chemical recycling. The emergence of industrial adoption of recycling and upcycling approaches is encouraging, solidifying the critical role for these strategies in addressing the fate of plastics and driving advances in next-generation materials design.

Abstract:Due to their remarkable features of lightweight, high strength, stiffness, high-temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance, carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) are extensively used in sports equipment, vehicles, aircraft, windmill blades, and other sectors. The urging need to develop a resource-saving and environmentally responsible society requires the recycling of CFRPs. Traditional CFRPs, on the other hand, are difficult to recycle due to the permanent covalent crosslinking of polymer matrices. The combination of covalent adaptable networks (CANs) with carbon fibers (CFs) marks a new development path for closed-loop recyclable CFRPs and polymer resins. In this review, we summarize the most recent developments of closed-loop recyclable CFRPs from the unique paradigm of dynamic crosslinking polymers, CANs. These sophisticated materials with diverse functions, oriented towards CFs recycling and resin sustainability, are further categorized into several active domains of dynamic covalent bonds, including ester bonds, imine bonds, disulfide bonds, boronic ester bonds, and acetal linkages, etc. Finally, the possible strategies for the future design of recyclable CFPRs by combining dynamic covalent chemistry innovation with materials interface science are proposed.

Abstract:Dynamically crosslinked polymers (DCPs) have gained significant attention owing to their applications in fabricating (re)processable, recyclable, and self‐healable thermosets, which hold great promise in addressing ecological issues such as plastic pollution and resource scarcity. However, the current research predominantly focuses on redefining and/or manipulating their geometries while replicating their bulk properties. Given the inherent design flexibility of dynamic covalent networks, DCPs also exhibit a remarkable potential for various novel applications through post‐synthesis reprogramming their properties. In this review, we present the recent advancements in strategies that enable DCPs to transform their bulk properties after synthesis. The underlying mechanisms and associated material properties are overviewed mainly through three distinct strategies, namely latent catalysts, material‐growth, and topology isomerizable networks. Furthermore, the mutual relationship and impact of these strategies when integrated within one material system are also discussed. Finally, the application prospects and relevant issues necessitating further investigation, along with the potential solutions are analyzed. This article is protected by copyright. Closed-loop chemical recycling of thermosetting polymers and their applications: a review

Abstract:Conventional thermosets are infusible and insoluble covalently cross-linked polymers which are difficult to be recycled and reused when discarded. Recent years witnessed development of closed-loop recycling of novel thermosets as well as their applications in composites, 3D printing materials, etc. through degradation technique innovation and reversible chemistries (or dynamic chemistries). In this review, the approaches of achieving closed-loop recycling of novel thermosets and their downstream materials are divided into two categories. One is to hydrolyze the thermosets in an acidic, alkaline or catalyst solution, and then recover the monomers or oligomers which can be reused to prepare thermosets or their functional materials. Another is to de-cross-link and re-cross-link the thermosets through the exchange reaction of dynamic bonds. In recent years, various cleavable (or dynamic) bonds such as ester bond, acetal linkage, Schiff base structure, disulfide bond, hexahydrotriazine structure, boronic ester bond, and so on have been developed for the preparation of closed-loop recyclable thermosets, and their closed-loop recycling mechanisms have also been fully demonstrated. By adopting the strategy of closed-loop recycling through hydrolysis, the recovered thermosets have the same structure and properties as the original resin. However, the degradation process strongly depends on the wettability of the resin, the pH of the solution or catalyst, and how to improve monomer recovery (whether it can reach ~100%) remains a challenge. When the thermosets are closed-loop recycled through dynamic reaction, the recovery rate is ideally 100%, however, the recycling must be carried out at high temperature, and the performance of the recovered resin will inevitably be lost compared with the original thermosets.

Abstract:Recycled plastics are low-value commodities due to residual impurities and the degradation of polymer properties with each cycle of re-use. Plastics that undergo reversible polymerization allow high-value monomers to be recovered and re-manufactured into pristine materials, which should incentivize recycling in closed-loop life cycles. However, monomer recovery is often costly, incompatible with complex mixtures and energy-intensive. Here, we show that next-generation plastics—polymerized using dynamic covalent diketoenamine bonds—allow the recovery of monomers from common additives, even in mixed waste streams. Poly(diketoenamine)s 'click' together from a wide variety of triketones and aromatic or aliphatic amines, yielding only water as a by-product. Recovered monomers can be re-manufactured into the same polymer formulation, without loss of performance, as well as other polymer formulations with differentiated properties. The ease with which poly(diketoenamine)s can be manufactured, used, recycled and re-used—without losing value—points to new directions in designing sustainable polymers with minimal environmental impact.

Abstract:The extensive utilization of plastic, as a symbol of modern technological society, has consumed enormous amounts of finite and non-renewable fossil resources and produced huge amounts of plastic wastes in the land or ocean, and thus recycling and reuse of the plastic wastes have great ecological and economic benefits. Closed-loop recyclable polymers with inherent recyclability can be readily depolymerized into monomers with high selectivity and purity and repolymerized into polymers with the same performance. They are deemed to be the next generation of recyclable polymers and have captured great and increasing attention from academia and industry. Herein, we provide an overview of readily closed-loop recyclable polymers based on monomer and polymer design and no-other-reactant-involved reversible ring-opening and addition polymerization reactions. The state-of-the-art of circular polymers is separately summarized and discussed based on different monomers, including lactones, thiolactones, cyclic carbonates, hindered olefins, cycloolefins, thermally labile olefin comonomers, cyclic disulfides, cyclic (dithio) acetals, lactams, Diels-Alder addition monomers, Michael addition monomers, anhydride-secondary amide monomers, and cyclic anhydride-aldehyde monomers, and polymers with activatable end groups. The polymerization and depolymerization mechanisms are clearly disclosed, and the evolution of the monomer structure, the polymerization and depolymerization conditions, the corresponding polymerization yield, molecular weight, performance of the polymers, monomer recovery, and depolymerization equipment are also systematically summarized and discussed. Furthermore, the challenges and future prospects are also highlighted.
Circularity in mixed-plastic chemical recycling enabled by variable rates of polydiketoenamine hydrolysis

Abstract:Footwear, carpet, automotive interiors, and multilayer packaging are examples of products manufactured from several types of polymers whose inextricability poses substantial challenges for recycling at the end of life. Here, we show that chemical circularity in mixed-polymer recycling becomes possible by controlling the rates of depolymerization of polydiketoenamines (PDK) over several orders of magnitude through molecular engineering. Stepwise deconstruction of mixed-PDK composites, laminates, and assemblies is chemospecific, allowing a prescribed subset of monomers, fillers, and additives to be recovered under pristine condition at each stage of the recycling process. We provide a theoretical framework to understand PDK depolymerization via acid-catalyzed hydrolysis and experimentally validate trends predicted for the rate-limiting step. The control achieved by PDK resins in managing chemical and material entropy points to wide-ranging opportunities for pairing circular design with sustainable manufacturing.

Functional polymer materials based on dynamic covalent chemistry

Abstract:In the past two decades, dynamic covalent chemistry has been greatly developed, which is mainly reflected in two aspects: 1. new dynamic covalent bonds (DCBs) are continuously discovered; 2. various DCBs have been introduced into polymer materials for different functions. These functional polymer materials have brought new opportunities for sustainable development. In this review, we provide an overview of various functions endowed by DCBs in polymer materials, including self-healing, chemical recycling, and shape controlling. Particularly, we pay much attention to the three-dimensional (3D) shape reconfiguration/programming, surface patterning, and reversible actuation. In addition, we also give the current issues, challenges, and opportunities on DCBs-containing materials and point out its developing directions in the future.

Abstract:An all‐around monomer, anthracene‐substituted cyclopentene, is proposed for producing chemically recyclable polymers with damage‐reporting and self‐healing capabilities by combining two orthogonal reversible chemistries. The polymers exhibit comparable hardness and elastic modulus to engineering plastics, along with multiple shape programming behaviors. Excellent chemical recyclability to monomers is also accomplished, even from mixed plastic wastes. Chemical recycling to monomer (CRM) provides an ideal solution for reducing plastic waste and achieving a circular polymer economy. Cyclopentene (CP) and its derivatives are representative molecules that exemplify an efficient CRM process under mild conditions. However, most CP‐based polymers possess limited thermal and mechanical properties, constraining their potential applications. Herein, new CP‐based polymers with superior thermo‐mechanical properties and autonomous functions are proposed by integrating anthracene as a dynamic functional motif. Anthracenes not only serve as supramolecular cross‐linkages through strong π–π interactions but also form stronger chemical ones under UVA light irradiation, enhancing thermo‐mechanical properties. Furthermore, damage‐reporting, self‐healing, and local shape reprogramming capabilities are accomplished by utilizing the reversible nature of photodimerized anthracene. A mild and orthogonal depolymerization condition for the CP‐based polymers facilitates efficient monomer recovery even from mixed plastic wastes. This work presents a simple yet effective strategy to expand the usability of chemically recyclable polymers and contribute to a closed‐loop polymer economy.

Abstract:The accumulation of discarded petroleum-based plastics causes serious environmental crises. Currently, recyclable polymers with neutrality in thermodynamics, such as polyesters, polycarbonates, and polyolefins, have been developed as promising alternatives to traditional petroleum-based polymers. However, the chemical recycle of these polymers usually requires high energy input and expensive catalysts. Dynamic covalent bonds, such as thioester and disulfide bonds, have emerged as building blocks for constructing recyclable polymers that can be rapidly degraded/recycled under mild conditions. In this review, we introduce representative studies on recyclable polythioesters and polydisulfides with respect to their synthetic strategies, thermodynamic manipulation, physicochemical properties, and preliminary applications. We also highlight the important role of kinetic factors played in the design of recyclable polymers. Finally, major challenges, perspectives, and future opportunities in the synthesis and applications of polythioesters/polydisulfides are discussed.

Abstract:New materials which have the potential to reversible topology rearrangement based on the dynamic covalent bonds are continually emerging. In the past decade, the research on dynamic covalent polymers has achieved notable progress in the preparation and proof-of-concept applications. Dynamic covalent polymer is a type of polymer material containing dynamic covalent bond in molecular chains. The bond energy of dynamic covalent bonds is lower than that of stable covalent bonds, but higher than that of non-covalent bonds, such as ionic bonds, coordination bonds, hydrogen bonds, or van der Waals forces. The reversible reaction can be triggered by external stimulus such as light, heat, force, and pH, while polymers with dynamic covalent bonds can maintain structural stability as the irreversible covalent polymers after removing the applied stimuli. Compared with the traditional thermosets with three-dimensional cross-linker networks, the dynamic reversible process endows the cross-linker polymer with certain degree of controllable degradation, recycling, self-healing, and other excellent properties, which is hard for conventional covalent polymers to achieve. Dynamic covalent polymers possess both the mechanical properties of traditional thermosets and the thermodynamic lability of supramolecular polymers. It has shown great potential in the application of intelligent devices such as flexible electronic skin, shape memory, 3D and 4D printing, intelligent sensors, etc., and presented great potential in industrial scale. In this review, various types of dynamic covalent bonds and their reactions are introduced, including carbon radical exchange, olefin metathesis, DA reaction, disulfide bond exchange, disulfide-thiol exchange, etc. Then the structural design, properties, and applications of polymer materials containing different types of dynamic covalent bonds are briefly summarized. This provides a certain theoretical guidance for the study of reversible polymers. Finally, the future development and scientific challenge of dynamic covalent polymers are prospected and discussed, which involved in three aspects: (a) preparation of high performance structural materials based on dynamic covalent bonds, (b) the relationship between dynamic covalent bonds and rheology behavior of materials, and (c) the combination of various dynamic bonds to prepare functional materials.
A Chemically Recyclable Crosslinked Polymer Network Enabled by Orthogonal Dynamic Covalent Chemistry

Abstract:Chemical recycling of synthetic polymers offers a solution for developing sustainable plastics and materials. Here we show that two types of dynamic covalent chemistry can be orthogonalized in a solvent-free polymer network and thus enable a chemically recyclable crosslinked material. Using a simple acylhydrazine-based 1,2-dithiolane as the starting material, the disulfide-mediated reversible polymerization and acylhydrazone-based dynamic covalent crosslinking can be combined in a one-pot solvent-free reaction, resulting in mechanically robust, tough, and processable crosslinked materials. The dynamic covalent bonds in both backbones and crosslinkers endow the network with depolymerization capability under mild conditions and, importantly, virgin-quality monomers can be recovered and separated. This proof-of-concept study show opportunities to design chemically recyclable materials based on the dynamic chemistry toolbox.

Abstract:The majority of post-consumer plastic waste is not recycled. Impediments to the recycling of commodity polymers include separation, impurities and degradation of the macromolecular structures, all of which can negatively affect the properties of recycled materials. Material recycled in this way exhibits no loss in properties, creating an ideal, circular polymer economy. This Review presents our vision for realizing a circular polymer economy based on CRM. We examine the energetics of polymerization and other challenges in developing practical and scalable CRM processes. We briefly review attempts to achieve CRM with commodity polymers, including through polyolefin thermolysis and nylon 6 ring-closing depolymerization, and closely examine the recent flourishing of CRM with new-to-the-world polymers. The benefits of heterocycle ring-opening polymerization are discussed in terms of synthetic control and kinetically accessible polymer-backbone functionality. Common chemical and structural characteristics of CRM-compatible ring-opening-polymerization monomers are identified, and the properties, benefits and liabilities of these recyclable polymers are discussed. We conclude with our perspective on the ideals and opportunities for the field.

Abstract:Polymers capable of depolymerizing back to their own monomers offer a promising solution to address the challenges in polymer sustainability. Despite significant progress has been achieved in plastics circularity, chemical recycling of thermoplastic elastomers is relatively less concerned, largely because of their intrinsic complex multicomponents. This work creates a homopolymer-based platform towards chemically recyclable but tough thermoplastic elastomers. It is enabled by a semicrystalline polymer with high molecular weight but low crystallinity, which is prepared through ring-opening metathesis polymerization of a fully biobased cyclic olefin. By shifting the ring-chain equilibrium, quantitative conversions were achieved for both forward polymerization and reverse depolymerization. This simple circular, high-performance thermoplastic elastomer platform based on biomass highlights the importance of monomer design in addressing three challenges in sustainable polymers: the feedstock renewability, depolymerization selectivity, and performance trade-offs.

Abstract:In 1969, Berger called attention to a type of glomerulonephritis in which deposition of immunoglobulin A (IgA) was prominent.' In the ensuing years, researchers have recognized IgA nephropathy as accounting for about 15% of cases of glomerulonephritis, whose common denominator is mesangial IgA as the predominant, though not necessarily the only, immunoglobulin class deposited.' Other features often associated include hematuria. proteinuria, circulating immune complexes containing IgA, and a clinical syndrome suggestive of an acute infectious episode, possibly viral in nature. The association of a viral-type syndrome with deposition of IgA in the kidney has suggested that IgA nephropathy in general could result from a mucosal immune response to antigens present within the mucosa itself. Whereas such antigens could be derived from infectious agents or absorbed inert molecules, a replicating microorganism would provide an ongoing source of stimulation in which antigen continues to be produced after the initiation of the antibody response. In this view, which is by no means the only possibility, IgA nephropathy would be a variant of classical serum sickness, with IgA largely replacing IgG as the offending antibody, because of a mucosal rather than a systemic antigenic stimulus. Indeed, passively administered IgA-immune complexes have been shown to be capable of lodging in the kidney.' With the above considerations in mind we sought to establish a model for human IgA nephropathy by prolonged oral immunization of mice to an inert protein antigen.
