Abstract:Skin cancer, including the highly lethal malignant melanoma, poses a significant global health challenge with a rising incidence rate. Early detection plays a pivotal role in improving survival rates. This study aims to develop an advanced deep learning-based approach for accurate skin lesion classification, addressing challenges such as limited data availability, class imbalance, and noise. Modern deep neural network designs, such as ResNeXt101, SeResNeXt101, ResNet152V2, DenseNet201, GoogLeNet, and Xception, which are used in the study and ze optimised using the SGD technique. The dataset comprises diverse skin lesion images from the HAM10000 and ISIC datasets. Noise and artifacts are tackled using image inpainting, and data augmentation techniques enhance training sample diversity. The ensemble technique is utilized, creating both average and weighted average ensemble models. Grid search optimizes model weight distribution. The individual models exhibit varying performance, with metrics including recall, precision, F1 score, and MCC. The "Average ensemble model" achieves harmonious balance, emphasizing precision, F1 score, and recall, yielding high performance. The "Weighted ensemble model" capitalizes on individual models' strengths, showcasing heightened precision and MCC, yielding outstanding performance. The ensemble models consistently outperform individual models, with the average ensemble model attaining a macro-average ROC-AUC score of 96 % and the weighted ensemble model achieving a macro-average ROC-AUC score of 97 %. This research demonstrates the efficacy of ensemble techniques in significantly improving skin lesion classification accuracy. By harnessing the strengths of individual models and addressing their limitations, the ensemble models exhibit robust and reliable performance across various metrics. The findings underscore the potential of ensemble techniques in enhancing medical diagnostics and contributing to improved patient outcomes in skin lesion diagnosis.

Abstract:Melanoma is a skin disease with a high fatality rate. Early diagnosis of melanoma can effectively increase the survival rate of patients. There are three types of dermoscopy images, malignant melanoma, benign nevis, and seborrheic keratosis, so using dermoscopy images to classify melanoma is an indispensable task in diagnosis. However, early melanoma classification works can only use the low-level information of images, so the melanoma cannot be classified efficiently; the recent deep learning methods mainly depend on a single network, although it can extract high-level features, the poor scale and type of the features limited the results of the classification. Therefore, we need an automatic classification method for melanoma, which can make full use of the rich and deep feature information of images for classification. In this study, we propose an ensemble method that can integrate different types of classification networks for melanoma classification. Specifically, we first use U-net to segment the lesion area of images to generate a lesion mask, thus resize images to focus on the lesion; then, we use five excellent classification models to classify dermoscopy images, and adding squeeze-excitation block (SE block) to models to emphasize the more informative features; finally, we use our proposed new ensemble network to integrate five different classification results. The experimental results prove the validity of our results. We test our method on the ISIC 2017 challenge dataset and obtain excellent results on multiple metrics; especially, we get 0.909 on accuracy. Our classification framework can provide an efficient and accurate way for melanoma classification using dermoscopy images, laying the foundation for early diagnosis and later treatment of melanoma.

Abstract:Auotmatic melanoma classification in dermoscopy images is a very important task, which can help improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce mortality. Deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) has developed rapidly in recent years, but it is still a challenging task due to the intra-class variation and inter-class similarity of melanoma. We proposed a novel neural network integration model, which is composed of three parts: First, we use U-net segmentation network to generate masks and use the masks to crop original images; Second, we use five state-of-the-art DCNNs to extract features of cropped images, and add the squeeze-excitation block (SE block) to emphasize useful features; Finally, we construct a new neural network with local connection to integrate the classification results, extract features of different class of results, and integrate the results of each class separately. Local connection can integrate each class separately, maximizing the advantages of different networks in various classes. We evaluate our model on ISIC 2017 challenge dataset, and the result shows that our method has better performance compared with the existing methods.
An integrated framework of skin lesion detection and recognition through saliency method and optimal deep neural network features selection

Abstract:Malignant melanoma, not belongs to a common type of skin cancers but most serious because of its growth—affecting large number of people worldwide. Recent studies proclaimed that risk factors can be substantially reduced by making it almost treatable, if detected at its early stages. This timely detection and classification demand an automated system, though procedure is quite complex. In this article, a novel strategy is adopted, which not only diagnoses the skin cancer but also assigns a proper class label. The proposed technique is principally built on saliency valuation and the selection of most discriminant deep features selection. The lesion contrast is being enhanced using proposed Gaussian method, followed by color space transformation from RGB to HSV. The new color space facilitates the saliency map construction process, utilizing inner and outer disjoint windows, by making the foreground and background maximally differentiable. From the segmented images, deep features are extracted by utilizing inception CNN model on two basic output layers. These extracted set of features are later fused using proposed decision-controlled parallel fusion method, prior to feature selection using proposed window distance-controlled entropy features selection method. The most discriminant features are later subjected to classification step. To demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed methods, three freely available datasets are utilized such as PH2, ISBI 2016, and ISBI 2017 with achieve accuracy is 97.74%, 96.1%, and 97%, respectively. Simulation results clearly reveal the improved performance of proposed method on all three datasets compared to existing methods.

Abstract:Skin cancer is one of the widespread diseases among existing cancer types. More importantly, the detection of lesions in early diagnosis has tremendously attracted researchers' attention. Thus, artificial intelligence (AI)-based techniques have supported the early diagnosis of skin cancer by investigating deep-learning-based convolutional neural networks (CNN). However, the current methods remain challenging in detecting melanoma in dermoscopic images. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an ensemble model that uses the vision of both EfficientNetV2S and Swin-Transformer models to detect the early focal zone of skin cancer. Hence, we considerthat the former architecture leads to greater accuracy, while the latter model has the advantage of recognizing dark parts in an image. We have modified the fifth block of the EfficientNetV2S model and have included the Swin-Transformer model. Our experiments demonstrate that the constructed ensemble model has attained a higher level of accuracy over the individual models and has also decreased the losses as compared to traditional strategies. The proposed model achieved an accuracy score of 99.10%, a sensitivity of 99.27%, and a specificity score of 99.80%.

Abstract:Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer, which makes it pertinent to be able to diagnose it accurately. In particular, melanoma is a form of skin cancer that is fatal and accounts for 6 of every 7-skin cancer related death. Moreover, in hospitals where dermatologists have to diagnose multiple cases of skin cancer, there are high possibilities of false negatives in diagnosis. To avoid such incidents, there here has been exhaustive research conducted by the research community all over the world to build highly accurate automated tools for skin cancer detection. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach of combining machine learning and deep learning techniques to solve the problem of skin cancer detection. The deep learning model uses state-of-the-art neural networks to extract features from images whereas the machine learning model processes image features which are obtained after performing the techniques such as Contourlet Transform and Local Binary Pattern Histogram. Meaningful feature extraction is crucial for any image classification roblem. As a result, by combining the manual and automated features, our designed model achieves a higher accuracy of 93% with an individual recall score of 99.7% and 86% for the benign and malignant forms of cancer, respectively. We benchmarked the model on publicly available Kaggle dataset containing processed images from ISIC Archive dataset. The proposed ensemble outperforms both expert dermatologists as well as other state-of-the-art deep learning and machine learning methods. Thus, this novel method can be of high assistance to dermatologists to help prevent any misdiagnosis.

Abstract:One of the deadliest forms of skin cancer is malignant melanoma, developed by aberrant melanocyte cell development. Efficient diagnostic procedures are essential due to the rising prevalence of skin illnesses resulting from several variables such as infections, allergies, dietary habits, chemical exposure, genetic sensitivities, and lifestyle changes. An increasing number of Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) prototypes are used for the computerized identification of skin cancer using dermoscopic images. The research aims to develop a detailed classification framework for the multi-class categorization of skin cancer carcinoma at an earlier phase using Hair removal image processing Technique and Ensemble Visual Geometry Group-16 (EVGG-16) based on a Convolution Neural Network. The main idea is to set different initializations to the same VGG-16 model three times and then to Ensemble the results. The Experimental results show that the VGG-16 model receives an average accuracy of 87% and an F1 score of 86%. The proposed Ensemble Visual Geometry Group-16 (EVGG-16) model receives an average accuracy of 88% and an F1-score of 88% without the hair removal image processing technique; the same model receives an average accuracy of 89% and an F1-score of 88% after applying the hair removal image processing technique. The publicly accessible HAM1000 dataset was employed to experiment; it includes processed images belonging to seven classes to evaluate the model's effectiveness. In conclusion, our proposed Ensemble model with Hair removal technique performs better than other cutting-edge deep-learning techniques and skilled dermatologists. Furthermore, this might be a trustworthy real-time teaching resource for medical students in a dermatology program.

Abstract:A skin lesion is a portion of skin that observes abnormal growth compared to other areas of the skin. The ISIC 2018 lesion dataset has seven classes. A miniature dataset version of it is also available with only two classes: malignant and benign. Malignant tumors are tumors that are cancerous, and benign tumors are non-cancerous. Malignant tumors have the ability to multiply and spread throughout the body at a much faster rate. The early detection of the cancerous skin lesion is crucial for the survival of the patient. Deep learning models and machine learning models play an essential role in the detection of skin lesions. Still, due to image occlusions and imbalanced datasets, the accuracies have been compromised so far. In this paper, we introduce an interpretable method for the non-invasive diagnosis of melanoma skin cancer using deep learning and ensemble stacking of machine learning models. The dataset used to train the classifier models contains balanced images of benign and malignant skin moles. Hand-crafted features are used to train the base models (logistic regression, SVM, random forest, KNN, and gradient boosting machine) of machine learning. The prediction of these base models was used to train level one model stacking using cross-validation on the training set. Deep learning models (MobileNet, Xception, ResNet50, ResNet50V2, and DenseNet121) were used for transfer learning, and were already pre-trained on ImageNet data. The classifier was evaluated for each model. The deep learning models were then ensembled with different combinations of models and assessed. Furthermore, shapely adaptive explanations are used to construct an interpretability approach that generates heatmaps to identify the parts of an image that are most suggestive of the illness. This allows dermatologists to understand the results of our model in a way that makes sense to them. For evaluation, we calculated the accuracy, F1-score, Cohen’s kappa, confusion matrix, and ROC curves and identified the best model for classifying skin lesions.

Abstract:Melanoma is a type of a skin cancer or lesion which has the detrimental ramifications on the human health but with early diagnosis it can be cured easily. The actual identification of skin lesion is very challenging because of factors like a very minute difference between lesion and skin and it is very difficult to differentiate among skin cancer types due to visual comparability. Hence an autonomous system for the diagnosis of true skin cancer type is very useful. In this article, we took the leverage of ensemble learning by combining the features of deep learning architectures with traditional features extraction approaches. For segmentation, we have two pipelines for the feature extraction. We extract the features through traditional split and merge approach as well as from deep learning algorithms of contextual encoding along with the attention mechanism. Later we combine the features of both architectures and predict the segmented region through intersection over union mechanism. After that segmented region is classified into three types of skin lesion using hybrid features of Alex‐Net and VGG‐16 through the transfer learning approach. The evaluation has been performed using the ISIC and PH2 datasets for which achieved segmentation accuracy is 97.8% and 96.7%, respectively. Moreover, hybrid classification network able to attain the 98.2% accuracy.
New pyramidal hybrid textural and deep features based automatic skin cancer classification model: Ensemble DarkNet and textural feature extractor

Abstract:Background: Skin cancer is one of the widely seen cancer worldwide and automatic classification of skin cancer can be benefited dermatology clinics for an accurate diagnosis. Hence, a machine learning-based automatic skin cancer detection model must be developed. Material and Method: This research interests to overcome automatic skin cancer detection problem. A colored skin cancer image dataset is used. This dataset contains 3297 images with two classes. An automatic multilevel textural and deep features-based model is presented. Multilevel fuse feature generation using discrete wavelet transform (DWT), local phase quantization (LPQ), local binary pattern (LBP), pre-trained DarkNet19, and DarkNet53 are utilized to generate features of the skin cancer images, top 1000 features are selected threshold value-based neighborhood component analysis (NCA). The chosen top 1000 features are classified using the 10-fold cross-validation technique. Results: To obtain results, ten-fold cross-validation is used and 91.54% classification accuracy results are obtained by using the recommended pyramidal hybrid feature generator and NCA selector-based model. Further, various training and testing separation ratios (90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40, 50:50) are used and the maximum classification rate is calculated as 95.74% using the 90:10 separation ratio. Conclusions: The findings and accuracies calculated are denoted that this model can be used in dermatology and pathology clinics to simplify the skin cancer detection process and help physicians.

Abstract:Deep learning utilizing convolutional neural networks (CNNs) stands out among the state-of-the-art procedures in PC-supported medical findings. The method proposed in this paper consists of two key stages. In the first stage, the proposed deep sequential CNN model preprocesses images to isolate regions of interest from skin lesions and extracts features, capturing the relevant patterns and detecting multiple lesions. The second stage incorporates a web tool to increase the visualization of the model by promising patient health diagnoses. The proposed model was thoroughly trained, validated, and tested utilizing a database related to the HAM 10,000 dataset. The model accomplished an accuracy of 96.25% in classifying skin lesions, exhibiting significant areas of strength. The results achieved with the proposed model validated by evaluation methods and user feedback indicate substantial improvement over the current state-of-the-art methods for skin lesion classification (malignant/benign). In comparison to other models, sequential CNN surpasses CNN transfer learning (87.9%), VGG 19 (86%), ResNet-50 + VGG-16 (94.14%), Inception v3 (90%), Vision Transformers (RGB images) (92.14%), and the Entropy-NDOELM method (95.7%). The findings demonstrate the potential of deep learning, convolutional neural networks, and sequential CNN in disease detection and classification, eventually revolutionizing melanoma detection and, thus, upgrading patient consideration.

Abstract:Skin cancer poses a significant healthcare challenge, requiring precise and prompt diagnosis for effective treatment. While recent advances in deep learning have dramatically improved medical image analysis, including skin cancer classification, ensemble methods offer a pathway for further enhancing diagnostic accuracy. This study introduces a cutting-edge approach employing the Max Voting Ensemble Technique for robust skin cancer classification on ISIC 2018: Task 1-2 dataset. We incorporate a range of cutting-edge, pre-trained deep neural networks, including MobileNetV2, AlexNet, VGG16, ResNet50, DenseNet201, DenseNet121, InceptionV3, ResNet50V2, InceptionResNetV2, and Xception. These models have been extensively trained on skin cancer datasets, achieving individual accuracies ranging from 77.20% to 91.90%. Our method leverages the synergistic capabilities of these models by combining their complementary features to elevate classification performance further. In our approach, input images undergo preprocessing for model compatibility. The ensemble integrates the pre-trained models with their architectures and weights preserved. For each skin lesion image under examination, every model produces a prediction. These are subsequently aggregated using the max voting ensemble technique to yield the final classification, with the majority-voted class serving as the conclusive prediction. Through comprehensive testing on a diverse dataset, our ensemble outperformed individual models, attaining an accuracy of 93.18% and an AUC score of 0.9320, thus demonstrating superior diagnostic reliability and accuracy. We evaluated the effectiveness of our proposed method on the HAM10000 dataset to ensure its generalizability. Our ensemble method delivers a robust, reliable, and effective tool for the classification of skin cancer. By utilizing the power of advanced deep neural networks, we aim to assist healthcare professionals in achieving timely and accurate diagnoses, ultimately reducing mortality rates and enhancing patient outcomes.

Abstract:<p>Malignant melanoma is considered to be one of the deadliest types of skin cancers which is responsible for the massive number of deaths worldwide. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), more than a million Americans are living with this melanoma. Since 2019, 192,310 new cases of melanoma are registered, where 95,380 are noninvasive, and 96,480 are invasive. The numbers of deaths due to melanoma in 2019 alone are 7,230, comprising 4,740 men and 2,490 women. Melanoma may be curable if diagnosed at the earlier stages; however, the manual diagnosis is time-consuming and also dependent on the expert dermatologist. In this work, a fully automated computerized aided diagnosis (CAD) system is proposed based on the deep learning framework. In the proposed scheme, the original dermoscopic images are initially pre-processed using the decorrelation formulation technique, which later passes the resultant images to the MASK-RCNN for the lesion segmentation. In this step, the MASK RCNN model is trained using the segmented RGB images generated from the ground truth images of ISBI2016 and ISIC2017 datasets. The resultant segmented images are later passed to the DenseNet deep model for feature extraction. Two different layers, average pool and fully connected, are used for feature extraction, which are later combined, and the resultant vector is forwarded to the feature selection block for down - sampling using proposed entropy-controlled least square SVM (LS-SVM). Three datasets are utilized for validation - ISBI2016, ISBI2017, and HAM10000 to achieve an accuracy of 96.3%, 94.8%, and 88.5% respectively. Further, the performance of MASK-RCNN is also validated on ISBI2016 and ISBI2017 to attain an accuracy of 93.6% and 92.7%. To further increase our confidence in the proposed framework, a fair comparison with other state-of-the-art is also provided.</p>

Multimodal ensemble neural network system for skin cancer detection on heterogeneous dermatological data

Abstract:Today, skin cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world. Diagnosing skin cancer early is critical to increasing potential survival. Therefore, it is relevant to develop highprecision intelligent auxiliary diagnostic systems for detecting skin cancer in the early stages. Ensemble learning is one of the current and promising methods for increasing the accuracy of intelligent classification systems by reducing the dispersion and variability of predictions of individual components of the overall system. The work proposes an ensemble intelligent system for analyzing heterogeneous dermatological data based on multimodal neural networks. The accuracy of the developed ensemble system was 85.92 %, which is 1.85 percentage points higher than the average accuracy of individual multimodal architectures for classifying heterogeneous dermatological data. The developed system can be used as a high-precision auxiliary diagnostic tool to help make a medical decision, which will increase the chance of early detection of pigmented oncological pathologies.

Abstract:Background: Breakthroughs in skin cancer diagnostics have resulted from recent image recognition and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology advancements. There has been growing recognition that skin cancer can be lethal to humans. For instance, melanoma is the most unpredictable and terrible form of skin cancer. Materials and methodology: This paper aims to support Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) applications by developing a robust image classification model for the early detection of melanoma, a deadly skin cancer. It presents a novel approach to melanoma detection using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based method that employs image classification techniques based on Deep Learning (DL). We analyze dermatoscopic images from publicly available datasets, including DermIS, DermQuest, DermIS&Quest, and ISIC2019. Our model applies convolutional and pooling layers to extract meaningful features, followed by fully connected layers for classification. Results: The proposed CNN model achieves high accuracy demonstrates the model's effectiveness in distinguishing between malignant and benign skin lesions. We developed deep features and used transfer learning to improve the categorization accuracy of medical images. Soft-max classification layer and support vector machine have been used to assess the classification performance of deep features. The proposed model's efficacy is rigorously evaluated using benchmark datasets: DermIS, DermQuest, and ISIC2019, having 621, 1233, and 25000 images, respectively. Its performance is compared to current best practices showing an average of 5% improved detection accuracy in DermIS, 6% improvement in DermQuest, and 0.81% in ISIC2019 datasets. Conclusion: Our study showcases the potential of CNN in melanoma detection, contributing to early diagnosis and improved patient outcomes. The developed model proves its capability to aid dermatologists in accurate decision-making, paving the way for enhanced skin cancer diagnosis.

Abstract:Skin cancer is a common and possibly deadly disease that affects the skin's outer layers. Promoting knowledge of skin cancer, its risk factors, and the need for early detection can help combat the illness and reduce its impact on individuals and communities around the world. In this project, we describe a novel use of deep learning techniques to detect skin cancer in its early stages using dermatoscopic images. The primary goal of this study is to create an accurate and reliable model for predicting various types of skin cancer, including actinic keratoses and intraepithelial carcinoma (akiec), basal cell carcinoma (bcc), benign keratosis-like lesions (bkl), dermatofibroma (df), melanoma (mel), melanocytic nevi (nv), and pyogenic granulomas and hemorrhage (vasc). The project is written in Python, and the primary algorithm/model used is the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture. CNNs are ideal for image classification jobs because they can automatically learn relevant characteristics from input. Using CNNs, our model is trained on the HAM10000 (Human Against Machine with 10,000 training images) dataset, which contains 10015 high-resolution dermatoscopic images obtained from distinct populations and acquired via multiple modalities. The achieved findings illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. The model had an amazing training accuracy of 96.00% and a validation accuracy of 97.00%. These high accuracy rates demonstrate the promise of our deep learning-based skin cancer prediction system as a trustworthy tool for early diagnosis, allowing healthcare practitioners to make more informed decisions and improve patient outcomes. Our effort contributes to the field of dermatological research and machine learning, providing valuable insights into the use of deep learning algorithms for skin cancer prediction. Furthermore, the publicly available HAM10000 dataset, which includes a wide range of dermatoscopic pictures, can be a great resource for academic study and future advances in the field of medical image processing and classification. Abstract:One of the most promising research initiatives in the healthcare field is focused on the rising incidence of skin cancer worldwide and improving early discovery methods for the disease. The most significant factor in the fatalities caused by skin cancer is the late identification of the disease. The likelihood of human survival may be significantly improved by performing an early diagnosis followed by appropriate therapy. It is not a simple process to extract the elements from the photographs of the tumors that may be used for the prospective identification of skin cancer. Several deep learning models are widely used to extract efficient features for a skin cancer diagnosis; nevertheless, the literature demonstrates that there is still room for additional improvements in various performance metrics. This study proposes a hybrid deep convolutional neural network architecture for identifying skin cancer by adding two main heuristics. These include Xception and MobileNetV2 models. Data augmentation was introduced to balance the dataset, and the transfer learning technique was utilized to resolve the challenges of the absence of labeled datasets. It has been detected that the suggested method of employing Xception in conjunction with MobileNetV2 attains the most excellent performance, particularly concerning the dataset that was evaluated: specifically, it produced 97.56% accuracy, 97.00% area under the curve, 100% sensitivity, 93.33% precision, 96.55% F1 score, and 0.0370 false favorable rates. This research has implications for clinical practice and public health, offering a valuable tool for dermatologists and healthcare professionals in their fight against skin cancer.
DSCC_Net: Multi-Classification Deep Learning Models for Diagnosing of Skin Cancer Using Dermoscopic Images

Abstract:Skin cancer is one of the most lethal kinds of human illness. In the present state of the health care system, skin cancer identification is a time-consuming procedure and if it is not diagnosed initially then it can be threatening to human life. To attain a high prospect of complete recovery, early detection of skin cancer is crucial. In the last several years, the application of deep learning (DL) algorithms for the detection of skin cancer has grown in popularity. Based on a DL model, this work intended to build a multi-classification technique for diagnosing skin cancers such as melanoma (MEL), basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanocytic nevi (MN). In this paper, we have proposed a novel model, a deep learning-based skin cancer classification network (DSCC_Net) that is based on a convolutional neural network (CNN), and evaluated it on three publicly available benchmark datasets (i.e., ISIC 2020, HAM10000, and DermIS). For the skin cancer diagnosis, the classification performance of the proposed DSCC_Net model is compared with six baseline deep networks, including ResNet-152, Vgg-16, Vgg-19, Inception-V3, EfficientNet-B0, and MobileNet. In addition, we used SMOTE Tomek to handle the minority classes issue that exists in this dataset. The proposed DSCC_Net obtained a 99.43% AUC, along with a 94.17%, accuracy, a recall of 93.76%, a precision of 94.28%, and an F1-score of 93.93% in categorizing the four distinct types of skin cancer diseases. The rates of accuracy for ResNet-152, Vgg-19, MobileNet, Vgg-16, EfficientNet-B0, and Inception-V3 are 89.32%, 91.68%, 92.51%, 91.12%, 89.46% and 91.82%, respectively. The results showed that our proposed DSCC_Net model performs better as compared to baseline models, thus offering significant support to dermatologists and health experts to diagnose skin cancer.

Abstract:Abstract When the mutation affects the melanocytes of the body, a condition called melanoma results which is one of the deadliest skin cancers. Early detection of cutaneous melanoma is vital for raising the chances of survival. Melanoma can be due to inherited defective genes or due to environmental factors such as excessive sun exposure. The accuracy of the state-of-the-art computer-aided diagnosis systems is unsatisfactory. Moreover, the major drawback of medical imaging is the shortage of labeled data. Generalized classifiers are required to diagnose melanoma to avoid overfitting the dataset. To address these issues, blending ensemble-based deep learning (BEDLM-CMS) model is proposed to detect mutation of cutaneous melanoma by integrating long short-term memory (LSTM), Bi-directional LSTM (BLSTM) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) architectures. The dataset used in the proposed study contains 2608 human samples and 6778 mutations in total along with 75 types of genes. The most prominent genes that function as biomarkers for early diagnosis and prognosis are utilized. Multiple extraction techniques are used in this study to extract the most-prominent features. Afterwards, we applied different DL models optimized through grid search technique to diagnose melanoma. The validity of the results is confirmed using several techniques, including tenfold cross validation (10-FCVT), independent set (IST), and self-consistency (SCT). For validation of the results multiple metrics are used which include accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, and Matthews’s correlation coefficient. BEDLM gives the highest accuracy of 97% in the independent set test whereas in self-consistency test and tenfold cross validation test it gives 94% and 93% accuracy, respectively. Accuracy of in self-consistency test, independent set test, and tenfold cross validation test is LSTM (96%, 94%, 92%), GRU (93%, 94%, 91%), and BLSTM (99%, 98%, 93%), respectively. The findings demonstrate that the proposed BEDLM-CMS can be used effectively applied for early diagnosis and treatment efficacy evaluation of cutaneous melanoma.

Machine Learning Approaches for Skin Neoplasm Diagnosis

Abstract:Approaches for skin neoplasm diagnosis include physical exam, skin biopsy, lab tests of biopsy samples, and image analyses. These approaches often involve errorprone and time-consuming processes. Recent studies show that machine learning has promises to effectively classify skin images into different classes such as melanoma and melanocytic nevi. In this work, we investigate machine learning approaches to enhance the performance of computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) systems to diagnose skin diseases. In the proposed CADx system, generative adversarial network (GAN) is used to identify (and remove) fake images. Exploratory data analysis (EDA) is applied to normalize the original dataset for preventing model overfitting. Synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) is employed to rectify class imbalances in the original dataset. To accurately classify skin images, the following four machine learning models are utilized: linear discriminant analysis (LDA), support vector machine (SVM), convolutional neural network (CNN), and an ensemble CNN-SVM. Experimental results using the HAM10000 dataset demonstrate the ability of the machine learning models to improve CADx performance in treating skin neoplasm. Initially, the LDA, SVM, CNN, and ensemble CNN-SVM show 49%, 72%, 77%, and 79% accuracy, respectively. After applying GAN, EDA, and SMOTE, the LDA, SVM, CNN, and ensemble CNNSVM show 76%, 83%, 87%, and 94% accuracy, respectively. We plan to explore other machine learning models and datasets in our next endeavor.
