Abstract:Microorganisms carrying antimicrobial resistance genes are often found in greywater. As the reuse of greywater becomes increasingly needed, it is imperative to determine how greywater treatment impacts antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). Using qPCR and SmartChipTM qPCR, we characterized ARG patterns in greywater microbial communities before, during, and after treatment by a recirculating vertical flow constructed wetland. In parallel, we examined the impact of greywater-treated irrigation on soil, including the occurrence of emerging micropollutants and the taxonomic and ARG compositions of microbial communities. Most ARGs in raw greywater are removed efficiently during the winter season, while some ARGs in the effluents increase in summer. SmartChipTM qPCR revealed the presence of ARGs, such as tetracycline and beta-lactam resistance genes, in both raw and treated greywater, but most abundantly in the filter bed. It also showed that aminoglycoside and vancomycin gene abundances significantly increased after treatment. In the irrigated soil, the type of water (potable or treated greywater) had no specific impact on the total bacterial abundance (16S rRNA gene). No overlapping ARGs were found between treated greywater and greywater-irrigated soil. This study indicates ARG abundance and richness increased after treatment, possibly due to the concentration effects of the filter beds.

Abstract:There is a growing body of knowledge on the persistence of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in greywater and greywater treatment systems such as constructed wetlands (CWs). Our research quantified ARGs (sul1, qnrS, and blaCTXM32), class one integron (intI1), and bacterial marker (16S) in four recirculating vertical flow CWs in a small community in the Negev desert, Israel, using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). The greywater microbial community was characterized using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Results show that CWs can reduce ARG in greywater by 1–3 log, depending on the gene and the quality of the raw greywater. Community sequencing results showed that the bacterial community composition was not significantly altered after treatment and that Proteobacteria, Epsilonbacteraeota, and Bacteroidetes were the most dominant phyla before and after treatment. Pseudomonas, Citrobacter, Enterobacter, and Aeromonas were the most commonly identified genera of the extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) colonies. Some of the ESBL bacteria identified have been linked to clinical infections (Acinetobacter nosocomialis, Pseudomonas fulva, Pseudomonas putida, Pseudomonas monteilii, and Roseomonas cervicalis). It is important to monitor intI1 for the potential transfer of ARGs to pathogenic bacteria.

Microbial niches and dynamics of antibiotic resistance genes in a bio-enhanced granular-activated carbon biofilm treating greywater

Abstract:Accumulation and transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in greywater treatment systems present risks for its reuse. In this study, a gravity flow self-supplying oxygen (O2) bio-enhanced granular activated carbon dynamic biofilm reactor (BhGAC-DBfR) was developed to treat greywater. Maximum removal efficiencies were achieved at saturated/unsaturated ratios (RSt/Ust) of 1:1.1 for chemical oxygen demand (97.6 ± 1.5%), linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) (99.2 ± 0.5%), NH4+-N (99.3 ± 0.7%) and total nitrogen (85.3 ± 3.2%). Microbial communities were significantly different at various RSt/Ust and reactor positions (P < 0.05). The unsaturated zone with low RSt/Ust showed more abundant microorganisms than the saturated zone with high RSt/Ust. The reactor-top community was predominant by aerobic nitrification (Nitrospira) and LAS biodegradation (Pseudomonas, Rhodobacter and Hydrogenophaga) related genera; but reactor-bottom community was predominant by anaerobic denitrification and organics removal related genera (Dechloromonas and Desulfovibrio). Most of the ARGs (e.g., intI-1, sul1, sul2 and korB) were accumulated in the biofilm, which were closely associated with microbial communities at reactor top and stratification. The saturated zone can achieve over 80% removal of the tested ARGs at all operation Phases. Results suggested that BhGAC-DBfR can provide assistance in blocking the environment dissemination of ARGs during greywater treatment.

Abstract:Water reuse is an essential strategy for reducing water demand from conventional sources, alleviating water stress, and promoting sustainability, but understanding the effectiveness of associated treatment processes as barriers to the spread of antibiotic resistance is an important consideration to protecting human health. We comprehensively evaluated the reduction of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in two field-operational water reuse systems with distinct treatment trains, one producing water for indirect potable reuse (ozone/biologically-active carbon/granular activated carbon) and the other for non-potable reuse (denitrification-filtration/chlorination) using metagenomic sequencing and culture. Relative abundances of total ARGs/clinically-relevant ARGs and cultured ARB were reduced by several logs during primary and secondary stages of wastewater treatment, but to a lesser extent during the tertiary water reuse treatments. In particular, ozonation tended to enrich multi-drug ARGs. The effect of chlorination was facility-dependent, increasing the relative abundance of ARGs when following biologically-active carbon filters, but generally providing a benefit in reduced bacterial numbers and ecological and human health resistome risk scores. Relative abundances of total ARGs and resistome risk scores were lowest in aquifer samples, although resistant Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae were occasionally detected in the monitoring well 3-days downgradient from injection, but not 6-months downgradient. Resistant E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were occasionally detected in the nonpotable reuse distribution system, along with increased levels of multidrug, sulfonamide, phenicol, and aminoglycoside ARGs. This study illuminates specific vulnerabilities of water reuse systems to persistence, selection, and growth of ARGs and ARB and emphasizes the role of multiple treatment barriers, including aquifers and distribution systems.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) contain diverse antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and thus are considered as a major pathway for the dissemination of these genes into the environments. However, comprehensive evaluations of ARGs dynamic during wastewater treatment process lack extensive investigations on a broad spectrum of ARGs. Here, we investigated the dynamics of ARGs and bacterial community structures in 114 samples from eleven Chinese WWTPs using high-throughput quantitative PCR and 16S rRNA-based Illumina sequencing analysis. Significant shift of ARGs profiles was observed and wastewater treatment process could significantly reduce the abundance and diversity of ARGs, with the removal of ARGs concentration by 1-2 orders of magnitude. Whereas, a considerable number of ARGs were detected and enriched in effluents compared with influents. In particular, seven ARGs mainly conferring resistance to beta-lactams and aminoglycosides and three mobile genetic elements persisted in all WWTPs samples after wastewater treatment. ARGs profiles varied with wastewater treatment processes, seasons and regions. This study tracked the footprint of ARGs during wastewater treatment process, which would support the assessment on the spread of ARGs from WWTPs and provide data for identifying management options to improve ARG mitigation in WWTPs.

Abstract:Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been regarded as an emerging pollutant in municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents due to their potential risk to human health and ecological safety when reused for landscape and irrigation. Conventional wastewater treatment processes generally fail to effectively reduce ARGs, especially extracellular ARGs (eARGs), which are persistent in the environment and play an important role in horizontal gene transfer via transformation. Herein, an integrated process of pre-coagulation and microfiltration was developed for removal of ARGs, especially eARGs, from wastewater effluent. Results show that the integrated process could effectively reduce the absolute abundances of total ARGs (tARGs) (>2.9 logs) and eARGs (>5.2 logs) from the effluent. The excellent performance could be mainly attributed to the capture of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and eARGs by pre-coagulation and co-rejection during subsequent microfiltration. Moreover, the integrated process exhibited a good performance on removing common pollutants (e.g., dissolved organic carbon and phosphate) from the effluent to improve water quality. Besides, the integrated process also greatly reduced membrane fouling compared with microfiltration. These findings suggest that the integrated process of pre-coagulation and microfiltration is a promising advanced wastewater treatment technology for ARGs (especially eARGs) removal from WWTP effluents to ensure water reuse security.

Abstract:Treated wastewater is increasingly being reused to achieve sustainable water management in arid regions. The objective of this study was to quantify the distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in recycled water, particularly after it has passed through the distribution system, and to consider point-of-use implications for soil irrigation. Three separate reclaimed wastewater distribution systems in the western U.S. were examined. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to quantify ARGs corresponding to resistance to sulfonamides (sul1, sul2), macrolides (ermF), tetracycline [tet(A), tet(O)], glycopeptides (vanA), and methicillin (mecA), in addition to genes present in waterborne pathogens Legionella pneumophila (Lmip), Escherichia coli (gadAB), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ecfx, gyrB). In a parallel lab study, the effect of irrigating an agricultural soil with secondary, chlorinated, or dechlorinated wastewater effluent was examined in batch microcosms. A broader range of ARGs were detected after the reclaimed water passed through the distribution systems, highlighting the importance of considering bacterial re-growth and the overall water quality at the point of use (POU). Screening for pathogens with qPCR indicated presence of Lmip and gadAB genes, but not ecfx or gyrB. In the lab study, chlorination was observed to reduce 16S rRNA and sul2 gene copies in the wastewater effluent, while dechlorination had no apparent effect. ARGs levels did not change with time in soil slurries incubated after a single irrigation event with any of the effluents. However, when irrigated repeatedly with secondary wastewater effluent (not chlorinated or dechlorinated), elevated levels of sul1 and sul2 were observed. This study suggests that reclaimed water may be an important reservoir of ARGs, especially at the POU, and that attention should be directed toward the fate of ARGs in irrigation water and the implications for human health.

Abstract:Wastewater reuse may serve as an important solution to the emerging issue of water scarcity. However, the potential public and ecological risks of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) may hinder the wide application of treated wastewater reclamation. Wastewater treatment plants have been recognized as hotspots of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and key nodes of their spreading. Owing to their characterization of bioactive and penetrating ability from the treatment processes, it is important to design the tertiary treatment to enhance removal efficiencies of intracellular- and extracellular ARGs. Herein, we critically reviewed the available technologies classified into physicochemical, eco-biological, and integrated processes for reclaimed water generation and ARG removal from recently published articles. We summarized the performance, mechanisms, and bottlenecks of each process. For future prospects, we proposed a framework for multimode reuse to achieve the goal of sustainable social water cycle with low risk posed by AMR.

Effects of Advanced Treatment Systems on the Removal of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Wastewater Treatment Plants from Hangzhou, China.

Abstract:This study aimed at quantifying the concentration and removal of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in three municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) employing different advanced treatment systems [biological aerated filter, constructed wetland, and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection]. The concentrations of tetM, tetO, tetQ, tetW, sulI, sulII, intI1, and 16S rDNA genes were examined in wastewater and biosolid samples. In municipal WWTPs, ARG reductions of 1-3 orders of magnitude were observed, and no difference was found among the three municipal WWTPs with different treatment processes (p > 0.05). In advanced treatment systems, 1-3 orders of magnitude of reductions in ARGs were observed in constructed wetlands, 0.6-1.2 orders of magnitude of reductions in ARGs were observed in the biological aerated filter, but no apparent decrease by UV disinfection was observed. A significant difference was found between constructed wetlands and biological filter (p < 0.05) and between constructed wetlands and UV disinfection (p < 0.05). In the constructed wetlands, significant correlations were observed in the removal of ARGs and 16S rDNA genes (R(2) = 0.391-0.866; p < 0.05). Constructed wetlands not only have the comparable ARG removal values with WWTP (p > 0.05) but also have the advantage in ARG relative abundance removal, and it should be given priority to be an advanced treatment system for further ARG attenuation from WWTP.

Abstract:Background: The emergence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment poses a huge global health hazard. Hospital wastewater (HWW), in which a high density of antibiotic residues and antibiotic-resistant bacteria are present, may be a reservoir of ARGs dissemination into the environment. Our meta-analysis comprehensively analyzes the prevalence of ARGs in HWW, as well as the influencing factors in ARGs distribution. Methods: Online databases were used to search for literature using the subject terms: "Drug Resistance" AND "Genes" AND "Hospitals" AND "Wastewater". Two reviewers independently applied predefined criteria to assess the literature and extract data including "relative abundance of ARGs", "title", "authors", "country", "location", "sampling year" and "sampling seasons". The median values and 95% confidence intervals of ARGs abundance were calculated by Wilcox.test function in R. Temporal trends, spatial differences, seasonal variations and removal efficiency of ARGs were analyzed by Pearson correlation analysis and Kruskal-Wallis H test. Results: Resistance genes to carbapenems, sulfonamides, tetracyclines and mobile genetic elements were found at high relative abundance (>10-4 gene copies/16S rRNA gene copies) in HWW. The abundance of resistance genes to extended-spectrum β-lactams, carbapenems, sulfonamides and glycopeptide significantly decreased, while tetracycline resistance genes abundance increased from 2014 to 2018. The abundance of ARGs was significantly different by country but not by season. ARGs could not be completely removed by on-site HWW treatments and the removal efficiency varies for different ARGs. Conclusions: HWW presents more types of ARGs, and their abundance is higher than those in most wastewater systems. HWW may be a reservoir of ARGs and play an important role in the dissemination of ARGs.

Abstract:Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), carried by antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) have been present in large numbers in wastewater. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are regarded as reservoirs and sources for a wide variety of ARGs. A large number of mobile genetic elements (MGEs), heavy metals and emerging pollutants (e.g., microplastics, nanomaterials, pharmaceuticals and personal care products and quorum sensing inhibitors) detected in WWTPs can impact the proliferation of ARGs. Moreover, the removal efficiency of ARGs is limited in wastewater treatment processes. Therefore, it is of significance to summarize the research status of ARGs in WWTPs. This paper reviewed the occurrence and transmission of ARGs. The problem of multiple drug resistance and elimination of ARB were assessed in WWTPs. Also, the effects of heavy metals and emerging pollutants on ARGs in WWTPs were summarized. Furthermore, physical treatment and advanced oxidation processes for ARGs removal were critically discussed. Future research prospects were proposed with the ultimate goal to reduce the potential harm of ARGs to ecological environments and to provide guidance for practical applications.

Abstract:In coastal eco-industrial zones, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and constructed wetlands (CWs) can alleviate the challenge of water shortage and the negative effect of sewage discharge, while the problems of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have not attracted enough attention. In this research, the Wafergen SmartChip system was adopted to investigate the ARG profiles in a coupled system combined WWTPs and CWs in a coastal industrial park. Potential risks of antibiotic resistance in chemical industrial wastewater were confirmed due to the higher abundance of target ARGs (> 107 copies/mL). General decline with partial enrichment in absolute and relative abundance of ARGs from the WWTPs to CWs revealed the effective removal of ARGs in the coupled system, while the fate of different ARG types varied greatly. Aminoglycoside and sulfonamide ARGs were detected with higher abundance (up to 5.34 ×107 and 3.61 ×107 copies/mL), especially aac(6')-Ib and sul1. Denitrification, secondary sedimentation, and acid hydrolysis contributed to the removal of aminoglycoside, sulfonamide, β-lactamase, chloramphenicol, and multidrug ARGs. Catalytic ozonation contributed to the removal of tetracycline and MLSB ARGs. Subsurface CWs worked effectively for the removal of sulfonamide, tetracycline, and multidrug ARGs, especially tetX, cphA, tetG, and strB. Close correlations between ARGs and MGEs emphasized the vital roles of anthropogenic pollutants and horizontal gene transfer on the diffusion of ARGs. Actinobacteria, Bacteroidota, and Cyanobacteria were dominant in the CWs, while Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Planctomycetota were prevalent in the WWTPs. Redundancy analysis and variance partitioning analysis indicated that transposase and water quality posed greater influences on the distribution of ARGs. Co-occurrence network revealed that potential multiple antibiotic resistant pathogenic bacteria decreased in the CWs. The coupled system has a limited effect on the reduction of ARGs and potential ARG hosts, providing a comprehensive insight into the fate of ARGs in conventional water-processing systems.

Abstract:The spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is an emerging global health concern, and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), as an essential carrier for the occurrence and transmission of ARGs, deserves more attention. Based on the Illumina NovaSeq high-throughput sequencing platform, this study conducted a metagenomic analysis of 18 samples from three full-scale WWTPs to explore the fate of ARGs in the whole process (influent, biochemical treatment, advanced treatment, and effluent) of wastewater treatment. Total 70 ARG subtypes were detected, among which multidrug, aminoglycoside, tetracycline, and macrolide ARGs were most abundant. The different treatment processes used for three WWTPs were capable of reducing ARG diversity, but did not significantly reduce ARG abundance. Compared to that by denitrification filters, the membrane bioreactor (MBR) process was advantageous in controlling the prevalence of multidrug ARGs in WWTPs. Linear discriminant analysis Effect Size (LEfSe) suggested g_Nitrospira , g_Curvibacter , and g_Mycobacterium as the key bacteria responsible for differential ARG prevalence among different WWTPs. Meanwhile, adeF , sul1, and mtrA were the persistent antibiotic resistance genes (PARGs) and played dominant roles in the prevalence of ARGs. Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were the host bacteria of majority ARGs in WWTPs, while Pseudomonas and Nitrospira were the most crucial host bacteria influencing the dissemination of critical ARGs (e.g., adeF ). In addition, microbial richness was determined to be the decisive factor affecting the diversity and abundance of ARGs in wastewater treatment processes. Overall, regulating the abundance of microorganisms and key host bacteria by selecting processes with microbial interception, such as MBR process, may be beneficial to control the prevalence of ARGs in WWTPs.

Abstract:The development of effective and feasible engineering technologies to control the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and pathogenic antibiotic-resistant bacteria (PARB) form drinking water sources is urgently needed for ensuring drinking water safety. In this study, metagenomic analysis was applied to systematically explore the full profiles, removal, and potential health risks of antibiotic resistomes in a large constructed wetlands-reservoir ecosystem (CWs-R) for drinking water source improvement. A total of 343 ARG subtypes belonging to 18 ARG types were identified from water and sediment samples in the CWs-R ecosystem, with an average abundance of 0.339 copies/cell, and bacitracin and multidrug resistance genes were the predominant ARG types in the water and sediment, respectively. The CWs-R ecosystem showed an excellent removal efficiency of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in water, with the total removal rate reaching 64.82 % and 77.09 %, respectively, among which the emergent plant zone and ecological storage unit played major roles. The metagenomic assembly tracked many mobile ARGs and opportunistic pathogens in the CWs-R ecosystem and identified 19 contigs as ARG-carrying pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus , Salmonella enterica , Escherichia coli , and Klebsiella pneumonia . Overall, the CWs-R ecosystem has an important role in reducing the potential public health risks posed by antibiotic resistomes in drinking water sources but still cannot fully eliminate them. Therefore, we further classified water and sediment samples in the CWs-R ecosystem and identified potential ARGs and PARB indicators based on the metagenomic analysis results by considering the potential for horizontal transfer of ARGs to opportunistic pathogens. Taken together, this work demonstrates the CWs-R ecosystem as an economical and feasible engineering technology to reduce the dissemination of antibiotic resistomes in the drinking water source, provides useful information for monitoring and controlling antibiotic resistance in similar water sources, and ensures biosafety of drinking water.

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are identified as significant ecological systems for the potential control of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. However, the precise mechanisms governing removal, persistence, expression, and associated risks of ARGs during wetland treatment remain poorly understood. In this study, the distribution, mobility, expression, and hosts of ARGs in water, sediments, and plants of a field-scale CW and its parallel natural river were systematically investigated through metagenomic and metatranscriptomic approaches. Results showed that both the abundance and diversity of ARGs in water gradually decreased along the way of CW, reaching a final abundance removal rate of 72.28 % in the effluent. Source tracking analysis indicted that the reduction of ARGs in water was mainly achieved by the dynamic accumulation of ARGs in sediments and plants of the CW. Proteobacteria were identified as primary hosts for ARGs, particularly in sediments and plants during CW treatment. Moreover, although ESKAPE pathogens carrying multiple ARGs persisted in all media throughout the CW treatment, ARG expression levels and risk of water were also significantly decreased after CW treatment. Collectively, our comprehensive multi-omics study would enhance the understanding of ARG removal by CWs, offering insights for controlling antimicrobial resistance in wastewater treatment system.

Abstract:Antibiotic Resistance Genes (ARGs) are contaminants of emerging concern with marked potential to impact public and environmental health. This review focusses on factors that influence the presence, abundance, and dissemination of ARGs within Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) and associated effluents. Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (ARB) and ARGs have been detected in the influent and the effluent of WWTPs worldwide. Different levels of wastewater treatment (primary, secondary, and tertiary) show different degrees of removal efficiency of ARGs, with further differences being observed when ARGs are captured as intracellular or extracellular forms. Furthermore, routinely used molecular methodologies such as quantitative polymerase chain reaction or whole genome sequencing may also vary in resistome identification and in quantifying ARG removal efficiencies from WWTP effluents. Additionally, we provide an overview of the One Health risk assessment framework, as well as future strategies on how WWTPs can be assessed for environmental and public health impact.

Abstract:Wastewaters from different sources are complex reservoirs for the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). At present, there is no systematically comparative study on the characteristics of water quality, microbial community, and horizontal gene transfer (HGT) risk in different wastewaters. This study collected four wastewaters to compare the removal of antibiotics; the relative abundances of host bacteria, ARGs, and mobile genetic elements (MGEs); the microbial community; and HGT risks after electrochemical flow-through reaction (EFTR) process. Metagenomic sequencing analysis indicated that the relative abundance of ARGs decreased except for multidrug resistance genes and that of MGEs increased in different wastewaters after EFTR treatment. The extremely high efficiency of variation in the relative abundances of ARGs and MGEs resulted in a higher possibility of ARGs being encoded in chromosomes in surface water (SW) compared with other wastewaters. Meanwhile, the composition of bacterial community and the relative abundance of host bacteria had remarkable differences in different wastewaters. Moreover, the functional genes related to oxidative stress and DNA damage response (SOS response) were triggered in different wastewaters in varying degrees by EFTR treatment and affected the spread of ARGs. The livestock wastewater after biological treatment process (LW) had the highest proportion and lowest removal efficiency of ARGs located on the plasmid compared with other wastewaters, which increased the HGT risk. This study provided a foundation for wastewater treatment and ARGs transfer control.

Abstract:Climate change significantly contributes to water scarcity in various regions worldwide. While wastewater reuse is a crucial strategy for mitigating water scarcity, it also carries potential risks for human health due to the presence of pathogenic and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB). Antibiotic resistance represents a Public Health concern and, according to the global action plan on antimicrobial resistance, wastewater role in selecting and spreading ARB must be monitored.Our aim was to assess the occurrence of ARB, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and potential pathogenic bacteria throughout a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) designed for water reuse. Furthermore, we aimed to evaluate potential association between ARB and ARGs with antibiotics and heavy metals.The results obtained revealed the presence of ARB, ARGs and pathogenic bacteria at every stage of the WWTP. Notably, the most prevalent ARB and ARG were sulfamethoxazole-resistant bacteria (up to 7.20 log CFU mL −1 ) and sul II gene (up to 5.91 log gene copies mL −1 ), respectively. The dominant pathogenic bacteria included Arcobacter , Flavobacterium and Aeromonas . Although the abundance of these elements significantly decreased during treatment (influent vs. effluent, p < 0.05), they were still present in the effluent designated for reuse. Additionally, significant correlations were observed between heavy metal concentrations (copper, nickel and selenium) and antibiotic resistance elements (ampicillin-resistant bacteria, tetracycline-resistant bacteria, ARB total abundance and sul II) (p < 0.05).These results underscore the importance of monitoring the role of WWTP in spreading antibiotic resistance, in line with the One Health approach. Additionally, our findings suggest the need of interventions to reduce human health risks associated with the reuse of wastewater for agricultural purposes.

Abstract:The threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to human health is predicted to become a significant infectious disease. Domestic sewage and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are critical hotspots for controlling the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. A wastewater treatment system is not necessarily designed to mitigate AMR problems in wastewater. Furthermore, the presence of ARB and ARGs for a long time in WWTPs is reported as a reservoir of intracellular and extracellular ARG through horizontal gene transfer. Based on the studies, the additional membrane filtration with either microfiltration (MF) or ultrafiltration (UF) can reduce ARB and ARGs effectively through the separation mechanism. However, there are still inconclusive results when comparing ARG removal efficiencies between MBR and conventional processes. Further studies are required to clarify the effect of water qualities and membrane fouling conditions on ARG removal.
