Abstract:How does sleep affect employee effectiveness and what can employees do to remain effective on days with a lack of sleep? Drawing on the conservation of resources theory, our research expands on the cognitive (regulatory resources), affective (positive affect), and motivational (subjective vitality) mechanisms that link sleep and employee effectiveness. Furthermore, considering the crucial role of individuals’ beliefs in the spillover of sleep to work, we examine implicit theories about willpower – a mindset about the resource-draining nature of self-regulation – as a moderator of the positive relationship between sleep duration and employee effectiveness through regulatory resources availability. Two daily diary studies with a combined sample of N total = 214 employees ( N total = 1317 workdays) demonstrate the predominant role of cognitive- and affective resources in the day-specific relations between sleep at home to engagement, in-role, and extra-role performance at work. Moreover, the spillover of sleep to employee effectiveness via cognitive resources is stronger for individuals holding a limited as compared with a non-limited resource theory. This research not only expands our theoretical understanding of the psychological mechanisms that link sleep to employee effectiveness but also offers practical implications by highlighting the protective role of holding a non-limited resource theory on days with a lack of sleep.

Does Monitoring Promote or Impair Employee Job Performance and Wellbeing: A Motivational Perspective

Abstract:Using monitoring to improve employees’ job performance is increasingly common in current management practices. Yet, whether monitoring can play an effective role in enhancing employees’ performance is inconclusive in the literature. Meanwhile, researchers are increasingly discovering that monitoring has detrimental impacts on employees’ well-being, such as increasing their emotional exhaustion. To help reconcile mixed findings about monitoring’s influences on employees’ job performance (i.e., task performance and OCB) and well-being (i.e., emotional exhaustion), we adopt self-determination theory to elucidate the motivational mechanism linking monitoring to task performance, OCB and emotional exhaustion. Specifically, this study suggests that monitoring activates employees’ impression motivation and constrains their intrinsic motivation. Both motivations subsequently promote employees’ task performance and OCB. Meanwhile, impression motivation also increases employees’ emotional exhaustion, whereas intrinsic motivation reduces employees’ emotional exhaustion. Additionally, employees’ prior task performance moderates the relationship between monitoring and two motivations, such that the positive relationship between monitoring and impression motivation becomes weaker, and the negative relationship between monitoring and intrinsic motivation becomes stronger when employees’ prior task performance is high. We collected three-wave data from 504 participants and their direct supervisors at a large retail company, and the results confirmed our hypothesized relationships. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings were discussed.
The importance of sleep: Relationships between sleep quality and work demands, the prioritization of sleep and pre-sleep arousal in day-time employees

Abstract:Sleep deprivation is an often hidden problem in working adults. In this study, we evaluated self-regulation processes contributing to poor sleep patterns of full-time office employees. We investigated whether work-related demands and prioritizing sleep (in relation to other activities) predicted sleep behaviours over an 11-day period. Seventy-three adults in New Zealand completed online measures, including the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire, a measure of sleep prioritization, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Mixed-model analyses of daily data revealed that higher sleep prioritization and positive work-related emotions during a workday predicted better sleep quality that night. Cognitive demands on a workday predicted a later bedtime that night, whereas emotional demands predicted an earlier bedtime (but also an earlier waking time). Regression analyses revealed that when controlling for baseline levels of each dependent measure, pre-sleep arousal predicted fewer hours of sleep and greater sleep difficulty whereas sleep prioritization predicted a faster time getting to sleep, longer sleep and less sleep difficulty. High priority for sleep and positive emotions at work may promote sleep quality, whereas cognitive and emotional demands, or pre-sleep arousal may disrupt sleep patterns. These findings point to sleep prioritization and cognitive-emotional self-regulation skills as potential targets for work-based interventions aimed at promoting sleep.

Abstract:Although organizational research on health-related behaviors has become increasingly popular, little attention has been paid to unhealthy eating. Drawing on the self-regulation perspective, we conducted 2 daily diary studies to examine the relationships between work-related stressors, sleep quality, negative mood, and eating behaviors. Study 1 sampled 125 participants from 5 Chinese information technology companies and showed that when participants experienced higher levels of job demands in the morning, they consumed more types of unhealthy food and fewer types of healthy food in the evening. In addition, sleep quality from the previous night buffered the effect of morning job demands on evening unhealthy food consumption. Study 2 used data from 110 customer service employees from a Chinese telecommunications company and further demonstrated a positive association between morning customer mistreatment and evening overeating behaviors, as well as the buffering effect of sleep quality. Results from Study 2 also supported afternoon negative mood as a mediator linking morning customer mistreatment to evening overeating behaviors. Finally, our findings revealed that the buffering effect of sleep quality was channeled through employees' vigor in the morning, which subsequently weakened the effect of customer mistreatment on negative mood.

Abstract:This study investigates the daily dynamics between recovery experiences, sleep quality, resilience, job crafting, and long-term job performance. By building on prior research that highlights the critical roles of recovery and sleep in employee well-being and performance, we focus on job crafting as a key behavioral outcome of off-job recovery activities. Drawing on the self-regulatory strength model, we propose that recovery experiences and sleep quality replenish self-regulatory resources needed for self-control, fostering next-day job crafting through enhanced resilience. Using the experience-sampling method for 91 flight attendants, who answered two daily surveys over five days, we found a positive relationship between overnight experiences of recovery, sleep quality, and job crafting on the subsequent day, which was mediated by resilience the following morning. Additionally, daily resilience and job crafting mediated the positive impact of daily recovery experiences and sleep quality on job performance measured three months later. Notably, this study departs from previous ones by viewing job crafting as a self-regulatory behavior impacted by a cognitive self-control mechanism. Our findings underscore the importance of supporting employee recovery and sleep to facilitate job crafting and long-term performance. These insights offer practical implications for organizational policies and culture, training initiatives, and interventions aimed at enhancing employee well-being and sustained productivity.

Abstract:The interaction between sleep and work-related behaviors influence many aspects of employee performance, safety, and health as well as organizational-level success. Although it is well established that quantity and quality of sleep can affect different types of task performance and personal health, the interactions between sleep habits and organizational behaviors have received much less attention. It is important to examine how sleep habits and workplace behaviors relate and the role of the underlying circadian rhythm on the potential impact of sleep and sleepiness in the workplace. Developing a deeper understanding of how sleep habits and sleepiness impact workers and the organization can help provide the necessary background for human resource management to develop more progressive support networks for employees that benefit both the worker and the organization. Human resources and employees should emphasize the impact of good sleep and sleep habits on organizational and individual productivity and safety.

Abstract:With the current study, we investigate mechanisms linking sleep quality with work engagement. Work engagement is an affective-motivational state of feeling vigorous, absorbed, and dedicated while working. Drawing from both the effort-recovery model and the job demands-resources framework, we hypothesize that sleep quality should be positively related to work engagement via the replenishment of personal resources that become apparent in mental health and physical health. Because personal resources should gain salience especially in the face of job demands, we hypothesize that overtime as an indicator for job demands should strengthen the positive relationship between mental health and work engagement. We gathered data from 152 employees from diverse industries via an online survey. Results showed that sleep quality was positively related to work engagement ( r = 0.20, p < 0.05), and that mental health mediated this relationship (indirect effect: β = 0.23, lower limit confidence interval = 0.13, upper limit confidence interval = 0.34). However, physical health did not serve as a mediator. Overtime turned out to be significantly and positively related to work engagement ( r = 0.22, p < 0.01), replicating previous findings, but did not significantly interact with mental health or physical health in predicting work engagement. Overall, the study highlights the significance of sleep quality for employees' mental health and work engagement.

Abstract:Based on the Work–Home Resources Model and Conservation of Resources Theory, we develop dual mechanisms by which nice interactions (patients' compliments and coworkers' informational support) predict sleep quality. Specifically, we expect these nice interactions to help individuals conserve their personal energy in the form of less cognitive depletion (a cognitive process) and diminished physical fatigue (a physical process). Further, we propose employees utilise their energy resources to experience better sleep quality. To test the proposed model, we utilised an experience‐sampling method by recruiting 223 female nurses working in a regional university hospital in South Korea. Specifically, we measured nice interactions and personal resources at 3 PM on Day t and sleep quality at 5–6 AM on Day t + 1, and we administered the questionnaire for 10 consecutive days. Overall, after removing 79 invalid observations (not completing questionnaire in a timely manner), we had a final total of two‐wave 1997 daily observations from 223 nurses. Receiving more compliments from patients and more information from coworkers positively affects nurses' cognitive energy (less cognitive depletion) and physical energy (less physical fatigue), which predicts better sleep quality. Finally, results supported indirect effects of these nice interactions on sleep quality via cognitive and physical processes.

Abstract:Sustaining employees' well-being and high performance at work is a challenge for organizations in today's highly competitive environment. This study examines the dynamic reciprocal relationship between the variability in office workers' eudaimonic well-being (i.e., activity worthwhileness) and their extra-role performance. Eighty-three white-collar employees filled in a diary questionnaire twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, on four consecutive working days. The results show that eudaimonic well-being displays clear variability in a short time frame. In addition, Bayesian Multilevel Structural Equation Models (MSEMs) reveal a significant positive relationship between the levels of state eudaimonic well-being in the afternoon and the increase in the levels of state extra-role performance from that afternoon to the next morning. Moreover, the overall levels of self-reported state eudaimonic well-being across the diary measurements are significantly and positively related to the overall levels of extra-role performance assessed by the supervisor during the diary measurement. Finally, there is a significant negative relationship between the amount of intra-individual variability in state eudaimonic well-being during the week and the overall levels of self-rated state extra-role performance during the same week. These findings shed light on the dynamic nature of both the eudaimonic component of well-being and performance, highlighting the importance of eudaimonic well-being for extra-role performance and expanding the happy-productive worker thesis. The results suggest that the daily eudaimonic experience of meaning at work should complement the experience of hedonic well-being because it is an important factor in achieving better and more sustainable employee performance on a daily basis.

Abstract:Background Past research indicates that occupational stress negatively predicts health-related productivity. Simultaneously, sleep problem among workers may stem from job stress, subsequently leading to a decline in sleep quality and resulting in reduced health productivity. Therefore, this study aims to idenitify whether the sleep quality of employees functions as a mediator in the process through which job stress impacts health productivity. Objectives This study aimed to assess the status and analyze differences in quality of sleep, job stress, and health-related productivity loss (HRPL) among workers in research and development (R&D) enterprises in Minhang District, Shanghai. We also assessed the mediating effect of sleep quality on the relationship between job stress and HRPL. Methods A total of 3,216 workers in R&D firms aged between 18 and 60 years participated in this study (mean age 35.15 years; standard deviation 8.44; male-to-female ratio≈2:1). The Nakata Insomnia Questionnaire, the Chinese version of the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire revised edition, and the Chinese version of the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment Questionnaire were used in this study. And the Kruskal–Wallis test, Hierarchical Multiple Regression Analysis, and Path Analysis were utilized for data analysis in this study. Results There were significant differences in the positive detection rate of insomnia among participants according to age, educational level, marital status, position, length of service, and level of financial difficulties (all P < 0.05). We also found significant differences in the positive detection rate of HRPL among participants according to age, marital status, length of service, and level of financial difficulties (all P < 0.05); participants with insomnia scored higher for HRPL than those without insomnia (6.00 vs. 4.20, P < 0.001). Additionally, participants with job stress problems had higher HRPL than those without these issues (7.00 vs. 4.20, P < 0.001). Our findings suggest that sleep quality plays a mediating role between job stress and HRPL (all P < 0.05). Conclusions Occupational health professionals must pay particular attention to job stress, sleep quality, and their influencing factors to positively influence the wellbeing of workers while improving productivity.

Abstract:Social stressors at work may result in long-term health impairments if recovery is insufficient. In the present psychophysiological field study, we tested whether the inability to psychologically detach from work issues mediates the negative effect of social stressors at work on sleep during weekends. Sixty full-time employees participated in the study. Daily assessment included diaries on psychological detachment and continuous ambulatory actigraphy to assess psychophysiological indicators of sleep. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that enduring social stressors at work were negatively related with psychological detachment on Sunday evening and negatively related with various sleep indicators on Sunday night. Furthermore, psychological detachment from work on Sunday evening partially mediated the effect of social stressors at work on two sleep indicators. Social stressors at work may threaten recovery processes just before the working week starts.

Abstract:Sleep is a fundamental biological process essential for cognitive functioning and emotional regulation. This study investigates the effects of sleep deprivation on cognitive performance and emotional stability. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, 100 participants were divided into sleep deprivation and control groups, with cognitive and emotional assessments administered before and after sleep manipulation. Quantitative results demonstrated significant cognitive impairments in attention, memory, and executive functions among sleep-deprived individuals. Emotional assessments revealed heightened negative affect, decreased positive affect, and increased physio-logical markers of emotional arousal in the sleep deprivation group. Qualitative interviews further underscored participants' experiences of heightened irritability and mood instability. The study integrates cognitive-energetic, neurocognitive, and emotion regulation models to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these effects. The findings highlight the critical importance of adequate sleep for cognitive and emotional health and emphasize the need for public health interventions promoting better sleep hygiene.

Abstract:IntroductionSleep deprivation impairs some higher-order cognitive processes, but this impairment may reflect changes in motivation as well as changes in the cognitive capacity to perform the task, which has implications for intervention strategies. Here, we asked whether reward motivation could offset the effects of sleep deprivation on placekeeping, a higher-order cognitive process that is prevalent in performance of everyday tasks. To conduct this study under pandemic conditions, we developed a method for online data collection that promises to facilitate sleep-deprivation research more generally, by allowing for larger and more diverse samples to be collected at lower cost compared to in-person methods.MethodsIn the evening, participants joined a Zoom meeting and completed the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) and a placekeeping task (UNRAVEL). Afterwards, participants were randomly assigned to remain in the meeting and stay awake (Deprivation) or leave the meeting and sleep (Rested). Deprivation participants were monitored remotely overnight by two research assistants. Rested participants left the meeting at 00:00 and returned at 08:30. At 08:30, all participants completed the PVT and UNRAVEL again. Some participants had the opportunity to earn a monetary reward based on their morning UNRAVEL performance (Motivated) and some did not (Nonmotivated). We analyzed morning performance with a 2 (Sleep: Rested, Deprivation) x 2 (Reward: Motivated, Nonmotivated) design using evening performance as a covariate.ResultsPreliminary results from 206 participants show Deprivation participants had more placekeeping errors and lapses in the PVT than Rested participants. Motivated participants made fewer placekeeping errors after task interruption than Nonmotivated participants. The Sleep and Reward factors did not interact.ConclusionThese results suggest that motivational interventions can mitigate some effects of sleep deprivation on complex task performance. However, reward motivation affected Rested and Deprivation performance similarly rather than compensating for any effects specific to sleep deprivation. Abstract:This study builds on the affective events theory and the conservation of resources theory to propose a model that analyses an affect‐to‐behaviour‐to‐outcome route, highlighting how daily micro‐events and subsequent affective reactions lead to behaviours (performance) and cognitions (satisfaction after work), and how mental health moderates this process. Results from a 5‐day diary study, during the pandemic (N = 250, n = 1221), provided data to test the proposed affect‐to‐behaviour‐to‐outcome route. Poorer mental health buffered the positive within‐person relationship between daily micro‐events, affective reactions, performance and satisfaction after work, suggesting that high levels of mental health allowed individuals to maximise the benefits of positive daily micro‐events in their satisfaction after work via affect and performance. This study presents original research analysing how situational factors create a route through which individuals experience affective reactions that influence their work behaviour, and in turn their levels of satisfaction after work.

Abstract:The concept of emotional salary refers to the non-monetary rewards granted to workers, focusing on improving interpersonal relationships, strengthening productivity, and enhancing the competitiveness of organizations. The topic of emotional salary is still recent and lacks empirical studies demonstrating its beneficial effects for both workers (e.g., job satisfaction) and organizations (e.g., performance). Therefore, to expand knowledge about the benefits of emotional salary, the present study used the self-determination theory to hypothesize that motivation and satisfaction would serve as affective mechanisms linking emotional salary to workers' performance. Through a non-experimental correlational study, an online questionnaire was administered to 215 workers from various organizations. The results showed that emotional salary influenced performance (task, contextual, and adaptive) by increasing motivation and job satisfaction. The results also indicated evidence of a serial mediation path between emotional salary, motivation, satisfaction, and then performance. From a management perspective, considering emotional salary as an organizational resource capable of motivating and satisfying workers is a starting point for acknowledging the practical and theoretical importance of this concept, as well as a strategy to contribute to organizational sustainability.

Abstract:Sleep is essential for the proper functioning and general health of the body, playing a crucial role in body homeostasis. Given this scenario, the aim of this study was to discuss the biopsychological processes involved in maintaining sleep. It consisted of a descriptive, cross-sectional and qualitative study, characterized as a narrative literature review. The bibliographic materials were collected through search platforms such as PubMed and SciELO, using the descriptors "sleep", "sleep deprivation" and "sleep hygiene" in their Portuguese and English versions, used individually and in different combinations. It was observed that lack of sleep can lead to a series of adverse cognitive and physiological consequences and diseases. This condition poses a threat to mental and physical health, since the production of the sleep hormone melatonin is affected by prolonged exposure to screens. It was concluded that the adoption of a healthy lifestyle, with a focus on good quality sleep, is related to a better physiological, physical and psychological condition. However, it is important to pay attention to modern behaviors which have contributed to sleep disorders.
The effect of mindfulness and job demands on motivation and performance trajectories across the workweek: An entrainment theory perspective.

Abstract:Employee performance is commonly investigated as a static, one-time snapshot of prior employee behaviors. For the studies that do acknowledge that performance fluctuates over time, the timeframe decision is disconnected from theoretical underpinnings. To make this connection clearer, we draw on entrainment theory and investigate trajectories in motivation and performance across the 5-day workweek. We hypothesize that both motivational control (i.e., staying on course and sustaining effort in pursuit of goals through the redirection of attention) and performance have a declining trajectory across the workweek. Drawing on self-determination theory, we also hypothesize that trait-based mindfulness (i.e., nonjudgmental present moment attention and awareness) negatively relates to the downward trajectory in performance across the workweek via its effect on the trajectory of motivational control. Finally, we take a trait activation theory perspective, hypothesizing that mindfulness is relevant as an indirect influence on performance trajectories through motivational control trajectories only when job demands are high. We test our model using 151 full-time employees in a medical device company. We collected data from participants twice daily across the 5-day workweek. We then use these daily scores to create between-person (e.g., person-centric) trajectories to investigate the proposed relationships. The hypotheses are generally supported. There is a downward trajectory of both motivational control and performance across the workweek. Furthermore, job demands conditionally moderate the indirect effect of mindfulness on performance trajectories through motivational control trajectories. Theoretical and practical implications specific to dynamic motivation and performance, entrainment, and mindfulness literature are discussed. Workplace Surface Acting and Employee Insomnia: A Moderated Mediation Model of Psychological Detachment and Dispositional Mindfulness

Abstract:This study adopted a process-oriented approach to explore the mediating and moderating mechanisms surrounding the association between surface acting at work and sleep quality. Drawing on the stressor-detachment and transactional stress models, the current study proposed a moderated mediation model to examine whether surface acting would be associated indirectly with employee insomnia via lack of psychological detachment, and whether this indirect linkage is moderated by dispositional mindfulness. The study was conducted among 516 full-time employed hospital nurses in China over a one-year period. Results revealed that suppressed negative emotions, but not faked positive emotions, had a significant influence on employee insomnia over time, and lack of psychological detachment mediated the effect of suppressing negative emotions on insomnia. Tests of moderated mediation indicated that the mediated path was weaker for employees with higher levels of dispositional mindfulness. These findings advance our understanding of how and when surface acting negatively influences employee sleep, as well as point to implications for individual and organizational interventions.
Daily impaired detachment and short-term effects of impaired sleep quality on next-day commuting near-accidents - an ambulatory diary study

Abstract:This study investigated the short-term effects of daily recovery, that is, impaired psychological detachment from work and various actigraphical indicators of sleep quality, on near-accidents when commuting to work the next morning. Furthermore, the mediating effect of actigraphically assessed sleep quality on the relationship between impaired psychological detachment from work and near-accidents when commuting to work was analysed. Fifty-six full-time employees of a Swiss assurance company participated in the one-week study. Multilevel analyses revealed that impaired detachment was highly related to a decrease in sleep duration. Furthermore, impaired daily recovery processes, such as impaired psychological detachment from work and disturbed sleep quality, were related to commuting near-accidents. Impaired sleep quality mediated the effect of impaired psychological detachment from work on these near-accidents. Our results show that occupational safety interventions should address both impaired psychological detachment from work and sleep quality in order to prevent near accidents when commuting to work. Practitioner Summary: Commuting accidents occur frequently and have detrimental effects on employees, organisations and society. This study shows that daily lack of recovery, that is, impaired psychological detachment and impaired sleep quality, is related to near-accidents when commuting to work the next morning. Primary prevention of commuting accidents should therefore address daily lack of recovery.

Abstract:Socially prescribed perfectionism (SPP) but not self-oriented perfectionism (SOP) makes individuals vulnerable for impaired sleep quality. However, the mechanisms that link multidimensional perfectionism to varying sleep remain unclear, especially in applied settings, such as the workplace. Integrating the cognitive–affective personality system theory and the stressor–detachment model (SDM), we proposed time pressure and detachment as relevant mechanisms. We expected SPP to have a negative indirect effect on daily sleep quality through detachment and a serial mediation of time pressure and detachment. Further, we expected SOP to show ambivalent effects, displaying a negative indirect effect on daily sleep quality through detachment, but also a positive indirect effect through serial mediation. We tested our hypotheses with data from 70 employees that participated in a diary study over 5 consecutive days (day level N = 233). Results from multilevel path analyses provided support for the expected serial mediation linking SPP to impaired sleep quality. Additional exploratory analyses confirmed this serial mediation for all four components of sleep quality. Further, a direct positive effect of SOP on sleep quality was found. Our findings highlight the conjoint role of mechanisms in the work and nonwork area, that is, time pressure and subsequent detachment, for the association between SPP and sleep quality. Thus, the results suggest an active role of individuals in contributing to job stressors. We discuss personality as an additional predictor in the SDM and how organizations may include individual and organizational sources of stress in comprehensive intervention approaches.
