Abstract:Using iterative algorithms to reconstruct quantitative 3D PET data requires the computation of the system probability matrix. The pure geometrical contribution to the matrix elements can easily be approximated by the length of intersection between detected lines of response (LOR) and individual voxels. However, the natural observables are volume-based, i.e. the coincidence rates which are usually detected in tubes of response (TOR) as well as the activity concentration in each voxel refer to specific spatial fragments. Therefore, we developed a fast method for the analytical calculation of the 3D shape and volume of intersection polyhedrons to build the system matrix with an improved description of the geometrical detection probability. Additionally, we considered effects of detector blurring within the system matrix. Gaussian resolution functions have been assumed in the radial and axial direction describing migrations between adjacent TORs. Finally, exploiting intrinsic symmetry relations and the sparseness of the system matrix allowed to create an efficiently small matrix representation which could be pre-computed and completely stored in memory. Time-consuming voxel addressing calculations due to necessary symmetry operations have been completely avoided by using an octant-wise symmetrically ordered field of voxels. The above algorithm has been applied for an iterative, fully 3D reconstruction (MLEM/OSEM) of pre-corrected 3D sinograms provided by a Siemens/CTI HR+PET scanner. A comparison about the results with other established reconstruction platforms is given where our analytical volume-based approach yields a superior contrast behaviour at a lower level of noise.
Effects of Baduanjin Exercise on lung function and 6 min walk in COPD patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:COPD is a public health problem of global concern, which seriously affects the quality of life of patients and is also the third leading cause of death from non-communicable diseases. To investigate the effect of Ba duan jin exercise on lung function and the results of a 6-min walking trial in patients with stable COPD. Literature databases such as Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Chinese Biomedical Literature (CBM), CNKI, Wanfang Data and VIP were searched by computer, the search period is up to January 2024. Literature screening, quality evaluation and data extraction were carried out independently by two researchers. And use RevMan 5.3 software and StataMP 18 (64-bit) software to process the relevant outcome indicators. A total of 16 RCT studies with 1184 patients were included. The meta-analysis results showed that compared with the control group, Ba Duan Jin exercise could improve FEV1 (MD = 0.29, 95% CI (0.20, 0.37), P < 0.0001), FEV1/FVC (%) (MD = 3.86, 95% CI (2.24, 5.47), P < 0.00001), and 6-min walking distance (MD = 45.41, 95% CI (33.93, 56.89), P < 0.00001) in stable COPD patients. The results of subgroup analysis based on the duration of the intervention cycle, research quality, and intervention frequency showed that periodic Ba Duan Jin exercise can significantly improve the relevant lung function levels to varying degrees. At the same time, the intervention effect of Ba Duan Jin exercise during the implementation process is also affected by the duration of the exercise cycle, exercise frequency, and the completion of the exercise plan. Ba Duan Jin exercise has a positive improvement effect on lung function and 6-min walking distance in stable COPD patients. In the process of exercise implementation, attention should be paid to cultivating exercise habits, stabilizing and improving attendance rates, and strictly implementing training techniques to achieve the best clinical outcomes for these patients.
Effect of Traditional Chinese Exercises on Patients with Chronic Heart Failure (TCE-HF): A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Abstract:Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation is safe and effective for chronic heart failure (CHF) patients. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of traditional Chinese exercise (TCE) on patients with CHF and the impact of exercise types and duration. Evaluation of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of TCE in patients with CHF published since 1997 from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, Chongqing VIP, Wanfang Databases, and the China National Knowledge was performed. A total of 41 RCTs, including 3209 patients with CHF, were included. It showed that TCE significantly increased 6-min walk distance (6MWD) [mean difference (MD) = 72.82 m, p < 0.001] and left ventricular ejection fraction (MD = 5.09%, p < 0.001), whereas reduced B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) (MD = -56.80 pg/mL, p < 0.001), N-terminal pro-BNP (MD = -174.94 pg/mL, p < 0.05), and Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire scores (MD = -11.31, p < 0.001). However, no significant difference was found in the effects of TCE on peak oxygen consumption. The increase in TCE weekly duration and program duration significantly improved 6MWD (MD = 71.91 m, p < 0.001; MD = 74.11 m, p < 0.001). The combination of TCE and conventional aerobic exercise significantly improved 6MWD (MD = 19.86 m, p < 0.005). TCE improves exercise capacity, cardiac function, and quality of life in patients with CHF, which might be an optimal and available pattern of exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation.
Effects of different traditional Chinese exercises on pulmonary function in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a network meta-analysis

Abstract:Objective: Traditional Chinese exercises (Taichi, Wuqinxi, Liuzijue, and Baduanjin) are considered effective alternative treatments for improving symptoms in the stable phase of COPD. However, the most effective exercise remains unknown. This study compared the effectiveness of different traditional Chinese exercises on pulmonary function in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) using a network meta-analysis. Methods: From database establishment until September 2023, eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were searched. Two reviewers performed the risk of bias assessment of the included studies using the Cochrane Collaboration tool, and the evidence level was suggested using the GRADE system. Results: Fifty-seven studies comprising 4294 patients were included. The results of the network meta-analysis show that Baduanjin was most effective in improving the forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1). However, Liuzijue significantly improved the first-second forced vital capacity percentage of expected value (FEV1%) and the ratio of the forced expiratory volume in the first second to the forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC). The probability ranking results indicated that Liuzijue was the most effective, followed by Baduanjin, Wuqinxi, and Taichi. Subgroup analysis in conjunction with intervention duration revealed that Liuzijue had a significant advantage over other interventions for improving FEV1, FEV1%, and FEV1/FVC within 6 months and improved FEV1% and FEV1/FVC for ≥ 6 months. Moreover, Subgroup analysis based on baseline pulmonary function revealed that Liuzijue had a significant advantage over other interventions for improving FEV1% within severe and moderate groups. Finally, Subgroup analysis based on the frequency of interventions showed that Liuzijue was still more effective in improving FEV1, FEV1%, and FEV1/FVC in the ≥ three times one week. Conclusion: Liuzijue was more effective than Taichi, Wuqinxi, Liuzijue, and Baduanjin in improving pulmonary function in patients with stable COPD.
Updated Meta-Analysis Assessing Effects of Baduanjin on Cardiopulmonary Functions of Patients with Coronary Heart Disease

Abstract:Background. Baduanjin is a kind of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, but its effect on the cardiac rehabilitation (CR) of patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) is controversial. Furthermore, the small sample size of a single study and the inconsistent selection of evaluation indicators among different studies all promote the necessity of conducting a meta-analysis. Objective. This meta-analysis aims to explore whether Baduanjin can effectively improve the cardiopulmonary function in patients with CHD and to assess the extrapolation of the results. Methods. Both English and Chinese databases were used for literature retrieval. The Cochrane Collaboration tool was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the included literature. A weighted mean difference and a 95% confidence interval were used to assess the effects of Baduanjin on cardiopulmonary function based on multiple CR indicators. Cochran's Q and I2 tests were used for the heterogeneity test. A funnel plot and an Egger test were used to evaluate publication bias. Results. After literature retrieval, a total of 12 literature papers were included in this meta-analysis, but their methodological quality was unsatisfactory. By comparing differences between CHD patients with and without Baduanjin, we found that levels of 6MWT, LVEF, NT-proBNP, VO2, peak VO2, MVV, and VE, AT were significantly improved in the experimental group, but heterogeneity exists among included studies. Results of subgroup analyses were consistent with combined estimates and suggested a significant effect of Baduanjin on LVEF. The Egger test indicated no significant publication bias. Conclusion. Baduanjin is beneficial to CR in CHD patients, but multiple region-based high-quality studies are necessary to verify the results.

Effects of Baduanjin exercise on quality-of-life and exercise capacity in patients with heart failure: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Purpose: Exercise training is an efficient non-pharmacological intervention for patients with heart failure (HF). This study aimed to objectively evaluate the effects of Baduanjin exercise on the quality of life (QOL) and exercise capacity in patients with HF. Methods: PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang data were searched from the date of their inception until 30 September 2022. All randomised controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effects of Baduanjin exercise on QOL and exercise capacity in patients with HF were selected. The primary outcomes were QOL, assessed using the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ), and exercise capacity, evaluated using the 6-min walking test (6-MWT). A meta-analysis was performed by comparing the MLHFQ domain scores. Review Manager 5.3 and Stata 14.0, were used for the data analysis. Results: Baduanjin exercise showed a favourable improvement of the overall QOL (mean difference = -8.25; 95% confidence interval: -13.62 to -2.89; P = 0.003) and exercise capacity (mean difference = 118.49; 95% confidence interval: 52.57 to 184.41; P = 0.0004). Meta-analyses of the MLHFQ domain score indicated that Baduanjin exercise significantly improved the patients' physical (mean difference = -2.83; 95% confidence interval: -3.76, -1.90; P < 0.00001), emotional (mean difference = -2.52; 95% confidence interval: -3.67 to -1.37; P < 0.0001), and general QOL (mean difference = -2.61; 95% confidence interval: -5.17 to -0.06; P = 0.05), based on the decrease in the MLHFQ domain score. Marked statistical heterogeneity (I2> 70%) was observed for all the QOL and exercise capacity outcomes. Conclusions: Baduanjin exercise is a safe, feasible, and acceptable intervention that can improve the QOL and exercise capacity in patients with HF. However, more RCTs with rigorous research designs are needed to assist in the rehabilitation of such patients.
Traditional Chinese exercise in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: An overview of systematic reviews

Abstract:This study aims to critically reassess existing systematic reviews (SR) on Traditional Chinese Exercises (TCE) for treating Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The primary objectives include synthesizing available evidence, evaluating the methodological quality of reviews and overall evidence, and providing comprehensive insights into the effectiveness of different TCE types in managing COPD. Sinomed, CNKI, VIP, Wanfang, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were searched from inception to April 2023 for SR literature on the treatment of COPD with TCE. The extracted data from the included SRs encompassed various aspects such as general information, study population, intervention measures, meta-analysis results, and conclusions. The methodological quality of the included SRs was assessed using the AMSTAR II tool. Additionally, the GRADE tool was used to determine the evidence level of outcome indicators. This study included 17 SRs and 4 types of TCE. The CCA was 0.041, indicating a slight overlap between the primary studies. Notably, one study was rated as low quality on the AMSTAR II scale, while the rest were classified as critically low quality. The results from the GRADE evaluation revealed 26 pieces of very low-quality evidence, 55 pieces of low-quality evidence, and 17 pieces of moderate-quality evidence. The moderate-quality evidence suggests that Liuzijue effectively improves TCM syndrome scores in patients with COPD. Additionally, low-quality evidence suggests that Liuzijue improves patients’ lung function (FEV1, FVC) and quality of life (CAT, MRC/mMRC). Similarly, low-quality evidence suggests that Baduanjin can improve patients’ lung function (FEV1%, FVC) and quality of life (SGRQ). Low-quality evidence also suggests that Health Qigong can significantly improve patients’ exercise endurance (6MWD). No SR reported TCE-related adverse reactions. TCE interventions are effective and safe in the treatment of COPD. Different types of TCE have varying effects on outcomes in COPD patients. However, these findings are limited by the generally low methodological and evidence quality of the included SRs. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to improve study designs to obtain higher-quality clinical evidence and to strictly follow SR protocols.

Network Meta-Analysis of the Effects of Different Types of Traditional Chinese Exercises on Pulmonary Function, Endurance Capacity and Quality of Life in Patients With COPD

Abstract:Background In recent years, Chinese and international studies have reported that traditional Chinese exercises (TCEs) have good therapeutic effects on pulmonary function, endurance capacity, and quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, only a few studies have reported the differences in the efficacy of different TCEs in the treatment of COPD. Objective The objective of this study is to compare the effects of five TCEs on patients with COPD, including Taijiquan (TJQ), Baduanjin (BDJ), Liuzijue (LZJ), Wuqinxi (WQX), and Yijinjing (YJJ). Methods All randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of TCEs for patients with COPD were searched in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Excerpt Medica Database (EMBASE), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Biology Medicine database (CBM), China Scientific Journal Database (VIP), and Wanfang database. The search period was from the establishment of each database to August 16, 2021. The quality of the included studies was assessed according to the Cochrane handbook of systematic review, and the network meta-analysis was conducted with R 4.0.2 (Ross Ihaka, Auckland, New Zealand) and ADDIS 1.16.8 (Gert vsn Valkenhoef, Groningen, Netherlands). The effect size was evaluated using the mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results A total of 53 RCTs involving 3,924 patients were included. The network meta-analysis results showed that WQX was the most effective in improving FEV 1 /FVC% score and 6-MWT score. The difference was statistically significant (MD = 8.62, 95% CI 4.46 to 13.04, P < 0.05), (MD = 74.29, 95% CI 47.67 to 102.24, P < 0.05). However, YJJ was the most effective in reducing the CAT score, and the difference was statistically significant (MD = −8.38, 95% CI −13.24 to −3.28, P < 0.05). Conclusion The existing evidence shows that WQX has advantages over other TCEs in improving pulmonary function and endurance capacity in patients with COPD, while YJJ has advantages in improving the quality of life. Although TCEs show no significant adverse effects, more large-scale, double-blind, and high-quality RCTs are needed in the future to verify the findings of this study. Effect of Baduanjin on pulmonary rehabilitation outcomes in patients with moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a multi-center randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Abstract Background: Effect of Baduanjin, as a traditional Chinese mindful movement, on patients with moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), was still unknown. The aim of our study was to evaluate its efficiency on pulmonary function and exercise capacity in moderate COPD patients. Method: A multi-center randomized controlled trial about moderate COPD patients were collected from ten hospitals in Shanghai. Tri-Ball® Respiratory training was used as the control PR intervention in this trail to evaluate the efficiency of Baduanjin. After signing informed consent, all participants recruited were followed a two-week run-in period. Participants were randomly assigned into four groups, namely Baduanjin alone, Tri-Ball® Respiratory training alone, Baduanjin combined with respiratory training, and the control group. Each group lasted for 12 weeks. The outcome assessments were conducted at four time points, namely at the 4 th week and 8 th week during the intervention, at the end of 12-week pulmonary rehabilitation program, and at the end of the 24-week follow up. Result: A total of 240 participants were recruited in this prospective randomized controlled trail. After exclusion, 217 moderate COPD patients were analyzed in this study. After 12 weeks, Baduanjin traing showed improvement in pulmonary function (percent of FEV1 predicted, FEV1 pred%) and dyspnea (modified British medical research council questionnaire, mMRC scale), exercise capacity (six-minute walk distance, 6MWD), and therapeutic efficiency (COPD assessment test, CAT) in moderate COPD patients. Banduanjin presented better PR results than the control. Besides, combining Baduanjin with additional inspiratory muscle training presented better PR result than banduanjin or inrespiratory muscle exercise alone. The positive effect on parameter of pulmonary function, exercise capacity and therapeutic efficiency were perceived by subjects and continued to maintain after 24-week follow up. Conclusion: The results of this trial indicated that traditional Baduanjin exercise could prevent COPD lung function deterioration, and provide a simple, and daily pulmonary rehabilitation measure for the patients with moderate COPD. The Effect of Tai Chi on the Pulmonary Rehabilitation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:The effectiveness of Tai Chi for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) so far is unclear. The present systematic review aimed to determine the influence of Tai Chi among people with COPD.METHODS:We searched six electronic databases for relevant studies in September, 2019. The methods of standard meta-analysis were used for identifying relevant studies, quality appraisal, and synthesis. The primary outcomes were six-minute walking distance (6MWD), percentage predicted forced expiratory flow volume in the first second (%PredFEV1), and St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) score.RESULTS:A total of 23 studies including 1663 participants were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled data showed that the Tai Chi group was associated with a significant improvement in 6MWD [mean difference (MD) 40.83 m, 95% CI: 32.47 to 49.19], %PredFEV1 (MD 1.67%, 95% CI: 0.41 to 2.93), SGRQ score (MD -6.57, 95% CI: -10.17 to -2.98), and Chronic Respiratory Disease Questionnaire (CRQ) (MD 1.60, 95% CI: 0.89 to 2.30) relative to the blank control population. When compared with breathing exercises, the 6MWD was significantly enhanced with Tai Chi (MD 14.15 m, 95% CI: 3.76 to 24.53). Finally, when compared with breathing and walking exercises, Tai Chi was associated with a significant improvement in 6MWD (MD 7.68 m, 95% CI: 2.28 to 13.09 m) and SGRQ score (MD -6.31, 95% CI: -9.13 to -1.48).CONCLUSIONS:Tai Chi may have the potential to reduce dyspnoea, enhance exercise capacity, and improve the quality of life in COPD patients. People with COPD may obtain benefit from practicing Tai Chi.

Abstract:Background Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic condition characterized primarily by airflow obstruction, significantly impacting patients’ quality of life. Traditional mind–body exercises, as a non-pharmacological intervention for COPD, have become a new research focus. Objective To assess the impact of traditional mind–body exercises (Tai Chi, Qigong, Yoga) on pulmonary function, exercise capacity, and quality of life in COPD patients. Additionally, to identify the most suitable form of traditional mind–body exercise for different indicators. Methods Searches were conducted in databases such as Web of Science, PubMed, EBSCOhost, CNKI, etc., to collect randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the intervention of traditional mind–body exercises (Tai Chi, Yoga, Qigong) in COPD. The Cochrane evaluation tool was applied for methodological quality assessment of the included literature. Statistical analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed using Revman 5.4 software, while publication bias was assessed using R software. Results This study included 23 studies with a total of 1862 participants. Traditional mind–body exercises improved patients’ FEV1% index (WMD = 4.61, 95%CI [2.99, 6.23]), 6-min walk distance (SMD = 0.83, 95%CI [0.55, 1.11]), and reduced patients’ SGRQ score (SMD = −0.79, 95%CI [−1.20, −0.38]) and CAT score (SMD = −0.79, 95%CI [−1.20, −0.38]). Qigong showed the most significant improvement in FEV1% and 6MWT, while Tai Chi primarily improved 6MWT, and the effect of Yoga was not significant. Sensitivity analysis indicated stable and reliable research conclusions. Conclusion Traditional mind–body exercises are effective rehabilitation methods for COPD patients, significantly improving pulmonary function, exercise capacity, and quality of life. They are suitable as complementary interventions for standard COPD treatment. Abstract:BACKGROUND Baduanjin has been applied in health and rehabilitation and gained a growing number of practitioners both in home and abroad.To explore the effect of home based and video guided PR training, our research determined to evaluate Baduanjin on moderate COPD patients and explore its synergy effect with IMT in inducing improvement in pulmonary function, exercise capacity and quality of life. OBJECTIVE We cooperated Baduanjin as a pulmonary rehabilitation intervention for patients with moderate COPD. We evaluated its efficiency on pulmonary function, exercise capacity, quality of life in moderate COPD patients. METHODS This was a multi-centered, prospective, randomized controlled trial. Moderate COPD patients were collected from ten hospitals in Shanghai. After a two-week run-in period, all eligible participants were randomly assigned into Baduanjin training group, Tri-Ball® Respiratory training group, Baduanjin combined with respiratory training group and control group. The outcome assessments were conducted at four time points, namely at the 4th week and 8th week during the intervention, after 12-week pulmonary rehabilitation program and 3-month follow up. RESULTS A total of 240 participants were recruited in this study. 217 moderate COPD patients were analyzed in this study. After 12-week PR intervention, improvement was noticed in pulmonary function (FEV1%), exercise capacity (6MWD) and quality of life (CAT, SGRQ and T.C.M score) in Baduanjin training group when compared to the control group (P<0.05). Combining Baduanjin with additional inspiratory muscle training exerted better result than Banduanjin or inrespiratory muscle training alone (P<0.05). Improved performances after 12-week PR intervention were maintained after 3-month follow up in this research. Compared with the control group, drastically more percentage of participants with mMRC≤2 in combination training group was observed (mMRC≤2, 55(100%) vs 44(83.02%); mMRC＞2, 0(0%) vs 9 (16.98%), P＜0.01). CONCLUSIONS The results of this trial suggested that, Baduanjin training, as a simple daily pulmonary rehabilitation maneuver, could prevent the deterioration of pulmonary function in COPD patients and associated with improvement in exercise capacity and quality of life. Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The present systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) aimed to investigate the effects of pulmonary rehabilitation in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).METHODS: The RCTs of pulmonary rehabilitation programs published between 1999 and 2021 were retrieved from electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase). Two reviewers independently assessed the topical relevance and trial quality and extracted data for meta-analysis using the Stata software version 14.0.RESULTS: A total of 39 trials involving 2,397 participants with COPD were evaluated. We found that patients who received pulmonary rehabilitation program had significant improvement in the 6-min walk test (6MWT), St. George Respiratory Questionnaire score, and the modified British Medical Research Council score as compared to those who received usual care. Yoga and Tai Chi showed significant improvement in the forced expiratory volume (FEV1)% in 1 s predicted value. However, no significant difference was detected in the modified Borg score, forced vital capacity (FVC), and FEV1/FVC predicted value between the pulmonary rehabilitation and usual care groups.CONCLUSION: Yoga and Tai Chi showed a significant improvement in the FEV1% predicted value. Abstract:The mutual coupling between two elementary sources exciting a substrate integrated waveguide feed is analyzed. The feed consists of two partially reflecting grids made by vertical metallic pins connecting the upper and lower metallic plates of a parallel plate waveguide. The sources are the inner conductor of a probe-like transition. The dispersion diagram of the structure is derived by finding the poles of the current expression (in the spectral domain) on the partially reflecting grids. Two leaky-wave modes are found as a function of the geometrical parameters of the partially reflecting grids. It is shown that, by properly choosing the geometrical dimensions of the partially reflecting grids, the leaky-wave modes can be used to opportunely shape the field launched inside the parallel plate waveguide and considerably reduce the mutual coupling between the sources. The same results in terms of mutual coupling can not be achieved with a single reflecting grid, justifying the use of the proposed solution.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Tai Chi is a systematic whole body movement developed in ancient China. It plays an increasingly important role in the field of pulmonary rehabilitation for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Our review aimed to explore the impact of Tai Chi on the physical and mental health of patients with COPD.METHODS: We searched several English and Chinese databases and used the combination of subject words and free words to search for available literature from the establishment of the library until August 28, 2018. Two researchers screened studies and collected the data independently. The study inclusion criteria included: (I) patients diagnosed with COPD; (II) Tai Chi or Tai Chi Qigong as an intervention in addition to routine treatment; (III) routine treatment with or without exercises as control group. The primary outcomes were lung function, exercise capacity and health status; (IV) randomized controlled trials.RESULTS: Sixteen articles were included from 2009 to 2018 (n=1,096). The average time duration of Tai Chi program was 53.4 minutes each session, 4.13 sessions a week for a total of 4.13 months. Comparing with control group, Tai Chi group improved some lung function (forced volume capacity: mean difference =0.12, 95% CI: 0.03-0.21), (forced expiratory volume in 1s: mean difference =0.15, 95% CI: 0.08-0.21), enhanced 6-minute walking distance score (mean difference =30.78, 95% CI: 15.15-46.42), decreased COPD Assessment Test score (mean difference =-5.00, 95% CI: -7.51 to -2.50), decreased St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire score (mean difference =-8.66, 95% CI: -14.60 to -2.72), enhanced Chronic Respiratory Disease Questionnaire score (mean difference =2.16, 95% CI: 1.49-2.83), decreased Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale score(anxiety: mean difference =-1.04, 95% CI: -1.58 to -0.51; depression: mean difference =-1.25, 95% CI: -1.77 to -0.73). Comparing with exercise group, Tai Chi group statistically enhanced 6-minute walking distance score (mean difference =7.77, 95% CI: 2.63-12.91).CONCLUSIONS: Tai Chi may represent an appropriate alternative or complement to standard rehabilitation programs. However, whether Tai Chi is better than pulmonary rehabilitation exercise has not been determined.

Abstract:To explore the therapeutic effect of aerobic exercise nursing plans based on target heart rate in cardiopulmonary exercise tests on male patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This study recruited 90 male patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who met specific screening criteria and were evenly divided into a control group and an experimental group based on a random number table. The control group received respiratory training based on the target heart rate in the cardiopulmonary exercise test, while the experimental group received aerobic exercise based on the target heart rate in the cardiopulmonary exercise test. Both groups received 12 weeks of exercise each. Cardiopulmonary function tests showed that peak oxygen consumption (peak VO2), anaerobic threshold (AT), forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and the FEV1/FVC ratio in the test group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p < 0.05); furthermore, the carbon dioxide ventilation equivalent (VE/VCO2) slope was significantly lower than that in the control group (p < 0.05). The 6MWT of the test group was significantly higher than that in the control group (p < 0.05). The CAT score, Borg score and scores related to the symptoms, activities, and impacts related to quality-of-life were significantly reduced after intervention (p < 0.05). Aerobic exercise based on cardiopulmonary exercise testing can improve the health status, quality of life and prognosis of COPD patients.

Abstract:Background and purpose: Chinese mind-body exercise-Baduanjin has received increasing attention for health promotion among middle-aged and older adults in China, but there is a lack of high-quality evidence on its effectiveness. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of Baduanjin on physical function in middle-aged and older adults. Methods: Seven electronic databases were searched for articles published before 22 June 2021 with the keywords Baduanjin exercise combined with physical-function-related outcomes. Risk of bias was assessed in the included studies, and data were analyzed using Review Manager software V5.3. Results: Fifteen articles, including 14 randomized controlled trials, were included in this study. The results of the meta-analysis showed that Baduanjin significantly improved muscle strength (grip strength: SMD = 0.63, 95% CI 0.22 to 1.04, p = 0.003), balance ability (timed up-and-go test score: MD = -2.21, 95% CI -3.91 to -0.51, p = 0.01; one-leg stand test score: MD = 3.75, 95% CI 1.96 to 5.55, p < 0.0001; Berg balance scale score: MD = 4.16, 95% CI 2.49 to 5.83, p < 0.00001; strengthening Romberg's test result: SMD = 1.02, 95% CI 0.17 to 1.86, p = 0.02); and cardiorespiratory fitness (diastolic blood pressure: MD = -3.62, 95% CI -3.95 to -3.30, p < 0.00001; resting heart rate: MD = -1.30, 95% CI -1.57 to -1.03, p < 0.00001; step test: MD = 4.25, 95% CI 0.76 to 7.74, p = 0.02). No adverse events were reported. Conclusions: Baduanjin exercise may be an effective intervention to improve physical function in the middle-aged and elderly population. However, more RCTs with larger sample sizes and more rigorous research designs are needed in the future to confirm the results.
