Abstract:Ion transport in nanochannels attracts increasing attention with the advance of nanotechnology, where ion rectification has been intensively studied due to its diode-like electrokinetic behavior. However, the electrochemical interface in most ion rectification is not uniform but involves asymmetric-charged characteristics that offer new degrees of electrical double layer (EDL) confinement. Herein, we investigate the ion transport in coupling asymmetric charged nanochannel to evaluate how the asymmetric geometry and surface charge influences the ion rectification performance. The results show that at low surface charge gradient, the coupling effect enhances ion rectification performance. While at high surface charge gradient, an anomalous electrokinetic behavior is observed that coupling effect deteriorates ion rectification performance. Further analysis discloses that the enhancement-deterioration transition threshold depends on the coordination mechanism of asymmetric geometry and surface charge. It is found that the asymmetric geometry shaped nanochannel with low surface charge gradient and homogeneous geometry shaped nanochannel with high surface charge gradient have the better ion rectification performance. This work fills the gap in understanding the coupling asymmetry effect on ion rectification, providing the useful guidance to design nanofluidic energy devices.

Abstract:Coupled Poisson-Nernst-Planck and Stokes simulations demonstrate the operating principles of using electrical biases in dual-gated nano-fluidic channels to create localized and tunable solution zones of either depleted or accumulated ions. Scaling studies reveal that such ion modulations overcome the limit of counter-ion screening and remain effective even for channel widths greatly exceeding the Debye screening length. The underlying mechanism is attributed to the transport-induced de-screening of gating potentials.

Abstract:Since the concentration of target molecules contained in most reagents in analytical chemistry experiments is lower than the minimum concentration required for subsequent detection, it is necessary for sample enrichment. Electrokinetic trapping that utilizes the principle of ion concentration polarization to achieve biomacromolecular enrichment is the most efficient. In this paper, based on the Poisson–Nernst–Plank equation, a novel design of nanochannel structure in a micro–nanofluidic preconcentrator for electrokinetic ion enrichment is carried out by numerical simulation. The results show that the enrichment process can be divided into three stages: enrichment generation, enrichment promotion and enrichment breakdown when the applied voltage is increased. Importantly, by comparing the six different structure nanochannels (straight line type, square wave type, rectangular type, circle type, zigzag type and multi-wave type), we found that the enrichment ratio produced by the rectangular nanochannel is the highest of the six nanochannels, which is 20.7 times. Rectangular nanochannel requires the lowest applied voltage to achieve the highest enrichment ratio. This work provides a novel design method and theoretical basis for the design of detection equipment in ultra-low concentration molecular detection tasks.

Abstract:At present, little attention has been paid to the ion current rectification (ICR) performance in the bilayer nanochannel with non-uniform charge distribution, which has the similar asymmetrical property with the conical nanochannel. In this work, we have established the ions transport model in the bilayer nanochannel with the coupled Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations. Four configuration types bilayer nanochannel are compared on the ion rectification performance. The results show that asymmetrical geometry without the surface charge cannot induce ICR and the existence of surface charge is necessary. Besides, the config.3 has the best ICR performance and the physical mechanisms are discussed in detail. It is found that the ICR performance can be enhanced by regulating the surface charge density, geometry parameters and ion concentration. The ICR ratio increases as the absolute surface charge density increases and the effect is more significant to the change of left nanopore. When the total length of the bilayer nanochannel is fixed, the ICR ratio increases first and then decreases with the increasing length of the left nanopore. In addition, the forward current is more sensitive to the change of diameter of left nanopore and the reverse current is more sensitive to the change of diameter of right nanopore. When the bulk concentration varies, the ICR ratio decreases with the increasing concentration. The research results provide useful information for ions transport control and optimization of micro/nano fluidic devices.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a new strategy to enhance ion transport in nanofluidic systems using counter-charged nanochannels, where half of the channels are positively changed while the other half are negatively charged. Molecular dynamics simulations and experiments are conducted to demonstrate the idea. Simulations show that the ionic current for the proposed system can be 5.8 times higher than that in the traditional fluidic systems, i.e., uniformly charged systems. The enhancement is caused by the separate transport of cations and anions in negatively and positively charged channels, respectively, for which the effective energy barrier for the ion transport is low. Experiments are carried out to confirm the proposed method. The results in this work provide helpful information for the design of certain energy systems, such as batteries and electrodes.

Abstract:<p>The asymmetric ion transport in the nanoconfined space, similar to that of natural ion channels, has attracted broad interest in sensor, energy conversion, and other related fields. Among these systems, the surface charge plays an important role in regulating ion transport behaviors. Herein, this surface charge-regulated asymmetric ion transport behavior is systematically explored in the nanoconfined space and the influence on the performance of nanofluidic energy conversion system. The ion transport behaviors in the nanoconfined space are classified into pure diffusion, electrical double layer, and the polarization controlled state. The asymmetric solution environment or surface charge distribution induces asymmetric ion transport behavior which is largely controlled by the low concentration side. The ion-selectivity and the energy conversion performance can be effectively enhanced by improving the local apparent surface charge (more active sites and higher charge strength) or introducing a selective layer with dense surface charge on the low concentration side. These material design concepts for asymmetric ion transport are further supported by both simulation and experiment. The results provide a significant comprehension for ion behaviors in nanoconfined space and the development of high-performance energy storage and conversion systems.</p>

Abstract:With the further development of nanotechnology, electrokinetic ion rectification (ICR) is receiving increasing attention. Since the chemical equilibrium boundary is more suitable for expressing the wall charging characteristics and the coincidence of asymmetric temperature with ICR, we first propose an ICR ion transport model that couples the chemical equilibrium boundary with asymmetric temperature. In this work, ICR under different electrical boundary conditions is studied. The effects of membrane thermal conductivity, solution pH, and geometric conditions on the rectification performance are further explored in combination with surface charge and temperature dependence. The results show that the rectification ratio of the constant σ model and constant ζ model has a significant deviation compared to the multi-ion model, and the electrical boundary conditions can be simplified by changing the external conditions. By controlling the thermal conductivity of the membrane, the distribution of temperature difference within the reservoir or nanochannel can be determined, which affects the enrichment or depletion of ions in the nanochannel and ultimately achieves the goal of optimizing the rectification ratio. The optimal ICR ratio can be obtained by adjusting pH, and optimizing geometric conditions can significantly improve rectification performance. These studies provide helpful information for ion transport control and optimization of micro/nanofluid devices.

Abstract:Ion transport in nanochannels of a size comparable to that of hydrated ions exhibits unique properties due to the synergistic effect of various forces. Here, we design a nanochannel/ion channel composite (NIC) membrane that shows a high ion current rectification (ICR) ratio in different electrolytes. Experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that the synergistic effect of electrostatic interaction and ionic dehydration plays an important role in regulating the ICR behavior of the NIC membrane. We find that electrostatic attraction between ions and the channel surface in the ultraconfined space increases the probability of ionic dehydarion, resulting in different dehydration energy costs for different ions. This further alters the driving force for ion transport and thus regulates ICR of the NIC membrane. This work provides fundamental knowledge of ion transport in ion channels, which aids in the understanding of the function of biological systems and the design of high-performance nanochannel devices.

Abstract:Both scientists and engineers are interested in the design and fabrication of synthetic nanofluidic architectures that mimic the gating functions of biological ion channels. The effort to build such structures requires interdisciplinary efforts at the intersection of chemistry, materials science, and nanotechnology. Biological ion channels and synthetic nanofluidic devices have some structural and chemical similarities, and therefore, they share some common features in regulating the traverse ionic flow. In the past decade, researchers have identified two asymmetric ion transport phenomena in synthetic nanofluidic structures, the rectified ionic current and the net diffusion current. The rectified ionic current is a diode-like current-voltage response that occurs when switching the voltage bias. This phenomenon indicates a preferential direction of transport in the nanofluidic system. The net diffusion current occurs as a direct product of charge selectivity and is generated from the asymmetric diffusion through charged nanofluidic channels. These new ion transport phenomena and the elaborate structures that occur in biology have inspired us to build functional nanofluidic devices for both fundamental research and practical applications. In this Account, we review our recent progress in the design and fabrication of biomimetic solid-state nanofluidic devices with asymmetric ion transport behavior. We demonstrate the origin of the rectified ionic current and the net diffusion current. We also identify several influential factors and discuss how to build these asymmetric features into nanofluidic systems by controlling (1) nanopore geometry, (2) surface charge distribution, (3) chemical composition, (4) channel wall wettability, (5) environmental pH, (6) electrolyte concentration gradient, and (7) ion mobility. In the case of the first four features, we build these asymmetric features directly into the nanofluidic structures. With the final three, we construct different environmental conditions in the electrolyte solutions on either side of the nanochannel. The novel and well-controlled nanofluidic phenomena have become the foundation for many promising applications, and we have highlighted several representative examples. Inspired by the electrogenic cell of the electric eel, we have demonstrated a proof-of-concept nanofluidic reverse electrodialysis system (NREDS) that converts salinity gradient energy into electricity by means of net diffusion current. We have also constructed chirality analysis systems into nanofluidic architectures and monitored these sensing events as the change in the degree of ionic current rectification. Moreover, we have developed a biohybrid nanosystem, in which we reconstituted the F0F1-ATPase on a liposome-coated, solid-state nanoporous membrane. By applying a transmembrane proton concentration gradient, the biohybrid nanodevice can synthesize ATP in vitro. These findings have improved our understanding of the asymmetric ion transport phenomena in synthetic nanofluidic systems and offer innovative insights into the design of functional nanofluidic devices.

Abstract:The detection of ultra-low concentration of biomacromolecules remains the focus of research in micro-nanofluidic systems. Sample enrichment is primarily targeted at very low concentration of sample detection tasks. The use of ion concentration polarization principle is the most efficient means to solve the problem of electrokinetic ion enrichment. In this paper, numerical simulation of nano-electrokinetic ion enrichment in a micro-nanofluidic preconcentrator with nanochannel’s Cantor fractal wall structure was performed based on Poisson–Nernst–Planck equation combined with the Navier–Stokes equation. The results show that reducing the initial length L0, increasing the initial height h0, increasing the fractal step n and using the unstaggered structure in the Cantor fractal principle can increase the ion enrichment concentration and peak voltage. The initial ion concentration is 0.1 mol/m3. When the applied voltage is 30 V and the initial height h0 increases from 35 to 45 nm, the ion enrichment concentration drastically increases from 1.007 to 1.410 mol/m3 by 40%. This study provides a theoretical basis and a novel design method for improving the sensitivity of micro-nanofluidic chips and the design of ultra-low concentration sample testing equipment.

Abstract:Biological ion channels can realize delicate mass transport under complicated physiological conditions. Artificial nanochannels can achieve biomimetic ion current rectification (ICR), gating, and selectivity that are mostly performed in pure salt solutions. Synthetic nanochannels that can function under mixed ion systems are highly desirable, yet their performances are hard to be compared to those under pure systems. Seeking out the potential reasons by investigating the effect of mixed-system components on the ion-transport properties of the constructed nanochannels seems necessary and important. Herein, we report the effect of anions with different charges and sizes on the ICR properties of positively charged nanochannels. Among the investigated anions, the low-valent anions showed no impact on the ICR direction, while the high-valent component ferrocyanide [Fe(CN)64-] caused significant ICR inversion. The ICR inversion mechanism is evidenced to result from the adsorption of Fe(CN)64--induced surface charge reversal, which relates to solution concentration, pH conditions, and nanochannel sizes and applies to both aminated and quaternized nanochannels that are positively charged. Noticeably, Fe(CN)64- is found to interfere with the transport of protein molecules in the nanochannel. This work points out that the ion species from mixed systems would potentially impact the intrinsic ICR properties of the nanochannels. Replacing highly charged counterions with organic components would be promising in building up future nanochannel-based mass transport systems running under mixed systems.

Abstract:A new ionic current rectification device responsive to a broad range of pH stimuli has been fabricated using porous anodic alumina membrane with tailor-made branching nanochannel array. The asymmetric geometry is achieved by changing oxidation voltage using a simple two-step anodization process. Due to the protonation/deprotonation of the intrinsic hydroxyl groups upon solution pH variation, the nanochannels array-based device is able to regulate ionic current rectification properties. The ion rectification ratio of the device is mainly determined by the branching size and surface charges, which is also confirmed by theoretical simulations. In addition, theoretical simulations show that the slight difference in ion rectification ratio for the nanochannel devices with different branching numbers is due to the propagation of concentration polarization. Three dimensional simulations clearly show the nonuniform concentration profiles in stem nanochannel near the junction interface due to the presence of branching nanochannels. The present ionic device is promising for biosensing, molecular transport and separation, and drug delivery in confined environments.

Abstract:Exceptional ion release and storage ability of biological ion channels are regarded as a prerequisite for various life activities. Constructing biomimetic nanochannels to modulate selective ion transport has received enormous attention. Herein, a study on ion transport behavior in a vertically-oriented three-sectional Ti3C2Tx membrane with asymmetric charge distribution was presented. The surface charge polarity of Ti3C2Tx nanosheet was changed from negativity to positivity by successfully grafting the silane molecules onto the surface. The heterogenous Ti3C2Tx nanochannel membrane consisting of three different charged sections was prepared to build up the nanofluidic device. The diode-like ion transport property was observed for the heterogenous membrane, and the maximum ion current rectification ratio reached approximately 32. The numerical simulation based on the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations indicated that the directional ion diffusion was attributed to the accumulation and depletion of ions in the nanochannels under different potential biases. Moreover, the application potential of desalination and ion storage of the heterogenous membrane was assessed. Our work paves the way for the design of heterogenous nanochannels for controllable ion transport and introduces a new perspective for ion sieving, energy conversion, and sensing applications.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a new design to enhance ion transport in pressure-driven nanofluidic systems for energy harvesting. The proposed system uses two counter-charged nanochannels, i.e., one of the channels is negatively charged while the other one is positively charged. Under a pressure gradient, cations and anions move through negatively and positively charged channels, respectively, in different directions and contribute to the streaming current. Molecular dynamics simulations are employed to study the effects of surface charge density, channel height, and pressure gradient on the streaming current. Compared with the traditional system, where the nanochannel is negatively charged, the streaming current in the proposed system can be enhanced by a factor up to 6.6. In addition to the involvement of both cations and anions, the enhanced current in the proposed system is caused by the strengthened ionic fluxes due to relatively low-energy barriers for ions entering the channels.

Abstract:Diverse nanoconfined ion transport behaviors have attracted increasing attention in constructing ion-channel-inspired nanoconfined systems for high nanofluidic energy conversion performance. Conventional nanofluidic systems cannot simultaneously obtain high ion-selectivity and high ion-flux in a large region due to the decreasing effect of the electrical double layer (EDL) formed on the charged surface. Here, space charge is introduced in the nanoconfined system to effectively solve this problem by employing the synergistic effect of surface and space charges. The charge effect contribution on controlled-ion-transport is further decoupled into surface charge, space charge and synergistic effects for the first time. The surface charge induces charge separation within the EDL in a smaller diameter channel while the space charge dominates the ion-selectivity by the ion-exchange mechanism in a larger diameter channel. The synergistic effect, contributed by EDL and ion-exchange effects, is extremely important in large (around 100 nm), short nanochannel (around 100 nm), and high concentration fold (around 1000-fold) conditions to achieve high ion-selectivity, ion-flux, and nanofluidic energy conversion performances, which is systematically analyzed by theoretical simulation results. These results reveal the mechanism for enhanced ion transport behaviors and provide a solid foundation for designing high-performance nanofluidic devices in fields of desalination, sensor, energy conversion and storage.

Abstract:Ion current rectification (ICR) in negatively charged conical nanopores is shown to be controlled by the electrolyte concentration gradient depending on the direction of ion diffusion. The degree of ICR is enhanced with the increasing forward concentration difference. An unusual rectification inversion is observed when the concentration gradient is reversely applied. A numerical simulation based on the coupled Poisson and Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations is proposed to solve the ion distribution and ionic flux in the charged and structurally asymmetric nanofluidic channel with diffusive ion flow. Simulation results qualitatively describe the diffusion-induced ICR behavior in conical nanopores suggested by the experimental data. The concentration-gradient-dependent ICR enhancement and inversion is attributed to the cooperation and competition between geometry-induced asymmetric ion transport and the diffusive ion flow. The present study improves our understanding of the ICR in asymmetric nanofluidic channels associated with the ion concentration difference and provides insight into the rectifying biological ion channels.

Abstract:A molecular dynamics (MD) model of the fluidic electrokinetic transport in a nano-scale channel with two bulk sinks was presented, and the process of ion transport in the nanochannel was simulated in this paper. The model consists of two water sinks at the two ends and a pump in the middle, which is different from a single pump model in previous MD simulations. Simulation results show that the charged surfaces of the nanochannel result in the depletion of co-ions and the enrichment of counterions in the nanochannel. A stable current is induced because of the motion of ions when an external electric field is applied across the nanochannel, and the current in the pump region is mainly induced by the motion of counterions. In addition, the ion number in the pump region rapidly decreases as the external electric field is applied. In the equilibrated system, the electrically neutral character in the pump region is destroyed and this region displays a certain electrical character, which depends on the surface charge. The ion distribution is greatly different from the results predicted by the continuum theory, e.g. a smaller peak value of Na + concentration appears near the wall. The transport efficiency of counterions (coions) can be effectively increased (decreased) by increasing the surface charge density. The simulation results demonstrate that the ion distribution in the electric double layer (EDL) of a nanochannel cannot be exactly described by the classical Gouy-Chapman-Stern (GCS) theory model. The mechanism of some special experimental phenomena in a nanochannel and the effect of the surface charge density on the ion-transport efficiency were also explored to provide some theoretical insights for the design and application of nano-scale fluidic pumps.
Modulation of ionic current rectification in short bipolar nanopores

Abstract:Bipolar nanopores, with asymmetric charge distributions, can induce significant ionic current rectification (ICR) at ultra-short lengths, finding potential applications in nanofluidic devices, energy conversion, and other related fields. Here, with simulations, we investigated the characteristics of ion transport and modulation of ICR inside bipolar nanopores. With bipolar nanopores of half-positive and half-negative surfaces, the most significant ICR phenomenon appears at various concentrations. In these cases, ICR ratios are independent of electrolyte types. In other cases where nanopores have oppositely charged surfaces in different lengths, ICR ratios are related to the mobility of anions and cations. The pore length and surface charge density can enhance ICR. As the pore length increases, ICR ratios first increase and then approach their saturation which is determined by the surface charge density. External surface charges of nanopores can promote the ICR phenomenon mainly due to the enhancement of ion enrichment inside nanopores by external surface conductance. The effective width of exterior charged surfaces under various conditions is also explored, which is inversely proportional to the pore length and salt concentration, and linearly related to the pore diameter, surface charge density, and applied voltage. Our results may provide guidance for the design of bipolar porous membranes.

Abstract:Recently, the experimentally observed asymmetric properties of ion transport in charged conical nanopores (CCNs) that resemble those in biological ion channels have attracted a lot of attention in theoretical studies in nanotechnology research. In this paper, we report several tactics to study this effect by directly solving the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations. The result shows that PNP equations can indeed quantitatively describe the properties of these nanopores. Based on our numerical solutions, we contribute the rectification effect to ion-enrichment and ion-depletion. A detailed study of length dependence of current indicates that a relatively long length is indispensable for the CCNs to have rectification effect. We suggest that PNP equations and the calculation method could be further used to study other shapes of nanopores.
