Abstract:Untethered soft miniature robots are considered to have a wide range of applications in biomedical field. However, researchers today still have not reached a consensus on its configuration design and actuation method. Here, inspired by the tentacles of a certain kind of echinodermata, we propose a soft multi-legged robot with a total weight of 0.26 g capable of multiple locomotion modes. Based on the magnetic field distribution of a square permanent magnet, we qualitatively analyze the motion mechanism of the robot. Finally, we carried out relevant experimental research. The research shows that the robot can move forward, backward, steering and cross obstacles under the control of the magnetic field, and can combine these abilities to navigate the maze.
A Novelty Crawling Robot With Hybrid Locomotion

Abstract:In this study, a new design approach for a multi terrain-abilities crawling robot is presented. With a slender body and four legs, the robot is able to perform both Serpentine and quadruped locomotion. To generate the locomotion, a central pattern generator (CPG) inspired controller is adopted. According to biology studies, CPGs are a set of neuronal circuits, which are responsible for producing rhythmic motion employed in animal locomotion. The main feature of proposed locomotion generation approach is the use of a set of coupled Hopf Oscillators to imitate of CPG in a nerve system. Moreover, to deal with dynamically changing environments, a feedback based fuzzy logic control strategy is investigated. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed robot system is verified through the experiments of a crawling robot prototype.

Abstract:In order to make the robot adapt to various complex working conditions and weather conditions, and expand its application scope and scenarios, a new type of wheel-track compound structure robot is proposed, which has multi-motion mode and can realize the free switching between wheeled movement and wheel-track movement. Sprocket chain is used to drive the rotary movement of both sides of wheels of the robot, and the combination of dynamic and static seals is adopted to achieve the protection level of the robot IP65. In this article.the robot's movement patterns are analyzed, the mechanical analysis of the most representative function of climbing stairs under the wheel-track movement mode is carried out, the traction and supporting force of the robot in each stage of climbing stairs is obtained, the theoretical basis for the stability discrimination of robot is provided when the robot is in contact with stairs, and the design of robot structure and control system driving device is optimized. The results show that the robot can climb stairs, surmount obstacles, climb slopes and walk upright, which proves the rationality of the structure design and the stability of the robot under various complex working conditions.

Abstract:In this research, we introduce a novel multimodal locomotion robot by integrating foldable wheeled structures with antagonistically deformable worm-like structures. This design reconciles the inherent challenges faced by conventional worm-like and wheeled robots. Our robot showcases two locomotion modes and five distinct motion types: worm-like rectilinear, sidewinding, circular crawling, rectilinear rolling, and spot turning. This versatility enables the robot to adapt to diverse environments and tasks. We have developed kinematic models for both crawling and rolling locomotion modes. By correlating these models with gait and control signals, we can qualitatively predict the characteristics of robot trajectories and locomotion performance indexes, underscoring the key role of kinematic models in locomotion. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate the robot's multiterrain adaptability. The robot adeptly navigates horizontal, curved, and vertical industrial pipes, along with narrow sewers, utilizing the worm-like crawling mode. Moreover, it efficiently traverses open terrains, including carpeted floors, mossy ground, gravel paths, grassland, steps, asphalt pavement, and uphill, employing the rolling mode. Impressively, the robot swiftly readjusts its posture after descending steps and promptly reorients itself through spot turns, showcasing its agility. This work highlights the advantages of combining multiple motion modalities and integrating structural and control signals, providing valuable insights for the advancement of future bionic and multimodal robots.

Abstract:In this paper, we made an improved design on the traditional quadruped robot structure and developed a new small wheel-legged mobile robot structure. It has four legged configurations, which can be selected according to different situations, improving the mobility and operability of the robot. In wheeled mode, the robot can adjust its center of gravity according to actual needs. Including the rotational degree of freedom of the wheel, each leg has four degrees of freedom. Each leg adopts a series structure and moves the knee drive motor to the fuselage position using a parallel four-link mechanism and is symmetrically arranged with the hip drive motor. A wheel is installed at the end of the shank, and a DC brushless motor is built inside it, enabling the robot to have the function of wheeled motion. This article introduces the details of the wheel-legged robot, emphasizing the innovative design of the physical structure and the diversity of deformation. The forward kinematics was analyzed. Based on the full-elbow configuration (a type of legged configuration), a cycloidal motion optimization simulation was completed for the single leg structure. Simulation experiment has proven that the optimized robot’s single leg motion is smoother. Finally, we conducted a typical experiment using an embedded controller to control single leg motion. The experimental results verify that the optimized cycloidal motion of the robot meets the desired motion effect.

Abstract:Omnidirectional mobile operating robot not only expands the working space of manipulator, but also enhances the function of the omnidirectional vehicle. So, it has wide application prospect. This paper analyses the omnidirectional movement principle of Mecanum wheel, designs an omnidirectional moving vehicle based on Mecanum wheel, and establishes its motion control rules. A manipulator with six degrees of freedom is designed and its kinematic model is established. Simulation platform of omnidirectional mobile operating robot is developed, and the motion trajectory to cover the maximum moment and speed of joints as much as possible is designed. Simulation results show that the movement of omnidirectional vehicle is steady and the vertical fluctuation is small. The predetermined trajectory of manipulator is achieved, the movement of joints is smooth, and the force and energy consumption of each joint are reasonable, which verifies the feasibility of the omnidirectional mobile operating robot.

Abstract:This paper describes the design and control concepts of a mammal-like hexapod walking robot. It has a hexapod configuration and is driven by 12 digital servomotors which are controlled by main processor located on the main body. The novel mechanical design with 12 degrees of freedom is introduced as well as the hardware architecture of the control system. In this study, the alternative tripod gait is generated and realized by inverse kinematics method in the single-leg physical model with the foot trajectories planned. Dynamic calculation and simulation results demonstrate the validity of the design concept. The experiments prove that the robot could achieve the straight-line walking with good performance.

Abstract:The increasingly complex application environment has raised higher demands on the performance of ground mobile robots in terms of environmental adaptability, autonomous avoidance, and self-rescue. In addition to multi-sensor fusion and control strategies, novel locomotion systems are crucial research directions. Here we propose a novel hybrid locomotion ground mobile robot, called arm-wheel-track robot (AWTR). It combines two locomotion systems, wheeled and tracked locomotion. Two multiple-degree-of-freedom arms are mounted on the front and rear of its chassis. The arms can assist the robot in transforming locomotion modes, surmounting obstacles, fall recovery, etc. Two ultrasonic sensors and a tilt sensor are mounted on it to perceive the environment and self-posture. One of the ultrasonic sensors mounted on the forearm can achieve a more comprehensive perception of the environment ahead with the extra workspace provided by the forearm. We establish the relationship of terrains with sensor data and forearm posture and develop different locomotion strategies for different terrains, so that the robot can classify different terrain and accomplish the corresponding locomotion strategies autonomously. We have built a prototype and conducted experiments on different terrains. The results verified the robot's movement performance, the effectiveness of the terrain perception method and the locomotion strategies for different terrains.

Abstract:An adaptive wheel-legged shape reconfigurable mobile robot, based on a scissor-like mechanism, is proposed for an obstacle detecting and surmounting robot, moving on complex terrain. The robot can dynamically adjust its own shape, according to the environment, realizing a transformation of wheel shape into leg shape and vice versa. Each wheel-legged mechanism has one degree of freedom, which means that only the relative motion of the inner and outer discs is needed to achieve the transformation of the shape into a wheel or a leg. First, the force analysis of the conversion process of the wheel-legged mechanism is carried out, while the relationship between the driving torque and the friction factor in the non-conversion trigger stage and in the conversion trigger stage is obtained. The results showed that the shape conversion can be better realized by increasing the friction factor of the trigger point. Next, the kinematics analysis of the robot, including climbing the obstacles, stairs and gully, is carried out. The motion of the spokes tip is obtained, in order to derive the folding ratio and the surmountable obstacle height of the wheel-legged mechanism. The parameters of the wheel-legged structure are optimized, to obtain better stability and obstacle climbing ability. Finally, a dynamic simulation model is established by ADAMS, to verify the obstacle climbing performance and gait rationality of the robot, in addition to a prototype experiment. The results showed that the surmountable obstacle height of the robot is about 3.05 times the spoke radius. The robot has the stability of a traditional wheel mechanism and the obstacle surmount performance of a leg mechanism, making it more suitable for field reconnaissance and exploration missions.

Abstract:The two-wheeled legged robot combines the advantages of legged robot and wheeled robot and has high terrain adaptability. Spherical robots are highly resistant to interference during detection. In this paper, a new sphere-wheel-legged robot is designed by combining these three motion modes. This paper begins by introducing the mechanical design, hardware, and software. Then, kinematics and dynamics of wheel-legged motion and spherical motion are analyzed in detail. Subsequently, the controllers for wheel-legged balancing motion, wheel-legged jumping motion, and sphere rolling motion are developed, respectively. Finally, experiments are carried out for different modes. The results demonstrate that the designed robot has excellent locomotor capabilities over different terrains.

Abstract:In complex real-world scenarios, wheel-legged robots with maneuverability, stability, and reliability have addressed growing research attention, especially in material transportation, emergency rescue, as well as the exploration of unknown environments. How to achieve stable high-level movement with payload delivery simultaneously is the main challenge for the wheel-legged robot. In this article, a novel hierarchical framework for the flexible motion of the six wheel-legged robot is considered in experimental results. First, for the wheeled motion, the speed consensus algorithm is implemented to the six-wheeled cooperative control; for the legged motion, three gait sequences, and foot-end trajectory based on the Bezier function are designed. Furthermore, a whole-body control architecture includes the attitude controller, impedance controller, and center height controller is developed for obstacle avoidance, which can ensure the horizontal stability of the body of the robot when it passes through obstacles in different terrain. Finally, extensive experimental demonstrations using the six wheel-legged robot (BIT-6NAZA) are dedicated to the effectiveness and robustness of the developed framework, indicating that it is a superior case of a selectable flexible motion with satisfactory stable performance under the field world environment.

Abstract:Compared with traditional mobile robots, the wheel-legged mobile robot has outstanding environmental adaptability and obstacle-crossing performance, which has gradually become a research hotspot. This paper proposes a six-wheel-legged mobile robot consisting of six legs and six wheels, six driving motors and six steering motors for omnidirectional movement, double rocker mechanism and double parallel suspension mechanism give the robot a good ability to overcome obstacles and load capacity. The basic structure concept of the robot and motor selection of the robot are introduced. Also, analysis of the mobile robot is focused on its climbing movement and steering locomotion process. Theoretical analysis shows that the robot can overcome a 30° slope or steps, as well as good plane steering maneuverability.

Abstract:Abstract In many rescue and detection tasks, mobile robots are required to transverse over uneven terrains and enter some dangerous environments that people cannot overcome, such as crevices, pipes, gullies, etc. High mobility/speed and adaptability to complex environment are two important performance indexes for mobile robots. Legged robots are with high environmental adaptability, while wheeled robots are with high mobility. Since existing mobile robots cannot meet these two requirements simultaneously, a flexible, extensible, and reconfigurable multi-terrain vehicle with a varying wheelbase is proposed innovatively. The vehicle body contains two main parts: one middle plate and two side plates, which both have two active wheels and are connected to the same shaft, which has two passive wheels on both sides. Specially, the included angle between one middle plate and two side plates is driven by an active motor, and then the vehicle can behave many forms by adjusting the wheelbase between two pair of active wheels. Under the body configuration, the multi-terrain vehicle can achieve the motions of crossing deep pit, climbing stair, crossing height limiting rod, climbing crevice, and crossing pipe by folding and varying the wheelbase. First, the detailed mechanical structure of multi-terrain vehicle is designed. Second, the kinematics of the multi-terrain vehicle including the inverse and forward solutions of wheelbase and centroid velocity are analyzed. Third, the control scheme combining travel speed controller, turn controller, and wheelbase controller is proposed based on proportional-Integral-derivative algorithm. Finally, many simulations and experiments validate both the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed structure and control of the multi-terrain vehicle.

Abstract:Spherical robots have many desirable traits when designing mass efficient systems interacted with unstructured terrain. In this letter, we propose a hybrid bionic spherical robot based on the morphological properties of sea urchins and the movement characteristics of tumbleweeds. This robot enables it to move freely in harsh terrain with the distributed high-aspect-ratio telescopic units, where our control strategy is based on a central pattern generator, and combines foot pressure measurements and actuator state information. In particular, these data from multiple foot pressure sensors also are used to compute the robots center of mass, with evaluating locomotion state during rolling maneuvers. The experimental results show the ability of our design to provide reliable pose estimates, also overcoming a challenge in the field of mobile robotics, including switch directions flexibly in harsh terrain due to their anisotropy.

Abstract:Abstract The wheel-legged hybrid structure has been utilized by ground mobile platforms in recent years to achieve good mobility on both flat surfaces and rough terrain. However, most of the wheel-legged robots only have one-directional obstacle-crossing ability. During the motion, most of the wheel-legged robots’ centroid fluctuates violently, which damages the stability of the load. What’s more, many designs of the obstacle-crossing part and transformation-driving part of this structure are highly coupled, which limits its optimal performance in both aspects. This paper presents a novel wheel-legged robot with a rim-shaped changeable wheel, which has a bi-directional and smooth obstacle-crossing ability. Based on the kinematic model, the geometric parameters of the wheel structure and the design variables of the driving four-bar mechanism are optimized separately. The kinetostatics model of the mobile platform when climbing stairs is established to determine the body length and angular velocity of the driving wheels. A prototype is made according to the optimal parameters. Experiments show that the prototype installed with the novel transformable wheels can overcome steps with a height of 1.52 times of its wheel radius with less fluctuation of its centroid and performs good locomotion capabilities in different environments.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to put forward a nvew reconfigurable multi-mode walking-rolling robot based on the single-loop closed-chain four-bar mechanism, and the robot can be changed to different modes according to the terrain. Design/methodology/approach Based on the topological analysis, singularity analysis, feasibility analysis, gait analysis and the motion strategy based on motor time-sharing control, the paper theoretically verified that the robot can switch between the four motion modes. Findings The robot integrates four-bar walking, self-deforming and four-bar and six-bar rolling modes. A series of simulation and prototype experiment results are presented to verify the feasibility of multiple motion modes of the robot. Originality/value The work presented in this paper provides a good theoretical basis for further exploration of multiple mode mobile robots. It is an attempt to design the multi-mode mobile robot based on single loop kinematotropic mechanisms. It is also a kind of exploration of the new unknown movement law.

Abstract:Multimodal locomotion capability is an emerging topic in robotics field, and various novel mobile robots have been developed to enable the maneuvering in both terrestrial and aerial domains. Among these hybrid robots, several state-of-the-art bipedal \robots enable the complex walking motion which is interlaced with flying. These robots are also desired to have the manipulation ability; however, it is difficult for the current forms to keep stability with the joint motion in midair due to the central\ized rotor arrangement. Therefore, in this work, we develop a novel air-ground amphibious quadruped robot called SPIDAR which is assisted by spherically vectorable rotors distributed in each link to enable both walking motion and transformable flight. F\irst, we present a unique mechanical design for quadruped robot that enables terrestrial and aerial locomotion. We then reveal the modeling method for this hybrid robot platform, and further develop an integrated control strategy for both walking and fl\ying with joint motion. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed hybrid quadruped robot by performing a seamless motion that involves static walking and subsequent flight. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to achieve a \quadruped robot with multimodal locomotion capability, which also shows the potential of manipulation in multiple domains.

Abstract:In recent years many researchers are trying to combine wheeled movement with legged movement or hopping movement to strengthen the robots adaptability to environment. Hybrid robots are playing a more and more important role in our modern life. However, their controls are mostly complicated. So in this paper we present a new solution for the wheeled hopping robot. Based on the mechanical design, this robot has two movement modes: wheeled and hopping movement mode. While the center of gravity of the mechanism is under the wheels center, the wheeled hopping robot which is like a tumbler can keep its stability even when the wheels' velocity is zero. In this paper, we firstly introduce the description and design of the wheeled hopping robot. Then we explain how to choose the robot parameters and lastly we describe, how the robot through hopping, successfully traverses obstacles and ditches.

Abstract:In order to accomplish exploration missions in complex environments, a new type of robot has been designed. By analyzing the characteristics of typical moving systems, a new mobile system which is named wheel-tracked moving system (WTMS) has been presented. Then by virtual prototype simulation, the new system's ability to adapt complex environments has been verified. As the curve of centroid acceleration changes in large amplitude in this simulation, ride performance of this robot has been studied. Firstly, a simplified dynamic model has been established, and then by affecting factors analysis on ride performance, an optimization model for suspension parameters has been presented. Using NSGA-II method, a set of nondominated solutions for suspension parameters has been gotten, and by weighing the importance of the objective function, an optimal solution has been selected to be applied on suspension design. As the wheel-tracked exploration robot has been designed and manufactured, the property test has been conducted. By testing on physical prototype, the robot's ability to surmount complex terrain has been verified. Design of the wheel-tracked robot will provide a stable platform for field exploration tasks, and in addition, the certain configuration and suspension parameters optimization method will provide reference to other robot designs.

Abstract:Wheeled mobile robots have been receiving continuous attention in various fields because of their stability, efficiency, and simple mechanisms. However, most of them require significantly larger occupied space than humans and have limited maneuverability in the environment for humans, such as crowded corridors, floor thresholds, ramps, and elevators. This letter presents a new wheel-leg mobile robot that combines the legs for changeable support polygon and mecanum wheels for holonomic motion. The robot has a human-like slim shape with 4 wheel-leg mechanisms, each of which has one 2-DOF leg frame and one mecanum wheel. To allow 2-DOF leg motion while maintaining the orientation of the mecanum wheels, a unique parallel link mechanism was devised. In order to achieve agile motion and impact and vibration absorption capability, a back-drivable high payload compound planetary gear was developed. The ground reaction force (GRF) compensation mechanism in each leg reduces the required payload of the actuators. The letter describes the detailed mechanical design of the robot and the actuators. The effectiveness of the proposed robot was verified in various experiments, fast omnidirectional motion test, a climbing test of a single step, and a motion test in the elevator with people.
