Abstract:Constructing novel surface microstructures for photocatalytic materials could significantly enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate from water splitting. In this work, novel 2D/3D structured CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 p-n heterojunction photocatalysts for water splitting were successfully prepared by a solvothermal method. The coupling of a 2D CuCo2S4 nanoplate on the surface of 3D flower-like CdIn2S4 microspheres has strengthened the visible light absorption and promoted the charge separation efficiency due to their tight contacting area. The obtained CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 (CSCIS-2) photocatalyst exhibited a hydrogen production rate of 1320 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which was fivefold of that for pure CdIn2S4. Additionally, cyclic tests demonstrated improved photoactivity stability of the samples. A series of photoelectrochemical characterizations confirmed the effective suppression of charge carrier recombination in CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 composite catalysts. Finally, a rational photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the semiconductor band theory. This work contributes to the enrichment of sulfide-based research and applications in photocatalysis.

Abstract:High-quality interfacial coupling can effectively boost photogenerated charge separation/transfer efficiency. Herein, we develop a multicomponent photocatalyst, Co6Mo6C2-MoO2-CoNC@ZnIn2S4 (CMN@Z), featuring directional and swift carrier transfer ability through interfacial microenvironment modulation. The distinctive CMN@Z displays a ten-times enhanced photocatalytic H2-production performance of 4728 μmol·g−1·h−1 than pure ZIS, accompanied by optimized apparent quantum efficiency of 25.06 % at 420 nm. Typically, the well-tuned Schottky barrier readily balances its bifunctionality in rectifying effect and powerful photogenerated electron extraction impetus. Moreover, the gradient work function variation enables the interfacial potential as a robust driving force to expedite charge transfer. Therefore, the resulting cascade charge channel and intimate interfacial contact endow CMN@Z photocatalyst with optimized H2-production performance by virtue of high-efficiency carrier spatial separation and utilization. Our work deeply explores the role of multiple interfacial in coupling photocatalytic systems, which offers new insight into the rational design of cascade photocatalysts.

Constructing Direct Z‐Scheme Heterostructure by Enwrapping ZnIn2S4 on CdS Hollow Cube for Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Generation

Abstract:The stable composite photocatalyst integrated by ultrathin ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on surface of hollow CdS exhibits outstanding visible‐light‐driven photocatalytic H2 generation activity, due to that: i) the Z‐scheme charge transfer route facilitates charge separation, prolongs carrier lifetimes, and remains strong electron reduction capacity; ii) the unique cube‐in‐cube structure brings abundant active sites, improves light harvesting ability, shortens charge transfer distance. Rational design hybrid nanostructure photocatalysts with efficient charge separation and transfer, and good solar light harvesting ability have critical significance for achieving high solar‐to‐chemical conversion efficiency. Here a highly active and stable composite photocatalyst is reported by integrating ultrathin ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on surface of hollow CdS cube to form the cube‐in‐cube structure. Experimental results combined with density functional theory calculations confirm that the Z‐scheme ZnIn2S4/CdS heterojunction is formed, which highly boosts the charge separation and transfer under the local‐electric‐field at semiconductor/semiconductor interface, and thus prolongs their lifetimes. Moreover, such a structure affords the highly enhanced light‐harvesting property. The optimized ZnIn2S4/CdS nanohybrids exhibit superior H2 generation rate under visible‐light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) with excellent photochemical stability during 20 h continuous operation.

Constructing CoPC/g-C3N4 nanocomposites with PC bond bridged interface and van der Waals heterojunctions for enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution

Abstract:Enhancing the charge transmission rate at the interface of transition metal phosphide cocatalysts is an efficient technique to reinforce the photocatalytic activity action of semiconductors, but achieving a faster interface charge transfer rate remains a challenge. This paper reported the coupling of a two-dimensional carbon layer supported CoP (CoPC) as a non-noble metal heterostructure catalyst and a two-dimensional porous graphite carbon nitride (CN) photocatalyst to enhance the transmission rate of photogenerated carriers at the interface. Detailed characterizations and mechanism research have confirmed that the PC bond and Van der Waals heterojunction at the interface function as a novel charge transmission channel, which facilitates the effective transfer of photogenerated carriers from CN to CoP. Furthermore, the large contact area exhibited by the 2D/2D Van der Waals heterojunction offers an increased number of active sites for hydrogen evolution reactions. Consequently, the composite material (CoPC/CN) formed by the coupling of CoPC and CN has an enhanced H2 production rate of 1503 μmol∙g-1∙h-1 (AQY: 3.03 % at 400 nm) and favorable H2 production stability under visible light irradiation. This investigation not only provides a new idea for the regulation of interface charge transfer pathway but also offers new inspiration for the photocatalytic system's design with the synergistic impacts of 2D/2D VDW heterojunction and chemical bonds.

Abstract:Abstract Construction of Z-scheme heterostructure is of great significance for realizing efficient photocatalytic water splitting. However, the conscious modulation of Z-scheme charge transfer is still a great challenge. Herein, interfacial Mo-S bond and internal electric field modulated Z-scheme heterostructure composed by sulfur vacancies-rich ZnIn 2 S 4 and MoSe 2 was rationally fabricated for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Systematic investigations reveal that Mo-S bond and internal electric field induce the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism as confirmed by the surface photovoltage spectra, DMPO spin-trapping electron paramagnetic resonance spectra and density functional theory calculations. Under the intense synergy among the Mo-S bond, internal electric field and S-vacancies, the optimized photocatalyst exhibits high hydrogen evolution rate of 63.21 mmol∙g −1 ·h −1 with an apparent quantum yield of 76.48% at 420 nm monochromatic light, which is about 18.8-fold of the pristine ZIS. This work affords a useful inspiration on consciously modulating Z-scheme charge transfer by atomic-level interface control and internal electric field to signally promote the photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Constructing heterojunctions with transition metal sulfides is an excellent strategy to reduce the dependency on noble metals in photocatalytic water splitting. Herein, 0D CoMoS4 nanoparticles were first deposited in-situ on the surface of 3D ZnIn2S4 microflowers for constructing heterostructured CoMoS4-ZnIn2S4 (CMS-ZIS) compos-ites. The CMS-ZIS composites showed strengthened absorption capabilities in the visible light region compared with pure ZnIn2S4. The electron microscopy scanning images indicate that countless CoMoS4 particles were loaded into the gaps on the surface of ZnIn2S4 microflowers, resulting in a close interface contact between the materials. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) rate of the optimized CMS-ZIS-3 product is 6.43 folds that of pure ZnIn2S4, which is approximately 3942.1 mu mol g(-1) h(-1). The enhanced activity should be attributed to the promoted carrier transfer rate and reduced recombination efficiency. We inferred the possible mechanism for photocatalytic hydrogen production over CMS-ZIS-3 based on the band potential and photoelectrochemical testing results. This study provides a feasible strategy for designing efficient and cost-effective 0D/3D heterostructures.
Insight into the Synergistic Effect of Defect and Strong Interface Coupling on ZnIn2S4/CoIn2S4 Heterostructure for Boosting Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Abstract:Steering the directional carrier migration across the interface is a central mission for efficient photocatalytic reactions. In this work, an atomic-shared heterointerface is constructed between the defect-rich ZnIn2S4 (HVs-ZIS) and CoIn2S4 (CIS) via a defect-guided heteroepitaxial growth strategy. The strong interface coupling induces adequate carriers exchanging passageway between HVs-ZIS and CIS, enhancing the internal electric field (IEF) in the ZnIn2S4/CoIn2S4 (HVs-ZIS/CIS) heterostructure. The defect structure in HVs-ZIS induces an additional defect level, improving the separation efficiency of photocarriers. Moreover, promoted by the IEF and intimate heterointerface, photogenerated electrons trapped by the defect level can migrate to the valence band of CIS, contributing to massive photogenerated electrons with intense reducibility in HVs-ZIS/CIS. Consequently, the HVs-ZIS/CIS heterostructure performs a boosted H2 evolution activity of 33.65 mmol g-1 h-1. This work highlights the synergistic effects of defect and strong interface coupling in regulating carrier transfer and paves a brave avenue for constructing efficient heterostructure photocatalysts. Construction of Z-scheme heterojunction interfacial charge transfer pathways in ZnIn2S4@NENU-5 for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Utilizing the designed heterojunction structures between photocatalysts to enhance photoelectrochemical performance represents an effective strategy for improving the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production. In this work, a straightforward one-step solvothermal method was employed to embed NENU-5 nano-octahedrons within ZnIn2S4 nanoflowers, forming ZnIn2S4@NENU-5 heterostructures. Hydrogen production tests conducted over 5 h revealed a hydrogen evolution activity of 5282.14 μmol g-1 h-1 in triethanolamine (TEOA) solution at pH=9, which is 4.9 times and 264 times higher than that of pure ZnIn2S4 and NENU-5, respectively. The significant enhancement in photocatalytic performance indicates that the constructed Z-scheme heterojunction increases the active sites on the catalyst surface and plays a crucial role in photocarrier transfer. Furthermore, the Z-scheme heterojunction is confirmed through Mott-Schottky (M-S), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), and valence band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (VB-XPS). The effective charge transfer at the ZnIn2S4@NENU-5 heterojunction interface is validated based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In summary, this work offers an effective approach to designing novel heterojunction photocatalysts by combining MOF materials with bimetallic sulfides, thereby promoting the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Promoting Charge Separation in Hollow-Structured C/MoS2@ZnIn2S4/Co3O4 Photocatalysts via Double Heterojunctions for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:A reasonable design of samples with efficient spatial separation for photoinduced electron-hole pairs toward the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has gained significant attention. Herein, a new C/MoS2@ZnIn2S4/Co3O4 composite with a core-shell structure is designed toward photocatalytic hydrogen production on C/MoS2 and Co3O4 dual electron collectors. Co3O4 nanoparticles as the co-catalyst would form a Schottky junction with ZnIn2S4 nanosheets while the C/MoS2 hollow core would form the step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction with ZnIn2S4 sheets, which provides a dual photogenerated electron transfer pathway during the light irradiation process. In addition, the unique core-shell architecture offers large contact interfaces favoring the exposure of rich active sites, which facilitated the separation and the transfer of charges. Consequently, all these factors endowed the C/MoS2@ZnIn2S4/Co3O4 composite with enhanced light absorption ability and an increased hydrogen evolution rate of 6.7 mmol·g-1·h-1 under 420 nm light irradiation, which is about 23.4- and 4.5-fold that of ZnIn2S4 and CMZ, respectively. This work offers a guideline for designing efficient composite photocatalysts toward the photocatalytic HER.
Construction of Hollow Co3O4@ZnIn2S4 p-n Heterojunctions for Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Abstract:Photocatalysts derived from semiconductor heterojunctions for water splitting have bright prospects in solar energy conversion. Here, a Co3O4@ZIS p-n heterojunction was successfully created by developing two-dimensional ZnIn2S4 on ZIF-67-derived hollow Co3O4 nanocages, realizing efficient spatial separation of the electron-hole pair. Moreover, the black hollow structure of Co3O4 considerably increases the range of light absorption and the light utilization efficiency of the heterojunction avoids the agglomeration of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets and further improves the hydrogen generation rate of the material. The obtained Co3O4(20) @ZIS showed excellent photocatalytic H2 activity of 5.38 mmol g−1·h−1 under simulated solar light, which was seven times more than that of pure ZnIn2S4. Therefore, these kinds of constructions of hollow p-n heterojunctions have a positive prospect in solar energy conversion fields.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) is used to convert solar energy to hydrogen energy. Therefore, a low-cost, effective, and dependable photocatalyst could be a viable solution to environmental and energy crises. However, performing energy-conversion reactions by preparing photocatalysts with suitable photoabsorption and effective charge separation is challenging. Herein, a novel CoMn2O4-ZnIn2S4 (CMO-ZIS) hollow microcube composite catalyst with a p-n heterojunction is constructed, in which ZnIn2S4 nanosheets are grown in situ on the surfaces of CoMn2O4 hollow microcubes. Surprisingly, 10% CoMn2O4-ZnIn2S4 (CMO-ZIS-10) exhibits a PHE rate of up to 11.04 mmol h−1 g−1, which is approximately 3.6 times higher than that of pure ZnIn2S4. In addition, to maintain the excellent visible light absorption efficiency of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets, the close-contact heterogeneous interface of CMO-ZIS enables easy separation and transfer of the carriers. Furthermore, the hollow structure increases the absorption efficiency of sunlight and provides more active sites, thus increasing the reactivity of photocatalyst. In this paper, we report a workable approach for building heterojunction photocatalysts powered by water splitting.

Abstract:Designing an efficient heterojunction interface is an effective way to promote the electrons' transfer and improve the photocatalytic H 2 evolution performance. In this work, a novel hollow hybrid system of /CdS has been fabricated and constructed. CdS nanospheres are anchored on the hollow-structured cobalt incorporated nitrogen-doped carbon () through a one-pot in-situ chemical deposition approach, forming an intimate interface and establishing an excellent channel to improve the electrons transfer and charge carriers separation between CdS and cocatalyst, which immensely promotes the photocatalytic activity. The rate of photocatalytic H 2 evolution over hollow structured /CdS heterojunction can be achieved 8.2 mmol g −1 h −1 , which is about 45 times of pristine CdS nanospheres. The photocatalytic H 2 evolution mechanism has been investigated by the techniques of photoluminescence (PL) spectra, photocurrent-time (i-t) curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) etc. This work aims to provide a new way in developing of high-performance advanced 3D heterojunction for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:The difficulty in fabricating a multifaceted composite heterojunction system based on Cd x Zn1- x S limits the enhancement of photocatalytic performance. In the present scrutiny, novel ZnO/Cd x Zn1- x S/CdS composite heterojunctions are successfully prepared by the alkaline dissolution etching method. The internal electric field at the interface of I-type and Z-scheme heterojunction improved the effective charge separation. The ZC 8 sample exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance and the H2 production efficiency is 15.67 mmol g−1 h−1 with good stability up to 82.9 % in 24-hour cycles. The performance of CH4 and CO capacity in the CO2RR process is 3.47 μmol g−1 h−1 and 23.5 μmol g−1 h−1, respectively. The photogenerated accelerated charge transport is then examined in detail by in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ISXPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work presents a new idea for the synthesis of Cd x Zn1- x S solid-solution-based materials and provides a solid reference for the detailed mechanism regarding the electric field at the heterojunction interface.
Fabrication of novel Mn0.43Cd0.57S/ZnCo2O4 p-n heterojunction photocatalyst with efficient charge separation for highly enhanced visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution

Abstract:The construction of efficient and low-cost photocatalytic systems is a major challenge in the field of photocatalysis. An efficient heterojunction photocatalyst designed for water splitting is also an interesting prospect in energy conversion. In this study, a novel Mn0.43Cd0.57S/ZnCo2O4 p-n heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared via a simple solvothermal method. Mn0.43Cd0.57S was loaded on the surface the of noble metal-free transition metal oxide ZnCo2O4 to prevent the agglomeration of particles, resulting in efficiently improving the photocatalytic performance of the material. Due to the Fermi level balance, the band bending of the two materials constructs a p-n heterojunction, which stimulates the transfer of photogenerated electrons from the CB of Mn0.43Cd0.57S to the CB of ZnCo2O4. The uniformly dispersed p-n heterojunction structure effectively suppresses the recombination of photoinduced charges and preserves stronger redox charges. As a result, the established Mn0.43Cd0.57S/ZnCo2O4 heterojunction showed the best photocatalytic hydrogen production concentration (92.1 mmol g−1 h−1), which was 4.7 times that of the original Mn0.43Cd0.57S (19.4 mmol g−1 h−1) and 54.2 times that of ZnCo2O4 (1.7 mmol g−1 h−1). This strategy will provide new insights into the development of new photocatalysts.

Abstract:Enhancing the interfacial charge carriers transfer efficiency is important for designing photocatalysts with excellent hydrogen evolution performance. In this work, we have successfully constructed a In2O3@InN/ZnIn2S4 ternary heterostructure by embedding InN at the interface of thin-layered ZnIn2S4 and tubular In2O3 derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) nanorods for the first time. The InN can not only adjust the energy band structure of In2O3, but also boost the photogenerated charge carriers transfer at the interface of In2O3 and ZnIn2S4. The optimum photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of In2O3@InN/ZnIn2S4 composite reaches 275 µmol/h (50 mg of catalyst) under simulated sunlight irradiation, which is obviously higher than pure In2O3 (12.5 times), ZnIn2S4 (2.5 times) and binary In2O3/ZnIn2S4 (1.8 times) photocatalysts. This work can offer a meaningful strategy to promote the interfacial charge separation in the heterostructure for excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity.

Abstract:A Z-scheme photocatalytic water-splitting system is an effective approach to integrate the advantages both hydrogen- and oxygen-evolution photocatalysts. The interfacial properties of the heterojunctions have a great influence on the efficiency through the crystal orientation and the charge kinetics. In this study, a general chemical vapor deposition process and a gentle cation-exchange method were combined to assemble Z-scheme photocatalysts between CdS and MnS. As a result of the well-defined heterojunction interfaces and distinctive structural benefits, without cocatalysts, the 1 D CdS/MnS hybrid photocatalyst exhibited a significantly increased photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 1595 μmol h-1 g-1 (apparent quantum efficiency of 22.6 % at λ=420 nm), which is over 10.5 times higher than that of CdS. Moreover, a better photocatalytic stability is demonstrated over particulate (42 h cycling measurement) and photoelectrochemical (3000 min continuous measurement) systems. Overall, this work provides a unique experimental insight into high-quality heterojunction interface design and new Z-scheme photocatalyst synthesis.
Rational design of ZnCdS/TpPa-1-COF heterostructure photocatalyst by strengthening the interface connection in solar hydrogen production reactions

Abstract:ZnCdS quantum dots (QDs) are highly coveted in photocatalysis research for their exceptional visible-light responses and high light-absorption coefficients. However, their practical application is hindered by their tendency to aggregate, due to having high surface energies. To address this issue, herein, a heterostructure is synthesized by growing ZnCdS QDs with a size of approximately 5 nm onto the surface of a two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic framework (COF), TpPa-1-COF. This approach suppresses the aggregation of the QDs and improves their stability. The ZnCdS/TpPa-1-COF composite exhibited a peak hydrogen evolution rate of 6244.16 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which was 2.89 and 4.18 times greater than that of ZnCdS and TpPa-1-COF, respectively. The zero-dimensional/two-dimensional (0D/2D) heterojunction formed by ZnCdS and TpPa-1-COF generates a strong interfacial force, which is attributed to the intimate contact between the interfaces. Tight connections accelerate charge separation, improve the utilisation of reduced electrons, and reduce the extent of agglomeration of the ZnCdS QDs, thereby resulting in high hydrogen production activity of the composites. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic mechanism is studied using Kelvin probe force microscopy and theoretical calculations. This study offers a novel approach for creating sulfide photocatalysts and is crucial for investigating the potential practical applications of the related photocatalysts.

Abstract:Constructing heterojunctions with transition metal sulfides is an excellent strategy to reduce the dependency on noble metals in photocatalytic water splitting. Herein, 0D CoMoS 4 nanoparticles were first deposited in-situ on the surface of 3D ZnIn 2 S 4 microflowers for constructing heterostructured CoMoS 4 –ZnIn 2 S 4 (CMS-ZIS) composites. The CMS-ZIS composites showed strengthened absorption capabilities in the visible light region compared with pure ZnIn 2 S 4 . The electron microscopy scanning images indicate that countless CoMoS 4 particles were loaded into the gaps on the surface of ZnIn 2 S 4 microflowers, resulting in a close interface contact between the materials. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) rate of the optimized CMS-ZIS-3 product is 6.43 folds that of pure ZnIn 2 S 4 , which is approximately 3942.1 μmol g −1 h −1 . The enhanced activity should be attributed to the promoted carrier transfer rate and reduced recombination efficiency. We inferred the possible mechanism for photocatalytic hydrogen production over CMS-ZIS-3 based on the band potential and photoelectrochemical testing results. This study provides a feasible strategy for designing efficient and cost-effective 0D/3D heterostructures.

Bridging Effect of S–C Bond for Boosting Electron Transfer over Cubic Hollow CoS/g-C 3 N 4 Heterojunction toward Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Abstract:The construction of interfacial effects and chemical bonds between catalysts is one of the effective strategies to facilitate photogenerated electron transfer. A novel hollow cubic CoS is derived from Co-ZIF-9 and the S-C bond is successfully constructed between CoS and g-C3N4. The S-C bond acts as a bridge for electronic transmission, allowing the rapid transmission of photoelectron to hydrogen evolution active site in CoS. In addition, the results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy show that the S-C bond acts as a bridge to quickly transfer photogenerated carriers in the composite material, and achieves the effect of high-efficiency hydrogen evolution. The hydrogen production of SgZ-45 reaches 9545 μmol·g-1 in 5 h, which is 53 and 12 times that of g-C3N4 and ZIF-9, respectively. The intrinsic mechanism of photoelectron transfer through S-C bonds can be further confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work provides new insights for building a chemical bond electron transfer bridge between MOF derivatives and nonmetallic photocatalytic materials.

Abstract:In the face of energy scarcity and environmental degradation, photocatalysis emerges as a green and highly efficient method to convert solar energy into a renewable energy source. In this study, CdS nanoparticles were successfully grown in situ along the edges of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets using ultrasound during the synthesis process and the second phase precipitation of In(OH)3 appeared in the process of preparation. Optimal Cd and S ratios resulted in ZnIn2S4@In(OH)3@CdS heterojunction exhibiting remarkable photocatalytic H2 production performance compared to standalone ZnIn2S4 and CdS. The internal heterojunction interface within the composite naturally generates an electric field, enhancing carrier separation and facilitating their transport. Additionally, the inclusion of In(OH)3 further expedites carrier extraction. Ultimately, the mechanism behind the photocatalytic H2 production was elucidated using the Z-scheme mechanism. This work introduced a novel approach to fabricating multifunctional photocatalysts, presenting a fresh perspective in their design and preparation.
