Abstract:The photolysis of ZJ0273 in the methanol,acetone and xylene was studied under ultraviolet light(254 nm) at room temperature.Results showed that the primary degradation of ZJ0273 follows a pseudo-first-order kinetics in all solvents,and the degradation rate constants of ZJ0273 in methanol,acetone and xylene were 1.72×10-2,1.75×10-2 and 4.8×10-3 min-1,respectively.The rate of degradation followed the order of acetone > methanol > xylene,with the corresponding half-lives of 40.29,39.60 and 144.38 min,respectively.The degradation products were identified by LC/MS,and the results demonstrate that the photolytic pathway of ZJ0273 are concerned with the carbamylation of benzylademine,the cleavage of pyrimidine oxygen bond and benzyladenine bond as well as the photo-induced isomerization of the molecule itself.

Abstract:The environmental behaviour of neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) is of momentous concern due to their frequent detection in aquatic environment and their biotoxicity for non-target organisms. Phototransformation is one of the most significant transformation processes, which is directly related to NNIs exposure and environmental risks. In this study, the photodegradation of dinotefuran (DIN, 1-Methyl-2-nitro-3-(tetrahydro-3-furanylmethyl)-guanidine), one of the most promising NNIs, was conducted under irritated light in the presence of Cl − , DOM along with the effect of pH and initial concentration. The findings demonstrated that in ultra-pure (UP) water, the photolysis rate constants ( k ) of DIN rose with increasing initial concentration. Whereas, in tap water, at varied pH levels, and in the presence of Cl-, the outcomes were reversed. At the same time, lower concentration of DOM promoted DIN photolysis processes due to the production of reactive oxygen species, while higher concentrations of DOM inhibited the photolysis by the predominance of light shielding effects. The singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was produced in the photolysis processes of DIN with Cl − and DOM, which was confirmed by electron spin resonance (EPR) analysis. Four main photolysis products and three intermediates were identified by UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap MS analysis. The possible photodegradation pathways of DIN were proposed including the oxidation by 1 O 2 , reduction and hydrolysis after the removal of nitro group from parent compounds. This study expanding our understanding of transformation behavior and fate of NNIs in the aquatic environment, which is essential for estimating their environmental risks.

Abstract:The direct photolysis of 18 individual polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) substituted with 1–7 bromine atoms was investigated in hexane and methanol under UV irradiation. Based on the determined photolysis rate constants (kp) and calculated quantum yields (Φ), four quantitative structure–property relationship (QSPR) models were developed by partial least squares (PLS) method and 20 fundamental molecular structural descriptors. The fitting results showed that all of four QSPR models had good predictability and correlations between observed and predicted photolysis data were significant. The predominant molecular descriptors governing photolysis rate constants of PBDEs in hexane were Mw,Sm,qBr,andqBr+, while in methanol the significant variables were α, TE, Mw and Sm. In terms of the QSPR models for quantum yields of PBDEs in hexane and methanol, the governing molecular descriptors were almost the same. Molecular weight (Mw) and three atomic charge descriptors (qBr+,qH+,qBr) were all presented in the four QSPR models, implying that photolysis rate constants and quantum yields were affected by the bromination degree and substitution pattern of PBDE molecules.

Abstract:Pesticide biotransformation, especially by cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYPs), may produce metabolites with substantially altered toxicological and physicochemical profiles, which has drawn great attention as a basis for environmental risk assessment. CYPs are active in the metabolism of various reactions of pesticides, and there are potentially different short-lived oxidant species in CYPs (Compound I vs Compound 0), which make elucidating their biotransformation mechanism challenging. To facilitate this task, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to explore the puzzling bifurcation pathways of dieldrin by CYPs. The results show that the two-oxidant mechanism does not work, while the bifurcation pathways are within the mechanistic framework of a two-state reactivity of Compound I. Specifically, 9-hydroxy-dieldrin as a hydroxylation product is formed via H-abstraction and essentially barrierless C-9 alkyl radical rebound in the doublet state; while 3-ketone-dieldrin as a dechlorination product is formed via H-abstraction, C-9 alkyl radical cyclization, and C-3 cyclized radical rebound in the quartet state followed by HCl elimination, originating from a significant barrier for C-9 alkyl radical rebound in the quartet state to provide this radical sufficient lifetime for cyclization. Thus, the ratio [dechlorination]/[hydroxylation] can be estimated as 1:35, consistent with the experimental findings. We envision that application of computational chemistry has a great potential in revealing the complex biotransformation mechanisms of pesticides.
Effects of Some Chemical Fertilizers and Insecticides on Photodegradation of Novel Insecticide Sulfoxime in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:This paper is intended to present the authors' study results over the effect of some chemical fertilizers and insecticides on the photodegradation of novel insecticide sulfoxime (code:HNPCA9908) [O-(3-phenoxybenzyl)-2-methylthio-1-(4-chlorophenyl)propyl ketone oxime] in aqueous solution under the irradiation of ultraviolet light (λ=254 nm) in the laboratory.The experimental results of ours have shown that the photodegradation rate of sulfoxime tends to vary when the insecticide sulfoxime is combined with the chemical substances such as KNO_3,Ca (H_2PO)3)_2,urea,dimethoate,carbaryl and chlofenapyr at 1:1 ratio,respectively.KNO_3 proves to contribute to enhancing the photodegradation rate of sulfoximc,thus indicating it may have a significant photosensitization.On the other hand,Ca (H_2PO_3)_2 tends to reduce the photodegradation rate of sulfoxime,which means an obvious photoextinction effect.Our experiments also reveal that effect of urea on photolysis of sulfoxime varies with the illumination time,showing a weak photoextinction at the illumination time 10 min,a photosensitization from 20-40 min illumination time and a photoextinction after 60 min illumination time.Carbaryl and chlofenapyr may delay the photodcgradation of sulfoxime in aqueous solution,which manifests an obvious photoextinction effect.However,the influence of dimethoate on photolysis of sulfoxime proves to rely on the illuminating time,too,which means a weak photosensitization at first,and then a weak photoextinction when the illuminating time prolongs to 120 min.The half-lives of the sulfoxime photolysis in the solutions containing KNO_3,Ca(H_2PO_3)_2,urea,dimethoate,carbaryl and chlofenapyr prove to be 10.65 min,29.63 min,22.01 min,13.4 min,28.44 min and 41.61 min,respectively.And particularly speaking,it would be 22.3 min in the pure water without either pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Abstract:Acetamiprid is a novel nicotinic pesticide widely used in modern agriculture because of its low toxicity and specific biological target properties. The objective of this study was to understand the photolysis pattern of acetamiprid in the water column and elucidate its degradation products and mechanism. It was observed that acetamiprid exhibited different photolysis rates under different light source conditions in pure water, with ultraviolet > fluorescence > sunlight; furthermore, its photolysis half-life ranged from 17.3 to 28.6 h. In addition, alkaline conditions (pH 9.0) accelerated its photolysis rate, which increased with pH. Using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, five direct photolysis products generated during the exposure of acetamiprid to pure water were successfully separated and identified. The molecular structure of acetamiprid was further analyzed using density functional theory, and the active photodegradation sites of acetamiprid were predicted. The mechanism of the photolytic transformation of acetamiprid in water was mainly related to hydroxyl substitution and oxidation. Based on these findings, a comprehensive transformation pathway for acetamiprid was proposed.

Abstract:Photochemical methods attracted much research interests for their high-efficiency and low secondary pollution. Decomposition of synthetic pyrethroids, the fourth major group of insecticides in use worldwide, was also of great significance due to their possible environmental risks. The photodegradation of deltamethrin, permethrin and dihaloacetylated heterocyclic pyrethroids in methanol/acetone = 9/1 (by volume) by a 400 W mercury lamp was examined. The t1/2 of tested pyrethroids was less than 25 min, except for cis-permethrin with a t1/2 of up to 50 min. The trans-isomer of permethrin and compound DCA-01 with a smaller t1/2 might be more susceptible to degradation than their cis-isomer. Besides, the photodegradation of pyrethroids was divided into twelve pathways including isomerization, ester hydrolysis, ester bond cleavage, CO bond cleavage, 3,3-dimethylacrylate formation, double bond break, C1-C3 bond cleavage in cyclopropyl, reductive dehalogenation, decarboxylation, nucleophilic reagents attack on lone pair electrons on oxygen atoms in the phenyl ether, cyano hydrolysis, and halogenated hydrocarbon hydrolysis. The ECOSAR program displayed that pyrethroids and most of their photodegradation products were toxic to fish, daphnid, green algae. Particularly, some photodegradation products were more harmful to aquatic organisms than their parents.

Abstract:The direct and sensitized photodegradations of imidacloprid, 1-(6-chloro-3-pyridinylmethyl)-N-nitro-2-imidazolidinimine. were investigated in aqueous solution and with and without various photo-sensitizers. Results of the study revealed that the intensity of lamp-house and irradiation wavelength had significant effects on the photolysis of imidacloprid. Complete degradation of 20 mg/L imidacloprid in aqueous phase was observed in 40 min under ultraviolet(UV) irradiation system, suggesting the ultraviolet ray played significant role in direct photolysis of imidacloprid. The additions of various photo-sensitizers lead to improve the degradation efficiency of imidacloprid under the irradiation of black light fluorescent lamp. TiO2 was the most efficient in the photo-catalytic degradation of imidacloprid among other photo-sensitizers in used this study. However, addition of acetone inhibited the photolysis of imidacloprid under the irradiation of UV, indicating the occurrence of competition between acetone and imidacloprid for photos. Mineralization of the imidacloprid was examined to clarify the final photochemical degradation products of the insecticide which were CO2, Cl- and NO3- . Complete photo-oxidation of nitrogen to NO3- occurred very slowly via the intermediate formation of NH4+ and NO2- .

Abstract:Three novel neonicotinoids (cycloxaprid, flupyradifurone and sulfoxaflor) were designed to reduce the biotoxicity for non-target organisms. These neonicotinoids were photolyzed under light radiation, but it was unclear for the photo-enhanced toxicity and influences of the novel modifying group of the three neonicotinoids. The photolysis and photo-enhanced toxicity experiments were performed for the three neonicotinoids, coupled with quantum chemistry calculation, the mechanisms of photolysis, photo-enhanced toxicity and the influences of novel modifying groups were analyzed. The results showed the photolysis pathways were enriched as compared with previous neonicotinoids due to the composition of modifying groups, singlet oxygen and hydroxyl participated the photolysis of cycloxaprid and flupyradifurone. All tested neonicotinoids exhibited photo-enhanced toxicity to Vibrio fischeri . Due to the difference of photolysis mechanism and toxicity to V. fischeri , the photo-enhanced toxicity curves showed diverse variation when histidine, tert -butanol or dissolved organic matters was in presence of the test solutions. The impact of novel modifying groups over photolysis and photo-enhanced toxicity were analyzed based on the comparison with previous neonicotinoids, theoretically predicted UV-Vis spectra and photo-physical/chemical property descriptors. The data showed the composition of novel modifying group increased the light absorption and photo-chemical activities for the three neonicotinoids.

Abstract:The influences of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on neonicotinoid photochemical degradation and product formation in natural waters remain unclear, potentially impacting the sustainability of river systems. Therefore, our overall objective was to investigate the photodegradation mechanisms and phototransformation byproducts of two neonicotinoid pesticides, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam, under simulated sunlight at the microcosm scale, to assess the implications of DOM for insecticide degradation in rivers. Direct and indirect photolysis were investigated using twelve water matrices to identify possible reaction pathways with two DOM sources and three quenching agents. Imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and potential degradants were measured, and reaction pathways identified. The photodegradation rates for imidacloprid (0.156 to 0.531 h−1) and thiamethoxam (0.027 to 0.379 h−1) were measured. The Mississippi River DOM with 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyloxy resulted in rapid formation of imidacloprid desnitro and imidacloprid urea as compared to other treatments. These observations indicate that the production of reactive oxygen species has the potential to influence the photodegradation of imidacloprid, via indirect photolysis, resulting in the formation of degradation products (e.g., imidacloprid desnitro) potentially harmful to non-target species. The findings offer insight into the potential role DOM in river systems has on sustainable water quality related to these two neonicotinoid degradation pathways and byproduct formations.

Abstract:The photodegradations of three selected neonicotinoid insecticides nitenpyram, thiacloprid, and acetamiprid were investigated in both water and soil samples under natural sunlight, UVA light, and UVB light. The results indicate that these insecticides undergo significant degradations when subjected to sunlight, whether they are in deionized (DI) water, tap water, and DI water containing 100 mg/L humic acids or in soil. The degradation half-lives of nitenpyram, thiacloprid, and acetamiprid in tap water under sunlight were found to be 3.7, 4.7, and 8.9 h, respectively, in DI water 5.4, 6.3, 9.1 h, respectively, in DI water containing 100 mg/L humic acids 3.6, 3.3, 6.5 h, respectively, and in soil 7.5, 7.9, and 15.9 h, respectively. The degradation due to hydrolysis was found insignificant as compared to photodegradation. The examination of the effects of light source revealed that the UVB in the sunlight plays a major role in the photodegradation of these three neonicotinoids, and the effects of UVA and visible light are negligible. The analysis on the degradation products indicated that the nitroguanidine group in these insecticides is unstable and prone to break up under sunlight. A total of nine degradation products were detected, of which the health effects and the fate and transport in the environment need to be further studied.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the photolysis mechanism of ketoprofen (KET) under simulated sunlight. The results demonstrated that the photolysis of KET aligned well with pseudo first-order kinetics. Radical scavenging experiments and dissolved oxygen experiments revealed that the superoxide anion radical (O-2(center dot-)) played a primary role in the photolytic process in pure water. Bicarbonate slightly increased the photodegradation of KET through generating carbonate radicals, while DOM inhibited the photolysis via both attenuating light and competing radicals. Moreover, Zhujiang river water inhibited KET phototransformation. Potential KET degradation pathways were proposed based on the identification of products using LC/MS/MS and GC/MS techniques. The theoretical prediction of reaction sites was derived from Frontier Electron Densities (FEDs), which primarily involved the KET decarboxylation reaction. The ecotoxicity of the treated solutions was evaluated by employing Daphnia magna and V. fischeri as biological indicators. Ecotoxicity was also hypothetically predicted through the "ecological structure-activity relationship" (ECOSAR) program, which revealed that toxic products might be generated during the photolysis process.
Nicotinic modulation insecticides act on diverse receptor subtypes with distinct subunit compositions

Abstract:Insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are ligand gated ion channels mainly expressed in the central nervous system of insects. They are the directed targets of nicotinic modulation insecticides including neonicotinoids, the most widely used insecticides in the world. However, the resistance development from pests and the negative impacts on the pollinators affect their applications and create demand for the alternatives. Thus, it is very important to understand the mode of action of these insecticides at the molecular level, which is actually unclear for more than 30 years. In this study, we systematically examined the susceptibility of ten Drosophila melanogaster nAChR subunits mutants against eleven nicotinic modulation insecticides. Our results showed that there are several subtypes of nAChRs with distinct subunits compositions that are responsible for the toxicity of different insecticides, respectively. At least three of them are the major molecular targets of seven structurally similar neonicotinoids in vivo . On the other hand, the spinosyns may exclusively act on the α6 homomeric nAChR but not any other heteromeric pentamers. Behavioral assays using thermogenetic tools further confirmed the bioassay results and support the idea that receptor activation rather than inhibition leads to the insecticidal effects of neonicotinoids. The present findings reveal native nAChR subunit interactions with various insecticides and have important implications for resistance management and the development of novel insecticides targeting this important ion channels. Author Summary The neonicotinoids and spinosyns make up about 27% of the insecticides by world market value. Novel insecticides like sulfoxaflor, flupyradifurone and triflumezopyrim are developed as alternatives due to the negative effects of neonicotinoids on pollinators. Although all act via insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, the mode of action is unclear. Our work shows that these insecticides act on diverse receptor subtypes with distinct subunit compositions. Photolysis of dinotefuran and nitenpyram in water and ice phase: Influence mechanism of temperature over photolysis

Abstract:Neonicotinoids are widely used pesticides around the world, but the photolysis of neonicotinoids in cold agricultural region are still in blank. This paper aimed to study the influence of cold temperature over photolysis of neonicotinoids. To this end, the photolysis rates and photoproducts of dinotefuran and nitenpyram in water, ice and freeze-thawing condition were determined. Coupled with quantum chemistry calculation, the influence mechanisms of temperature and medium were investigated. The results showed the photolysis rates of neonicotinoids in water condition slightly declined with the lowered temperature due to the photolysis reactions were endothermic reactions. However, the photolysis rates increased by 89.8 %, 59.2 %, 49.4 % and 9.5 % for dinotefuran and nitenpyram in ice and thawing condition, respectively. This phenomenon was posed by the concentration-enhancing effect and change of photo-chemical properties of neonicotinoids in ice condition, which included lowered bond cleavage energy, lowered first excited singlet state energy and expanded light absorption range. The photolysis pathways of the two neonicotinoids did not change in different medium, but the concentration of carboxyl products was relatively higher than that of water condition due to the more amounts of reactive oxygen species in ice medium, which might increase the secondary pollution risk after ice-off in spring due to the higher ecotoxicity to nontarget organism of these photoproducts. The influence of cold temperature and medium change should be considered for the environmental fate and risk assessment of neonicotinoids in cold agricultural region.
Oxidation of solid thin films of neonicotinoid pesticides by gas phase hydroxyl radicals

Abstract:Neonicotinoids (NNs) are commonly found throughout the environment on surfaces such as seeds, soil, vegetation, and blowing dust particles. However, there is a paucity of data on the kinetics and oxidation products formed on contact with the atmosphere which limits understanding of their potentially far-reaching impacts. In this study, in situ attenuated total reflectance (ATR) FTIR spectroscopy was used to investigate the OH oxidation of thin films of three solid NNs, imidacloprid (IMD), dinotefuran (DNF) and clothianidin (CLD) at 295 ± 3 K. The experimentally measured reaction probabilities based on initial rates of NN loss are (1.6 ± 0.8) × 10 −2 for IMD, (1.5 ± 0.6) × 10 −2 for DNF and (0.9 ± 0.2) × 10 −2 for CLD (±1 σ ), suggesting initial NN lifetimes with respect to OH of 10–17 days. The kinetics were interpreted using a multiphase kinetics model, KM-SUB, which showed that the OH uptake and reaction occurred primarily in the surface layer. Products identified by mass spectrometry included carbonyl-, alcohol- and olefin-containing species formed via hydrogen abstraction from aliphatic C–H groups. Additionally, carbonyl-containing desnitro and urea derivative products were observed from secondary reactions of the initially formed photodegradation products. Reaction with OH will contribute to NN loss both during the day as well as at night when there are non-photolytic sources of this radical. Thus, OH reactions with both the parent neonicotinoid and its photodegradation products should be considered in assessing their environmental impacts.
Research on Photocatalytic Degradation Pathway and Degradation Mechanisms of Organics

Abstract:In this review, three degradation mechanisms, pathways and intermediate products of various organic compounds for photocatalytic degradation by using different photocatalysts are discussed in detail. Three degradation mechanisms are as following: (1) Holes in valence bond and resulting OH center dot radicals generated from holes oxidize the organics, (2) resulting OH center dot radicals and the O-2(center dot-) generated from conduction band electrons oxidize the organics, (3) dye sensitization. The organic matters can be oxidized by several oxidizing species. Under the condition of various light irradiation, photocatalyst can produce electron and hole to form oxidizing species, which have enough oxidization capability to decompose those organic compounds. Most researchers agreed with the mechanisms of electron /O-2 or hole oxidizing, which happened in the photodegradation process. However, dye sensitization is also an important mechanism for photodegradation. In addition, photodegradation intermediate products and pathways of 48 organic compounds are illuminated in detail. They are 1,2-diethyl phthalate, 2,3-dichlorophenol, 2-naphthol, 3,3'-dimethylbiphenyl-4,4'-diamine (o-Tolidine), 3-chloropyridine, 3-nitroacetophenone, methylene blue, trimelitic acid, 4-chlorophenol, pirimiphos-methyl, propanil, molinate, imzazpyr, 4-nitrophenol, methomyl, iodosulfuron methylester, imipramine, chlorfenvinphos, rhodamine B, atrazine, chlorfenapyr, methylparaben, malachite green, C.I. acid red, aniline, 4-chlorophenol, chlorothalonil, dichlofluanid, cyromazine, decabromodiphenyl ether, dipyrone, ethanol, fluroxypyr, hexachlorocyclohexane, maleic acid, fumaric acid, malic acid, metanil yellow, methyl orange, methyl red, methyl-tert-butyl ether, naphthalene, tetrachloroethylene, trichloroethylene, triane, Ph-triole, Ph-triane, dicyclanil. The degradation routes and the intermediate products of these 48 organic compounds will provide scientific researchers with the proof to prepare novel and ideal photocatalysts with perfect crystallinity and photodegradation methods in this field.
Normotensive sodium loading in normal man: regulation of renin secretion during beta-receptor blockade.

Abstract:Saline administration may change renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) activity and sodium excretion at constant mean arterial pressure (MAP). We hypothesized that such responses are elicited mainly by renal sympathetic nerve activity by beta1-receptors (beta1-RSNA), and tested the hypothesis by studying RAAS and renal excretion during slow saline loading at constant plasma sodium concentration (Na+ loading; 12 micromol Na+.kg(-1).min(-1) for 4 h). Normal subjects were studied on low-sodium intake with and without beta1-adrenergic blockade by metoprolol. Metoprolol per se reduced RAAS activity as expected. Na+ loading decreased plasma renin concentration (PRC) by one-third, plasma ANG II by one-half, and plasma aldosterone by two-thirds (all P < 0.05); surprisingly, these changes were found without, as well as during, acute metoprolol administration. Concomitantly, sodium excretion increased indistinguishably with and without metoprolol (16 +/- 2 to 71 +/- 14 micromol/min; 13 +/- 2 to 55 +/- 13 micromol/min, respectively). Na+ loading did not increase plasma atrial natriuretic peptide, glomerular filtration rate (GFR by 51Cr-EDTA), MAP, or cardiac output (CO by impedance cardiography), but increased central venous pressure (CVP) by approximately 2.0 mmHg (P < 0.05). During Na+ loading, sodium excretion increased with CVP at an average slope of 7 micromol.min(-1).mmHg(-1). Concomitantly, plasma vasopressin decreased by 30-40% (P < 0.05). In conclusion, beta1-adrenoceptor blockade affects neither the acute saline-mediated deactivation of RAAS nor the associated natriuretic response, and the RAAS response to modest saline loading seems independent of changes in MAP, CO, GFR, beta1-mediated effects of norepinephrine, and ANP. Unexpectedly, the results do not allow assessment of the relative importance of RAAS-dependent and -independent regulation of renal sodium excretion. The results are compatible with the notion that at constant arterial pressure, a volume receptor elicited reduction in RSNA via receptors other than beta1-adrenoceptors, decreases renal tubular sodium reabsorption proximal to the macula densa leading to increased NaCl concentration at the macula densa, and subsequent inhibition of renin secretion.
A facile strategy for photocatalytic degradation of seven neonicotinoids over sulfur and oxygen co-doped carbon nitride

Abstract:Mounting evidence highlights the negative impacts of neonicotinoids on non-target organisms and ecosystem, yet there are a few of methods to address the residual neonicotinoids in environment. Herein, series of sulfur and oxygen co-doped carbon nitride (SOCNx) were successfully synthesized via one-step thermal polymerization and applied in photodegradation of multi-neonicotinoids (dinotefuran, acetamiprid, clothianidin, thiacloprid, imidacloprid, nitenpyram and thiamethoxam) simultaneously for the first time. Unique tubular structure was observed at the specific doping ratio, which enhanced both mass transfer and specific surface area of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). The doping process changed the morphology of g-C3N4 materials and also affected its photocatalytic performance. The degrading rate of optimized material (SOCN8) for nitenpyram could surpass 90% just in 30 min under visible light in aqueous matrix. The degradation for target insecticide increased maximum efficiency of 57.6% compared to bulk g-C3N4. Moreover, the possible mechanism of the degradation process was proposed. The results revealed that photon-induced hole (h+) was the primary active species during the degradation of seven investigated neonicotinoids. Moreover, the SOCN8 showed excellent recyclability after four consecutive cycles, which implied promising applications for pesticide-contaminated water remedy.

Abstract:The degradation modes and characteristics of different pesticides were introduced. In addition, this paper also describes the degradation mechanism of different pesticides, classifies, and summarizes the methods of degradation products identification. For the sake of human life health and better biological environment, we should have a familiar knowledge of the natural degradation of pesticides and understand the photo-hydrolysis and its influencing factors (temperature, pH, light, etc.). Through the degradation mechanism and influencing factors, the degradation time could be accelerated and it also provides a theoretical basis and basic support for the treatment of pesticide residues in the future.

Abstract:Phenylurea herbicides are widely used to control unwanted plant growth, but can linger in the environment. Photodegradation is a key mechanism by which these compounds can be transformed. This paper investigates the direct photoabsorption and relaxation of twelve phenylurea compounds (chlorbromuron, chlortoluron, diuron, fenuron, fluometuron, isoproturon, linuron, methiuron, metobromuron, metoxuron, monolinuron, monuron) using density functional theory. Ground state structures are treated at the B3LYP-D3/def2-svp level of theory and excited states are computed using CAM-B3LYP-D3/def2-svpd. These molecules are found to be mostly planar and structurally similar in the ground state, with the exception of methiuron which has a significant distortion. The vertical excitation energies are affected by the presence of halogen substituents and trends in the relaxation of these states are observed. Specifically, halogenated compounds generally have a local excited state minimum corresponding to a stretched carbon-halogen bond, phenylureas containing a methoxy group on the nitrogen have a local minimum corresponding to a twisted urea group and/or a minimum corresponding to the breaking of the nitrogen–oxygen bond between the urea and the methoxy group. The results are discussed in the context of known photodegradation mechanisms for this class of compounds.
