Abstract:Previous studies have shown that the application of soil amendments is efficient in reducing acidity and heavy metal bioavailability in mine soils. However, it remains a challenge for environmentalists to predict accurately and control economically the re-acidification in re-vegetated mine soils. In this study, net acid generation (NAG) test and bioassay technique were employed to assess the effectiveness of the amendments [including lime, N-P-K (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) fertilizer, phosphate and river sediment] on re-acidification and heavy metal immobilization in an extremely acid (pH < 3) mine soil. Our results suggested that NAG test was a rapid and accurate approach to assess the effectiveness of the amendments on re-acidification potential of the mine soil. Interestingly, it was found that phosphate and river sediment played quite specific roles in preventing the re-acidification in the mine soil. In addition, the results also indicated that the addition of 25 t ha(-1) lime combined with river sediment (30%) might be an economical method to successfully control the acidification and re-acidification in the extremely acid mine soil, allowing the re-establishment of the plants. Collectively, our results implied that the combined use of NAG test and bioassay assessment was effective in evaluating a reclamation strategy for extremely acidic mine soils.
Soilless revegetation: An efficient means of improving physicochemical properties and reshaping microbial communities of high-salty gold mine tailings

Abstract:Soilless revegetation is a cost-effective and eco-friendly method for the ecological restoration of gold mine tailings. However, due to gold mine tailings are high-salty, alkaline and low-nutrient, little research has been done on soilless revegetation of gold mine tailings. The aim of study was to apply soilless revegetation to gold mine tailings, and investigate the changes of physicochemical properties and microbial communities of tailings after soilless revegetation. Six selected herbaceous plants (Melilotus officinalis, Xanthium sibiricum, Festuca elata, Zoysia japonica, Amaranthus tricolor L., Artemisia desertorum) grew well on the bare tailings, and their heights reached as high as 16.28 cm after 90 days. After soilless revegetation, tailings salinity dramatically dropped from 547.15 to 129.24 μS cm-1, and pH went down from 8.68 to 7.59 at most. The content of available phosphorus (AP), available nitrogen (AN) and organic matter (OM) in tailings gradually improved, especially the content of AP and OM increased 53.36% and 52.58%, respectively. Furthermore, microbial metabolic activity and diversity in tailings obviously increased 70.33-264.70% and 1.64-13.97% respectively. The relative abundance of potential plant growth-promoting bacteria increased 1.40-3.05%, while the relative abundance of opportunistic pathogens and halophilic bacteria decreased 10.58-17.03% and 2.98-6.52% respectively. Such variations of microbial communities were beneficial for tailings restoration. This study provided insight into soilless revegetation and its impact on tailings microorganisms, which could be a new strategy for ecological restoration of gold mine tailings.

Abstract:Vegetation coverage of metal tailings is an important method for environmental governance. Colonization of plants on some nutrient-poor tailings is difficult. Therefore, the addition of clean soil (CSA) is needed to support plant growth. However, the promotion of plant growth by CSA has been widely reported, and there is a lack of reports on the effects of CSA on soil microbial communities and nutrient cycling-related genes. In this study, using ryegrass as the selected plant, the phytoremediation of tungsten tailings was conducted under conditions of CSA. The research focused on investigating the variation in the microbial community's structure and elucidating variations in the metabolic pathways and relative abundance of nutrient cycling genes. The results suggest that CSA and planting ryegrass increased the microbial richness in tailings. CSA had a negative impact on the microbial community's evenness (Shannon index) and richness (Simpson index). In all treatments, the relative abundance of Pseudomonadota ranged from 64.4% to 75.2% and dominated the microbial community. High levels of CSA (T3) reduced the relative abundance of Pseudomonadota by 10–13%, and a higher relative abundance of Ascomycota was observed after planting ryegrass. At the genus level, the growth of ryegrass benefitted from a decrease in the abundance of Pseudomonas, Phenobacterum, and Sphingobium after CSA. Cultivation of ryegrass increased the relative abundance of the nitrogen-fixing bacterium Bradyrhizobium (0.9%), which is beneficial for the sustainability of soil remediation in tailings. Metabolism was the primary activity process of microorganisms in tailing soil, with a relative abundance of 71.3% to 72.7%. Generally, the changes in the microbial community's composition indicated that CSA and cultivation of ryegrass were beneficial for tailings. Still, the negative effects of CSA on microbial evenness (Shannon index) and richness (Simpson index) need attention.

Abstract:Soilless revegetation is a promising method for ecological restoration of nonferrous metallic tailings because of its low-cost and eco-friendliness. However, revegetation is difficult to construct in the tailings due to the high heavy metal concentration, poor water retention capacity and low fertility. In this study, soilless revegetation was successfully carried out by using peat and bentonite amendments. The results showed that amendment addition significantly increased the F.elata seed germination percentage, plant length and fresh biomass by 14.9%-24.3%, 48.9%-90.4% and 51.9%-88.1%, respectively. Such improvements probably referred to the variation of rhizosphere tailing microecological characteristics. Amendment addition dramatically improved tailing available NPK by 39.76-102.13%, 2.69-40.81% and 2.42-20.02%, respectively, and reduced pH from alkaline to relative neutral. Besides, heavy metal bioavailability was significantly decreased that the acid soluble fraction decreased by 1.7%-11.5%, resulting in the reduction of heavy metal concentration in F.elata plant. Amendments also increased the rhizosphere tailing microbial species richness and the relative abundance of ecologically beneficial genera including Arthrobacter, Altererythrobacter and Bacillus. This study not only provided a green and efficient method for remediation of oligotrophic and high heavy metal contaminated nonferrous metallic tailing, but also demonstrated relevant mechanisms of amendment on promoting soilless revegetation.
Revegetation of copper mine tailings with ryegrass and willow

Abstract:To restore vegetation on metal mine tailings is very difficult because they often contain high concentrations of heavy metals, low nutrient content and low water retention capacity. This study involved 3 experiments that evaluated the effects of 4 treatment amendments: montmorillonite, rice straw, organic manure and chemical fertilizer on the growth of ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and willow (Salix viminalis L.) with Cu and Zn mine tailings from two mining areas. The results showed that ryegrass was the most tolerant of 4 crops to Cu toxicity. Also when organic manure, which contained high concentrations of inorganic salts, was added to the mine tailings, it significantly hindered ryegrass growth (P = 0.05). Meanwhile, with ryegrass organic manure significantly increased (P = 0.05) the extractable Cu concentration in both mine tailings. When montmorillonite was used as a mine tailings amendment with willow, the height and tress number at the 1st cut were significantly greater (P = 0.05) than a control without montmorillonite. However there was no significant difference for height, tress number, dry weight or root dry weight at the 2nd cut. So, amendment applications to reduce metal toxicity and increase nutrients retention in mine tailings were essential during revegetation of mine tailings.
The effectiveness of sewage sludge biochar amendment with Boehmeria nivea L. in improving physicochemical properties and rehabilitating microbial communities in mine tailings

Abstract:Biochar amendment can be adopted to improve soil substrate, in turn facilitated phytoremediation. However, improvements to the properties of tailings following different feedstocks of biochar amendment in phytoremediation, particularly the impacts on nitrogen cycle and the related nitrogen-fixing microorganisms remain unclear. In this study, a 100-day pot experiment was designed to determine the co-effects of different combinations of woody and non-woody biochar, namely hibiscus cannabinus core biochar (HB), sewage sludge biochar (SB), chicken manure biochar (MB) and two crops (Cassia alata L., Boehmeria nivea L.). It was found that, on the one hand, biochar amendment directly immobilized heavy metal (loid) contamination in the tailings; on the other hand, biochar amendment, particularly non-woody SB, improved soil properties (i.e., the combination of SB with crops increased the total nitrogen content by 4.7-7.5 times). This indirectly improved phytostabilization (i.e., SB increased crop height 1.5-1.8 fold, root length 3.3-3.7 fold, decreased NH4NO3-extractable Pb, Cu, Cd and also increased the relative abundance of nitrogen-fixing bacteria such as Mesorhizobium, Bradyrhizobium, and Rhizobium). Besides this, redundant analysis shown that the carbon, nitrogen sources, and pH provided by the biochar were identified as the key factors associated with the nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Through the comprehensive evaluation of different biochar amendment in phytoremediation, it was found that the non-woody SB got higher comprehensive score (3.1-3.6) in biochar amendment in phytoremediation, especially in Boehmeria nivea L. Thus, the combination of non-woody SB and Boehmeria nivea L. improved microbial function, while the microorganisms in turn promoted crop growth. Our results revealed the prospect of using non-woody SB assisted Boehmeria nivea L. for phytoremediation in multi-metal mine tailings.
Effect of Different Amendments on Ryegrass Growth in Copper Mine Tailings

Abstract:Montmorillonite, rice straw, organic manure and chemical fertilizer were used as amendment materials for copper mine tailings, and their effects on mine tailing pH, nutrients and metal availability to ryegrass were investigated. Chemical fertilization was the most effective one in improving ryegrass growth in mine tailings among the amendment materials examined. It was found that montmorillonite raised biomass of ryegrass at the 1st and 2nd cuts, but it did not give further positive effects at the 3rd and 4th cuts. The effect of organic materials oil ryegrass growth was not so good as expected, mainly due to their slow decomposition in mine tailings with less soil microorganisms. Available Cu and Zn contents in mine tailings decreased in the presence of montmorillonite but increased when rice straw and organic manure were used as amendments. Cu and Zn contents in ryegrass decreased with increasing the rate of montmorillonite application but increased with the rate of rice straw. Zn showed much stronger mobility from soil to ryegrass than Cu, and almost all the available N and P in mine tailings, except for the treatments with organic manure, were completely consumed after ryegrass had grown in mine tailings for more than four months and been harvested for four times. Owing to its large biomass and high metal uptake, ryegrass is a potential plant for remediation of metal contaminated soils in practice.
Use of Tolerant Population of P. Distichum for Revegetation of a Pb/Zn Mine Tailings at Lechang: Field Experiment

Abstract:A field trial was conducted on Lechang Pb/Zn mine tailings at Shaoguan, Guangdong Province, to evaluate the growth of a metal tolerant population of Paspalum distichum on Pb/Zn tailings amended with soil and domestic refuse. Chemical analysis indicated that the toxic level of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd) and deficiency of major nutrients (N, P, K and organic materials) were the major constraints of the tailings for plant establishment. In the first three months, P. distichum could successfully grow on pure tailings, but the addition of soil and domestic refuse significantly improved growth of the grass, the application of limestone not only improved plant growth, but also inhibited the uptake of heavy metals by plants. The second harvest after one-year growth indicated that there was significant increase of biomass in TDL treatment (tailings+domestic refuse+limestone) compared with the first harvest. Generally, there were evident decreases of heavy metals contents in plant in the second harvest. Results presented here demonstrated that use of tolerant species together with waste materials might be a cost-effective method for revegetation of mine tailings.
Blended municipal compost and biosolids materials for mine reclamation: Long-term field studies to explore metal mobility, soil fertility and microbial communities

Abstract:Application of stable soil amendments is often the key to successful phytostabilization and rehabilitation of mine tailings, and microbial guilds are primary drivers of many geochemical processes promoted by these amendments. Field studies were set up at a tailings management area near Sudbury, Ontario to examine performance of blends of lime stabilized municipal biosolids and compost at nine different rates over thick (1 m) municipal compost covers planted with agricultural crops. Based on biogeochemical variability of the substrates four and ten years after application of the initial compost cover, the experimental plots could be classified into three categories: "Low" rate (0-100 t ha-1 biosolids), "Medium" rate (200-800 t ha-1), and "High" rate (1600-3200 t ha-1) treatments. The addition of biosolids materials to the thick compost cover at rates higher than 100 t ha-1 significantly reduced C:N ratio of the substrates, available phosphorus, and some of the nutrient cations, while notably increasing inorganic carbon and the potential solubility of Ni and Cu. This suggests that increasing biosolids application rates may not equivalently ameliorate soil quality and geochemical stability. Correspondingly, microbial communities were altered by biosolids additions, further intensifying the negative impacts of biosolids on long-term efficiency of the initial compost cover. Abundance of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignocellulose decomposers (as key drivers of mineralization and humification) was significantly reduced by "Medium" and "High" rate treatments. Most DNA sequences with high affinity to denitrifiers were detected in "High" rate treatments where geochemical conditions were optimal for higher microbial denitrification activities. These findings have implications for improving the long-term efficiency of reclamation and environmental management programs in mine tailings of northern temperate climates.

Abstract:Remediation of gold tailings is often difficult due to their extremely barren nature and highly heavy metal concentrations. Returning green manure and applying sewage sludge compost have the beneficial effects of providing nutrients and improving the soil environment. The effects of green manure plants, alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), ryegrass (Lolium perenne Linn.), and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea), returning in situ on nutrients, bioavailability of trace metals, and community structure of microorganism in gold tailings amended with 0%, 5%, and 10% (weight/weight) sewage sludge compost on the top 4 cm of tailings (SSC-5, SSC-10) were investigated in a pot experiment. The results showed that the plant biomass and microbial biomass carbon in tailings significantly increased in the treatments with sewage sludge compost. The available N and available P and the availability of Zn decreased markedly with the returning of alfalfa and ryegrass. Moreover, through high-throughput sequencing, it was found that the returning of alfalfa had positive effects on the bacterial community richness but a negative impact on the fungal community richness. The microbial community diversity was reduced in the treatment without sewage sludge compost amendment and with alfalfa returning. However, the microbial community diversity was enriched in the treatment of alfalfa returning with sewage sludge compost. In each plant species, 9 dominant bacterial phyla and 10 dominant fungi phyla could be detected. Returning alfalfa green manure and applying sewage sludge compost led to a relative increase in the abundance of Proteobacteria and Ascomycota. These results demonstrated that returning alfalfa and applying sewage sludge compost could be effective in the ecological restoration of gold tailings.

Abstract:The implementation of phytoremediation strategies under arid and semiarid climates requires the use of appropriate plant species capable of withstanding multiple abiotic stresses. In this study, we assessed the combined effects of organo-mineral amendments and microbial inoculants on the chemical and biological properties of mine tailings, as well as on the growth of native plant species under drought stress conditions. Plants were cultivated in pots containing 1 kg of a mixture of mine tailings and topsoil (i.e., pre-mined superficial soil) in a 60:40 ratio, 6% marble sludge, and 10% sheep manure. Moreover, a consortium of four drought-resistant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) was inoculated. Three irrigation levels were applied: well-watered, moderate water deficit, and severe water deficit, corresponding to 80%, 45%, and 30% of field capacity, respectively. The addition of topsoil and organo-mineral amendments to mine tailings significantly improved their chemical and biological properties, which were further enhanced by bacterial inoculation and plants' establishment. Water stress negatively impacted enzymatic activities in amended tailings, resulting in a significant decrease in acid and alkaline phosphatases, urease, and dehydrogenase activities. Similar results were obtained for bacteria, fungi, and actinomycete abundance. PGPR inoculation positively influenced the availability of phosphorus, total nitrogen, and organic carbon, while it increased alkaline phosphatase, urease (by about 10%), and dehydrogenase activity (by 50%). The rhizosphere of Peganum harmala showed the highest enzymatic activity and number of culturable microorganisms, especially in inoculated treatments. Severe water deficit negatively affected plant growth, leading to a 40% reduction in the shoot biomass of both Atriplex halimus and Pennisetum setaceum compared to well-watered plants. P. harmala showed greater tolerance to water stress, evidenced by lower decreases observed in root and shoot length and dry weight compared to well-watered plants. The use of bioinoculants mitigated the negative effects of drought on P. harmala shoot biomass, resulting in an increase of up to 75% in the aerial biomass in plants exposed to severe water deficit. In conclusion, the results suggest that the combination of organo-mineral amendments, PGPR inoculation, and P. harmala represents a promising approach to enhance the phytoremediation of metal-polluted soils under semiarid conditions.

Abstract:The vegetative cover of mine tailings with grasses has environmental benefits and positive impacts on public health by improving air and water quality, as well as the overall well-being of surrounding communities. This study evaluated the ability of Cynodon dactylon L. grass in the cover of a mine tailing using three doses of vermicompost (Vlow [60 Mg ha-1], Vmedium [80 Mg ha-1], and Vhigh [100 Mg ha-1]) to improve the conditions of the site, which was physically and chemically characterized. The concentrations of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) were determined before and during the experiment. Ninety-six and 202 days after planting (dap), grass was harvested to determine the concentrations of the potentially toxic elements (PTE) in the root and aerial sections. The production of dry matter and the growth of the grass were evaluated. Results showed that, before the experiment was established, the tailing had a low concentration of organic matter. After incorporating the vermicompost, an increase was observed in the concentrations of phosphorous (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg). Ninety-six days after planting, in the treatment with the low dose of vermicompost, C. dactylon absorbed 202.13 mg Pb kg-1, 37.26 mg Ni kg-1, and 164.82 mg Zn kg-1 in its roots. Also at 96 dap, the highest PTE concentrations were found in the treatments with the highest dose of vermicompost. The greatest production of dry matter (231.55 kg ha-1 at 96 dap) and growth of the grass (9.7 cm, 73 dap) occurred in the treatment with the high dose of vermicompost, which highlights its efficiency in favoring its development and improving the conditions of the tailing. The absorption of the PTE by the grass highlights its contribution towards the reduction of dispersion and runoff of particles from tailings.

Abstract:Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a form of environmental pollution from mining activity that can negatively affect soil environments by acidification, salinisation, and metal(loid) contamination. The use of plants to remediate (phytoremediation) these impacted environments while generating plant-based value is a promising approach to more accessible and cost-benefiting restoration of post-mining, marginal lands. In this study, a 3-month growth-chamber pot experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of co-cropping two plant species, Chrysopogon zizanioides (vetiver grass) and the legume Medicago truncatula (barrel clover) with a wheat straw biochar amendment on the phytostabilisation of metal(loid)s Cr, Zn, and As and the phytoextraction of rare earth element (REE) in an AMD impacted soil from a gold mining region in South Africa. The results showed that co-cropping with vetiver significantly lowered the legume's Cr, Zn, and As root contents by 80%, 32% and 54%, respectively, and improved the plant's overall metal(loid) tolerance by increasing its translocation from root to shoot tissue. The biochar further inhibited root uptake of Cr and Zn, by 71% and 36%, and increased the legume biomass by 40%. Both plant species and cropping treatments exhibited low REE extraction capabilities by shoot tissue, which accounted for less than 0.2% of total soil REE contents. The study shows that co-cropping with vetiver and biochar amendment are effective tools for the phytoremediation of AMD impacted soil mainly by lowering plant uptake and improving plant metal(loid) tolerance. Likely mechanisms at play include the alteration of rhizosphere chemistry and species-specific physiological and molecular responses. These effects offer support for the phytostabilisation of AMD impacted soil with the generation of plant-based value through dual (and safe) cultivation (phytoprotection) rather than through REE recovery from plant biomass (phytoextraction). These techniques could allow for the simultaneous restoration of post-mining, mining-impacted and marginal lands with agricultural production.

Abstract:This study aims to evaluate the role of indigenous microorganisms in the mobilization of potentially toxic elements (PTE) and rare-earth elements (REE), the influence of the bioavailability of carbon sources that might boost microbial leaching, and the generation of neutral/alkaline mine drainage from alkaline tailings. These tailings, with significant concentrations of total organic carbon (TOC), were mainly colonized by bacteria belonging to the genera Sphingomonas, Novosphingobium and Solirubrobacter , and fungi of the genera Alternaria, Sarocladium and Aspergillus . Functionality analysis suggests the capability of these microorganisms to leach PTE and REE. Bio-/leaching tests confirmed the generation of neutral mine drainage, the influence of organic substrate, and the leaching of higher concentrations of PTE and REE due to the production of organic acids and siderophores by indigenous microorganisms. In addition, this study offers some insights into a sustainable alternative for reprocessing PMC alkaline tailings to recover REE.

Abstract:The exploitation of ion-adsorption rare earth element (REE) deposits in South China has left large areas of mine tailings. However, limited remediation practices on these tailings have been reported, and how the remediation strategies and economic plants cultivation affect the biogeochemical cycles of nutrients, REEs and Al remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of the combination of the addition of soil amendment and the root development and activity of a fiber plant ramie (Boehmeria nivea L.) on the availability and distribution of nutrients, as well as of REEs and other potentially toxic elements (e.g. Al) in the soil-plant system. The results showed that the application of organic amendment and ramie planting induced a significant increase in soil pH, total carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and other nutrient (e.g. P and Ca) concentrations, while led to a decrease of 80-90% and 60-90% in soil extractable REE and Al concentrations respectively. Matrices of correlation showed that soil pH, total C, N, and P concentrations were among the most important factors controlling the availability of soil REEs and Al, and root characteristics (e.g. fine root length). The total C, N, P and extractable nutrient concentrations, and electrical conductivity were higher in the rhizosphere soils of ramie than those in the bulk soils. Moreover, more than 60% of the quantity of REE and Al in the whole ramie plant was stored within the thick roots. These results showed that, in addition to amendment, the effects induced by the roots of ramie could further improve soil properties through C input, nutrient mobilization and toxic element stabilization. Our study concludes that ramie planting with organic amendment is a promising phytostabilization strategy for the remediation of REE mine tailings in South China.

Abstract:Mine driven trace elements’ pollution entails environmental risks and causes soil infertility. In the last decades, in situ techniques such as phytostabilization have become increasingly important as ways to tackle these negative impacts. The aim of this study was to test the individual and combined effects of different aided phytostabilization techniques using substrate from barren tailings of a Cu mine, characterized by extreme infertility (high acidity and deficiency of organic matter and nutrients). The experiment analyzed the growth of Populus nigra L. planted alone (P) or in co-cropping with Trifolium repens L. (PT), in pots containing mine soil amended with compost (1, 10, compost, soil, w/w) non inoculated (NI) or inoculated with plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGP), mycorrhizae (MYC) or a combination of bacterial and fungal inocula (PGPMYC). Non-amended, non-planted and non-inoculated reference ports were also prepared. Plants were harvested after 110 days of plant development and several biometric and phytopathological parameters (stem height, aerial biomass, root biomass, wilting, chlorosis, pest and death) and macro and micronutrient composition were determined. The growth substrate was analyzed for several physicochemical (pH, CEC e , and exchangeable cations, total C and N, P Olsen and availability of trace elements) and microbiological (community level physiological profiles: activity, richness and diversity) parameters. The use of the amendment, P. nigra plantation, and inoculation with rhizobacteria were the best techniques to reduce toxicity and improve soil fertility, as well as to increase the plant survival and growth. Soil bacterial functional diversity was markedly influenced by the presence of plants and the inoculation with bacteria, which suggests that the presence of plant regulated the configuration of a microbial community in which the inoculated bacteria thrive comparatively better. The results of this study support the use of organic amendments, tolerant plants, and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria to reduce environmental risk and improve fertility of soils impacted by mining.

Abstract:Mining of Zn and Pb metal ores, mainly blende (ZnS) and galena (PbS), in Cave del Predil (I) valley from 1800 to 1991 produced a huge amount of tailings (estimated about 20 &#8226;106 m3). Such tailings had been prevalently accumulated close to the Rio del Lago creek or used to reshape the excavation area. These tailings are rich in toxic metals (i.e. Pb, Zn, Tl) under different chemical and mineralogical forms (sulphide, sulphate, carbonate, etc.), representing a potential health risk to the local ecosystem. The gradual oxidation of sulfide minerals tend to mobilize these toxic metals, that in part are retained due to the calcareous nature of rock, but they are partially leached to the trans-boundary Slizza/Gailitz creek.Phytocapping represents a promising strategy to reduce the dispersion of contaminants into the air as dust particles and to groundwater, but the establishment of a permanent vegetation is strongly unpaired by the toxicity of this substrate. Immobilization techniques, using abundant, rather inexpensive, natural and/or industrial by-products, may offer an effective alternative to conventional methods to reduce the metals mobility and bio-availability.The aims of this study are to assess: (i) the effect of metal immobilization treatments on mine tailings and (ii) the uptake and translocation of Pb, Zn and Tl in the metalliferous plant species Biscutella laevigata (L.) and Silene vulgaris (L.).The mobility of toxic metals has been evaluated either in batch extractions (synthetic rain, TCLP) or by leaching columns in the native mine tailings and in tailings treated by different amendments (zero-valent Fe, Fe(II)+digestate, biochar).The plants were collected respectively upstream (2 stations) and downstream (5 stations) the mining site in the sediment banks of Slizza/Gailitz creek. In each stations, six specimens were sampled for each species. In addition, at each plant collection point, a composite bulk soil and rhizospheric soil sample was excavated along the 0&#8211;20 cm profile. Plant specimens were divided into two fractions: root apparatus and aboveground biomass. The soil and plant samples were oven-dried and acid-digested in a microwave oven. Total Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Tl and Zn contents in the extracts were determined by ICP-MS. The bioavailable metal fraction of Cd, Pb, Tl and Zn was determined by selective extractants.Addition of Zero-valent Fe showed the strongest decrease of leached metals trough the soil columns, whereas the addition of Fe(II)+digestate strongly increased the concentration of metals in leachates, probably because of the acidification caused by Fe oxidation/precipitation.Biscutella laevigata and Silene vulgaris are metal tolerant species. Pb concentration in B. laevigata ranged between 0.01-669 and 0.01-234 mg kg-1, respectively in roots and shoots. In the same fractions of S. vulgaris Pb ranged between 0.01-891 and 0.01-208 mg kg-1. As for Zn, root and shoot concentration in B. laevigata were 13.4-1461 and 20.6-3390 mg kg-1 respectively, whereas in S. vulgaris 2.36-1829 and 17.2-1590 mg kg-1. The response of metal uptake and accumulation in plant species grown in treated mine tailings are currently under observation.
Selected rhizobacteria facilitated phytoremediation of barren and heavy metal contaminated gold mine tailings by Festuca arundinacea

Abstract:Gold mine tailings pose a significant challenge for phytoremediation due to their poor nutrition and heavy metal pollution. Rhizobacteria-assisted phytoremediation is a promising method, yet limited research has been conducted on its application in gold mine tailings. In this study, rhizobacteria R1 ( Bacillus paramycoides ) and R2 ( Klebsiella michiganensisW14T ) were isolated from the rhizosphere of Festuca arundinacea ( F. arundinacea ) to enhance the phytoremediation of gold mine tailings. Our results showed that inoculation of R1 and R2 led to a significant increase in the average germination rates of F. arundinacea by 36.9% and 16.5%, respectively. Furthermore, the average plant height increased by 68.3% and 53.4%, respectively. Importantly, after inoculation with rhizobacteria, the contents of Mn, Pb, and As in F. arundinacea increased by 13.2–33.9%, 40.1–41.0%, and 98.1%–124.5%, respectively, indicating that the rhizobacteria enhanced the plant uptake of heavy metals. The improved nutrient content and enzyme activity in the tailings after inoculation with rhizobacteria were positively correlated with the heavy metal content in F. arundinacea. In addition, inoculation of rhizobacteria significantly altered the microbial community structure of the tailings, with Bacillus becoming the dominant genus in the rhizosphere tailings of F. arundinacea after R1 inoculation. Overall, our findings demonstrated that rhizobacteria R1 was better to enhance the phytoremediation of gold mine tailings. These results offer valuable insights into the mechanism of rhizobacteria-assisted phytoremediation and provide a practical method to enhance remediation of gold mine tailings.

Growth and Heavy Metal Uptake of 15 Plant Species Grown in Lead/Zinc Mine Tailings

Abstract:A field experiment on vegetation restoration was carried out in the abandoned lead-zinc tailings for 3 years with 15 plant species to evaluate their potential adaptation to the tailings. Plant species expressed different tolerance to stress of the tailings. Most species appeared the heavy metal-induced etiolation, defoliation, or growing stopped. There were significant differences in the growth rate of height and base diameter, root growth, and biomass among the species. The mine tailings reduced the root distribution depth, and stimulated the max length of lateral roots, the fine root ratio, and increased to different extents the mass allocation proportion to roots in all species. Four nitrogen-fixed species, Alnus cremastogyne, Amorpha fruticosa, Lespedeza cuneata, and Medicago sativa, suffered from mild damage, and root nodules appeared in their roots. In addition, Rhus typhina and Nerium indicum had higher tolerance, which kept higher relative growth rate and biomass. The results showed that accumulation of lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) differed dependent on plant species, their organs, and the heavy metals. Generally, most plant species had higher concentrations of Pb and Zn in roots than that in shoots, while some of tree species had higher Zn concentrations in shoots than that in roots. Among the 15 species, L. cuneata had the highest contents of Pb and Zn in shoots in per square meter of ground (65 and 199 mg·m-2, respectively). A. fruticosa had the second high Pb and Zn contents, reaching to 43 and 127 mg·m-2, respectively. Based on overall performance we selected eight species candidate: A. fruticosa, L. cuneata, R. typhina, N. indicum, A. cremastogyne, R. chinensis, M. sativa, and Cercis canadensis, which would be suitable for the vegetation restoration in lead and zinc mine tailings, especially the nitrogen-fixing species.
Effects of composite materials and revegetation on soil nutrients, chemical and microbial properties in rare earth tailings

Abstract:The mining of ionic rare earth elements in Ganzhou left large area of barren tailings with severe vegetation destruction in pressing needs of remediation. However, the remediating effects of soil additives combined with revegetation on the preservation of nutrients in the tailings and microbial communities were rarely studied. For this purpose, pilot experiments were implemented in a field, with the control group (CK) only cultivating plants without adding materials, and three treatments including peanut straw biochar composite (T1), phosphorus‑magnesium composite (T2) and modified zeolite composite (T3) along with the cultivation of Medicago sativa L., Paspalum vaginatum Sw. and Lolium perenne L. Soil pH and organic matter in CK significantly decreased from 4.90 to 4.17 and from 6.62 g/kg to 3.87 g/kg after six months, respectively (p ≤ 0.05), while all the treatments could effectively buffer soil acidification (over 5.74) and delay the loss of soil organic matter. Soil cation exchange capacity was still below the detection limit in all the groups except T2. The results of rainfall runoff monitoring indicated that compared with CK, only T2 could significantly reduce the runoff loss of soil NO3- and SO42- by 45.61 %-75.78 % and 64.03 %-76.12 %, respectively (p ≤ 0.05). Compared with CK, the bacterial diversity in T2 and T3 significantly increased 21.18 % and 28.15 %, respectively (p ≤ 0.05), while T1 didn't change the bacterial or fungal diversity (p > 0.05). Co-occurrence network analysis showed that compared with CK, the whole microbial communities interacted more closely in the three treatments. Functional prediction of the microbial communities revealed all the treatments were dominated by carbon transforming bacteria and saprotrophic fungi except T2. This study demonstrated that the composite materials combined with revegetation couldn't retain soil nitrogen compounds and sulfate in rare earth tailings in the long term.
