Abstract:Material Flow Cost Accounting (MFCA) is an environmental management accounting method that allocates costs to material and energy flows through a process, thereby enabling a simultaneous reduction in environmental impacts alongside an improvement in business and economic efficiency. This study illustrates the versatility of MFCA beyond its usual application to existing production and manufacturing processes. In this paper, MFCA is used to assess the financial viability of two emerging recycling technologies, IRETA2 (Development and Evaluation of Recycling Routes to Recover Tantalum from Electronic Waste) and ReComp (Development of an Innovative, Economically and Ecologically Sensible Recycling Method for Metallised ABS and PC/ABS Composite Waste). These two projects differ in their process structure. Whilst IRETA2 is a strictly linear recycling process, ReComp consists of two process streams, split according to the treatment of its two material fractions. For both projects, the lab-scale experimental results were used to develop an MFCA model of the recycling process scaled at each project partner’s facilities. MFCA was utilised to calculate the projects’ overall profit or loss, the impact of the final products’ market conditions and processing rate (in the case of IRETA2), or machinery capacity (for ReComp) on the overall results. The results show that neither IRETA2 nor ReComp are financially viable based on the current output products’ market value and quantity produced. However, through a sensitivity analysis, it is demonstrated that IRETA2 could become financially viable if the processing rate or market conditions were to improve. Additionally, ReComp could become financially viable if there was an increase in machine capacity. Finally, this paper also explores possible implications of MFCA when applied to emerging recycling technologies on EU policy and strategy, particularly those related to the EU Green Deal, such as extended producer responsibility and supply chain acts.
Evaluating the Environmental and Economic Performance of Municipal Solid Waste Disposal by All-Component Resource Recovery

Abstract:Disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) has become increasingly challenging. In this study, we used life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate environmental impacts and financial performance of a new approach for MSW disposals, namely All-components Resource Recovery (AcRR), which is based on automatic sorting. We compared AcRR with the standardized Waste-to-Energy incineration (WtE) to provide decision-making support for MSW management. The results show that WtE and AcRR are both good MSW resource treatment methods. Through MSW disposal, WtE generates electricity, while AcRR generates secondary resources such as metals, plastics, pulp and organic fertilizers. WtE releases trace amounts of HCl, PM10, heavy metals, dioxins and dust, while AcRR does not produce such pollutants; AcRR produces more odor gases such as SO2 and H2S. AcRR produces four environmental issues, i.e., Global Warming, Acidification, Photochemical Ozone Synthesis, and Eutrophication, each of which has a smaller impact than WtE; WtE has two more impacts than AcRR: Human Toxicity and Soot and Ashes. The total environmental impact potential of WtE is 3.38 times that of AcRR, and the greenhouse gas emission equivalent is 6.82 times that of AcRR. The cost of construction and operation of AcRR is lower than that of WtE, while the net profit of AcRR is much higher. In conclusion, AcRR is able to screen the mixed MSW into various secondary resources with less environmental emissions and environmental impacts and better financial performance; it may be a promising MSW disposal approach, especially for small cities, but a corresponding supporting industrial system is needed.

Life cycle assessment of recycling metallised food packaging plastics using mechanical, thermal and chemical processes

Abstract:Single treatment of metallised food packaging plastics waste (MFPW) has shown disappointing results with recycling rate <20 % due to its complex structure consisting of 10 % aluminium (Al) and 90 % mixed plastic films made of PE, PP, PS, PET, etc. Besides, it is generating many emissions and residues that must be landfilled making it difficult to integrate them into the circular economy. Therefore, a multi-stage recycling (MSR) approach has recently been developed using several sequential mechanical, thermal and chemical processes to recover energy and Al from MFPW with additional revenue for recycling plant operators. The thermal treatment helps to decompose the plastic fraction into wax or oil, gaseous, and solid residue (SR) composed of Al and coal, while the mechanical process can be used as a pre-treatment of MFPW feedstock and SR. Finally, the chemical treatment (leaching and functionalization) can be used to extract Al from SR and to refine coal into carbon microparticles (CPs), respectively. In order to investigate the environmental performance of the proposed MSR system, this research was developed. The investigation was performed using SimaPro life cycle analysis (LCA) tool according to ISO 14040/44 Standards and the impact assessment method is ReCiPe 2016. Five different scenarios were proposed in the constructed LCA layout, namely, conversion of MFPW to a) wax and gas (pyrolysis), b) wax, gas, and aluminium chloride (AlCl₃) (pyrolysis and leaching), c) wax, gas, AlCl₃, and CPs (pyrolysis, leaching, and functionalization), and d) oil, gas, AlCl₃, and CPs (catalytic pyrolysis, leaching, and functionalization). Besides, the oil produced from catalytic pyrolysis is used for generation of electricity (scenario e). The results showed that wax and gas recovery scenario (a) has better environmental potential and environmental benefits compared to incineration practice. The results did not change much after extraction of Al and CPs (scenario b, c), with a few increasing by 2-4% in the total score. While a lot of environmental burdens from upgrading and utilization (Scenario d, e) were recorded, reaching 79 % due to the huge amount of the catalyst was used. Thus, MSR systems have bigger environmental benefits, however, the chemical and catalytic processes still need to be further improved to reduce the effect of terrestrial acidification.

Abstract:The circular economy, as a new model of waste management through energy self-sufficiency and valorisation, can be applied to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Screening waste from WWTP pretreatment is the only waste that is not energetically recovered and thus constrains the achievement of zero waste. Previous studies demonstrated the technical feasibility of producing solid recovered fuel (SRF) from this waste. Environmental benefits, including waste reduction, resource conservation, or reduced greenhouse gas emissions are analysed in this work. Environmental impact is quantified using the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology through the SimaPro 9.2. software and the CML-IA baseline v3.08 impact methodology, that propose 11 impact categories. Five scenarios were established to compare current landfill disposal with the production of densified and non-densified SRF using solar and thermal drying. Within the system boundaries studied, from waste generation to SRF production, results show that landfill is the most environmentally damaging option while producing non-densified SRF using solar drying is the most environmentally viable scenario.

Intracellular recordings of rod responses during dark‐adaptation.

Abstract:1. Dark‐adaptation of rod photoreceptors has been studied in the isolated axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) retina by intracellular recordings. Rod responsiveness was greatly reduced immediately after a 30 sec partial bleach, but partially recovered with time in the dark. 2. In parallel spectrophotometric measurements using isolated retinas, regeneration of the rod pigment could not be detected after a 30 sec bleach. 3. During rod dark‐adaptation, the response of a rod to a given stimulus increased in amplitude, duration, and rate of rise but did not recover completely to the dark‐adapted values. Response latency was lengthened immediately after a bleach but ultimately returned to the dark‐adapted level. 4. The time courses of dark‐adaptation determined on the basis of the intensity of a stimulus needed to evoke a response having a criterion amplitude, a criterion duration, or a criterion rate of rise were similar. On the other hand changes in latency of the response and magnitude of the saturated amplitude followed different time courses. Change in log threshold was found to be related to change in saturated amplitude by an exponential function during dark‐adaptation. 5. After bleaching 10% or less of the rod pigment, the kinetics of both recovery of log threshold and decrease in absorbance at 400 nm (metarhodopsin II+free retinal) could be described by two concurrent first‐order processes having similar time constants. However, after bleaching more than 10% of the rod pigment, changes in sensitivity and absorbance did not follow parallel time courses. 6. Metarhodopsin III cannot be solely responsible for setting the axolotl rod sensitivity since rod thresholds decrease monotonically during dark‐adaptation whereas meta III concentration reaches a peak 3 min after the bleach and decreases thereafter.

Abstract:The negative environmental effect of petrochemical plastics prompts a shift in commercial interest towards bioplastics. Bioplastics produced from wastes and residues, when compared to primary biomass, reduces costs and emissions. However, these wastes are fed in alternative applications, resisting their use for bioplastics. The transition of wastes from current practices to bioplastics calls for a sustainability assessment, which is a combined examination of the economic, environmental and technical aspects. Material flow analysis (MFA), quantifying the flows of materials within a given system, is often used for waste management. However, MFA, not capturing additional waste characteristics, falls short in evaluating sustainable waste diversion. Therefore, this study suggests a Multi-stage MFA technique, integrating Multi criteria analysis (MCA) with MFA, to link additional information to the material flows, enabling sustainability assessment of waste to bioplastics conversion. To demonstrate the proposed methodology, this paper combines MFA with two particular MCA techniques, Analytic Hierarchy Process and Vector Space Theory, to analyse a UK case study of cellulose nanofibril (CNF) production. The findings indicate that, 11.6 Mt of the 18.04 dry Mt lignocellulosic wastes are sustainable for producing CNF films. However, this amount can change if the criteria or their relative importance in sustainability evaluation changes. The proposed approach is a generic tool for analysing sustainability of wastes to bioplastics conversion under a given geographic region to underpin circular economy.

Abstract:Recovering value from carbon fibre reinforced polymers waste can help to address the high cost and environmental burden of producing carbon fibres, but there is limited understanding of the cost and environmental implications of potential recycling technologies. The objective of this study is to assess the environmental and financial viability of mechanical recycling of carbon fibre composite waste. Life cycle costing and environmental assessment models are developed to quantify the financial and environmental impacts of alternative composite waste treatment routes, comparing landfilling, incineration with energy recovery, and mechanical recycling in a UK context. Current Landfill Tax results in incineration becoming the lowest cost composite waste treatment option; however, incineration is associated with high greenhouse gas emissions as carbon released from composite waste during combustion exceeds CO2 emissions savings from displacing UK electricity and/or heat generation, resulting in a net greenhouse gas emissions source. Mechanical recycling and fibre reuse to displace virgin glass fibre can provide the greatest greenhouse gas emissions reductions of the treatment routes considered (−378 kg CO2 eq./t composite waste), provided residual recyclates are landfilled rather than incinerated. However, this pathway is found to be unfeasible due to its high cost, which exceeds £2500/t composite waste ($3750/t composite waste). The financial performance of mechanical recycling is impaired by the high costs of dismantling and recycling processes; low carbon fibre recovery rate; and low value of likely markets. To be viable, carbon fibre recycling processes must achieve near-100% fibre recover rates and minimise the degradation of fibre mechanical properties to enable higher value applications (e.g., virgin carbon fibre displacement). On-going development of carbon fibre recovery technologies and composite manufacturing techniques using recycled carbon fibres leading to improved material properties is therefore critical to ensuring financial viability and environmental benefit of carbon fibre reinforced polymer recycling.

Some adjusted marked empirical processes for model checking with missing binary data

Abstract:To test the adequacy of a parametric model for the conditional expectation of a binary response variable given an explanatory variable, Kolmogorov–Smirnov and Cramér-von Mises statistics, which are based on a marked empirical process introduced by Stute can be used. Dikta, Kvesic, and Schmidt proposed a model-based resampling scheme for the bootstrap and approximated the critical values of tests formed using these statistics. However, their approach is inapplicable when the binary response variable is not always observed. Some missingness adjusted marked empirical processes are proposed under the framework that the missing binary responses are missing at random. We employ Dikta and Winkler’s modified model-based resampling scheme for the bootstrap in this set up and prove its asymptotic validity. Numerical comparison studies between the competing adjustments lead to interesting conclusions.

Abstract:The world is witnessing an unprecedented generation and accumulation of fiber-plastic wastes resulting in various challenges due to inconsistency, waste-stream heterogeneity, conveying issues, self-heating, and difficulty in pelletization. This study presents a novel pilot-scale system that integrates torrefaction and extrusion to convert mix fiber-plastic waste into fuel pellets. The produced pellets have low cost, high heating value, better uniformity, and low environmental impact. They can be used as solid fuels or as feedstock for pyrolysis and gasification. To evaluate the pellet cost and its environmental impact, we performed Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The TEA integrates research findings from the torrefaction-extrusion project with the techno-economic models and estimates the costs, energy consumption, and mass balances for pelletizing and torrefaction. The analysis indicates that the baseline cost of producing uniform pellets is about $55.28/dry tonne (2020$). LCA results indicate that the torrefied product has cradle-to-gate embodied greenhouse gas emissions that are net negative, although they are higher than a comparable forest-derived woodchip product. Fossil energy demand for the torrefied product is lower than the forest-derived chip, indicating the torrefied product has strong potential for use as an environmentally beneficial feedstock for future processing.

Abstract:There are forecasts for the exponential increase in the generation of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite wastes containing valuable carbon and glass fibres. The recent adoption of these composites in wind turbines and aeroplanes has increased the amount of end-of-life waste from these applications. By adequately closing the life cycle loop, these enormous volumes of waste can partly satisfy the global demand for their virgin counterparts. Therefore, there is a need to properly dispose these composite wastes, with material recovery being the final target, thanks to the strict EU regulations for promoting recycling and reusing as the highest priorities in waste disposal options. In addition, the hefty taxation has almost brought about an end to landfills. These government regulations towards properly recycling these composite wastes have changed the industries’ attitudes toward sustainable disposal approaches, and life cycle assessment (LCA) plays a vital role in this transition phase. This LCA study uses climate change results and fossil fuel consumptions to study the environmental impacts of a thermal recycling route to recycle and remanufacture CFRP and GFRP wastes into recycled rCFRP and rGFRP composites. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis was performed comparing with the traditional waste management options such as landfill, incineration with energy recovery and feedstock for cement kiln. Overall, the LCA results were favourable for CFRP wastes to be recycled using the thermal recycling route with lower environmental impacts. However, this contradicts GFRP wastes in which using them as feedstock in cement kiln production displayed more reduced environmental impacts than those thermally recycled to substitute virgin composite production.

Abstract:The high growth usage of carbon and glass fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP and GFRP) composites has led to production of a substantial amount of FRP waste. Currently, landfilling and incineration are common waste treatment methods for FRP composites which may result in environmental issues and exploitation of raw materials. During the last decades, various recycling methods have been developed to provide more sustainable solutions for FRP waste management. This research evaluates the environmental and financial viability of ten different CFRP and GFRP waste treatment methods via life cycle analysis (LCA), cost benefit analysis (CBA) and the technology readiness level (TRL) assessment. The results from CBA analysis show that solvolysis provides the highest profit amongst FRP recycling treatment methods while its performance can vary when different chemical solutions are used. Two of thermal recycling methods such as pyrolysis and pyrolysis plus oxidation also show high return for investment. LCA is carried out based on cumulative energy demand (CED) and global warming potential impact (GWP) of each treatment methods. Results indicate that thermal recycling methods require low energy input to achieve reasonable economic benefit, while there is a large electricity demand required by electrochemical method for obtaining similar profit as thermal recycling. Global warming potential impact analysis shows that solvolysis and electrochemical methods can lead to reduction of greenhouse gases during life cycle of FRP. The outcomes of this research provide valuable guidelines for waste treatment selection and market outlook of CFRP and GFRP recycling techniques.

Abstract:Increasing the recycling rates for post-consumer flexible plastics (PCFP) waste is imperative as PCFP is considered a difficult-to-recycle waste with only 17 % of PCFP effectively recycled in Europe. To tackle this pressing issue, improved mechanical recycling processes are being explored to increase the recycling rates of PCFP. One interesting option is the so-called quality recycling process (QRP) proposed by CEFLEX, which supplements more conventional mechanical recycling of PCFP with additional sorting, hot washing, improved extrusion, and deodorization. Material flow analysis (MFA) model is applied to assess the performance of QRP. Four performance indicators related to quantity (process yield and net recovery) and quality (polymer grade and transparency grade) are applied to measure the performance of three PCFP mechanical recycling scenarios. The results are compared against the conventional recycling of PCFP, showing that QRP has a similar process yield (64 % – 66 %) as conventional recycling (66 %). The net recovery indicator shows that in QRP higher recovery rates are achieved for transparent-monolayer PCFP (>90 %) compared to colored-multilayer PCFP (51 % – 91 %). The quality indicators (polymer and transparency grades) demonstrate that the regranulates from QRP have better quality compared to the conventional recycling. To validate the modeling approach, the modeled compositional data is compared with experimental compositional analyses of flakes and regranulates produced by pilot recycling lines. Main conclusions are: (i) although yields do not increase significantly, extra sorting and recycling produces better regranulates’ quality (ii) performing a modular MFA gives insights into future recycling scenarios and helps in decision making.

Use of MRF residue as alternative fuel in cement production

Abstract:Single-stream recycling has helped divert millions of metric tons of waste from landfills in the U.S., where recycling rates for municipal solid waste are currently over 30%. However, material recovery facilities (MRFs) that sort the municipal recycled streams do not recover 100% of the incoming material. Consequently, they landfill between 5% and 15% of total processed material as residue. This residue is primarily composed of high-energy-content non-recycled plastics and fiber. One possible end-of-life solution for these energy-dense materials is to process the residue into Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) that can be used as an alternative energy resource capable of replacing or supplementing fuel resources such as coal, natural gas, petroleum coke, or biomass in many industrial and power production processes. This report addresses the energetic and environmental benefits and trade-offs of converting non-recycled post-consumer plastics and fiber derived from MRF residue streams into SRF for use in a cement kiln. An experimental test burn of 118 Mg of SRF in the precalciner portion of the cement kiln was conducted. The SRF was a blend of 60% MRF residue and 40% post-industrial waste products producing an estimated 60% plastic and 40% fibrous material mixture. The SRF was fed into the kiln at 0.9 Mg/h for 24h and then 1.8 Mg/h for the following 48 h. The emissions data recorded in the experimental test burn were used to perform the life-cycle analysis portion of this study. The analysis included the following steps: transportation, landfill, processing and fuel combustion at the cement kiln. The energy use and emissions at each step is tracked for the two cases: (1) The Reference Case, where MRF residue is disposed of in a landfill and the cement kiln uses coal as its fuel source, and (2) The SRF Case, in which MRF residue is processed into SRF and used to offset some portion of coal use at the cement kiln. The experimental test burn and accompanying analysis indicate that using MRF residue to produce SRF for use in cement kilns is likely an advantageous alternative to disposal of the residue in landfills. The use of SRF can offset fossil fuel use, reduce CO2 emissions, and divert energy-dense materials away from landfills. For this test-case, the use of SRF offset between 7700 and 8700 Mg of coal use, reduced CO2 emissions by at least 1.4%, and diverted over 7950 Mg of energy-dense materials away from landfills. In addition, emissions were reduced by at least 19% for SO2, while NOX emissions increased by between 16% and 24%. Changes in emissions of particulate matter, mercury, hydrogen chloride, and total-hydrocarbons were all less than plus or minus 2.2%, however these emissions were not measured at the cement kiln. Co-location of MRFs, SRF production facilities, and landfills can increase the benefits of SRF use even further by reducing transportation requirements.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste (MSW) is treated mainly via landfill and incineration in most countries. As the effectiveness of source-point waste classification always cannot be guaranteed especially in developing countries, the introduction of mechanical-biological treatment (MBT) systems is a possible solution, for MBT can separate the biodegradable fraction and recover recyclables from mixed waste streams. Using life cycle assessment, scenario analysis and other methods, the energy, environmental and economic performance of MBT and other mainstream MSW treatment technologies are analyzed and compared. The results showed that raw MSW landfill was the worst management option. Incineration had higher energy efficiency (20.5% energy recovery), but the large amounts of chemicals consumption for fly ash and exhaust treatment were also issues leading to relatively higher life cycle environmental impacts. MBT had the highest energy efficiency when connected with biogas purification systems (38.5% energy recovery), and could significantly avoid pollution than the other two technologies. Moreover, MBT was well-adapted to changing MSW composition, making it a promising supplementary to MSW source separation. However, MBT had weak economic performance and required an economic support policy. Our findings show that product revenue needs to be increased, and infrastructure sharing between MSW treatment facilities should also be encouraged.
Flows of plastic, energy, and carbon in a mechanical treatment plant for refuse-derived fuel production from landfill-mined waste

Abstract:Refuse-derived fuel (RDF) derived from landfill-mined waste (LMW) has attracted considerable interest among Thai entrepreneurs and energy-intensive industries in the past decade. LMW typically undergoes subsequent mechanical treatment (MT) to segregate valuable combustibles, thereby facilitating the production of RDF with high energy content. While RDF production from LMW via MT promotes material- and energy-recovery, it raises concerns about its economic feasibility, potential environmental contamination, dust and particulate emissions, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from fuel and electricity consumption, and social impacts. To gain better insight into this process, this study investigated the mass flow of inputs (LMW) and outputs (RDF, rejected RDF, rejected soil-like materials, recyclable materials, and non-recyclable materials) from RDF production lines of an MT plant in Thailand. All samples were weighed and analysed for their plastic, energy, and carbon content. The LMW, as received, has an average moisture content of 39.8%. The RDF production rate from this plant was 23.3 tonnes/hour, which is equivalent to 34.5% of the total LMW fed into the plant. Of the total LMW input, the byproducts included 11.9% rejected RDF, 52.3% rejected soil-like materials, 0.7% recyclable materials, and 0.6% non-recyclable materials. On average, the final RDF comprised mostly plastic (66–78%) and textile (10–18%). The estimated net calorific value of RDF ranged from 26.38 to 28.93 MJ/kg. In an hour, the MT process can recover 50% of the plastic waste (9.32 tonnes/hour), 49.9% of the energy in the form of RDF (353,734 MJ/h), and 39% of the carbon content (8.49 tonnes/hour) from the LMW inputs. Approximately 33% of plastic waste, 31% of energy, and 45% of carbon from the LMW inputs were found in the resulting rejected soil-like materials. The MT process could be optimised to reduce this leakage further. The total output energy, approximately 353,734 MJ/h, accounted for 50% of the total energy supplied to the MT processes. The findings are valuable for developing strategies to maximise waste recovery, minimise energy loss, increase profits, and reduce environmental impacts.

Abstract:The economic and environmental impacts of the reverse logistics (RL) process (including drop-off, collection and transportation [C&T]) of the waste disposal chain are becoming increasingly prominent with the increasing generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) and promotion of MSW classification. Quantitative evaluation of this process from economic and environmental perspectives is of great significance for MSW management. This study focused on the financial capital, materials, and energy consumption in the RL process in Xi an City, China. Based on field investigation, the magnitude of pollutant emissions from MSW C&T vehicles over their life cycle was predicted using the GREET software and total RL life-cycle cost and life-cycle assessment were analyzed. The results showed that the finical costs of RL were 49.03 per ton of food waste and 88.84 per ton of residual waste ; the environmental impacts caused by the RL process accounted for 79.24%–96.00% and 20.87%–68.55% of the entire food waste and residual waste management chains, respectively. Labor costs were the biggest financial expenditure and the fuel cycle of C&T vehicles caused the majority of the environmental impacts. Source-separated waste management scenarios represented more environmental benefits but poorer economic positions. In the future, improving MSW source-separation accuracy, replacing diesel C&T vehicles with electric ones, and optimizing the RL system could reduce the environmental and economic impacts of the entire waste management system.

Abstract:Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites have permeated every aspect of modern life. Significant progress has been made in engineering communities to recycle composite wastes. While emerging recycling techniques can recover both fibers and resins at mild processing conditions, they are currently limited on the laboratory scale. It remains unclear if they could lead to market viability and environmental sustainability when they are used for industrial applications; if not, what the limiting factors are and how to improve them. In this study, the environmental and economic impacts of existing recycling techniques are studied. The average recycling costs are analyzed, and the environmental impacts are examined. It reveals that while the emerging techniques can recycle composites with extremely low environmental impact, their costs are significant compared to conventional techniques, primarily due to the expensive solvents and catalysts used to enable recycling. However, the study shows that it is possible to combine conventional waste processing techniques with emerging ones to enable recycling scenarios that are both cost-effective and environmentally beneficial. Overall, the study in this paper provides valuable insights for the design of future waste management supply chains and appropriate business models for the sustainable development of society.

Metal recovery from high-grade WEEE: a life cycle assessment

Abstract:Based on available data in the literature the recovery of aluminium, copper, gold, iron, nickel, palladium and silver from high-grade WEEE was modeled by LCA. The pre-treatment of WEEE included manual sorting, shredding, magnetic sorting, Eddy-current sorting, air classification and optical sorting. The modeled metallurgical treatment facility included a Kaldo plant, a converter aisle, an anode refinery and a precious metal refinery. The metallurgic treatment showed significant environmental savings when credited the environmental load from avoided production of the same amount of metals by mining and refining of ore. The resource recovery per tonne of high-grade WEEE ranged from 2g of palladium to 386kg of iron. Quantified in terms of person-equivalents the recovery of palladium, gold, silver, nickel and copper constituted the major environmental benefit of the recovery of metals from WEEE. These benefits are most likely underestimated in the model, since we did not find adequate data to include all the burdens from mining and refining of ore; burdens that are avoided when metals are recovered from WEEE. The processes connected to the pre-treatment of WEEE were found to have little environmental effect compared to the metallurgical treatment. However only 12-26% of silver, gold and palladium are recovered during pre-treatment, which suggest that the reduction of the apparent losses of precious metals as palladium, gold and silver during pre-treatment of WEEE is of environmental importance. Our results support in a quantitative manner that metal recovery from WEEE should be quantified with respect to the individual metals recovered and not as a bulk metal recovery rate.
