Abstract:Microplastics from mulch films can be a source of chemical contamination to agricultural soils. In this context, biodegradable films have been widely positioned as a greener choice. However, their sorption/desorption capabilities, in contrast to the conventional plastic types remain understudied. It is for this reason that objective evaluation of their interactions with residual agricultural contaminants becomes important. Our findings reveal that polyethylene (PE) mulch films retained lower amounts of pesticide residues and demonstrated a higher desorption/release [median desorption = 71.86 μg/L or about 50%], while polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) mulch films retained higher amounts of pesticide residues onto their surface and demonstrated a much lower desorption [median desorption = 24.27 μg/L or about 17%] after a spraying event. A higher ambient temperature had no significant effect on final desorption amounts in both PE [median = 65.27 μg/L at 20 °C and 74.23 μg/L at 40 °C] and PBAT [median = 24.26 μg/L at 20 °C and 24.78 μg/L at 40 °C] mulch films. However, it did favour a faster desorption pace in PE films. Desorption in PBAT and PE plastic types was correlated with the log K ow value [Spearman's correlation: 0.857 and 0.837 respectively, p < 0.05]. However, only a moderate correlation with pKa was observed in PBAT [Spearman's correlation: 0.478, p < 0.05], while none for PE plastic type. Sorption of pesticides onto biodegradable PBAT microplastics were best explained by Elovich [R 2 : 0.937–0.959] and pseudo-second order kinetics [R 2 : 0.942–0.987], suggesting the presence of chemisorption. Furthermore, Weber Morris plots suggested the presence of a multi-step process and Boyd plots indicated that film diffusion or chemical bond formation was the rate-limiting step governing this phenomenon.

Abstract:Microplastics have attracted extensive attention regarding their role in the cycling of organic pollutants in aquatic environments. However, the influence of microplastics on the sorption of organic pollutants in soil is unclear. Herein, we investigated the sorption of polar diazepam and nonpolar phenanthrene to two soils (Inceptisol and Oxisol). Batch sorption experiments were used to evaluate the effect of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) microplastics at addition rates of 0.1%, 1%, and 10% (w/w). The addition of microplastics significantly decreased the overall sorption of diazepam at 10%, and increased the sorption of phenanthrene at 1%, while the effects were negligible at other addition rates. Decreased sorption of diazepam was attributed to its lower sorption affinity to microplastics than to soil. Microplastics, even at 0.1%, substantially decreased the relative distribution of phenanthrene in soil, particularly for PE in the Oxisol with lower foc. The sorption affinity of phenanthrene followed the order PE > soil organic carbon (SOC) > PP > PS, suggesting that PE can be a significant sink of phenanthrene in contaminated soils. Overall, microplastics can change the sorption of diazepam and phenanthrene to soil and therefore affect their mobility and environmental risk in soil ecosystems.

Abstract:Microplastics could act as a carrier for pesticides in the water environment and pose a potential risk. This study mainly investigated the effects of reaction time, microplastics dosages, pH, and NaCl salinity on the adsorption characteristics of three pesticides (Imidacloprid, Buprofezin, Difenoconazole) on polyethylene (PE) microplastics in aqueous solution. The results showed that high pH and low NaCl salinity were conducive to the adsorption. The adsorption data were well fitted by the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-first-order kinetics, indicating that it was mainly controlled by physical function. The adsorption capacity of three pesticides on PE microplastics followed the order of Difenoconazole > Buprofezin > Imidacloprid. The thermodynamic study indicated the adsorption of all pesticides as spontaneous and exothermic processes, and the elevated temperature was favorable to the adsorption. SEM-EDS and FTIR results verified that pesticides were adsorbed on the microplastics but the adsorption process was mainly controlled by intermolecular Van Der Waals Force and the microporous filling mechanism. Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation results indicated that surface adsorption was the exclusive mechanism for the adsorption of pesticides on microplastics, and the final adsorption configurations revealed that there were complex interactions between the pesticide molecules and the C, H atoms in PE molecules. The results of this study illustrated that PE microplastics are potential carriers for pesticides in the water environment.

Abstract:Microplastic pollution has attracted mounting concerns worldwide. Microplastics may concentrate organic and metallic contaminants; thus, affecting their transport, fate and organismal exposure. To better understand organic contaminant-microplastic interactions, our study explored the sorption of selected polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), α-hexabromocyclododecane (α-HBCDD), and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) on high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyvinylchloride (PVC) microplastics under saline conditions. Sorption isotherms determined varied between chemicals and between HDPE and PVC microplastics. Log Freundlich sorption coefficients (Log KF) for the targeted chemicals ranged from 2.01 to 5.27 L kg-1 for HDPE, but were significantly lower for PVC, i.e., ranging from Log KF data (2.84 - 8.58 L kg-1). Significant correlations between chemicals' Log KF and Log Kow (octanol-water partition coefficient) indicate that chemical-dependent sorption was largely influenced by their hydrophobicity. Sorption was evaluated using three size classes (< 53, 53 - 300, and 300 - 1000 µm) of lab-fragmented microplastics. Particle size did not significantly affect sorption isotherms, but influenced the time to reach equilibrium and the predicted maximum sorption, likely related to microplastic surface areas. The presence of biofilms on HDPE particles significantly enhanced contaminant sorption capacity, indicating more complex sorption dynamics in the chemical-biofilm-microplastic system. Our findings offer new insights into the chemical-microplastic interactions in marine environment.

Abstract:Microplastics and sulfamethoxazole coexist ubiquitously in the marine environment, and microplastics tend to sorb organic pollutants from the surrounding environment. Here, the sorption kinetics and isotherms of sulfamethoxazole on polyethylene (PE) microplastics closely fitted a pseudo-second-order model (R-2 = 0.98) and linear model (R-2 = 0.99), respectively, indicating that the sorption process was partition-dominant interaction. The main binding mechanism was possibly the van der Waals interaction for hydrophilic sulfamethoxazole onto hydrophobic PE microplastics. The effects of pH, dissolved organic matter and salinity on sorption behavior were also studied. The sorption behavior of sulfamethoxazole on PE microplastics was not significantly influenced by pH and salinity, probably because the electrostatic repulsion played a minor role. In addition, the negligible effect of dissolved organic matter was attributed to the greater affinity of sulfamethoxazole to PE microplastics than to dissolved organic matter. Our results demonstrated that PE microplastics may serve as a carrier for sulfamethoxazole in the aquatic environment.

Abstract:Plastic pollution in the soil ecosystem is currently receiving worldwide attention. However, little is known whether the presence of microplastics (MPs) in soil will affect the environmental behavior of pesticide residues in soil. Here, the effect of the addition of new mulch MPs (New-MPs), aged mulch MPs (Aged-MPs) and biodegradable mulch MPs (BioD-MPs) on the adsorption and degradation behaviors of two pesticides (imidacloprid and flumioxazin) in soil was investigated. Three MPs slowed down rapid adsorption stage of pesticides in soil and delayed the time to reach adsorption equilibrium. Adsorption rates: Soil > Soil + New-MPs > Soil + Aged-MPs > Soil + BioD-MPs. Three MPs enhanced the adsorption strength of the soil system for the two pesticides, and the aging treatment of the MPs enhanced this effect. Three MPs affected the degradation process of the two pesticides. New-MPs promoted the degradation of two pesticides imidacloprid and flumioxazin, and the degradation half-lives were shortened to 0.93 and 0.85 times, respectively; while Aged-Mps and BioD-MPs delayed the degradation process of two pesticides, and the degradation half-lives were extended to 1.64 times and 1.21 times, respectively. The effect was more significant with the increase of MPs and pesticides concentration. Pesticide polarity, surface structure and functional groups of MPs are potentially important reasons for the differences in adsorption and degradation of MPs-soil systems. Our findings provide a deep insight into understanding the mechanism of interaction between MPs and pesticide residues in soil environment.

Influence of Micro- and Nano-Plastics on Phenanthrene Adsorption at the Root Water Interface

Abstract:The adsorption of organic pollutants onto plant root surfaces is an initial crucial stage in the transfer of these pollutants from aqueous or soil solutions to plant systems. This study explored the potential influence of microand nano-plastics (MNPs) (0.1-100 mu m) on the process of phenanthrene (Phe) adsorption at the root-water interface. The findings indicate that MNPs can exhibit either promotional or inhibitory effects on the root adsorption of organic pollutants, depending on both their particle size and content. Specifically, both the sorption capability of MNPs for Phe and their tendency to accumulate on or within root tissues increase with decreasing particle size. These dual effects facilitate the accumulation of nanoscale MNPs (0.1-6 mu m in this work) within roots, which function as efficient carriers for Phe and increase Phe accumulation in root tissues. In contrast, MNPs with larger particle sizes (1-100 mu m in this work) exhibit reduced affinity for roots and are more prone to remain in solution, thereby exerting more pronounced competitive inhibition against the adsorption of Phe by roots. However, when the concentration of nano-plastics in the root-water system exceeded the retention capacity of the roots, the excess nano-plastics could compete with the roots for Phe, potentially reducing overall Phe sorption by the roots. These conditional effects of MNPs as either competitors or facilitators (vectors) in the root adsorption processes of organic pollutants may account for the different roles observed in previous studies where MNPs exhibited varying effects on the plant accumulation of organic pollutants.
Agricultural film-derived microplastics elevate the potential risk of pesticides in soil ecosystem: The inhibited leaching by altering soil pore

Abstract:The residue of mulch film is a crucial source of microplastics (MPs) in agricultural fields. The effects of mulch film-derived MPs on the environmental behavior of pesticides in agriculture remain unclear. In the present study, the effects of MPs of different sizes (5 mm, 1 mm, 30 µm, and 0.3 µm) at environmentally relevant concentrations on pesticide transport were evaluated, and the mechanism was explored with respect to adsorption and pore structure using fluorescence visualization, the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek model, and microcomputed tomography. MPs were found to be retained in the soil due to size limitation, pore capture, and surface adhesion. The presence of mm-sized MPs (5 and 1 mm) at a concentration of 0.25 % inhibited the leaching behavior of atrazine, metolachlor, and tebuconazole. MPs did not significantly alter the pesticide adsorption ability of the soil. The reduced leaching originated from the impact of MPs on soil pore structure. Specifically, the porosity increased by 16.2-25.0 %, and the connectivity decreased by 34.5 %. These results demonstrate that mm-sized MPs inhibit pesticide leaching by obstructing the pores and altering the transport pathways, thereby potentially elevating environmental risks, particularly to the soil ecosystem.
Adsorption of 2-hydroxynaphthalene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, and pyrene by polyvinyl chloride microplastics in water and their bioaccessibility under in vitro human gastrointestinal system

Abstract:The interaction of microplastics (MPs) and organic pollutants has recently become a focus of investigation. To understand how microplastic residues affect the migration of organic pollutants, it is necessary to examine the adsorption and desorption behavior of organic pollutants on MPs. In this study, integrated adsorption/desorption experiments and theoretical calculations were used to clarify the adsorption mechanism of 2-hydroxynaphthalene (2-OHN), naphthalene (NAP), phenanthrene (PHE), and pyrene (PYR) by polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC-MPs). Based on the phenomenological mathematical models, the rate-limiting step for analyte adsorption onto PVC-MPs was adsorption onto active sites (R 2 = 0.865–0.995). Except for PHE, analyte adsorption isotherms were well described by the Freundlich model (R 2 = 0.992–0.998), and adsorption thermodynamics showed that analyte adsorption on PVC-MPs was a spontaneous exothermic process (Δ H 0 < 0; Δ G 0 < 0). Based on the order of adsorption efficiency of 2-OHN < NAP < PHE < PYR, which is identical to the competitive adsorption experiment, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) adsorption on PVC-MPs increased as the aromatic ring number increased and the hydroxyl content decreased. The release of 2-OHN (49 %–52 %) from PVC-MPs into the simulated gastrointestinal environment was greater than that of NAP (5.5 %–5.7 %). Theoretical calculations and adsorption tests indicated that hydrophobic interaction was the primary influence on the adsorption of PAHs and their hydroxylated derivatives by PVC-MPs. These findings improve our understanding of MPs' behavior and dangers as pollutant carriers in the aquatic environment and help us develop recommendations for the pollution control of MPs.

Abstract:Environmental risk of multi-year polythene film mulching (PM) was evaluated and investigated. The location observation following 19-year (2000–2018) PM in irrigated region indicated that the cumulative accumulation of soil microplastics was as high as 2900 ± 19.5 n kg−1. Microplastic accumulation was tightly associated with soil plasticizer concentration (Pearson’s r = 0.728, p 0.05). Critically, total concentration of PAEs decreased by 6.43% in SM relative to CK, and by 9.61% in PM+SM relative to PM respectively. High throughput sequencing indicated that the proportions of predominant bacteria and fungi were totally lower in PM than those of organic mulching, particularly Sphingomonadaceae and Stachybotryaceae. KEGG analyses indicated that organic mulching promoted the metabolisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, benzoic acid (probability>75%) and heterologous organism metabolism (p<0.001), due to improved microbial community assembly. Therefore, organic mulching efficiently accelerated microbial mineralization of PM pollutants, and may act as a green solution to displace PM.

Abstract:Plastic mulching films and phosphate fertilizers have been widely used to improve agricultural soil productivity. Microplastics (MP) and phosphorus (P) significantly accumulate in agricultural soil and water bodies. However, the effects of residual MP on P availability in soil and aqueous mediums remain unclear. In this study, available P (Olsen-P) in soils and P adsorption capacity in aqueous medium were determined to examine the influence of MP properties on P availability in laboratory. In agricultural soils, Olsen-P was significantly affected by MP types. Conventional MP (mulching film particles), such as polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and biodegradable MP, such as polylactic acid (PLA), substantially reduced soil Olsen-P by 9.7–38.6% and 38.4–73.6%, respectively. The size and concentration of MP strongly affected soil Olsen-P, with smaller (25 μm) and more concentrated (5%) MP causing greater reductions in Olsen-P. In the soil contaminated with MP, increased fulvic acid content significantly increased Olsen-P levels. Microplastics exhibited strong P adsorption capacities, leading to decreased P availability in aqueous medium. Conventional MP exhibited a higher P adsorption capacity than biodegradable MP, with P distribution coefficients ( K d values) ordered as PVC (5.19 L kg −1 ) > PE (4.23 L kg −1 ) > PLA (2.48 L kg −1 ). Notably, the K d values increased with decreasing sizes of conventional MP, whereas the opposite trend was observed for PLA. The presence of fulvic acid affected the adsorption of P by MP in aqueous medium. Increased fulvic acid content reduced P adsorption capacity of MP, thus enhancing P availability. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of P dynamics in MP-contaminated agricultural soil and aqueous medium, which could aid in formulating sustainable agricultural practices and effective environmental management strategies for plastic mulching films and P contamination.

Abstract:Microplastic formation in aqueous systems is among the inevitable consequences of plastic pollution, which has cascading environmental and health implications. As the microplastic sizes get smaller over time, their surface areas increase, which creates an implicit, dynamic, and inflating new domain, called the microplastisphere. This study summarizes and critically reviews literature on the adsorption of organic compounds (OCs), which are already in our aquatic systems, onto microplastic surfaces. This investigation reviews a database of 91 articles, 68 of which are used in an adsorption analysis for 178 OCs via 770 isotherms. The four most prevalent polymer types throughout the literature are polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Our analysis revealed that the octanol-water partitioning coefficient, Kow, can be a good surrogate for adsorption capacity for some polymer and OC types; however, the hydrophobicity of the OC alone may not necessarily indicate adsorption affinity. The water chemistry also played notable roles on the adsorption process, evidenced by the dramatic enhancement of adsorption during per- and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) adsorption onto PS in saltwater conditions. However, our work concluded that the variability within the database indicates a strong need for defined microplastics characterization and testing procedures to better represent the interactions of microplastics with the environment.

Abstract:As a new type of environmental pollutant, microplastics (MPs) can adsorb residual organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the soil and pose a severe threat to the soil ecosystems. To understand the interaction between soil MPs and OCPs, the sorption of two kinds of OCPs, including hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), on polyethylene (PE) microplastics in soil suspension was studied through sorption kinetics and isotherm models. The effects of solution/soil ratio and MPs diameter on sorption were examined. The kinetic experiment results show that the sorption equilibrium was 12 h, and the sorption process of OCPs on MPs can be well described by a pseudo-second-order model. The Freundlich model (R2 = 0.942-0.997) provides a better fit to the sorption isotherm data than the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.062-0.634), indicating that the sorption process takes place on the nonuniform surface of MPs. The MPs had a good sorption effect on OCPs when the solution/soil ratio was from 75:1 to 100:1. As the diameter of MPs increases, the sorption capacity decreases. These results provide support for further research on microplastic pollution in soil.

Abstract:In the middle of the 20th century, the production of plastics exploded worldwide because of their low cost and the versatility of their applications. However, since plastic debris is highly resistant to environmental degradation, a growing presence of plastics in all the ecosystems has been confirmed. Among them, plastic particles < 5 mm, also known as microplastics (MPs), are of special concern because they are dispersed in aerial, terrestrial and aquatic environments, being the soil the main environmental sink of these contaminants. Due to their large specific surface area and hydrophobicity, MPs are considered good adsorbents for other environmental organic pollutants also present in terrestrial ecosystems, such as pharmaceuticals, personal-care products or pesticides with which they can interact and thus modify their environmental fate. In this review article, we examine the recent literature (from 2017 to 2022) to get a better understanding of the environmental fate of pesticides in soil (adsorption, mobility and/or degradation) when they are simultaneously present with MPs and the ecological risks on living organisms of the interactions between MPs and pesticides in soil. More studies are needed to fully understand the toxicological impact of the copresence in soil of pesticides and MPs.

Abstract:Microplastics in the aquatic environment are susceptible to colonization by surrounding microorganisms, which form biofilms over the microplastic's surface. These biofilm‐laden microplastics can then interact with a diverse array of contaminants. In the present study, biofilms were grown on microplastics in a laboratory setting using Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a model biofilm‐forming bacterium for periods of 5 to 15 days. The sorption of three organic compounds representing different levels of hydrophobicity, namely methylene blue (MB), phenanthrol, and phenanthrene, was used to evaluate the effect of biofilm biomass on the adsorption of organic contaminants to microplastics. The sorption of MB and phenanthrol was found to increase with biofouling time, indicating affinity between these contaminants and the biofilm biomass on the particle. However, the presence of a biofilm did not influence the sorption of phenanthrene on the microplastics. These results suggest that the hydrophobicity of organic contaminants plays a major role in how biofouling of microplastics will influence contaminant sorption by microplastics. For some contaminants, biofilm can enhance the role of microplastics as contaminant vectors. These findings emphasize the need to understand the biomass load on environmental microplastics and the contaminants that associate with it for an accurate representation of the risk associated with microplastics in the environment. Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), an emerging pollutant in the environment and food, may adsorb other contaminants such as pesticide due to particles' properties. The adsorption behavior and their hazardous changes of four common types of MPs to thiram was investigated. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm models were fitted well using the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model respectively, indicating forces such as van der Waals forces dominate, and the maximum adsorption capacity at pH values of 6-7 also indicates that electrostatic forces play a smaller role. The adsorption thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption was a spontaneous and exothermic process. The decrease in the adsorption capacity as the concentration of MPs increases and more adsorption by aged MPs demonstrate that the adsorption process is related to the sites on the surface of MPs. Due to the influence of ionic strength, the adsorption capacity of MPs for thiram increases significantly when the adsorption process takes place in solutions with salinity or in orange and apple juices. The bioavailability of thiram adsorbed by PVC and PET increased significantly. This study highlights the strong role of MPs in food as carriers of pesticide residues in food systems and that the combined hazard should also be of concern.

Abstract:Microplastic pollution is a major global environmental problem in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. Pesticides are frequently applied to agricultural soil to reduce the effects of pests on crops, but may also affect the degradation of plastics. In this study, we generated microplastics from polyethylene (PE) film and biodegradable poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) film and determined (1) the effect of prothioconazole on degradation of the microplastics, and (2) the adsorption and release characteristics of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, As, Pb, Ba, and Sn) by the microplastics during degradation process. Changes of surface functional groups and morphologies were measured by FTIR and SEM, while metal concentrations were determined by ICPMS. Prothioconazole was found to promote plastic degradation. PBAT degraded faster and adsorbed more heavy metals from the soil than PE. Whether the microplastics adsorb or release heavy metals depended on the metal and their concentrations. Prothioconazole inhibited the adsorption of Cr, As, Pb and Ba by microplastics, promoted the adsorption of Cu, and had no significant effect for Sn. These results can help to assess the ecological risk of microplastic pollution from plastic mulch when combined with heavy metals.

Abstract:Polyethylene (PE) mulch films are an important source of microplastics (MPs) in agricultural soils , which may further affect the bioavailability of coexisting pollutants. In this study, white (WM), black (BM), and silver-black (SM) PE mulch films were aged on the soil surface and under soil burial to simulate the two exposure patterns of abandoned mulch films in the field. Results indicated that the soil-surface exposure induced more pronounced aging characteristics, and WM seemed the most susceptible. Serious surface deterioration by aging led to a drastic decrease in the tensile properties of the films, suggesting the tendency to fragment. Oxygen-containing functional groups were generated on the film surfaces, with oxygen/carbon ratios increasing by up to 29 times, which contributed to the prominent increase in Pb adsorption on the film-derived MPs. Additionally, the film surface became more hydrophobic when exposed to the soil surface but more hydrophilic in the soil-burial exposure, which was in agreement with the change in triclosan adsorption, i.e., promotion and suppression, respectively. Aging generally decreased the desorption potential of the adsorbed pollutants in simulated gastrointestinal solutions due to increased interactions. By comparison, exposure patterns were revealed to be the critical factor for these changes, regardless of film types.
