Abstract:The evolution of landslides is influenced by internal geological conditions and external trigger factors such as the precipitation and the change of groundwater level. It’s difficult to establish a precise physical model to predict the happening of landslides on account of the complex and unobtainable internal mechanisms. Meanwhile, development of advanced real-time monitoring system has challenged engineers to detect and analyze valuable features from high amount of data of the status of slopes. Multivariate data-based models have been applicable to the early warning of landslides. In the current paper, cumulative displacement was decomposed into trend components and periodic components by Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) method. Based on abundant monitoring data, the trend displacement was predicted by polynomial function, while the periodic displacement was predicted by Particle Swarm Optimization and Support Vector Machine (PSO-SVM) model. A high and steep slope along the express way in Zhejiang province, China was taken as a case study. The model proposed in the current paper has been demonstrated to be highly accurate in predicting the displacement of rainfall-induced landslides.

Abstract:Rainfall is the main inducing-factor of geological disaster in Jiangxi Province.This paper summarizes the research on geological hazards and proposes a method for the rainfall-induced landslides prediction.A system of forecasting and early-warning geological hazards were developed based on this method.The system manages enormous relative data which includes landslide data,geologic data,geomorphologic data,rainfall data and documents of geological hazards via spatial database engine.Based on WebGIS technology,the system implements and provides following functions : issue of prediction map of landslide hazards probability,information query,spatial localization and spatial overlapping,forecasted information feedback and so on.

Abstract:A warning model was set up based on the introduction of rainfall rating index method and environmental regionalization of certain areas,taking into comprehensive consideration the geological environmental factors and human engineering activities to determine the unit warning rate of different river basis.At last,with application of the warning model,a judgment on possibility of highway flood damage of Yanzhang Creek in Zhejiang Longquan was made.The results prove that the model is effective,which has simple structure,easy operation and engineering application value.

Abstract:We determined pollen specific IgE in tears and compared these results to the concentration of specific IgE in serum samples. We obtained tears (using Schirmer strips) and serum samples from subjects with Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) pollinosis, and tested for C. japonica pollen specific IgE using a quantitative ELISA. Time kinetic analyses through the pollen season showed that specific IgE levels in tears were found to increase earlier than those in sera and reached their maximum at the end of or after the pollen season, from March to early June. In the C. japonica pollen free season, July to December, the specific IgE levels in tears decreased, although the serum levels remained relatively high. These results indicate that the quantitative assay for specific IgE in tears might be useful to identify specific eye allergens.

Abstract:In recent years, the impacts of climate change have significantly heightened the susceptibility of the Xizang Autonomous Region in China to various geological hazards. These hazards pose significant long-term implications for the development and maintenance of critical line projects in the vicinity. Consequently, the implementation of an effective quantitative assessment method for geological hazards becomes paramount for disaster prevention and mitigation. This study introduces a novel method integrating remote sensing, drone-based oblique photogrammetry, and onsite field investigation for effectively identifying geological hazards, and presents a risk quantification technique tailored for high mountain regions under varied rainfall possibilities. By utilizing this innovative approach, a comprehensive investigation was conducted to assess the characteristics and impacts of rainfall-induced debris flow in the Cuojiu Valley, southeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China, under varying rainfall probabilities. The study examines the effects of these debris flow on the regional line project, based on the maximum accumulated thickness and the highest affected height triggered by rainfall. The analysis revealed that severe rainfall events act as triggers for these hazardous occurrences. Importantly, the study highlights that the safety of critical line projects in the region is compromised by the identified debris flow risk in the Cuojiu Valley during extreme rainfall events. This study’s novelty lies in identifying the distribution of geological hazard sources through the proposed method and conducting a quantitative assessment of multi-scenario high-elevation and long-runout debris flows in the Cuojiu Valley. This provides valuable insights for preventing geological hazards in high-elevation valleys.

Abstract:Important characteristics of long-distance pipelines in China are that they generally cover large areas and are subjected to variety of geological hazards, such as fault movement, landslide, flood, and surface subsidence. In concern of the possibility and high risk of geological hazard and according to the pipeline integrity management requirements, the authors focus on an important technical means which on the basis of the monitoring data to the change of the stress and strain of pipe body to establish an earlier monitoring warning system of geological hazards. This system can find the precursor of disaster accurately with a small amount of monitoring costs and improve the relevance of disaster prevention and reduce the cost of comprehensive management of pipeline. Based on this method, a project was conducted to prove reliability and necessity of this premonitoring network.

Abstract:Abstract History of earthquake’s damages have illustrated the high vulnerability and risks associated with failure of water transfer and distribution systems. Adequate mitigation plans to reduce such seismic risks are required for sustainable development. The first step in developing a mitigation plan is prioritizing the limited available budget to address the most critical mitigation measures. This paper presents an optimization model that can be utilized for financial resource allocation towards earthquake risk mitigation measures for water pipelines. It presents a framework that can be used by decision-makers (authorities, stockholders, owners and contractors) to structure budget allocation strategy for seismic risk mitigation measures such as repair, retrofit, and/or replacement of steel and concrete pipelines. A stochastic model is presented to establish optimal mitigation measures based on minimizing repair and retrofit costs, post-earthquake replacement costs, and especially earthquake-induced large losses. To consider the earthquake induced loss on pipelines, the indirect loss due to water shortage and business interruption in the industries which needs water is also considered. The model is applied to a pilot area to demonstrate the practical application aspects of the proposed model. Pipeline exposure database, built environment occupancy type, pipeline vulnerability functions, and regional seismic hazard characteristics are used to calculate a probabilistic seismic risk for the pilot area. The Global Earthquake Model’s (GEM) OpenQuake software is used to run various seismic risk analysis. Event-based seismic hazard and risk analyses are used to develop the hazard curves and maps in terms of peak ground velocity (PGV) for the study area. The results of this study show the variation of seismic losses and mitigation costs for pipelines located within the study area based on their location and the types of repair. Performing seismic risk analysis analyses using the proposed model provides a valuable tool for determining the risk associated with a network of pipelines in a region, and the costs of repair based on acceptable risk level. It can be used for decision making and to establish type and budgets for most critical repairs for a specific region.

Abstract:Real-time monitoring and intelligent early warning system are crucial and significant to take mitigation measures and reduce casualties and property losses related to landslides. It is difficult to obtain entire monitoring data in the accelerated deformation phase in a landslide event, and hard to issue early warning information using a traditional monitoring approach with fixed and low sampling frequency. Displacement increments of loess landslides induced by agriculture irrigation on the Heifangtai terrace could be sudden and extremely rapid. Typical landslide types include loess flowslides and loess falls. It is of practical significance to develop a self-adaptive data acquisition monitoring technique and establish a real-time landslide early warning system (LEWS) to meet the needs for risk mitigation of rapid sliding slopes on the Heifangtai terrace. The monitoring technique can wirelessly transmit displacement data and the LEWS was devised using the new artificial intelligence. The LEWS could automatically release the warning information in advance of the event once the early warning parameters exceed default thresholds. In this study, the early warning procedures, real-time monitoring approach, intelligent LEWS, a multiple criteria warning model, warning release and emergency mitigation measures, and performance are introduced in detail. Six loess landslides at Heifangtai and eight landslides in other regions of China have been successfully warned since its implementation in 2012. This study proposed an effective and practical solution for the early warning of loess landslides at Heifangtai. Two typical loess landslides that had successful early warnings at Heifangtai were presented. The successful implementation could serve as a reference for global rapid slope failure cases, considering the complex nature of landslide behaviors and failure mechanisms.

With emphasis on the uncertainties of earthquake level, ground condition, soil-pipe interaction and capacity to resist pipe deformation in longitudinal direction, the check point method is applied to the reliability study of water pipeline, and a case study is presented to show the implementation of the proposed model.

Abstract:Water inrush is one of the most frequent and harmful geological disasters in tunnel construction. In order to effectively prevent and control the occurrence of water inrush, an early warning method based on fine risk evaluation and hierarchical advanced forecast is proposed. Water inrush is a complex dynamic coupling factors system, the relationship between influencing factors and water inrush is strongly nonlinear. Therefore, the efficacy coefficient model, which has the advantages of standardization, conciseness, and freedom from subjective factors, is improved nonlinearly. The fine risk evaluation theory and method based on the improved efficacy coefficient model consisted of two parts: one is static evaluation used in design stage, and the other is dynamic evaluation applied in the construction stage. The index weights are determined scientifically and reasonably by Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the entropy method. According to the fine risk evaluation results, combined with the advantages and disadvantages of various forecasting methods, a multistep hierarchical detection method of disaster resources for water inrush is proposed to identify the occurrence characteristics and failure level of disaster sources. The theory has been successfully applied to the #3 inclined well of Yuelongmen Tunnel in Cheng-Lan Railway. The evaluation results had good agreement with the actual excavation data, which indicates that the model is of high credibility and feasibility. The method could improve the prediction accuracy of water inrush and explore geometric characteristics and filling of disaster-causing structures. It is of great significance for avoiding water inrush and guiding the rapid and safe tunnel construction.

Abstract:Rainwater runoff that does not infiltrate the soil during heavy rainfall may increase slope instability. The effect of runoff is usually neglected in conventional rainfall-induced slope failure analysis to simplify the model. To analyze the effect of runoff on slope stability, this study simultaneously simulated the effects of surface runoff and rainfall infiltration on bank slopes in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area. A shallow slope failure method that can be used to analyze runoff was proposed based on the modified Green-Ampt model, the simplified Saint-Venant model, and the infinite slope model. In this model, the modified Green–Ampt model was used to estimate the rainfall infiltration capacity and the wetting front depth. The eight-flow (D8) method and the simplified Saint-Venant model were selected to estimate the distribution of runoff. By considering the wetting front depth as the slip surface depth, the factor of safety of the slope could be determined using the infinite slope stability model. A comparison of the different models reveals that runoff can escalate the instability of certain slopes, causing stable slopes to become unstable. Comparison of the unstable areas obtained from the simulation with the actual landslide sites shows that the model proposed in this study can successfully predict landslides at these sites. The slope instability assessment model proposed in this study offers an alternative approach for estimating high-risk areas in large mountainous regions.

Abstract:The warning accuracy, false alarm rate and timeliness of regional geological hazard early warning models (GHEWMs) have an important impact on significantly reducing the damage caused by geological hazards. Most of the existing regional GHEWMs are based on forecast rainfall. Due to the influence of rainfall forecast accuracy and other factors, its early warning accuracy, false alarm rate and timeliness are still difficult to meet the needs of engineering applications such as disaster avoidance, mitigation and prevention of geological hazards. Therefore, this paper proposes a regional GHEWM based on the hourly rainfall series (HRS) of real-time automatic rainfall stations. Based on the data of 689 geological hazards that have occurred in Huangshan City from 2018 to 2021 and the corresponding rainfall data of automatic rainfall stations, the model uses the dynamic time warping (DTW) algorithm on the Spark big data platform to extract the historical HRS of each geological hazard and calculates the highest similarity between it and the current HRS in parallel. By coupling the probability of occurrence of geological hazards and the highest similarity of the above-mentioned HRS, a regional GHEWM based on real-time rainfall big data is finally constructed. The research results show that the model's early warning accuracy reaches 85%, and the false alarm rate is only 15%, which can predict the possibility of geological hazards after the next 3 h.

Abstract:Landslides, debris flows, and other destructive natural hazards induced by heavy rainfall in mountainous regions are sometimes not independent but combined to form a disaster chain. Based on the integral link between the triggering of the landslide and the subsequent debris flow, we propose an approach that combines the Transient Rainfall Infiltration and Grid-Based Regional Slope Stability (TRIGRS) model and the Rapid Mass Movements Simulation (RAMMS) model to achieve hourly hazard prediction. The results indicate that the TRIGRS model performed well in predicting the spatial distribution of the shallow landslides, with a success rate of 81.86%. Thus, it is reasonable to use it as the initial input for debris flow simulations. The relationship between the landslide area and the accumulated rainfall obtained using the TRIGRS model is a power-law relationship, which provides a reference for regions that lack rainfall data to predict the material source of a debris flow. The coupled model was found to have a good accuracy of 76.77% in simulating the debris flow. This was close to the debris flow simulation based on the interpreted landslides, and it still produced reasonable results and a more practical value. Furthermore, the proposed coupled model can dynamically predict disasters by the hour based on actual rainfall events. Therefore, the results of this study help provide a more complete hazard prediction picture for rainfall-induced landslide-debris flow hazards in mountainous regions.

Abstract:In recent years, the frequency of extreme weather has increased, and urban waterlogging caused by sudden rainfall has occurred from time to time. With the development of urbanization, a large amount of land has been developed and the proportion of impervious area has increased, intensifying the risk of urban waterlogging. How to use the available meteorological data for accurate prediction and early warning of waterlogging hazards has become a key issue in the field of disaster prevention and risk assessment. In this paper, based on historical meteorological data, we combine domain knowledge and model parameters to experimentally extract rainfall time series related features for future waterlogging depth prediction. A novel waterlogging depth prediction model that applies only rainfall data as input is proposed by machine learning algorithms. By analyzing a large amount of historical flooding monitoring data, a "rainfall-waterlogging amplification factor" based on the geographical features of monitoring stations is constructed to quantify the mapping relationship between rainfall and waterlogging depths at different locations. After the model is trained and corrected by the measured data, the prediction error for short-time rainfall basically reaches within 2 cm. This method improves prediction performance by a factor of 2.5–3 over featureless time series methods. It effectively overcomes the limitations of small coverage of monitoring stations and insufficient historical waterlogging data, and can achieve more accurate short-term waterlogging prediction. At the same time, it can provide reference suggestions for the government to conduct waterlogging risk analysis and add new sensor stations by counting the amplification factor of other locations.

Abstract:Rainfall-triggered landslide are a typical geological hazard in the southeastern coastal area of China. The disaster process of rainfall-triggered landslide is investigated by field monitoring, model tests, three-dimensional reconstruction and discrete element numerical simulation. Intelligent monitoring and warning technology for rainfall-triggered landslide on the basis of multisource information is proposed. The results show that confining pressure has an effect on the disaster process of rainfall-triggered landslide. The failure scale and trigger time under confining pressure are smaller than those without confining pressure, which is more suitable for determining the failure characteristics of rainfall-triggered landslide. All-weather monitoring of landslides is carried out by collinear triocular visual equipment. Feature matching, point reprojection and point cloud generation are carried out by automatically extracting image depth information. A three-dimensional model of the prototype slope is constructed to identify its danger zone. A three-dimensional numerical model of a slope is established via the discrete element method on the basis of three-dimensional reconstruction technology. By analysing the variation characteristics of the displacement and soil pressure of a slope under rainfall, a two-variable early-warning technology of displacement–soil pressure is proposed, which integrates multiple early-warning technologies. The instability mechanism of landslides under extreme rainfall is investigated. Moreover, a multisource intelligent monitoring and warning system for rainfall-triggered landslide is developed by integrating information from model tests, three-dimensional reconstructions, numerical simulations, and field monitoring. The visualization and intelligent prediction of rainfall landslide disaster situations are realized. This work can provide a reference for monitoring and warning of rainfall-triggered landslide.
A Dynamic Early Warning Model for Flash Floods Based on Rainfall Pattern Identification

Abstract:Flash floods are one of the most devastating natural hazards in mountainous and hilly areas. In this study, a dynamic warning model was proposed to improve the warning accuracy by addressing the problem of ignoring the randomness and uncertainty of rainfall patterns in flash flood warning. A dynamic identification method for rainfall patterns was proposed based on the similarity theory and characteristic rainfall patterns database. The characteristic rainfall patterns were constructed by k-means clustering of historical rainfall data. Subsequently, the dynamic flood early warning model was proposed based on the real-time correction of rainfall patterns and flooding simulation by the HEC-HMS (Hydrologic Engineering Center's Hydrologic Modeling System) model. To verify the proposed model, three small watersheds in China were selected as case studies. The results show that the rainfall patterns identified by the proposed approach exhibit a high correlation with the observed rainfall. With the increase of measured rainfall information, the dynamic correction of the identified rainfall patterns results in corresponding flood forecasts with Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) exceeding 0.8 at t = 4, t = 5, and t = 6, thereby improving the accuracy of flash flood warnings. Simultaneously, the proposed model extends the forecast lead time with high accuracy. For rainfall with a duration of six hours in the Xinxian watershed and eight hours in the Tengzhou watershed, the proposed model issues early warnings two hours and three hours before the end of the rainfall, respectively, with a warning accuracy of more than 0.90. The proposed model can provide technical support for flash flood management in mountainous and hilly watersheds.

Abstract:Abstract Urban expansion caused numerous geological hazards, particularly in the mountainous areas. In this article, the unsaturated soil mechanics combined with a numerical method is applied to build the rainfall thresholds for the Xiangmi Lake slope in early warning. The drainage mechanism in soil slope under different rainfall conditions has been studied. Then, the actual rainfall data collected in the rainy season are taken as the rainfall condition to simulate the actual rainfall situation. The corresponding safety factor of the slope under the rainfall has been calculated and compared with the improved deformation tangential angle criterion for the slope safety prediction. The tangent angle can be used as the judgment basis to classify the early warning levels of a rainstorm, which helps to establish the early warning model of slope rainfall and guide the landslide early warning.

Abstract:Landslide warning and forecasting is essential to landslide risk management. This paper establishes a GIS-based landslide warning and forecasting model of Shenzhen where rainfall-trigged landslides have caused great property and life loss. Based on the high-resolution observation data of rainfall and landslide occurrences in Shenzhen, Kriging interpolation model is applied to derive the regional rainfall data prior to the occurrence of landslides. The binary logistic model is then trained by the forward stepwise method, in which the precipitation of the first, second and fourth day prior to the occurrences of landslide are selected as significant explanatory factors. Then, the confusion matrix and AUC/ROC are calculated to verify the model. Finally the critical precipitation of landslide warning and forecasting of Shenzhen is determined. This paper may provide concrete support for landslide risk management work in Shenzhen and helpful reference for related studies.
