Abstract:Chitosan is a biodegradable and biocompatible polysaccharide obtained by partial deacetylation of chitin. This polymer has been gaining increasing popularity due to its natural origin, favorable physicochemical properties, and multidirectional bioactivity. In agriculture, the greatest hopes are raised by the possibility of using chitosan as a biostimulant, a plant protection product, an elicitor, or an agent to increase the storage stability of plant raw materials. The most important properties of chitosan include induction of plant defense mechanisms and regulation of metabolic processes. Additionally, it has antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, and antioxidant activity. The effectiveness of chitosan interactions is determined by its origin, deacetylation degree and acetylation pattern, molecular weight, type of chemical modifications, pH, concentration, and solubility. There is a need to conduct research on alternative sources of chitosan, extraction methods, optimization of physicochemical properties, and commercial implementation of scientific progress outcomes in this field. Moreover, studies are necessary to assess the bioactivity and toxicity of chitosan nanoparticles and chitosan conjugates with other substances and to evaluate the consequences of the large-scale use thereof. This review presents the unique properties of chitosan and its derivatives that have the greatest importance for plant production and yield quality as well as the benefits and limitations of their application.
Effect of Ethylene and Abscisic Acid on Steroid and Triterpenoid Synthesis in Calendula officinalis Hairy Roots and Saponin Release to the Culture Medium

Abstract:Phytohormones (plant growth regulators) can be applied as efficient elicitors to enhance the productivity of plant in vitro cultures, due to their significance in regulating the plant metabolism and strong influence on plant defense responses. In the present study, the effects of exogenous ethylene (ETY, applied in the form of ethephon as an ethylene-generating agent) and abscisic acid (ABA) on the synthesis of triterpenoids and steroids in Calendula officinalis hairy roots were investigated. ABA appeared to be an efficient elicitor of the biosynthesis of triterpenoid oleanolic acid (almost two-fold) and the release of its glycosides (saponins) to the culture medium (up to 6.6-fold). ETY had only a slight effect on triterpenoid metabolism; instead, it strongly influenced steroid metabolism, leading to profound modifications of the quantitative profiles of these compounds, particularly the ratio of stigmasterol to sitosterol. Both the applied phytohormones influenced the interplay between steroid and triterpenoid biosynthetic pathways, revealing the symptoms of their competition.

Abstract:Chitosan is illustrated in research as a stimulant of plant tolerance and resistance that promotes natural defense mechanisms against biotic and abiotic stressors, and its use may lessen the amount of agrochemicals utilized in agriculture. Recent literature reports indicate the high efficacy of soil or foliar usage of chitin and chitosan in the promotion of plant growth and the induction of secondary metabolites biosynthesis in various species, such as Artemisia annua, Curcuma longa, Dracocephalum kotschyi, Catharanthus roseus, Fragaria × ananassa, Ginkgo biloba, Iberis amara, Isatis tinctoria, Melissa officinalis, Mentha piperita, Ocimum basilicum, Origanum vulgare ssp. Hirtum, Psammosilene tunicoides, Salvia officinalis, Satureja isophylla, Stevia rebaudiana, and Sylibum marianum, among others. This work focuses on the outstanding scientific contributions to the field of the production and quality of aromatic and medicinal plants, based on the different functions of chitosan and chitin in sustainable crop production. The application of chitosan can lead to increased medicinal plant production and protects plants against harmful microorganisms. The effectiveness of chitin and chitosan is also due to the low concentration required, low cost, and environmental safety. On the basis of showing such considerable characteristics, there is increasing attention on the application of chitin and chitosan biopolymers in horticulture and agriculture productions.

Abstract:Several polysaccharides augment plant growth and productivity and galvanise defence against pathogens. Such elicitors have ecological superiority over traditional growth regulators, considering their amplified biocompatibility, biodegradability, bioactivity, non-toxicity, ubiquity, and inexpensiveness. Chitosan is a chitin-derived polysaccharide that has recently been spotlighted among plant scientists. Chitosan supports plant growth and development and protects against microbial entities such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, and insects. In this review, we discuss the current knowledge of chitosan's antimicrobial and insecticidal potential with recent updates. These effects are further explored with the possibilities of chitosan's active correspondence with phytohormones such as jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), indole acetic acid (IAA), abscisic acid (ABA), and gibberellic acid (GA). The stress-induced redox shift in cellular organelles could be substantiated by the intricate participation of chitosan with reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant metabolism, including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD). Furthermore, we propose how chitosan could be intertwined with cellular signalling through Ca2+, ROS, nitric oxide (NO), transcription factors (TFs), and defensive gene activation.
Chitosan stimulates root hair callose deposition, endomembrane dynamics, and inhibits root hair growth

Abstract:Although angiosperm plants generally react to immunity elicitors like chitin or chitosan by the cell wall callose deposition, this response in particular cell types, especially upon chitosan treatment, is not fully understood. Here we show that the growing root hairs (RHs) of Arabidopsis can respond to a mild (0.001%) chitosan treatment by the callose deposition and by a deceleration of the RH growth. We demonstrate that the glucan synthase‐like 5/PMR4 is vital for chitosan‐induced callose deposition but not for RH growth inhibition. Upon the higher chitosan concentration (0.01%) treatment, RHs do not deposit callose, while growth inhibition is prominent. To understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms underpinning the responses to two chitosan treatments, we analysed early Ca2+ and defence‐related signalling, gene expression, cell wall and RH cellular endomembrane modifications. Chitosan‐induced callose deposition is also present in the several other plant species, including functionally analogous and evolutionarily only distantly related RH‐like structures such as rhizoids of bryophytes. Our results point to the RH callose deposition as a conserved strategy of soil‐anchoring plant cells to cope with mild biotic stress. However, high chitosan concentration prominently disturbs RH intracellular dynamics, tip‐localised endomembrane compartments, growth and viability, precluding callose deposition.

Abstract:Plants plastically alter their metabolism in response to environmental stimuli, which induces changes in the accumulation of specialized metabolites. This ability can be utilized to manipulate plant phytochemistry in a desired direction. However, the abundance of secondary metabolites in the different plant species, especially medicinal, is enormous; therefore, it is difficult to establish a clear direction for the effects of metabolic modulators on phytochemical composition, especially given the possibility of using different types thereof. In order to gain insight into these changes, we investigated the effects of foliar-applied chitosan (ChL, 100 mg/L), selenium (Se, 10 mg/L), salicylic acid (SA, 150 mg/L), or an equal volume mixture thereof on Hypericum perforatum L. metabolism. Selenium and SA proved to be the more effective than ChL in enhancing the accumulation of phenolic compounds. The greatest increase was found in the concentration of neochlorogenic acid after Se-spraying. The treatment with the elicitors generally increased the concentration of identified flavonoids, but not the level of naphthodianthrone or phloroglucinol metabolites. The most pronounced response was observed on day 10 following the application of the compounds, and is likely the consequence of elevated levels of O2-˙, free proline, and modulated activity of enzymatic antioxidants.
Enantioselective Ecotoxicity of the Herbicide Dichlorprop and Complexes Formed with Chitosan in Two Fresh Water Green Algae

Abstract:To reduce the leaching potential, to prevent groundwater contamination and to maintain the efficacy of a pesticide, natural polysaccharides have received increasing attention due to their biocompatibility and useful biological reactivity for controlled release formulations (CRFs) of pesticides. In this paper, the toxicities of the chiral herbicide dichlorprop (DCPP) and its complexes with chitosan molecules (DCPP-CS) and chitosan nanoparticles (DCPP-NP) to two different green algae were determined and compared. The inhibition rates of DCPP, DCPP-CS and DCPP-NP were determined at 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, 168 h, and the results show that (S)-DCPP was more toxic to Chlorella vulgaris than (R)-DCPP, while the (R)-DCPP was more toxic to Scenedesmus obliquus than (S)-DCPP. The study also found that the chiral selectivity of DCPP to Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus could be changed when DCPP was complexed with chitosan molecules (CS) or chitosan nanoparticles (NP). For Chlorella vulgaris, the order of inhibition was (R)-DCPP-CS > (S)-DCPP-CS and (R)-DCPP-NP > (S)-DCPP-NP; for Scenedesmus obliquus, the order was (S)-DCPP-CS > (R)-DCPP-CS and (S)DCPP-NP > (R)-DCPP-NP. This phenomenon suggests that the enantioselective behaviors of chiral compounds might shift when interactions with other chiral receptors coexist in different biological environments. Additionally, chitosan molecules and chitosan nanoparticles also showed different toxicities, which could be ascribed to the difference in the physicochemical properties between CS and NP or the differences in the cell walls of the two fresh water green algae.

Abstract:Chitosan is a very versatile biomaterial with countless applications in different fields. Due to its biodegradability, non-toxicity, and biocompatibility, the use of chitosan is associated with sustainable practices. When applied to plants, in an agricultural context, chitosan induces defense mechanisms, stress resistance, and increased productivity and it has proven to be a feasible alternative to harmful agrochemicals. For in vitro plant culture, chitosan has been also applied to crops and other economically important species, with promising results. In this review, we discuss the recent applications of chitosan on plant tissue culture. Chitosan has been mainly used for the improvement of several growth parameters, but it has been also applied to enhance in vitro seed germination and accumulation of secondary metabolites. The plant material used, the concentrations and forms of chitosan employed, and the influence of chitosan on other plant parameters during in vitro culture are revised. We anticipate that chitosan applications will increase in a near future because of its potential and the increasing demand for more eco-friendly procedures.

Abstract:Chitosan is a natural biopolymer modified from chitins which act as a potential biostimulant and elicitor in agriculture. It is non-toxic, biodegradable and biocompatible which favors potentially broad application. It enhances the physiological response and mitigates the adverse effect of abiotic stresses through stress transduction pathway via secondary messenger(s). Chitosan treatment stimulates photosynthetic rate, stomatal closure through ABA synthesis; enhances antioxidant enzymes via nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide signaling pathways, and induces production of organic acids, sugars, amino acids and other metabolites which are required for the osmotic adjustment, stress signaling, and energy metabolism under stresses. It is also known to form complexes with heavy metals and used as tool for phytoremediation and bioremediation of soil. Besides, this is used as antitranspirant compound through foliar application in many plants thus reducing water use and ensures protection from other negative effects. Based on such beneficial properties, chitosan is utilized in sustainable agricultural practices owing to changing climates. Our review gathers the recent information on chitosan centered upon the abiotic stress responses which could be useful in future crop improvement programs.

Abstract:Chitosan, a natural polysaccharide, is widely regarded as a biocompatible and potential carrier for controlled-release drug formulations. However, the potential effect of chitosan on the environmental behavior of contaminants is poorly understood, especially on chiral chemicals. In this study, the changes in bioavailability of the chiral herbicide dichlorprop to Chlorella pyrenoidosa by chitosan were investigated. The dissipation of (S)-enantiomer in Chlorella pyrenoidosa culture media without chitosan was faster than that of the herbicidally active (R)-enantiomer, whereas it was inversed to (R)-enantiomer being faster than (S)-enantiomer when chitosan was added into the media. In the absence of chitosan, the toxicity of (R)-enantiomer to Chlorella pyrenoidosa was more potent than that of the (S)-enantiomer. On the contrary, in the presence of chitosan, (R)-enantiomer was less toxic than (S)-enantiomer. These observations clearly suggest that chitosan changed the enantioselective bioavailability of dichlorprop. Fluorescence spectroscopic analysis showed that the interaction between chitosan and dichlorprop enantiomers depended greatly on the steric structure of dichlorprop, which offers a possible explanation as to why the addition of chitosan changed the enantioselective dissipation of dichlorprop by Chlorella pyrenoidosa. This work suggests that the enantioselective behaviors of chiral compounds in the environment might be shifted when interactions with other chiral receptors coexist.

Abstract:Chitin and chitosan are natural compounds that are biodegradable and nontoxic and have gained noticeable attention due to their effective contribution to increased yield and agro-environmental sustainability. Several effects have been reported for chitosan application in plants. Particularly, it can be used in plant defense systems against biological and environmental stress conditions and as a plant growth promoter—it can increase stomatal conductance and reduce transpiration or be applied as a coating material in seeds. Moreover, it can be effective in promoting chitinolytic microorganisms and prolonging storage life through post-harvest treatments, or benefit nutrient delivery to plants since it may prevent leaching and improve slow release of nutrients in fertilizers. Finally, it can remediate polluted soils through the removal of cationic and anionic heavy metals and the improvement of soil properties. On the other hand, chitin also has many beneficial effects such as plant growth promotion, improved plant nutrition and ability to modulate and improve plants’ resistance to abiotic and biotic stressors. The present review presents a literature overview regarding the effects of chitin, chitosan and derivatives on horticultural crops, highlighting their important role in modern sustainable crop production; the main limitations as well as the future prospects of applications of this particular biostimulant category are also presented.

Variability in growth and biosynthetic activity of Calendula officinalis hairy roots

Abstract:Calendula officinalis is a widespread medicinal plant with a sufficiently well-studied chemical composition. Secondary metabolites synthesized by C.officinalis plants have pharmacological value for treating numerous diseases, and various types of aseptic in vitro cultures can be used as a source of these compounds. From this perspective, hairy roots attract considerable attention for the production of bioactive chemicals, including flavonoids with antioxidant activity. This paper shows the possibility of C.officinalis hairy roots obtaining with 100% frequency by Agrobacterium rhizogenes genetic transformation. Hairy root lines differed in growth rate and flavonoid content. In particular, flavonoids were accumulated in the amount of up to 6.68 ± 0.28 mg/g of wet weight. Methyl jasmonate in the concentration of 10 µM inhibited root growth to a small extent but stimulated the synthesis of flavonoids. The antioxidant activity and the reducing power increased in the roots grown in the medium with methyl jasmonate. The strong correlation of antioxidant activity and reducing power with flavonoid content was detected. The influence of extraction conditions on the content of flavonoids in the extracts and their bioactivity was determined. The potent reducing activity of extracts from hairy roots allowed the production of silver nanoparticles, which was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy.
Chitosan versus plant growth regulators: a comparative analysis of their effects on in vitro development of Serapias vomeracea (Burm.f.) Briq.

Abstract:This study aimed to compare the in vitro effects of chitosan oligomers and polymer with commonly-used plant growth regulators (PGRs) on seed germination, protocorm formation, and organ development in Serapias vomeracea. The effects of N-acetylated (10%) chitosan oligomer mixture (CHI-OM) with a degree of polymerization (DP) between 2 and 15 (5, 10, 15, and 20 mg L−1) and chitosan polymer (CHI-P) with a DP of 70 were compared with commonly-used cytokinins [6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and kinetin (KIN)], auxins [indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA)], and jasmonic acid (JAS) at 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg L−1. The medium supplemented with CHI-P at 5 mg L−1 gave the highest seed germination rate, whereas JAS and CHI-OM triggered protocorm formation better than the all treatments tested. The JAS and IAA treatments resulted in intense browning of the roots. The CHI-P treatments at high concentrations and JAS treatments at moderate concentrations increased mean shoot length while the medium containing KIN at 0.5 mg L−1 induced root elongation significantly. The root elongation-inhibitory effect of chitosan was observed at the higher concentrations of CHI-OM, but the media containing 10 mg L−1 CHI-OM and 15 mg L−1 CHI-P triggered adventitious rooting. However, the highest tuberization success was found after 10 mg L−1 CHI-OM and 0.5 mg L−1 JAS treatments. Tuber development was achieved in the media supplemented with BAP and CHI-OM. This study suggested that well-characterized chitosan could be used as an alternative to JAS and BAP in orchid cultures.

Abstract:Chitosan, a copolymer of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and D-glucosamine, which possesses properties that make it useful in various fields, is produced by the deacetylation of chitin derivatives. It is used in agriculture as a biostimulant for plant growth and protection, it also induces several responsive genes, proteins, and secondary metabolites in plants. Chitosan elicits a signal transduction pathway and transduces secondary molecules such as hydrogen peroxide and nitric oxide. Under biotic stress, chitosan can stimulate phytoalexins, pathogenesis-related proteins, and proteinase inhibitors. Pretreatment of chitosan before exposure to abiotic stresses (drought, salt, and heat) induces plant growth, production of antioxidant enzymes, secondary metabolites, and abscisic acid (ABA). It also causes changes in physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology of the plant cells. However, plant responses depend on different chitosan-based structures, concentrations, species, and developmental stages. This review collects updated information on chitosan applications, particularly in plant defense responses to biotic and abiotic stress conditions.
Biostimulant Effects of Chaetomium globosum and Minimedusa polyspora Culture Filtrates on Cichorium intybus Plant: Growth Performance and Metabolomic Traits

Abstract:In this study, we investigated the biostimulant effect of fungal culture filtrates obtained from Chaetomium globosum and Minimedusa polyspora on growth performance and metabolomic traits of chicory ( Cichorium intybus ) plants. For the first time, we showed that M. polyspora culture filtrate exerts a direct plant growth-promoting effect through an increase of biomass, both in shoots and roots, and of the leaf area. Conversely, no significant effect on morphological traits and biomass yield was observed in C. intybus plants treated with C. globosum culture filtrate. Based on 1 H-NMR metabolomics data, differential metabolites and their related metabolic pathways were highlighted. The treatment with C. globosum and M. polyspora culture filtrates stimulated a common response in C. intybus roots involving the synthesis of 3-OH-butyrate through the decrease in the synthesis of fatty acids and sterols, as a mechanism balancing the NADPH/NADP + ratio. The fungal culture filtrates differently triggered the phenylpropanoid pathway in C. intybus plants: C. globosum culture filtrate increased phenylalanine and chicoric acid in the roots, whereas M. polyspora culture filtrate stimulated an increase of 4-OH-benzoate. Chicoric acid, whose biosynthetic pathway in the chicory plant is putative and still not well known, is a very promising natural compound playing an important role in plant defense. On the contrary, benzoic acids serve as precursors for a wide variety of essential compounds playing crucial roles in plant fitness and defense response activation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that shows the biostimulant effect of C. globosum and M. polyspora culture filtrates on C. intybus growth and metabolome, increasing the knowledge on fungal bioresources for the development of biostimulants.

Abstract:Chitosan encourages the growth of plants, controls their metabolic processes and homeostasis, and activates their defence mechanisms. On one side, it hinders the ability of pathogens by preventing their growth and limiting their reproduction, so it will become a more common and ideal asset for agricultural sustainability. Additionally, cesium (Cs) stimulated the SOS1 pathway and raised a number of gene transcripts related to energy generation, phenol metabolism, proton motive force, salt compartmentalization, and other processes. However, plants exposed to salt stress were treated with cesium nanoparticles (CsNPs) and modified CsBMs, which boosted indole terpene alkaloid metabolism, defense-related genes, decreased ROS formation by boosting jasmonic acid (JA) signalling, increased essential oil, anthocyanins, membrane stability, alkaloids, and diterpene glycosides. This is the first review that specifically compares Cs/CsNPs/modified CsBMs treatment options under salt stress and offers insights about the biological and biochemical parameters of the plants. It also recommends using CsNPs and modified CsBMs rather than Cs for better plant function under salinity stress.

Abstract:Key messageWater-soluble chitosan oligosaccharides (COS) affect xanthone and volatile organic compound content, as well as antifungal activity against human pathogenic fungi of extracts obtained from Hypericum perforatum root cultures.AbstractSeveral studies have demonstrated the elicitor power of chitosan on xanthone biosynthesis in root cultures of H. perforatum. One of the major limitations to the use of chitosan, both for basic and applied research, is the need to use acidified water for solubilization. To overcome this problem, the elicitor effect of water-soluble COS on the biosynthesis of both xanthones and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was evaluated in the present study. The analysis of xanthones and VOCs was performed by HPLC and GC–MS headspace analysis. The obtained results showed that COS are very effective in enhancing xanthone biosynthesis. With 400 mg L−1 COS, a xanthone content of about 30 mg g−1 DW was obtained. The antifungal activity of extracts obtained with 400 mg L−1 COS was the highest, with MIC50 of 32 µg mL−1 against Candida albicans and 32–64 µg mL−1 against dermatophytes, depending on the microorganism. Histochemical investigations suggested the accumulation of isoprenoids in the secretory ducts of H. perforatum roots. The presence of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes was confirmed by the headspace analysis. Other volatile hydrocarbons have been identified. The biosynthesis of most VOCs showed significant changes in response to COS, suggesting their involvement in plant–fungus interactions.

Abstract:Chitosan plays an important role in regulating growth and eliciting defense in many plant species. However, the exact metabolic response of plants to chitosan is still not clear. The present study performed an integrative analysis of metabolite profiles in chitosan-treated wheat seedlings and further investigated the response of enzyme activities and transcript expression related to the primary carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) metabolism. Metabolite profiling revealed that chitosan could induce significant difference of organic acids, sugars and amino acids in leaves of wheat seedlings. A higher accumulation of sucrose content was observed after chitosan treatment, accompanied by an increase in sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) and fructose 1, 6-2 phosphatase (FBPase) activities as well as an up-regulation of relative expression level. Several metabolites associated with tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, including oxaloacetate and malate, were also improved along with an elevation of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) and pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) activities. On the other hand, chitosan could also enhance the N reduction and N assimilation. Glutamate, aspartate and some other amino acids were higher in chitosan-treated plants, accompanied by the activation of key enzymes of N reduction and glutamine synthetase/glutamate synthase (GS/GOGAT) cycle. Together, these results suggested a pleiotropic modulation of carbon and nitrogen metabolism in wheat seedlings induced by chitosan and provided a significant insight into the metabolic mechanism of plants in response to chitosan for the first time, and it would give a basic guidance for the future application of chitosan in agriculture.

Abstract:Chitosan is a versatile compound with multiple biotechnological applications. This polymer inhibits clinically important human fungal pathogens under the same carbon and nitrogen status as in blood. Chitosan permeabilises their high-fluidity plasma membrane and increases production of intracellular oxygen species (ROS). Conversely, chitosan is compatible with mammalian cell lines as well as with biocontrol fungi (BCF). BCF resistant to chitosan have low-fluidity membranes and high glucan/chitin ratios in their cell walls. Recent studies illustrate molecular and physiological basis of chitosan-root interactions. Chitosan induces auxin accumulation in Arabidopsis roots. This polymer causes overexpression of tryptophan-dependent auxin biosynthesis pathway. It also blocks auxin translocation in roots. Chitosan is a plant defense modulator. Endophytes and fungal pathogens evade plant immunity converting chitin into chitosan. LysM effectors shield chitin and protect fungal cell walls from plant chitinases. These enzymes together with fungal chitin deacetylases, chitosanases and effectors play determinant roles during fungal colonization of plants. This review describes chitosan mode of action (cell and gene targets) in fungi and plants. This knowledge will help to develop chitosan for agrobiotechnological and medical applications.

Abstract:Southern blight disease, caused by the fungal pathogen Athelia rolfsii, suppresses plant growth and reduces product yield in Cannabis sativa agriculture. Mechanisms of pathology of this soil‐borne disease remain poorly understood, with disease management strategies reliant upon broad‐spectrum antifungal use. Exposure to chitosan, a natural elicitor, has been proposed as an alternative method to control diverse fungal diseases in an eco‐friendly manner. In this study, C. sativa plants were grown in the Root‐TRAPR system, a transparent hydroponic growth device, where plant roots were primed with .2% colloidal chitosan prior to A. rolfsii inoculation. Both chitosan‐primed and unprimed inoculated plants displayed classical symptoms of wilting and yellowish leaves, indicating successful infection. Non‐primed infected plants showed increased shoot defense responses with doubling of peroxidase and chitinase activities. The levels of growth and defense hormones including auxin, cytokinin, and jasmonic acid were increased 2–5‐fold. In chitosan‐primed infected plants, shoot peroxidase activity and phytohormone levels were decreased 1.5–4‐fold relative to the unprimed infected plants. When compared with shoots, roots were less impacted by A. rolfsii infection, but the pathogen secreted cell wall‐degrading enzymes into the root‐growth solution. Chitosan priming inhibited root growth, with root lengths of chitosan‐primed plants approximately 65% shorter than the control, but activated root defense responses, with root peroxidase activity increased 2.7‐fold along with increased secretion of defense proteins. The results suggest that chitosan could be an alternative platform to manage southern blight disease in C. sativa cultivation; however, further optimization is required to maximize effectiveness of chitosan.
