Abstract:Applied Physics Letters, Volume 120, Issue 26, June 2022. Achieving broadband sound absorption in two-port open ducts is of fundamental importance in the acoustics, with wide applications ranging from noise control to duct sound mitigation. Yet the existing metamaterial designs are usually based on the use of Helmholtz-type cavities, posing limitations on the resulting absorption performance. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a mechanism that uses coupling modulation of the resonance energy leakage and loss in ventilated metamaterials to realize optimal sound absorption. We design a slit-type unit cell as a practical implementation of the proposed mechanism and analytically prove its potential to obtain the desired leakage and loss factors simultaneously by properly adjusting the structural parameters. We benchmark our designed metamaterial with a conventional Helmholtz resonator-based design to demonstrate its advantage of sound absorption. Good agreement is observed between the theoretical predictions and experimental measurements. Our strategy represents a paradigm extending beyond classical models and opens up possibility for the design of high-efficiency acoustic absorbing devices and their applications in diverse scenarios especially broadband duct noise muffling.

Abstract:A coiled Helmholtz cavity acoustic metamaterial structure, which consists of three perforated plates, two channel layers and an air back cavity, is designed to address the problem of poor absorption of low-frequency band noise by conventional acoustic materials, and the results demonstrate that the absorption peak frequency of this structure is lower than that of a conventional Helmholtz cavity. The finite element method based on COMSOL multiphysics field coupling software is used to analyze the sound absorption characteristics of the metamaterial single-cell structure and to investigate the effect of structural parameter variations on its sound absorption performance. The problem of broadband sound absorption is solved by synergistically coupling two single-cell structures and then by designing the geometrical parameters of the coiled Helmholtz cavity structure, multiple basic units with absorption peaks at different frequencies are connected in parallel to design a multiunit coupled structure with low-frequency broadband sound absorption performance. In addition, the multiunit coupled structure is embedded in a porous material to design a composite space folding metamaterial structure, which can simultaneously absorb both low- and high-frequency noise and achieve a large broadband sound absorption performance above 200 Hz.

Abstract:Multifunctional materials are highly desired for practical engineering applications. Owing to the ubiquitous noise and impact energy hazards in many settings, traditional materials and conventional architected metamaterials are incapable of preventing these damages simultaneously. Herein, we report a new paradigm, via a decoupled approach, in the design of acousto-mechanical multifunctional metamaterials. We leverage the morphology of a Helmholtz resonator, such that the sound-absorbing and mechanical components are designed independently. For sound absorption, we can adopt the coherent coupling design for a favorable resonant response, while for the mechanical response, we can adopt customized struts. We then demonstrate our concept via 3D printing. Experimentally measured remarkable broadband absorption in the practical low-frequency range (< 1.0 kHz) is achieved. Absorption mechanisms attribute to viscous and thermal boundary dissipation. Compression tests also reveal the metamaterials to be highly deformation resilient with a recovery of up to 98%, owing to both the lattice structure design and the viscoelastic behavior of the base material. Through this decoupled design, we further demonstrate the potentials of our metamaterials in customizable absorption, strength, pseudo-reusability, and impact resistance. The proposed design paradigm broadens the horizon for the design of multifunctional materials, offering an impetus to their exploration for practical applications.

Abstract:We propose a thin-walled mesoscopic hybrid slit-resonator metamaterial with excellent broadband sound absorption performance through developing an integrated material-structure- process-functional design method. The slit-resonator structure comprehensively utilizes the advantages of the porous material, the slit-type absorber and the Fabry-Pérot resonance unit, and exhibits unprecedented excellent large-broadband absorption capability. The ultra-thin walls ensure the high-porosity of the entire structure, and the narrow channel is equivalent to a designable porous medium, which can ensure excellent broadband absorption performance in the middle- and high-frequency ranges. As the challenging in fabricating of ultra-thin large-size walls, a ceramic-containing high-temperature resistant material is employed, and a 3D printing process with a special preheating-preservation-cooling cyclic heat treatment is accordingly developed. Through the joint development of materials and processes, the high-precision preparation of large-size and ultra-thin shell structures is realized. In addition, by embedding a few Helmholtz resonant units into the designed absorber to generate discrete low-frequency absorption peaks, the lowest absorption frequency is further reduced to 1/5 of the original one. The average absorption of absorber reach 0.8 above 50 Hz and 0.85 above 200 Hz, the thickness is reduced to 1/39 of the lowest absorption wavelength, which is only about 1/10 of the absorber used in traditional anechoic chambers.

Abstract:The advancement of acoustic metamaterials enables the highly efficient absorption of low-frequency noise with a subwavelength structure thickness, but the complexity of these structures often hinders their large-scale practical applications. Here, we propose a straightforward and compact acoustic metamaterial structure composed of Helmholtz resonators with side slits (HRSS) for low-frequency noise absorption. The introduction of side slits not only simplifies the overall structure but also allows for easy adjustment of acoustic characteristics. By adjusting the depth of the resonator within the slit across 25 distinct units, an absorption coefficient above 0.8 is realized from 470 to 930 Hz. This work demonstrates the extensive low-frequency sound absorption capability of HRSS, providing valuable insights into the design of future practical acoustic materials.

Abstract:Achieving broadband absorption of sound waves below 500 Hz with materials of sub-wavelength thickness is significant but still a great challenge in academia and industries. Here, we present and theoretically analyze an airtight sound-absorbing metasurface constructed by a membrane-covered and coiled Helmholtz resonator. It is discovered that the metasurface possesses a near-perfect absorption with a working wavelength approximately 33.6 times greater than the total thickness, which stems from synthetic modulation on acoustic reactance brought by the membrane, air gap formed behind the membrane, and a coiled channel. Furthermore, on-demand broadband absorption below 500 Hz is achieved by parallel assemblies consisting of four subunits. An excellent agreement between measurements and predictions confirms the validity of the proposed structures. The airtight construction also broadens its application scenarios compared to the common perforated absorbers with open pores directly exposed to external environments. Our design provides a new structure paradigm for low-frequency sound absorption.

Abstract:Utilizing absorbers with sub-wavelength thickness for low-frequency broadband noise control is a challenging problem, and rapid on-demand design of structures based on target noise frequency has received continuous attention. In this work, nested cavities are introduced into the typical neck-embedded Helmholtz resonator (NEHR) to obtain the nested neck-embedded Helmholtz resonator (NNEHR), which exhibits better cavity partitioning volume fraction and covers wider sound absorption band. Both theoretical analysis and simulations demonstrate that NNEHR possesses superior acoustic properties: generating an additional absorption peak, lowering the position of the first absorption peak by 11 %, and increasing the absorption coefficient by 4.7 %. Instantaneous velocity fields and thermal-viscous energy dissipation density illustrate that the efficient sound absorption of NNEHR originates from resonant dissipation in the neck and surrounding areas. Furthermore, by combining the theoretical model with genetic algorithms, three sets of NNEHR metasurfaces are optimized. The optimized structures achieve average absorption coefficients of 0.831, 0.913, and 0.885 in the range of 250–550 Hz, 400–1000 Hz, and 500–2000 Hz, with a thickness of only 50 mm, reflecting sub-wavelength, low-frequency broadband sound absorption characteristics. The excellent absorption stems from synergistic coupled weak resonances and higher-order absorption peaks of constituent units, and the overdamping characteristic ensures the realization of the optimal structure with minimal thickness. The contribution of weak resonant units to the total sound absorption performance can be measured by the surface admittance normalized by the total incident area, and the essence of the coupling effect is the strong interaction between units with adjacent absorbing frequencies. The proposed structure exhibits good sound absorption performance and great adjustability, while the genetic algorithm optimization based on the theoretical model demonstrates high efficiency and robustness, providing a methodology for the design and on-demand optimization of low-frequency broadband structures.

Abstract:Acoustic metasurfaces have paved the way for the ongoing development of compact sound-absorbing devices that possess excellent ventilation capabilities. However, existing absorption mechanisms primarily focus on plane-wave fronts while neglecting omnidirectionally radiated cylindrical waves. In this study, drawing inspiration from wave-interference theory, we propose an approach to absorb cylindrical sound waves by combining artificially decorated passive monopoles and dipoles, which are synthesized by a coiled space resonator and a double-channel resonator, respectively. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, we construct an ultrasparse annular metasurface absorber with an air-channel-area ratio of 46% and a deep-subwavelength thickness. Remarkably, this absorber achieves an absorption performance of 96% (91% in the experiment) for omnidirectionally radiated cylindrical sound waves. This achievement is realized by utilizing a circular array composed of 36 metamolecules arranged in a ringlike grating structure, with each metamolecule supporting synthesized multipoles. The near-unity absorption is accomplished through destructive interference between the composite monopole and dipole, characterized using a one-dimensional impedance tube. This high-efficiency absorption, combined with excellent ventilation and compactness, introduces alternative possibilities for designing functional sound-absorbing devices that can handle low-frequency sound waves with complex wave fronts. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.21.064043 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:We propose a multi-order Helmholtz metamaterial with deep-subwavelength thickness in which perfectcontinuous acoustic absorption is achieved within 400 Hz ∼ 2800 Hz. Abstract:We report a lightweight tunable acoustic metamaterial with deep subwavelength thickness (e.g., <span class="equationTd inline-formula"><math> λ / 300</math></span>) and strong load-bearing capability for underwater low-frequency and ultra-broadband acoustic perfect absorption. The metamaterial is constructed by introducing a rubber coating and an embedded metallic neck into a metallic hexagonal honeycomb Helmholtz resonator. Physically, the quasi-Helmholtz resonance triggered by the rubber coating together with the anti-phase cancellation caused by the embedded neck leads to superior sound absorption. Theoretical predictions of the metamaterial performance agree well with finite element simulation results. With fixed external morphology (e.g., honeycomb-cored sandwich panel) and fixed overall thickness (e.g., 50 mm), key internal geometrical parameters of the proposed metamaterial can be tailored to achieve tunable perfect absorption from, e.g., 100 Hz to 300 Hz. Further, combining such tunable quasi-Helmholtz resonance leads to ultra-broadband quasi-perfect absorption from, e.g., 306 Hz to 921 Hz. This work contributes to designing underwater acoustic metamaterials and controlling underwater acoustic waves.

Abstract:The single Helmholtz resonator obtains only one absorption peak in the broad frequency range, which limits its application in reducing the noise with multiple spectra. This paper reports an acoustic multi-layer Helmholtz resonance metamaterial, which can achieve multiple absorption peaks at given low-frequency targets. Meanwhile, through adjusting structural parameters of the multi-layer Helmholtz resonator, its impedance can be altered correspondingly to realize the absorption of noise with the multi groups of specific frequencies. In this paper, in order to achieve fine absorption performance with the specific frequencies of 100 and 400 Hz for a substation noise source, the sound absorption principle of a classical Helmholtz resonator with the embedded aperture is introduced theoretically, and then two series of multi-layer Helmholtz resonance structures with different parameters are designed. Thickness of the multi-layer structure is only 1/30th of the working wavelength, and two groups of resonance peaks are generated at 100 and 400 Hz, respectively. A finite element model of the multi-layer Helmholtz resonator is constructed to simulate its absorption performance. The samples are fabricated through the 3D light-curing printing, and their sound absorption performances are detected by the standing wave method. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental data, and two peaks with near-perfect absorptions are achieved at the target frequencies. The multi-layer Helmholtz resonator for achievement of three groups of absorption peaks is proposed later. This work provides an effective method to design a sound absorber with multiple absorption peaks, which can promote the application of acoustic metamaterials.

Abstract:The Helmholtz resonant structure with a rectangular extended neck is designed in this work to solve the low-frequency broadband sound absorption problem. Theoretical and finite element absorption models have been established and are used for low-frequency acoustic design. What makes it interesting is that all parameters of the rectangular extended neck Helmholtz resonator can be adjusted to shift the working frequency. Four coupling structures with different neck depths, neck opening areas, cavity cross-sectional areas, and cavity depths are respectively designed. Each of these structures exhibits multiple sound absorption coefficient peaks to enhance the low-frequency absorption capacity. The effectiveness of the coupling structure is further analyzed by examining the broadband acoustic absorption mechanism based on the particle vibration velocity distribution. It is found that cells with different acoustic impedance contribute differently to the sound absorption, and cells with longer necks provide better noise reduction at low frequencies. The experiment is verified in the impedance tube, and the result shows that the coupling structure with 9 cells and a cavity depth of only 4cm achieves an average sound absorption coefficient above 0.8 at 210-340 Hz, thus verifying the accuracy of the theoretical model. Overall, the Helmholtz resonant cavity acoustic structure with a rectangular extended neck proposed in this study has a simple structure with low-frequency broadband acoustic absorption performance, providing a new approach for designing low-frequency broadband acoustic structures.

Abstract:Highly efficient absorption of broadband low-frequency sound with a slim subwavelength meta-structure promises extensive applications in acoustic engineering, which remains a major challenge due to the weak coupling of strong scattering resonant modes. Here, we formulate the interaction of resonant modes in different damping states on the basis of a coupled-mode theory and draw the conclusion that couplings between over-damped modes demonstrate superiority to under-damped or critically coupled states in sound absorption. Furthermore, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate an ultra-broadband sound absorber by hybridizing multi-order Helmholtz resonators, which support a series of over-damped modes in a single element with flexible key acoustic parameters, including operating frequencies and loss and leakage factors decorated at will. Due to the intense coupling between these elaborated over-damped modes, the designed absorber demonstrates 81% average absorptance for airborne sound ranging from 100 to 1000 Hz (exceeding three octaves) with a thickness down to 1/18.8 of wavelength at the lower-limit frequency. We envision the design methodology to push forward more versatile functional devices.

Abstract:We propose a lamina-shaped metamaterial absorber based on the coherently coupled weak resonances of high-order Helmholtz resonators in this work. Such an ultra-thin lamina metamaterial can achieve broadband tunable absorption (maximal absorption> 0.9), which exhibits near-perfect ventilation performance (ventilated area ratio> 0.8, ratio of wind velocity> 0.95). Benefiting from coherently coupled weak resonances between units with different structure parameters, the lamina metamaterial presents a broadband absorption (506-659 Hz with 2×3 units and 480-679 Hz with 2×4 units). The ultra-thin and simple structure shape of this sound absorption metamaterial lamina leads to not only an efficient ventilation performance but also high potential value in various scenarios of ventilated sound absorption, especially in ventilation tubes with high noise.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed an ultra-thin composite metasurface for broadband sound absorption, in which a compound Helmholtz structure and porous materials are coupled in a parallel-series arrangement. The Helmholtz structure comprises multiple compound cells with hybrid-damping modes, in which the over-damping and matched-damping impedance are integrated for a lower and broader absorption spectrum. By coupling the porous materials, the metasurface obtains above 85% average absorption over 750–10,000 Hz with a thickness of 31 mm, and the performance below 1600 Hz is significantly enhanced compared to the pure porous materials. This metasurface could possess broad applications in modern equipment considering its extraordinary absorption and compact structure.

Abstract:We propose an acoustic metasurface consisting of sub-wavelength Helmholtz resonators whose cavities are non-uniformly partitioned by membranes, aiming at perfect absorption of low-frequency sound with the aid of hybrid resonance. Compared to the existing unit cells based on Helmholtz resonators, the proposed ones with embedded membranes have lower resonance frequencies, which implies that it is possible to achieve perfect absorption of sound by using a thinner metasurface. This study provides a theoretical model for fast and accurate design considering the visco-thermal losses in narrow orifices and the higher-order modes of the membrane. By optimizing geometrical parameters and locations of the embedded membranes, we design the metasurface for perfect absorption based on the theoretical model. Experimental validation is performed in impedance tube via fabrication.

Ultra-broadband sound absorption of a multiple-cavity metastructure with gradient thickness

Abstract:In order to achieve ultra-broadband perfect sound absorption at low and middle frequencies, a novel acoustic metastructure composed of a multiple-cavity coupled resonator and melamine foam (MF) is proposed. Firstly, the metastructure termed as MPP-AG consisting of microperforated panel (MPP) and multiple annular groove cavities (AG) is investigated. Analytical research and finite element simulation are conducted, and the sound absorption characteristics are verified through the impedance-tube test. The effects of the MPP and backing cavity parameters on the sound absorption and coupling performance of the AG are studied. In Particular, MPP-AG with gradient depth shifts the initial frequency with a sound absorption coefficient greater than 0.5 to a lower 315 Hz at the deepest depth of 95 mm. The MPP-AG is optimized with the Genetic Algorithm and the absorption lower band with an absorption coefficient greater than 0.5 is shifted towards 278 Hz. Furthermore, through filling melamine foam into the MPP-AG, the improved metastructure MPP-AG-MF is established to broaden the absorption bandwidth. A perfect absorption ( α>0.8 ) between 255 and 1600 Hz can be obtained at a depth of 70 mm by the optimization of the MPP-AG-MF with the Genetic Algorithm. This study can provide significant guidance for noise attenuation and sound absorber design, which is promising to be used in aerospace, transportation, construction and mechanical design, etc.

Abstract:To date, high-efficiency low-frequency broadband noise control remains a great challenge in scientific and engineering community. This paper proposes a composite acoustic metasurface which is composed of gradient hybrid unit structure with a perforated panel, coiled-up cavities, and a separating plate. By controlling the position of the separating plate, a series of broader multistage sound absorbing peaks corresponding to different resonant frequencies can be achieved. A highly efficient low-frequency broadband sound absorbing metasurface by combining the multiple unit structures with different absorbing peaks is realized successfully, possessing an average sound absorption coefficient above 0.94 in the range from 470 Hz to 3130 Hz with a subwavelength thickness of only 89.8 mm. Furthermore, the proposed structure maintains a good mechanical performance with the compression elastic modulus of 375.57 MPa owing to the designed honeycomb structures. Compared with the traditional sound-absorbing materials, the composite hybrid honeycomb metasurface can achieve an excellent absorption performance with a simple and stable structure for practical application of low-frequency noise control.This article is protected by copyright. Low-Frequency Sound-Insulation Performance of Labyrinth-Type Helmholtz and Thin-Film Compound Acoustic Metamaterial

Abstract:This paper presents a type of acoustic metamaterial that combines a labyrinth channel with a Helmholtz cavity and a thin film. The labyrinth-opening design and thin-film combination contribute to the metamaterial's exceptional sound-insulation performance. After comprehensive research, it is observed that in the frequency range of 20-1200 Hz, this acoustic metamaterial exhibits multiple sound-insulation peaks, showing a high overall sound-insulation quality. Specifically, the first sound-insulation peak is 26.3 Hz, with a bandwidth of 13 Hz and giving a transmission loss of 56.5 dB, showing excellent low-frequency sound-insulation performance. To further understand the low-frequency sound-insulation mechanism, this paper uses the equivalent model method to conduct an acoustic-electrical analogy, construct an equivalent model of the acoustic metamaterial, and delve into the sound-insulation mechanism at the first sound-insulation peak. To confirm the validity of the theoretical calculations, physical experiments are carried out by 3D printing experimental samples. The analysis of the experimental data has yielded results that are consistent with the simulation data, providing empirical evidence for the accuracy of the theoretical model. The material has significant practical application value. Finally, various factors are studied in depth based on the established equivalent model, which can provide valuable insights for the design and practical engineering application of acoustic metamaterials.

Abstract:In practical engineering, noise and impact hazards are pervasive, indicating the pressing demand for materials that can absorb both sound and stress wave energy simultaneously. However, the rational design of such multifunctional materials remains a challenge. Herein, inspired by cuttlebone, we present bioinspired architected metamaterials with unprecedented sound-absorbing and mechanical properties engineered via a weakly-coupled design. The acoustic elements feature heterogeneous multilayered resonators, whereas the mechanical responses are based on asymmetric cambered cell walls. These metamaterials experimentally demonstrated an average absorption coefficient of 0.80 from 1.0 to 6.0 kHz, with 77% of the data points exceeding the desired 0.75 threshold, all with a compact 21 mm thickness. An absorptance-thickness map is devised for assessing the sound-absorption efficiency. The high-fidelity microstructure-based model reveals the air friction damping mechanism, with broadband behavior attributed to multimodal hybrid resonance. Empowered by the cambered design of cell walls, metamaterials shift catastrophic failure toward a progressive deformation mode characterized by stable stress plateaus and ultrahigh specific energy absorption of 50.7 J/g—a 558.4% increase over the straight-wall design. After the deformation mechanisms are elucidated, a comprehensive research framework for burgeoning acousto-mechanical metamaterials is proposed. Overall, our study broadens the horizon for multifunctional material design.
