Abstract:This work proposes a new positioning method based on multiple ultrasonic sensors for the autonomous mobile robot. Unlike the conventional ultrasonic positioning methods, this new method can realize higher accuracy ultrasonic positioning without additional temperature information. Three ultrasonic sensors are used for positioning. A generalized measurement model is established for general sensor configuration. A simplified measurement model, which considers the computational complexity, is also established for linear/simplified sensor configuration. Three time-of-flight signals are obtained from the three ultrasonic sensors. The coordinates of the target are calculated by the ratios of time-of-flights. Positioning experiments were carried out to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. Experimental results show that the new ultrasonic positioning method is effective, both the two established models can implement positioning successfully, and the positioning accuracy is satisfactory. Compared with the conventional ultrasonic positioning method with the default ultrasonic velocity, the positioning accuracy is greatly improved by the proposed method. Compared with the ultrasonic positioning method with additional temperature compensation, the results obtained by the proposed method are comparable.
An Improved Scheme for High-Resolution Point Cloud Map Generation Based on FMCW Radar

Abstract:For the frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar, the angle resolution of the generated point cloud map (PCM) is limited by both the number of receiver antennas and the interference of multi-target environments. This paper proposes an improved scheme for high-resolution PCM generation based on a 77 GHz FMCW radar system. The scheme consists of a method to synthesize an equivalent virtual array based on the time-division multiplexing (TDM) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique and an improved target detection algorithm based on multi-channel fusion. The results show that the proposed scheme could suppress the noise floor and improve the accuracy of target detection by 1.33 times compared to a conventional constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector in a multi-target environment. Moreover, by applying the proposed scheme, the angle resolution of the PCM generated by the radar system reaches to 1.3022 degrees.

Abstract:This article focuses on the challenge of pedestrian tracking using camera and millimeter wave (MMW) radar in autonomous driving. Pedestrian tracking using a single sensor has inherent limitations due to the lack of comprehensive dimensionality of tracking information. Meanwhile, the existing multisensor-based tracking algorithms suffer from limited tracking accuracy by applying the fusion of projected positions. To enhance the tracking accuracy and robustness, a multisensor-based tracking algorithm based on fused detection of MMW radar and vision is proposed, which improves the association of detection results from multiple heterogeneous sensors by utilizing newly designed back-projection and undirected graph, and finally improves the fusion detection by simultaneously utilizing a pedestrian’s appearance, and local and global location information. Field tests are conducted to produce dataset, and the performance evaluation results based on the self-produced dataset have verified the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the conventional single-sensor-based tracking algorithm and multisensor-based tracking algorithms.

Abstract:The invention discloses a method for improving MIMO radar angle resolution and a target positioning method. According to the method, an MIMO radar forms an equivalent virtual receiving antenna array by reasonably arranging a transmitting antenna and a receiving antenna, phase shift is carried out on the receiving antenna and a transmitting antenna feed circuit by utilizing the phase difference ofa virtual receiving channel, and the position of a target is accurately judged in combination with the change of a view field range. According to the invention, on the basis of the MIMO radar equivalent virtual antenna array, the angular resolution of the radar is further improved; therefore, the number of the receiving antennas and the number of the transmitting antennas are reduced, the technical barrier that the radar angle resolution is improved by means of cascading complex hardware circuits is broken through, and the problems that high-angle-resolution radar hardware is complex in structure, large in size, high in power consumption, high in cost and the like are fundamentally solved.
Online Multi-Object Tracking from A Bird's-Eye View by Fusion of Millimeter-Wave Radar and Vision

Abstract:Multi-Object Tracking (MOT) is an important approach to perceive the surrounding environment and plays the key role in ensuring driving safety in the field of autonomous driving. However, existing MOT algorithms are facing challenges arising from the underutilization of sensor information, the neglect of sensor reliability, and the inability to effectively handle lost trajectories. This paper proposes a multi-sensor fusion algorithm based on millimeter-wave radar and visual sensor for MOT, which utilizes the average height of objects to back-project the image bounding boxes onto the bird's eye view plane. Appearance features and motion orientations are then used to expand the similarity measure between targets, adopting a multi-level data association method based on object fusion states to improve association accuracy. This also utilizes occlusion prediction and recovery methods to recover lost trajectories. For the performance evaluation, an urban environment dataset containing twenty sequences is collected through extensive experiments. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms both the single-sensor tracking algorithm and traditional multi-sensor fusion tracking algorithm, in terms of tracking accuracy and robustness.

Abstract:Target positioning has always been a hot research topic in the field of sensors. In recent years, radar detection technology has become increasingly mature, resulting in a large number of radar sensors have begun to be used in traffic, security, medical and other fields for target detection. This paper mainly studies the super-resolution localization problem of FMCW FMCW in moving scenes. It analyzes the echo data by mathematical modeling to obtain the distance and angle information of the object to find the place of the object. To restore the motion trajectory of objects more realistically and achieve super-resolution positioning, a super-resolution radar positioning model based on Kriging interpolation based on the Fourier spectrum is established. By constructing a frame of intermediate frequency data Fourier spectrum tensor space, Fourier spectrum analysis is used to obtain the spectral characteristics of spatiotemporal changes when objects move. The Fourier spectrum surface is reasonably predicted through the statistical method - kriging interpolation. More Fourier spectrum information of objects in the time dimension can be obtained, and then more object points can be restored to achieve super-resolution positioning. This is widely used in the automotive field, which develops autonomous driving systems to help drivers better control the vehicle and reduce the probability of car accidents.

Abstract:Frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar can precisely detect moving objects utilizing the Doppler information. However, only exploiting the Doppler information in one frame can usually lead to object false detection when static background has large radar cross section or the moving objective occludes some static background. In this paper, we investigate the moving objective detection problem with FMCW radar through utilizing the Doppler information in multiple frames to increase objective detection accuracy. To solve this problem, an online tensor robust principal component analysis (RPCA) algorithm is proposed with low hardware and computation complexity. The proposed algorithm can maintain the intrinsic tensor data structure. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can accurately detect the static background and moving object even for the case of occlusion or static object with large RCS.

Abstract:Frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) based millimeter wave (MMW) radar systems have found widespread applications in advanced driving assistant system recently. MMW radar has clear superiority in many aspects, such as excellent range resolution, adaptability to various environments and low cost. However, its fatal weakness is the poor angular resolution which is very important in automotive radar applications. This shortcoming can be overcome by using a physically large aperture. However, achieving moderate angular resolution requires an array that is too large to be practically integrated into a vehicle. In this paper, a high resolution direction of arrival (DOA) approach is proposed by utilizing the relative motion between radar and targets, and a very large virtual aperture can be created by combining the signal vectors from multiple consecutive coherent processing intervals (CPIs). It should be pointed out that, the proposed approach is applicable for both stationary and moving targets even without motion data of vehicles. Therefore, it is completely different from the synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The effectiveness is verified by both simulation results and the measurement data. It is demonstrated that the angular resolution can be superior to 1° by a linear array consisting of only 4 elements.

Method for Improving Range Resolution of Indoor FMCW Radar Systems Using DNN

Abstract:Various studies on object detection are being conducted, and in this regard, research on frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) RADAR is being actively conducted. FMCW RADAR requires high-distance resolution to accurately detect objects. However, if the distance resolution is high, a high-modulation bandwidth is required, which has a prohibitively high cost. To address this issue, we propose a two-step algorithm to detect the location of an object through DNN using many low-cost FMCW RADARs. The algorithm first infers the sector by measuring the distance to the object for each FMCW RADAR and then measures the position through the grid according to the inferred sector. This improves the distance resolution beyond the modulation bandwidth. Additionally, to detect multiple targets, we propose a Gaussian filter. Multiple targets are detected through an ordered-statistic constant false-alarm rate (OS-CFAR), and there is an 11% probability that multiple targets cannot be detected. In the lattice structure proposed in this paper, the performance of the proposed algorithm compared to those in existing works was confirmed with respect to the cost function. The difference in performance versus complexity was also confirmed when the proposed algorithm had the same complexity and the same performance, and it was confirmed that there was a performance improvement of up to five-fold compared to those in previous papers. In addition, multi-target detection was shown in this paper. Through MATLAB simulation and actual measurement on a single target, RMSEs were 0.3542 and 0.41002 m, respectively, and through MATLAB simulation and actual measurement on multiple targets, RMSEs were confirmed to be 0.548265 and 0.762542 m, respectively. Through this, it was confirmed that this algorithm works in real RADAR.

Abstract:With the rapid development of robotics and sensor technology, indoor mobile robots have become important in the field of robotics, so it is especially important to study the positioning methods of mobile robots. In this paper, we first analyze the bottlenecks of indoor mobile robots and the localization problems that need to be solved; then, we design an online low-complexity algorithm for super-resolution localization using one frame of IF signal to address the shortcomings of localization technology, and verify the performance of the algorithm through numerical experiments. The relative motion trajectory of the object is calculated for one frame of data provided. The orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm requires a pseudo-inverse of the matrix, and the dictionary needs to be very large to ensure the reconstruction accuracy, resulting in a high complexity of matrix operations. To reduce the complexity, the most direct way is to reduce the size of the dictionary matrix, which can use the information of the previous frame to estimate the distance and angle range of the possible target in the next frame. Finally, the discrete data points are then linked together in a data association manner. Simulation results show that the proposed method has significant improvement in the probability of target detection as well as localization accuracy.

Abstract:Without relative motion or beam scanning, orbital-angular-momentum (OAM)-based radar is shown to be able to estimate azimuth of targets, which opens a new perspective for traditional radar techniques. However, the existing application of two-dimensional (2-D) fast Fourier transform (FFT) and multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithms in OAM-based radar targets detection doesn't realize 2-D super-resolution and robust estimation. Therefore, in this paper we propose a 2-D OAM radar targets detection method based on estimating signal parameter via rotational invariance (ESPRIT) algorithm. Our analysis and simulation results validate that OAM-based radar could achieve robust 2-D super-resolution imaging.
Cooperative Multi-Point Vehicular Positioning Using Millimeter-Wave Surface Reflection (Extended version)

Abstract:Multi-point vehicular positioning is one essential operation for autonomous vehicles. However, the state-of-the-art positioning technologies, relying on reflected signals from a target (i.e., RADAR and LIDAR), cannot work without line-of-sight. Besides, it takes significant time for environment scanning and object recognition with potential detection inaccuracy, especially in complex urban situations. Some recent fatal accidents involving autonomous vehicles further expose such limitations. In this paper, we aim at overcoming these limitations by proposing a novel relative positioning approach, called Cooperative Multi-point Positioning (COMPOP). The COMPOP establishes cooperation between a target vehicle (TV) and a sensing vehicle (SV) if a LoS path exists, where a TV explicitly lets an SV to know the TV's existence by transmitting positioning waveforms. This cooperation makes it possible to remove the time-consuming scanning and target recognizing processes, facilitating real-time positioning. One prerequisite for the cooperation is a clock synchronization between a pair of TV and SV. To this end, we use a phase-differential-of-arrival based approach to remove the TV-SV clock difference from the received signal. With clock difference correction, the TV's position can be obtained via peak detection over a 3D power spectrum constructed by a Fourier transform (FT) based algorithm. The COMPOP also incorporates nearby vehicles, without knowing their locations, into the above cooperation for the case without a LoS path. The effectiveness of the COMPOP is verified by several simulations concerning practical channel parameters.

Abstract:In this paper, a context-based human target detection and position estimation algorithm as well as a position calibration algorithm based on radar irradiation angle are proposed to improve the positioning accuracy which is limited by the sparse and easily submerged characteristics of point cloud generated by millimeter-wave radar that leads to the difficulty in achieving high-precision positioning. Furthermore, an indoor target positioning and tracking system is built using 77 GHz millimeter-wave radar to verify the proposed algorithms. The experiment results indicate that the proposed algorithms can improve the positioning accuracy both in the single-person and multi-person positioning scenarios, with the median positioning errors 8.7 cm (36.7% decrease) and 12.95 cm (average) respectively. Therefore, the proposed sensing method is considered as a very promising technique for designing high precision human trajectory tracking and positioning radar system.

Abstract:We studied a target tracking algorithm based on millimeter-wave (MMW) radar in an autonomous driving environment. Aiming at the cluster matching in the target tracking stage, a new weighted feature similarity algorithm is proposed, which increases the matching rate of the same target in adjacent frames under strong environmental noise and multiple interference targets. For autonomous driving scenarios, we constructed a method that uses its motion parameters to extract and correct the trajectory of a moving target, which solves the problem of moving target detection and trajectory correction during vehicle movement. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed method was verified by a series of experiments in autonomous driving environments. The results verify the high recognition accuracy and low positional error of the method.
3D high-resolution imaging algorithm using 1D MIMO array for autonomous driving application

Abstract:The problem of 3D high-resolution imaging in automotive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) side-looking radar using a 1D array is considered. The concept of motion-enhanced snapshots is introduced for generating larger apertures in the azimuth dimension. For the first time, 3D imaging capabilities can be achieved with high angular resolution using a 1D MIMO antenna array, which can alleviate the requirement for large radar systems in autonomous vehicles. The robustness to variations in the vehicle's movement trajectory is also considered and addressed with relevant compensations in the steering vector. The available degrees of freedom as well as the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) are shown to increase with the proposed method compared to conventional imaging approaches. The performance of the algorithm has been studied in simulations, and validated with experimental data collected in a realistic driving scenario.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) radars are able to estimate the azimuth angle and the rotation velocity of multiple targets without relative motion or beam scanning. Moreover, OAM wireless communications can achieve high spectral efficiency (SE) by utilizing a set of information-bearing modes on the same frequency channel. Benefitting from the above advantages, in this paper, we design a novel radar-centric joint OAM radar-communication (RadCom) scheme based on uniform circular arrays (UCAs), which modulates information signals on the existing OAM radar waveform. In details, we first propose an OAM-based three-dimensional (3-D) super-resolution position estimation and rotation velocity detection method, which can accurately estimate the 3-D position and rotation velocity of multiple targets without beam scanning. Then, we derive the posterior Cramér-Rao bound (PCRB) of the OAM-based estimates and, finally, we analyze SE of the integrated system. To achieve the best trade-off between imaging and communication, the transmitted integrated OAM beams are optimized by means of an exhaustive search method. Both mathematical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed radar-centric joint OAM RadCom scheme can accurately estimate the 3-D position and rotation velocity of multiple targets while ensuring the SE of the communication receiver, which can be regarded as an effective supplement to existing joint RadCom schemes.

Abstract:As a key sensor for Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS), millimeter automotive radar has been a promising candidate for fulfilling tasks including adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance. However, the widely deployment of millimeter automotive radars may cause serious mutual interference among vehicles, thus degrading radar ranging performance severely. In this article, we analyze the mutual interference among multiple Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radars. On one hand, we model the interference precisely by employing Matern Hard-Core Process (MHCP) model to characterize the distribution of vehicle nodes in practical bidirectional two-lane and multi-lane scenarios. Besides, the interference is analyzed in terms of the channel fading, the directional antenna pattern and the fluctuation of the target Radar Cross-Section (RCS) in two-lane and multi-lane scenarios. Besides, we analyze the reflected interference in detail. On the other hand, we evaluate the interference mitigation performance of the Random Frequency Division Multiplexing (RFDM) and Frequency Hopping (FH) approaches in terms of the probability of false detection and miss detection, effective detectable density and maximum number of interference-free radar. Finally, a novel AFH-PM mitigation approach is proposed to further improve the interference mitigation performance, which combines the adaptive FH technology with the binary phase modulation. Simulation results verify the proposed framework for interference analysis by employing Monte Carlo method, and the performance improvement of RFDM, FH and AFH-PM is 6.7 dB, 7.6 dB and 8.2 dB, respectively.

Road and vehicle detection in highway scene for automotive FMCW antenna array radar

Abstract:This paper deals with the road and vehicle detection problem in highway scene for automotive radar which uses frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) signals and antenna array. Due to the automotive radaru0027s low angle resolution, targets such as guardrails on road edge interfere with the vehicle detection and bring difficulties to the distance-velocity decoupling. We proposed an approach with Hough transformation and image matching for the road and vehicle detection. The interference of outroad targets is suppressed and the decoupling is achieved with low complexity. Specially, based on the road boundary model, the road boundary can be achieved by a curve Hough transform. Then, the on-road vehicles are detected and the distance-velocity decoupling can be solved by target region image matching with a total variation minimization method. Our new algorithm has a low computational complexity, and is validated by field experimental results.

Abstract:Frequency modulation continuous wave (FMCW) radar has been paid much attention in forward-looking navigation applications because of its no-blind-range capability. However, after dechirp processing, pulse interference signals may appear in the range time domain, which seriously pollutes the whole radiation direction. In this article, a cross-domain low-rank and sparse (CD-LRS) optimization framework is proposed to enhance the angular resolution and suppress the pulse interference signals based on the scanning mode of its antenna. On the one hand, to cut off and recover the polluted signals, a low-rank spectra reconstruction approach is proposed by utilizing the low-rank characteristic of the Hankel matrix formed by the interference-rejected data in the range time domain. On the other hand, to suppress the residual interference signal and enhance the angular resolution simultaneously, an adaptive sparse reconstruction method is formed in the azimuthal time domain by adopting an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMMs)-based solver. Compared with the traditional anti-interference methods, the proposed framework can enhance the angular resolution and suppress the interference signals based on the signal features in different domains. Simulations and experimental results are applied to verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework.
