Abstract:The particle swarm optimization method in conjunction with density functional calculations is used to search the lower energy structures for the cationic water clusters (H2O)5(+). Geometry optimization, vibrational analysis, and infrared spectrum calculation are performed for the most interesting clusters at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level. The relationships between their structural arrangements and their energies are discussed. According to their relative Gibbs free energies, their energy order is determined and four lowest energy isomers are found to have a relative population surpassing 1% below 350 K. Studies reveal that, among these four isomers, one new cluster found here also contributes a lot to the experimental infrared spectrum. Based on topological analysis and reduced density gradient analysis, some meaningful points are found by studying the structural characteristics and the bonding strengths of these cationic water clusters: in the first solvation shell, the central H3O(+) motifs may have a stronger interaction with the OH radical than with the water molecules. The interaction in the second solvation shell may also be stronger than that in the first solvation shell, which is opposite to our intuition.

Abstract:Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) has become established as an indispensable tool for investigating aqueous systems of all kinds, including those important in chemistry, surface science, biology and the earth sciences. Nevertheless, many widely used approximations for the exchange-correlation (XC) functional describe the properties of pure water systems with an accuracy that is not fully satisfactory. The explicit inclusion of dispersion interactions generally improves the description, but there remain large disagreements between the predictions of different dispersion-inclusive methods. We present here a review of DFT work on water clusters, ice structures and liquid water, with the aim of elucidating how the strengths and weaknesses of different XC approximations manifest themselves across this variety of water systems. Our review highlights the crucial role of dispersion in describing the delicate balance between compact and extended structures of many different water systems, including the liquid. By referring to a wide range of published work, we argue that the correct description of exchange-overlap interactions is also extremely important, so that the choice of semi-local or hybrid functional employed in dispersion-inclusive methods is crucial. The origins and consequences of beyond-2-body errors of approximate XC functionals are noted, and we also discuss the substantial differences between different representations of dispersion. We propose a simple numerical scoring system that rates the performance of different XC functionals in describing water systems, and we suggest possible future developments.

Abstract:We present a list of optimized damping range parameters $s_R$ to be used with the Tkatchenko-Scheffler van der Waals dispersion-correction scheme [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 073005 (2009)]. The optimal $s_R$ are obtained for seven popular generalized-gradient approximation exchange-correlation density functionals: PBE, RPBE, revPBE, PBEsol, BLYP, AM05 and PW91. The optimization is carried out in the standard way by minimizing the mean absolute error of the S22 test set, where the reference interaction energies are taken from coupled-cluster calculations. With the optimized range parameters, we assess the impact of van der Waals corrections on the ability of these functionals to accurately describe structural and thermodynamic properties of liquid water: radial distribution functions, self-diffusion coefficients and standard molar entropies.

The individual and collective effects of exact exchange and dispersion interactions on the ab initio structure of liquid water

Abstract:In this work, we report the results of a series of density functional theory (DFT) based ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of ambient liquid water using a hierarchy of exchange-correlation (XC) functionals to investigate the individual and collective effects of exact exchange (Exx), via the PBE0 hybrid functional, non-local van der Waals/dispersion (vdW) interactions, via a fully self-consistent density-dependent dispersion correction, and an approximate treatment of nuclear quantum effects, via a 30 K increase in the simulation temperature, on the microscopic structure of liquid water. Based on these AIMD simulations, we found that the collective inclusion of Exx and vdW as resulting from a large-scale AIMD simulation of (H2O)128 significantly softens the structure of ambient liquid water and yields an oxygen-oxygen structure factor, SOO(Q), and corresponding oxygen-oxygen radial distribution function, gOO(r), that are now in quantitative agreement with the best available experimental data. This level of agreement between simulation and experiment demonstrated herein originates from an increase in the relative population of water molecules in the interstitial region between the first and second coordination shells, a collective reorganization in the liquid phase which is facilitated by a weakening of the hydrogen bond strength by the use of a hybrid XC functional, coupled with a relative stabilization of the resultant disordered liquid water configurations by the inclusion of non-local vdW/dispersion interactions. This increasingly more accurate description of the underlying hydrogen bond network in liquid water also yields higher-order correlation functions, such as the oxygen-oxygen-oxygen triplet angular distribution, POOO(θ), and therefore the degree of local tetrahedrality, as well as electrostatic properties, such as the effective molecular dipole moment, that are in much better agreement with experiment.

How does HF-DFT achieve chemical accuracy for water clusters?

Abstract:Bolstered by recent calculations of exact functional-driven errors (FEs) and density-driven errors (DEs) of semi-local density functionals in the water dimer binding energy [Kanungo et al., J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2023, 15, 323], we investigate approximate FEs and DEs in neutral water clusters containing up to 20 monomers, charged water clusters, and alkali- and halide-water clusters. Our proxy for the exact density is r2SCAN50, a 50% global hybrid of exact exchange with r2SCAN, which may be less correct than r2SCAN for the compact water monomer but importantly more correct for long-range electron transfers in the non-compact water clusters. We show that SCAN makes substantially larger FEs for neutral water clusters than r2SCAN, while both make essentially the same DEs. Unlike the case for barrier heights, these FEs are small in a relative sense, and become large in an absolute sense only due to an increase in cluster size. SCAN@HF produces a cancellation of errors that makes it chemically accurate for predicting the absolute binding energies of water clusters. Likewise, adding a long-range dispersion correction to r2SCAN@HF, as in the composite method HF-r2SCAN-DC4, makes its FE more negative than in r2SCAN@HF, permitting a near-perfect cancellation of FE and DE. r2SCAN by itself (and even more so, r2SCAN evaluated on the r2SCAN50 density), is almost perfect for the energy differences between water hexamers, and thus probably also for liquid water away from the boiling point. Thus the accuracy of composite methods like SCAN@HF and HF-r2SCAN-DC4 is not due to the HF density being closer to the exact density, but to a compensation of errors from its greater degree of localization. We also give an argument for the approximate reliability of this unconventional error cancellation for diverse molecular properties. Finally, we confirm this unconventional error cancellation for the SCAN description of the water trimer via Kohn-Sham inversion of the CCSD(T) density.

Smoother Semiclassical Dispersion for Density Functional Theory via D3S: Understanding and Addressing Unphysical Minima in the D3 Dispersion Correction Model

Abstract:One of the most widely used and computationally efficient models that accounts for London dispersion interactions within density functional theory (DFT) is the D3 dispersion correction model. In this work, we demonstrate that this model can induce the appearance of unphysical minima on the potential energy surface (PES) when the coordination number of atoms changes. Optimizing to these artifactual structures can lead to significant errors in determining the interaction energy between two molecules and in estimating the thermodynamic properties of the system. In several specific examples, such as Kuratowski-type H2-NiKur and H2-PdKur clusters, these local minima exhibited extremely high PES curvature, resulting in incorrect estimations of harmonic frequencies and significant overestimations of zero-point energy and enthalpy values. Although such erroneous behavior of the D3 model is relatively rare, it can occur across a wide range of chemical species, including molecules like the [Li(C6H6)]+ complex and the dispiro(acridan)-substituted pyracene (DSAP) molecule. Our analysis reveals that the root of the problem lies in the definition of the AB atomic-pair dependent C6AB coefficients in the D3 model. To address this issue, we propose a re-parameterization of the D3 model by introducing a modified C6AB functional form that now depends on the specific pair of considered atoms. This new model, termed D3-Smooth (or D3S for short), is designed to smooth out the PES associated with the dispersion correction. By doing so, we demonstrate that D3S eliminates unphysical local minima while maintaining the quite satisfactory accuracy of the parent D3 method in interaction energy benchmark sets. For example, the RMS difference between using the D3(BJ) correction to B3LYP and the D3S(BJ) correction across the large MGCDB84 dataset of nearly 5000 data points is only 0.12 kJ/mol. Similar results are obtained for every other D3-corrected functional tested. Consistent with this result, no significant improvement could be obtained for the B3LYP-D3S(0) correction by reoptimizing the damping function.

Dispersion- and Exchange-Corrected Density Functional Theory for Sodium Ion Hydration

Abstract:A challenge in density functional theory is developing functionals that simultaneously describe intermolecular electron correlation and electron delocalization. Recent exchange-correlation functionals address those two issues by adding corrections important at long ranges: an atom-centered pairwise dispersion term to account for correlation and a modified long-range component of the electron exchange term to correct for delocalization. Here we investigate how those corrections influence the accuracy of binding free energy predictions for sodium-water clusters. We find that the dual-corrected ωB97X-D functional gives cluster binding energies closest to high-level ab initio methods (CCSD(T)). Binding energy decomposition shows that the ωB97X-D functional predicts the smallest ion-water (pairwise) interaction energy and larger multibody contributions for a four-water cluster than most other functionals - a trend consistent with CCSD(T) results. Also, ωB97X-D produces the smallest amounts of charge transfer and the least polarizable waters of the density functionals studied, which mimics the lower polarizability of CCSD. When compared with experimental binding free energies, however, the exchange-corrected CAM-B3LYP functional performs best (error <1 kcal/mol), possibly because of its parametrization to experimental formation enthalpies. For clusters containing more than four waters, "split-shell" coordination must be considered to obtain accurate free energies in comparison with experiment.
Consistent Density Functional Theory-Based Description of Ion Hydration Through Density-Corrected Many-Body Representations

Abstract:Delocalization error constrains the accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) in describing molecular interactions in ion–water systems. Using Na+ and Cl− in water as model systems, we calculate the effects of delocalization error in the SCAN functional for describing ion–water and water–water interactions in hydrated ions, and demonstrate that density-corrected SCAN (DC-SCAN) predicts n-body and interaction energies with an accuracy approaching coupled cluster theory. The performance of DC-SCAN is size-consistent, maintaining an accurate description of molecular in- teractions well beyond the first solvation shell. Molecular dynamics simulations at ambient conditions with MB-SCAN(DC) potentials, derived from the many-body expansion, predict the solvation structure of Na+ and Cl− in quantitative agreement with reference data, while simultaneously reproducing the structure of liquid water. Beyond rationalizing the accuracy of density-corrected models of ion hydration, our findings suggest that our unified density-corrected many-body formalism holds great promise for efficient DFT-based simulations of condensed-phase systems with chemical accuracy.

Coupled cluster benchmarks of water monomers and dimers extracted from DFT liquid water: the importance of monomer deformations

Abstract:To understand the performance of popular density-functional theory (DFT) exchange-correlation (xc) functionals in simulations of liquid water, water monomers and dimers were extracted from a PBE simulation of liquid water and examined with coupled cluster with single and double excitations plus a perturbative correction for connected triples [CCSD(T)]. CCSD(T) reveals that most of the dimers are unbound compared to two gas phase equilibrium water monomers, largely because monomers within the liquid have distorted geometries. Of the three xc functionals tested, PBE and BLYP systematically underestimate the cost of the monomer deformations and consequently predict too large dissociation energies between monomers within the dimers. This is in marked contrast to how these functionals perform for an equilibrium water dimer and other small water clusters in the gas phase, which only have moderately deformed monomers. PBE0 reproduces the CCSD(T) monomer deformation energies very well and consequently the dimer dissociation energies much more accurately than PBE and BLYP. Although this study is limited to water monomers and dimers, the results reported here may provide an explanation for the overstructured radial distribution functions routinely observed in BLYP and PBE simulations of liquid water and are of relevance to water in other phases and to other associated molecular liquids.

Abstract:Accurate description of the excess charge in water cluster anions is challenging for standard semi-local and (global) hybrid density functional approximations (DFAs). Using the recent unitary invariant implementation of the Perdew-Zunger self-interaction correction (SIC) method using Fermi-L\"owdin orbitals, we assess the effect of self-interaction error on the vertical detachment energies of water clusters anions with the local spin density approximation (LSDA), Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) generalized gradient approximation, and the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA functionals. Our results show that for the relative energies of isomers with respect to reference CCSD(T) values, the uncorrected SCAN functional has the smallest deviation of 21 meV, better than that for the MP2 method. The performance of SIC-SCAN is comparable to that of MP2 and is better than SIC-LSDA and SIC-PBE, but it reverses the ordering of the two lowest isomers for water hexamer anions. Removing self interaction error (SIE) corrects the tendency of LSDA, PBE, and SCAN to over-bind the extra electron. The vertical detachment energies (VDEs) of water cluster anions, obtained from the total energy differences of corresponding anion and neutral clusters, are significantly improved by removing self-interaction and are better than the hybrid B3LYP functional, but fall short of MP2 accuracy. Removing SIE results in substantial improvement in the position of the eigenvalue of the extra electron. The negative of the highest occupied eigenvalue after SIC provides an excellent approximation to the VDE, especially for SIC-PBE where the mean absolute error with respect to CCSD(T) is only 17 meV, the best among all approximations compared in this work.

Abstract:In this work, we assess the accuracy of dielectric-dependent hybrid density functionals and many-body perturbation theory methods for the calculation of electron affinities of small water clusters, including hydrogen-bonded water dimer and water hexamer isomers. We show that many-body perturbation theory in the G$_0$W$_0$ approximation starting with the dielectric-dependent hybrid functionals predicts electron affinities of clusters within 0.1 eV of the coupled-cluster results with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations.

Abstract:Due to their current and future technological applications, including realization of water filters and desalination membranes, water adsorption on graphitic sp2-bonded carbon is of overwhelming interest. However, these systems are notoriously challenging to model, even for electronic structure methods such as density functional theory (DFT), because of the crucial role played by London dispersion forces and noncovalent interactions, in general. Recent efforts have established reference quality interactions of several carbon nanostructures interacting with water. Here, we compile a new benchmark set (dubbed WaC18), which includes a single water molecule interacting with a broad range of carbon structures and various bulk (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) ice polymorphs. The performance of 28 approaches, including semilocal exchange-correlation functionals, nonlocal (Fock) exchange contributions, and long-range van der Waals (vdW) treatments, is tested by computing the deviations from the reference interaction energies. The calculated mean absolute deviations on the WaC18 set depend crucially on the DFT approach, ranging from 135 meV for local density approximation (LDA) to 12 meV for PBE0-D4. We find that modern vdW corrections to DFT significantly improve over their precursors. Within the 28 tested approaches, we identify the best performing within the functional classes of generalized gradient approximated (GGA), meta-GGA, vdW-DF, and hybrid DF, which are BLYP-D4, TPSS-D4, rev-vdW-DF2, and PBE0-D4, respectively.

Abstract:We have implemented a cluster-continuum method using density functional theory to model water clusters and various charged species derived from water. The two aims of this study are to determine the minimal basis required for proper modeling of water autoionization and to determine the minimum number of explicit water molecules required to properly model the energetics of solvation. The thermodynamics of water autoionization converge following a modified power law to deliver chemically accurate values of the Gibbs energy change for autoionization with tractably small clusters. Convergence is slower and not exponential as assumed in previous work. We identify the n = 21 set of clusters as the first effectively bulk water like clusters that can capture the energetic influence of both the first and second solvation shells. In this cluster, a water molecule is encapsulated in the center of a closed shell of other water molecules that hydrogen bond to form five-membered rings. The total energy change for clusters with n ≥ 21 calculated using both the RPBE-D3 and ωB97X-D exchange–correlation functionals with the 6-311+G** basis set is shown to deliver good approximations to the free energy change at 298 K. This is true even though neither functional models the individual enthalpy or entropy contributions particularly well.

Optimization of an exchange-correlation density functional for water

Abstract:We describe a method, that we call data projection onto parameter space (DPPS), to optimize an energy functional of the electron density, so that it reproduces a dataset of experimental magnitudes. Our scheme, based on Bayes theorem, constrains the optimized functional not to depart unphysically from existing ab initio functionals. The resulting functional maximizes the probability of being the \correct" parametrization of a given functional form, in the sense of Bayes theory. The application of DPPS to water sheds new light on why density functional theory has performed rather poorly for liquid water, on what improvements are needed, and on the intrinsic limitations of the generalized gradient approximation to electron exchange and correlation. Finally, we present tests of our water-optimized functional, that we call vdW-DF-w, showing that it performs very well for a variety of condensed water systems.

What Types of Chemical Problems Benefit from Density-Corrected DFT? A Probe Using an Extensive and Chemically Diverse Test Suite

Abstract:For the large and chemically diverse GMTKN55 benchmark suite, we have studied the performance of density-corrected density functional theory (HF-DFT), compared to self-consistent DFT, for several pure and hybrid GGA and meta-GGA exchange–correlation (XC) functionals (PBE, BLYP, TPSS, and SCAN) as a function of the percentage of HF exchange in the hybrid. The D4 empirical dispersion correction has been added throughout. For subsets dominated by dynamical correlation, HF-DFT is highly beneficial, particularly at low HF exchange percentages. This is especially true for noncovalent interactions where the electrostatic component is dominant, such as hydrogen and halogen bonds: for π-stacking, HF-DFT is detrimental. For subsets with significant nondynamical correlation (i.e., where a Hartree–Fock determinant is not a good zero-order wavefunction), HF-DFT may do more harm than good. While the self-consistent series show optima at or near 37.5% (i.e., 3/8) for all four XC functionals—consistent with Grimme's proposal of the PBE38 functional—HF-BnLYP-D4, HF-PBEn-D4, and HF-TPSSn-D4 all exhibit minima nearer 25% (i.e., 1/4) as the use of HF orbitals greatly mitigates the error at 25% for barrier heights. Intriguingly, for HF-SCANn-D4, the minimum is near 10%, but the weighted mean absolute error (WTMAD2) for GMTKN55 is only barely lower than that for HF-SCAN-D4 (i.e., where the post-HF step is a pure meta-GGA). The latter becomes an attractive option, only slightly more costly than pure Hartree–Fock, and devoid of adjustable parameters other than the three in the dispersion correction. Moreover, its WTMAD2 is only surpassed by the highly empirical M06-2X and by the combinatorially optimized empirical range-separated hybrids ωB97X-V and ωB97M-V.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The method of dispersion correction as an add-on to standard Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT-D) has been refined regarding higher accuracy, broader range of applicability, and less empiricism. The main new ingredients are atom-pairwise specific dispersion coefficients and cutoff radii that are both computed from first principles. The coefficients for new eighth-order dispersion terms are computed using established recursion relations. System (geometry) dependent information is used for the first time in a DFT-D type approach by employing the new concept of fractional coordination numbers (CN). They are used to interpolate between dispersion coefficients of atoms in different chemical environments. The method only requires adjustment of two global parameters for each density functional, is asymptotically exact for a gas of weakly interacting neutral atoms, and easily allows the computation of atomic forces. Three-body nonadditivity terms are considered. The method has been assessed on standard benchmark sets for inter- and intramolecular noncovalent interactions with a particular emphasis on a consistent description of light and heavy element systems. The mean absolute deviations for the S22 benchmark set of noncovalent interactions for 11 standard density functionals decrease by 15%-40% compared to the previous (already accurate) DFT-D version. Spectacular improvements are found for a tripeptide-folding model and all tested metallic systems. The rectification of the long-range behavior and the use of more accurate C(6) coefficients also lead to a much better description of large (infinite) systems as shown for graphene sheets and the adsorption of benzene on an Ag(111) surface. For graphene it is found that the inclusion of three-body terms substantially (by about 10%) weakens the interlayer binding. We propose the revised DFT-D method as a general tool for the computation of the dispersion energy in molecules and solids of any kind with DFT and related (low-cost) electronic structure methods for large systems.

Abstract:The accurate representation of the structural and dynamical properties of water is essential for simulating the unique behavior of this ubiquitous solvent. Here we assess the current status of describing liquid water using ab initio molecular dynamics, with a special focus on the performance of all the later generation Minnesota functionals. Findings are contextualized within the current knowledge on DFT for describing bulk water under ambient conditions and compared to experimental data. We find that, contrary to the prevalent idea that local and semilocal functionals overstructure water and underestimate dynamical properties, M06-L, revM06-L, and M11-L understructure water, while MN12-L and MN15-L overdistance water molecules due to weak cohesive effects. This can be attributed to a weakening of the hydrogen bond network, which leads to dynamical fingerprints that are over fast. While most of the hybrid Minnesota functionals (M06, M08-HX, M08-SO, M11, MN12-SX, and MN15) also yield understructured water, their dynamical properties generally improve over their semilocal counterparts. It emerges that exact exchange is a crucial component for accurately describing hydrogen bonds, which ultimately leads to corrections in both the dynamical and structural properties. However, an excessive amount of exact exchange strengthens hydrogen bonds and causes overstructuring and slow dynamics (M06-HF). As a compromise, M06-2X is the best performing Minnesota functional for water, and its D3 corrected variant shows very good structural agreement. From previous studies considering nuclear quantum effects (NQEs), the hybrid revPBE0-D3, and the rung-5 RPA (RPA@PBE) have been identified as the only two approximations that closely agree with experiments. Our results suggest that the M06-2X(-D3) functionals have the potential to further improve the reproduction of experimental properties when incorporating NQEs through path integral approaches. This work provides further proof that accurate modeling of water interactions requires the inclusion of both exact exchange and balanced (non-local) correlation, highlighting the need for higher rungs on Jacob's ladder to achieve predictive simulations of complex biological systems in aqueous environments.

Density functional theory for van der Waals complexes: Size matters

Abstract:Over the past 25 years there has been remarkable progress towards accurate description of nonbonded interactions within the context of density functional theory (DFT). Various methods have been devised to capture London dispersion, which is the most exacting contribution to noncovalent interactions; these strategies include both new functionals as well as ad hoc dispersion corrections to existing functionals. At present, it is possible to compute interaction energies for small van der Waals complexes (containing ~20 atoms) to an accuracy of ~0.5 kcal/mol, using a range of dispersion-inclusive DFT methods that are reviewed here. Systematic tests reveal remarkable consistency across different methods, at least for small noncovalent dimers. At the same time, the magnitude of the ad hoc dispersion corrections are systematically smaller than benchmark dispersion energies because some dispersion resides within the semilocal exchange-correlation functional, in a manner that is difficult to disentangle. Despite impressive results for small systems, the best contemporary DFT methods afford larger errors in systems with >~ 100 atoms, approaching 3-5 kcal/mol as compared to ab initio benchmarks for total interaction energies, although the benchmarks themselves have larger uncertainties in systems of this size. Errors for larger systems vary widely from one DFT method to the next, with no discernible systematic trend. Nanoscale van der Waals complexes thus represent the new frontier in development of DFT for noncovalent interactions.

Improving intermolecular interactions in DFTB3 using extended polarization from chemical-potential equalization

Abstract:Semi-empirical quantum mechanical methods traditionally expand the electron density in a minimal, valence-only electron basis set. The minimal-basis approximation causes molecular polarization to be underestimated, and hence intermolecular interaction energies are also underestimated, especially for intermolecular interactions involving charged species. In this work, the third-order self-consistent charge density functional tight-binding method (DFTB3) is augmented with an auxiliary response density using the chemical-potential equalization (CPE) method and an empirical dispersion correction (D3). The parameters in the CPE and D3 models are fitted to high-level CCSD(T) reference interaction energies for a broad range of chemical species, as well as dipole moments calculated at the DFT level; the impact of including polarizabilities of molecules in the parameterization is also considered. Parameters for the elements H, C, N, O and S are presented. The RMSD interaction energy is improved from 6.07 kcal/mol to 1.49 kcal/mol for interactions with one charged specie, whereas the RMSD is improved from 5.60 kcal/mol to 1.73 for a set of 9 salt bridges, compared to uncorrected DFTB3. For large water clusters and complexes that are dominated by dispersion interactions, the already satisfactory performance of the DFTB3-D3 model is retained; polarizabilities of neutral molecules are also notably improved. Overall, the CPE extension of DFTB3-D3 provides a more balanced description of different types of non-covalent interactions than NDDO type of semi-empirical methods (e.g., PM6-D3H4) and PBE-D3 with modest basis sets.

Accurate description of van der Waals complexes by density functional theory including empirical corrections

Abstract:An empirical method to account for van der Waals interactions in practical calculations with the density functional theory (termed DFT-D) is tested for a wide variety of molecular complexes. As in previous schemes, the dispersive energy is described by damped interatomic potentials of the form C6R(-6). The use of pure, gradient-corrected density functionals (BLYP and PBE), together with the resolution-of-the-identity (RI) approximation for the Coulomb operator, allows very efficient computations for large systems. Opposed to previous work, extended AO basis sets of polarized TZV or QZV quality are employed, which reduces the basis set superposition error to a negligible extend. By using a global scaling factor for the atomic C6 coefficients, the functional dependence of the results could be strongly reduced. The "double counting" of correlation effects for strongly bound complexes is found to be insignificant if steep damping functions are employed. The method is applied to a total of 29 complexes of atoms and small molecules (Ne, CH4, NH3, H2O, CH3F, N2, F2, formic acid, ethene, and ethine) with each other and with benzene, to benzene, naphthalene, pyrene, and coronene dimers, the naphthalene trimer, coronene. H2O and four H-bonded and stacked DNA base pairs (AT and GC). In almost all cases, very good agreement with reliable theoretical or experimental results for binding energies and intermolecular distances is obtained. For stacked aromatic systems and the important base pairs, the DFT-D-BLYP model seems to be even superior to standard MP2 treatments that systematically overbind. The good results obtained suggest the approach as a practical tool to describe the properties of many important van der Waals systems in chemistry. Furthermore, the DFT-D data may either be used to calibrate much simpler (e.g., force-field) potentials or the optimized structures can be used as input for more accurate ab initio calculations of the interaction energies.
