Abstract:Objective: To review the characteristics of the injuries among CrossFit® practitioners, including prevalence and incidence, nature, location, and risk factors. Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, and SPORTDiscus databases were searched from inception through August 2020, and English-language articles reporting on CrossFit®-related injuries were included. Data including sample (sex, age, and demographics) and injuries' characteristics (prevalence, incidence rate, nature, location, percentage of injuries requiring surgery and risk factors) were extracted. Results: Overall, twenty-five studies involving a total of 12,079 CrossFit® practitioners met the inclusion criteria. The mean prevalence of injuries among the included studies was 35.3%, with an incidence rate varying between 0.2 and 18.9 per 1000 hours of training. The most injured areas were shoulder (26%), spine (24%), and knee (18%). Among the studies that reported the injuries requiring surgery, the mean percentage was 8.7%. Regarding the risk factors associated with injuries, older age, male sex, a greater body mass index, the existence of previous injuries, the lack of coach supervision, the experience on CrossFit® and the participation in competitions were reported by the studies. Conclusions: CrossFit® training has an injury incidence rate similar to weightlifting and powerlifting. Findings from the studies suggest that the most affected areas are shoulder, spine, and knee. The limited quality of the studies prevents us from drawing solid conclusions about injury risk factors.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: This study sought to determine prevalences of injuries associated with CrossFit® training and assess profiles of these injuries and the affected athletes.METHODS: Data were collected over a 12-month period using a questionnaire administered directly to practitioners at CrossFit®-affiliated fitness centers in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Of the 414 participants, 157 (37.9%) participants reported having suffered an injury while practicing CrossFit®.RESULTS: The injury rate was 3.24 injuries per 1,000 hours of training. The probability of injury for athletes who had practiced CrossFit® for longer than 12 months was 82.2%, which was higher than the corresponding probability for beginner athletes. The probability of injury was 5-fold higher among competitive-level athletes than that among less-experienced athletes. No evidence of an association between the occurrence of injuries during CrossFit® practice and any of the following athlete characteristics was found: age, gender, practice of other sports, weight, and height. The incidence of injuries in this sports modality was similar to that in other modalities, including Olympic weight lifting (OWL), basic weight lifting, and artistic gymnastics.CONCLUSION: CrossFit® appears to be a training program that is suitable for different age groups when performed in a safe environment and with assistance from qualified professionals.

Abstract:An approach to anomalies from anomalous vacuum expectation values is proposed. This method is useful to derive not only the conformal anomaly, the chiral anomaly, and the gravitational anomaly but also the supercurrent anomaly at one-loop order. Calculations are carried out for the N = 1 self-interacting Wess-Zumino model in flat space-time and for the N = 1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in graviton and gravitino background fields.
Risk Factors for Musculoskeletal Injury in CrossFit: A Systematic Review

Abstract:The objective of this systematic review was to identify potential risk factors for injury in CrossFit participants. Embase, Medline, Web of Science, Cochrane, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and SportDiscuss databases were all searched up to June 2021. Cohort studies that investigated risk factors for CrossFit injuries requiring medical attention or leading to time loss in sports were included. A best-evidence synthesis was performed combining all the outcomes from prospective cohort studies. From 9,452 publications identified, we included three prospective cohort studies from which two had a low risk of bias and one a high risk of bias. The studies examined 691 participants of whom 172 sustained an injury. There was limited evidence that switching between prescribed and scaled loads during training is associated with increased injury risk and that increased duration of participation is a protective factor for injury. This could mean that novice CrossFit athletes and those increasing their training load should have closer supervision by CrossFit coaches. These risk factors should be considered when developing preventive interventions. ‡ These authors contributed equally. Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of musculoskeletal injuries associated with CrossFit® practitioners and the relationship of this prevalence among those who concomitantly perform resistance training (RT). Methods: Cross-sectional study in which adult participants of both sexes were included, who answered a mixed morbidity questionnaire adapted. The participants were allocated into groups according to whether or not they practiced another modality along with CrossFit®, with emphasis on RT. Analytical and descriptive statistics procedures were used, with a statistical significance level of 5% (p<0.05). Results: A total of 179 participants were included in the study. Prevalences of musculoskeletal injuries were observed in the overall study sample of 32.4% and in those who perform CrossFit® with RT of 30.8%. The injury prevalence ratio for this group was 0.95, with lower injury prevalence for the upper limbs (p=0.03) and lower limbs (p=0.02). It is worth noting that 96% of the CrossFit® and RT practitioners did strength training focused only on the upper and/or lower limb musculatures, without specific training for the anatomical segment of the Core (lumbar and pelvis). Conclusion: RT associated with CrossFit® and covering all anatomical segments, can be considered a protective factor for the occurrence of musculoskeletal injuries in CrossFit®. Abstract:ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of injuries in CrossFit® practitioners and the influence of sports practice and demographic characteristics on these injuries. A retrospective cohort study was carried out with 180 CrossFit® practitioners who answered a questionnaire with demographic characteristics (age, body mass, height, and sex), sports characteristics (number of years practicing CrossFit®; training frequency, duration, and training program; and practice of other sports), and presence of any injury suffered and its characteristics (number of injuries, region, and type of injury). The Mann-Whitney U test investigated the difference in continuous variables between those with and without injury history. The chi-square test and Fisher’s exact test investigated the association between categorical variables and the presence or not of injury over the last year. The chi-square goodness-of-fit test investigated if the frequency of injuries per body location and type differed from the expected one. Injury prevalence was 63%. Participants with a history of injury showed a shorter time of CrossFit® practice. The presence of injury history was associated with lesser weekly and daily training frequency, shorter training duration, and Scale training program. The frequency of injuries on leg, knee, lumbar spine, shoulder, and wrist, and the muscle and tendon was greater than expected. The other variables were neither different between groups nor associated with injury presence. Thus, most participants presented injury over the last year, influenced by the sports characteristics but not by demographic characteristics.
Effects of an Injury Prevention Program in CrossFit Athletes: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Abstract The present study aimed to assess the effects of an injury prevention program in CrossFit athletes. Thirty-two CrossFit athletes were randomized to either an intervention group (n=16), that performed mobility and stability exercises during the warm-up of all CrossFit sessions for a 10-week period or to a control group (n=16) that kept performing their usual warm-up. Incidence of injuries (primary outcome) as well as average training loads, fatigue and pain perception were registered during the study. The overall injury incidence rate was 0.04 per 1000 training hours, with no differences between groups (p>0.05). Similarly, no between-group differences were found for injury severity, nor for average training volume, intensity, training load, pain, or fatigue perception during the study (all p>0.05 with trivial-to-small effect sizes). In summary, a 10-week injury prevention program consisting of stability and mobility exercises provided no benefits on injury rates, fatigue and pain perception in recreational CrossFit athletes. Further research might corroborate the preliminary evidence reported here.

From Sweat to Strain: An Epidemiological Analysis of Training-Related Injuries in CrossFit®

Abstract:Purpose: This study aims to conduct an epidemiological investigation into the types and causes of injuries during CrossFit® training in Germany. Patients and methods: Voluntary athletes from various German CrossFit® gyms participated, providing personal information, training habits, and details on injuries through a standardized questionnaire. Results: The study involved 308 participants, with an equal sex split, a peak age of 20-40, and a BMI of 24.3 ± 3.3 kg/m2. Most participants trained for over two years (49.4%), primarily in supervised groups. Motivations for engaging in CrossFit® included health prevention (33.1%), athletic training (32.8%), and work-life balance support (17%). Injuries were reported by 28.6% of participants, with 61.4% experiencing single injuries. The majority of injuries (55.3%) occurred during the middle of workouts. Injury types included wounds (23.3%), contusions, sprains, or strains (cumulative 30.8%), and fractures (2.9%). Almost all injured individuals (96.5%) had a time-loss injury, with a return to sport ranging from a day to over three months. Treatments varied, with 50.6% not requiring medical intervention, 34.1% undergoing physiotherapy, 21.2% receiving medication and 8.2% needing surgery. Barbell exercises, notably Snatch and Clean, were main exercises with association to injuries, accounting for 36.3%. The Box Jump stood out as the exercise with the highest isolated injury prevalence (14.3%). Notable injury causes included falls during Pull-Ups and lumbar disc herniation linked to Deadlifts. Following injuries, 45.8% of participants made training adjustments. Conclusion: This study provides an epidemiological investigation into the types and causes of injuries during CrossFit® training in Germany. The shoulder and knee joint exhibited the highest injury prevalence. Barbell exercises, box jumps, and bar pull-ups were identified as major exercises with association to injuries. Prevention through technical training and the incorporation of soft boxes could reduce the risk of injuries in CrossFit®.

Abstract:Background: CrossFit is a popular weightlifting sport, with participants who report significant improvements in physical health; however, others argue that CrossFit exposes participants to an increased risk and severity of injury. We address this through a retrospective cohort study. Purpose/Hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to compare the likelihood of self-reported injury and severity in CrossFit and traditional weightlifting in the previous 2 years. We hypothesized that CrossFit participants would have a higher 2-year likelihood of injury and medical care compared with a traditional weightlifting cohort. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: Anonymous volunteers who participated regularly in CrossFit or traditional weightlifting routines completed a 15-question survey that queried workout routine, injury history, and medical care due to a weightlifting injury. Inclusion criteria included those older than 18 years who were active participants in CrossFit and weightlifting. Unpaired t-test analyses were conducted to compare means of continuous data between participants in CrossFit and traditional weightlifting. A multivariant logistic regression model was used to assess the association of training routine, sex, and age with those sustaining at least 1 injury within the past 2 years. Results: A total of 411 participants (122 CrossFit; 289 traditional weightlifting) completed the questionnaire. Those following a CrossFit routine were 1.30 times more likely to be injured (95% CI, 1.075-1.57; P = .0067) and 1.86 times more likely to seek medical attention (95% CI, 1.40-2.48; P < .0001). In a multivariant logistic regression analysis adjusting for sex and age, injury was 2.26 times more likely in the CrossFit group (95% CI, 1.42-3.62; P = .0010). In both groups, shoulder injuries were most common (46.41%), followed by lower back (38.28%) and hip injuries (9.09%). Conclusion: Athletes participating in CrossFit are more likely to be injured and to seek medical treatment compared with participants in traditional weightlifting. Despite these findings, the increased likelihood of injury may have less to do with the exercises involved with CrossFit and more related to the intensity with which the exercises are performed, and thus increased awareness is needed to prevent further injuries.

Abstract:Clinical Scenario : CrossFit is a form of exercise that incorporates rapid and successive high-intensity ballistic movements. As CrossFit is an increasingly popular fitness option, it is important to determine how rates of injury compare to more traditional forms of exercise. This review was conducted to ascertain the incidence of injury with CrossFit relative to other forms of exercise. Focused Clinical Question : Are injuries more common with CrossFit training than other forms of exercise? Summary of Key Findings : (1) The literature was searched for studies that compared injury rates among individuals who participated in CrossFit fitness programs to participants in other exercise programs. (2) The search initially yielded >100 results, which were narrowed down to 3 level 2b retrospective cohort studies that were deemed to have met inclusion/exclusion criteria. (3) In all 3 reviewed studies, the reported incidences of injuries associated with CrossFit training programs were comparable or lower than rates of injury in Olympic weightlifting, distance running, track and field, rugby, or gymnastics. Clinical Bottom Line : Current evidence suggests that the injury risk from CrossFit training is comparable to Olympic weightlifting, distance running, track and field, rugby, football, ice hockey, soccer, or gymnastics. Injuries to the shoulder(s) appear to be somewhat common with CrossFit. However, the certitude of these conclusions is questionable given the lack of randomization, control, or uniform training in the reviewed studies. Clinicians should be aware that injury is more prevalent in cases where supervision is not always available to athletes. This is more often the case for male participants who may not actively seek supervision during CrossFit exercise. Strength of Recommendation : Level 2b evidence from 3 retrospective cohort studies indicates that the risk of injury from participation in CrossFit is comparable to or lower than some common forms of exercise or strength training.

Abstract:Background: CrossFit is an increasingly popular form of physical activity. However, due to its specificity and high intensity, it carries with it a considerable risk of injuries. So it is important to know if some specific training including exercises derived from physiotherapy and functional training (MobilityWOD) can reduce the risk of injury. Objective: The aim of the study is to assess the effect of MobilityWOD training program on functional movement patterns related to the risk of injury in adult male CrossFit practitioners. Methods: The study included 30 men aged 20-35 years old who practice CrossFit training five timeper week. Initially, a functional evaluation was performed using the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) test including a qualitative assessment of Deep Squat, Hurdle Step, In-Line Lunge, Shoulder Mobility, Active Straight-Leg Raise, Trunk Stability Push-Up, Rotational Stability. Then, for 8 weeks, the participants performed an additional MobilityWOD unit once a week. This training lasted 45 minutes. During MobilityWOD training, athletes performed the self-myofascial release technique, with foam rollers, lacrosse balls and resistance band exercises. After this time the evaluation was carried out using the FMS test. Results: After the MobilityWOD training program, the participants obtained significantly increased scores for the FMS test, scoring 17.3 ± 1.79 points compared to 15.9 ± 2.39 points before the program (medium effect size). The number of athletes scoring equal to or less than 14 points in the FMS test, which is associated higher injury risk, decreased (from 26% before MobilityWOD training to 6% after training). In the case of the specific test components Deep Squat, Shoulder Mobility, Active Straight-Leg Raise, results improved significantly. Conclusions: After MobilityWOD training, the FMS test result for CrossFit athletes improved significantly. The MobilityWOD training in the study group improved the quality of movements patterns and reduced risk of injury.
Common Orthopaedic Injuries in CrossFit Athletes

Abstract:CrossFit is a high-intensity exercise program that has gained popularity over the past few decades. CrossFit combines movements from Olympic weight lifting, gymnastics, powerlifting, and high-intensity interval training. As CrossFit continues to expand, knowledge of the associated orthopaedic injuries to aid providers in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention will be increasingly important. The most common CrossFit injuries occur in the shoulder (25% of all injuries), spine (14%), and knee (13%). Male athletes are markedly more likely to experience injuries than female athletes, and injuries occur markedly less when there is supervised coaching of the athletes. The most common causes of injury in CrossFit include improper form and exacerbation of a prior injury. The purpose of this article was to review the literature to aid clinicians in identifying and treating common orthopaedic injuries in CrossFit athletes. Understanding the injury patterns, treatment, and prevention options is important for a successful recovery and return to sport.

Abstract:Background: Functional training, also known as CrossFit, is a unique sport that combines weightlifting, gymnastics, and metabolic conditioning into a single program. There are an estimated 50 functional training centers in Malaysia. Purpose: To analyze the injury rates, patterns, and risk factors of functional training/CrossFit. Study Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Methods: Electronic questionnaires were distributed to 244 participants from 15 centers in the country. Descriptive data regarding the athletes, injury occurrence within the past 6 months, injury details, and risk factors were collected. Results: Of the 244 athletes, 112 (46%) developed at least 1 new injury over the previous 6 months. Injury rates were significantly higher in athletes from nonaffiliate training gyms compared with CrossFit-affiliated gyms, in athletes with previous injuries, and in those who perceived themselves as having more than average fitness. Conclusion: Coaches and athletes need to be more aware of risk factors for injury to enable safer and better training strategies.

Magnetic order in GdMnO 3 in high magnetic fields

Abstract:Resonant magnetic x-ray scattering at the Gd L2 edge is used to investigate the magnetic order of the Gd moments in multiferroic GdMnO3 at low temperatures. We present high magnetic field data on the magnetic ordering of Gd in the ferroelectric phase of GdMnO3. Our findings reaffirm the important role of the Gd moments in the symmetric magnetic exchange striction responsible for ferroelectricity in this compound.

Abstract:Abstract Background The shoulder joint is the most commonly injured joint in CrossFit practitioners, because of the high intensity and loads associated with this sport. Despite the large number of clinical cases, there is a shortage of studies that investigate influence of biomechanical aspects of upper limbs' injuries on CrossFit practitioners. This study hypothesized that there would be a difference in function, strength, and muscle activation between Crossfit practitioners with and without shoulder pain. Methods We divided 79 Crossfit practitioners into two groups according to whether they reported pain ( n = 29) or no pain ( n = 50) in the shoulder during Crossfit training. Muscle function, strength, and activation were assessed using the Disability Arm, Shoulder and Hand function questionnaire, Upper Quarter Y Balance Test and Closed Kinetic Chain Upper Extremity Stability Test shoulder tests, isometric muscle strength assessment by manual dynamometry and muscle activation by surface electromyography and pain report. Results The function based on questionnaire was associated with pain ( p = 0.004). We observed a statistically significant difference between the two groups only in the surface electromyography activity of the lower trapezius, and in the variables of shoulder pain and function ( p = 0.038). Conclusion Crossfit practitioners with shoulder pain occurring during training showed good function and stability of the shoulder joint, but there was a reduction in the activation of stabilizing muscles, especially the lower trapezius. Occupational Health-Related Problems among Portuguese Fitness Instructors

Abstract:Background: The fitness sector has experienced significant expansion, with fitness instructors (FIs) playing a pivotal role. Given the demands of their profession, understanding their health profile is crucial. This study's purpose is to explore the prevalence of fitness instructors' occupational health-related problems. Methods: A questionnaire covering sociodemographic, occupational, and health-related items was administered. Statistical analyses, including Mann–Whitney U and chi-square tests, Spearman's rho correlations, and logistic regressions, were conducted. Results: Fifty-nine FIs reported occupational health-related problems, with the majority occurring during instruction (66.1%), being muscular (32.2%), and knee (15.3%), the most common type and localization. Significant statistical differences were observed between injured and non-injured FIs, including sex (p = 0.012), years as an FI (p = 0.001), weekly days worked (p = 0.039), and daily hours worked (p = 0.013). Weak negative (−0.284 – −0.362) statistically significant correlations were found between health problems; weight; height; main activity; and FIs in the workplace. Logistic regressions identified significant models showing that having a sport/physical exercise background and practicing it regularly were less likely to report bursitis (OR 0.018; p = 0.020) and hip injuries (OR 0.026; p = 0.037). Conclusions: Approximately one-third of FIs reported occupational-related health problems, predominantly musculoskeletal injuries. Sociodemographic, personal, and occupational factors appear to influence the prevalence of these health problems.

Shoulder pathologies in CrossFit: a magnetic resonance imaging study of 51 cases

Abstract:Background: Recent scientific work shows that the most common injuries in CrossFit© occur in the shoulder joint. This paper aims to provide a review of shoulder pathologies in a young CrossFit© cohort via MRI and clinical examination. Methods: A survey was conducted in 13 CrossFit "boxes" in Germany, in which athletes with recurrent shoulder pain could report for a clinical examination and MRI diagnostic. Fifty-one CrossFit athletes with chronic shoulder pain agreed to participate in the study and were then examined physically and by MRI. Results: Fifty-one active CrossFit athletes aged 21-45 years (mean 33.7 years, 35 male and 16 female) were recruited. The most frequently detected pathologies were partial lesions of the supraspinatus tendon (N.=25; 49%) and labral lesions (N.=11; 21.6%). The findings also identified partial lesions of the subscapularis tendon (N.=9; 17.6%), pulley lesions (N.=9; 17.6%), and partial lesions of the infraspinatus muscle (N.=2; 3.9%). Conclusions: These data demonstrate the need for a specific focus on particular shoulder injuries in CrossFit. Knowledge about the type of shoulder pathologies caused by CrossFit training allows for training-specific adaptations with regard to prevention, as well as a more targeted, sport-specific therapy. This study is the first in the literature to present on structural changes in the shoulders of active CrossFit athletes.

Injury Profile Among Street Workout Practitioners

Abstract:Background: Street workout (SW) is an urban sport based on calisthenic exercises. Injury profiles and risk factors are widely explored in various sport disciplines. However, because of the lack of research in SW, injury profiles have not yet been established. Purpose: To investigate the characteristics and prevalence of injuries and variables that may increase these odds in SW practitioners. Study Design: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 4. Methods: An electronic survey was conducted between September 2018 and March 2019 in order to obtain practitioner information, physical activity level, training characteristics, and injury information of SW practitioners. Responses from 93 practitioners were eligible for analysis. Univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analyses were used to examine the association among several variables and the presence of injury in the past 12 months based on odds ratios (ORs). Results: Overall, 62.4% of the 93 participants reported an injury in the previous 12 months, and tendinopathy was the most reported diagnosis (31.0% of injured practitioners). High injury frequency was reported in the shoulder (23.0%) and back (upper and mid) (18.4%). Overtraining was the most reported perception of cause of injury (56.9%). Most injured practitioners (20.7%) performed freestyle exercises before the injury, followed by upper body exercises. A history of previous injuries (OR, 4.078; P = .005) and the middle and higher tertiles of vigorous physical activity (OR, 4.370; P = .015 and OR, 5.634; P = .003, respectively) were associated with a higher odds of injury. Conclusion: In SW, the shoulder and back (upper and mid) were the most injured body parts, with tendinopathy being the most frequent diagnosis. Overtraining was typically reported as the perceived cause of injury, with freestyle and upper limb exercises the most performed exercises when injured. A history of previous injuries, along with vigorous physical activity, was found to augment the odds of injury. More research is needed to corroborate our findings, along with increased knowledge about SW practice and injuries.
