Abstract:Perceptions of community can play an important role in determining health and well-being. We know little, however, about residents' perceptions of community safety in the Southwestern borderlands, an area frequently portrayed as plagued by disorder. The qualitative aim of this community-based participatory research study was to explore the perceptions of Mexican-origin border residents about their communities in southern Yuma County, Arizona. Our team of University of Arizona researchers and staff from Campesinos Sin Fronteras, a grassroots farmworker support agency in Yuma County, Arizona, developed a bilingual interview guide and recruited participants through radio adds, flyers, and cold calls among existing agency clientele. Thirty individual interviews with participants of Mexican origin who live in and/or work in rural Yuma County were conducted remotely in 2021. Participants overwhelmingly perceived their communities as both calm and safe. While some participants mentioned safety concerns, the vast majority described high levels of personal security and credited both neighbors and police for ensuring local safety. These perceptions were stated in direct contrast to those across the border, where participants had positive familial and cultural ties but negative perceptions regarding widespread violence. In conclusion, we argue that to understand environmental factors affecting health and well-being in Mexican immigrant populations, it is critical to examine the role of binational external referents that color community perceptions.
Culturally Sensitive OCD Research: Lessons from the U.S.-Mexico Border

Abstract:This paper explores culturally-related concerns that arose during a multi-year study of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) along the U.S.-Mexico border and describes adaptations made to better connect the research process to study participants. The purpose of this exploration is two-fold: (1) to offer suggestions for culturally sensitive borderland mental health research; and (2) to enhance dialog focused on culture, mental health research and the U.S.-Mexico border. Systematic coding of the written record of weekly research team meetings identified six recurring cultural concerns: emotionally charged and poorly understood terminology; differing meanings of ethnicity and acculturation; quality of life-regional variation and uncertainty; overlap of research and care; hopeful but hesitant; and fatalism. We conclude that diligence in the initial planning phase of a study is only part of the challenge in doing culturally sensitive research. Equally important is an ongoing process of evaluation to make explicit cultural concerns that arise during research, as well as a readiness to implement culturally sensitive research adaptations.
Using Community-Driven, Participatory Qualitative Inquiry to Discern Nuanced Community Health Needs and Assets of Chicago’s La Villita, a Mexican Immigrant Neighborhood

Abstract:In predominately immigrant neighborhoods, the nuances of immigrant life in the ethnic enclave have important, yet underappreciated impact on community health. The complexities of immigrant experiences are essential to unpacking and addressing the impact of acculturative processes on observed racial, ethnic, and class-based health disparities in the United States. These insights because they are largely unexplored are best captured qualitatively through academic-community research partnership. We established the participatory mixed method Little Village participatory community health assessment (CHA) to explore community health in an ethnic enclave. In this paper, we share findings from our qualitative component exploring: how do Residents in a Predominately Immigrant Neighborhood Perceive Community Health Needs and Assets in Little Village. Three major themes emerged: rich, health promoting community assets inherent in the ethnic enclave; cumulative chronic stress impacting the mental health of families and intra-familial strain; and, work and occupation as important but underappreciated community health determinants in an immigrant neighborhood. These nuanced findings enhanced our community health assessment and contributed to the development of two additional tailored CHA methods, a community member-administered Community Health Survey, and an oral history component that provided deeper insight on the community’s health needs and assets, and a focus for action on work as a social determinant of health at the community level. Conducting trusted community-driven health assessments that are adaptive and flexible to capture authentic needs and assets are critical, given health consequences of the new anti-immigrant rhetoric and growing socio-political tensions and fear in immigrant neighborhoods in the United States.

Abstract:Introduction: Little research on the association of neighborhood environment with physical activity in resource-poor communities has been done. This study assessed changes in perceptions of the neighborhood environment and the association between those perceptions and physical activity in Mexican Americans on the Texas–Mexico border in an area where there would be community efforts to enhance pedestrian and cycling infrastructure and programming. Methods: We analyzed data from a population-based cohort of Mexican American individuals on the Texas–Mexico border. From 2008 to 2018, interviewer-administered questionnaires were used to collect perceptions of neighborhood environment and physical activity at baseline, 5- and 10-year follow-ups, and at other ancillary study visits, with an average of 3 data points per participant. We conducted multivariable longitudinal logistic regression analyses to assess if the changes in odds of positive perceptions of the neighborhood environment over the study years differed by physical activity patterns. Results: The sample (n = 1036) was mostly female (71%), born in Mexico (70%), and had no health insurance (69%). We saw improvements in the perceptions of several neighborhood environment attributes from 2008 to 2018, though we saw different longitudinal trajectories in these perceptions based on an individual's longitudinal physical activity patterns. By 2014–2018, we saw significantly higher positive perceptions of the neighborhood environment for those who consistently met physical activity guidelines compared with those who did not (adjusted rate ratio = 1.12, P = .049). Discussion: We found that perceptions of many neighborhood environment attributes improved between 2008 and 2018, and that overall positive perceptions were associated with consistently meeting physical activity guidelines over time.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Intergenerational transmission of stress is an underrecognized potential contributor to sleep and mental health disparities among at-risk populations. No existing tool captures this construct as experienced at the US-Mexico Border. Methods The DABITSS was originally developed based on the Danieli Inventory of Multigenerational Legacies of Trauma developed for families of Holocaust survivors and was adapted to the border region through a series of focus groups. The end result is a scale in both English and Spanish that consists of 3 subscales: Parents (46 items, parental behaviors indicating transmission of stress), Adaptations (25 items, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that represent internalization of stress), and Experiences (35 items, events that may induce intergenerational stress). Total scores for the Parents and Adaptations subscales range from 0-100, for a total score of 0-200. The Experiences scale ranges from 0-35. Scale and total scores were evaluated relative to insomnia (Insomnia Severity Index), depression (PHQ9 scale), and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs questionnaire). Models were adjusted for age, sex, ethnicity (Mexican or White), survey language (English or Spanish), immigrant status, and acculturation. Results DABITS scores on the Parents subscale ranged from 0.54-63.98 (M=28.99, SD=15.31); scores on the Adaptations subscale ranged from 5-65 (M=33.90, SD=14.51); scores on the Experiences subscale ranged from 0-20 (M=5.11, SD=3.57), and total scores [(Parents+Adaptations)/2] ranged from 10.54-123.06 (M=62.89, SD=26.27). Insomnia severity was associated with Parents (B=0.85, 95%CI [0.10, 1.60]), Adaptations (B=1.16, 95%CI [0.50,1.81]), and total score (B=2.01, 95%CI [0.76,3.25]). Depression was associated with Parents (B=1.09, 95%CI [0.25,1.93]), Adaptations (B=1.29, 95%CI [0.55,2.02]), Experiences (B=0.25, 95%CI [0.06,0.45]), and total score (B=2.38, 95%CI [0.99,3.77]). ACEs score was associated with Parents (B=2.91, 95%CI [1.15,4.67]), Adaptations (B=1.87, 95%CI [0.24,3.51]), Experiences (B=0.99, 95%CI [0.61,1.36]), and total score (B=4.79, 95%CI [1.78, 7.79]). Additional analyses are planned for other sleep (duration, quality, disorders, sleepiness) and mental health (anxiety, stress) measures. Conclusion The DABITSS scale represents multiple dimensions of intergenerational stress (how it was passed on, how it is experienced, and what may have triggered it). Abstract:Addressing mental health is an important part of the COVID-19 response among historically underserved communities, which have been disproportionately affected. Community Health Workers (CHWs) are well placed to offer insights about barriers to mental health service use in their communities, and they are well positioned to address mental health gaps by providing education, resources, and assistance to bridging the gap for the use of more traditional mental health services. Using the perspectives of CHWs, this project identified barriers faced by CHWs in assisting community members with their mental health needs, along with relevant training needs to more effectively deliver mental health resources, referrals, and recommendations to community members. Survey data along with data from focus groups were collected among 43 CHWs in communities that have been historically underserved near the U.S.-Mexico border region. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics whereas qualitative data were analyzed through systematic methods. Identified barriers to assisting community members with their mental health needs exist at the personal, community, environmental and organizational levels, and ranged from fear and mistrust to limited services, resources, funding and training opportunities. To help address the aforementioned barriers and facilitate access to mental health service use in their communities, CHWs identified and described opportunities for training in core areas including communication, mental illness symptom identification, trauma, self-care and stress reduction, and cultural awareness and sensitivity. Needs-based training programs that incorporate the insights of CHWs are a crucial part of promoting community-based mental health to address existing mental health disparities in access to and use of mental health services.

Abstract:Background Many Latinx and Indigenous Mexican populations in the United States Southwest live in unincorporated communities in the US-Mexico borderlands called colonias. These environmental justice communities often lack basic infrastructure, including healthcare services, prompting many to seek services across the border. However, due to geopolitical factors more vulnerable caregivers are limited to utilize healthcare services in the US. This paper reports the experiences and healthcare decision-making of caregivers living in colonias in the US-Mexico border region who care for children with respiratory health conditions. Methods This study was carried out from September to December 2020. Focus groups and interviews were conducted with Latinx and Indigenous Mexican caregivers of children with asthma or respiratory distress. Qualitative interviews elicited caregivers' perspectives on the environmental factors affecting children's chronic health conditions and use of healthcare services. The analysis employed the concept of structure vulnerability to theorize geography as a structural determinant of health for caregivers faced with making healthcare decisions for their suffering from respiratory health conditions. A survey was administered to collect basic sociodemographic information. Results A total of 36 caregivers participated in the study. Structural factors including unincorporated community status and government inaction intersected with social determinants of health to prompt caregivers to cross the US-Mexico border to access healthcare services in Mexico for their children. Yet, more vulnerable caregivers (i.e., those without documentation status in the US) and their children, accessing healthcare services in the US was not an option limiting caregivers' ability to meet their children's healthcare needs. In such cases, geography acts as a structural determinant of health. Conclusion This study shows the importance of geography in health. Rural unincorporated colonias located in the borderlands are precariously located and lack basic critical infrastructure including healthcare access. Within such places, historically and socially marginalized populations become invisible, are subject to the health effects of environmental hazards, and are limited depending on their positionality and thus vulnerability to healthcare services.

Field Notes from the Border: Lessons Learned in Conducting Mental Health Research Involving Newly Arrived Latinx Immigrants as Study Participants

Abstract:In this paper, we describe a research protocol for surveying and interviewing Latinx immigrants recently arrived at the US southern border, and we raise important and unique issues that need to be considered with this population. The main objective is to share experiences, challenges, opportunities, and essential considerations (which we call lessons learned) that researchers should take into account when working with this vulnerable study population. The six lessons learned focus on: (1) fostering relationships with community partners; (2) participant consent and compensation; (3) linguistic and cultural fluency of researchers; (4) adapting data collection procedures to the environment and conditions; (5) establishing trust with participants and being trustworthy; and (6) addressing the ethical considerations of research with immigrant populations and the positionality of researchers. This paper provides a unique perspective of working with a vulnerable population that is in transit, often coming from circumstances of danger and risk to their lives, who are now headed towards new and uncertain experiences that may include disadvantage, exclusion or other risks. The lessons learned from the field inform best practices for working with recently arrived Latinx immigrants, with implications for public health research that may extend to other immigrant populations.

Abstract:Introduction Pasos Adelante is a lifestyle intervention program facilitated by community health workers (promotores) targeting chronic disease prevention and control in Mexican Americans. Initial studies of Pasos Adelante indicated significant improvements in self-reported nutrition and physical activity. This study examined whether Pasos Adelante participants living in a US border community showed improvements in selected physiological measures after participating in the program and whether changes were maintained at 3-month follow-up. Methods The program took place in 12-week sessions from January 2005 to May 2008 and included walking groups and education targeting nutrition and physical activity. Questionnaires, anthropometric measures, and laboratory tests were conducted at baseline (n = 305), conclusion of program (n = 254), and 3-month follow-up (n = 221). Results Participants demonstrated decreases in body mass index (P = .04), waist and hip circumference (P < .001), diastolic and systolic blood pressure (P < .001), and total cholesterol (P = .008) from baseline to program conclusion. No values worsened significantly between program conclusion and follow-up, except systolic blood pressure. Glucose levels improved between conclusion and follow-up (P = .01). Conclusion These results support the initial findings of improvements in participants' self-reported physical activity and nutrition patterns through changes in objective measures. This evidence-based program demonstrates the potential for a promotores-facilitated chronic disease prevention and control program to improve physical health and targets both primary and secondary prevention in Hispanic communities and organizations.

Abstract:Individuals who migrate from their home country face a variety of challenges while adapting to the culture in the United States. Immigrant communities are at a significantly higher risk for poor health outcomes; therefore, assessing healthcare treatment for diverse and resilient immigrant populations, including Hispanic/Latine communities, is crucial to preserving their health, culture, and spirit. A paucity of literature exists surrounding perceptions of well-being in immigrant, Hispanic/Latine adults managing chronic diseases. Past studies have shown a discrepancy between providers' and patients' perceptions of healthcare options for overall well-being. We aim to share varying perspectives found within our work geared towards improving the quality of life for Hispanic/Latine immigrants managing chronic disease, especially type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension. The primary objective of this article is to strengthen the understanding of intersections between social, physical, financial, and spiritual health within an (im)migrant Hispanic/Latine community using semi-structured ethnographic interviews. These interviews have highlighted community resilience, demonstrating that individuals can adapt to major life transitions while maintaining balance across dimensions of health. This knowledge could be implemented by actively listening to patient concerns regarding their health dimensions to improve individualized and patient-centric care.
Rapid assessment procedures in environmental sanitation research: a case study from the northern border of Mexico

Abstract:Background: There is a need to enhance the quality and sustainability of environmental health programs in Mexico. What socio-cultural factors influenced the adoption or rejection of Clean Water in Homes programs in this population? We applied rapid appraisal procedures (RAP) to evaluate these community-based programs. Method: Qualitative study conducted in communities along Mexico's northern border. We conducted informal dialogues, semi-structured interviews, field notes and observations. Home visits used a checklist to observe: sources of water, handwashing, as well as human waste and garbage disposal patterns. Data analysis was conducted using ATLAS.ti, which facilitated comparison and illustration of discrepancies, the elaboration of emerging issues and relationships between them. Results: Community members perceived that the Clean Water program was a top-down intervention. Water is perceived as a political issue and a matter of corruption. Inequity also limits solidarity activities involved in environmental sanitation. Migration to the United States of America (US) contributes to community fragmentation, which in turn dilutes communal efforts to improve water and sanitation infrastructure. While targeting women as program "recipients", the Clean Water program did not take gendered spheres of decision-making into account. Community members and authorities discussed the main results in "assemblies", particularly addressing the needs of excluded groups. Conclusion: The oversight of not exploring community members' needs and priorities prior to program implementation resulted in interventions that did not address the structural (economic, infrastructure) and socio-cultural barriers faced by community members to undertake the health-promoting behaviour change, and provoked resentment.

Abstract:Platelet activating factor (PAF), a potent vasoactive lipid, may play an important role in the inflammatory process. In this study, we infused PAF intra-arterially to characterize its edematogenic potency in the canine forelimb. We have also assessed the ability of the beta 2-receptor agonist l-terbutaline to block PAF-mediated edema formation. The infusion of PAF at .25 micrograms/min, .5 micrograms/min and 1 micrograms/min increased forelimb arterial pressures and, at the two higher dosages, significantly decreased systemic arterial pressure. PAF infusions increased transvascular fluid and macromolecular flux as indicated by significant increases in skin lymph flow, protein concentration and protein transport. The intra-arterial infusion of l-terbutaline at 1 micrograms/min significantly decreased forelimb arterial pressures but did not affect small vein pressure, systemic pressure or forelimb lymph parameters. The subsequent infusion of PAF at .5 micrograms/min, during the continued infusion of l-terbutaline, failed to significantly affect forelimb lymph parameters. These data indicate that PAF is significantly more potent as an edematogenic agent in the forelimb than histamine or bradykinin. Furthermore, the blockade of PAF-mediated edema formation by l-terbutaline suggests that beta 2-receptor agonists may be capable of antagonizing the inflammatory actions of a wide variety of putative inflammatory mediators.
Evaluation of the Community-Based Chronic Disease Prevention Program Meta Salud in Northern Mexico, 2011–2012

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Meta Salud is a community health worker-facilitated intervention in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, and was adapted from Pasos Adelante, a similar evidence-based intervention developed for a Latino population in the United States-Mexico border region. The objective of this study was to examine outcomes for Meta Salud and compare them with outcomes for Pasos Adelante.METHODS: This pretest-posttest study took place during 13 weeks among low-income residents of an urban area. The program provided information on topics such as heart health, physical activity, nutrition, diabetes, healthy weight, community health, and emotional well-being; included individual and group activities aimed at motivating behavior change; and encouraged participants to engage in brisk physical activity.RESULTS: We found significant decreases from baseline to conclusion in body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, weight, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. From baseline to 3-month follow-up, we found significant decreases in body mass index, waist circumference, weight, LDL cholesterol, and glucose, and an increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Outcomes for Meta Salud were similar to those found for Pasos Adelante.CONCLUSION: The physiological improvements found among participants in Meta Salud and comparable changes among participants in Pasos Adelante suggest a scalable and effective behavioral intervention for regions of the United States and Mexico that share a common boundary or have similar cultural and linguistic characteristics.

Community-engaged Research with Rural Latino Adolescents: Design and Implementation Strategies to Study the Social Determinants of Health

Abstract:The health of adolescents, perhaps more than in any other period of their life, is shaped by the social determinants of health (SDH). The constellation of SDH that disadvantages a specific group's health may also make members of that population unable or unwilling to engage in health research. To build a comprehensive body of knowledge about how SDH operate within a specific social context, researchers must design studies that take into account how various vulnerabilities and oppressions may affect people's experiences of being recruited, interviewed and retained in a study. In 2014, we initiated a prospective cohort study with Latino youth living in the agricultural area of Salinas, California. We began this study with the understanding that it was imperative to develop methodological strategies that actively addressed potential challenges in ways that were culturally responsive, community engaged and inclusive. In this article, we describe our approach to developing best practices in four key areas: 1) building community partnerships and engagement; 2) consideration of staffing and staff support; 3) engaging youth's perspectives; and 4) developing culturally appropriate research protocols. In our sample of 599 participants, nearly all youth identify as Latinx (94 per cent), half (49 per cent) have at least one parent employed as a farmworker, 60 per cent reside in crowded housing conditions, and 42 per cent have mothers who did not complete high school. Given these multiple vulnerabilities, we view a robust number of youth expressing interest in study participation, the willingness of their parents to permit their children to be enrolled, and the achievement of an ambitious sample target as evidence that our efforts to undertake best practices in community-engaged and inclusive research were well received.
A qualitative study of social connectedness and its relationship to community health programs in rural Chiapas, Mexico

Abstract:BackgroundSocial connectedness is an important predictor of health outcomes and plays a large role in the physical and mental health of an individual and a community. The presence of a functioning health clinic with a community health worker program may indirectly improve health outcomes by increasing the social connectedness of the community in addition to providing direct patient care. This study examines the social connectedness of the inhabitants of three Mexican towns within the catchment area of a healthcare Non-Government Organization (NGO) through a qualitative analysis.MethodsWilling participants were videotaped answering open-ended questions about their community and use of healthcare resources. Interviews were then coded for relevant themes and analyzed for content relating to social connectedness, social isolation, and health.ResultsRespondents reported that having a functioning community clinic had improved their lives significantly through direct provision of care and by reducing the financial burden of travel to seek medical care elsewhere. Respondents from each town differed slightly in their primary means of social support. One town relied more heavily on organized groups (i.e., religious groups) for their support system. Social isolation was reported most frequently by housewives who felt isolated in the home and by respondents that had to deal with personal illness. Respondents that self-identified as Community Health Workers (CHWs) in their respective communities acknowledged that their roles bestowed physical and psychological health benefits upon themselves and their families.ConclusionsOverall, a long-term health intervention may directly impact the relative social isolation and social connectedness of a community’s inhabitants. The social connectedness of the community is an important quality that must be considered when evaluating and planning health interventions.

Abstract:This study centers on familismo as a relevant cultural construct that adds a U.S. Latina/o/x perspective to the Health Belief Model. Employing a qualitative lens, we use in-depth semi-structured focus groups and interviews with participants living, working, and attending school in a mid-size city on the U.S./Mexico border on the decision to take the COVID-19 vaccine. We find that, for many members of these communities, getting vaccinated is seen as a way to protect not only oneself but also one's family, especially those with chronic health conditions, reflecting an obligation to prioritize the collective over the individual. We highlight various approaches that families take to discuss COVID-19 vaccines, ranging from women coordinating vaccination to a non-confrontational approach to the unvaccinated. The borderlands as a place also showcase the diversity of the U.S. Latina/o/x experience during the pandemic, since the perceived disparities of vaccine access in Mexico also seemed to cue the decision to get vaccinated. We propose this helps explain the exceptionally high vaccination rate in the city under study and seen in several other border communities. By illuminating how familial ties impact health communication surrounding this important issue, this study adds an expanded Latina/o/x cultural context for aspects of the Health Belief Model such as perceived severity and susceptibility.

Abstract:Well-integrated and productive communities are an asset to the development and advancement of our nation, and they have an important role to play in planning, learning, and enforcing safety to enhance national and border security. REACH (Resilience, Education, Action, Commitment, and Humanity) is a community-based project housed at The University of Texas at El Paso that aims to prevent targeted violence and domestic terrorism in El Paso County. We integrated three frameworks (i.e., Whole Community Preparedness, Socio-Ecological Model, and Global Citizen Education) to involve local residents in efforts to combat and mitigate targeted violence. REACH had two goals: to (1) prevent targeted violence and domestic terrorism through education, outreach, and community capacity-building aimed at identifying and deterring radicalization (primary prevention) and (2) reduce the short-term and long-term impact and prevent re-occurrence of targeted violence and domestic terrorism (secondary and tertiary prevention). Overall, our project served 8,934 participants directly and reached many more through our media cavmpaigns and outreach efforts during our 2 years of project implementation (2021–2023). Our project design may serve as an implementation model for other community-based projects on the U.S.-Mexico border and can be replicated with other target populations in the U.S. Insights and lessons learned from this project are discussed.
Examining Financial Strain and Subjective Social Status in Terms of Behavioral Health Among Latinx Adults in a Federally Qualified Health Center

Abstract:There is a growing recognition that Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) can inform some sources of physical and mental health disparities among the Latinx population. The current study sought to expand previous research by exploring the singular and interactive influence of financial strain and subjective social status-two common and clinically important SDoH factors-on pain intensity, pain disability, general depression, social anxiety, and anxious arousal. The current sample consisted of 155 Latinx adults (81.3% female; Mage = 40.02 years, SD = 10.61) presenting for care at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). Multivariate results demonstrated that financial strain was statistically significantly associated with greater pain intensity, pain disability, general depression, and anxious arousal, but not social anxiety. Further, lower subjective social status was related to greater general depression, social anxiety, and anxious arousal but not with higher levels of pain indices. An interactive effect was found wherein the combination of higher levels of financial strain and low levels of subjective social status was related to general depression and anxious arousal. This is the first study to empirically evaluate the main and interactive effects of financial strain and subjective social status regarding numerous physical and mental health symptoms. These findings clarify how two prevalent SDoH factors influence health outcomes. Specifically, the results suggest that a multi-risk conceptualization can advance a fine-grained understanding of Latinx health disparities by showing differential associations between SDoH factors and clinical outcomes that are frequently the source of health inequities in the Latinx population.
Trajectories of physiological stress markers over time among Latinx immigrants in the United States: Influences of acculturative stressors and psychosocial resilience

Abstract:Aims: Latinx immigrants are exposed to acculturative stressors as they adapt to the U.S. However, little is known about the impact of acculturative stressors and psychosocial resilience on physiological responses and health over time. The purpose of this study was to examine trajectories of physiological stress markers among Latinx adults over time and examine the influence of acculturative stressors and psychosocial resilience factors on these different trajectories. Methods: A community-based, longitudinal study was conducted with adult Latinx immigrants in North Carolina (N = 391) over a two-year period. Self-reported measures of ten different types of acculturative stressors (e.g., occupational, family, healthcare, discrimination) and psychosocial resilience factors (individual resilience, coping, ethnic pride, familism, and social support) along with urine samples were taken at baseline and 12- and 24-month follow-up periods. Biomarkers of physiological stress (inflammatory cytokines interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8 and IL-18 and C-Reactive Protein (CRP)) were measured in urine. Multivariate latent class growth analysis, linear mixed models, and unadjusted bivariate analyses were conducted to address the study aims. Results: Participants were an average of 39 years of age (SD = 6.94) and mostly women (68.8%) and Spanish speakers (83%). Three latent classes of physiological stress marker trajectories were identified: resilient, rapidly increasing stress, and chronic elevated stress. These latent classes had significant differences in gender, race, coping styles, ethnic pride, and parental acculturative stressors. Conclusions: The findings from this study identify specific types of acculturative stressors and psychosocial resilience factors that are important targets for health promotion and disease prevention programs for Latinx immigrants.
