Abstract:According to the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the surveillance of motor development should accompany systematic appointments with medical professionals in infancy and early childhood. One of the standardized tools for evaluating motor development is the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS). This paper aims to present assumptions and psychometric properties of the AIMS, the methodology of assessment of an infant's performance with the AIMS, and research on the validation and standardization of the AIMS as well as the use of the scale as an outcome measure. We conducted a non-systematic literature review using three electronic databases: PubMed, Scopus, and Embase (from June 1992 to February 2022). We included original research with a full-text manuscript in English. No geographical restrictions were applied. The search terms "alberta infant motor scale" AND "reliability" OR "validity" and "alberta infant motor scale" AND "norms" OR "reference" OR "standardization" were used for literature review on the validation and standardization of the AIMS in other non-Canadian populations. This narrative review also focuses on how the AIMS is applied as an outcome measure in research by presenting studies on the AIMS conducted over the last decade. Our review found that the AIMS is widely used for both research and clinical purposes. The AIMS has been used as an outcome measure in both interventional and observational studies conducted on both neurotypical infants and those with conditions affecting motor development. The advantages of the scale are its infant-friendliness, time duration of the examination, and relative ease of application for an examiner. The scale has been validated and standardized in many countries.
Reliability and Concurrent Validity of a Chinese Version of the Alberta Infant Motor Scale Administered to High-Risk Infants in China

Abstract:The Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) is widely used to screen for delays in motor development in high-risk infants, but its reliability and validity in Chinese infants have not been investigated. To examine the reliability and concurrent validity of AIMS in high-risk infants aged 0-9 months in China, this single-center study enrolled 50 high-risk infants aged 0-9 months (range, 0.17-9.27; average, 4.14±2.02), who were divided into two groups: 0-3 months (n=23) and 4-9 months (n=27). A physical therapist evaluated the infants with AIMS, with each evaluation video-recorded. To examine interrater reliability, two other evaluators calculated AIMS scores by observing the videos. To measure intrarater reliability, the two evaluators rescored AIMS after >1 month, using the videos. Concurrent validity was assessed by comparing results between AIMS and the Peabody Developmental Motor Scale-2 (PDMS-2). For all age groups analyzed (0-3, 4-9, and 0-9 months), intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for AIMS total score were high for both intrarater comparisons (0.811-0.995) and interrater comparisons (0.982-0.997). AIMS total scores were well correlated with all PDMS-2 subtest scores (ICC=0.751-0.977 for reflexes, stationary, locomotion, grasping, and visual-motor integration subsets). However, the fifth percentile of AIMS total score was only moderately correlated with the gross motor quotient, fine motor quotient, and total motor quotient subtests of PDMS-2 (kappa=0.580, 0.601, and 0.724, respectively). AIMS has acceptable reliability and concurrent validity for screening of motor developmental delay in high-risk infants in China.

Abstract:Alberta Infant Motor Scale is an assessment tool to evaluate the gross motor development of the infant between birth until independent walking. It is a clinical practical assessment tool to be used and has been used broadly. The aim of this study was to examine the concurrent validity of Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) in Chinese with gross motor scale of Peabody Developmental Motor Scale II (PDMS-II) when used in high-risk infants. One hundred and eighteen high-risk infants with the average age of 7.76 ± 3.93 months (from 2 to 17 months) were recruited to this study. Three investigators experienced in AIMS and PDMS-II participated in this study. Each investigator administered the AIMS and PDMS-II to the infants within one week and recorded the assessment results. The raw scores of AIMS and PDMS-II-GM for each infant were analyzed for the concurrent validity. The Pearson correlation coefficient of AIMS with PDMS-II was 0.97. For the 0∼4 month group, the Pearson correlation coefficient was 0.94. For the 4∼8 month group, Pearson correlation coefficient was 0.95. For the 8∼12 month group, Pearson correlation coefficient was 0.94. For the >12 month group, Pearson correlation coefficient was 0.91. The AIMS in Chinese had high concurrent validity with PDMS-II when used in high-risk infants at very early age.
Assessment of Anxiety and Depression in Polish Primary Parental Caregivers of Children with Cerebral Palsy Compared to a Control Group, as well as Identification of Selected Predictors

Abstract:Background: Taking care of a child with Cerebral Palsy (CP) may be linked with adverse effects in the parents' physical and mental health. The causes of anxiety and depression symptoms associated with childcare are still not fully understood. Aim: To assess the intensity of anxiety and depression symptoms in parents of children with CP compared to a control group and to identify selected mental health predictors. Design and methods: Data were collected from 301 respondents, including 190 parents of children with CP (study group) and 111 parents taking care of children developing normally (control group). Intensity of anxiety and depression was rated using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) scale. Gross Motor Function Classification System for Cerebral Palsy (GMFCS), Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC-29), Berlin Support Social Scales (BSSS) scales and a specially designed questionnaire were used to assess the predictors. The investigated variables included the children's and the parents' characteristics, as well as environmental factors. The analyses applied Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, M(SD) as well as multiple regression. Results: The level of anxiety and depression was clearly higher in the parents of children with CP-the mean levels of anxiety and depression in the study group and the controls amounted to 8.1 vs. 4.7 and 6.8 vs. 3.7, respectively. The factors associated with intensity of anxiety and depression in the parents of children with CP included lack of social support, mainly perceived and received support, unsatisfying parental health status, poor economic status of the family, as well as difficult living conditions, sense of coherence, loneliness, the parent's gender, and the child's intellectual disability. Conclusions: Identification of significant anxiety and depression predictors, understood as modifiable factors, should be considered in determining and planning comprehensive support for a child with CP and his/her primary parental caregiver.
Psychometrics Study of Alberta Infant Motor Scale and Peabody Developmental Motor Scale in High Risk Infants

Abstract:The aim of this study was to compare the psychometric properties of Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) with gross motor scale of Peabody Developmental Motor Scale II (PDMS-II) when they were used in high-risk infants. Fifty-eight high-risk infants with the average age 4.46 ± 0.97 months (from 2 to 6 months) were recruited to this study. Three investigators experienced in AIMS and PDMS-II participated in this study. Each investigator administered the AIMS and PDMS-II to the infants and recorded the assessment results. Forty-seven high-risk infants were followed-up till two years old. The diagnosis at two years old and the first scale assessment result were used to investigate the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of AIMS and PDMS-II. When used in high-risk infants in an early age, the AIMS's sensitivity was 0.857, specificity was 0.731, positive predictive value was 0.720, and negative predictive value was 0.864. For the PDMS-II, the sensitivity was 0.524, specificity was 1.000, positive predictive value was 1.000, and negative predictive value was 0.722. The AIMS is a sensitive monitor tool to evaluate the motor development of high-risk infants at very early age compared with PDMS-II. It needs to dynamic monitor for the high-risk infants.

Abstract:Introduction: Mobility, defined as active, controlled, multi-joint flexibility used in movement, is limited in pregnant women due to problems with low back pain (LBP) and pelvic girdle pain (PGP). The Pregnancy Mobility Index (PMI) is a tool for assessing mobility in relation to LBP/PGP. The lack of a Polish version of the PMI test prompted a transcultural adaptation to the Polish conditions. The aim of the study was to evaluate the measurement properties of the Polish adaptation of the Pregnancy Mobility Index. Methods: The study involved 121 pregnant women aged 18–44. The translation process was in accordance with the transcultural adaptation design. Reliability was assessed by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Construct validity between the Polish version of the PMI (PMI-PL) and the Physical Activity Pregnancy Questionnaire (PPAQ-PL) was assessed by Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. Results: The transcultural adaptation of the PMI test into Polish was satisfactory, with high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.97–0.98, ICC = 0.989). Statistically significant inverse proportional correlations were found for total PA, total PA (light and above), light PA, moderate PA, and vigorous PA in the construct validity analysis between PMI-PL and PPAQ-PL. Discussion: The Polish version of the PMI is a reliable instrument. The introduction of a questionnaire with a classification system will make it easier for health professionals to monitor the health status of pregnant women and encourage them to engage in physical activity appropriate for their current level of mobility.

The Motor Development and Motor Skill Levels of 6-Year-Old Children from the Lublin Voivodeship

Abstract:Abstract Introduction. The objective of the research was to assess the level of physical development and motor skills of six-yearold children from the Lublin voivodeship against the Polish population. Material and methods. The study included 2144 children, 997 girls and 1134 boys. To assess the level of physical fitness, selected, exercises from the EUROFIT test were used. In addition, children's ability to demonstrate simple motor skills during physical play and games was also assessed. The assessment involved: throwing a bag with the right hand, throwing a ball with both hands, gripping a bag with the right hand, kicking a ball with the right foot, jumping on the right leg and jumping with both feet. In addition, coordination during the exercises was evaluated. For measurement purposes, a four-point scale was used. The reference point was children from a nationwide sample. The results were statistically analyzed using the Student T-test and the nonparametric chi-square test. Results . Children from the Lublin region differ significantly in their level of physical fitness from children of the same age throughout Poland (p≤0.001). They achieved significantly lower results in tests assessing the strength of their arms, abdominal muscles and, the explosive strength of their lower limbs and in two tests evaluating speed (running speed: p≤0.001, hand movement speed: p≤0.001). Only in the test of their sense of balance, did both sexes, obtain significantly better results (p≤0.001). In addition, in the opinion of physical education teachers, children in the Lublin region exhibited significantly lower levels of skill when performing motor tasks. Conclusions . The results suggest that the motor potential of preschool children is being neglected, which seems to be indirectly caused by different factors in the external environment.
Polish Cultural Adaptation and Reliability of the Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Motor Performance and Sensory Assessment Scale in Stroke Patients

Abstract:Background and Purpose: The Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Motor Performance and Sensory Assessment Scale (FMA) is the most commonly used and recommended outcome measure for the sensorimotor impairment of the upper and lower limbs in stroke patients. The aim of this study was to perform cross-cultural translation and adaptation of the scale into Polish and to evaluate the FMA's reliability of motor performance and sensation of the upper and lower limb sections among ischemic stroke patients. Methods: The Polish version of the FMA (FMA-PL) was developed using a forward–backward translation performed by a group of experts and then evaluated by a panel of judges according to international guidelines. The study involved 86 patients (F = 30, M = 56, i.e., 35%; the average age of patients was 64 ± 12 years, 36 with right-sided stroke and 50 with left-sided stroke). The FMA-PL was carried out twice by two experienced neurological physiotherapists with a 2 h gap between assessments (test–retest and inter-rater). The reliability of the outcome measure was defined by calculating the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The standard error of measurement (SEM) and the minimum detectable change (MDC) were also calculated. The internal consistency of the test was determined by the Cronbach's alpha indicator. Results: Three domains were evaluated on the FMA-PL scale. From the whole test, results were obtained in the range of 12–124 points: 64 points for FMA-UE-PL 2, 34 points for FMA-LE-PL 4, and 24 points for FMA-S-PL 0. The ICC values were in the range of 0.99–1.00 for the total FMA-PL score and the results of each domain. The SEM and MDC for the entire FMA-PL calculated for test–retest measurements were 0.22 and 1.60, respectively. The SEM and MDC for the total FMA-PL score obtained during repeated measurements of the same investigator were 1.3 and 3.5 points, respectively. The Cronbach's alpha values calculated for the total FMA-PL, FMA-UE-PL, FMA-LE-PL, and FMA-S-PL items amounted to 0.938–0.939, 0.932–0.934, and 0.634–0.722, respectively. Conclusions: The Polish version of the FMA is a consistent and reliable outcome measure for the motor and sensory evaluation of the upper and lower limbs for patients in subacute and chronic stroke stages.

Abstract:Objective:To examine the interrater and intrarater reliability of the Alberta Infant Motor Scale(AIMS) when it was used in normal full-term infants in Beijing,China.Method:Forty-five normal full-term infants including 26 boys and 19 girls lived in Beijing,with the average age(6.89±2.97)months(from 4 to 12.5 months), were admitted to this investigation.Twenty-three infants were younger than 6 months and twenty-two infants were older than 6 months.Three evaluators(evaluator A,B,C)were admitted to this investigation.In the interrater reliability study,evaluator A administered the AIMS to the infants and videotaped their performance,then evaluators B,C scored the performance in the videos independently to examine the interrater reliability.After at least one month,evaluators B,C rescored the performance with the videos again to examine the intrarater reliability.Intraclass correlation coefficients(ICCs)were calculated to examine the reliability.Result:In the interrater reliability study, total ICC=0.995,6 months group ICC=0.903,6 months group ICC=0.974.In the intrarater reliability study,total ICCs=0.997-0.999,6 months group ICCs=0.892-0.972,6 months group ICCs=0.987-0.998.Conclusion:The results suggested that when AIMS was used to evaluate the motor development of the normal full-term infants in Beijing,China,its reliability was high.

Abstract:Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare, Ahead of Print. IntroductionUsing standardized scales to assess motor development via telemedicine can increase access for low-income populations. Our aim was to verify the agreement and feasibility between remotely and synchronously applying the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) and the in-person format.MethodsThis was a concordance study, with 77 typical infants aged 4–18 months (mean = 13 months). The AIMS was applied remote via video calls and face-to-face. We applied a questionnaire to caregivers to verify feasibility.ResultsThere was a high level of agreement between the remote and in-person assessments, with intraclass correlation coefficients above 0.98 and low standard error measure values (<1 item for each posture, <2 items for the total raw score, and =5% for the normative score). The smallest detectable change was between 1.67 and 2.45 for each posture, 3 for the total raw score, and 6% for the normative score. The Bland–Altman analysis showed low bias with the mean difference close to zero (<0.80) and low error with little dispersion of the difference points around the mean. Caregivers' perspectives on the synchronous remote assessment were positive, with good quality, clear information during the assessment, and comfort with the method.DiscussionThe synchronous remote application of the AIMS may be an alternative for families without access to in-person services that assess motor development.

Abstract:Objective: To examine the interrater and intrarater reliability of Alberta infant motor scale (AIMS) used in high risk infants. Method: Forty-four high risk infants including 29 boys and 15 girls, with the average age (8.95±4.16) months (from 3 to 16 months), were admitted in this investigation. They were divided into four groups based on age as below. Eleven infants were younger than 4 months, 9 infants were between 5 and 8 months, 13 infants were between 9 and 12 months and 11 infants were between13 and 16 months. In the interrater reliability study, an evaluator administered the evaluation with AIMS to the infants and videotaped their performance, then two other evaluators scored the performance in the videos independently to examine interrater reliability. After at least one month, two evaluators rescored the performance with the videos again to examine the intrarater reliability. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were calculated to examine the reliability. Result: In the interrater reliability study, total ICC=0.994, subgroups ICC=0.970—0.993, any two of the evaluators ICC=0.986—0.995. In the intrarater reliability study, total ICC=0.993—0.999. Conclusion:When AIMS was used to evaluate the motor development of high risk infants, its reliability was high.
The adaptation of Polish version of the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale (RHDS) for postpartum mothers

Abstract:Objectives: The Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale (RHDS) for postpartum women was developed and validated in the US in 2006. The aim of the research was to analyse the psychometric properties of the Polish version of the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale (RHDS) for subjective assessment of the bio-psycho-physical status of women after childbirth. Material and methods: After the preparation of the Polish-language version of the questionnaire, the study was conducted among 168 postpartum women on the day they were discharged from the hospital. For the analysis of the reliability of the questionnaire, the Cronbach Alpha test was used, where the index of values above 0.7 was assumed to mean the correct reliability of the scale. Results: Statistical analysis using the Alpha Cronbach test for the questions presented amounted to: 0.835, which indicates that the results are correctly aligned with one another. Conclusions: The conducted analysis confirms that the Polish-language questionnaire in its current form has high reliability for the assessment of readiness to discharge in postpartum women and may be used in Polish conditions.

Abstract:Background: Normative data on hand and precision grip strengths are essential for evaluating the level of development, the efficacy of rehabilitation, and treatment results. The need for established norms of grip strength in Polish children is one of the problems that Polish physiotherapists and physicians face when treating upper limbs. The aim was to establish normative values of hand and precision grips strengths in Polish children and adolescents aged 3-19. Methods: In the years 2012-2023, a sample of 358 children and adolescents with no history of upper limb injuries or congenital upper extremity defects were randomly chosen from kindergartens, primary schools, middle schools, and high schools. They were living in urban agglomerations and in smaller towns or villages. Hand and precision grips like the pincer, three-point, side, and opposition grip strength were assessed using a hand dynamometer and pinchmeter in standard positions. Results: The strength in all types of examined hand grips increases with chronological age in both genders. The grip strength was higher in the boys' group than in the girls' and it was higher in the right hand than in the left, but the difference was no more greater than 10%. Detailed data with standard deviation were presented in the form of a table, divided by age and sex. Conclusions: Norms for grip strength were provided for Polish children and adolescents aged 3-19, allowing therapists and physicians to compare Polish patients with that of normally developed, healthy children of the same age and sex.
Reference values of selected auditory temporal processing tests for Polish school children

Abstract:Introduction: Distorted processing of auditory information has a negative impact on the child's cognitive development. There are only a few studies conducted by Polish researchers determining normative values of psychoacoustic tests in auditory processing disorders. They are inconsistent due to different methodologies and research protocols. Objective: The aim of this work is to determine the reference values of selected psychoacoustic tests for the population of Polish children between 7 and 12 years of age. Material and method: The study group consisted of 213 healthy children from 7 to 12 years of age. The condition for including the child in the study was an intellectual norm, proper sound sensitivity, proper development of children's voice and speech. All children underwent two auditory temporal processing tests. The diagnostic procedure used a standardized Frequency Pattern Test (FPT) and Duration Pattern Test (DPT). The tests were carried out in accordance with the authors' recommendations, using the original versions available on the CD for 60 dB SL intensity, simultaneously for the right and left ear. Results: The reference values for FPT and DPT tests were determined at various age ranges in children aged 7-12. It has been shown that auditory functions change with the child's age and development. Reference values including age, language, cultural and educational differences were prepared. Conclusions: Development of reference values for individual tests for the Polish children population is a key element in reliable diagnosis of auditory processing.

Abstract:Objective: Since over forty years structuralized interviews for clinical and epidemiological research in child and adolescent psychiatry are being developed that should increase validity and reliability of diagnoses according to classification systems (DSM and ICD). The aim of the study is to assess the validity of the Polish version of MINI-KID (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview for Children and Adolescents) in comparison to clinical diagnosis made by a specialist in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. Materials and methods: There were 140 patients included in the study (93 boys, 66.4%, mean age 11.8±3.0 and 47 girls 33.5%, mean age 14.0±2.9). All the patients were diagnosed by the specialist in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry according to ICD-10 criteria and by the independent interviewer with the Polish version of MINI-KID (version 2.0, 2001). Results: There was higher agreement between clinical diagnoses and diagnoses based on MINI-KID interview with respect to eating disorders and externalizing disorders (κ 0.43-0.56) and lower in internalizing disorders (κ 0.13-0.45). In the clinical interview, there was smaller number of diagnostic categories (maximum 3 diagnoses per one patient) in comparison to MINI-KID (maximum 10 diagnoses per one patient), and the smaller percentage of patients with one diagnosis (65,7%) in comparison to MINI-KID interview (72%). Conclusion: Our study has shown satisfactory validity parameters of MINI-KID questionnaire, promoting its use for clinical and epidemiological settings. Implications and contribution: The Mini International Neuropsychiatry Interview for Children and Adolescent (MINI-KID) is the first structuralized diagnostic interview for assessing mental status in children and adolescents, which has been translated into Polish language. Our validation study demonstrated satisfactory psychometric properties of the questionnaire, enabling its use in clinical practice and in research projects.
Psychometric evaluation of the Polish adaptation of the Body Appreciation Scale-2 for Children (BAS-2C)

Abstract:Positive body image is crucial in fostering self-esteem, mental well-being, and positive social functioning. However, our understanding of its development and role in school-aged children remains limited due to a scarcity of measures available for this age group across various countries and cultures. To bridge this gap, the aim of this study was to adapt the Body Appreciation Scale-2 for Children (BAS-2C) for Polish children aged 8–13 years. A total of 206 children completed BAS-2C to measure positive body image, the Figures Rating Scale to measure body satisfaction, and the Self-Perception Profile for Children to measure self-esteem. Parents provided information about their child's weight and height, which enabled analysis of a child's BMI. The results showed that the Polish version of BAS-2C exhibited a unidimensional factor structure, invariance across sex and age groups, and also provided evidence of very good internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and construct validity. BAS-2C scores were correlated positively with Figures Rating Scale, physical appearance and global self-esteem and were related negatively to age and BMI index, and weight group. Moreover, our research indicates that in older children, there are stronger correlations between positive body image and both global and physical appearance self-esteem, compared to younger children. The Polish version of BAS-2C has excellent psychometric properties and is appropriate for use with children aged 8–13 years.

Abstract:Aim of study. The Gastrointestinal Dysfunction Scale for Parkinson's Disease (GIDS-PD) is a novel, disease-specific self-report questionnaire used to quantitatively assess features of gastrointestinal dysfunction symptoms in patients with Parkinson's Disease. The aim of this paper was to validate the Polish translation of the scale, to summarise its consistency with the English language version, and to assess its clinimetric properties. Clinical rationale for study. Gastrointestinal dysfunction is a common and often debilitating manifestation of Parkinson's Disease (PD). Gastrointestinal symptoms are also considered to be prodromal features of this disease. To date, there has been no scale in Polish that has precisely assessed gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with PD. Material and methods. The GIDS-PD was translated into Polish by two investigators (M.K. and J.N.). A back-translation was completed by two separate investigators (M.F. and A.A.) who were not involved in the original translation. Afterwards, 10 Polish PD patients underwent cognitive pre-testing. After the final translation was officially approved by the Movement Disorder Society, it was tested on 64 individuals with PD during field testing. For the purpose of testing scale reliability, 20 of the patients recruited for field testing underwent the GIDS-PD for a second time after 8-12 weeks. Results. The GIDS-PD demonstrated overall good consistency (Cronbach's alpha of 0.74, ICC of 0.74). Regarding the individual domains, the constipation subscore demonstrated good reliability, the bowel irritability subscore demonstrated moderate reliability, and the upper GI subscore demonstrated poor reliability. Upper GI symptoms seem to be less pronounced, and also more varied, in the Polish PD population than in its English language counterpart. Conclusions and clinical implications. This paper provides a validated Polish translation of the GIDS-PD questionnaire. We highly recommend using the GIDS-PD for research purposes, as well as everyday clinical practice in the Polish PD population.
