Abstract:A 51-year-old man presented with cough and pain in his upper chest for 1 week. Chest CT showed an ill-defined right paratracheal mass with slight enhancement in the upper mediastinum. A FDG PET/CT was performed showing focal increased FDG uptake with SUVmax of 4.7 in the mass. The mass was excised surgically. Histopathologic examination revealed infected bronchogenic cyst.

Abstract:The extension of density functional theory (DFT) to include pairing correlations without formal violation of the particle-number conservation condition is described. This version of the theory can be considered as a foundation of the application of existing DFT plus pairing approaches to atoms, molecules, ultracooled and magnetically trapped atomic Fermi gases, and atomic nuclei where the number of particles is conserved exactly. The connection with Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theory is discussed, and the method of quasilocal reduction of the nonlocal theory is also described. This quasilocal reduction allows equations of motion to be obtained which are much simpler for numerical solution than the equations corresponding to the nonlocal case. Our theory is applied to the study of some even Sn isotopes, and the results are compared with those obtained in the standard HFB theory and with the experimental ones.

Abstract:Objective To demonstrate the computed tomography (CT) features of sclerosing pneumocytoma (SP).Methods Sixteen cases of pathologically proven sclerosing pneumocytoma were included in this retrospective review.Resuits Female patients of SP were markedly frequent (n =14,87.5％).14 patients ≥50 years old.These nodules (n =15) were round (n =8),oval (n =5),mildly lobulated (n =2) in shape with a smooth boundary.Among the 16 patients,15 patients had a single lesion,1 patient had multiple lesions.The presence of overlying vessel sign (n =7),halo sign or GGO (n =6),egg and bird's nest sign (n =2),air-trapping sign (n =5) were the features in our cases.Two of 16 patients had two tumours in the lung,with the histopathology of SP and adenocarcinoma in situ,respectively.One case had been suspected for adenocarcinoma in small biopsies.Another case of SP with neuroendocrine differentiation (neuroendocrine tumor).Conclusion The features of tumor morphology and tumor periphery have important implications for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis with other tumors.

Abstract:Solitary pulmonary fibroleiomyomatous hamartoma is a very rare benign tumor. A 57-year-old man presented with dry cough over 1 month. A CT showed an irregular nodule in the left upper lobe of the lung. A malignant tumor was suspected, and further investigation with F-18-FDG PET/CT showed the pulmonary nodule with slightly increased FDG uptake. Thoracoscopic resection was performed. Subsequent histopathological and immunohistochemical tests confirmed the diagnosis of fibroleiomyomatous hamartoma.

Abstract:Pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma (PSP), a rare benign lung tumor of primordial epithelial origin, commonly effects middle-aged Asian females. Diagnosis of this entity is challenging because of the non-specific radiological characteristics that resemble malignancies and its histological heterogeneity. Main differential diagnoses considered are adenocarcinoma lung and carcinoid tumor. In this case report, we discuss our experience of diagnosing a case of pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma, which showed increased SUV uptake in PET-CT indicating towards a malignancy and was also misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma in CT-guided FNAC. The histology showed variable morphological features and there was a differential staining pattern of TTF1 and napsin A in the cells. We have highlighted the differential diagnosis and the challenges faced for diagnosing this benign, rare entity.

Abstract:Pulmonary epithelial myoepithelial carcinoma is very rare. We reported the imaging finding of pulmonary epithelial myoepithelial carcinoma of bronchus in a 61-year-old man on 18F-FDG PET/CT. An irregular mass with an SUVmax of 6.36 growing along right upper lobe bronchus and multiple pulmonary nodules around the mass were found on 18F-FDG PET/CT. Postoperative pathology demonstrated the diagnosis of epithelial myoepithelial carcinoma.

Abstract:– Washed cells of K-l streptococcus, cariogenic to rat, were incubated in buffer solutions free of growth-promoting agents. In the presence of external potassium at pH 5.8, only a high concentration of ammonium could reduce the fermentative accumulation of potassium by the cells. In the absence of extracellular potassium, a high concentration of external sodium or ammonium extruded the “original” potassium of the fermenting cells. Acid production by the organisms, as indicated by the decrease in the suspension pH, increased markedly with the increase in external potassium. The ammonium ion interfered with the cellular potassium transfer more than did sodium, but acid production was lower in the presence of the latter. The fermentative decrease in the suspension pH from 7.2 to 4.7 in the presence of potassium was slightly inhibited by a large addition of external sodium. Concomitantly the cellular sodium was increased threefold.

Abstract:Pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma, formally named pulmonary sclerosing hemangioma, is a rare benign tumor with malignant potential often identified as solid pulmonary nodules. Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory, multisystemic disease of unknown cause with a wide range of clinical manifestations. The disorder is characterized by the formation of noncaseating granulomas in virtually any organ in the body. We present a case of a patient presenting with fever, weight loss, and respiratory symptoms found to have both a sclerosing pneumocytoma and pulmonary sarcoidosis. A diagnosis was made following the lobectomy. The patient was followed for two years with stable lymphadenopathy while remaining asymptomatic.

Abstract:Background: Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma (PSC) is a rare highly aggressive and poorly differentiated non-small cell carcinoma, and little is known about the information on the usefulness of 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose ( 18 F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). We investigated the clinical and 18 F-FDG PET/CT features of PSC. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 25 consecutive PSC patients who had undergone 18 F-FDG PET/CT. Demographic data, PET/CT findings before treatment, pathological features, and prognosis in these patients were investigated to define correlates between maximal standard uptake value (SUVmax) and clinicopathological parameters. Results: From March 2017 to January 2023, twenty-five eligible patients with PSC were identified. There were 23 (92%) men, aged 68.5 ± 8.5 (range 56-90) years. Eighteen (72%) patients had a frequent smoking history. The mean size of PSCs was 59.3 ± 18.6 (range 29-97) mm, and 23 (92%) PSCs were Stage IV tumors. 20 (80%) lesions were located in the upper lung and 19 (76%) cases belonged to the peripheral type. Necrotic foci appeared in 21(84%) tumors. 11 (44%) PSCs invaded the pleura. All PSCs were FDG avid, and the mean of SUVmax was 11.8 ± 5.3 (range 4.8-25.5). Metastases were found on PET/CT in 24(96%) patients. The SUVmax of the lesions ≥ 5cm was higher than that of the lesions < 5cm (p=0.004), and the SUVmax of lesions with TTF-1 expression was higher than those of lesions without TTF-1 expression (p=0.009). All of the 25 primary lesions were considered malignant and confirmative, probable, and possible diagnosis of PSC was made in 2 (8%), 4 (16%), and 5(20%) patients, respectively on PET/CT. PSC was not considered in 14 (56%) patients, in PET/CT. The survival of patients with surgery didn't demonstrate a significantly good prognosis as compared with those without surgery (p=0.675). Conclusion: All PSCs had obvious FDG avidity. Although imaging diagnosis is still difficult, combined clinical and imaging features more than 40% of primary lesions were considered for the possibility of PSC in our group. Early histopathological diagnosis is necessary to help develop a reasonable regimen.

Abstract:Localized pulmonary amyloidosis forming a solitary mass known as "amyloidoma of the lung" is rare. Differentiation from lung cancer can be difficult due to suspicious features on CT and high 18 F-FDG uptake. We present a case of a 77-year-old woman with an incidental lung lesion on abdominal CT. Further evaluation with chest CT and 18 F-FDG PET/CT maintained the suspicion of lung cancer. However, histology revealed amyloidoma without signs of malignancy. Knowledge of imaging similarities between pulmonary amyloidomas and malignancies is important for interpreting 18 F-FDG PET/CT of lung tumors; however, only biopsy can confirm the rare differential diagnosis such as pulmonary amyloidoma.

Herein we present the clinicopathological features of a 25-year-old female patient with a 4 cm mass in the left upper lobe. She had undergone lobectomy with lymph node dissection with an incorrect intraoperative frozen section diagnosis of adenocarcinoma and diagnosed as a PSP with lymph node metastasis on permanent sections. The 3-year follow-up of the patient is uneventful.

Abstract:Background: Many benign pulmonary lesions, especially sarcoidosis, are metabolically active and are indistinguishable from lung cancer using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) imaging. This study sought to analyze the 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging features of benign pulmonary lesions and to improve the differential diagnosis of benign pulmonary lesions by 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging. Methods: One hundred and thirteen patients with benign pulmonary lesions were studied retrospectively. Each patient underwent an 18F-FDG PET/CT scan. All cases were identified by pathology, diagnostic therapy or follow-up. The maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) was calculated for each pulmonary lesion. Results: According to the final results, the benign pulmonary lesions were classified as inflammatory lesions (n=77) and granulomas (n=36) by histopathological diagnoses. The SUVmax of inflammatory lesions and granulomas were both high (4.55 +/- 2.77 and 6.81 +/- 3.96, respectively; P<0.05). When the benign pulmonary lesions were classified by clinical diagnoses, the SUVmax of sarcoidosis was significantly different from other diseases (15.12 +/- 5.67; P<0.01) Conclusions: Inflammatory lesions and granulomas show moderate or high FI)G uptake on 18F-FI)G PET/CT, but granulomas have higher values. 18F-FDG PET/CT appeared to have a higher SUVmax for the differential diagnosis of sarcoidosis and benign pulmonary lesions.
