Abstract:Viewing body-positive content on social media can benefit women's body image. Previous research has conceptualised body positivity broadly, and therefore it remains unclear whether some components are more useful than others. This study examined the impact of body appreciation or body functionality messages (in addition to a mixed condition) overlaid across different image types to influence women's body image. Young women (17-30 years, Mage= 21.53, N = 308) completed an online survey in which they were randomised to view either fitspiration or diverse images overlaid with messaging focusing on body appreciation, body functionality, or a combination. Participants completed pre- and post-test measures of appearance and functionality satisfaction, body appreciation, and body objectification / conceptualisation. Post-test measures of social comparison and perceptions of models were also taken. Results showed that message type did not interact with image type. Rather, exposure to diverse images increased appearance satisfaction and body appreciation, with no changes to functionality satisfaction (vs a decrease for the fitspiration condition). All conditions improved in self-objectification. Further, diverse images resulted in more favourable social comparisons. Our findings consider body positive content in a controlled way and show no differences across body appreciation or body functionality themes.

Abstract:Research increasingly explores body positive (BoPo) messaging and diverse model representation in advertising. Fashion and beauty brands are incorporating diverse models in traditional media to address criticisms of promoting narrow appearance ideals, yet their social media communications remain understudied. This content analytical study ( n = 460 models, 16 brands) analyzes BoPo messages and diverse model representation in fashion and beauty brands' Instagram posts. Variations according to the brands' reputation, posts' framing, and posts' popularity were considered. Results showed that although diverse models appeared to be prominently featured in the brands' Instagram posts (71.50 %; n = 329), the majority of these posts displayed only one aspect of diversity. Racial diversity was the most represented diversity trait (76.29 %, n = 251), while body (32.80 %, n = 151), facial (12.10 %, n = 38), and generational diversity (22.50 %, n = 73) were limited. The sexualization frame (88.70 %, n = 408) prevailed over the empowerment frame (32.40 %, n = 149). Positive changes were noted with the empowerment frame significantly relating to the representation of diverse models. Yet, this study also highlighted that such positive messages still co-occur with negative messages as an empowerment frame co-occurred with a highly prevalent sexualization frame.

Hemostasis is the process that maintains the integrity of a closed, high-pressure circulatory system after vascular damage. Vessel-wall injury and the extravasation of blood from the circulation rapidly initiate events in the vessel wall and in blood that seal the breach. Circulating platelets are recruited to the site of injury, where they become a major component of the developing thrombus; blood coagulation, initiated by tissue factor, culminates in the generation of thrombin and fibrin. These events occur concomitantly (Fig. 1A; also see Video, available with the full text of this article at www.nejm.org), and under normal conditions, regulatory mechanisms contain thrombus formation temporally and spatially. When pathologic processes overwhelm the regulatory mechanisms of hemostasis, excessive quantities of thrombin form, initiating thrombosis (Fig. 1B; and Video, Chap. 2). Thrombosis is a critical event in the arterial diseases associated with myocardial infarction and stroke, and venous thromboembolic disorders account for considerable morbidity and mortality. Moreover, venous thrombosis is the second leading cause of death in patients with cancer. Our understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of thrombus formation has advanced greatly through the use of novel techniques for studying mouse models of thrombosis. In this article, we review recent advances in knowledge about thrombus formation. We also offer new hypotheses and some speculations about thrombus formation and the prevention and treatment of thrombosis.
BoPo Online, BoPo Offline? Engagement with Body Positivity Posts, Positive Appearance Comments on Social Media, and Adolescents' Appearance-Related Prosocial Tendencies

Abstract:Encouraging prosocial tendencies toward others' physical appearance is crucial for promoting a positive body image during adolescence. Social media content that highlights positive appearance messages can significantly influence these tendencies. Hence, this three-wave panel study explored the impact of exposure to and the posting of Body Positivity (BoPo) posts and positive appearance comments on social media upon adolescents' offline prosocial behavioral tendencies towards others' appearances, as mediated by appearance-related prosocial reasoning. Using a sample of adolescents aged 12 to 18 ( N = 496, M age = 15.05, SD = 1.49; 67.9% girls), the hypotheses received partial support. At the between-person level, adolescents who more often viewed BoPo and posted positive appearance comments also reported higher appearance-related prosocial tendencies. Nonetheless, on the within-person level, only more often posting positive appearance comments predicted a change to more appearance-related prosocial reasoning from T2 to T3. Notably, the mediation pathways from exposure to and the posting of BoPo and positive appearance comments to appearance-related prosocial tendencies through prosocial reasoning were not significant. Such findings suggest the presence of more significant sources for appearance-related prosocial tendencies than social media during adolescence. Still, the between-person findings can be valuable for peer-led campaigns that aim to foster a positive body image. Such campaigns could identify adolescents with heightened appearance-related prosocial tendencies who tend to engage with body positivity posts and positive appearance comments on social media.

Abstract:In recent years, the body-positive movement has emerged on social media and has generated both support and criticism in pop-cultural discourse. We review the potential benefits and disadvantages of ‘body positivity’ on social media in light of theory and the available research. Based on the early evidence showing potential benefits of engaging with body-positive content on social media for positive body image, a case is made in support of this emerging content. Nevertheless, recommendations are made for future research with an emphasis on experimental and longitudinal investigations of actual health outcomes of engaging with body positivity on social media and clarification of the potential relationship between body positivity and objectification.

Ecological assessment of emotional enhancement of memory in progressive nonfluent aphasia and Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Events which are imbued with emotion are typically remembered vividly and with more confidence than similar non-emotional events. The extent that emotional enhancement of memory is compromised in neurodegenerative disorders is unclear, despite differential effects of dementia on emotion processing ability. OBJECTIVE To examine emotional enhancement of memory using an ecologically valid task in progressive nonfluent aphasia (PNFA), an expressive language subtype of frontotemporal dementia, in comparison to Alzheimer's disease (AD) and matched-controls. METHODS Twenty-five dementia patients (13 PNFA, 12 AD) and 10 controls viewed either an emotionally arousing or a closely matched non-emotional story. Multiple-choice recognition memory was tested after a 1-hour delay. The alternate story was presented two weeks later. RESULTS PNFA showed a similar level of memory for the emotional and neutral story, whereas both controls and AD remembered significantly more details from the emotional than the neutral story. Correlation analyses indicated that in PNFA, emotional story memory correlated with reduced emotion recognition, whereas in AD, neutral story memory correlated with visual recall memory performance only. Furthermore, in PNFA, reduced emotional memory enhancement was associated with increased carer stress and depression. CONCLUSION Emotional memory enhancement is absent in PNFA, whereas emotion facilitates memory for real-life events in AD. Disrupted emotional memory enhancement in PNFA is associated with reduced emotion recognition ability, suggesting that widespread emotion processing dysfunction is present in this disease. Crucially, loss of emotional enhancement influences carer wellbeing, which represents an important avenue for future studies to examine.

Abstract:Summary Rate of collagen synthesis, as measured by 1-C14-glycine uptake, by skin and in subcutaneously implanted polyvinyl sponge has been shown to vary with age and diet. A tryptophan-deficient diet significantly reduced the rate of skin collagen synthesis in young animals. However, the greater loss of more labile components of the skin resulted in a relative greater percentage of skin collagen in this group. Rate of synthesis in the sponge was not significantly affected. The deficient animals showed an increased specific activity in liver and serum proteins, suggesting that protein synthesis probably occurs at a faster rate in the liver simultaneously with increased catabolism or utilization.
Characterizing a body positive online forum: Resistance and pursuit of appearance-ideals

Abstract:The body positive movement emerged in response to pressure to pursue the unattainable thin ideal, and promotes a more accepting stance towards the body. To date, however, little is known regarding the nature of online body positive content. Using publicly available data from a large online discussion platform (Reddit), all the forums to which commenters on a body acceptance forum (N = 1262) had also contributed were identified. For each pairing of 50 representative forums (i.e., a large number and proportion of body acceptance commenters), the commenter-overlap between the two forums was used to compute a network model, to detect communities of body acceptance commenters. By manually reviewing the topics of each community's forums, the shared interests of these commenters were identified. The majority of commenters (86 %) contributed to forums relating to women, feminism, relationships and support, and mental health. Large proportions of the commenters also revealed an interest in topics including body weight/shape, eating, exercise, and cosmetics. These findings confirm that original feminist tenets of body positivity remain present. However, our findings also suggest the existence of a sizeable subgroup interacting with topics related to the thin ideal, perhaps illustrating a gradual absorption of the body positive movement into mainstream culture.

Abstract:Studies have highlighted the influence of social media comments on users’ perceptual consequences, but whether this holds true in the body image context is still largely unknown. This experimental study investigated the effects of social media comments on ideal body perception and how it influences one’s own body satisfaction. Results showed that comments guided the viewers’ perceptions of what is considered as “ideal” body. Viewers of favorable comments to body posting reported greater idealization of the body imagery (i.e. ideal-enhancing effects), whereas viewers of unfavorable comments showed a lower level of idealization (i.e. ideal-derogating effects). Also, the indirect effects of comments on body satisfaction via idealization were moderated by individual self-discrepancy between personal ideal and own body. This study sheds light on potentially inspiring or protective role of comments against perfect-looking bodies on social media while calling attention to the need for reconsidering the media effects theory for body image.

Abstract:Exposure to idealized social media imagery has been shown to be detrimental to body image among young women, and social media literacy may be protective. This mixed methods study aimed to evaluate the effects of an online video narrated by a high-profile, plus-size model on the body image and negative mood of young women and predictors of the effects. A sample of 304 young women, average age 20.95 ( SD = 2.09) years, completed an online survey including pre- and post-exposure measures of state body image and negative mood, and trait measures of upward social media appearance comparison, thin-ideal internalization, and selfie-investment. A subset ( n = 148) responded to open-ended questions to obtain feedback on the video coded categorically and through thematic analysis. Findings revealed immediate improvements in state body satisfaction and negative mood, with higher levels of trait appearance comparison and selfie investment associated with smaller effects of the video. Participants endorsed the video as raising awareness of unrealistic images but limited in terms of mitigating appearance comparison and selfie-investment. Furthermore, participants described that Iskra's status as a professional model also influenced their reactions. These findings highlight the importance of assessing for unintended paradoxical effects of social media literacy efforts and ensuring that such interventions are empirically based.

Abstract:Women who are pregnant or have recently given birth use social media where they may encounter content promoting appearance ideals or offering more realistic representations of the body during this unique period. To date, little is known regarding the ways in which different social media content may impact the body image and mood of women who are pregnant or postpartum. A sample of 261 participants aged 21-44, mean (SD) age = 31.79 (4.402), were randomly allocated online to view either thin-and-toned ideal or body positive social media content specific to the pregnancy and postpartum period, or a neutral travel condition. Findings revealed that exposure to the body positive images had positive effects on body image relative to the thin-and-toned ideal condition, as well as leading to increases in some indices of positive body image, while the thin-ideal images were harmful. Partial support emerged for the protective roles of body appreciation and low social media-related rumination among women exposed to the thin-and-toned ideal images. Social media content may be harmful or helpful to the body image and mood of pregnant and postpartum women, which is important given the documented relationships between maternal body image, mood, and maternal and infant outcomes.

Abstract:Extensive research efforts are being attracted towards resource allocation in LTE networks. However, from the resource allocation perspectives, linear services such as Digital TV programs have been scarcely studied. In fact, for end-users requesting linear services, the maximization of the the number of users served is much important goal than maximizing the overall capacity of the network. In this paper, linear services oriented resource allocation strategy is proposed. The goal of the proposed algorithm is to maximize the success rate of the users, depending on a minimum required quality of service (QoS), measured in terms of user capacity constraint. The proposed method was tested and compared to the optimal branch and Cut solution and has shown good robustness against network and user parameters.

Abstract:With the widespread use of social media platforms, the singular aesthetic orientation of society has had varying degrees of impact on women at both the physical and psychological levels. An increasing number of women are exposed to over-idealized images thus triggering a series of problems. The purpose of this study is to investigate how social media affects womens mental health and, in turn, how it affects their eating behaviors. By compiling previous research studies and evaluating information gathered from surveys and interviews with women in various age groups, this study carried out a thorough evaluation of the literature. The results of the study show that a relatively homogenous aesthetic orientation has led a growing number of women to develop negative experiences of their own bodies, which leads to varying degrees of anxiety, and dissatisfaction with their appearance. The proliferation of media big data has resulted in women being exposed to a high frequency of information that generates messages inducing anxiety and gradually internalizing the notion of an ideal figure, thereby promoting abnormal weight reduction practices. The research concludes with suggestions for the female group that self-awareness awakening and conscious resistance to narrow aesthetic standards in society are effective ways to solve their psychological problems.
Body as a Process versus Body as an Object: The Consequences of How Larger-Bodied Women Are Portrayed in Health-Related Advertising

Abstract:This research investigates how health-related brands can benefit from the inclusion of larger-bodied women in advertising. Given that larger-bodied women are more representative of the average American consumer than the thin-bodied women typically featured in advertisements, these results have important implications for marketers. Across eight studies, our results show that framing the body as a process rather than as an object in health-related product advertisements that include images of larger-bodied women increases women consumers' purchase intentions for the advertised product. This effect occurs because women consumers' perceptions of their own humanness increase after exposure to body as a process versus body as an object messaging. Furthermore, we identify a key boundary condition of this finding at the intersection of gender identity and sexual orientation. Specifically, we find that our results hold among women and gay men, but not among straight men. Our findings support calls for the inclusion of larger-bodied women in health-related advertising, provide practitioners with clear guidelines on how to portray larger-bodied women in health-related advertising, and underscore the importance of featuring diverse individuals who have historically been excluded from advertising in a way that does not negatively impact consumers' health and welfare or product purchases.

Abstract:This essay discusses the negative impact of social media on body image and the promotion of healthier attitudes towards food and body diversity. It explores the sociocultural and psychological factors that contribute to susceptibility to social media influence, such as self-esteem, body image dissatisfaction, the need for social approval, perfectionism, and social comparison orientation. Peer pressure and social comparison are identified as significant influences on social media platforms. Potential solutions and interventions are proposed, including media literacy education, promoting body positivity and diversity, encouraging responsible social media use, developing evidence-based resources, fostering a supportive online community, collaborating with influencers and content creators, and encouraging individuals to seek professional help. By addressing these issues, we can work towards mitigating the negative impact of social media on body image and promoting healthier attitudes towards food and body diversity.

Abstract:The enzyme levanase encoded by the sacC gene from Bacillus subtilis was overexpressed in Escherichia coli with the strong, inducible tac promoter. The enzyme was purified from crude E. coli cell lysates by salting out with ammonium sulfate and chromatography on DEAE-Sepharose CL-6B, S-Sepharose, and MonoQ-Sepharose. The purified protein had an apparent molecular mass of 75,000 Da in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, which is in agreement with that expected from the nucleotide sequence. Levanase was active on levan, inulin, and sucrose with Km values of 1.2 microM, 6.8 mM, and 65 mM, respectively. The pH optimum of the enzyme acting on inulin was 5.5, and the temperature optimum was 55 degrees C. Levanase was rapidly inactivated at 60 degrees C, but activity could be retained for longer times by adding fructose or glycerol. The enzyme activity was completely inactivated by Ag+ and Hg2+ ions, indicating that a sulfhydryl group is involved. A ratio of sucrase to inulinase activity of 1.2 was found for the purified enzyme with substrate concentrations of 50 mg/ml. The mechanism of enzyme action was investigated. No liberation of fructo-oligomers from inulin and levan could be observed by thin-layer chromatography and size exclusion chromatography-low-angle laser light scattering-interferometric differential refractive index techniques. This indicates that levanase is an exoenzyme acting by the single-chain mode.
Associations Between Weight Perception and Weight Status With Perceptions of the Body Positivity Movement

Abstract:Purpose: To explore the relationships between weight status, weight perceptions, and perceptions of the body positivity movement on social media. Design: Cross-sectional. Setting: Online through the Qualtrics platform. Subjects: Participants (N = 521; mean 26.6 ± 5.1 years) were recruited using Qualtrics online panels. Measures: The study survey included questions about participant demographics, weight status, and weight perception. Subjects rated 6 study-specific viewpoint questions about the body positivity movement on a 5pt Likert scale. Analysis: Multinomial logistic regression models adjusted for relevant confounders assessed the associations between objective weight status, perceived weight status, and perceptions of the body positivity movement. Results: Objective weight status was not associated with perceptions of the body positivity movement. Perceptions of weight status were associated with perceptions of the body positivity movement in young women, with those that perceived themselves as overweight more likely (OR = 1.67, P < 0.05) to disagree with the statement that "the body positivity makes people less likely to lose weight.". However, young women that perceived themselves as having a lower weight status were less likely (OR = 0.54, P < 0.05) to agree with the statement that "the body positivity movement empowered women" as well as "being inclusive of people of all sizes" (OR = 0.56, P < 0.05). Conclusion: Weight perception, rather than objective weight status, may be a stronger predictor of weight bias and views of the body positivity movement.
