Abstract:CONSPECTUS: To tackle the foreseen energy crisis and serious environmental problem caused by conventional energy resources, solar cells, or photovoltaics (PV), a technology that can directly convert sunlight to electricity has been considered to be one of the most important and cost-effective clean energy techniques that benefit the environment. So far, silicon-based PVs have dominated the market due to mature fabrication techniques and their relatively good power conversion efficiency (PCE) and excellent stability. In the past decades, metal halide perovskite PVs have been a major direction of current PV research owing to their intriguing optoelectronic performance. The record PCE of perovskite PV cells has unprecedently increased from an original 3.8 to 25.5%. The typical structure of a photovoltaic perovskite is ABX(3), where A refers to a monovalent cation such as methylammonium (MA(+)), cesium (Cs+), or formamidinium (FA(+)); B refers to a divalent cation such as Pb2+ or Sn2+; and X refers to a halide anion. In general, a perovskite PV device consists of an active layer of the perovskite absorber, which is connected by a hole-transporting layer (HTL) and an electron-transporting layer (ETL). In the beginning, the strategies to improve the PCEs mainly focused on developing an effective method to grow a smooth and continuous polycrystalline film. After the improvement of the baseline PCE of the perovskite PVs, various techniques were employed to reduce the defects of perovskite formed at grain boundaries and surfaces, further pushing the PCEs of perovskite PV devices to over 20%. In the meantime, the discovery of suitable and low-cost interfacial materials such as electron-transporting materials and hole-transporting materials has appealed to the attention of the perovskite research community to accelerate the commercialization of the perovskite PVs. In this Account, we start from our efforts to develop facile and effective fabrication strategies to obtain smooth and continuous polycrystalline perovskite thin films, including vapor-assisted and moisture-assisted perovskite crystal growth. The strategies and the in-depth mechanisms of preventing the formation of specific detrimental defects accumulated at grain boundaries or the surface are also portrayed by designing various passivation molecules with certain functional groups, such as carbonyl groups, amine groups, or sulfonic groups. Some systematically designed electron- or hole-transporting materials to improve the charge extraction and collection efficiency in perovskite PV devices are discussed as well. Finally, future perspectives for further enhancing the long-term stability and PCE are proposed to accelerate the commercialization of perovskite PV devices in the next decade.

Abstract:Intrinsically, detrimental defects accumulating at the surface and grain boundaries limit both the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells. Small molecules and bulkier polymers with functional groups are utilized to passivate these ionic defects but usually suffer from volatility and precipitation issues, respectively. Here, starting from the addition of small monomers in the PbI2 precursor, a polymerization-assisted grain growth strategy is introduced in the sequential deposition method. With a polymerization process triggered during the PbI2 film annealing, the bulkier polymers formed will be adhered to the grain boundaries, retaining the previously established interactions with PbI2. After perovskite formation, the polymers anchored on the boundaries can effectively passivate undercoordinated lead ions and reduce the defect density. As a result, a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.0% is obtained, together with a prolonged lifetime where 85.7% and 91.8% of the initial PCE remain after 504 h continuous illumination and 2208 h shelf storage, respectively.

Abstract:The mixed halide perovskites have emerged as outstanding light absorbers for efficient solar cells. Unfortunately, it reveals inhomogeneity in these polycrystalline films due to composition separation, which leads to local lattice mismatches and emergent residual strains consequently. Thus far, the understanding of these residual strains and their effects on photovoltaic device performance is absent. Herein we study the evolution of residual strain over the films by depth-dependent grazing incident X-ray diffraction measurements. We identify the gradient distribution of in-plane strain component perpendicular to the substrate. Moreover, we reveal its impacts on the carrier dynamics over corresponding solar cells, which is stemmed from the strain induced energy bands bending of the perovskite absorber as indicated by first-principles calculations. Eventually, we modulate the status of residual strains in a controllable manner, which leads to enhanced PCEs up to 20.7% (certified) in devices via rational strain engineering.

Abstract:The behaviors of free charge carriers and the crucial factor of carrier diffusion length in perovskite films are intricately connected, with both time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy (TRTS) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) being viable techniques for investigation. Yet, the consistency of the results these two methods provide regarding charge dynamics is still a matter of debate. In this study, we scrutinize the excited-state dynamics within MAPbI(3) films, which were fabricated through three distinct methods, under equivalent excitation conditions for both TRTS and TRPL analyses. Our research uncovers that films undergoing two-step annealing with Pb(SCN)(2) exhibit extended charge carrier lifetimes and lower rates of both first-order and second-order recombinations benefiting from the improved grain sizes. Across all samples, we note that the decay rates measured by TRPL are consistently faster than those recorded by TRTS. This discrepancy highlights the critical need to separate the behaviors of charge carriers from those of emissive bound states, which is essential for precisely assessing the fundamental dynamics of free charges and the diffusion lengths of carriers in perovskite films.

Abstract:Organo-metal halide perovskites have recently obtained world-wide attention as promising solar cell materials. They have broad and strong light absorption along with excellent carrier transport properties which partially explain their record power conversion efficiencies above 22%. However, the basic understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms is still limited and there remain large discrepancies among reported transport characteristics of perovskite materials. Notably, the carrier mobility of perovskite samples either in thin films or within solar cells obtained using different techniques can vary by up to 7-8 orders of magnitude. This tutorial review aims to offer insights into the scope, advantages, limitations and latest developments of the techniques that have been applied for studying charge carrier dynamics in perovskites. We summarize a comprehensive set of measurements including (1) time-resolved laser spectroscopies (transient absorption, time-resolved photoluminescence, terahertz spectroscopy and microwave conductivity); (2) electrical transient techniques (charge extraction by linearly increasing voltage and time-of-flight); and (3) steady-state methods (field-effect transistor, Hall effect and space charge limited current). Firstly, the basics of the above measurements are described. We then comparatively summarize the charge carrier characteristics of perovskite-based neat films, bilayer films and solar cells. Finally, we compare the different approaches in evaluating the key parameters of transport dynamics and unravel the reasons for the large discrepancies among these methods. We anticipate that this tutorial review will serve as the entry point for understanding the experimental results from the above techniques and provide insights into charge carrier dynamics in perovskite materials and devices.
The Impact of a Dynamic Two-Step Solution Process on Film Formation of Cs0.15 (MA0.7 FA0.3 )0.85 PbI3 Perovskite and Solar Cell Performance

Abstract:This paper provides deep understanding of the formation mechanism of perovskite film fabricated by sequential solution-based methods. It compares two sequential spin-coating methods for Cs0.15 (MA0.7 FA0.3 )0.85 PbI3 perovskite. First is the "static process," with a stoppage between the two spin-coating steps (1st PbI2 -CsI-dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-dimethylformamide (DMF) and 2nd methylammonium iodide (MAI)-formamidinium iodide (FAI)-isopropyl alcohol). Second is the "dynamic process," where the 2nd precursor is dispensed while the substrate is still spinning from the 1st step. For the first time, such a dynamic process is used for Cs0.15 (MA0.7 FA0.3 )0.85 PbI3 perovskite. Characterizations reveal improved film formation with the dynamic process due to the "retainment" of DMSO-complex necessary for the intermediate phase which i) promotes intercalation between precursors and ii) slows down perovskite crystallization for full conversion. The comparison on as-deposited perovskite before annealing indicates a more ordered film using this dynamic process. This results in a thicker, more uniform film with higher degree of preferred crystal orientation and higher carrier lifetime after annealing. Therefore, dynamic-processed devices present better performance repeatability, achieving a higher average efficiency of 17.0% compared to static ones (15.0%). The new insights provided by this work are important for perovskite solar cells processed sequentially as the process has greater flexibility in resolving solvent incompatibility, allowing separate optimizations and allowing different deposition methods.

Abstract:The charge carrier dynamics in hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs), especially the carrier generation, transfer, interface recombination, and collection, are in the femtosecond to millisecond range and are directly related to the final performance. Here the recent advances of the ultrafast dynamics of photoinduced charge carriers in perovskite thin films and PSCs are reviewed with an aim to the fundamental understanding from a microscopic level. The recent emerged ultrafast spectroscopy technologies are first presented. Starting with the electronic band structure that produced intense optical transitions and light harvesting, the physical characteristics are discussed, and the significants of regulation on these electronic dynamics are emphasized. Moreover, the carrier dynamics in recently emerged lead-free perovskites is also discussed. Finally, further prospects toward clarification of the relationship between the band-edge energy structure and the charge carrier dynamic process of PSCs are proposed.
Determining ultrafast carrier dynamics of hybrid perovskites at various stages of nucleation and growth kinetics

Abstract:With hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites increasing its technological reach, from photovoltaics solar cells to light-emitting devices, to nanoscale transistors, it is critical to establish the role of microstructures in dictating how carrier dynamics dictate device efficiency. Here we report on the ultrafast dynamics of charge carriers in hybrid perovskites at various stages of nucleation and growth kinetics. A solution-processed fabrication technique, with spin-coating conditions optimized to control the nucleation density of an intermediate phase, converts to hybrid perovskites upon a temperature gradient annealing. This strategy decouples the nucleation and growth steps that lead eventually to large-grain thin films, allowing us to probe electronic and carrier dynamic differences. We find, surprisingly, that the nucleating microcrystals already display the electronic properties of hybrid perovskites and share similar femtosecond-to-nanosecond dynamics as large-grain hybrid perovskite thin films.

Role of Ionic Charge Accumulation in Perovskite Solar Cell: Carrier Transfer in Bulk and Extraction at Interface

Abstract:By combining a simplified drift-diffusion model with the density functional theory, we quantitatively explore the contributing effects of the mobile defects in perovskites on the hysteresis of perovskite solar cells from aspects of both carrier transfer in the perovskite and extraction at the interface. Based on the solution of the one-dimensional Poisson equation, we demonstrate that at a positive biasing voltage applied to the hole contact layer that is larger than the presetting voltage, the carriers in perovskite need to overcome an energy barrier to transfer toward their selective contacts. The d ependence of the energy barrier on the scanning voltage is determined by properties of both perovskite and contacts. By using the first-principles calculations, we further find that the perovskite/TiO2 band offsets are larger at a higher positive presetting voltage. The results reveal that the contributions of the defect migration to the hysteresis depend not only on the structural properties of perovskite but also on the choice of the contact materials via both carrier transfer in the bulk perovskite and carrier extraction at the interface between the perovskite and the contact materials.

Abstract:<p>The device preconditioning dependent hysteresis and the consequential performance degradation hinder the actual performance and stability of the perovskite solar cells. Ion migration and charge trapping in the perovskite with large contribution from grain boundaries are the most common interpretations for the hysteresis. Yet, the high performing devices often include intermediate hole and electron transporting layers, which can further complicate the dynamical process in the device. Here, by using Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy and Confocal Photoluminescence Microscopy, we elucidate the impact of charge-transporting layers and excess MAI on the spatial and temporal variations of the photovoltage on the MAPbI<sub>3</sub>-based solar cells. By studying the devices layer by layer, we found that the light-induced ion migration occurs predominantly in the presence of an imbalanced charge extraction in the solar cells, and the charge transporting layers play crucial role in suppressing it. Careful selection and processing of the electron and hole-transporting materials are thus essential for making perovskite solar cells free from the ion migration effect.</p>

Contrasting Charge‐Carrier Dynamics across Key Metal‐Halide Perovskite Compositions through In Situ Simultaneous Probes

Abstract:Charge‐carrier dynamics are unraveled for three key metal‐halide perovskites, revealing dominant recombination pathways across a wide range of temperatures through combined microwave and photoluminescence probes. While FA0.83Cs0.17PbBr0.6I2.4 shows mostly intrinsic behavior, for MAPbI3, dynamics are strongly affected by inhomogeneity and energetic disorder at low temperatures. Fully inorganic CsPbBr3 exhibits significant trapping of a single charge‐carrier type at all temperatures. Metal‐halide perovskites have proven to be a versatile group of semiconductors for optoelectronic applications, with ease of bandgap tuning and stability improvements enabled by halide and cation mixing. However, such compositional variations can be accompanied by significant changes in their charge‐carrier transport and recombination regimes that are still not fully understood. Here, a novel combinatorial technique is presented to disentangle such dynamic processes over a wide range of temperatures, based on transient free‐space, high‐frequency microwave conductivity and photoluminescence measurements conducted simultaneously in situ. Such measurements are used to reveal and contrast the dominant charge‐carrier recombination pathways for a range of key compositions: prototypical methylammonium lead iodide perovskite (MAPbI3), the stable mixed formamidinium‐caesium lead‐halide perovskite FA0.83Cs0.17PbBr0.6I2.4 targeted for photovoltaic tandems with silicon, and fully inorganic wide‐bandgap CsPbBr3 aimed toward light sources and X‐ray detector applications. The changes in charge‐carrier dynamics in FA0.83Cs0.17PbBr0.6I2.4 across temperatures are shown to be dominated by radiative processes, while those in MAPbI3 are governed by energetic disorder at low temperatures, low‐bandgap minority‐phase inclusions around the phase transition, and non‐radiative processes at room temperature. In contrast, CsPbBr3 exhibits significant charge‐carrier trapping at low and high temperatures, highlighting the need for improvement of material processing techniques for wide‐bandgap perovskites.

Abstract:Benefiting from good solubility of metal halide perovskites, low-temperature solution processes (including one- and two-step spin-coating) have become the most common approach for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, one confusing issue is that what are specifically effective strategies for the one-step process may not be applicable for the two-step process, and vice versa. Herein, the PSCs with the same perovskite composition and device configuration were prepared by one- and two-step processes, respectively. The results indicated that high performance PSCs with comparable power conversion efficiency over 22% were achieved by both methods, while the detailed photovoltaic parameters varied greatly depending on the one- or two-step process. Compared to the one-step counterpart, the two-step processed PSCs exhibit lower open-circuit voltage and fill factor, but superior short-circuit current, which was in-depth interpreted in terms of the crystalline growth mode, optical properties, defect types, and carrier transport mechanisms related to a perovskite film surface (including a top and a bottom surface). Understanding the root cause for such differences would be central toward identifying what is really crucial for further producing high performance PSCs.

Abstract:Quasi-two-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites driving carrier self-separation have rapidly advanced the development of high-performance optoelectronic devices. However, insightful understanding of carrier dynamics in the perovskites is still inadequate. The distribution of multiple perovskite phases, crucial for carrier separation, is controversial. Here we report a systematic study on carrier dynamics of spin-coated (C6H5CH2CH2NH3)2(CH3NH3)n-1PbnI3n+1 (n = 3 and 5) perovskite thin films. Efficient electrons transfer from small-n to large-n perovskite phases, and holes transfer reversely with time scales from ∼0.3 to 30.0 ps. The multiple perovskite phases are arranged perpendicularly to substrate from small to large n and also coexist randomly in the same horizontal planes. Further, the carrier separation dynamics is tailored by engineering the crystalline structure of the perovskite film, which leads to controllable emission properties. These results have important significance for the design of optoelectronic devices from solar cells, light-emitting diodes, lasers, and so forth.

Abstract:Hybrid chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is an industrially relevant thin-film deposition method and has demonstrated great advantages in large-area uniform perovskite film preparation. However, perovskite solar cells prepared by hybrid CVD suffer from low power conversion efficiency compared to those deposited by the solution methods. Herein, the origin of the efficiency gaps between hybrid CVD and solution methods is systematically investigated. Optical and electrical characterizations indicated a severe nonradiative recombination loss on the hybrid CVD-prepared perovskite. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermal admittance spectroscopy measurements revealed the iodine-rich surface and higher density of deep-level defects (i.e., I Pb and V Pb) of hybrid CVD-prepared perovskite, which shorten the carrier lifetime via Shockley-Read-Hall recombination. These deep-level defects facilitate the migration of ions under bias, posing a concern for device operational stability. The fundamental understanding could pave the way for the advancement of hybrid CVD methods from a defect engineering perspective.

Abstract:Perovskite single crystal (PSC) possesses fewer bulk defects than the polycrystalline film counterpart, which has received extensive attention in a number of optoelectronic device applications. But the management of carrier behavior in an efficient solar cell based on PSC is not reported yet. Here, the carrier behavior within the device based on the ITO/NiOx/(FAPbI3)0.85(MAPbBr3)0.15/TiO2/Ag structure (FA = CH(NH2)2+, MA = CH3NH3+), in which the mixed PSC is successfully implemented into solar cells for the first time, is investigated. The PSC films with lateral dimension from 500 µm to 2 mm and thickness over tens of micrometers, are obtained through the polydimethylsiloxane‐assisted solvent evaporation method. The highest power conversion efficiency derived from the present device approaches 12.18%. It is revealed that the surface roughness and thickness of PSC, the operation temperature and thickness of transport layers, and the interfaces of transport layers/PSC largely impact the carrier extraction and device performance of the perovskite single‐crystal solar cell (PSCSC). This work indicates that the carrier behavior in the absorber layer and transport layer has large impact on the performance of PSCSCs, while the underlying design rule represents an important step to advance the PSCSCs and other optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:The inclusion of potassium in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been widely demonstrated to enhance the power conversion efficiency and eliminate the hysteresis effect. However, the effects of the locations K+ cations on the charge-carrier dynamics remain unknown with respect to achieving a more delicate passivation design for perovskite interfaces and bulk films. Herein, we employ the combined electrical and ultrafast dynamics analysis for the perovskite film to distinguish the effects of bulk doping and interfacial passivation of the potassium cation. Transient absorption spectroscopy indicates an enhancement of charge-carrier diffusion for K+-doped PSCs (from 808 to 605 ps), and charge-carrier transfer is significantly promoted by K+ interface passivation (from 12.34 to 1.23 ps) compared with that of the pristine sample. Abstract:In recent years, 2D Ruddlesden-Popper (2DRP) perovskite materials have been explored as emerging semiconductor materials in solar cells owing to their excellent stability and structural diversity. Although 2DRP perovskites have achieved photovoltaic efficiencies exceeding 19%, their widespread use is hindered by their inferior charge-carrier transport properties in the presence of diverse organic spacer cations, compared to that of traditional 3D perovskites. Hence, a systematic understanding of the carrier transport mechanism in 2D perovskites is critical for the development of high-performance 2D perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, the recent advances in the carrier behavior of 2DRP PSCs are summarized, and guidelines for successfully enhancing carrier transport are provided. First, the composition and crystal structure of 2DRP perovskite materials that affect carrier transport are discussed. Then, the features of 2DRP perovskite films (phase separation, grain orientation, crystallinity kinetics, etc.), which are closely related to carrier transport, are evaluated. Next, the principal direction of carrier transport guiding the selection of the transport layer is revealed. Finally, an outlook is proposed and strategies for enhancing carrier transport in high-performance PSCs are rationalized.

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed tremendous advances in organometal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due largely to the stellar set of optoelectronic properties of perovskites such as high absorption coefficient, long carrier diffusion length, and low electron-hole recombination. Notably, organolead halide PSC has reached a certified champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.5%. In this talk, first, I will discuss a meniscus-assisted solution printing (MASP) strategy to yield large-grained dense perovskite film with good crystallization and preferred orientation. The growth kinetics of perovskite crystals is scrutinized by in-situ optical microscopy tracking to understand the crystallization mechanism. The perovskite film produced by MASP exhibits excellent optoelectronic properties for high-efficiency PSCs. We also MASP cross-aligned conductive nanowires for biodegradable flexible PSCs. Second, I will present a simple yet robust acid-treatment strategy to judiciously create an amorphous TiO 2 buffer layer intimately situated on the anatase TiO 2 surface as electron transport layer (ETL) for efficient electron transport. The facile acid treatment is capable of weakening the bonding of zigzag octahedral chains in anatase TiO 2 , thereby shortening staggered octahedron chains to form an amorphous buffer layer on the anatase TiO 2 surface. Such amorphous TiO 2 -coated ETL possesses an increased electron density due to the presence of oxygen vacancies, leading to efficient electron transfer from perovskite to TiO 2 . Compared to pristine TiO 2 -based devices, the perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with acid-treated TiO 2 ETL exhibit enhanced short circuit current and PCE. Notably, we also tailor carrier dynamics in PSCs via precise dimension and architecture control and interfacial positioning of plasmonic nanoparticles in TiO 2 ETL. Third, I will demonstrate synergistic cascade carrier extraction via dual interfacial positioning of ambipolar black phosphorene (BP) for high-efficiency PSCs. Concurrently enhanced carrier extraction at both electron transport layer/perovskite and perovskite/hole transport layer interfaces is achieved through judicious design and position of BP with tailored thickness as dual-functional nanomaterials. Fourth, I will introduce a robust route that simultaneously allows defect passivation and reduced energy difference between perovskite and hole transport layer (HTL) via the judicious placement of polar chlorine-terminated silane molecules at the interface. An integrated experimental and density functional theory study demonstrates that the dipole layer formed by the silane molecules decreases the perovskite work function, imparting an Ohmic character to the perovskite/HTL contact. The corresponding PSCs manifest a nearly 20% increase in PCE over pristine devices and a markedly enhanced device stability. Finally, I will show the spatial poling-initiated perovskite self-healing for defects passivation. The spatial poling significantly enhances the ion migration recovery after removing electric field. Particularly, the ion recovery tends to form a perfect lattice structure, leading to decreased defects in the perovskite layer with enhanced stability.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite single crystals hold promise for photovoltaics with high efficiency and stability due to their superior optoelectronic properties and weak bulk ion migration. The past several years have witnessed rapid development of single‐crystal perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with efficiency rocketed from 6.5% to 24.3%, however, which still lags behind their polycrystalline counterparts. Moreover, the poor device stability under light illumination is contrary to the high ion migration barrier of perovskite single crystals. The key limiting factors should be the low crystalline quality and high surface defect density of solution‐grown thin single crystals. Under this circumstance, a review paper summarizing the recent progress and challenges will be instructive for future development of this emerging field. In this manuscript, the crystal engineering used to enhance carrier transport and suppress carrier recombination in vertical single‐crystal PSCs will be summarized initially, including crystal growth, component control, surface and interface modification. Subsequently, the application of perovskite single crystals in lateral single‐crystal PSCs will be discussed and compared with the conventionally vertical structure. Finally, the challenges and proposed strategies for the development of single‐crystal PSCs are provided.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSC) are promising potential competitors to established photovoltaic technologies due to their superior efficiency and low-cost solution processability. However, the limited understanding of the crystallization behaviour hinders the technological transition from lab-scale cells to modules. In this work, advanced Phase Field (PF) simulations of solution-based film formation are used for the first time to obtain mechanistic and morphological information that is experimentally challenging to access. The well-known transition from a film with many pinholes, for a low evaporation rate, to a smooth film, for high evaporation rates, is recovered in simulation and experiment. The simulation results provide us with an unprecedented understanding of the crystallization process. They show that supersaturation and crystallization confinement effects determine the final morphology. The ratio of evaporation to crystallization rates turns out to be the key parameter driving the final morphology. Increasing this ratio is a robust design rule for obtaining high-quality films, which we expect to be valid independently of the material type.
